I mean, it's kinda a landslide already, but...

I like the fast ships, and honestly, getting in good with the revenue cutters long-term means we really can take the entire empire quickly.

I like the idea of rescuing a damsel from pirates. ;)

We aren't really on any timelines right now, let's take advantage of the wandering now before plots ramp up.

Sidewise bloat doesn't really feel like a thing in this quest? Given how episodic it is- we drift in and out of other people's stories, and that's ok. We're here to burn evil and sleep with many women, it's almost out of character to bring things to a satisfactory conclusion before ditching out.

The Value of Money
How much is twelve gold coins in the Empire worth?

I'm going to use your question as an excuse to jump in with an explanation of money and its value in the Empire/this quest.

So! Money in the Empire comes in three denominations - you have brass pfennings (also called pennies), silver shillings and gold crowns. There are twelve pennies to the shilling, and twenty shillings to the crown (which means 240 pennies to the crown). There's also some intermediary coinage, like the 'noble', which is one third of a crown (or six shillings and eight pennies, or roughly eighty pennies) but they're not directly important here.

How much is a given coin worth? Well, the simple way to eyeball it is to assume that a pfenning is worth whatever the basic local currency in your country is. For me that's pound sterling, for americans that would be a dollar. Which, yes, means that when Hubkind paid Erika ten gold crowns for her work he was more or less giving her two and a half grand. Being a murderous tool of the state religion pays well.

If you wanted to compare it in terms of what it can buy... ten pfennings is the listed price for a day's groceries in the average town market. So for a trip to Marienburg in a luxury liner Erika is looking at about three thousand dollars and/or enough cash to feed herself for six months to a year.

If you wanted to look at it in terms of wages, the game system offers the ability to spend a week of downtime earning in accordance with your profession, at which point you generate a certain amount of cash after all expenses are paid. Erika could expect to earn about a crown for a week's magical consultation/general service as a magister, after she's had her fill of food, drink and ladies of negotiable virtue. A townsman - your average shopkeeper, carpenter, clerk or what have you - would earn an average of about ten to twelve shillings after expenses.

I just want to set a boat on fire. Hopefully it won't be the one with our luggage in it.

[X] Karl's Smile. A merchant trading vessel with space for passengers as well as cargo, the Smile is slower and less comfortable, but also considerably cheaper. Meals are not included, and will need to be attended to personally during the many overnight stops, but privacy and a chance to sample every tavern from here to Marienburg isn't a bad thing… 3 Gold Crowns, two weeks.

Wouldn't going up the Reik be faster than circling to the sea though?

We are going down the Reik to Marienburg. If we went up the Reik we would be traveling south-east, which is not what we want.

We could go directly overland, but that route leads through Drakwald Forest, which is some kind of dark, dangerous medieval forest fortified with Beastmen, so I would prefer taking a ship.

So, I'm voting for the cruise liner, because I think Erika deserves a holiday, I would also be happy if the river cutter wins, that sounds fun too.

This sounds like it would be a great way to meet some interesting charactrs, particularly because I suspect @Maugan Ra will not be able to resist to temptation to do Death on the Nile Reik, and we can meet Warhammer Hercule Poirot as he investigates the murder, who I hope will be a halfling from the Westerlands.

Normally I'd think this was too expensive but I'm curious how/if you would rejig the adventures set on this liner for Erika.

I mean it is entirely possible to get to Nordland - more specifically Salzenmund, the capital - without going near Marienburg. You could go up the Talabec then across, or cut across Middenland, or even go the long way round via Kislev if you really wanted to. But Erika is going this way because I want her to go to Marienburg.

Largely because Marienburg is what you get if you take Venice and then add a quite frankly excessive quantity of dutch.

There's presumably also the fact that water travel is faster than land travel, given the tech level the Empire has. Plus, all the horrible monsters that live in the forests.

On the water we still have to contend with Merwyrms and River Trolls, which, pound for pound are alot worse than most threats in the woods near a road.

Especially when fighting on a fragile wooden boat of any kind.

AFAIK there aren't any Sea Trolls, although there are River Trolls. But the same can be said about big threats staying away from populated areas. Not to mention, unlike with the roads, it's entirely possible the sea becomes too shallow for big things near the shore.

Mostly because I want to see Erica sub shoulders with the rich and famous and feel like there would be a lot more intrigue and social tact than outright curbstomps as a bright wizard in sea combat. I want to see Erica throw her new social position around. Furthermore, Erica deserves to spoil herself after finishing the Magister trials.

The biggest trouble with travelling by sea is that we're a fire wizard. Not only does the ocean offer some protection from our magic, wooden ships burn.

Huh, that's closer together than I would have thought, with a Magister making only twice what the average shopkeep makes. Of course, I assume that's boring minor tasks and stuff like advising important nobles pays way better.
