Preservation (Worm/Mistborn SI)

Citrine: If I'm ever fighting her in a situation where she both knows how my powers work and has had time to stack the deck, I'm doomed either way.
It only takes her thirty seconds or so to tune an area to screw over the parahuman within. Her other effects are fairly light, so if your power doesn't have anything to draw upon, it's not going to be able to screw you over. The fight just went from "game over" to "winnable".

Anyway, aluminum is extremely cheap in this day and age, so it can't hurt to keep some on hand just in case.

Except that I'm a normal person against a cape who always operates with cape support and who probably also has decent martial arts training. In this case, "winnable" turns into "maybe I can get away before her Brute partner squishes me".

...actually, that may be a situation where aluminum might be helpful, but since I didn't think of it until this conversation, the odds of me thinking of it in-story are pretty low. I already have the mindset that aluminum is Allomantically useless; it'd take one heck of a trauma in-story to get me to reevaluate that.

Dissolving pierced metals: ...I'm pretty sure that it only works on metals in my stomach. So that might work if my stomach is pierced by it, but frankly, I don't know that I'd think of that in time... or that removing the large metal object in my stomach without a way to mitigate the bleeding is wise.
I'm pretty sure you can dissolve metals that are piercing your body. Wasn't there a dude who stored health in gold that could burn gold as well and used it to really accelerate his healing?

Is your guy even a parahuman? Or is he an actual mistborn?

That might be a unique aspect of Twinborn, though, rather than a Mistborn trait.

Also, spoilers. The origin of my powers is plot-related.

The whole store something and then burn it to get a supercharged version is probably twinborn. Being able to burn metals that are piercing your body not so much.

So how stronger are you having your SI be mistborn wise? Is he as strong as Elend was or is he pretty much what most mistborn were by vin's time?

Even that's of questionable use, because a) Zane kept metals in his stomach for who knows how long without poisoning himself and b) whenever it gets up to problematic levels, I can call up Panacea.
Eh? It's been a while since I read the series, as much as I loved it, but I seem to remember differently. At the start of the chapter (when the guard he bribed to watch his tent sent the signal alerting him that there was an intruder), I thought I recall that Zane was dealing with stomach pains and thinking about he didn't care about the long-term effects of holding the metals, because he knew he wasn't going to last that long.

I could be wrong, though. It has been a while since I read that.

No, it was more like "I'd rather wind up with health complications down the road than be dead on any given night because I didn't have my metals immediately accessible." No stomach pains IIRC; just reflection that he was unusual because he'd rather deal with that than being assassinated.

You're correct--I went to double-check, because I really distinctly recalled the pain in his stomach being mentioned, but apparently I was mistaken. That scene had no mention of that sort of pain at all, though he did muse on the metals poisoning himself. (It also was the start of a scene break, not the start of a chapter.)

So, this looks awesome so far. I freaking love the Mistborn trilogy (got into it cause Steelheart was a recommendation by, hmm, Schlock Mercenary's author I believe, that was my gateway in Brandon Sanderson books. So many hours lost -.-)

Random question, I haven't read any of the Mistborn books past the trilogy, are they worth it? I admit I'm still a little cheesed with Vin dying, she was my favorite character by a huge amount.

Well, only one of them is out so far: The Alloy of Law. It's a different sort of read: same universe, of course, but with the time skip and the general tone, it reads a bit more like Mistborn: the Lone Ranger. I enjoyed it and I think it's worth a read, but it's not in the same league as the original trilogy. (That may be because Alloy of Law was an unexpected part of the storyline; it wasn't part of his original plans for Mistborn, but then he decided to write about it anyway.)

Question and speculation time.

1) Will copper shield you from emotional manipulation? Will bronze allow you to hear active cape powers? What about nicrosil and Chromium? Technically they should only detect/block/amp/damp Investiture.

2) Presumably you won't have Feruchemy (driving off Endbringers singlehandedly would kinda ruin any semblance of a plot), but are you capable of Hemalurgy? Maybe stealing connections to Shards?

3) Power-wise, you're pretty much a hard counter to all Tinkers (except biotinkers). And Kaiser would pretty much be your plaything. But the nature of Hookwolf's powers means that his metal should be immune to you - remember, his metal pierces his skin.

4) Do you have bendalloy?

5) Is Harmony responsible for your sudden arrival?

1) These will all be revealed over the course of the story.

2) Remember that the true art to Hemalurgy is knowing where to put the spike. The art was so complicated that even the Lord Ruler, with a thousand years and a head start, couldn't find out how to do any more with it than he had figured out when he held the power at the Well of Ascension. What are the odds of me being able to do anything with that?

3) Really? I thought his metal was his skin. Or rather, I thought he transmuted into a metal form.

4) See 1).

5) See 1).

On another note, I'm still working on this. I'm just kind of stuck on a particular part. I'm sure once I manage to get through that, I'll be able to finish the chapter very quickly.

I suggest you consult with someone else about that part.

Also yes hookwolfs metal is his skin. So you should be able to affect him.

Well, it's mostly that I get to test gold next chapter, and honestly, if writing my response to gold doesn't cause emotional anguish, I'm not doing it right. So it's taking me a bit to get to the point where I can have the fortitude to do it.

No, because the "cannot affect metal in another's body" thing should cover anything that's piercing or part of a person. That's how the Realmatics goes, if I remember correctly - the person's Spiritual presence overrides outside Investiture. Same reason that it'd be incredibly difficult to Push or Pull Shardplate - "magic" things are Invested with power that passively resists outside effects.

Hookwolfs metal body doesn't pierce his core. It surrounds and protects it.

i just finished reading the second book of this series for the first time today. someone quick lie to me and say vin lives. i hope this series lasts a while cuz i was just about to go see if there were any mistborn crossovers written.

Vin lives.

...as for how long she lives... well, no promises. :p

Also, if you find more good Mistborn crossovers, let me know, please.

Nope. It's just a bunch of blades he summons and can control.

Actually in Hookwolf's Interlude (11e), we get:

Interlude 11e said:
Hookwolf was one of the few to remain standing, though he bent over as shards of glass tore through the layer of skin that covered his metal body.

Interlude 11e said:
Hookwolf tapped into his core, the 'heart' from which his metal sprouted inside his body. He could feel it start to churn with activity, and the metal he already had encasing each of his muscles began to stir. Soon it was lancing in and out of his pores, criss-crossing, some blades or needlepoints sliding against others with the sounds of whetted knives. In a few seconds, he had covered his body, to protect himself from further attacks.

and

Interlude 11e said:
Orders given, Hookwolf drew the majority of his flesh into a condensed point in his 'core', felt himself come alive as more metal spilled forth. Only his eyes remained where they were, set in recessed sockets, behind a screen of shifting blades. He was half-blind until the movement of the blades hit a rhythm, moving fast enough that they zipped over the surface of his eye at speeds faster than an eyeblink.

It looks like Hookwolf carries metal inside his body all the time, and he can control it and make it grow.
