The will of a dying world full of Corruption reaches out to another world that, like itself, is a remnant of what it once was. In doing so, it pulls from the other world a group of four warriors in a last bid attempt to save itself from destruction and restore the balance it once possessed. Hijinks ensue.

//Been playing a lot of Terraria recently, plus I found out that the game has official lore now, so I decided I might as well try one of these again.

//For the sake of advancing faster and my sanity I'll only have a crossover with one world this time. I do plan to finish the other Terraria quest eventually, but with the lore changes and the difficulty of some of the characters to write I'll keep it on the backburner for now.

//Also for those wondering about Remnants of a Void, I'll probably resume updates for that on Friday

//Anyway, without further ado, let's get into it:
---------------------------------------

Terraria is dying.

A vile corruption spawned from the sins of the masses and the imbalance within life itself spreads like a cancer across the land, with the end goal of wiping out everything on the planet. The various defense mechanisms employed by the world itself has only slowed the blight's advance, with an aging core at its center being the only driving force keeping things from getting worse. One race with close ties to the planet, the dryads, once sought to find a way to heal the world, and seemed to be onto something before the fated day of Cthulhu's arrival.

The eldritch horror appeared from the stars without warning, and marked the downfall of the dryads' civilization. A great war against the terror ensued, causing much history and knowledge to be lost in the crossfire. During this period, which would become known as the Great War of Cthulhu, the dryads discovered a prophecy foretelling of the restoration of balance to Terraria by a group of four, but nothing specific about these four could be discerned. With the pressure of the current crisis, they were unable to decipher any further information from this prophecy, and, eventually, as their race and civilization lay decimated and dying in the wake of Cthulhu's defeat, they gradually began to dismiss the premonition as a false hope and began to lament that no great saviors would come to restore the world's balance.

One individual, however, clung to this hope, and now, as one of, if not, the last of her kind alive, she was almost certain she wasn't mistaken in doing so. In the past few months, the veils of reality have begun to blur: No doubt a last ditch, desperate attempt by Terraria in a bid to preserve itself and the life on it. The first time it reached out to another world, it attracted the attention of an old army that the lone dryad had managed to help push away from the world. Today, it has managed to touch a second: An ailing world much like itself, a remnant of what once was that was now swarming with darkness…

Without hesitation, the will of the world reached out to a group of four individuals from this other reality, and gently pulled them into its embrace. In that instant, an ancient prophecy was finally set into motion, and not a moment to soon, as mysterious figures stirring in the shadows of the world had begun enacting a plan of their own...

Who are these fated four individuals chosen by the planet? (Select the initial player character.)

[] Mediumcore - You only start with three retries before permadeath and they are shared across all characters. Deaths outside of combat don't get do-overs. You must proceed without dead characters, but you can vote to reset to an earlier point if you get a bad end or all four characters die.

[] Hardcore - No retries. No resets. Deaths and bad endings are permanent.

Character Sheets and Mechanics
Rules and Mechanics

Welcome to Of Aura and Corruption, a Terraria x RWBY quest.

In this quest you play as four Huntsman/Huntresses in training from Remnant, be them from Team RWBY, JNPR, or a mix of both thrust into the world of Terraria for an epic adventure. You have control over one of them per game day, always getting an opportunity to switch at the end of the day. There will be other opportunities to switch as well, but these will be presented as votes only when the option is available. The characters are from between volumes 2 and 3 in the RWBY timeline.

The ultimate goal, ideally, is to defeat an entity known as the Moon Lord, saving the world in the process and opening a way for the characters to return to Remnant. Death is possible, though how the quest handles it depends on the initial vote.

General combat success is determined by modified d100 rolls. Modifiers can be gained by a character as the quest progresses depending on their equipment, actions, and events experienced. Complex fights like bosses or events will offer choices of strategies and moves to take, and will often span several posts.

Omakes are welcomed and encouraged. Omakes that are accepted as canon are subject to rewards, which include, but are not limited to, roll modifiers, extra retries, or free upgrades.

For those terraria players who are wondering, the world in this quest is Expert Mode with Corruption as the world evil. No mods are involved.

These update at the end of every ingame day, or combat. A more frequently updated version of a character's status sheet will be shown during combat situations for convenience.

------------------------

You are Yang Xiao-Long: Awesome big sister, and maker of many puns.

Your day today had been going pretty normal up until now. You were with the rest of your team, Team RWBY, led by your younger half-sister, Ruby Rose, and practicing for the upcoming Vytal Festival tournament when all of a sudden a mysterious hole in space tore itself open near Ruby. Your big sister instincts leapt into action immediately as you attempted to save Ruby from being pulled in. Unfortunately, the suction from the hole was a bit stronger than you expected, and you ended up getting pulled in along with her.

As you were drawn inside, your partner, Blake Belladonna, managed to wrap the ribbon of her weapon around your waist as you clasped Ruby's hand. Unfortunately, even this wasn't enough, as the spatial tear simply pulled Blake -- along with the last member of your team, Weiss Schnee, who was helping her attempt to pull you back -- along for the ride. You blacked out not long after.

When you regain your senses, you find yourself laying flat on your back on a patch of grass. Quickly springing to your feet, ignoring the soreness from what you assume was a fall, you look around for any sign of Ruby. To your utter relief, you find her lying on the ground nearby. A little further from her is Weiss, who seems to have landed headfirst in a bush, as well as Blake, who, like you, seems to be recovering from the impact. You notice that the ribbon from Gambol Shroud is still wrapped around your waist, but you have other matters to attend to at the moment.

"Ruby!" you exclaim as you kneel down and nudge your sister, "Ruby, wake up!"

"Ugh..." she stirrs as she opens her eyes, "What just happened?"

"I have no idea! We all got pulled into that strange hole and now we're in a forest somewhere!" you say, "Are you alright?"

"Yeah, just a little bruised I think." Ruby replies as she picks herself up, "Where are the others?"

"We're over here." Blake answers as she helps Weiss out of the bush, "Any idea where we are?"

"Let's see..." Ruby looks at her scroll, "...Darn. I'm not getting a signal."

You quickly untangle Gambol Shroud from yourself before checking your scroll as well, noting that, sure enough, you're not getting any reception, "Same here. Guess wherever we are it's far away from the CCT network..."

"Great. So we're in the middle of nowhere." Weiss frowns, "Well, we're definitely in some kind of temperate forest, so at best we're somewhere on Sanus or Anima. Though it's highly unlikely we ended up in a CCT dead zone, the network and its relay towers have quite a large radius."

"In that case, we just need to keep walking until we get a scroll signal then, right?" Ruby asks, "Or until we see a settlement."

"In theory, yes. Though I'm a bit concerned as to why we're here." Weiss glances about, "A strange portal just happened to open up near us and dump us into the middle of the wilderness. I honestly don't know what's going on, but we should be careful."

"Weiss is right." Blake nods, "Whatever made that portal could be nearby for all we know."

"Then we move carefully then." Ruby agrees, "So... Which way should we start walking?"

It's at this point that you notice something jump out of the bushes on the other side of the forest clearing. You blink for a moment as you mentally process what kind of creature you're looking at: It seems to be a green blob of some kind, just passively hopping along. None of the others seem to have noticed it yet.

"I think we should head to a high vantage point to get our bearings or spot a landmark or two." Blake speaks as you continue to watch the blob, "That way we can get an idea of the direction we should be heading."

"Uh, guys..." you say as the blob hops closer.

"So should we climb a tree or look for a cliff?" Ruby questions, "Oh! Maybe we can--"

"Ruby, we are not looking for a giant Nevermore." Weiss frowns.

"Guys..." you speak a little louder.

"Aw, come on, Weiss. I promise it'll go better than last time!"

"You left me last time!"

"That was a long time ago! Besides, I told you to jump!"

"GUYS!" you shout, getting everyone's attention.

After a couple of seconds of silence you point at the approaching blob, "What is that?"

Your teammates stare at the blob for several moments, before Ruby suddenly speeds forward to get a closer look.

"Oh my god, it's adorable!" she squees.

"Ruby, get away from that!" Weiss exclaims, "It could be dangerous for all we know."

"Actually, it looks like it's just ignoring her..." Blake notes, "What even is that, anyway?"

"No idea, I was asking you." you say as you approach it. The blob doesn't seem to react to your presence at all.

//This actually ended up a bit longer than I was expecting.

[x] Ignore it. Come up with a plan of action with the rest of the team before any Grimm show up.
-----------------------------------
While you do have an urge to poke this weird slime thing with a stick there are more pressing matters to attend to, so after a few moments of observing it hop along, you turn back to your teammates.

"Right..." you say, "Anyway, I think we should figure out where on Remnant we are... You guys said something about climbing?"

***
After a few minutes of discussion, the team decides that their best vantage point would be a nearby hill a short hike away. Therefore, you now find yourselves trekking through the forest with Ruby taking point while Blake brings up the rear. As you walk, you keep an eye out for any Grimm that might want to get the jump on you, but surprisingly enough you haven't seen a single one yet. Not even a lone beowolf.

You do, however, see another one of those blob things. This one is slightly bigger and colored blue, and, much like the first one, seems rather indifferent to your team's presence as it absentmindedly hops forward.

"Seriously, what are these things?" you question, "Are they some kind of new animal?"

"It's plausible." Weiss answers, "Considering that Grimm tend to leave animals alone outside of territorial disputes, there could be many undiscovered species out there in the particularly Grimm infested areas of the world. Though if that's indeed the case with these... things... then that raises even more questions as to where on Remnant we ended up."

"Speaking of Grimm, don't you find it weird that we haven't seen a single one yet?"

"Yes, I did find that odd. I figured we would've seen at least a beowolf by now..."

"Maybe someone cleared them out?" Ruby suggests.

"Maybe, but that begs the question of who did it." Weiss frowns.

"By the way, are any of you getting a signal yet?"

You quickly check your scroll, "Nope." you say, popping the 'p'.

"Unfortunately, I'm not getting one yet either." Weiss replies.

"Same." Blake adds.

With a light sigh, you stretch a bit, idly glancing through the treeline. It's at this moment that something catches your eye: Through the tree trunks you spot a clearing, at the center of which appears to be a brown haired young man in a beige shirt and blue pants just standing there. You stop in your tracks and rub your eyes. Sure enough, the person still appears to be there.

"Yang?" Blake questions as the rest of the team stops to look at you, "Is something wrong?"

"Is it just me, or is there someone over there?" you answer point at the person in the clearing.

"...That's definitely a person." Weiss confirms.

"Come on, maybe he knows where we are!" Ruby exclaims, before speeding off into the clearing.

"Ruby! Wait up!" you exclaim as you run after her.

"Hey! Excuse me!" Ruby shouts as she gets closer, drawing the man's attention, "We're a bit lost, can you tell us where we are?"

"Certainly." the man nods as the rest of you catch up, "You're on an island in the middle of the ocean... Though some people would refer to it as a continent. It really depends on your interpretation."

The group falls silent at his unhelpful answer.

"O-kay... " you speak up, "Do you know what continent or island this is...?"

"As far as I know it never received a proper name. I'm sure it had one at one point, but it was likely lost to history." he shrugs.

Silence overtakes the group once more, before Weiss clears her throat. "Excuse me, Mr..."

"You can call me Brian. Or you can refer to me by my title: Guide. Either of those work."

"...Mr. Brian--"

"Oh, please. Just Brian. I insist."

"--Right. Anyway, I believe what our leader wanted to know is where the closest kingdom or settlement is in relation to us. Would you happen to know?"

"Kingdoms?" Brian gives her a bemused look, "Well, there was the Lihzahrd empire that used to inhabit the jungle on the western side of this continent, though most of them are savages these days and seclude themselves in their temple. Aside from that, there's an old dungeon on the eastern side of the continent, but that's been long abandoned."

"...Does the kingdom of Vale ring any bells?" Blake asks.

"I don't believe there has been a kingdom with such a name in the history of Terraria. Why?"

Once again, a silence falls over everyone.

"Could you excuse us for one moment?" Ruby asks, to which he nods in reply.

In an instant the entire team forms a huddle.

"Okay, this man is obviously insane." Weiss says immediately.

"While I wouldn't put it as harshly, I kind of agree." Blake nods.

"I mean, he seems nice though, right...?" Ruby asks, "Oh! Maybe he has a village nearby? If he does we could ask someone there if they know where we are."

"It wouldn't hurt to ask." you shrug.

"That's assuming he doesn't point us in a random direction." Weiss frowns.

"We could still try."

"Insane or not, if it does work we'd at least have something to go off of." Blake adds.

"It's settled then." Ruby nods, "Team meeting adjourned!"

The team breaks the huddle and turns back to Brian -- Which you personally note is a weird name, considering it doesn't follow the color rule -- who cocks an eyebrow.

"Sorry about that." Ruby fidgets, "So do you live around here? We're trying to get back in contact with civilization, so if you could take us to your village or settlement that would help us a lot."

Brian shakes his head, "Sorry, but I don't live anywhere around here. This continent is mostly uninhabited, after all. I actually traveled from far away to meet someone here." he examines the four of you curiously, "Now that I think about it, I believe it might be you four that I was destined to meet. You clearly aren't from around here, after all."

"You can say that again..." You roll your eyes.

"Okay, where did you travel from?" Weiss questions, "Surely you could take us there, right?"

"As I said, far away, as in a few months trip across the ocean as well as couple days of walking to get to the center of this continent." says Brian

"I honestly find that hard to believe. If it took that long then you'd have to fend off who knows how many Grimm, and, no offense, you don't look like a huntsman."

"...Grimm?" he asks.

You all exchange glances, before staring at Brian incredulously. He hasn't heard of Grimm and yet he's standing in the middle of the wilderness!? Either he's trolling all of you or something isn't right with him.

"...What? Do I have something on my face?"

"You really expect the four of us to believe that you haven't heard of Grimm." Weiss speaks up after a moment.

"I haven't heard of such an entity, though." Brian shrugs, "Unless that's your term for Slimes, though the kinds you find on the surface are harmless unless you touch or provoke them..."

"No, Grimm aren't slimes..." Blake frowns, "In fact, we haven't even seen slime creatures until today."

"Ah, I see... Perhaps Grimm refer to Eaters, then? You know, the flying, many-eyed swarms of The Corruption?"

"I don't think whatever those are are Grimm either..." you blink.

"Ah, well I'm sure I'll understand what that is eventually... Collecting and preserving knowledge is one of the two principles of my order, after all."

"Your order?" Blake asks.

"Yes. The Order of the Guide. An organization dedicated to the preservation of knowledge and using said knowledge to guide others." he smiles, "In fact, I have the feeling that you four may be in need of guidance. You indeed seem quite lost, as you've said. But don't worry, if anyone can tell you how to survive in this land, it would be me."

"That doesn't inspire much confidence..." Weiss mutters.

"Weiss!" Ruby hisses.

"What? Like I said, he's obviously insane!" she whispers back.

"Well uh, thanks for the offer, but I think with how things are going that we're going to keep looking for civilization on our own..." you say as Ruby and Weiss break off from the group to continue their argument.

"You won't find much, believe me. It would be better just to build a settlement yourself." Brian advises, before sighing, "Well, if you four won't accept my guidance, then at least let me leave you with a warning: I highly suggest building a shelter before nightfall. It's dangerous to be out at night."

"We'll keep that in mind..." says Blake.

"Oh, and take this as well." Brian states as he pulls a bag out from behind a nearby rock and handing it to you, "It will help you on your journey."

"Uh... thank you?" you say as the bag is shoved into your grip. It feels somewhat heavy in your hands.

"Sorry about that..." Ruby says as she and Weiss return, "What's with the bag?"

"Consider it a gift." Brian answers, "Anyway, if you're leaving I'll be right here if you need me. Do take my advice to heart, though."

"Yeah..." you say.

"Well, let's keep going..." Ruby starts walking away, "Thanks for the help, Brian."

"No problem!" he replies as the rest of you follow.

***
"So what did he give us?" Ruby asks as she glances at the bag.

"Probably junk that his delusional brain felt would be useful." Weiss snarks.

You turn the bag over and jump back in surprise as an axe, a pickaxe, and a sword clatter to the ground. Curiously, it seems that they're all made of copper.

"...Or it could be tools and weapons..." the Schnee heiress blinks, "It's not like we actually need them, though."

"The sword could be a good fallback weapon if one of us gets disarmed, I suppose." says Blake as Ruby begins to examine it with interest.

"Not really." Ruby grimaces, "The construction is somewhat crude and the edge isn't even that sharp. Plus it's made of copper, which isn't very sturdy and likely to bend... The poor little thing wouldn't be of much help..." she frowns, before perking up a bit, "But what if... we could make it better!"

"I highly doubt we'd have access to that kind of equipment out here, Ruby..." Weiss shakes her head.

"We don't really need the tools either." You say, "If we wanted a tree cut down or a rock broken I could just punch it."

"Should we just leave them here, then?" Blake asks.

"I dunno. What do you think, sis?"

"I mean, they were a gift..." she says as she slips the copper sword into her belt, "Let's just hold on to them for now."

"Alright." you shrug, before taking the pickaxe and axe under one arm and continuing along.

***

You eventually reach the top of the hill, passing a few more of those weird slime creatures along the way. Unfortunately, you find no familiar landmarks nor signs of a town or city in the area. You do, however, see a large desert off in the distance.

"Hmm... We could be in Vacuo." Weiss surmises, "Though the utter lack of Grimm so far doesn't really instill much confidence in my guess... Do you see anything, Ruby?"

Ruby looks up from Crescent Rose's scope, and shakes her head, "No... Just sand, grass, and trees. Not even a town..."

"Blake?"

Your faunus teammate, currently perched in a nearby tree, looks down and shakes her head.

"Great..."

"So now what?" you ask.

"We could keep walking?" Ruby suggests, "Or maybe we could turn back and find that Brian guy..."

"You want to go back to him?" Weiss questions, "Even after he proved himself to be crazy?"

"I mean, even if he is crazy, he at least looked like he knew what he was doing... Plus we haven't seen a single Grimm yet and a whole lot of those cute blob things... Maybe he's, I don't know... actually more sane than we think?"

"Ruby does have a point..." Blake frowns, "It does seem really weird that we still haven't seen a single Grimm out here, plus there's absolutely no sign of civilization..."

"There could still be a perfectly logical explanation for all of this." Weiss frowns, "Yang, back me up on this. It would be better if we kept looking, right?"

[] Weiss has a point. You could just be having bad luck right now and with a bit more walking you might be able to find civilization.

//From a deep slumber, I awaken.

//Honestly, I really do apologize for how quickly this quest sorta died. Got a bit of writer's block back in November, plus chaos involving my new job made me sort of forget about this quest for a while. 😅

//However, the fact that Terraria recently got updated made me reminisce about my old attempts to do a Terraria quest, and has spurred me to attempt to resuscitate this thing, since I still really enjoy the concept of this quest. That, and I have a bad habit of having several quests on hiatus on this site anyway and really should start updating them again. So I figured why not start with something that only just begun and was an utter shame to have died so quickly?

//I'll probably try to start up one of my "long runners" next. Most likely Remnants of a Void since it really has been on pause for far too long and I'm sure that some of you who were invested in it would really like to see Violet's silly little story continue. No ideas when yet, but probably once I feel this one is running smoothly again. Definitely shooting for within a month though.

//Anyway, I again apologize for the long absence, and hopefully we can get things rolling again. For those who invested in this quest and were waiting all this time, I thank you for your patience, and for those who are just now stumbling upon this, feel free to hop in, because I'm pretty sure the half year hiatus killed whatever player base this once had lol.

//That being said, without further ado, let's get this ball rolling again.

[x] Support your sister. Maybe that Brian guy isn't as crazy as you thought?
---------------------------------

"Well to be fair he's literally the only guy we've seen out here so far." you say, "We could at least give him a chance, I guess."

"I don't believe this." Weiss shakes her head, "You do realize there's a chance he might not even be in the same place we found him before, right?"

"He did say he would be right there if we needed him, though." Ruby frowns, before giving Weiss a pleading look, "Come on, Weiss, can't we just try it?"

The Schnee Heiress stares for a moment, before relenting with a sigh, "Fine. But don't say I told you so if this turns out to be a complete waste of time..."

"Sure, whatever you say, Ice Queen..." you say in response, prompting Weiss to roll her eyes at the use of that nickname.

"Alright team, we have our objective, so let's move out!" Ruby cheers, before heading off down the hill.

"That's the wrong way." Weiss points out.

Your sister abruptly stops, and immediately turns around with a slight blush, "I-I knew that!" she smiles sheepishly, "...Let's move out... This way!" she points, before leading you all in the proper direction. You simply shake your head and follow with a smile.

***
As you descend, you pass several more of those odd slime creatures, which, as before, are simply content to ignore the group. Eventually, you return to the clearing where you met the strange man, and, sure enough, he's still there, waiting.

"So you came back." Brian speaks as the team approaches, "Is there something you needed?"

"Well, after looking around, we sorta though that maaaaaybe you might not be as crazy as we thought you were..." Ruby fidgets, "N-Not to say we actually thought you were crazy or anything like that!"

"Don't worry about it." he chuckles, "I suppose judging from how you reacted to me earlier I suppose I must have indeed looked crazy to you. Anyway, I suppose you four are ready to receive my guidance now?"

"Not necessarily." Blake speaks up, "But you do seem to know what you're doing out here, plus what we've seen so far seems to support some of what you said."

"I see... Well regardless, of your reason for returning, I still highly suggest you begin constructing a shelter immediately. Preferably one with a door. As I said before, Terraria is not a safe place to be out in the open in at night."

"Why's that?" you ask, "You claimed there's no Grimm around here, plus we haven't seen a single one since coming here either."

"Well, there are the legions of undead that roam the surface at night, for one." Brian explains, "And that's not even getting into the demonic eyeballs that fly through the sky."

"You do realize how preposterous that sounds, right?" Weiss scowls, prompting Ruby to give her a look, "Just because we decided to come back, and that some of your claims might be... plausible... that doesn't mean we completely believe you."

"I see... Well if you wish to take the chance of spending the night out in the open, I won't stop you. In fact, I'll support you the best I can, though I still heavily advise against doing so."

Ruby seems to think for a moment, "Could you excuse us for a second?"

"Go ahead." Brian nods.

"Thanks." She smiles, before pulling the team into another huddle, "So, what do you think? I mean, we've taken on lots of Grimm before, so we could probably deal with whatever the night throws at us as a team, but then again, as crazy as he might sound, I don't think Brian has any reason to outright lie to us either. I think we should at least consider building a shelter of some kind."

"Presence of threats or not, a simple shelter would be useful." Blake notes, "Though it would be more cost efficient to simply make a campfire and sleep around that. Having one of us on watch just in case something threatening does show up."

"Look, the claims that there are no Grimm around here I find plausible at best, to say that the living dead walk the surface at night is in the realm of complete fiction." Weiss frowns, "I don't think a shelter would be necessary anyway. Besides, I doubt anything we'd build will be structurally stable."

"We built the bunk beds in our room." Ruby argues.

"And we were lucky in that case. To this day I still don't understand how they're so stable."

"It's because we built them with the power of teamwork, of course. Duh."

"Dolt..." Weiss shakes her head, "Anyway we're getting off topic. What do you think about all of this, Yang?"

[] He might be a bit crazy, but suggest that you at least try to build a shelter anyway. Besides, what if it suddenly rains overnight?
[] Agree with Weiss that a shelter isn't necessary and suggest that you should chance it with a simple campfire.
[] Say that you don't care either way. It's ultimately Ruby's call.

At least they will learn what the nights in these new lands are like.

Welcome back.

//I'll probably try to start up one of my "long runners" next. Most likely Remnants of a Void since it really has been on pause for far too long and I'm sure that some of you who were invested in it would really like to see Violet's silly little story continue.
Yay! Who's an adorable reincarnation of a omniversal god of destruction~? (Yes, Kirby, but also Violet.)

That sounds like fun.

Side note: with regards to the other Terraria crossover you tried, 1.4 actually has a Madoka costume in the game. I somehow managed to pick it up the very first time I went to the Traveling Merchant.
