[X] Head back to where the three unfamiliars were
- [X] Destroy them, then run for it if your magic sense spots Kyoufu or anything like her approaching.

I think I want to investigate further before going straight to the good old ultraviolence (there will be time for that later, I'm sure).

[X] Split up for now
- [X] Have Maiko...
-- [X] Go home and start working on an anti-emotion-magic-stuff-thingie
- [X] Have Yui...
-- [X] Go meet up with Minami and Yumi. You can't do much else on this issue for tonight, might as well go meet the new kids

I felt letting her go would make it harder to pick her up again and the next time we meet would be in conflict with a trigger happy magical girl that could spoil Kyoufu's impression since I get the feeling she never met magical girls before.

I think I want to play things safe for now.

My take-away from all this is we really need one of these things so we can make Incubators self-destruct at will. Or a copy of their power, which is something we should be able to do.

Destroying their unfamiliars may have unknown consequences for their victims, though, and may trigger another, less friendly, encounter with a doll before Maiko has had the opportunity to put defenses up.

To be fair, you're already aware that unfamiliars have been destroyed before--by mundane means, no less--without any drastic consequences Maiko and Minami could discover. You're also aware that some, but not all, of the previous victims have returned to normal, and Maiko would agree that "destroying an unfamiliar returns the missing piece of the victim's soul" is a reasonable guess. It's not 100% certain though, and even if it is true there are issues Maiko would raise--the largest being that the known cases of unfamiliars being destroyed happened shortly after their creation, while the victim was nearby, and one or both of those factors could easily be necessary to undo the effect rather than, say, make it permanent.

"Unknown consequences," yes. Or at least uncertain.

Fair enough. Just saying, destroying them now is at least reasonable and at some point you'll have to get rid of them even if you're still not 100% certain of the results. Leaving them be for now is fine, though, especially since the ones you're aware of seem to be staying in one place not doing anything.

I suppose you could always try and follow Kyoufu and shout questions from a distance about what destroying the monsters does, since if anyone would know she would, but... uh, yeah. Probably not a good plan. :V

When has that ever stopped me from doing what's hilarious?

[X] Follow Kyoufu from a distance, try to communicate with her without getting fearblasted
-[X] Ask her about herself, about her unfamiliars, about what her plan is and what happens if they're destroyed. Maybe she'll monologue at us!

I don't think Yui would be very happy leaving the situation to further deteriorate. Thus, I vote to do something! Kyoufu seems friendly enough, anyways.

I gotta say, you guys are missing something that feels like it should be an obvious way to tackle this even if it only now occurred to me.

:V

(Also, as it stands three very different options are tied or nearly so. I probably won't be able to write until tomorrow, so hopefully there'll be a clear winner by then?)

@redzonejoe, improvements suggestions:
  • Try contacting Kyoufu via telepathy.
  • Ask Maiko whether she could project our voice to Kyoufu's location.
  • If the dialogue is established, have Maiko project Kyoufu's voice to us via her clairvoyance magic.
Do we want to telepathically connect to the fear monster? It might let us talk from a safe distance, or it might blast the fear aura directly into our brain.

Is it 'threatening to beat her up and/or hate her if she doesn't do what we say'? She does seem susceptible to fear-based diplomacy.

Tiebreaker!
It's close enough to what I want. Hopefully Echo has Yui ask tactfully. Or threaten diplomatically.

Ha, someone actually realized that Maiko must have something like that going on.

Unfortunately it requires an ally as an "anchor" and only lets her get very basic audio/visual input from a perspective in their immediate vicinity, among various other minor drawbacks. Won't really help here. She has a few other tricks she uses to similar effect, but other than literally amplifying actual sound none would help. I guess Kyoufu is kinda quiet so maybe that would be useful here? Yui can shout loud enough on her own, though. :V

Telepathy doesn't really involve a mental connection in any meaningful way, actually, it just skims surface thoughts for combinations of "intent to send" + "imaginary sensory input". It feels sorta like using an invisible cellphone or something, which is probably part of why sending anything other than "voice" is counter-intuitive for most people.

The details aren't something Yui knows IC, but the experience of using telepathy seems mentally detached enough for her to not expect emotions to be transmitted.

Kyubey's brain, Kyubey's problem.

...or Minami's. Especially since the last bunnycat you spoke to had trouble understanding that Kyoufu actually existed.

Nah, the telepathy thing. I was thinking about how the whole "running after Kyoufu to talk" thing might play out when it finally occurred to me that telepathy hasn't been ruled out as an option.
