No, SV, You Are the Forest! (Riot Quest)

Someone got a unique upgrade path for their tree by spendung their actions on what they thought was interesting rather than what might have been optimal early on, so you might get a unique upgrade out of it. And specialization is the name of the game, so feel free to go for it.

Can people go for the Eldest Tree upgrade route? I kind of got the impression that it was a one off thing, though I could be wrong.
I think it's just unlocked by doing actions across most categories

Turn 09
No SV You Are the Forest
A Riot Quest
Turn 09

Everything was calm. The Forest had reached a new level of growth, more Predators had laired within it, yes, the new Cycle seemed to be off to a good start.

Then, shortly after the magnetic fields around the wormhole fluctuated, a heaving barrage of energy fire slammed into the Forest's shields, erected on the off-chance that something happened.

Magnetic fluxes indicated a significant level of damage to the other Ingaba facilities in the system, including those dedicated to the deconstruction of the Precursor Mobile Shipyard and the shipyard itself.

Military ships are in better shape, as they were designed to withstand such, but the smaller ships kept near the Wormhole are gutted or destroyed, the tiny, infinitesimal signals of life-pods glittering weakly in the void.

If the Forest had shoulders, it would shrug. There isn't anything the Forest can do for them, so it won't concern itself with them any longer.

Of course, it's only after that that the Forest detects the fluctuations that indicate powerful active drives. Tiny, but strong, and accelerating towards the Forest and everything else within reach.

What are those? Well, whatever they are, they can't be good for the Forest. Not coming right after the wave of energy weapons like those used on the Forest in the past.

At least asking this question wouldn't take time or effort.

*-*-*-*

Senior Scientist Oragles was awoken in the middle of his primary sleep-cycle by his assistant banging on his locked door. He could hear her saying something, but it was slurred by fear and haste – he couldn't quite make it out through the blur of sleep.

"The system is what?" He asked, far more calmly than he probably should be, but he'd been in system when a Void Dragon Whelp came through. This didn't really register, not compared to what could have been.

"Energy weapons discharge was detected striking the Forest's shield, Senior Scientist!" Namone answered through the door, her agitation easy to hear. "Estimated point of origin is the Wormhole. Drive wakes have been detected; they're tiny but powerful, and are expected to hit a high fraction of c on their way in. Hundreds of them."

"Have the psychics inform the Forest immediately; don't wait on them to ask." Oragles said, stretching and blinking. "Get me a stimulant – long lasting, please; this won't end soon."

"Of course, Senior Scientist," his normally ebullient assistant replied.

"The Forest's reactions are going to be priceless," he mused, tail languidly waving in the cool air of the research station. "There are a number of trees whose functions we simply do not understand, and this will allow us to better grasp the Forest's abilities, making them both better allies and worse enemies, no matter how it plays out."

By the time Oragles was fully dressed and in the command nexus of the research station, the situation was clear.

And it was a bad one.

Local fleet elements were crippled. Largely comprised of smaller ship classes, they were present to fend off raiders and pirates, with the bigger ships the stick used to cover the Ingaba's hyperlane and protect the work done on removing the Precursor Mobile Shipyard.

The bigger ships were mostly fine, the energy barrage merely damaging them and not crippling them. The smaller ships were ruined wrecks.

There was nothing Oragles could do for them, not with the missiles bearing down on the Forest, the still mobile capital ships, and what remained of the shipyard. At least the capital ships had good point defense.

"If they could do this, why didn't they send a fleet through immediately?" Oragles pondered. "It must have something to do with the nature of their ftl travel. If the only way they can traverse the galaxy easily is with wormholes, then by necessity strategy and tactics must center around protecting and assaulting them.

"But why not simply shove a fleet through?"

"Scouting?" the ensign assigned to sensors asked. "If they're expecting heavy defenses, automated drones and missile pods that can traverse a wormhole would be a good way to see what's on the other side and get something to report back."

"So you're thinking their fleet isn't in position yet?"

"Yes, sir!"

"Good. When you get off-shift, write it up; I'll incorporate it into my report on this."

"Sir, shouldn't we do something?"

"There's nothing we can do but watch, Ensign," Oragles shook his head. "Our SAR vehicles simply don't have the range to reach them."

"But the missiles?"

"We're still covered by our treaty with the Forest," Oragles bared his teeth in a vicious smile. "So we're the safest people in the system. Whatever the Forest pulls off to deal with that will be fascinating. Our job is to observe, measure and record.

"So we shall observe, measure and record. Is this clear?"

"Yes, sir!"
"Carry on."

Ugh. If Oragles had known that this sort of thing was waiting for him in the higher ranks, he'd never have fought for the position of Senior Scientist in the first place. But it was worth it.

This was so cool. That was the word he had heard Namone use, right? Right? No? Bah; it must've been someone else, then. Oragles was getting old, he could feel it in his bones, but he had some time yet.

Not enough time to crack the Forest's every last secret, but Oragles was sure nobody would manage that.

Not even the Forest.

*-*-*-*

Although the missiles shrieking through the void were the most pressing issue facing the Forest, it was not the only one.

A presence was felt.

It was not the Worm, which was quiescent. It was not any of the psychics of the Ingaba, who were the majority of the psychics the Forest had ever had contact with.

No, this presence came from somewhere else, yet it felt as though it was on top of them. Magnetics detected nothing. Nothing – other than the energy weapons – had impacted the Shield recently.

But there was something there. Or maybe someone, or maybe a group of someones; the Forest could not tell.

It could, however, ask. Not the Ingaba, not this time, no. This time they would simply ask the presence they felt what it was.

Or they could wait, and hope the presence remained for long enough to contact. There were a bunch of things the Ingaba called 'missiles' incoming, and they were moving quite fast, too.

Or they could simply not contact it at all, and hope it went away.

Turn 09 Vote

The Worm remains in effect, doubling all non-automatic successes.

The Ingaba estimate that 100d6 worth of missiles is heading for the Forest. Each success will cause damage to the Forest, unless it is blocked by the Shield or prevented in some other way.

Furthermore, the Ingaba estimate that the hostiles that built the missiles have probes, drones or scouts in system, and will be observing to see how the Ingaba and the Forest react to this.

The Research Agreement between the Forest and the Ingaba is set to expire at the end of Turn 12.
Communication Actions

[ ][Action] Ask the Research Base about the Prey.
-Requires 5 successes, 4/5

[ ][Action] Convince the Predators to aid the Forest (Psychic)
-On success, the Predators will deploy against the missiles. Each success they roll will remove one die from the missile's dice pool.
-This occurs before Crystal Shards are launched.
-Requires 15 successes. Successes are not banked.

[ ][Action] Reach out to the Strange Presence
-On success, meet a new faction/polity.
-Requires 30 successes. Success will be banked until success is achieved.

[ ][Action] Reach out to the Research Base.
-[ ][Action] Write-in what to speak about.
-Requires 5 successes

Defense Actions

[ ][Action] Erect the Shield! (Magnetic)
-A massive swarm of powerful weapons is rapidly approaching the Forest. The Shield is the final defense against such attacks.

[ ][Action] Prepare a Shard Volley (Crystal)
-This action primes resources to hurl a volley of razor sharp shards of crystal, splintered from the trunks and branches of the Forest itself. Successes are banked against future need, but only to a point – 10 successes per Magnitude of the Forest can be stored. 30/40 stored.

[ ][Action] Launch a Shard Volley at incoming missiles (Crystal)
-This action immediately spends resources to hurl crystal shards at incoming threats.
-Each success reduces the dice pool of the incoming attack by one.
-This will occur before it strikes the shield.
-This will roll before the Forest Action 'Launch a Shard Volley' takes effect

[ ][Action] Move towards where the Ingaba ships always appear from. (Gravity)
-Multiple side effects. The more successes this action has, the faster it occurs.

Growth Actions
-High-density particles remains in effect. All non-automatic successes are multiplied by 1.6.
-Sun Proximity 2 is in effect. All non-automatic successes have their multiplier increase by 0.2.
-The Sun has entered a high-activity phase; the bonus provided by Collector Trees to Focus Actions centered on Growth has increased by 1 per age category of the Collector Tree. This effect ends at the end of Turn 11.

[ ][Action] Grow the Forest
-100.73/400 successes to Mag 5

[ ][Action] Grow <Treename>
-Replace <Treename> with the name of a Special Tree from the Front Page. Variable cost.

[ ][Action] Upgrade <Treename>
-Replace <Treename> with the name of a Special Tree with an unlocked older form. Variable cost. This does not take up any additional Special Tree slots.

Growth progress is visible on the front page.

Offense Actions

[ ][Action] Soothe the Predators to keep them from messing around (Psychic)
-Opposed Action.

[ ][Action] Soothe the Research Base to mess with their psychics (Psychic)
-Opposed Action. The Ingaba have a solid group of Psychics, and may have brought more in since the last time this was tried.

[ ][Action] Magnetize Missiles (Magnetic)
-Opposed Action. Damages or destroys the drives, sensor systems or communications systems of the incoming missiles, potentially detonating them well short of their targets, eliminating more than would be expected. Chance of disabling some non-destructively, allowing for salvage.

Research Actions
-Most new Researches require various Elder Trees to be unlocked before they become available.
-All Psychic Research actions gain +1 success per Forest Magnitude while the Ingaba Research Agreement is in effect, provided at least one action is taken on them.
-Further Research Actions are available here.

[ ][Action] Assist the Ingaba Research Base (General)
-This action works to pay off the Forest's side of the deal with the Ingaba Directorate. In order to not default on the Treaty, at least ten dice must be paid into this action every turn for ten turns.
-Effect: For each die paid into this Action, the Forest will obtain one success to the most voted for Research Action with an asterisk.

[ ][Action] Wormhole Stabilization (Gravity, Void)
-Unlocks a Survival Action to stabilize an unstable Wormhole. The difficulty of this action has many variables.
-Requires 50 Successes to Research

[ ][Action] Wormhole Drawing (Gravity, Void)
-Unlocks an action to draw resources from a Wormhole, deliberately pulling matter and energy where once nothing was except memory. This is more effective than simply gathering resources from available particles and light.
-Requires 50 Successes to Research. 15.6/50

Survival Actions
-
Sun Proximity is in effect. The multiplier for all non-automatic Survival successes is increased by 0.2.

[ ][Action] Attempt to store resources against future need. (General)
-All successes stored. 164.8 successes banked against recovering future damage or to pay off the debt owed to the Ingaba Directorate.

Note: 5 Survival successes per turn are lost to the Ingaba Directorate as a result of paying for samples of new technologies.

[ ][Action] Sacrifice to the Worm (???)
-The Worm is always hungry. Feed the Worm that it might grow.
-Requires 100 successes before the Worm is satisfied. 80.4/100

[][Action] Expand the reach of the Forest, allowing it to gather resources from a larger area. (Magnetic)
-The Hoop Tree extends a powerful magnetic field, capturing stray particles that are greatly distant from the Forest and channeling them to the roots. Sufficient successes empower all Growth actions.
-With 10 successes, the successes of all Growth actions are increased by 10%. 7/10.

[ ][Action] Move closer to the local star to improve the Sun Proximity bonus. (Gravity)
-The more successes this has, the faster the movement occurs. The star provides much of the matter and energy used by the Forest; perhaps getting closer will increase the amount received.

[ ][Action] Utilize the Twist power to alter the apparent size of the Forest (Gravity)
-This action alters the target profile of the currently incoming missiles, potentially screwing with their programming and causing them to miss. This variant is more difficult than the standard variant, but on success it alters the success tables for the incoming missiles, changing from a success on a 4, 5, or 6 to a 5 or a 6.
-This action does not bank successes. 0/30.

[ ][Action] Erect the Empty Veil (Void)
-Cloak the Forest from opposing sensors, deliberately hiding it from all forms of detection.
-Opposed Action. Unlike with Shields, the Veil rolls against each other faction individually.
-On success, this will reduce the success tables of the incoming missiles much as the Twist power. If both succeed, the missiles will only succeed on a roll of 6.

Forest Actions
Forest Actions are those that rely on a simple majority vote to occur. They are seperate from other votes, and are frequently seperate from each other.

This turn, the Forest Action is used to determine if the stored Shards should be used against the missiles.

[ ][Forest] Yes
-This action uses the primed resources to launch high-velocity razor-sharp crystal shards at a nearby target. Successes stored by the 'Prepare a Shard Volley' action will be converted to successes against incoming Missiles, Strikecraft and/or ground forces, reducing their available dice pool.
-This action will reduce enemy dicepools on a one stored success to one die ratio each time.

[ ][Forest] No
-If this action wins, no stored resources will be spent.

Other

[ ][Action] Write-in
-For if you believe I'm missing something. I reserve the right to disapprove of any write-ins, or appropriate them for other purposes and places.

Focus

Choose any four actions from the above for the Forest to focus on. These are voted upon by the entire group, and are in addition to the individual actions taken by each member. Multiples should be indicated with a x#, so the second identical action would be x2, etc.

[ ][Focus] Action Name

These Actions will receive a number of automatic successes equal to the Magnitude of the Forest and any bonuses from other sources.

At the moment, the top four focus actions will win, each receiving the focus of the Forest.

Your Votes should look like the following:

[ ][Action] Action
[ ][Focus] Action 1
[ ][Focus] Action 2
[ ][Focus] Action 3
[ ][Focus] Action 4

[ ][Forest] <Yes or No>

Newcomers should add one of the following:

[ ][Tree] Heart Tree
[ ][Tree] Mind Tree
[ ][Tree] Root Tree

This vote will always be open.

A/N: Just a prelude, Trees. Move along, nothing to notice here, no sir.

If I've made any mistakes, please let me know.

Not messing around with 100d6 of missiles.

Focus action wise, I'm waiting on @Prime 2.0 or someone to lay out our medium and long-range planning. EDIT: UPDATE HE TOTALLY DID THAT

Alright, in that case I would like to remind everyone that trees grown this turn do not get to also act this turn, and are only relevant to combat next turn. Our main offensive capability next turn will be Laser trees, which use collector tree successes (the thing currently being supercharged by...

I don't think the Twist is a good investment of dice: for 30 successes, we reduce the enemy successes by on average around 17. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

To those loyal trees that have been diligently maintaining our shield turn after turn: You have my thanks.

Interesting that we are getting a full turn here. Turns are normally an indeterminate but significant period of time, while this situation is unlikely to last more than minutes to days. Yet we have time for full research and growth actions.
Odd.

Rather than the blind panic- we need to understand that focuses, you get 4 successes so at most 4 missiles a focus. Instead by using our focuses on growth actions we get 34 success per focus. What we need are player trees taking the anti missile actions.

As for the above this upgrades 3 magnetic trees to elder magnetic, going from +7 to shield to +13 as well as upgrading a tranquil tree to an elder tranquil tree to get more research done. I am putting 5 dice on the research treaty since we need 10 to fulfill our requirements.

Really wish we had proper weapons. This will have to do.
We are so very close to unlocking the laser power (which is kind of lulzy with how much we can pour into it with focuses thanks to collector trees)

Edit-
Right so keep in mind we have 100 dice coming at us, successes will be missiles we have to deal with- we have +7 auto success to shield can be raised to +13 with upgrading magnetic trees to elder magnetic (+1 to +3 and elder are always active even without player actions), we have 30 stored success that will cancel out missile success as well so that is already 43 before player dice vs a max of 100 (very unlikely to actually be 100). As long as players with an offense, defense or comms specialty use their dice on missile defense actions we will be fine.

edit 2- swapped off research base since we are overkilling it, superconductive will change shield and other magnetic actions to 3+ instead of 4+ and drop research cost on plasma trees.
