Ninja Trails: Kung-fu Battle Wizards in the Real World

[X] Go along with the plan
[X] Work towards purchasing a phone
[X] Research civilian usable seals
[X] Write-in
Talk with Vlad about illegal means of getting some fast money. What kind of criminal and grey area activity is going on in the country, how safe it is, what's are punishment, how law enforcement functioning, how criminal underground functioning. Hanzo should have some understanding of it from infiltration training. I'm thinking of Worm-stile superpowered robbing of criminals. Hanzo may not be sure about legality (or other dangers) of selling storage scrolls (Do ninja villages have restrictions on selling high-end military equipment?) so he may look into other illegal alternatives as well. That is on condition of Vlad having some criminal connections.

Why Vlad? Is it because he's a Russian?

Also, I don't think it's a good idea to mention illegal activities to the only supportive civilians around here.

I don't think that storage seals have been confirmed to not store anything with chakra in Marked for Death yet. We just know they don't store live things or seals (which admittedly, is most of the things which have chakra in them).
I can't find the quote right now, but I'm pretty sure it was confirmed at some point. I know we can't store chakra constructs or Noburi's chakra water, and I think chakra metal was also ruled out.

At any rate, we should test it.

It was mentioned he is practicing credit cards thefts (or other form of electronic money theft) and Eli don't like it. Vald could be part of Russian credit card theft network - then goods are bought by stolen cards, delivered to some (usually uninformed) participant address, resend to address of criminal abroad and/or resold. There were a lot of publication about such networks some years ago. Owner of the first address is kind of victim too - he is usually only one arrested and prosecuted.

Our ability to get anything done relies on being useful to those around us. The only thing we really have to trade are seals, so we need to figure out a way to make them usable to civilians.

@Radvic: What seals does Hazou have access to? In particular, does he have the Lesser Barrier Formation, the one that acts like a chakra tripwire? If not he should at least have the blank stored in Iron Nerve so we can research it. If we also have Air Dome that would be great.

We need to learn more about their technology but that's going to be more efficient if we wait to get to the city and then ask "what's that?" a lot.

In other news: @Radvic, I don't think people lost interest, I think they just didn't have anything else to add and we're waiting for voting to close and the next update.

@Everyone: if you want this quest to continue, now would be a good time to say so.

What seals does Hazou have access to?
Hazou can make (with relative safety):

  • Generic explosive seal
  • Generic storage seal
  • Time delayed storage seal (PMYF)
  • Grindy up and release storage seal (Macerator/Misterator)
  • Better grindy up and release storage seal (Macerator V2)
At the moment, he has just made two storage seals: one holding his stack of ~100 papers, the other in the custody of Eli and Vlad (not holding anything).

Hazou knows the seal blanks for but doesn't know how to infuse (would need to research):

  • Five Seal Barrier (Magic stationary barrier)
  • Kagome's implosion seal
  • Lesser Seal Barrier
  • Seals he saw in Vilage Hidden in the Mountain but has no idea what they do
  • Seals he saw in a casino but has no idea what they do
  • Other seals I may have forgotten which Hazou interacted with prior to the Arikada arc
He does NOT know Air Dome or any of the other seals from Leaf. This AU assumes that the Arikada incident didn't happen, and that Hazou was transported to earth shortly after leaving Hot Springs while working on one of his first ideas (linked storage seals for a merchant empire). Hazou is welcome to do sealing research for anything he desire. Note that Hazou does not know if the effects of a sealing failure on earth would be at all similar to the effects of a sealing failure in the Elemental Nations.

Fair. For those who didn't notice, I made this edit to the last voting counter a while ago
Due to lack of interest, I will be focusing on my other quest I am running. I'm not declaring this quest dead, just... slowing down.
Personally, I am much more excited about writing for Conquest of Shambhala than Ninja Trails. This is largely because I planned out a bunch of stuff for CoS and it's an original idea but didn't for NT (seeing as it started as an omake of a Naruto quest). This means that Ninja Trails is substantially more dependent on player involvement for me to be motivated to write it. When I saw that general interest (as measured by replies, likes, and votes) seemed substantially higher for CoS than for NT, I decided to just focus my writing effort there. Due to getting specific requests from readers to continue coughkibacougheaglejarlcough, I will be making the next Ninja Trails story post today (if time allows).

@Everyone: if you want this quest to continue, now would be a good time to say so.
In general, if I need to direct most of what happens in this world and it doesn't seem like people are reading/enjoying it, I will stop writing it. The ways I know people are reading it and enjoying it are: 1) Voting activity 2) General speculation, analysis, planning, or question posts, 3) Likes or other reactions to story posts, and 4) PMs/messages (re: when is the next chapter coming out, is NT dead etc). The more of the four above things that happen, the more likely I will continue to write. In this case, enough of category 4 happened to make me want to write the next chapter.

Voting is closed: Plan: Go along with the plan is victorious

1) Voting activity 2) General speculation, analysis, planning, or question posts, 3) Likes or other reactions to story posts, and 4) PMs/messages (re: when is the next chapter coming out, is NT dead etc)

I suck at planning. SUCK.(I mean, I could put forth a plan for what I'd want to do, and it probably wouldn't match what Hazō would want to do, and the survival factor would be shitty because I would tend to go for situations where I (metaphorically) poke a sleeping bear to see if I can Kawarimi away fast enough.)

My analysis also tends to be more reactionary, rather than generating original insight.

I read a lot of fanfiction. Authors tend to vary on whether or not they want more PMs. Typically "This story is awesome!" is good, and AFAIK, "When's the next chapter coming out plsplsplsplsplsplsPLZZZZZZZ" is not-so-good.

I do enjoy this divergence from a divergence from Naruto Canon. I suppose I just don't exactly fit-in with the die-hard Questers.

Chapter 13: Appearances
Note: in this chapter {words} is English, "words" is Japanese.

Chapter 13: Appearances

Three men stood by a road. All wore the faces of weary travelers, looking expectantly down their straight section of road. The front-most was a scrawny young man, of short stature and awkward stance. His pant legs were torn, he had a slight tilt to his stance, and leaned against a staff as if born down by the weight of his pack. His dirty blonde hair was kept in place by a hair tie, as his dirt marked face peered down the road with hope.

At the rear stood a tall and thin man with his pack off and on the ground. His black hair framed his face from the shortly cropped hair on top and the well-kept beard below. He occasionally offered a word to the man in front, often letting out a sharp laugh at the retort. Both these men seemed at peace with where they were, with relaxed postures and open smiles.

Between them stood a third man. Awkwardly tall, seemingly uncomfortable and without a pack. He looked between the men in front of him and behind him as if following their cues, rarely responding to words they spoke. Where the other men had amiable expressions on their faces and mostly looked down the road, this man had a nervous quality to his face, glancing in every direction. Occasionally looking into the forest behind them, across the road, or even into the sky.

They stood there for several minutes, putting their thumbs out to the road whenever they heard or saw a car pass.

{Man, nobody's stopping for us.} Vlad said.

Eli shrugged, {Eh, probably because he looks like he's going to murder someone.} He nodded towards Hazou. {Not too much we can do about it. Maybe if we put him behind me? Have him stand back a bit?} Eli pointed towards Hazou, then behind him. {Stand here.}

Hazou looked at Eli, figured that the pointing probably meant he should go there, so he went there. Eli took Hazou's spot in the middle.

{Should be better.} Eli said.

{I'll unleash my secret weapon.} Vlad offered. He reached up and pulled out his hair tie, hair falling sloppily over his face. {I'm gonna make the pose.} He shifted imperceptibly and leaned harder against his staff, putting a fair amount of his weight on it. He swept his hair out of his eyes and leaned with his thumb out.

{You know, it might be better if you hid the ax on your pack?} Eli critiqued.

{Nah man. Fits best on the outside.} Vlad shrugged. {Besides, it hasn't hurt our chances yet.}

Two minutes later, the first vehicle that saw them pulled over and stopped.

-o-

The contraption that had stopped for them had a small enclosed space with two seats in it, and a larger flat area with some equipment in the rear. Through unspoken agreement, Vlad had taken the seat in the car, and Eli and Hazou sat in the opening in the back.

Eli and Vlad's packs sat next to Eli and Hazou, along with some tools and equipment Hazou hadn't seen before that had been in the truckbed. Hazou was busy investigating the equipment. It had some sharp edges, but wasn't metal, and he wasn't sure what it's purpose was. He looked at Eli who was doing things with the phone. He tried saying something, but his voice was lost in the howling wind produced by the contraption and the speed they were traveling at. Eli handed Hazou the phone.

"Driver taking us halfway. Will need to get second ride to Bangor." The phone read.

Hazou hit the button he was supposed to hit to talk and responded, "Is there a problem?"

The phone didn't change after he spoke. He looked up at Eli. Eli held out his hand, and Hazou placed the phone in it. When Eli handed it back it read, "You'll have to talk louder or type. It can't make out your voice over the wind."

Hazou again hit the button and shouted, "Is there a problem!?" After confirming that there were words on the screen, he handed it back to Eli.

Eli didn't speak, but touched the phone with his fingers repeatedly, then reached over to hand the phone back to Hazou. While reaching over, the truck hit a particularly large bump, jolting Hazou and knocking the phone out of Eli's lap. Between the shock of the bump and the phone's impact, Hazou's henge failed. The tall, white hikers's visage was replaced by Hazou's 13 year old Mist body, complete with forest camouflage and kunai sharp jaw, and killing expression. Eli's eyes widened and he let out a shout.

-o-

Your plans have been interrupted due to the shocking force of the truck's movement. You're henge failed and, as per your safety measures, you didn't tell Eli or Vlad about it previously. Currently, you know Eli has noticed, but don't think either Vlad or the driver have. What do you do?

[] Write-in

Additionally, if you wish to change your itinerary for when you get to Bangor (assuming you go there), you should include that in your vote. The current plan (as communicated by Eli and Vlad to Hazou) is:
  1. Arrive (via a second hitchhike)
  2. Secure temporary housing
  3. Secure additional food
  4. Begin the process for getting a phone
  5. Other purchases for Hazou (currently just a dictionary)
  6. Solidify plans for storage seal money making (input from Hazou will greatly help here)
  7. Spend time at a place with computer access to look for Hazou's remaining teammates (exact mechanics on this they have been unspecific on)

AN: I considered just going past this with what I would do in Hazou's situation, then realized you guys might want to respond to this incident differently than I would, so stopped it.
Voting will be open until Wednesday, February 8 at 10 AM PST.

Note: I'm going backpacking in the desert starting Monday (where neither internet nor cell coverage exist), so will be unable to respond to question or things from then until voting closes.

Fuckit, I made a plan.

[x] Action Plan: Cat.

Goals:
STAY CALM. DO NOT OVERREACT.
Act like a responsible adult from your deathworld, who is calm and collected.

Maintain rapport with Eli and Vlad.

Continue with plan as previously.. er, planned.

Trust might have been diminished. It will need to be re-established.

If asked about the henge breaking, state that it's standard opsec.

Actions:

Stay calm. Do not freak out.

Re-henge into prior disguise. Evaluate Eli's reaction.

Possible reactions:

Finger to lips in universal gesture of silence.

Full palm held out, all fingers flat together and pointing upward, universal for stop.

Kurosawa Stoic Face #3.
Possibly add in a bit of Kurosawa Annoyed Eye-roll #5.

If Eli is agreeable, wait until the truck driver drops y'all off. Try to pretend like nothing happened. Don't say anything first. Take home from negotiations: whoever speaks first loses. Eli will mention this to Vlad in English. When they bring up:

The disguise itself:

It's standard opsec for missions where hiding is necessary.

Be evasive when asked about how it works.
If asked if they can do it(or civilians, or something along those lines), give an uncertain "no."

Hazo's age:

(Stay calm. Do not freak out. Act like an adult.)
Say something along the lines of being considered an adult in the ninja world due to training. If pestered, say training is from birth. Try to be evasive. (Stay calm. Act like an adult.)

Trust:

Ask them to evaluate you based on your actions and potential rather than your use of a disguise, (---er, I got distracted and lost my train of thought here.)

Their personal safety:

Kurosawa Bored Face #4:
Mildly state that you could have killed them a thousand times over if you wanted, and they couldn't defend against you even if they had preparation. You specifically do not want to kill them, as aside from the value they provide with information and travel, their deaths would be needless and distastefull(??? That's how I feel about it, but I don't think that fits Hazo's thinking. Might need reshaping to get a similar concept without sounding like the Black Knight from A Practical Guide To Evil.)

Strikethrough just to keep in memory of what was there. It is no longer considered part of the plan. Updated:

State that you have no intention of harming them. Aim for peaceful body gestures, steady, unexaggerated movements.

Edit: gonna just list a few people(in no particular order) who might be able/want to pick this plan apart. It would make me happy. :)

There are a few people who I don't think I've seen in this thread, and probably one or more I've forgotten.. :/

We're with a temporary ally. There's nothing unusual about breaking henge, and these people have so far been unthreatening. You're still in the open, so are able to jump to safety if need be. Currently things are manageable.

I don't think this part is necessary or particularly helpful. We haven't threatened them, and I don't think they will jump to the conclusion that we will kill them for seeing our true face.

If they do panic about that, then I would phrase it more along the lines of "I have no intention of harming you." Pointing out that we could trivially kill them at any time is not likely to increase their calm.

I borrowed the idea from MfD Jiraiya smacking down our team. No-go on that?

I suppose the difference between Deathworld-genin and Earth-civilians is enough that's not a necessity, yeah?

Haznou calmly restored henge. He quickly retrieved the phone and typed:
"Nothing to worry about friend Eli, just insignificant camouflage malfunction".
Eli typed back:
"But...Which is the real you? Are you really a kid?"
Haznou thought quickly. Should he disclose his age? Is it dangerous? They don't have ninjas, are all minor are considered dependent? Had no civil standing, can not own property?"
Haznou typed:
"I'm not a kid. Neither of those two looks are real. Ninja forbidden to show their real face in foreign land"

It wasn't too happy-making for the team when Jiraiya did it, either. :>

Crap. I missed that this updated. Good to see it again.

Alternative that I'm not actually voting for because I'm not sure it's a good idea, although it's probably what I would do in the moment:

[] Plan Gaslight

Resume henge. Act like nothing happened. Refuse to answer questions. Continue with previous plan once we get to Bangor.

Bah. Sure, it was implied that voting would close early, but it was never clearly stated and obviously it's not what Radvic meant and you're being ridiculous by saying that it was and I'll tell you what we SHOULD be talking about is the Bangor Maasacre committed by the radical Mist terrorists and how Hazou is going to prevent it from happening again, because surely that's what really matters, right?

@eaglejarl is correct, I'm focusing my writing energy on CoS. That said, character creation got far, far away from me with that story, so I will be rebooting it by jumping to the exciting bits and posting a new thread. My problem with NT is that I never had a plot or plan of any sort when I started it. If I figure out an interesting plot and decide I want to pursue that story, I will continue it. If not, then I will not. I wouldn't hold your breath.
