My head-cannon is that the creator specifically limited IS piloting to females only due to male tendencies of dick-comparing. As the creator was a female, she felt men were more prone to abusing IS than women, and the reason she let the protagonist use an IS is because her little sister has a crush on him.
That's just my perspective though.

... What? Going by the information you pulled from the wiki it's more absent-minded scientist did a thing, the thing had an error, the error wasn't big enough to bother correcting. Tabane Shinonono is described as not caring about Humans, period, if she does not have a personal connection to them, why would she bother with the fact that only females can use the thing when the only three people she actually cares about CAN use it.

That's correct. However, that information is not definitive. It is hinted that she didn't care, but never explicitly stated. So that's my personal opinion, that does not directly contradict canon. I don't know if it's accurate, but neither do I know it's wrong. So until the series gives more information, that's my PERSONAL head canon. I was just giving my personal opinion for contrast, as both my opinion and the wiki are speculation, not fact.

I would say she did it delibratly to shake up the status quo of male VS female, roles.
That Ichika could pilot one, came about by his sister wanting to protect him, when he was kipnapped.
For that IS AI core, what better way to protect Ichika then to have him as it's pilot?
Remember how all countries tend to switch pilots after a few years, so the pilot age stays fresh???

Yeah, my head-canon is that Shinonono was a bitch and then was served a WTF moment.
Which would explain her interest in him.
