Persona: A Less-Than Cinematic Tale (Starring Hikari of PQ2)

Backstage- Part 9
Hikari had no clue how the curtains worked. Hikari wasn't sure she wanted to know how the curtains worked.

Hikari, under most circumstances, would have been forced to admit that she needed to know how the curtains worked.

But they'd been lucky. The Shadows in this area were so slow that, if they were all to run, they could never catch up with them. The Overseer Eye was presumably a good deal faster than that... but her group wasn't exactly weak, either.

Or. She liked to think they were. Even if one of them didn't rely on using a Persona that much and the other she couldn't read, if that was their only opponent... Maybe they could do something.

At the very least, it was easier for her to think about that than to admit that she needed to actually experiment with the world around her. So.

"We're going to make a run for it," She declared, quietly. They'd all, more or less, gotten into the habit of doing things quietly while they were here, even if they weren't someplace that they could be heard. "We're far from the entrance, if we go fast-"

"Maybe it won't see us?" Shinjiro finished. "I mean, I definitely can't see anything, but... Guess you don't have any other ideas."

Well. Technically, she had a few. It was just that, if it turned out well, the trip up to this point could have been a lot more interesting than just stumbling along through the dark.

But... maybe it wasn't the best idea to admit to that.

"If we knew where the FOE was, we could make our move when it was least likely to come back," Ribbon pointed out. "Are your powers still functioning strangely?"

Now would be the time to check. Hikari stepped back a little, to ensure that the summoning light didn't attract any attention, and called for Gullveig.

If anything, the results were stranger, and more incoherent, than they had ever been before. At least, when it came to the landscape.

If it were just a being, Hikari was sure she would have found it familiar. Specifically, it was slightly less confusing than when she tried to use her powers to examine Shinjiro. With him, when she learned something new, it gave her something look for, and once she found it that was a nice solid point in a sea of error messages. Mostly. The whole thing was kind of glitched out when it came to personal information. And searching for his age returned two possible results, so she couldn't even use that to settle any disputes that would undoubtedly develop.

In contrast, this place... well, she couldn't scan three feet in front of herself, but behind her... anyplace where she had stood before was entirely open to her view, including whether or not Overseer Eye was present there.

...Unfortunately, Overseer Eye was not presently where she could see it. So. That wasn't currently as helpful as it could have been, though she guessed it would be useful if she felt like waiting around to get the most time out of it as possible... particularly since they were close to the middle, at the moment, if she was remembering the actual map correctly, and there was no way of knowing if the FOE was just out of her range or not.

[ ] ...They'd make a run for it right then, and hope for the best.

[ ] They'd wait around until the Overseer Eye passed by the middle- if Hikari was right about their relative location, that'd give them as much time as possible.

[ ] They'd wait around until the Overseer Eye had gone by a few times, just to make sure they had the timings right.

For the record, if this had been done before opening the doors to the center, it absolutely would not work.

Backstage- End
"Wait for a moment," Hikari warned the others, keeping her voice disconnected from Gullveig just in case not doing so would lead to her accidentally broadcasting her voice all over the area. Sure, the Overseer Eye wasn't currently within even her expanded range, but it was always better to be careful.

The other two listened, of course, though she wasn't entirely sure why. Maybe it was just that she was the only one who could tell when something was safe or not, except that nothing in this world was safe. The entire concept of safety was foreign in a place like this, ruled by surrealism and whimsy.

Whatever the reason, they listened, and so, they waited.

Eventually, the Overseer Eye crossed into her range again, and paused, staring down the path that Hikari, Shinjiro, and Ribbon stood at the end of with a large, bulging purple eye. And the three of them kept waiting, because Hikari wasn't sure what would happen when they stepped into the FOE's line of sight, but she knew that it was something she didn't want to see.

It felt like it stood there forever. Like the three of them had been standing where they were for an eternity and a half.

But, eventually, the powerful Shadow turned and started to move again, this time entirely within Hikari's range. "Now!" She hissed to the others, stepping onto the path and running towards the back of the room as fast as she could.

Which... was not that fast. She'd never been much of one for exercise. Shinjiro and Ribbon did not have to do that much to keep up with her. It was actually kind of embarrassing, and she resolved to maybe try and do something about it at some point.

But. The running. Dodging the attention of and FOE. That was what she was doing right now.

They ran, and ran, and maybe the hallway was a bit longer than they expected, or the Overseer Eye a bit faster, but just before they reached the end of the area- a doorway without an actual door on it- a shrill screech broke the air.

Hikari didn't need to be a Navigator to know what would be behind them if she looked back. "Run faster!" If they could. She wasn't sure about that.

They ran, and got through the door, and soon heard a loud crash as the FOE came up on some sort of invisible wall at the edges of the area. It kept staring at them. They'd probably have to leave through a different section of the building.

Fortunately, all of those had already been explored.

When they reached the auditorium, which was still lightly charred, everything was as still and silent as it had been before the performance. "And we're here again..." Hikari stared out over the rows of broken seats, at the remains of destroyed instruments, and remembered the battle that had been fought there.

Had it really been such a short time ago?

"It makes sense," Ribbon stated. "All of the doors in the building lead to the center."

"Bit weird coming into a place like this, though." Shinjiro leaned against a railing. "Usually, once a group wins a fight somewhere... they don't come back. Don't really have a lot of reason to." And Hikari supposed he would know this, with the experience he had and had yet to share much about. "And... going back to old fights can hurt, sometimes."

"...IW-5?"

"...It's nothing. Come on, we should head back. Hikari-chan's probably got stuff she needs to do in the morning. Shouldn't be keeping her up too late."

"I'm not a kid..." She grumbled, shoving her hands in her pockets. But... it was a school night. So maybe it was a good idea to head back.

Still... That change of subject seemed a bit sudden, didn't it?

...In retrospect, Shinjiro had clearly had a point. Hikari wasn't sure when the last time she'd overslept so badly was, but there was now less than half an hour left before she had to be at her first class. Maybe she'd been spending a bit too much time in Phantasmagoria, lately...

Still. While a few things were probably out of her reach, she probably didn't have to run over to the classroom right away...

[ ] She'd head to Cafe Chagall, because apparently she needed some sort of caffeine or something to get through her day.
-[ ] With Tsukane Akabori.

[ ] She'd look around on her phone for any sort of interesting news.

[ ] Tsukane's roommate was loitering in the hallway, for some reason...

[ ] She'd just hurry to her first class as quickly as possible... Maybe she'd even be able to get to know her classmates!

Just as planned! ...I'm guessing if we hadn't opened the center, the door would have been sealed and we'd have cornered ourselves and gotten into a fight with the FOE?

Yep. Meanwhile, messing about with the curtains would have let you change the FOE's patrol path, while going in the direction of the fuse box would provide the key, the ability to scan the whole area... and make the Overseer Eye start moving in that direction.

Somehow acquiring the flashlights would have given you a stun to use against any and all FOEs with eyesight, but the process of acquisition would immediately trigger the appearance of Overseer Eye.

Sooo... what was the purpose of the room, again, beside being completionist? Do we have anything left to do there?

Much earlier we were told there would be rewards for fully exploring a dungeon. I think that's what we were chasing.

Though we really are stretching the definition of "fully explore" in the case of that last section.

Well, if you're willing to actually fight the Overseer Eye, you can pick up an option that'll help in avoiding a lot of future FOEs! ...And also you picked up the starter weapons there. Finally. You just skipped over the parts that would be most worth it.

Wednesday, April 19- Before Classes
Hikari dragged herself out of bed, got dressed, and silently cursed her fascination with Phantasmagoria, as it had led her to overuse of her powers until she exhausted herself.

At least, she was pretty sure that was what had happened. There weren't a lot of other things she could have done, to tire herself out like that.

Shaking those thoughts out of her mind, she opened the door and left her own, nearly running into Tsukane as he emerged from the stairwell.

"Good morning." He sounded a lot happier than he had before, though this might have been at least partly due to actually getting enough sleep, for once. "Going to class?"

"I was thinking of getting something from the cafe first," She admitted. "I... tired myself out yesterday." She decided not to admit that it was because she'd been wandering through the place created by his dreams.

"Some coffee would be nice right now..." He mused. "Mind if I come along?"

Another question that Hikari had never been asked before, and had expected never to be asked. It was just something she'd assumed had been forever out of her reach.

But just because she hadn't anticipated the question didn't mean that she didn't know the answer. "...I'd like that."

The specialty coffee was a thing that Hikari, by nature, refused to touch. Tsukane seemed to have no such concerns, taking a massive gulp of it as soon as it was presented to him. "...What does it taste like?" Hikari asked, her curiosity getting the better of her.

"It's... I don't think I can describe it," He admitted. "But there's definitely a lot of flavor. I wouldn't be drinking it if I had any other class next."

...Well. That was somewhat concerning. "...Please don't become a coffee addict."

"I make no promises." He took another sip of his drink. Hikari followed up with a sip of her own tea. "...You know, I don't think anyone but you cares I've been gone."

"What do you mean?" Hikari clearly remembered the announcement that had told her someone had gone missing, similarly to how she remembered the announcement that no one was to go underground, which had led her to doing so and discovering Phantasmagoria.

"Well... I walked into my afternoon classes yesterday, and nobody even noticed I was back. Not that I'd been... doing a lot to talk to them, or anything..."

Maybe that was his problem. He hadn't talked to them. Not that Hikari could say she was much better.

The two of them really were similar.

She didn't think that this was a good thing.

After her final class of the day, Hikari told herself that she wasn't going to go to Phantasmagoria. She had other things to do, schoolwork to focus on, people to spend time with... she couldn't just spend all of her time wandering through dreamland. Especially not one that could easily turn into a waking nightmare.

She'd do something else. Anything else. Just to prove that she wasn't basing her entire identity around this one place.

[ ] She'd go to the library and study.
-[ ] By herself.
-[ ] With Shiyuri Kosono.
-[ ] With Hanaya Chatani.

[ ] She'd visit the garden and relax.

[ ] She hadn't seen any movies in a while... maybe that would be nice.
-[ ] With Shiyuri Kosono.
-[ ] With Hanaya Chatani.

[ ] She'd visit the pharmacy, just in case... in case anything happened. Not because she was addicted to exploring Phantasmagoria or anything. Just for emergencies.

[ ] Having a craft to work on would be nice... it would help her get her mind off things.

[ ] Maybe, if she wandered aimlessly around Kusoka, something interesting would happen.

[X] Having a craft to work on would be nice... it would help her get her mind off things.

She wants to not become too focused on Persona stuff. Might as well give her a craft.
