Well, we got the horse that rides rough.
Do we face the ambush in the forest, the late arrival on the hills.... or gamble on the river?

Personally, i would go with the river if we can make a boat quickly that can carry us and the horse, if the stream is big enough to carry us AND flows the way we need to go.

You may certainly do that, yes.

Now, that does come with some downsides—weight and freedom of movement being the obvious—but armor is armor.


I'd suggest we do that then; we have birch all around us and a free moment, things that may not occur further down the line. But not taking so much time as to seriously delay us nor so piling on so much we risk overburdening our horse.

I think that may be a mistake when trying to get to the Thing as quickly as possible. It's a good call long term once we're not rushing or if we were going the route with near-certain fighting, but not when speed is of the essence and we're hoping to avoid too many additional fights.

I'd like to prioritize movement and looking like a well groomed drengr instead of a weirdo when we roll up.

Maybe I'd feel different if we had some abilities to reinforce the improvised armor besides stickiness.

Got it in one. I'll give more details next update, should Barki arrive at the Thing.

Essentially, there are two levels of outlawry in Norse society. Full outlaws have 0 protections under the law while lesser outlaws have some.

Obviously, it's a fair bit more complicated than that, but I'll save that for the update proper.
 
It's about deciding who's going to be actively hunting us down, and if we're just trying to survive for three years or if we're Absolutely Fucked and have to either leave Norse lands or just fucking die eventually because we've been Unpersoned and there's no way to stop being a Full Outlaw.

A Lesser Outlaw, for instance, can't get their property taken and their stuff is still inherited, and if they survive three years in the bush all is forgiven in the name of the Law and you get your stuff back. A Full Outlaw can't ever be taken back and all of your stuff is now the property of whoever's in charge, and can be distributed as they please.

Some more things about the different Outlawings (specifically for Iceland) that were shared on Discord:

At a lesser Outlawing you get three places of immunity. They can not be sacred places (and entering one of those ups your Outlawing to a full one), but otherwise you can choose them (at least that was my understanding). Additionally, on the routes between those places you are also immune from your Outlawing. In return, every summer you have to ask at least three ships for passage from Iceland. "Immunity" here means that the law applies to you as usual, and others can't just come up and kill you.

A full Outlawing does obviously not have those things...
 
My personal feeling is that the benefits of lesser outlawry are somewhat illusory within the bounds of the narrative we're creating. We already know we're going to want to leave Iceland rather than hunker down, so the immunity is of limited use. Running out the clock would be a pretty unsatisfying end to the quest as opposed to coming back with both sufficient proof and sufficient power, so I don't think it will make that much difference in the end. I actually think that the ability to run out the clock isn't actually a good thing for the narrative - the point of the premise is to undergo the pressures of outlawry and come out the stronger for those pressures. If it comes down to gaining some resource that helps us on our outlawry, as opposed to mediating the degree of the outlawry, I'm more likely to choose the former, all other things being equal. That said, we'll see how things play out.

I strongly disagree for a few reasons, but most notably the property issue. Our property remains ours and under our wife's care if it's a Lesser Outlawing which is really important narratively in giving her protection and us something to come back to. The other stuff is also very useful, but that's the most important narrative bit.

I see where you're coming from, and it depends on what the tradeoffs would be, but the Lesser would allow us to Leave much more safely and would make missing passage for a season or two a little easier to survive.

I also think our long term planning and morale would be much easier if the safe zones could allow us to communicate with our network occasionally.

To what Deadman said above: Our wife Literally being in a higher social class if we get a Lesser outlawing is by itself enough reason to try really hard to make that happen.

Yeah, but at the time we come back with Sufficient Power, well, A) the quest will be more or less over, and B) I suspect our property here will no longer be of significant concern, or so my auguries read.
