Update 26 - Senpai
[X] Madoka could at least hurt it, or delay it. If she threw back kunai and kept running, they'd find an opening eventually.

Stopping would be bad. The monster looked big enough that it could break Madoka like a twig. She knew being an Armoured Rider meant being able to take more hits than she would without the armour, the fight with Baron proved that, but against something like that, Madoka didn't know if her armour would be effective. And Sayaka wasn't even wearing armour. The fight between Danza's Magical Girl and the advanced Inves from the Strawberry showed that Magical Girls weren't necessarily tougher than people usually were.

Madoka didn't want to look back at what was happening to all the trees in the forest behind her, but from the way she could hear them snapping, she got the idea well enough. The behemoth of an Inves chasing her and Sayaka down was charging through them like they weren't even there.

Madoka threw back another Kunai, and heard the beast roar again, too close for comfort. It still sounded like it had stopped in that instant, though, letting Madoka and Sayaka get some more distance.

...Sayaka.

Madoka's thoughts wandered for a moment, despite her best efforts. Sayaka had become a Magical Girl, sometime in the one day Madoka hadn't been watching her. She had come right for Madoka, so she had to have known that Madoka had been captured. Did Sagara tell her? Did Sagara know, already? Just-

Another roar behind Madoka distracted her from her thoughts, and she focused on the situation at hand. Questions later. Run now.

Sayaka suddenly took a left while holding Madoka's hand, and the Armoured Rider took a moment to adapt to the change. As she turned, she saw, out of the corner of her eye, the giant Inves running straight still, and from the sounds behind her, it didn't make the turn in time. It had lost some more ground, then.

"So how much free space do you need for that Lock Vehicle?" Sayaka asked, calling back.

"Not sure!" Madoka responded. "I'm not entirely sure what the trigger of it is. Not sure if it's distance, or time, or what!"

"That's great!" Sayaka replied, her voice somewhat easier to hear than it was a moment ago.

...Had the monster fallen behind further than Madoka thought?

Looking back, Madoka turned towards it, and saw the Inves grabbing a fallen tree, snapping it to be easier to hold, ready to throw.

"Look out!" Madoka called, pushing Sayaka to the ground as the Inves threw it's projectile. The tree sailed over their heads, and the Inves advanced while the two girls were on the ground.

Madoka summoned another kunai and threw it back, and even though her aim was off, the Inves stopped to avoid the explosion. That was enough time for Madoka and Sayaka to regain their footing, and they started running again before the Inves did.

The forest was big, Madoka realised. And so much of it looked the same. Even if she knew where she was going, she doubted that it would be easy to get there. And as it was, she was just running randomly, hoping she could find something.

Sayaka let go of Madoka's hand for a second, and spun around. Letting out a wordless cry, she hurled her sword back into the Inves, before turning around again while holding Madoka's hand.

"Hey!" Sayaka shouted, as she ran with Madoka. "I think I've got an idea."

"I'm listening!" Madoka replied, as she heard the Inves get closer.

"I saw some of the video of you racing Baron earlier." Sayaka shouted. "You could probably swerve around some trees without losing speed, right?"

"...Are you saying we go back?" Madoka asked. "But that-"

"I don't think we can run forever with that thing after is!" Sayaka shouted back. "Most of the people in the camp would have run to safety after what happened, and even if they didn't, they kidnapped you and the transfer student! I don't think we have to worry about what happens to them!"

Holding the Lock Vehicle Lockseed, Madoka steeled herself.

...She didn't have any better plans, and Madoka could hardly argue when Sayaka's life was on the line as well.

"Alright!" Madoka shouted, as she opened the Lock. Throwing it to her left, Madoka kept running as she watching it transform, then darted right.

Sayaka seeme to understand, and followed Madoka's lead, as they lured the Inves to the side. Then, Madoka turned, and threw a kunai at it's head.

Somehow, her aim was good enough to hit it, and the Inves reared back in pain. For a second, it's head was engulfed in an explosion, and in that second, Madoka and Sayaka darted past it.

The bike had been transformed when the two girls got to it, and as soon as they were on, they were off. The thunderous footsteps of the larger Inves were right on their trail, as Madoka shot forward.

"It's close!" Sayaka shouted, as they went. "Just go straight, I'm gonna try something!"

"At the trees?" Madoka asked, looking at the fallen tree trunks. Those were pretty big, and if she ran into them-

"Trust me!" Sayaka shouted.

Madoka discarded her doubtful thoughts and revved forward, shooting towards the fallen trees.

"Here we..." Sayaka muttered in anticipation. "Go!"

The weight behind Madoka shifted, and the bike shot into the air for a second.

"Hey, it worked!" Sayaka shouted.

Did she hit the ground or something, to knock the bike up? Or...

It didn't matter, Madoka thought, as she heard the ever-closer footsteps on the Inves closer and closer behind her. The indicator on the display screen at the front of the bike had appeared again, and the bar was filling rapidly, but it would still be here any second now-

The indicator suddenly shot to a completed state, and Madoka felt the bike start turning as she focused on going straight. The bike hit the ground, and Sayaka did whatever she had done earlier to knock it upwards again, keeping them airborne as they started phasing out of Helheim into-

Pain exploded into Madoka's back, and she heard Sayaka cry out at the same time as her, just before the transfer could be completed. Madoka held on to the bike as it spun, and as all vision faded away to the light of the transfer, she felt herself fall from the side, before hitting a wall.

Vision returned, and Madoka heard short, pained gasps as she looked around.

...She was in an alleyway, somewhere. They were out of the forest. The bike looked damaged, but folded back into the Lockseed. And-

"Sayaka!"

The Magical Girl was laying on the ground, blood thrown over the floor around her. She was crying out in pain, and her left arm was bent at an unnatural angle.

They'd been hit, Madoka put together. And Sayaka had taken the brunt of it.

"Sayaka, I'm sorry." Madoka found herself babbling, unable to stop herself from speaking. "I... Are you okay? Talk to me, what can I do, what should I-"

"Be calm, Kaname Madoka. Panic will not help her."

Madoka looked up at the comment, and saw the white cat-like figure of Kyubey sitting at the entrance of the alleyway, but looked down to Sayaka immediately afterwards. She flipped up the latch on the Strawberry Lockseed, dismissing her armour, as she looked down at her injured friend in horror.

"Can you help?" Madoka asked, pushing aside any concerns she might have had about Kyubey. Homura didn't like him or trust him but Sayaka was hurt and she was bleeding and was that her bone sticking out of her arm there oh god-

Kyubey strolled forward, stepping around Sayaka in a way that blocked Madoka's view of her arm, and rested a paw on Sayaka's back. Sayaka's pained moans quietened, then ceased.

"I'm cutting off the sensations being used to let you feel pain, Miki Sayaka." Kyubey explained. "Tomoe Mami will be here shortly, and she will help heal these wounds as best she can."

"What's wrong?" Madoka asked. "How bad is..."

"I do not think the answer will bring you any peace, Kaname Mdaoka." Kyubey interrupted. "Though if you would like to make a Wish to heal Miki Sayaka, that may make this easier."

"That..." Sayaka slurred, unfocused. "Won't be... Neccesary. m'fine."

"Most humans would clarify this as-"

"Shaddup." Sayaka grumbled. "Where's Tomoe..."

A shadow fell over Madoka, and she looked up to see a Magical Girl jump from the rooftop of the building by the alley, and slide down the wall to reach the ground.

"Miki?" The girl who Madoka recognised as the leader of Team Danza, Tomoe, gasped. "What..."

"Inves." Madoka answered. "In the forest. Big one. It hit us on the way out and-"

The yellow-haired girl nodded, then knelt down at Sayaka's side. "Alright. Let me have a look at this, I'll do what I can now, I have Grief Seeds at home that I can use to get you back to peak condition..."

"You were in Helheim." Kyubey noted, addressing Madoka. "The Lock Vehicles you received from the Lockseed Dealer?"

Madoka nodded, her mouth dry. "There was Armoured Riders in the forest, one of them had a sword and he just tapped Homura's Soul Gem and she fell and she's still in Yggdrasil, they have her, I have to-"

"I understand the situation." Kyubey interrupted. "An untrustworthy fellow explained it to Miki Sayaka, and I overheard. I would not have believed him, but she must have decided to make sure."

"I'm sorry, Sayaka." Madoka murmured again. "I... You got hurt saving me-"

"It's fine..." Sayaka sighed. "I'm... Alive, aren't I?"

"The situation regarding Akemi Homura is troubling." Kyubey noted. "But we can discuss that once Miki Sayaka has been healed. How is she, Mami?"

"She's..." Tomoe muttered to herself, looking over Sayaka. "...I think I got what I can here. I made sure to put her bones back in alignment, but her arm's still broken. I could fix all this at home, and she should be in a good enough situation to move."

"You're taking her to your home?" Madoka asked.

"She can hardly go home in a state like this." Tomoe replied. "And... Well, Yggdrasil owns the hospitals."

Madoka felt her hand clench as she heard the name, and it occurred to her again just how much this city owed to Yggdrasil. They funded medicine, construction, education, businesses, everything, basically.

"Kaname Madoka." Kyubey spoke into the girl's mind, as Tomoe tried to pick Sayaka up. "Do you mind if I ask a few questions? I can guide you to Mami's apartment, but Mami will need to travel over the buildings to move Miki Sayaka without being noticed, so you won't be able to follow them anyway."

"...What kind of questions?" Madoka asked.

"Yggdrasil currently has Akemi Homura, don't they?" Kyubey asked. "I understand that Miss Akemi does not trust me, but under the current circumstances, I believe Zangetsu and Duke are of more concern."

Duke?

...Oh, that would be the other Armoured Rider, wouldn't it?

"This is not the first time Yggdrasil has gotten their hands on a Magical Girl." Kyubey continued. "I am unsure of the status of the later few. I know for fact that the first of them are dead, and the scientists in Yggdrasil were able to determine enough about the workings of magic to create technology such as the Lockseed that the Lockseed Dealer uses to prevent me from investigating, some kind of telepathic weapon that damages me specifically if I draw too close to it while active. This effect of Duke's sword, I suspect, is also a result of their investigation."

"I'll leave you two for now. " Tomoe noted. "...Kaname, be sure to check in briefly at least, okay? It's getting late, but it'll help you rest easier to see Miki healed some more."

"I said I'm fine..." Sayaka croaked. "You got the worst of it..."

She sighed. "Nevermind. I'll see you soon, Madoka. We can talk there."

Tomoe nodded at Madoka, and Madoka nodded back. Then, the girl with the yellow hair extended a hand, and ribbons shot out of her sleeves, creating a rope or grappling hook or something that pulled her to the rooftops again.

"As I understand the situation, DJ Sagara enabled your escape from Yggdrasil, and pointed Miss Miki in your direction." Kyubey noted. "Is this accurate, Miss Kaname?"

"...That's what happened, yes." Madoka replied.

"I see." Kyubey noted, swishing it's tail as it observed the Lock Vehicle Lockseed, before picking it up in it's mouth and hurrying towards Madoka. Kyubey offered the Lockseed back to Madoka, who took it, before Kyubey continued.

"If Duke is capable of defeating a Magical Girl by touching their Soul Gem, then their acquisition of Miss Akemi is especially troublesome." Kyubey mused. "I have a theory as to how it is possible, but if I am correct, then Yggdrasil must have analysed Soul Gems quiet closely. At an estimate, I'd say that at this point, they would be able to understand the base of a Soul Gem well enough to start looking into what makes a Magical Girl unique."

Unique? As in...

"...You mean the wish they made?" Madoka asked. "Or... The magic they control?"

"I am not sure." Kyubey mused. "But the former is less likely. Even I lack comprehension as to how the process of "Wishing" works, merely that it does. But given what Yggdrasil has been capable of thus far, I find it plausible that they could find a way to counter the effects of Miss Akemi's magic. Or replicate it."

Madoka paled, as the thought of Duke with the ability to use Homura's top time with his rapier crossed her mind.

"Up until this point, Yggdrasil has been something that I have warned Magical Girls away from." Kyubey explained. "Mami, specifically, I have had to warn away from confrontations multiple times. Continued non-action, at this point, may be handing Yggdrasil free reign to do as they please."

"I'm going to save Homura." Madoka declared, softly, but Kyubey had heard her regardless.

"I am willing to provide aid, if you wish for it." Kyubey responded. "Tomoe Mami is quiet displeased with the current state of things, and I can direct you to other Magical Girls who may be of assistance. And of course, if you should seek to become one yourself, that would be within my abilities."

Swishing it's tail some more, Kyubey looked towards the sky.

"...Perhaps we should have this conversation in Mami's apartment, however." Kyubey decided, after a moment. "Assuming you are comfortable having it now. If not, we can discuss at a future date. I am still willing to guide you to see Miss Miki, either way."

Watching Kyubey' tail swish around for a moment, Madoka didn't take too long to think of her answer.

[X] ...She'd need allies or power to work against Yggdrasil. If she had a chance to start gathering them now, then she may as well take them.
[X] She needed time. So much had happened, and she didn't want to push herself too far. Just check on Sayaka for now, and consider the offer later.

The sooner we get Homura free the better. If Ryoma gets time stop or time travel we're fucked beyond fucked.

The plot waits for no one. Keep up or be left in its dust.

Well I was wrong but I stand by what I said last vote.

Kyubey: Snarkmaster

Also possessing of a somewhat one-track mind, although I am personally curious if and how being a Magical Girl and a Rider at the same time would synergize (if at all)

"I understand the situation." Kyubey interrupted. "An untrustworthy fellow explained it to Miki Sayaka, and I overheard. I would not have believed him, but she must have decided to make sure."

Hah

That's....troubling. Also possibly means we'll find out what Magical Girl tricks + Rider science equals when combined together as Zangetsu and/or Duke kicks our ass with it.

Fuck feeling sorry for ourselves, we have a damsel in distress to rescue.

At this point I'm more interesting in watching the crashing and burning than helping make it happen.

Or averting it.

I for one believe we can crash with enough accuracy to hit the intended target.
Granted, there may be an orphanage underneath that target but that doesn't we're not going to try and hit it as hard as possible.

Kyubey is confused as to what the fuss is about, he wouldn't lie to a potential contractee.:V

Kyubey is totally untrustworthy. Just because the devil offers you something doesn't mean there isn't a catch. :V

Nah I'm sure that everyone who will ever give you power is perfectly trustworthy. Kyubey, Sagara, Ryouma, this kind old man offering pomegranates to people, I'm sure you can trust them all.

... The closest to trustworthy on that list is bloody Sagara, and I can only trust him to deliberately push me in the direction of even more suffering.

At least Sagara won't be a dick about ruining everything you hold dear. He even has your best interests in mind while he does it.

But Takatora trusts Ryouma and his judgement and perception are perfect in every way, if Ryouma was untrustworthy he'd notice like he notices everything.

You raise a good point. If Takatora trusts this man then so do I.

He just has the most trustworthy face, which is why people keep trusting him.
