Pokken Tournament: Pokemon, Tekken Style

Yeah, I knew about the crippled local. I think Kotaku wrote a short article on it.

Granted, I'll mostly see myself playing it local with kids who would be super excited to see Pokemon go to town on one another with super flashy attacks.

Thing is, I'm more interested in this for the Tekken part than the Pokemon part. I wanna see how a traditional formula like "3D Fighting game" gets shaken up with the addition of electric rodents wearing Luchadore outfits.
It doesn't really seem to be working that hard off the VF or Tekken formula. There's no high/low, focus attacks are a thing, you've got assists; seems much more Arena fightery than Tekken. Going to a monthly today, I'll see if anyone brought it between dunking on people with Necalli

Played a bunch at our monthly. PIKACHU LIBRE IS THE MOST ELECTRIFYING POKEMON IS SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT! Mofo's got the Stone Cold Stunner, People's Elbow, and an Electric Suplex

Fun as shit. Going to have to pick up my own copy today. Definitely not based at all on your standard 3D fighter at all; it's basically the Naruto games with a 2D phase.

Oh god, just thinking of a JR announcer DLC is making me nostalgic. You know JR has a podcast now?

Piece of advice, people: Despite what the lower ranks may teach you, Burst Attacks are rather easy to mitigate. Sure, they do significant amounts of damage, but that's only on the second stage, and the second stage only happens if the first stage lands a solid hit.

So, what are your options? Either shield once the cutscene starts, get in a attack to stagger them first, or just plain dodge that initial hit. Incidently, the second stage doesn't occur if you manage to KO your opponent with the first stage.

And on the topic of Burst Attacks, the award for "Most Excessive Hit Count" is... Shadow Mewtwo! I may not have an exact count, but it was 4 digits and started with a 9. It also wouldn't surprise me if the actual total was 9999...

So, does Pokemon type play a role in strategy, or did they trade type advantage for pure beat em up action?

It's a very good thing, given that the list of fighters includes Lucario, Machamp, Blaziken, Gengar, and Chandelure. And if you remember your type chart, you'd know that Fighting vs Ghost tends to go in the Ghost's favor, at least without the use of Foresight or Oder Sleuth.

So, uh, it's been a while, hasn't it?

Well, on the off-chance that someone out there is still even remotely interested in Pokken...

Pokken Tournament DX for the Switch. Coming September 22. About the only thing I can conclusively say is that there will be 5 new fighters, and apparently 2 new supports.
