[X] Plan: Community starts at home
-[X] Yes, he does
-[X] Visit your Heroes
You worked your morning routine of tracking expenses, donations and website maintenance. It did little to distract the fact your home is empty again. Not to mention the gnawing hyper awareness of every buzz and click and smell in a fit of restlessness.
There is only one remedy, to resolve the bad feeling from all parties, visiting your heroes and Mr. Grimm. With gifts of course.
The hospital itself was a standard multi-story building with standard white walls, white floors broken up by thick blocks of lines leading to different wings like wire ribbons. Some guidance by helpful nurses and maps later, you found yourself looking at Destiny dressed in a hospital gown, hooked to an iv drop, watching tv, bored out of her mind.
"Good afternoon Ms. Destiny." You said with a small curtsy. "Congratulations on your victory. The papers seem to be quite pleased with you all! I even see quite a few gifts from your new fans." You state pointing to letters and gifts sorts into piles.
"It's a bit nice I guess." Destiny muttered blearily as she turned off the tele. "Why are you here?"
You were slightly taken aback by your employees' bluntness, but you understood.
"To see if you want to talk about the deceased." You state as you took a seat. "I have some better news. Frankie Maxwell was one of the people you happened to knock out cold. He is also one of the old ladies' grand nephew that regularly goes to Boris' kitchen, he decided that for a lighter sentence and a lighter conscience to tell the authorities where Drew Wolfe's body was buried!" You say trying to frame it as a positive. "The bad guys are imprisoned, one chose to make amends, the remaining ladies are safe and sound, and you are all still alive! Everyone is happy with you."
"That doesn't make me feel better." Destiny says, not even bothering to look at you.
"Are you angry with me Destiny?"
"Yes. I am." she says looking back at you with some heat back in her eyes. "It isn't fair to blame you, and I know that. I could be there, and I know I would have failed. I already have enough failures on my plate to know that. Still hurts." She proclaimed, half a vent and half confessing to a past she seems a bit more reluctant to get into.
You choose your words very carefully. "We do what we can. And I think it's great you knew your limits and care this much. I appreciate it, and so does Magic Agent." You say, making sure to put on the light smile with the right facial expressions to express sincerity.
"I even let myself get blindsided, dammit." Destiny groaned, lying back in bed.
"And that is why I was elated when you all came up with that wonderful plan. You covered each other's weak-spots, and can watch each other's backs. Even the best of us can get hit with something unexpected. If you want, we can try to see if we can get someone to help regarding these, supernatural foes. I'm sure Mr. Grimm or someone else would be kind enough to aid you."
Destiny seemed to perk up a bit "At least it'll give me something to work on."
"Well, if that is all, I'll just visit the others."
"Thanks." Destiny said. "I appreciate it. Sorry to venting at you."
"No worries. I'm just glad that you are willing to speak to me." You say, dropping off some pears.
Your next visit to Magic Agent was less stressful. She just seemed a bit malnourished from the events but seems to have returned some color back into her face.
"Destiny's not happy isn't she?" Magic Agents said pouring over her sandwich lunch. "She doesn't like it when she sees trouble and can't stop it. She told me it's because of some stuff that happened to her." Magic Agent said between bites. "I mean, it's the same for me too, just, for her she can see it immediately and is whisked away. She's been stuck with that for who knows how long. Can you even imagine trying to do things like hold a barista job before being in the middle of a firefight or just going to the restroom? It'd be horrible!" Magic agent explained at length, practically signing the entire thing with her hands.
"It does sound rather inconvenient." You reply, trying to make sure you keep each detail in hand. "There is one thing I wanted to ask you. Do you know how you managed to banish that demon?" You inquire.
"I, I dunno." She shrugs. "I just, didn't want it there, hit the medallion with my staff and it just withered into nothing." She described. "I'm as surprised as everyone else is. I don't think that banishment is a trick that is in my coin, and it never happened before. Then again I never met a literal monster like that before. Like yeah in the news but never in person you know?"
"Powers can be difficult to define." you state. "Are you sure that everything is okay?"
"Yeah I guess. I don't feel any different, and the coin is safe, and Destiny is safe too. I am sad about Mrs. Wolfe, I'm glad she's in a better place. I'm happy that my friend and Mr. Grimm are okay. It's better than the other options. I suppose I'm a bit sad I couldn't do more, but I just want to help. Honestly I'm just more worried about Destiny. She's my friend and I don't like it when she's sad you know?"
"I know. She did seem a tad happier when she got to talk a bit. I'm sure once you both are released you can talk about it all you like and the things you want to try." You chirp.
"Of course we will! Friends forever and all that."
"I'm glad to here Mrs. Wolfe's body will be taken care of. I'll be sure to ask for an invite to the funeral. It is the least I can do." Mr. Grimm says looking at you, being careful not to move too much or risk irritating his ribcage.
"But what of your body?" You inquired, hand feeding him a peeled orange slice. "I had worse. It wouldn't be the first time some man with delusions of grandeur decided I spent too much time being alive."
You chuckle, believing it to be an appropriate response.
"I hope that you can have a full recovery soon. I would be more than glad to have you over for tea." You smile.
"I would appreciate that." Mr. Grimm said, trying not to wince. "I am concerned about one thing."
"And that is?"
"That medallion. I had a contact try to look into Mr. Leech's background. Medical student, middling grades, nothing telling me how he got that medallion or where. And in my current state, trying to interrogate him seems ill advised. Maybe we're lucky and it's just some random trinket that fell between the cracks Mr. Leech just so happened to stumble upon it. Or maybe there's something more. Either way, I will find the truth." Mr. Grimm said with conviction.
"I'm sure you will be able to find the truth" you reply, making sure to add that detail to show you were paying attention.
"Is there anything I can get you in the meantime?"
"Would you be so kind as to offer me a batch of black pepper cookies?"
"A bit of an unusual request, but I can oblige."
"We all our own peculiar tastes Mrs. Ripley." Mr. Grimm Chuckled.
Your walk home was quiet, peaceful. Felt like no one was following or keeping an eye on you. A strange feeling you still need to get used to, but that is a consequence of being a Normal Human Being. With there still being a bit of time before your heroes can be released with a clean bill of health, you decide to spend the night heading the rooftop.
The rooftop of your complex was a gravel pit, free of weeds thanks to your efforts and a set of plastic chairs you had set up earlier. It is no observatory, but it is close enough. You take some time to lay in one of the chairs, taking in the sights of buildings, stores and the skyline. Some parts are noticeably more vibrant, such as the business districts or the more modern apartments in the far distance like those who lived there existed on another planet.
Part of you wonders how it would be back in that sort of place. But it's too late now. It is better to just focus on the now and-
You could have been everything if you just didn't hesitate
It was all yours and no one could have stopped you
Everyone wanted this and all you had to do was kill one, Simple. STUPID-
Pain stabbed into your skull like a red hot rail spike, causing you to crash onto the rocky roof. You clutched your head like someone just cracked it with a tire iron, trying your best to regulate your hampered breathing.
It doesn't make sense. You strain to look around as if doing so would find some hidden projector or beam or speaker that is tempting you, but all you saw were dusty buildings, plastic chairs, a smoggy sky and yourself lain out on the pebbly ground.
You are going to pretend that didn't happen, and just head back downstairs. It's okay, some nice things are for other people.
Some time later and your heroes are back in action with no lasting ill effects.
Both seemed relieved to go back to a normal routine of patrols, greeting passersbys and politely asking criminals to leave people alone. You yourself was more than happy to assist Mr. Boris every once in a while to help supplement his cooking needs whenever possible.
Meanwhile you have found some new opportunities from those interested in the skillset of you and your heroes.
