You are Ensign Amani North, a young bridge officer in the United Solar Empire Navy. While the mecha pilots engage in daring life or death robot duels, you look at a scan display back on the spaceship and exclaim dramatically as things appear on it. This is your story. Ships and Mecha
Since the latest update was so short, I've finally gotten around to writing this, threadmarked as information for future reference. I'll keep this post updated as we go along.

Acronyms:
ISM (Imperial Space Mecha): Used to designate most service mecha, still in active use by both the United Solar Empire and the Holy Solar Empire.
ISMX (Imperial Space Mecha, Experimental): Used to designate military prototypes, still in active use by both the United Solar Empire and the Holy Solar Empire.

Both empires are still using these, unwilling to cede the designation system to the other. For new units, both sides appear to be quietly avoiding using numbers claimed by the other.

IDIMX (Imperial Direct Interface Mecha, Experimental): [REDACTED]

CT (Cirntech): A line of civilian space and terrestrial models produced by Cirntech Heavy Industries

HS (Heineken Spacer): A line of civilian space models produced by Heineken Robotics.

United Solar Empire (pre-Civil War):

ISM07 Lancer: A mass production, general purpose mecha with a long service history, famous for its role in the Wars of Expansion two generations ago. Old and outmoded, but it was produced in such large numbers for so long that stockpiles of Lancers are still used by both the United Solar Empire and the Holy Solar Empire for rear guard and light duty.

ISM07fx Fenris Lancer: An improved prototype utilising the ISM07's basic frame, but with improved speed, armor and firepower. Intended as a replacement for the Lancer, it lost in competition to more durable the ISM32 Banner. Lethal in skilled hands, with a profile and readings deceptively close to the older model.

ISM16 Huntress: Limited production long range fire support model, old but powerful, with very strong thrusters and a rail cannon that are scaled down ship models. Very difficult to handle, very difficult to maintain, highly effective in the hands of an expert.

ISM32 Banner: A mass production, general purpose mecha, built to replace the ageing 07 Lancer. Heavier armoured than the Lancer, but with substantially advanced thrusters to compensate. Well armed and versatile.

ISM32b Banner Heavy Type: A variant on the 32 Banner equipped with anti-ship/station rocket armaments.

ISM32s Banner Recon Type: A variant on the 32 Banner that trades armour for advanced, long-range thrusters.

United Solar Empire (Saturn):

ISM32ex Empress Banner: A limited production variant of the ubiquitous 32 Banner, featuring superior handling and advanced sensor and communication suites.

IDIMX Morrigan: A unique, prototype unit using a cutting edge, direct neural interface immersion rig, requiring the pilot to control three drones simultaneously in addition to mecha itself. Hideously complicated for a normal pilot to use, even in ideal, non-combat scenarios.

ISMX40 Artemis: A high-performance prototype marrying the Huntress's long range fire support capabilities with more versatile close and medium range options.

Holy Solar Empire:

ISM47 Vespula: A very fast, lightly armed scouting unit well suited for long range reconnaissance and skirmishing.

ISMX17 Provespa: One of the prototype models from the Next Generation Reconnaissance Mecha project that produced the 47 Vespula. It features experimental thrusters and inertial dampening technology to enable movement at astounding speed, advanced sensor arrays, and a novel melee weapon in the form of a retractable, five metre long "energised spike" capable of punching straight through most conventional armour.

Civilian:

HS Workman: An unarmed, unarmoured space mecha designed for lifting and moving, repair and salvage work. Ubiquitous in the Saturn System, common elsewhere.

HS Workman "Colonial Special": An illegal modification of the HS Workman, converting its close range laser cutter tool into a weapon capable of breaching armour. Very light, not particularly fast, and has poor range, but better than nothing.

CT Builder MKIII: A bulky construction unit developed by Cirntech. Noted for its modular design.

CT Builder MKIV: A bulky construction unit. Sacrifices modability for improved performance time.

Acronyms:
HIMS (His/Her Imperial Majesty's Ship): Used by the United Solar Empire Navy to designate warships.

HDMS (His Divine Majesty's Ship): used by the Divine Navy of Correction to designate warships.

United Solar Empire (pre-Civil War):

Flower Class light carrier: A small, relatively cheap mecha carrier, usually used in conjunction with an escort of 2-3 corvettes to eliminate minor pirate threats or put down small scale colonial unrest. Its slow speed and modest armaments are far from ideal without an escort.

Metallic Class frigate: Metallic class frigates are the last generation workhorse of the Imperial fleet, well equipped for their size, ideal either as an escort for larger ships or for light independent duty. Design flaws in the drive array require constant maintenance.

Ranger Class heavy reconnaissance craft: The Ranger class is designed for long distance scouting in hostile territory. It's got enough firepower and defences to survive limited engagements, without sacrificing too much speed. At the same time, sacrifices did have to be made in the name of that goal -- its armour is very good for its class and role, but is thin or absent in certain less critical areas.

Singh Class Corvette: A light escort ship, well armed for its size, frequently used in conjuncture with the Flower Class.

Acknowledgements & Future Plans
Acknowledgements

I'm a little surprised myself to finally be at this point. It's just three months shy of two full years since I started — that's nine months longer than my original projections for how long I wanted to take at this. Not so bad, all considered.

I'm extremely grateful to all of my readers, both the ones who have stuck it out over the long term, and the relative newcomers who worked their way through what eventually became a fairly massive backlog. I've greatly enjoyed seeing all of you react to my work update to update, and I think that I've learned a lot about this format and grown as a writer. The quest doesn't happen without all of you. I know that this hasn't always been the most uplifting of journeys, but I hope most can at least be satisfied in the end.

In particular, I would like to give a special thanks to @Kei. Without your encouragement, support, and willingness to be a sounding board for all my ideas — good or terrible — I definitely would not all be here, wrapping this thing up. Certain parts of the quest definitely would be far worse without you pointing me in the right direction. The two of us have been writing together for a very long time now, and I'm so lucky to have you.

I also need to thank @VagueZ and @Donn for being so willing to help me sift through typo-ridden final drafts... which I will then edit again, and promptly make new typos in. Vague in particular has been extremely helpful whenever I need help figuring out something like "how big is Saturn when viewed from Titan".

Anyone who has told me that they enjoyed my work or expanded on their thoughts about it has helped keep me motivated more than I can say.

I hope you enjoy what I do next.

Future Plans

Petals of Carbon Steel: As announced at the end of the epilogue, early in the new year, I will be starting a new quest continuing the larger story where it left off in Petals of Titanium. I'll be spending the coming months getting some additional things finalised and planned. Some early details of that are:

- Told from the perspective of a new protagonist, an ordinary pilot operating a mass produced mecha.

- ... meaning another round of character generation, which I have some ideas for how to handle a bit better than I have in the past.

- Takes place largely in the Jupiter System

- Will feature a number of returning characters

Discord Server: I've been waffling on the idea for a while, but I've got enough people following my quest(s) that it's worth having a shot at, at least. If no one wants to use it, then there's no actual loss there. There are some things where it's just useful to have one over just a forum thread.

Patreon for Carbon Steel: This I've been waffling on even harder, and it's kind of embarrassing to have to broach the topic at all. At the end of the day, though, my financial situation has been getting progressively worse, and at some point I'll have to make some drastic changes, like getting an additional job which would necessarily eat into a lot of the time I spend writing, or cutting back on expenses that help me work on things like quests. I'd definitely never expect anyone to contribute to something like that, but if it worked out, even a few tens of dollars a month would be a pretty substantial help. It's definitely something where I'd have to very carefully consider how I handled it, I'd never want to let something like that make the experience worse for anyone who is just reading/voting.

Interim Projects

Between now and getting a topic up for Carbon Steel, I've got a few things I'm going to be working on, less seriously than I pursue main Petals updates.

- Petals of Titanium "what if" side stories — these are more or less what they sound like. Essentially short stories that explore how things could have looked with different protagonist backgrounds, decisions along the way, and romantic interests. I've got two in mind, at present.

- I've started a short, casual Star Wars fan quest called Fallen Empires. Just for fun, to keep me writing between now and Carbon Steel. Just plugging it here in case it sounds interesting to anyone.
