Ostentum (Magic Knight Errant Quest)

[X] Look for Idunna.

I forgot Idunna said we'd find something here in Charnet. Time to go see if that's true. We'll hire a Merc later.

You can't get your thoughts off of that suspicious woman. If she's in this town, you ought to seek her out and get some answers. Once again you share your intentions with Ancillas, and he supports the idea. He seems to want to find her, as well.

So, to start your search. You have zero clues, absolutely no idea where she could be, what she could be doing or if she's even still in this city - she is apparently traveling in a hurry, to have reached this town before you.

In that case, you need to just start asking around. It could take some time before you find anything, assuming you find anything at all, but there's not much else to do. If nothing else, anyone who has seen her should remember. Her unusual appearance is helpful, there.

Time to get to work. You start with approaching some of the patrons around the inn's main room...

--

Some time later, you've spoken to everyone at the inn that was willing to answer you. A few recall seeing her, sure, but only as much as the bartender did, which is to say, they only know that she walked inside some time ago.

You moved on to areas around the inn with Ancillas in tow. Some loiterers in the vicinity, a simple stall just down the road - nothing. At the small shop up the road, though...

--

You stand before the relatively tiny proprietor of this shop. A building full of various flora of all kinds, thick with mixed scents of medicine, the wilderness, and...er, perfume. The former two typical of a business like this, selling implements to make drink, medicine and even elixirs. The latter, eh, apparently the woman in charge here likes her perfume. And fairly strong perfume it is...

You share with her that you're looking for a woman, and describe her as you have to everyone else.

"Yeah, sounds familiar, I'd say I seen her. Did business with her, in fact."

"Really?"

"Ah-huh. Why's it you want to know, miss?" the woman running the shop looks you up and down, worried, "If she's a criminal, I tell you I had no way of knowin', and-"

"No, it's nothing like that," hopefully, you think to yourself, "I'm just looking for her. If you know where she could have gone, I'd be grateful if you told me."

"Well, sorry to say I only saw her headin' that way when she walked out," she points out the door, further up the road, the same way you were going when you arrived here, "Couldn't tell you much more. She hardly said a word, awkward one she was. Named some herbs, a few roots, even bought some special brew I had here - cost a good penny, hehe, she had deep pockets," she drawls with a grin.

Your serious stare snaps her out of her post-profit delight.

"Eh, well...I tried makin' a bit of conversation with her..." she starts. You don't doubt her, she seems talkative. "But I hardly got two words out of her. 'What you gonna be needing these for?' Nothing. 'You don't seem from around here. Travelin'?' 'North', and that was it! Tell you, there's a point where it goes past just being a woman-of-few-words and starts just being rude, you know?"

"Hm. I see." You nod along as she raves about her encounter with the woman that must have been Idunna.

So, you've now found someone who hasn't just seen her, but spoke to her, however brief it was. And now, your only clues are that she apparently bought some herbs, roots, a "special brew", and that the only other thing she said was "north". How wonderfully vague.

"You listenin' anymore, girly? Hello?"

"Ah, uh, thank you for your time, ma'am." You quickly thank the shop's owner and hurry out with Ancillas, her ranting fading out of your ears as you walk away.

Ugh. So, in summary...your only clue is now "north". Fantastic. Well, you can guess that means she was going to continue heading north. Again, the same direction you intended to go. You could check around the gate and see if she's already gone.

--

You make your way downtown, navigating the unfamiliar streets until you've reached the north end of the city. You check with the sentries posted at the gate leading to the northern road, and this time you find some answers much more quickly.

"Hm? Ah. Mhm. Someone that looked like that was hanging about some time ago."

"'Hanging about'? What do you mean?"

He shrugs. "Saw her standing around a while back. She left, then came walking back later, loitered about, wandered off...you get it."

"Wait...so has she left the city?" you inquire, confused.

"Don't recall seeing her pass out the gate."

You sigh. So then, she's still around...?

"Where'd she last go? Do you know?"

"Mmmhh..." the sentry looks away in thought, "Oh." he suddenly blurts with a dumb look. He points over your shoulder.

You turn to see what he's pointing to. Crossing the plaza leading to the gate, you see the objective of your search. That woman, Idunna, is walking toward the gate, leading a horse behind her.

You stand there with hardly masked surprise. You were not expecting to find her still in the city, honestly.

As she draws nearer, you quickly thank the sentry and move to meet her. You stop in her path and address her - she stops as you bark,

"Excuse me," you stand firm, "Idunna, right?"

"Miss Lethis." She answers firmly, not meeting your eyes, instead staring behind you toward the city gate.

You've found Idunna. Now...

[] You have questions.

[] Just let her on her way.

"We've a few questions we'd like to ask, but I'd rather not ask them here." you inch aside, as to offer her to continue her walk, "So we'd like to accompany you outside, if you don't mind?" You finish, your tone less like asking permission and more like demanding.

Idunna responds with a miniscule nod and heads forward. You follow her, Ancillas still following you, and head leisurely out the city gates.

You walk silently for some time, before your patience runs thin and you stop her once again.

"This is far enough," you say, lightly planting your hand on her shoulder. She looks over said shoulder at you with a serious gaze.

"I've questions," you repeat your earlier sentiment and go on, "You told us to come to Charnet. What exactly were we supposed to learn here?" You squint hard, staring suspiciously at her.

"What," she says harshly, "Do you mean to tell me, you haven't learned a thing?"

"Don't answer my question with a question." You stare critically at the hard-faced woman.

"Don't presume your questioning entitles you to an answer," she stares critically at you.

"Do you mean to provoke me?" You glare in response to her rudeness.

"I should be asking that. Aren't you being awfully rude?" She scowls in response.

"You-"

"Miss Lethis..."

You stop and turn to the source of the concerned voice, Ancillas. He looks up between the two of you with worry.

You heave a deep sigh as you face Idunna again.

"Should I assume you don't intend to answer me?"

She slowly shakes her head, "I've hardly any reason to trust you, after all."

"Wh- I've even less reason to trust you." your temper lightly flares back up.

"Oh, is that so?"

"Yes! In fact-" you remember your first meeting with her, and jab your finger out to point at her, "You knew my name before I offered it. Care to explain how that is?"

"Hah, I bet you'd like to know," she spits back in defiance.

You clench your fist.

"Um..." Ancillas steps forward, "You seemed to know a lot, before, you know, with how you knew Lethis...so, um...you know me too, right?"

"Yes," Idunna answers softly, "I do...um, quite well, actually."

"But..." he pauses and swallows nervously, "How? I...don't know you..."

You watch Idunna carefully as Ancillas questions her. The way her temperament changes when she talks to him...you don't like it.

She looks down with light concern, "Oh, it's probably not so bad as you think. It's just, well...I know everyone, more or less..." she trails off, almost sounding...nervous? And- wait. Huh?

"What do you mean you know 'everyone'?" You cut back in.

"Well," she stiffens back up, "I suppose to satisfy your nosy guardian, I'll specify that I only know everyone that I've seen before."

"Do you think this is a joke?" You spit harshly. She dances around every question, then when you think she's going to tell you something, it's just nonsense meant to waste your time even more. You've had just enough-

"A joke? Please, I know you aren't one for jokes. Especially when someone you so loathe is near," Idunna rolls her eyes, "But as I've said-"

"Don't presume to know me so well, you-" you start to step forward when she loudly interrupts you.

"Presume? Did I not say that I know everyone? You'd do well to know, Miss Lethis," she prods your shoulder, "that I know you better than you know yourself."

Hahhhh?

"That is enough of your-" you raise your arm to grab her when Ancillas steps in front of you again.

"Wait, please, what do you mean?" He blurts to the woman, "You have to understand, that just sounds so strange...what do you mean by that?" he stares sincerely at her.

She looks down earnestly, "It may sound strange, yet it's true..." she brushes some of her hair aside as she stares down, "It's true...but I don't know if I can explain...um..." Idunna shuffles quietly.

"I hope for your sake you aren't trying to trick us." You grab her attention again.

"You may take me for a fool," she firms up once more, staring cautiously at you, "But I know better than to tell lies to people like you."

You resist the strong urge to rub your forehead and temples. Okay. She's still speaking nonsense, and she's said something strange. Now what?

[] You should ask further.
-[] But what to ask? She seems set on dodging all of your questions.

[] Leave it, and leave her, you've had enough of this.

Sounds like she's someone close to Ancillas. Either she's a retainer to the Prince, or is actually the Princess.

Of course, she could also be a time traveler!

[x] Let Ancillas do the questioning. She responds better to him anyway.

Relying on Ancillas to do the talking is very un-knightly. We're the one who's supposed to do all the work! Anything less would be very un-chivalrous of us!

[X] Why can't she explain? Try! You'd think someone as knowledgeable as her could string together a sentence or two.

Lethis is being rather rash, maybe we can use that for a insult or two to provoke Idunna into saying things she shouldn't? Risky, yes, but I'd rather not be belittled like this.

That sounds more like something out of pride. Ancillas is already making progress. Give him a chance.

That, and Spite. We're a Knight after all, and that means more than being really good at fighting and having a fancy set of armor.

Ancillas will butt in and ask his questions, but Lethis won't blow up too much that Ancillas' voice won't be heard. I'm pretty sure she'll even encourage it!

We haven't really seen too much of Lethis' character, so I'm willing to express a character flaw when the opportunity presents itself.

I think pressing too hard with the questioning would shoo Idunna away or make her less likely to provide answers. Let the more diplomatic one handle it for now.

Is probably a hint from the GM that we should ask things in a way that prevents her from dodging our questions. Besides, Idunna doesn't seem the type to clamp up or run away when challenged. She talks like she has all the cards, so that confidence will probably make her reply instead.

This. It may not be the most chivalrous option, but the prince is our best hope. Besides, this update gives me theories on Idunna's personality, but we will need to see her interact with others in order to confirm or deny. She acts headstrong around the tough and stubborn Lethis, but talking to Ancillas makes her sound as shy and timid as him. This can't be a coincidence.

Her temperament seems to match that of whoever's talking to her. Magic or something? Would explain why she's not keen on talking with people.

For whatever irritating reason, Idunna doesn't respond well to you. It may be better to let Ancillas try to talk to her. As the silence grows uncomfortable, Ancillas looks to you with concern. You nod to him, and look sideways at Idunna.

"S..o...you're telling the truth?" Ancillas probes curiously, looking back to Idunna.

"I am, really...!" She nods a few times, "I wouldn't lie to you, I-I really wouldn't..."

"O-okay, I understand," Ancillas nods himself, "But...um..." he pauses, searching for what exactly to say. An interrogator, he is not...but you refrain from jumping back in.

"Uh, what about...um...you said to miss Lethis...that you knew her really well..."

Idunna nods once more. "Uh-huh...better than she does..."

"What...do you mean? What is it you know about her?"

"Um...everything."

Silence.

"U...mmmm..." Ancillas looks at her uncertainly.

"It's true...but...I'm unsure if I can explain...it's just...uh..."

Idunna stammers, then trails off; silence falls again. After a moment, Ancillas turns back to you with a look that says he's got no clue what to say. An interrogator...he is not.

[] Questioning?

[] That's enough out of her, leave her be.
