It's the little things that get to you, over time.

"Oh, you're so talented," well-meaning adults gush. "You're just good at everything, aren't you?" Sure. Of course you are.

Always good, never good enough.

You see, talented is something you are, not something you do. Sometimes you almost think you'd rather be a total failure--at least then you'd know your place. Instead, it seems like you're always, always, always left out, left behind. If all the souls in the world queued up to enter a door called "Success", you were at the head of the line when the door slammed shut. A front-row seat to watch the things you'll never have. Never be allowed to even try for.

You'd let your frustrations slip, once. You were told that lots of girls would love to be as pretty and talented as you and that you were just being ungrateful and petty. You probably were.

And so, you try your best.

But the little things still get to you.

You're helping your mother make dinner, chopping vegetables dutifully. Your mother flits through the kitchen as if it were a choreographed dance, keeping everything running smoothly and doing what's surely the work of two people, at least.

She appears over your shoulder. "Oh, Yui," she says. "Can you cut those a little thinner? Here, let me show you." She takes the knife from your hands and demonstrates.

You try. The cut angles wrong, and the slice is thicker on one end.

"Ah, no," your mother says, "You need to--actually, don't even worry about it, dear," she says. "I'll take care of it." She's finished flawlessly in half the time you'd spent to do a quarter of it the wrong way.

You want to cry.

"Yui? Is something wrong?" Your mother looks at you in concern.

"N-no," you lie. "I'm fine."

"Well... why don't you go play until dinner?" she says. "I know how much you've been looking forward to seeing your brother again, and I don't want you to tire yourself out before he arrives! I do love having your help, dear, but I can handle it on my own."

"I know," you say. "I know you can, mother. Thank you."

Dinner is an elaborate and somewhat formal affair, as it usually is on the rare occasions that the whole family is present. Your mother has outdone herself, and your father has made time to be at home for once. The conversation centers on your brother, and how proud they are of him and his accomplishments, the latest award he's won, how he's the youngest person in Japan to do such-and-such, and you know the president of the company father works for has a daughter the right age, and--

Your brother just nods along blandly, shooting worried glances at you.

Afternoon - Sunday, January 9th, 2011

It's a cold winter day and the mall is crowded and bustling.

"You know," he says, and gestures grandly, "Mother is still wondering why you haven't found a boyfriend. She seems almost offended, like any daughter of hers should have suitors lining up around the block!"

You laugh, leaning back in your chair. "I wish! Though I imagine she wouldn't be thrilled by--ooh, look! Over there, by the electronics store."

Your brother groans. "We're not doing this, Yui."

"C'mon! See? The cute one in the blue hoodie, with the pixie cut hair and glasses."

He glances over involuntarily, then buries his face in his hands when he realizes what he did. "Yui!"

You giggle madly. "Well...?"

"Yes," he mumbles.

"I knew it! Excellent taste, brother dearest. Excellent taste, indeed."

"We need to find you a girlfriend," he mutters. "So you'll have better things to do than meddle with my lack of a love life."

"You mean I'd--"

"Yui, no."

"I'd ha--"

"Yui!"

You pout. Fine, no inappropriate jokes in public. Your brother can be so uptight sometimes.

You both sit silently, munching on the snacks you bought.

"You doing okay?" he finally asks a few minutes later.

"Yeah," you reply. "I guess."

"Wanna talk about it?"

You shrug. "I'm just... tired of feeling irrelevant, of always falling short, of never getting a chance," you say. "I mean, I don't even care about... glory, or whatever. Y'know, like all the attention you get." You wink at him and he grumbles. "I... want to be part of something bigger, I guess. Something meaningful," you continue, waving your hands around for emphasis. "I've got all the opportunities and advantages in the world, really, but never the chance to use them." You sigh. "It's like nobody sees me as a person who can do things, just that pretty and oh-so-talented girl with the genius for a brother. Like a doll to be admired. So I... sit here. Just a big pile of wasted potential."

"Yui..." he says, and you feel a pang of regret at the look on his face.

You wave your hand dismissively. "But seriously, don't worry about it! You've got your own problems," you say. If there's one thing you refuse to be, it's an emotional burden to others, so... time to change the subject! You grin impishly at him--and he's already starting to groan because he knows what you're about to say--"Such as your love life," you continue. Ah, sibling bonding at its finest.

"Can't very well have problems with something that doesn't exist," he says, trying very hard to look as grumpy as possible.

"Seriously, bro. When was the last time you even tried to get a girl?"

"Well... there was this one girl in high school," he says. "Tall, kinda scrawny, thick glasses. Usually top of the class."

"Perfect! How'd it go?"

"I. Um, well," he mumbles. "I never actually talked to her. Kept thinking that, uh... if I could beat her test scores she might notice me."

You bust out laughing until you nearly fall out of your chair.

"It's not that funny!" he protests.

At this point you've both finished eating, and you stand up. "Anyway, let's go!" you announce. "I wanna look for a new swimsuit and if you're standing around being grumpy it keeps the creeps away."

"It would be my pleasure," he says drily, as you grab his arm and drag him away.

Late Evening - Monday, January 10th, 2011

Your brother's visit only lasts a couple days, and then he and his Midas touch are back off to his fancy university. You almost feel you should resent him, but... he's the only one who treats you as an equal, who never dismisses your accomplishments or your failings, never treats you as anything other than you. You miss him terribly.

Why won't anyone take you seriously when you try to help? Why is it so hard to make people realize you're not just a piece of scenery?

You flop back on your bed, staring up at the ceiling. Ugh!

Really, you just wish you could do something.

"That is a very ambiguous wish, Yui Aikawa," a light, childlike voice says. "I would recommend something more specific, for best results."

You startle into sitting position and look around. Standing in your window is a small white creature with strange ears. It hops onto your bed and sits in front of you. What in the world is--

"You desire to help others, do you not?" it asks. Its mouth doesn't move, as if it's speaking directly into your head. "A very dangerous situation has developed in this region, and if it is allowed to continue as things stand, many hundreds--if not thousands--of people will likely be injured or killed in the coming months."

"Wh-what?" you manage to say. "How-- I don't--"

"The protector of this city has fallen," the creature says. "And it will soon be overrun by creatures that feed on human despair, and become a battleground for people who seek only their own benefit." It stares at you intently. "Yui Aikawa, it is within your power to fight for your city and prevent this. Will you do it?"

[x] This is what you've always wanted, isn't it? Jump at the call, worry about the consequences later. Now is the time for action!
[x] Ask how it thinks you're going to help--unless it's some sort of henshin hero transformation trinket door-to-door salesman, this sounds way out of your league.
[x] Ask what it means about the protector of the town and monsters and all that. You want deets, yo.
[x] Okay, give in to temptation already. Grab those weird rings on its ear and tug to see if they're attached somehow! This is really bothering you, okay???
[x] Okay, no, you are obviously dreaming. Tell the white thing that this dream is too confusing and you're going to change the channel to something else. Preferably involving tropical beaches and cute girls.

Yes, yes, I know. Another PMMM quest. Sorry 'bout that. Hopefully there'll be enough differences to set this apart from other PMMM quests centered almost entirely on OCs. Two of which I actively follow at the moment. So... yeah.

I had a bunch of stuff I was going to put here about what to expect from the quest but I deleted almost everything because I realized half of it was obvious from the intro post and the other half was stuff I can bring up when it's actually relevant. Here's a summary of the immediately relevant bits:

You are receiving one (1) Magical Girl Protagonist whose basic character and personality is already set, somewhere in the neighborhood of "Madoka with actual confidence and self-esteem, a bit of Nanoha tossed in, plus some stuff that's inevitable with SV at the wheel anyhow", but details are up to the whims of voting. You'll get to choose her wish under some restrictions, you'll need allies to survive, and you'll have a very limited amount of time to prepare before everything starts blowing up in your face. (Better start working on those Social Links!)

Assuming you survive the immediate crisis and are reasonably effective recruiting allies, your group can potentially be absurdly powerful--not enough to "break the system" since this isn't PMAS, but possibly subvert the system enough to ruin Kyubey's day. And that's always fun, right?

The title is just gratuitous Latin. Well, gratuitous-ish. Depends on what choices you make, ironically.

Oh, and you are not in Mitakihara. You are in an equally fictional city named Nagamioka, which is an hour or two away from Mitakihara by train.

The time/day labels are there because there will probably be small timeskips once things settle a bit and I want to be consistent. If you're getting a Persona 3/4 vibe... that's not unintentional. (This isn't a crossover or anything, though. I'm just borrowing some gameplay-ish ideas.)

...man, I'm gonna screw this up somehow, I just know it.

Dramatis Personae
    • (NO PICTURE) That's you!

You are currently a first year student at Nagamioka Middle School and are working hard to build yourself an awesome magical girl harem team. Team. You definitely mean team, yes. Ahem.
      Age: 13
      Birthday: May 8th, 1997
      Blood Type: B
      Height: 154cm
      Measurements: It's a secret♥
      Overall Description: Adorable
      Status: Tragically single... OTL
Favor-- ...okay, fine. You'll stop embellishing your character profile, geez.
Hair: Dark reddish-purple, down to mid-back, usually held back by a hair band
      Eyes: Bright pink
Mood: Disappointed at not having a proper trivia-filled character profile like a real magical girl protagonist!!! Bah.
      Heart: 6
      Mind: 2
      Will: 3

Axiom rule: Desires to help people and keep them safe, both physically and emotionally. Positive effects apply when comforting someone, rescuing people, or planning/attempting to do those; negative effects apply when hurting others even if it's the only option, or when seriously considering someone getting hurt because of her.
      Inherent Abilities
Magic Perception: Yui can perceive magical power. She's not sure what all the details and differences mean, or whether she can see only certain kinds of magic, but she can recognize humans and barrier entrances. Large concentrations of power or anything at too much of a distance becomes an indistinct blur and all she can tell is roughly how much magic is present. Physical Boosts: Yui's wish gives her physical enhancements well above most magical girls. So far she's discovered that:
      • She can jump well over 30m straight up, and probably closer to 50m.
      • She can smash flying boulders with her face.
      Magic Abilities
Shockwave: A light omnidirectional pulse of magic. Not very damaging, but will knock loose objects and people away from Yui. Costs 2-10 corruption depending on power level. Can break open a barrier entrance allowing non-magical girls to cross freely, because Yui apparently finds it easier to metaphorically kick down a Witch's door rather than figure out how the doorknob works...

Magic Beam: A narrow blast of raw magic, persisting for a few seconds. Makes simple inanimate objects explode, but anything containing its own magic will be sliced cleanly, if not blocking the beam entirely. Costs 2-10 corruption depending on power level.

Beam Spam: Dozens of simultaneous Magic Beam attacks at various angles and rotating in different directions. Covers a cone spanning 25 degrees or so. Small, agile, and/or distant targets may be able to dodge, but almost anything else will take at least a glancing blow. Costs 30-80 corruption, depending on power level.

Beam Cannon: A Magic Beam with more beam and way more magic. Anything without heavy magic shielding will be nigh-instantly vaporized. Costs 200-1000 corruption, depending on beam width, at roughly 1mm per point of corruption. Higher power levels would be possible, but at that point the beam is wider than Yui is tall and it becomes too hard to control. At full power, will destroy most Witches in a single shot.
      Fancy Tricks and Interesting Possibilities
Power Grab: Yui seems to have some ability to take control of existing power in some abstract sense. The details and limits are unknown. So far she's successfully stolen a Witch's power to control Witch Kissed humans, an ability she intends to develop further even though using it feels really creepy.
    • (NO PICTURE) Your super cool magical girl sempai who is gonna teach you how to be even more awesome than you already are! She's really smart and has been super helpful with all kinds of stuff. Her magic lets her look up all kinds of information which is probably why she kinda sounds like a know-it-all sometimes. You might feel bad about bugging her with lots of questions but you're pretty sure she enjoys explaining things to anyone who'll listen.

You kinda worry about her a little bit though. It seems like she was in a really bad place before you met her and while she seems okay now you're suspicious she's got a lot of pain and loneliness she's hiding.
      Age: 20
      Height: 173cm
Hair: Dusty green, around shoulder length. Looks like it hasn't been trimmed recently at all, pulled back into a rough ponytail.
      Eyes: Hazel
      Heart: 3
      Mind: 6
      Will: 4

      Axiom rule: ???
      Magic Abilities
Information Retrieval: Can obtain information about various topics. What kind of information and the means by which she does so are currently unknown. Corruption cost depends on what information she's after.

Iron Grave: Summons a swarm of magic chains out of nowhere to wrap and bind the target, immobilizing them. (1 MP)

???: Summons a large number of miniature magic forcefields in geometric shapes. Can be moved around independently, linked together into a single large wall, or formed into simple constructs she can control remotely. (1 MP)

???: Creates a swarm of flying sickle blades up to 25 meters away, which fly toward Maiko and disappear just before reaching her, or sooner if she prefers. (1 MP)

???: Temporary magic effect that allows controlled flight and levitation. (1 MP when transformed; 2 MP otherwise, or if used on someone else)

???: Temporary magic effect that allows limited control of raw destructive magic, either formed into a melee weapon attached to her hand or fired as projectiles. Destruction magic appears as a mixture of black smoke and green lightning. (1 MP when transformed; 2 MP otherwise)
    • (NO PICTURE) A student at Nagamioka High School who used her wish to launch an idol career. You haven't actually met her yet, but Maiko has talked to her.
      Age: 16
      Height: ?
Hair: Pale pink, short and slightly curly
      Eyes: Vibrant blue-green
      Heart: ?
      Mind: ?
      Will: ?

      Axiom rule: ???
    • (NO PICTURE) A magical girl in south-east Nagamioka. Her territory borders yours to the northwest, Chiba prefecture to the east, and Tokyo's Adachi and Katsushika wards to the south. She was driven out of her home in Tokyo by a group there and planned to continue on to Yokohama or Kazamino, but decided to claim part of Nagamioka when the opportunity arrived.

She seems kinda prickly and stubborn and is reflexively distrustful of everything to the point of near paranoia. As frustrating as it was to talk to her, the worst part is that from what Maiko says about Tokyo she probably has good reasons for being the way she is...

Her costume looks like a stereotypical delinquent outfit with a decorative flower motif and she fights viciously with two spiked clubs. She also has some sort of magic that's probably related to plants because she could summon vines to trap a Witch... actually now that you think about it, those spikes on her clubs even looked like rose thorns. You wonder what else she can do...
      Age: 15-17?
      Height: ?
Hair: Vibrant red, long and straight in the back with bangs that either curl around her face or sweep off to the side
      Eyes: Maroon
      Heart: ?
      Mind: ?
      Will: ?

      Axiom rule: ???
    • (NO PICTURE) A magical girl in southern Nagamioka. Her territory borders yours to the north and Tokyo's Itabashi ward to the south. You're not sure what her deal is.

She doesn't seem to have any weapon, but fights with blasts of fire and is graceful and acrobatic in combat. She also has a... rather distracting outfit. Ahem.
      Age: 14-16?
      Height: ?
Hair: Pale brown, to the point of being nearly white. Long with heavy, springy curls.
      Eyes: Dark purple
      Heart: ?
      Mind: ?
      Will: ?

      Axiom rule: ???
    • (NO PICTURE) Your predecessor, who held the Nagamioka territory for nine years and mentored many younger girls, including Maiko.

She was assassinated the day before you became a magical girl.
      Age: 32 (1978 - 2011)
      Status: Deceased
      Height: 166cm
Hair: Brown, slightly wavy and falling to mid-back
      Eyes: Dark blue-green
    • (NO PICTURE) A founding member of Momoko Kisaragi's initial Nagamioka group, and a very talented healer.

Made her wish to save Hitomi Fukuda's life at age 15. Fell into despair at age 18 after exhausting her magic reconstructing Hitomi's body after a fight.
      Age: 18 (1987 - 2006*)
Status: Grief Seed in Maiko's possession
      Height: 164cm
Hair: Light blond, short and wavy
      Eyes: Pink
    • (NO PICTURE) Territory holder of east-central Nagamioka before Momoko's arrival, then a founding member of the unified Nagamioka group and its de facto second-in-command for several years.

Made her wish to be popular and successful at her new school at age 12. Fell into despair at age 19 after witnessing Miyako's fate.
      Age: 19 (1986 - 2006*)
Status: Grief Seed in Maiko's possession
      Height: 153cm
      Hair: Black, long and straight
      Eyes: Lavender
    • (NO PICTURE) Your best friend since childhood!

Natsuki is a total jock and really sweet and also kind of a crybaby. You worry about her sometimes, that she might be a little too emotionally dependent on you, but... she's your friend so it's not like you could abandon her when she needs support, right?

She's one of the best soccer players in the school and you love watching her games to see her in action. She gets a lot of attention from other girls in your class... you've caught a few jealous looks thrown your way which you think is totally unfair because you're just friends and also you're preeeetty sure Natsuki isn't into girls anyway on account of never once catching her checking out her teammates despite how awesome soccer shorts are.
      Age: 13
      Height: 165cm
Hair: Yellow, bangs pushed up and back in haphazard spikes, the rest tied into a short braid.
      Eyes: Chartreuse
      Heart: 5
      Mind: 3
      Will: 3
    • (NO PICTURE) Another classmate. You don't know her all that well, but she hangs out with Natsuki a lot so you talk to her regularly.

Asami is a proud and driven girl with a chronically ornery and uncooperative temperament. Somehow ended up as the student council VP despite being the terror of authority figures everywhere and is surprisingly successful and well-liked for it. She's planning to run for student council president next year and you think she might just win.

Honestly, she's the one person you might feel a bit jealous of. Without any of your advantages she's done more than you ever have, and did so running on little more than ambition and sheer audacity. But she's Natsuki's friend and seems nice, so you can't really dislike her.

Anyway, she's cool and you definitely wouldn't mind getting to know her better. Ahem.
      Age: 13
      Height: 162cm
Hair: Dark orange. Shorter parted bangs, the rest just past shoulder length with a tendency to curl outward at the ends.
      Eyes: Dark brown
      Heart: 2
      Mind: 5
      Will: 5
    •   A second-year girl who Natsuki has a grudge against because of something stupid Minami did two and a half years ago. She seems to regret it and you really wish Natsuki would give her a chance...

She's super into conspiracy theories about aliens and stuff. It all sounds pretty silly, but then so does your life as a magical girl, so who are you to criticize?
      Age: 14
      Height: 164cm
Hair: Dark blue and short, in a perpetual "just woke up" hair style.
      Eyes: Dark gray
      Heart: 3
      Mind: 4
      Will: 4
    • (NO PICTURE) Your big brother. He's in his first year at a fancy university in another city and visits occasionally, maybe once a month or so.

The two of you have been very close for years. Your parents are nice people, but they tend to be strict, a bit old-fashioned, and more than a bit emotionally distant, so for most of your childhood your brother was the one who'd be there for you when you needed something.

When your parents started making disapproving faces at your precocious not-quite-teenage antics Kaoru often ended up "stuck" watching you in order to be a "good influence", which usually meant him aiding and abetting you and your friends in all manner of not-parentally-sanctioned shenanigans.

Basically he's a real bro, in every sense.
      Age: 20
      Height: 175cm
Hair: Light purple-gray, worn in a haircut best described as "a month overdue for a new one"
      Eyes: Dark red
  • Kyubey /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
A strange and mysterious white creature with creepy soulless eyes who offers contracts to become a magical girl. Kinda sketchy.

    His body is disturbingly stretchy...

    Yumi Kaga
A magical girl from Tokyo on the run after stealing a stash of Grief Seeds from the group that killed most of her allies. She was hoping to hide somewhere in the prefecture outside the Tokyo metro area, but got caught in a fight with Koharu shortly after entering Nagamioka.

    Chiharu Motomiya
The magical girl who killed Momoko Kisaragi's older sister. She probably had a traumatic childhood or something but that's no excuse for being such a horrible person.

Basically she's dead and even you have to admit she kinda had it coming.

    Izumi Kaikyou
A girl with magic that controls water and gravity. She nearly died before being rescued by Maiko and Momoko.

You wonder what happened to her after that...

Ludum Machinae
that's "game mechanics" in very dubious Latin fyi

The first law of this quest: I AM THE LAW.

...by which I mean that gameplay mechanics exist to smooth things out and let you know what to expect. I will disregard them if necessary for the sake of common sense or a better narrative, but most of the rules will be loose enough in the first place that it probably won't be an issue. I may also ignore crunchy gameplay stuff entirely for scenes where I'm pretty sure the outcome would be the same regardless.

    • There are basically five types of decision that will come up in this quest:

Simple Fluff: The decisions you make will have minor long-term impact, mostly determining what happens in the next update, most of which will probably be silly.

Social Minefields: The decisions you make will have potentially large consequences for how you interact with the other characters involved in the future. What happens will be primarily a matter of whether you can figure out what the other characters want and are motivated by. Dice will be used rarely if at all, and only for things like "does the character have the courage and/or willpower to do what the vote says".

Combat: The decisions you make will, obviously, determine the outcome of the battle. Combat will generally be resolved narratively if a plan is provided that relies only on established abilities that have a guaranteed result. Combat that boils down to "hit bad girl with thing what makes ouchies" will probably be resolved with dice, as will attempts to use improvised techniques or ones that don't have a guaranteed outcome for other reasons.

Exploration and Training: The decisions you make will provide information or improve the character's abilities in various ways, but with no other immediate impact. Note that a character's skill at a task will improve if and only if the margin of success/failure was small--overwhelming failure or success won't teach the character anything about what works or not.

Long-term planning: When there are no immediate crises, you'll instead vote on high-level plans of what Yui and friends should do over a specified period of time. I'll explain this better once the Quest gets to the point where it becomes relevant.
    • After the introductory bits, this quest will not necessarily be a single unbroken narrative. Your day to day life will continue semi-automatically until something unusual happens or you intentionally make plans of some sort. You will then ASSUME DIRECT CONTROL for the duration of these scenarios, after which you can vote on what plans to make.

Well, technically that will be true from day 1, it's just that you'll be having a lot of unusual days in the near future such that I won't bother breaking things up until there are no immediate crises and/or you have unlocked more playable characters.

Anyway, think of it as something like playing Persona 3 or 4, social links and all. ...of course, in PMMM when your shadow archetype goes on a monstrous rampage you can't hug it into submission.
    • While Yui is "you", the Designated Magical Girl Protagonist Full Of Love And Kindness And Yuri, you will have the option to get inside the head of other characters once--to continue the Persona comparison--their Social Link with Yui is high enough.

There are four general levels of cooperation you can have with other magical girls. Improving your social relationship with a magical girl makes it possible to suggest increasing your level of cooperation. For girls local to Nagamioka that's all you need; for girls in other areas there may be other restrictions. In particular, any girls belonging to a territory-holding group can't have a higher cooperation level than their group's leader does. And of course, these are reciprocal relationships, so assume that you'll also treat them as described.
      1. Neutral: You coexist peacefully with each other and can negotiate temporary alliances. You can enter their territory safely as long as you don't hunt there. They may or may not be interested in hanging out socially, but they don't actively dislike you.
      2. Friendly: Will be open to cooperation in general without a special agreement. Won't mind if you take out witches in their territory if you're already there and will come to your aid in an emergency.
      3. Allies: You fight together often, share a single territory, and probably see each other socially on a regular basis.
      4. Teammates: You trust each other fully and work toward the same goals. Your mundane friends probably suspect you're dating.
From an OOC and gameplay standpoint, moving from allies to teammates means that the other girl trusts Yui enough that I won't feel any need to keep details about the other character hidden for gameplay reasons. As such, any meguca with a social link at "Teammate" level will be considered a playable character and you can vote at any point to play a particular scene from their perspective instead of Yui's, including scenes where Yui isn't even present.

An exception to the "limited by leader" rule may be made for specific characters if you're fully allied with another team and girls other than the leader are moved to "Teammate" status.
    • Handling corruption and grief seeds will, at least for now, work roughly the way it does in Memento Mori, with the caveat that maximum capacity in this quest will not necessarily be tied directly to meguca potential/witch difficulty. Certain characters may have certain abilities that complicate things further.

Mechanically, a "grief spiral" describes a feedback loop of sustained emotional agitation. This can still be fairly slow; it just means that the character is accumulating corruption over time at a steady rate. Aside from grief spirals and certain flavors of wish magic, baseline corruption accumulation is too small compared to other sources to bother tracking.
    • There are three core numeric stats, each of which encompass a wide range of personality traits and tendencies. Note that these are specifically personality stats, rather than a reflection of intrinsic ability--they describe the choices a character generally makes, not a hard limit on what they're capable of.

Heart is a measure of empathy, emotional resilience, and strength of emotional motivations. Having a high Heart stat means better understanding of what NPCs feel and how they'll react, recovering more quickly from emotional trauma, and makes it easier to build friendships.

Narratively, if your perspective character has a high Heart stat (e.g., Yui) you'll get a lot more--and more accurate--hints about what NPCs are thinking/feeling, how they might react, and what the consequences of social actions may be.

Mind is a measure of intuition, perceptiveness, general intelligence, and strength of abstract motivations. Having a high Mind stat means noticing more important details, drawing more accurate conclusions, and makes it easier to create and execute plans.

Narratively, if your perspective character has a high Mind stat (e.g., Maiko) you'll get more hints about the overall situation, more attention to minor details that may be important, and more tactically sophisticated suggested vote options.

Will is a measure of determination, willpower, courage, and self-confidence. Having a high Will stat means being more resistant to physical and mental fatigue, staying clear-headed at high corruption levels, and generally refusing to be broken by the meguca system. Veteran meguca all have an above-average Will stat, either because they started that way or because years of meguca life are a painfully effective way to grind that stat up.

Narratively, if your perspective character has a high Will stat (e.g., Asami) you'll be able to make difficult or unpleasant choices without needing die rolls and will have a significant advantage in battle-of-wills magic such as resisting mental effects.
    • Each (playable) character will have a specially designated personality trait, motivation, or idea which I will arbitrarily refer to as their "Axiom", on account of words spelled with an 'x' sounding cooler and needing some term I can use without ambiguity. The Axiom represents something fundamental about the character's mindset. Their nature, you might even say.

The gameplay consequences are as follows:
      • Attempting actions that go too heavily against a character's Axiom may require die rolls based on their willpower.
        • Rationalizing away the conflict can also work, but will cause even greater backlash if confronted with holes in your "logic" later.
      • Even at very high corruption levels or when subject to mind-altering magic, actions that exemplify the Axiom will never require dice rolls to attempt--if the character's mental state is impaired enough for that, it's impaired enough that you won't be controlling the character at all.
      • Actions that strongly align with their Axiom will improve the character's mental state, e.g.:
        • Reducing or even nullifying corruption gains from sources other than magic use
        • A chance to break out of a grief spiral
      • Actions that strongly oppose their Axiom will harm the character's mental state, e.g.:
        • Increased corruption gains from sources other than magic use
        • Or even spontaneously added corruption for no other reason at all
        • May trigger a grief spiral even at lower corruption levels
      • If an internal conflict arises due to conflicting ways to satisfy their Axiom, the negative results take priority, though the severity may be reduced.
      • Major life events, fundamental decisions, or deep self-reflection can result in a character's Axiom shifting, to reflect their altered priorities.
      • Characters with strong internal conflicts may have multiple Axioms.
        • If they conflict, the negative effects again take priority. Because this is PMMM.
Finally, and most importantly: You will be informed in advance if any of the above applies to a provided option. If a winning write-in would risk triggering the negative effects described above, I will say so and give you additional time to reconsider the vote, if desired.

It is entirely possible to end up in situations where the only available options are compromising by acting against the character's Axiom or biting the bullet and letting something else bad happen instead. Getting boxed into situations like this is a quick way to end up dead and/or witched out--in other words, try not to sayaka yourself plzkthx.

      Heart: 4
      Mind: 2
      Will: 3

      Status: Active; location unknown

She hides her true face deep within the labyrinth, donning masks representing precious memories of friends she has played with. There is no death or sadness in her worlds of make-believe. To see the witch's true face, you must first teach her the courage to wear it.

Although the witch loves making new friends, she recognizes and remembers those few who visit her multiple times. They are her best friends and she treasures them above all else. When feeling lonely she will return to seek them out, and if she is unable to find the friend she seeks the witch will hide herself away and mourn for four weeks.

Peabody: Familiars of the Make-Believe Witch; their duty is to build fanciful worlds to entertain her. Although they are bumbling and foolish, they always try their best, hoping to be praised by the witch.

    • Maddalena

Anything new which enters her barrier will be collected and examined down to the smallest detail, its components carefully sorted and stored away. This witch's greatest desire is to be understood by others in turn, and so she will freely bare her inner workings to any who approach with the air of a scholar. If bested in a battle of wits, the witch will surrender willingly.

Giovanni: Familiars of the Unravelling Witch. Their duty is to keep records of every object the witch collects.

Alessandro: Familiars of the Unravelling Witch. Their duty is to power the machinery that forms the body of the witch.

Giuseppe: Familiars of the Unravelling Witch. Their duty is to travel far and wide in search of interesting things.

    • ? ? ? ? ?
Status: Legendary The Stage-Constructing Witch, spoken of in legend and possessing ancient and terrible power.

Lacking the Witch's true name, Maiko is unable to find it in her grimoire, but the fragments of information she has found are sufficient to convince her of the Witch's existence.

Despite extensive research, Maiko has been unable to find any pattern to its recorded appearances and thus cannot predict when it may appear again. Discovering the truth of this legendary Witch is a question that has vexed Maiko for years.

For some reason, Maiko refuses to refer to this Witch by its most common appellation...?

All locations here are either entirely fictional, or differ significantly from their real-life counterparts. Don't see much need to add descriptions of places that you could look up on Wikipedia...

A sprawling city encompassing most of the eastern tip of Saitama prefecture. One of the largest cities in Japan and the northernmost part of the Kanto major metro area. To the east are smaller cities in Chiba prefecture; to the south is Tokyo.

Nagamioka is an active, healthy city but hasn't seen much economic growth in recent years compared to the rest of the metro area, especially the rapidly growing, high-technology economic hub centered in Kanagawa Prefecture.
The school Kaoru Aikawa attends.

After rising to prominence in the 1980s, this school became the seed from which the on-going and world-famous Kanagawa technology renaissance grew, and it remains the nerve center of the technology hub that's grown through south-east Kanagawa Prefecture.

It's very shiny.

[Headed For Success]
Ignored a QM hint and a better vote in order to willfully turn Yui's first Witch into a Charlotte expy.

We want to be relevant. Time to get that wish then.

What if we just said no?

Technically, you can refuse. I won't outright railroad you into it. But it would go against what's already established for Yui's character, for one thing.

Beyond that, from an OOC, meta-knowledge standpoint: Yui is not even remotely in a high-pressure, contract bait situation like e.g. Mami or Homura was. Kyubey is attempting to recruit you anyway, which means he probably wants Yui, specifically, to become meguca. For unknown reasons. If you need a high-pressure situation to be convinced, he's very good at arranging them.

Also from an OOC standpoint, you are on a tight clock to git gud at meguca. I have a rough schedule of what will happen without your involvement, and I will say that delaying your contract will make the quest significantly harder.

[x] Ask how it thinks you're going to help--unless it's some sort of henshin hero transformation trinket door-to-door salesman, this sounds way out of your league.

So far it looks like the only consensus is to pull Kyubey's ears.

...which, to be fair, is what I'd sort of expected would happen, but it's not exactly going to move the plot along, either. If I make that a standalone update, you're getting basically the same options except that one to pick from afterwards.

I'm new to this quest thing so I'm not sure if I should do that, wait for more votes, or include the "jump first, think later" option which seems to be the runner-up.

Also if we do this, we need the cheapest-looking transformation trinket.

Eh, a soul gem is a soul gem. Until it's a grief seed, anyway.

Your meguca weapon, on the other hand, will probably look like a cheap cosplay accessory.

I think I might like this character. I'm sold. (Though to be fair when I saw the quest name I was kind of imagining taking over Japan).

Interesting that Kyubey should mention a defender. Has Mami just died, or is this some other city?

Ok, votes locked. Hatter and Hannz can be the winning plot vote so you get that plus ear-pulling.

If you want to unify the meguca world of Japan, be my guest. (Might want to be careful if you visit any temples in Kyoto, though.) That is, in fact, a direction I'd planned to give optional plot hooks for. Or you can ignore those plot hooks and probably not travel outside the Kanto plain.

Interesting that Kyubey should mention a defender. Has Mami just died, or is this some other city?

Skimmed the non-story bits of the OP, I take it? ;) This is another city, and Mami is still alive. The events of PMMM canon won't start for several months.

That said, same basic idea. Mami would probably be flattered by the comparison, actually.

*facepalm* My bad. When I'm on a tablet, I find I tend to skim more and reread less (because rereading while typing on a tablet is a pain)

Technically, you can refuse. I won't outright railroad you into it. But it would go against what's already established for Yui's character, for one thing.
Yui wants to be special; she wants to stand out. And when Yui finally stands out, she manages to stand out way too much. She'll paint an enormous target on herself. Instead of praising her, half of Japan will hate her and try to murder her. The tallest flower gets pulled.

Being famous and praised by everyone isn't always a good thing. Yui's brother is suffering underneath all of that unwanted attention and heavy pressure -- this is why he's unable to relate with his peers, especially women. He's known nothing but keeping everybody around him pleased so they keep heaping praise on him, which stunted his ability to relate with other humans. His idea for impressing a girl is getting better test scores, for Pete's sake! One day, Yui will realise that she's the lucky one, not him. She'll realize that just being talented is good enough, because you can still enjoy life as it is.

IMHO, Yui will probably approach megucaing from a much healthier mental perspective in a high-pressure, contract bait situation, rather than jumping in no questions asked. She won't be thinking about being 'special', she'll be thinking about staying alive or protecting the lives of people she cares about. That's a far healthier attitude for a magical girl to take than merely being 'special'.

Our brother is going to be our emotional crutch, isn't he? If we're going to make a wish, our wish should include some provision to keep him safe or provide a means of putting him underneath our surveillance.

Anyway, that's my two cents about the thread so far.

Your brother's visit only lasts a couple days, and then he and his Midas touch are back off to his fancy university. You almost feel you should resent him, but... he's the only one who treats you as an equal, who never dismisses your accomplishments or your failings, never treats you as anything other than you. You miss him terribly.
I can't tell whether this is a tsundere or yandere flag. Or both.

In fairness, there's a reason there's so many PMMM quests and it's not necessarily just popularity. The setting is a perfect environment for quest construction with it's easy access to high drama, inventive, narrative-driven fight sequences, easily organised episodic structure and vaguely defined wider world.

Also, I fucking love the brother. And something I don't recall ever seeing before in a PMMM quest, the potential for the MC's lesbianism to bite her in the ass familially :o

So with that in mind, watched :D

Prologue: Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself (2)
OOC: This... ended up waaaaaay longer than I intended. Whoops. I even ended up tossing in both "joke" votes. There wasn't really a sensible break in the flow of the conversation, so this takes you all the way to the obvious decision point. Good luck!

Late Evening - Monday, January 10th, 2011

You stare at the strange white creature, perplexed.

It stares back, patiently.

You squint at it.

It tilts its head at you.

You lean forward and squint harder.

It stands up and takes a step forward. "If you wish to help, all you need t--"

You reach out, grab the rings that are apparently floating around its... ear tentacles? ...and, very deliberately, yank. Hard.

Apparently they are attached. Somehow. As you pull further in opposite directions the ear-things stretch like taffy and... wow, the creature's whole head even stretched out slightly.

It blinks at you. "Have you satisfied your curiosity, Yui Aikawa?" it asks.

You let go.

The ear-things flop limp and its head remains stretched sideways, until the creature shakes itself like a wet dog and snaps back into shape, with a very faint boing sound.

...this totally is a dream, isn't it?

"I'm afraid it is all quite real," the creature says. Because apparently it can hear your thoughts and that's not creepy or anything at all.

Come to think of it, if you know you're dreaming, shouldn't you be able to... control it, or something? Hmm. Okay, this white thing is creepy, so time to change the channel! You concentrate really hard and sure enough... moments later... you haaaaaaave--!

--completely failed to change anything. No sign of tropical beaches or cute girls. Drat.

You pout.

You're also beginning to realize that this might not, in fact, be a dream at all.

"My name is Kyubey, by the way," the white thing offers helpfully. "And if you are now convinced of the reality of the situation, are you willing to fight for your town?"

You blink slowly, your brain gradually shifting gears into serious mode. Serious-ish. What passes for it in your brain, anyway.

Kyubey sits there, watching you curiously. "If you desire more time to consider it, I can return la--"

"No!" Your brain finally clicks into gear and you grab Kyubey, who stops talking. "Sign me up! I'll do it!" you say, attempting to both shout and whisper at the same time, succeeding at neither. Fortunately your parents' bedroom is on the other side of your (rather large) house.

It cocks its head at you curiously. "You realize I haven't yet explained the nature of the--"

"Don't. Care."

"Very well," it says, tail swishing in amusement.

You pause. "So, uh. What do I do?"

"Make a contract with me," Kyubey says brightly. "And become a magical girl!"

Oh, okay th--What.

"Okay." You shake your head. "How about we maybe back up after all? What? A magical girl? And what was that about the protector of the town, anyway? And monsters? Am I an anime character now or something? My hair isn't gonna turn pink or something, right? I mean, I like pink but that's..." You trail off, still holding the lock of dark reddish-purple hair that you were all but shoving in Kyubey's face a moment ago. ...this question business might work better if you gave the strange little creature a chance to respond, you decide.

"These monsters are known as Witches," Kyubey begins. "You could say they are born from curses, or from the darkness in the human heart. They lurk, invisible to normal humans, spreading destruction and despair and feeding off the negative emotions they create. Inexplicable murders and suicides, people vanishing without a trace, reckless behavior causing pain and injury--Witches cause all of these. Rarely, they have even caused what normal humans perceive as major natural disasters."

You listen, eyes wide. It sounds so fantastic and implausible, and yet--

--you remember your last year of elementary school. There was a boy in your class, he'd always been a bit quiet and you didn't know him well, but he loved nature and you remember the way his face lit up when he talked about something he'd discovered in some park he'd visited. His family was planning a vacation to some national forest or another and he'd been looking forward to it for months and--

And one day he'd just... walked out into traffic. Supposedly witnesses said he'd looked straight at the oncoming traffic before he did. There was no reason, no sense to it, and at the school assembly the principal had said how sometimes these things just happened, that it couldn't be helped, that there was nothing anyone could...--

You clench your fingers tightly in the fabric of your bedsheets.

Kyubey watches you patiently. "Are you are recalling such an incident?" it asks.

You nod silently.

"I see," Kyubey says, bowing its head. "You could say that magical girls also exist because of Witches. They are powerful warriors, and they alone are able to fight and defeat Witches; many magical girls regard it as a duty, or a calling." Kyubey looks intently at you. "And that is the contract I am offering you, Yui Aikawa: It is dangerous, and you will never again live as a normal girl. But you will have the power to fight Witches, to protect people, and to prevent incidents like the one you were recalling."

You--well, you already agreed, technically, but... after that, how could you possibly refuse?

"What about the... protector you mentioned?" you ask. "Another magical girl?"

"Yes," Kyubey says. "One of the greatest, according to many who knew her." Kyubey's tail droops sadly. "She fell in battle yesterday, killed by a Witch. She had many proteges over the years, but most have moved on to other towns, and when those who remained attempted to aid their mentor, they too were killed." Kyubey looks intently at you. "At this moment there are, to the best of my knowledge, no magical girls actively patroling Nagamioka, leaving any and all Witches here unchecked, free to run rampant."

Your blood chills at the implication of that. You think again about--drat, this would be so much more dramatic if you could remember that poor boy's name, but... it doesn't matter. You can't help him anyway, and the very thought makes your heart ache, but if there are who knows how many potential victims like him that you can save...

You look at Kyubey, steeling your resolve. You can help people. You can do something. And while you may be stepping in to take the place of someone much greater than you... well, you're used to being overshadowed, and if they earned their reputation then... you honestly don't mind. You'll do your best no matter what.

"What do I have to do?" you ask.

Kyubey perks up, tail swishing happily. "Ah, that is the other half of the contract!"

...other half?

"It would hardly be fair to ask so much for no reward," Kyubey continues. "So to form the contract, you will have the opportunity to make one wish."

"A wish?" you say, incredulously. "Like... for anything?"

"Yes and no," Kyubey says. "The wish is formed by your own heart, so it must be something you truly and deeply desire. The power of the wish comes from your own innate karmic potential, so while you may wish for anything you like, it will be granted only to the greatest extent your potential allows." Kyubey tilts its head. "Yui Aikawa, your potential is very high indeed. Not exceptionally so, as with those whose destiny will shape nations, but very likely the highest of any girl in all of Nagamioka. Almost any desire you may have can be fulfilled beyond anything you could dream of."

Your mind briefly flashes with thoughts of all the big, obvious things you could wish for--riches far beyond even your family's considerable wealth, fame and glory of all varieties, great accomplishments to your name, a harem of--ahem. But... what's the point of any of that, when you're about to step into the life of a warrior? Just moments ago you were all fired up, but it suddenly hits you that it's entirely possible you will--

"Kyubey," you say. "What if I... don't really want anything? If I just want to be someone with the power to help people? Can I... wish to be better at that?"

"Of course," Kyubey says. "In a way, the magical girl who protected this town for so many years made such a wish herself."

You look deep inside yourself and think. You're... creating a new life for yourself here, in many ways. What kind of life do you want it to be?

[x] Wish for great power. You're signing up to be a magical warrior of love and justice, what more could you ever want? Sure, from what Kyubey says it won't be as easy as it looks in anime, but that just means you need to be stronger... right? Then again, this is still the real world, and power isn't everything.

[x] Wish to protect those who rely on you. Defeating the bad guys is meaningless if innocent people get hurt anyway. Even if it means you might still be stuck in a passive role... so be it. You don't want to see anyone hurt if you can prevent it. Besides, this is flawless anime logic and therefore should work perfectly for a magical girl, right?

[x] Wish to have friends who will fight alongside you. If there's one thing you've learned from watching anime it's that the bonds of friendship are more powerful than anything else!

[x] Wish to understand the needs and feelings of others. There's... an idea that's stuck with you, from a show you watched once, that you shouldn't impose your will on people you "help" and that, really, heroism is often deeply selfish. You want to be a hero who helps and supports those in need on their terms, not your own. On the other hand, you'd be wishing for something to limit your power as a hero... is that really such a good idea?

[x] Wish to understand others, period. It's not that you're bad at reading people, because you're actually quite good at it. But you're never certain, and you hate that nagging fear that maybe you said the wrong thing, maybe you hurt someone, maybe someone is hurting and you didn't even notice... you don't know what kind of situations you'll face, but better understanding never hurts, right?

[x] Wish to bring comfort and happiness to those around you. You can't bear to see other people suffer, so if you can be strong for them and do something to ease their pain, well... that'd be all you really need. On the other hand, is it really your place to force happiness on people?

[x] Write-in

Okay, so here's the deal with wishing and how it will work in this quest.

Wording doesn't matter, except insofar as it expresses intent.

The intent behind the wish, what the girl really wants and is trying to express, determines the outcome of the wish, and unless the wish vastly overreaches the girl's potential or is based on a flawed understanding of the situation, the intent will be granted in letter and spirit.

The motivation behind the wish is what actually powers it, and thus what determines both the manner in which the wish is implemented and the nature of the wish magic. It is also what usually makes wishes "go wrong", especially selfless ones. Basically, if you want the right thing for the wrong reasons, or even merely short-sighted reasons, no amount of rationalizing will prevent the wish from taking the path of least resistance through your deepest urges and, perhaps, taking a form that reveals something ugly about yourself.

As such, be very clear about the intent and motivation if you create a write-in!

None of the suggested wishes will screw you over--e.g., Yui isn't so naive or simplistic in her motivations that that the "Bring comfort and happiness" wish would turn her into a walking Lotus Eater Mindfuck Machine, though that would be an entirely possible result if the wrong person made that wish--but think carefully about it, because some of those wishes will push closer to the edges of "this isn't what I wanted" than others.

Furthermore, I will be introducing a mechanic soon for handling corruption caused by negative emotions, and it will be based heavily on what the core of the magical girl's mindset is. For the purposes of this mechanic, Yui is driven primarily by deep empathy, giving her a desire to help others and a fear of being an emotional burden to others. Beware any wish that might go against that core, otherwise you risk being driven into a grief spiral by using your own wish magic.

As a final note, my general policy for far-reaching, open-ended powers is that they should be balanced by a limitation that stops a bit shy of crippling the power entirely. (Of course, in many cases that limitation is the personality and values of the person wielding the power...) As such, be wary of wishes that don't seem to have an obvious downside, because that means I may have to get creative. On the other hand, wishes that are inherently self-limiting or have only indirect effects will generally be safe and work as advertised, or even come with extra benefits.

So. What wish will make Yui's soul shine? Think carefully.

[x] Wish for great power. You're signing up to be a magical warrior of love and justice, what more could you ever want? Sure, from what Kyubey says it won't be as easy as it looks in anime, but that just means you need to be stronger... right? Then again, this is still the real world, and power isn't everything.

I might switch to 'understand others' if it gains more support than this.

Oh, and one last word of advice--as I said in the OP, you will need allies. Yui is not Sabrina, nor is she Mami, and no wish she can make will enable her to stand alone in a territory larger than Mitakihara and Kazamino combined.

On the other hand, she's pretty good at making friends on her own even without a wish.

Keep from getting innocent people hurt, and helps reduce the damage to any allies we acquire.

[X] Wish to right all the wrongs of society with your genius intellect. Use your awesome detective skills to catch the murderers, the criminals, the slimy politicians, and work your way up the tier of evil. Make them repent their evil ways! Gather evidence and reveal their corrupt ways! Capture those that pervert the natural order! Like perverts! Your brother will be so proud of you he'll worship you! Heck, the world will be so proud of you!

This write-in should help with her empathy struggles, while also allow her to stand out with her intellect -- she can be talented in her own way and step outside of her brother's shadow.

She doesn't need academics to shine. She can catch criminals and do good for society!

Okay, so lining up the potential options in a more concise format:

[] Wish for great power
[] Wish to protect those who rely on you
[] Wish to have friends who will fight alongside you
[] Wish to understand the needs and feelings of others
[] Wish to understand others, period
[] Wish to bring comfort and happiness to those around you
[] Write-in

On power: I can kind of see Yui wishing for this because she doesn't want to be ignored, and wants to be taken seriously. This also gives her agency to do something with her life. Maybe.

On protection: I think Yui would end up regretting this - first of all, she has to be relied on in the first place; secondly, it's easy to take the person who protects you for granted, or feel that they're not doing enough.

On friends: Yeah, gonna backfire. Yui would end up wondering if they would really have been her friends without her wish, even if her wish only put her in contact with people she could make friends with.

On understanding the needs and feelings of others: Maybe, but I don't think Yui's problem is a lack of insight. It may give her the power to do more about it, but it won't really feel like it.

On pure understanding: Same problem as the previous.

On happiness and comfort: This is also a possibility, but it runs the risk of creating a false or temporary happiness, so to speak. I don't think this is a good thing to wish for.

So, thinking about a write-in...

[X] Wish to be taken seriously. It's not that people don't know how to help each other. It's not that there aren't ways to make people happier. But too often, these ideas are brushed off, as foolish. As too expensive. As unimportant. Just like everyone brushes you off. If you're going to make people happier, if you're going to defend this city, you need them to understand that you're not just an ornament, and listen to what you say.

[x] Write In:
-Maybe it's selfish, but thinking of finally, finally becoming good enough makes your chest ache with longing. Besides, you tell yourself, wishing to be among the best at everything you do... That can only help when it comes to protecting the city, right?
