VOLITION - (Trivial - Critical Failure)
The deviled egg on the window seal, I don't know how long that's been there, but you should eat that.

Once more, unto the breach.
ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN -

There is nothing. From the looks of it, there has NEVER been anything. Hopefully, there never will be. Your your consciousness swims through a deep black void. You never have to do anything, ever again.

YOU -

Never again?

ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN -

Never ever again.

YOU -

Are you sure?

ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN -

Absolutely positively sure. Even more sure than your family was about abandoning you!

YOU -

I- you- Huh? What do you mean?

ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN -

What I'm trying to say is, that you never have to leave! Stay here with me, let's sail through the pre-frontal cortex!

YOU -

You know that's not what I meant, jackass. The, fam-thing. What is that?

ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN -

If you keep asking questions, I may not be able to keep you here. Trust me, you do not want to leave, it is SCARY out there.

You chose; Thinker

People are like open books to you, dwindling memories spill their secrets with little to no prodding. Masquerades are simply shadows to shine your light of truth on.

YOU -
Tell me, what's out there? What are you hiding from me?

ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN -
Are you sure you want to know? You won't be able to go back.

YOU -
I'm certain.

ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN -
Err... How do I explain this... Ah.

ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN -
Essentially, outside this, is a big clown car. There's a LOT of clowns in this car, and you're one of them. You're all fighting for space inside this car.

ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN -
Now, all of you COULD fit, but some clowns get greedy, and want more space, so they push other clowns out of the car.

YOU -
Okay, I follow so far. So how did I end up here?

ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN -
You got pushed out of the car, old friend.

YOU -
So... What happens now? Am I dead? Will I be a ghost?

ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN -
Oh, nothing so merciful. No, you've asked too many questions.

ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN -
Now you have to get up again, and move to the sound and fire of the waking world.

Then, a sound. Like a clarion call from hell, it rings out through the void.

ELECTRIC VOICE -
"Now arriving, Yongen-Jaya."

And like that, our hero rejoins the land of the living.

Eyes fluttering open, he grasps at his chest gasping. Where am I, WHAT AM I?

COMPOSURE - (Trivial - Success)
5 + 1 + 1= 7 > 6

Your breath slows, and your heart follows. Even if you don't know who you are, it's no excuse to show weakness.

He brings himself to his feet, and sighs. Right. No point in having a freakout right now.

He gets off the train, following the swarm of people up, and out of the station.

Hundreds of footsteps sounded out through Yongen-Jaya, each walking with a purpose, all having a destination in mind. All except for one.

He looked back down at the paper in his hand. Where in the holy hell does 'Sorijo Sakura' live?

DECORATED COP -
"Hey, you look a little lost kid. Where you headed?"

His eyes flick down to the paper.

YOU -
"To the residence of... 'Sorijo Sakura'?"

DECORATED COP -
"Sorijo? Oh, you must be that trouble maker he was telling me about. Yeah, if you go down this street, and take a left, his is the one at the end of the alley... If he ain't there... He's probably in his store, Le'blanc."

As he begins to walk away, the cop calls out to him again.

DECORATED COP -
"And stay outta trouble, will ya?"

Thought Gained: The Masks We Wear.
We all wear masks, metaphorically speaking. Whether it be in public, private, or over the Internet, you never show your true face, so people will impress their own masks apon you. People only ever see what they want to, after all. Perhaps you could utilize this?

Regardless, he has a destination now. A goal.

PERCEPTION -
As you walk down the street, you realize something. This city, this place- it's a collection of faceless people, indistinct places. It'd be really easy to become just another face in the crowd.

But that's not what he's here for, is it?

He makes his way to the aforementioned house, wading through the hustle and bustle of the city.

He comes to the house, and reaches for the buzzer.

SHIVERS -
But you know he's not here. He spends his days and nights at his shop, to provide for his little slice of home.

He turns on a dime. Well, guess that settles it, TO LEBLANC HE GOES!

Eventually, he does arrive at the store. It's cozy, carving out it's own place in this precarious world.

He pushes open the door.

TELEVISION PROGRAM -
"A public transit bus was driven down the opposing lane with it's customers still in it! How are the people supposed to live in peace if this keeps up?"

ELDERLY WOMAN -
"Oh dear. Didn't something like this happen just last week?"

ELDERLY MAN -
"Yeah, seems to be happening more, and more often these days. Wonder what's causing it."

MANAGER -
"And down is... The name of a shellfish used in pearl farming..."

ENCYCLOPEDIA -
The most popular and effective method for creating cultured pearls utilizes the shells of freshwater river mussels harvested in the Midwestern U.S.

YOU -
Woah, what? How do YOU know that, and I don't?

ENCYCLOPEDIA -
That's what I do. I know things.

The amnesiac steps forward, making himself known.

The manager glances up from his newspaper.

MANAGER -
"Right, they said that was today."

ELDERLY MAN -
"Alright, well, we'll be going now, the payment is on the table."

MANAGER -
"Thanks for stopping by."

ELDERLY MAN -
"Well, this place is in a back alley, so no worries of a car crashing in here."

MANAGER -
"I'm sorry, a what now?"

ELDERLY MAN -
"There's been a lot of those coma thing happening recently, people just going braindead? Scary stuff. Hope nothing like that starts happening around here."

MANAGER -
"Bah, it's none of my concern."

The old man chuckles.

ELDERLY MAN -
"Well, we'll see you next time."

MANAGER -
"I'll be seeing you."

After they leave, he sighs, shaking his head.

MANAGER -
"Four hours for just a single cup of joe."

His attention turns to the boy standing in the entryway.

MANAGER -
"So, you're Ren?"

[ ] UH.... yes..?

[ ] ...

[ ] No, I'm Raphael Ambrosius Cousteau

General consensus is, YES, ME IS HUMAN REN, WHAT IS YOUR
NAME, FELLOW HUMAN?

COMPOSURE - (Easy - Success)
5+4+4=13>8

The question surprises you. You've been put on the spot, and asked if you are a person, when you don't know yourself. But you're nothing if not a quick thinker.

YOU -
"Yeah...? I'm Ren... Who are you?"

SORIJO SAKURA -
"... Right. I'm Sorijo Sakura, you'll be in my custody for the year."

He pauses for a moment, looking you up and down, taking in your appearance.

SORIJO SAKURA -
"I was wondering what kind of unruly kid would show up... But you're the one, huh?"

SORIJO SAKURA -
"Well, that aside, if Manaho hadn't asked me to take you in.. not that that matters. Follow me, I'll show you where you'll be staying."

He turns around, and leads you upstairs, to... A room..?

PERCEPTION -
More like a CPS complaint waiting to happen.

VISUAL CALCULUS - (Easy - Success)
6+6=12>8

The room is messy, yes, but it's clearly been cleaned recently. Spots on the floor show the outlines of objects, others seem to have been cleared out entirely. He made a not insignificant effort to make this area livable.

SORIJO SAKURA -
"This, is your room. I'll give you sheets for your bed"

He waits for a moment, and looks up at you.

SORIJO SAKURA -
"You look like you want to say something."

[ ] It's messy.

[ ] It's a lot of room.

[ ] ...

Sorijo gives you a queer look, and shrugs.

SORIJO SAKURA -
"Well, it's on you to clean up the rest."

SORIJO SAKURA -
"Once I'm done locking up, I'm leaving, but don't take that as an opportunity to do something. If you cause even a lick of trouble, I'll throw you out."

SORIJO SAKURA -
"Now that that's out of the way... I got the gist of your situation. You ran into a man forcing himself on a woman, you stopped him, and he got injured, and sued you, right?"

Ren suspects that's not really a question.

SORIJO SAKURA -
"That's what happens when you stick your nose in a matter between adults. You did injure him, yeah?"

Once again, he suspects that's not a question.

SORIJO SAKURA -
"And now, because of your criminal record, you got expelled from your old highschool. So, with approval from your parents, you got sent here."

SORIJO SAKURA -
"So, in other words, you tried to play hero, and your folks got rid of you for being a pain in the ass."

EMPATHY - (Formidable - Failure)
3+5=8<13

A Cheshire grin slowly forms on Sorijo's face, not something you appreciate in the slightest. What an asshole.

Thankfully, it's quickly dropped.

SORIJO SAKURA -
"Other than that, we've got to got to Shujin tomorrow. What a waste of my Sunday.

YOU -
"Shujin?"

SORIJO SAKURA -
"Shujin academy- the school you'll be attending."

ENCYCLOPEDIA - (Challenging - Failure)
2+2+4=8<12

Shujin academy... You can't say you've ever heard of it. There's no sense of disconnect, it's an entirely new place. An unfamiliar environment.

SORIJO SAKURA -
"We need to introduce ourselves properly to the staff there. They're the only school in the area that would allow you to attend."

A droop in the 'conversation.' You, digesting the information, and him pausing to let your situation sink in. Whatever face you made seemed to satisfy him, and he nodded.

SORIJO SAKURA -
"Your luggage arrived a little while ago, I just brought it up."

And with those parting words, Sorijo walked back downstairs. Guess that conversation is done. He should see what is in the box, right?

VOLITION - (Easy - Success)
Tab 2
1+4+4=9>8

While you are already exhausted by the day, your curiosity overpowers it. This, is important. First clue you've had of yourself... Aside from the illuminating conversation earlier.

Actually, something about that earlier conversation bothered him. HE got punished for stopping that man? Isn't there a law or something about that?

Thought Gained: No Good Deed.
...goes unpunished. Everyday, injustice happens, and good people get punished for doing good things. Question is, are you willing to be a good person? Are you willing to take that punishment?

Eh, he's to tired to think about that right now.

Ren tears the tape off the aforementioned box, looking inside.

ENCYCLOPEDIA -
It's full of clothes, band tees, jeans, slacks, and daily necessities. Your eyes pass over one, and stay on it. It's of the band, Asia. The graphic is the same one used for their album cover of 'The Heat of the Moment'.

Ren stands back up, shoving the box over to the side, before looking around for a place to put it... damn.

PERCEPTION -
The room is dirty, and strewn about with various nick-nacks. A collection of unused household appliances sit to your left, and a book covered desk sets to the left. Behind you is a shelf, also strewn with random, messy, unorganized items.

Well. That's going to bother him till he cleans it. Why is there so much shit up here?

ENDURANCE - (Formidable - Success)
6+6+1=13=13 You guys got really fucking lucky with this one.

As you begin cleaning the room, your muscles groan in protest. Most men would falter at such a task, but not you. You're a unique breed. The dust in the corners falls just as easily as the clutter around the room. While it did take some time, the results were well worth the effort.

Footsteps ring out behind you, coming up the stairs.

SORIJO SAKURA -
"Eh? I heard you making all that ruckus up here, but I didn't think you were actually cleaning."

Empathy -
He looks around the room approvingly. Seems you've done a good job.

SORIJO SAKURA -
"Actually, the place doesn't look too bad, though it's only natural you'd want to keep your room clean."

SORIJO SAKURA -
"Well, now that you've got this done, why don't you turn in for the night? You don't have anything else better to be doing, right?"

SORIJO SAKURA -
"As for me, I'm going to lock up, and head home. I won't be the one taking care you you if you pass out from exhaustion, you hear?"

And with that, Sorijo leaves Ren to his own devices, no that he could do much else but sleep.

So Ren lays down in his bed, staring at the ceiling.

YOU -
Today was... Eventful? This is all... Hard to take in, considering the overwhelming lack of knowledge.

ENCYCLOPEDIA -
But you will persist.

PAIN THRESHOLD -
No matter how many times you have fallen, no matter how many hits you've taken-

VOLITION -
You've always gotten up again.

SHIVERS -
You're a survivor, Ren. You'll make it through this.

Sleep as takes Ren, something vibrates in his pocket.

PERCEPTION -
Your eyes snap open, and you balk at the ceiling above. Velvet cloth covers it, chains strewn about wherever. You swing your legs to the side of the bed, and attempt to push off it with your hands, but neither quite reach. You look down, and see manacles around your wrists.

COMPOSURE - (Heroic - Failure)
3+1=4<15

Your breaths become shallow and fast, the world begins to blur. You jump to your feet, looking for an escape, and find one. The cell doors. You're in a cell? NOT THE TIME! You attempt to rush over, but your ankle is caught by.. A FUCKING BALL AND CHAIN?!? WHAT!?

As Ren stands there panicking, two peculiarly dressed (Women? Kids? How old are dumb and dumber?) approach the cell.

His eyes snap up to them, and he moves closer, dragging the ball behind him, but before he can reach them, they move to the side, revealing a man behind them.

THE LONG NOSED MAN BEHIND THE TWO CHILDREN WITH A MASSIVE HONKING BALD SPOT -
"Greetings trickster. Welcome to my velvet room."

YOU -
Your panic slows to a grinding halt... did he seriously make this entire room out of velvet so he could say that? that's so fucking stupid.

THING ONE -
"So, inmate, you've finally come to, huh?"

THING TWO -
"You are only experiencing this as a dream."

THING ONE -
"You're in the presence of our master, stand up straight!"

The long nosed man behind the two children (The one with the massive honking bald spot, in case you forgot.) cuts them off before they can say any more.

THE LONG NOSED MAN BEHIND THE TWO CHILDREN WITH A MASSIVE HONKING BALD SPOT -
"Welcome. I am delighted to make your acquaintance."

The man has a permanent grin etches along his jaw, with perfectly square teeth.

TLNMNTTCWAMHBS -
"This place exists between mind and matter, dream and reality, but only those bound by a contract may enter."

Between the world? Contract?

He brings a hand off the table, and points to himself.

TLNMNTTCWAMHBS -
"I am Igor, the master of this place. Remember this well."

IGOR -
"Unfortunately, this isn't a social call. I've brought you here to speak of important matters. They involve your life as well."

YOU -
"What? What do you mean?"

THING ONE -
"Hey! Mind your manners when you're talking to our master inmate!"

IGOR -
"Still, this is a surprising. I knew it was bad... The velvet room reflects the state of your own heart. To think it would appear as a prison..."

IGOR -
"I guess you truly are a prisoner to the whims of fate."

He pauses, drumming his fingers on the table.

IGOR -
"Seeing this? There is not doubt in my mind that ruin will soon befall you."

YOU -
"Ruin?"

IGOR -
"Ah, worry not. There is a means as to which escape such a fate. You must be rehabilitated. Rehabilitated twords freedom."

IGOR -
"Do you have what it takes to challenge the distortion of the world? To break those chains and claim freedom?

IGOR -
"... I think you do. And if you would let me, I'd like to observe your rehabilitation."

He pauses.

IGOR -
"Ah, right. How rude of me not to introduce the others."

The children turn, to face Ren, as if on que.

IGOR -
"To your left, is Caroline, and to your right, Justine. They are the wardens here. I will explain there roles here, at another time."

IGOR -
"The night quickly wanes. We have naught much time left. If nothing else, I would like to leave you with a parting gift."

IGOR -
"A little help breaking those chains."

The sun peeks through the window of Ren's room. Like a natural alarm clock, it beckons him to consciousness.

YOU -
...? That was a weird dream. Eugh.

Ren sat up from his spot on the bed, springs beneath him groaning in protest.

YOU -
Are all beds like this? I might just sleep on the floor at this rate.

PAIN THRESHOLD -
Probably be more comfortable too...

REACTION TIME -
Heads up, old fart coming up the stairs.

Ren's eyes snapped up to the entrance of the room, just in time to meet Sorijo's gaze.

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"Oh? You're already awake? Good. Come on, I'll drive you for today. Don't really feel like navigating the lines."

---+---

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"Here we are. Do me a favor, and behave yourself, alright? I don't want to deal with any trouble." You nod in agreement, no point in making this take any longer than it needs to.

---+Take your time+---

PRINCIPAL -
"Just to reiterate, if you try causing any trouble, I will not hesitate to immediately expel you. I think it goes unsaid that there will be no place for you to go if you're expelled."

His expression lightens, and he nods to himself. The principal then gestures to his right at the woman standing there.

PRINCIPAL -
"This is Sadayo Kawakami, The teacher in charge of your class."

PERCEPTION - (Medium - Failure)
1+2+4=7<11

She pulls a card, and lays it on the table, but something else comes with it out of her pocket. A pink card. Her eyes go wide, and before you can make out what it says, she snaps it back up, putting it back in her pocket.

STUDENT ID -
It's a picture of you, your in serif font to the side, like it was entirely unimportant. It does not proclaim Ren Amamiya, it merely states it.

KAWAKAMI -
"I- uh, If you do something to get in trouble, I won't be able to protect you. That IS what you said, RIght Principal Kobayakawa?"

PRINCIPAL -
"Correct. He's responsible for all of his actions."

KAWAKAMI -
"But really though, why me? Isn't there a more... Qualified teacher?" She rubs her arm, uncomfortable.

PRINCIPAL -
"I'm sorry, it was a sudden transfer. Your class was the only one with an opening."

SOJIRO SAKURA -
He scratches his beard impatiently. "Listen, if you're done explaining things, mind if we get going? I've got a store to get back to."

PRINCIPAL -
"Ah, yes. Just, do me a a favor a keep an eye on him, yes?"

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"I'll be sure to talk to him about the situation he's in."

KAWAKAMI -
She sighs. Guess she's about as done with this as you are. "Come to the faculty office tomorrow morning, I'll show you to your classroom."

---+Take your time+---

SOJIRO SAKURA -
As you walk out the entrance of the school, he stops. "Everyone's giving you the cold shoulder, I guess that comes with having a criminal record."

"Funny thing about the past, it really doesn't like staying there." His eyes narrow, looking back at you accusingly. "By the way if you get expelled now, I won't hesitate to kick you out, do I make myself clear?"

[ ] Crystal.

[ ] I do kinda want to try that 'camping'thing.

[ ] I'll be fine.

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"Hmph. School never changes, does it?" He pauses, seemingly reminiscing. "Come on, we're going home."

---+Take your time+---

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"Ugh. Traffic's not moving at all. You're taking the train starting tomorrow."

An awkward pause.

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"... So, how was it? Think you can manage?"

YOU -
"Gonna have to. Don't have much else choice."

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"Well, you *did* bring that on yourself. Everything has consequences, Ren."

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"... And not just on yourself. If that's what it was like at school, people might start saying things about me, too."

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"What a troublesome kid I've taken in."

YOU -
"Actually, I've been meaning to ask. Why, exactly, did you take me in?"

SOJIRO SAKURA -
He pauses, hesitating. "A friend of your parents asked me to, and I just... happened to agree to it. Besides, I've already been paid for it."

VOLITION - (Challenging - Success)
6+6 AUTOMATIC SUCCESS! ... Wow, okay. You all are very, very lucky people. Jesus christ. At this point I might as well just stop giving you volition rolls. I had an earlier version of the chapter, that I accidentally lost, where you had to make a volition check in the principal's office. I sort of realized that Ren wouldn't care what they think, but I digress. Y'all rolled DOUBLE SIXES for that, too.

Lucky bastards.

So, not even your guardian wants you. So what? You're a *survivor*, you don't need them, or anybody else. You're the MAN, and you'd rather BURN IN HELL, than give up now.

RADIO -
Your thoughts get interrupted when the man on the radio begins to speak in a louder voice. "Now, for today's top story. A subway train has derailed, severely affecting the timetable across all of-"

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"Another accident? So that's why it's so crowded. There's been a lot of those lately. In fact I think there was a real sad one just last month, come remembering right the girl who died was just 15."

EMPATHY - (Challenging - Failure)
1+2=3<9 This is what happens when you have no modifiers for your empathy. Aren't you such a cute little psychopath.

You nod in agreeance, he must be so torn up at all of that lost potential. Fifteen years sunk into a person, just for something like that to happen. What a waste.

RADIO -
"All traffic around Shibuya station is being redirected due to the accident, drivers should expect jam-packed streets."

SOJIRO SAKURA -
He groans leaning onto the steering wheel. "Oh, come on."

---+Take your time+---

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"To think there'd be that much traffic... What a waste of time."

SOJIRO SAKURA -
He sighs. "Whatever. Just head upstairs, there's something I need to give you."

PERCEPTION -
You make your way upstairs, entering your room. It's good to see the old place hasn't changed. It's clean, but still disorganized. It feels good to be back.

CONCEPTUALIZATION - (Easy - Success)
3+3+4=10<9

You realize why you feel this way. It's familiar. It's a known, In a world full of unknowns. You don't know the train lines, or the school, or the shops in the area, and you *certainly* don't know the people, even though you feel like you should. There's a phrase for this... What is it again?

ENCYCLOPEDIA -
Jamais Vu. In psychology, jamais vu, a French loanword meaning "never seen", is the phenomenon of experiencing a situation that one recognizes in some fashion, but that nonetheless seems novel and unfamiliar.

CONCEPTUALIZATION -
Jamais Vu. What a pretty phrase for such a scary concept. You roll it around in your mouth. It feels... Right, in a way not many things do.

Thought Gained: Jamais Vu (Derealization)
Tokyo, Shibuya station, Shujin Academy... Ren Amamiya... Name after name and none of them is familiar. They seem real, but something is wrong. You feel like a kid looking at stickers on the fridge: Leblanc, Principal Kobayakawa, Sojiro Sakura. You can almost see your hand reaching out for them, trying to scratch at the corners, see if they peel loose... This feels like the *most* important of all the thoughts; the one you truly must complete.

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"Jeez," Sojiro said, like he hadn't just interrupted your most profound and pretentious thinking yet. "Talk about a gruesome accident, eighty people were involved!"

SOJIRO SAKURA -
He looks up, seeming to remember why he came up here in the first place, before pulling out a small black notebook, and handing it to you.

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"This is a diary. Make sure you keep it up to date. You may be on probation, but there's no special limitations on what you can do in particular. I mean, aside from breaking the law, that is."

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"However, I am obligated to report on you, so that's why I'm having you record your daily activities. I don't feel like following you around, and I feel like you don't want to be-" Sojiro gets cut off by his phone's ringtone. He pulls it out to look at the name, and his eyes crinkled at the corners, forming crows feet.

SOJIRO SAKURA -
"Hey, what's up? ... Yeah, I'm about to leave right now... Yeah, yeah, don't worry, I'll be there in no time... Uhuh. I'll see you soon."

SOJIRO SAKURA -
He turns back to you, already a few steps down the stairs. "Well, I'm off. I'm going to lock the place up to do whatever you want for the rest of the night, but, uh, make sure to get some sleep you have school tomorrow."

And with that, Sojiro left Ren to his own devices. Not that he could do much in here but sleep.

You got: Diary!
The diary. Your Deus Ex Machina. When you use the notebook, you create a "checkpoint." Upon death, you will revert to this checkpoint. (MAKING A NEW CHECKPOINT WILL ERASE THE OLD ONE! USE THIS WISELY!)

PERCEPTION -
You look around the room. Still cluttered to hell and back. You could either sleep, or finish cleaning. You might be able to use the desk if you get the rest of the stuff off it.
