Of Aura and Corruption (Terraria x RWBY)

[X] Agree with Weiss that a shelter isn't necessary and suggest that you should chance it with a simple campfire.

[x] Say that you don't care either way. It's ultimately Ruby's call.

[X] He might be a bit crazy, but suggest that you at least try to build a shelter anyway. Besides, what if it suddenly rains overnight?

1.3 - Night 1 - 0
Side note: with regards to the other Terraria crossover you tried, 1.4 actually has a Madoka costume in the game. I somehow managed to pick it up the very first time I went to the Traveling Merchant.
//Is there? I haven't seen him carrying it, and checking the wiki it doesn't seem like he has anything like that in his inventory (though it could also be that they haven't fully updated that page yet.)

[X] Agree with Weiss that a shelter isn't necessary and suggest that you should chance it with a simple campfire.
================================
"I mean, it might be nice to have, but I don't think we really need one." you say, "Why don't we just chance it with a campfire? We can probably take whatever Grimm, if any, come during the night."

"I guess that settles it, then." Ruby nods before breaking the huddle.

"Did you come to a decision?" Brian asks.

"Yeah, we decided that we're not going to be build a shelter."

He quirks an eyebrow in surprise, "Are you sure?"

"Yeah. Don't worry, though. We're huntresses in training, and there doesn't seem to be any Grimm around right now, so we can probably take whatever comes at us."

He shakes his head, "Well, suit yourself... I'll try to help you the best I can, in that case. Do you have any other plans before nightfall? Judging by the position of the sun in the sky, we have a few hours before sunset."

"I guess we'll find somewhere to make camp, first. After that, hmm... I guess we'll think of something then."

***
Shortly afterwards, the team decides that the bottom of a small cliff that's relatively close to where you met Brian would be an ideal place to make camp. Soon, you find yourselves fanning out to gather firewood. Despite being in a forested area, most of the twigs you find are rather small, making it somewhat difficult to find ideal wood to burn...

All this time, Brian was doing nothing. Instead, he seemed to opt to observe the four of you from a nearby boulder. You find it a bit annoying, but decide to keep quiet about it.

"You know, it would be far more efficient if you were to cut down one of the trees and use the wood from that for the fire." He speaks up after a while, prompting the team to stop and stare at him.

"Uh... have you ever made a campfire before?" you question, "Fresh wood doesn't ignite that well."

"I am aware, but this is a relatively young forest, and the trees around here don't shed their branches often. However, since you're mainly going to be burning gel, using green wood wouldn't make much of a difference."

"...Gel?" Blake asks.

"Yes, the gelatinous material that slimes are made of." the Guide explains, "It's very flammable and it burns forever. You can make torches and campfires that last for years if you use the proper amount. It is also edible and can be used an an emergency ration in a pinch, though it's not that nutritious on its own. Surely you four weren't planning to make a campfire without it, were you?"

The four of you exchange glances.

"Please, if you need any more information, feel free to ask." he breaks the ensuing silence with a smile.

"So um... how do we get the gel from the slimes?" Ruby asks.

"Why, you kill them, of course."

Ruby's expression rapidly sinks into one of horror at his reply, "W-What!? But look how cute and squishy they are!" she gestures to a blue one hopping nearby.

"I mean, they are simple creatures, yes. But they can be dangerous in the right circumstances. Their bodies are full of powerful digestive enzymes, after all. Plus their predatory instincts take over when it gets dark."

"But--"

"Hey. We don't necessarily need this gel stuff, right?" you ask.

"Well no," Brian admits, "but it would definitely make your lives a lot easier, as it has several useful applications."

You briefly glance at your teammates, especially your sister, and seem to come to an unspoken consensus, "No offense, but I think we'll stick to what we know."

"Suit yourselves." he shrugs.

Eventually, you manage to scrounge together enough wood to get a fire going. Unfortunately, by that time the sun had already begun to set. At that point, the team decided to find some food for the evening. Eventually, Ruby managed to find some fruit, so you returned to camp and prepared for the night ahead.

Ruby volunteered to take the first watch, and Brian, who was now armed with a bow that you're sure he didn't have earlier, insisted that he stay up with her. With that decided, you slumped up against a nearby tree and began to drift off...

***
...

...

...

You snap awake to the sounds of pained moaning and gunfire.

Immediately springing to your feet, you ready Ember Celica ready to fight whatever is coming. Looking around, you see Ruby on top of a nearby rock with Crescent Rose deployed in a firing position. Glancing in the direction she's aiming, you are met with the sight of -- to your utter disbelief -- several grotesque, rotting bodies shambling towards your position.

Brian is off to the side, an arrow drawn and ready to fire at the nearest walking corpse. Which he does as soon as it is in range, embedding into the undead monster's head as it continues to press forward.

The sound of something landing next to you causes you to turn, only to realize it's Blake with Gambol Shroud at the ready. Judging from her expression, she, too, seems a bit weirded out by all of this.

"Uh, Blake... Are you--"

"Yes, I see them too..." she answers before you can finish.

"What in the world?!" You suddenly hear Weiss exclaim. Glancing over to where she was sleeping, you find her staring at the zombies with her mouth agape, her brain attempting to process what she was seeing before her.

"Guys! Guys!" Ruby shouts to all of you, "Brian wasn't lying! The dead really do walk the night here!" she fires off a shot at the enemies to punctuate.

"He wasn't..." Weiss continues to stare, before you decide to snap her out of it.

"We can talk about this later, right now, we should deal with these guys!" you say as you put of your fists. With a nod, Weiss quickly readies her weapon and joins the rest of the team as you fan out towards the growing horde.

"What's the plan, sis?" you ask.

"You and Blake take out the ones that get too close. Weiss, support."

"On it." you nod, before immediately looking for a target. Sure enough, a few of the zombies manage to get a bit too close to the camp, and you quickly rush forward and punch the lead one in the face. Immediately, its decomposing head flies straight off at the force of your blow, scattering bits of rotten blood and fleshy bits everywhere.

"Okay, that is gross..." you frown, before more of them close in. Blake, however, quickly delivers a slash with her weapon before expending a few rounds to dispatch them.

"They're behind us!" Weiss suddenly exclaims. Turning around, you see that, sure enough, there are a few zombies falling over the top of the cliff and quickly recovering after they hit the ground below. In response, she thrusts Myrtenaster forward as if to use a Dust attack, only for nothing to happen.

"...what?!" she looks at her weapon in alarm, examining the cylinder that stores its Dust vials, only to have to quickly back away when a zombie uses the severed arm of another as an improvised weapon to swipe at her.

[] Help Weiss and defend the rear. You trust Blake to hold the line here.
[] Tell Blake to help Weiss and keep defending this position.
[] Ruby most definitely heard her and will help her if needed. You and Blake should stay here and stick with the current plan.
[] Weiss can handle herself. Check on Brian, as he doesn't seem like much of a fighter despite the bow.

Y'know I really wish I'd found this story when it'll have lots of chapters to read, cause it seems entertaining, but reeeeeeally slow.

If nothing else, you seem to have decent writing, despite the bland and generic character dialogue.

//Is there? I haven't seen him carrying it, and checking the wiki it doesn't seem like he has anything like that in his inventory (though it could also be that they haven't fully updated that page yet.)
It's called the Pretty Pink set: Pretty Pink Dress, Pretty Pink Stockings, and Pretty Pink Ribbon. It will probably be added to his page at some point. Checking it now, I see there's also the Star Princess set based on Rosalina.

Blake has the speed to move around the zombies if I do recall right so this seems to be the best option.

//Yeah, I know I suck at writing. lol. Ideally it will improve over time... hopefully...

As far as I know, to write good dialogue you must first see good dialogue.
Whether it's from reading good books/stories or observing great characters from any type of media, you gotta experience what it feels to read good dialogue, to know that what you're reading draws your interest, and then identify why it makes you interested so that you may extract the component parts to create your own.

If you want an example of great dialogue, I'd recommend reading The Games We Play if you still haven't, it's the best RWBY story out there and it's filled to the brim with amazing dialogue, genuinely good and instrospective inner monologue, as well as character interaction and banter the likes of which I've rarely ever seen anywhere else.

Other examples of great dialogue and character interaction (whether be it realistic, intriguing, emotional or comedic) in RWBY stories are Red Thorn, Requiem of Remnant, Relic of the Future, Overlord, Remnant's Reclaimer and The Fist of Remnant. You can find most of these stories on ff.net I believe, and a few on Spacebattles.

//Believe it or not I actually was following along with Relic of the Future for a while (I've read a few other of Coeur's stories as well, they're pretty good). I still need to catch up on it, though...

[X] Help Weiss and defend the rear. You trust Blake to hold the line here.
===================
"I got this." you say, before propelling yourself towards Weiss's aggressor as soon as Blake nods in acknowledgement.

You slam your fist into the arm-wielding zombie attacking Weiss, propelling it straight into the cliff face where it holds together about as well as you an expect a rotting corpse would... which would be not at all.

"It looked like you're a bit short handed back here, Weiss. That guy looked armed and dangerous." you give Weiss a smirk.

"Really, Yang?" she frowns as more of the living dead approach.

"What? I have to lighten the mood somehow." you ready your fists as you practically feel Weiss's eye roll.

The next feel minutes feel like a blur as you and Weiss dispatch the zombies that close in on your position. As their number diminishes, you glance about, noticing that Blake and Ruby are holding their own. However, Brian seems to be in a bit of trouble, retreating as several enemies approach him while firing his bow in an attempt to thin their ranks.

"Think you can manage what's left?" you ask Weiss.

"Of course I can." she scoffs.

"Right. I'm going to help Brian, then." you inform her, before using Ember Celica to propel yourself towards the guide, delivering a well placed punch to the cluster of zombies, obliterating one and causing the others to scatter from the resulting knockback.

Before you can do anything else, you suddenly hear a strange noise coming from the sky. Glancing up, you notice a point of light heading straight for your position, rapidly getting brighter.

"Move!" you yell, before jumping out of the way. Brian backs off a few steps as well, just in time for a streak of light to hit one of the zombies as it recovers, causing it to explode into a mess of gore.

Shining in its place is a strange, yellow, star-shaped stone that seems to glow with a bright aura. Before you can wonder anything about it, however, a low moan draws your attention to the remaining zombies, who are once again coming straight at you. Acting quickly, you make short work of them, before looking to see how the others are doing and noting that they, too, are mopping up the last few on their end.

As silence descends over the campsite once more, you put down your fists once you're sure there's nothing else approaching and turn to look at the Guide.

"So, I don't suppose you're more inclined to believe me now, are you?" he speaks up.

"Well, considering you were right about the undead, and that a lot of other things you've said add up, I would say yes..." Blake replies, Gambol Shroud hanging at her side in sword form, ready to use at a moment's notice should more zombies arrive.

"Yeah, I think it's pretty clear you were serious about what you were saying..." you agree, before turning to the resident Ice Queen, "So, Weiss. Anything you've gotta say?"

"Hmm?" she glances, up from inspecting Myrtenaster, "Oh... Well, yes, I suppose there's reason to believe you aren't nearly as insane as I thought you were..."

"Oh, come on, Weiss-cream. You still think he might be crazy after what we just saw?"

"Well, not entirely... Look, that isn't important at the moment." she frowns, "Do any of you happen to have any Dust rounds on you?"

"Oh, I have a clip of Gravity rounds!" Ruby pulls a magazine out of her pocket.

"Let me see that." Weiss holds out a hand to Ruby, who passes the clip over to her. Within moments she ejects a round from the magazine and examines the tip carefully, "...That shouldn't be possible..." she notes, before checking the next round.

"What's wrong, Weiss?" Ruby questions.

She hands the ammunition back to her, "The Dust in them has gone inert somehow. The vials in my weapon are completely inert as well."

"What!?" you exclaim, "How is that possible?"

"That's what I'm wondering! Dust doesn't just go inert for no reason."

"Do you think that portal we fell through did something to it?" Blake suggests.

"Hmm... Yes, that's the most plausible option I can think of so far... Otherwise, well..."

"Well what?" you quirk an eyebrow.

Weiss sighs, "...It would imply that we are no longer on Remnant."

"What?!" Ruby squeaks, "What do you mean?"

"...Think about it. One of the more infamous cases of Dust spontaneously going inert is when it leaves Remnant's atmosphere. It's the reason why we've never been able to get anything into space. Considering that, and the more... unusual things we've seen here..."

"...Then it's definitely a possibility..." Blake finishes, frowning in thought.

"So I'm willing to hope that it was merely an effect of that strange portal and not... the alternative..."

"Excuse me for butting in, but I have to ask." Brian speaks up after a moment, "What is this Dust you keep referring to?"

You all level a long stare at him.

"...What?" he blinks.

[X] Explain Dust to him.

Hey, he did ask and it would only be polite- especially after admitting they all thought he was crazy before.

[X] Explain Dust to him.
============================

"Dust is... well..." you hesitate for a moment, a bit weirded out that somebody his age doesn't know what Dust is, "Dust is energy. The entire world practically runs on it."

"Simplified explanations aside," Weiss picks up where you leave off, "what Yang said is correct. It's a naturally occurring volatile energy propellant that's reactive with aura. Individual crystals can have properties such as fire, water, and lightning, among other things. As you can likely understand, these properties allow Dust to serve a wide range of practical purposes in both combat and technology. ...Does this sound familiar to you at all?"

"Hmm..." Brian thinks, "Unfortunately, no. I don't believe I've heard of a compound like that occurring on Terraria..."

Weiss sighs, "Should've figured..."

"Terraria?" Blake questions.

"Terraria is the name of the world. Or, at least, that's what I'd assume most people would call it." the Guide clarifies, "Though, given the situation you seem to be in I suppose it's only natural that you wouldn't know..."

"So it's true then..." Ruby frowns, "A-Are we really not on Remnant anymore?"

"Well... based on current evidence, it's... not unlikely..." Weiss glances away.

"Hey," you walk over to your sister to offer some words of comfort, "Even if we are, then we just need to find a way back, right?"

"What if we can't, though?" She stares up at you "Our friends are probably worried sick about us! What if we never get to see them again!? Oh god, what about Dad!? What about Uncle Qrow!?"

"Hey, calm down..." you try to reassure, "I'm sure things won't get that bad..." 'Hopefully' is what you don't say, "If something could bring us here then surely something can put us back, right?"

"You're right." Ruby composes herself a bit, "It's not like that hole opened for no reason... Oh! Do you think Brian knows anything about it?"

"Probably not..." you frown, "I mean, he seems to know things, but I doubt he knows everything..."

"You're correct, I don't know absolutely everything." he suddenly speaks up, drawing the team's attention to him once more, "However, I do recall fragments of an ancient prophecy stating that the world will reach out for assistance as it nears its end. It's entirely possible that you're here because Terraria itself willed it."

You all once again stare at him for a moment.

"A prophecy... Really?" Weiss says exasperatedly.

"While I am aware that they can be wrong at times, please believe me when I say that my order is certain that with this one it certainly isn't the case."

"Uh huh..." you nod, "So if this 'Terraria' world willed us here, is there any way to make it 'unwill' us?"

"Unfortunately such an answer would be beyond the scope of my knowledge. While us Guides know much about this world and its history, it was the Dryads who were able to truly connect to the planet, in fact, it was once said that they themselves were the physical manifestations of the world's voice and will."

"Oh, perfect! Then we just need to find one of these Dryad people and ask them to tell the planet to send us home!"

"I don't think it would be that simple..." Blake comments.

"You are correct." Brian nods, "Most of the Dryads died out in a great war long ago. Only one is said to remain, and, like my order, she is said to be waiting for the heroes spoken of in the prophecy to arrive." he smiles, "Luckily for you, I have reason to believe that you four are the heroes in question."

"Really?" Ruby questions, "What makes you say that?"

"The prophecy spoke of the world reaching out for assistance, but it also stated that in this action it will summon forth four warriors to save it. Considering what I've seen and heard from you four so far, you would certainly fit the description."

"Save it? Save it from what?"

"Well we assume it's The Corruption. It's a cancer-like blight that spreads across the land, tainting everything it touches. If it gets too out of control it could very well wipe out all life on the planet." he frowns, "Fortunately, however, its spread slowed dramatically after the Great War of Cthulhu, likely due to the fact that the outcome of the war affected the balance of the world in many ways, for better or worse. Despite that, it remains an ever-present threat."

"I see..." Ruby looks down in thought.

"So, if we're these so-called heroes, then this Dryad person's going to be looking for us, right?" you ask.

"True. In fact, her connection to the world means she's probably aware of you four already." Brian nods, "But she probably won't approach you directly unless you prove yourselves to be the ones we're truly waiting for."

"What would we have to do for that?" Blake raises an eyebrow.

"Slaying one of the strong monsters that plague this world should be enough. The Eye of Cthulhu would make an ideal target, it's not too weak, but it shouldn't be too strong either, plus its absence would be doing the world a favor."

"And what -- dare I ask -- is The Eye of Cthulhu?" Weiss speaks up.

"Exactly what it sounds like. It's a floating eye -- about the size of a house -- ripped from a celestial abomination ages ago, it stalks the night in a vain attempt to find its host body and exact its revenge on the inhabitants of this world. It also serves as the master and progenitor of all Demon Eyes in existence."

"Huh." you say, "Good to know, I guess..."

"So where do we find this Eye of... Cuth... kah... cafu..." Ruby struggles a bit with the pronunciation, "...uh ...The eye thing?"

"Well, if it something catches its attention it's more likely to find you, to be honest." the Guide answers, "There are ways to challenge it directly, though, but I believe such a conversation is best saved until morning. We could be attacked by more monsters at any moment, after all."

"Right..." your sister reloads her weapon, glancing about.
