Hello, I'm DMing for a D&D 5e campaign, and I want advice on how to portray the interactions with peasants in an hostile empire.

Little backstory: The adventurers have been hired by an island nation, Spyra, to essentially wreak havoc in an empire encompassing the "Daggerthorn Isles," appropriately named the "Daggerthorn Empire," in order to soften them up for invasion. As for why Spyra is preparing to invade... well, at one point in time, the Spyrans tried to expand beyond just a single island, and founded a colony on a neighboring island that was somewhat closer to Daggerthorn, leading to Daggerthorn pretty much razing said colony, which just happened to have the equivalent of the Crown Princess living there at the time. Simple enough, right?

Here's the thing: Daggerthorn is A) Very Xenophobic, and B) A Theocracy, and I want to portray how the average Peasant/Commoner will interact with the party (which consists of a Halfling, a Tiefling, an Anthropomorphic Turtle with multiple personality disorder, and an elf that looks like a humanoid mass of hands), who are pretending to be members of a Cult of a Hand God on a crusade (because Spyra doesn't want to be officially affiliated with them, as that would give Daggerthorn an excuse to attack Spyra before they're fully prepared. Also, the adventurers may or may not want to conquer the world for their Hand God, it's weird)

TL;DR: How do you think indoctrinated, xenophobic peasants will react to an inhuman party that may or may not be trying to convert them?

Well, it would undoubtedly involve a lot of angry, farm implement shaking. Lynch mobs of angry farmers aren't the most dignified of encounters to deal with, but maybe they'll go fetch the local Lord and get some men at arm's in the mix.

Look no further than Warhammer 40k. That is a series that accurately describes said mind set.

Either kill on sight or make them do penance for being unholy abominations so excuse to try to use services for free. Or just chase them out of town (or try.)

These are useful, but I'm more referring to that awkward moment when an devil-person comes up to you and asks you if you want to join the Cult of the Hand God.

My guess of the sequence of events would be something like:

1. Someone sees you and freaks out.
2. Other people come over to see what the ruckus is about, some of them go to fetch the village alderman, or sergeant or some other respected denizen with authority.
3. A lot of people run away from you, except some of the dumber ones and kids who stick around to hassle you, pelt you with rocks etc.
4. The alderman/sergeant/whoever gathers the able bodied in the village with farming implements and whatever actual weapons (probably spears) they happen to have and moves in on you.
5. While this is happening a messenger will probably have been sent to the local lord.
6. What happens next depends on either the people in authority or the crowd, maybe they'll just attack you, maybe they'll be willing to capture you and hold you for judgement when a higher authority shows up. It's entirely possible that there will be strife in the village as the locals bicker about what to do with you while you're being held.
