[X] In her experience, Madoka knew what was needed in times like these: comfort food. Promise to take her to that fruit bar-looking place after school to lift her spirits, get her a parfait or something and ask about trustworthy Magical Girls when you got there.
...She couldn't think of anything.
Homura was too hurt and scared of what was coming to talk about it in enough detail for Madoka to plan around it, and until Madoka had an idea of what was coming, she could hardly do enough to prepare for it to make Homura feel safe enough to talk about it. It sucked, but that was just the way it was. She wasn't good enough to do enough, just yet.
But at the same time, she couldn't just let Homura keep breaking down like this. Even if she couldn't prepare for the future just yet, she could at least try to spend the present trying to cheer Homura up, make her feel more comfortable. Maybe it wouldn't help enough, but at least it'd be something, to make her feel better...
...If only Madoka had much of an idea, for how to do that.
Maybe she could try treating Homura to something fancy? Ice cream or another dessert would usually make someone feel better, though Madoka didn't know if that would work with whatever Homura was going through. Still, it couldn't hurt to try, right?
"Hey?" Madoka asked, trying to think of how to raise the suggestion so that it felt natural. "I... How about we do something after school, later? Grab a parfait and just relax?"
Homura didn't respond right away, and for a while, Madoka was worried that it hadn't worked.
"I-I mean, the fruit bar place we went to not long ago does parfaits, doesn't it?" Madoka asked. "Maybe we could go get some of those and talk while we eat. See if having something nice makes it easier to talk?"
Homura looked up at Madoka again, and just looked at the pink-haired girl was a while, before looking back at the ground.
"D-Do you think it w-will help?" She asked, her voice weak.
"We won't know until we try, will we?" Madoka asked, trying to keep her own voice stronger. If she could just make it
sound like she was confident in what she was saying, then Homura might worry a bit less about what Madoka was suggesting, and there'd be more of a chance it could work. The less Homura was worrying, the easier it would be for her to relax, and be less likely to break down while trying to explain the future.
Homura looked up to see Madoka for a moment, before giving a small, strained smile.
"...Okay." Homura replied. "If you say so."
...Madoka didn't like the sound of what Homura was saying. Madoka still didn't think it was a good idea for someone to be relying on her and going by her say-so above everything else. But for now, it was the best she was going to get from Homura. Maybe when Homura was willing to open up some more, Hitomi and Sayaka would be willing to trust her more and give Homura someone reliable to depend on.
"I'll let Hitomi know, then." Madoka decided. "Sayaka, too, so she knows where to find us after she's done visiting Kamijou. We'll meet up at Drupers, okay?"
Homura nodded.
~~~~~
There was a bit of a crowd in the fruit bar, as Madoka, Homura and Hitomi stepped in. Not too many people, but still more than there was when they had come here yesterday, to meet with Sid.
A couple of the people were those that Madoka didn't really recognise. There was a girl with dark hair excitedly staring at a parfait she had ordered, looking at it like it was a precious treasure. In one of the corners of the room, a girl in an elaborate white dress was reading a book while slowly eating some kind of fruit salad.
For the most part, though, the people in the building were a group that Madoka vaguely knew.
"Hey." Hitomi whispered, leaning over. "Isn't that Team Gaim?"
It certainly looked like it, from where Madoka was standing. The older teenagers were wearing the usual jackets that Team Gaim were known for, and she could vaguely see the white-haired leader, Sumii Yuuya, past the crowd. Most of Team Gaim was sitting around the bench, with one or two members opting for the side table instead, but Madoka could see the leader in the back.
...Talking to Lockseed Dealer Sid.
Ah, he was here, then. Madoka hadn't really thought of that.
"Hey, let's go and sit over here." Madoka declared, leading Homura away from where Sid was sitting. Drupers was a small place, but she could still find a seat out of sight from Sid, that might make Homura feel more comfortable.
...Looking over to the pink haired girl, Madoka noted that she didn't seem overly comfortable right now. In fact, as Homura looked over to a girl wearing the Team Gaim jacket, Madoka noted that Homura looked somewhat fearful.
...Maybe that girl ends up doing something in the future? Madoka should ask her about it, maybe, and see if-
"Bwah!"
The sudden surprised exclamation caused Madoka to spin around, just in time to see the dark haired girl with the parfait losing her balance. Had she stepped away from the counter holding her meal, and not seen Madoka and her friends until the last second?
Stumbling at the surprise of nearly walking into someone, the girl lost her grip on her parfait. She desperately groped her hand forward to catch it as it fell, but all she accomplished was nudging the cup, causing it to spill outwards.
The majority of the dish landed directly on Homura, covering her in whipped cream and strawberries. There was silence for a moment, as the cup holding it clattered to the floor.
Homura seemed to be too shocked to respond for a moment, or even notice what was going on away from her. Which was probably a good thing, considering that everyone else in the fruit bar was staring at her, right now.
Madoka looked around, away from the black-haired girl who seemed like she was trying to babble an apology, and noticed that pretty much the entirety of Team Gaim had turned to look at Homura when they heard the noise. Homura was still taking time to react, slowly picking a strawberry out of her hair, and as she held it in front of her, seemed to realise that her glasses had been covered, for the most part, in the different ingredients of the parfait.
She vaguely heard a snicker from somewhere in the crowd of blue jackets, and realising how Homura might react if she heard people laughing at her misfortune, Madoka looked over at Team Gaim, giving them a glare.
She couldn't see who exactly it was who had started snickering, but as she glanced over the crowd, Madoka's eyes locked with that of the leader, Sumii. The white-haired boy met Madoka's gaze for a minute, before raising his voice to address his team.
"Alright, Gaim." He called. "Get over her. Group decision, we've got some options for the new Lockseeds and we're all getting a vote."
The rest of the team turned away from Homura, looking over towards their leader instead, and Madoka sighed in relief.
"I-I..." Homura started to stutter, as the situation she was in properly dawned on her.
"Hey." Another voice cut in before Madoka could reassure her. Homura turned towards the source at the same time Madoka did, looking over towards the man behind the counter of the fruit bar.
"If you need to get cleaned up, there's an employee changing room just over there." He gestured behind him, pointing the door out. "Not really anything I can do about any stains on your clothes, but you can at least wash it out of your hair, if you need to."
Homura looked from the store owner to Madoka a few times, before darting off past the door.
Madoka stepped forward, moving to follow Homura in, to make sure she was alright, but the dark haired girl stepped up close to Madoka before she could get any further.
"I'm so sorry!" She exclaimed, waving her arms around her wildly. "I wasn't paying attention and I dropped all of my parfait on your friend and I didn't mean to cause any problems but I did and I'm super sorry!"
She reached into her pocket, pulling out a wallet in the process, and immediately threw a handful of money at Madoka.
"Here, I hope this makes up for it!" She continued, stepping around Madoka and running away. "I'm sorry! Sorry!"
She disappeared out the door, shouted back one more apology, and left.
"...Um." Hitomi began. "I... What just happened?"
Madoka blinked, leaning down, and collected the various notes of money that the dark-haired girl had thrown out.
...Hang on, this was...
"Hitomi..." Madoka noted, as she stood up again. "There's... These are all ten thousand yen notes."
And there was quiet a few of them, too. It was...
Well, it was a lot of money. Surely, whoever that girl was, she couldn't have meant to leave behind
this much money. She had been acting erratically when she realised what she had done, surely she just hadn't paid attention?
Hitomi's breath caught as she looked over the money herself, and looked over it.
"...Well, I don't think we can follow her now." Hitomi noted, looking back. "She was running fairly fast, and we didn't even catch her name..."
"But we can't just keep this, either..." Madoka noted, looking over it. "We... We should hold onto it. She should be back later when she realises what she's done, right?"
A voice to Madoka's left coughed.
"She won't be." The voice continued. "You may as well keep it."
Madoka looked towards the speaker, the girl in the white dress with a book in the corner.
"What do you mean?" Hitomi asked, looking at her.
The girl took a moment to look towards the store owner and Team Gaim, before putting her book down, her hand underneath it to keep her page.
"Perhaps you two should sit down." The girl noted. "We might be able to talk for a while."
"...Perhaps you should explain who you are?" Hitomi asked, defensively. "Because a stranger suggesting that we keep money that was likely given by mistake seems-"
The girl moved her hand out from under her book, and held it up where only Madoka and Hitomi could see what she was holding.
The silver Soul Gem in her hand shone bright, before she hid it from view again.
"Consider me a concerned party." She stated, as she gestured to the seat opposite her. "Now, sit. We only have a small window where I can talk without certain unwanted guests eavesdropping in."
...A Magical Girl? Here?
Why?
Hitomi stepped forward before Madoka did, reaching the seat and sitting opposite of the Magical Girl. Seeing her sit down, Madoka quickly followed.
"Good, good." The girl in white noted. "We should keep this brief, girls. I'm afraid I can't stay long."
"Why are you helping us?" Hitomi asked. "We've never met, and if you have a reason to single us out to help, I don't know it."
"Have you heard of Noblesse Oblige?" She asked. "Privilege entails responsibility. With what I know and what I've seen, I have a responsibility to act on this information, when I can."
Hitomi looked at the girl suspiciously, but didn't speak. Madoka, unsure of what to say, also stayed silent. Seeing the opening, the girl in white kept talking.
"Your friend, the time traveller." The girl in white noted. Madoka sat up slightly, and the girl waved her hand dismissively. "The rumour might not have spread far enough, but I heard it, and I have reason to believe it. Calm down. But listen to me."
"...S-Sorry." Madoka sat down again. Really, just because that part of the rumour about Homura seemed to have faded away by virtue of nobody believing it, doesn't mean Madoka should be surprised when people bring it up.
"I know that she's trying to do certain things." The girl in white continued. "And that she's currently being held back by her fear of making a mistake. She doesn't want to ruin this chance she has."
"I noticed." Hitomi noted, a dry tone to her voice. "Can you explain why you say us down?"
"I suppose we are running short of time now." The girl in white noted, closing her book. Her Soul Gem had vanished at some point, and she smiled as she looked down at Madoka. "For now, I can only pass on so much information, before a certain someone notices. But for now..."
[X] "...Would you mind giving this to your friend? I would do it myself, but she's more likely to keep it together if you give it to her."
[X] "...There's someone you should find. Perhaps they won't be an ally, but Akatsuki Touka shares a common enemy with you."
[X] "...Tell your friend that she can't bide her time. Her enemies will outpace her more if she continues like this. Ask her to give you the Driver."
