The premise of this Quest is simple: make moolah, make games and sell them to nerds. Not necessarily in that order.

The year is 1981 and after the legitimization of 3rd party gaming due to Activision several companies have formed or opened divisions purely to develop games.
You are one of them. A single among plural, a voice in the choir. But every voice can resonate. Even the smallest number can adjust the sum and grow into a dominating market force of gami- I think I got off-metaphor there in my inspirational intro speech.

Anyway you lot are the Embodiment of Corporate, you don't really exist so much as you influence how things are done.
You influence budgets, create projects and hire staff by proxy, through the faceless people of [Insert Company Here]

--

You look over your kingdom with a grin. It's good to be the Boss.
Your faithful wageslaves uh Coders, eh wageslaves will do. They are bent over keyboards programming in the language of SCIENCE to make ENTERTAINMENT
Every tap of the keys sounds like the ring of the cash register as you know your big hit is being developed under your watchful eye!

-

You dont look up as you hear the Boss cackle maniacally. He does it a couple times a day so it's no real shock.
You just keep plugging in commands and setting things up for 'his' new game.
It actually seems to come together nicely in the code which is great, the Boss promised a bonus to every wageslave (seriously he used the word wageslave...Who DOES that?) if the game is a hit

-

Is he cackling again? You wonder as you roll your eyes, another few forms getting the stamp of your approval/signature. Soo much paperwork in starting this thing up, but the current climate means Profit from the get-go so, Bonuses to the Board all around! Especially the only one not actually insane or obsessed with something or another, ie You. A whole new vista of profit. A mountain of untapped riches and a plethora of foes to outwit and destroy.
Yep, totally sane and unobsessed are you.

The year is 1981 and Unless the Megacorp origin is picked you guys are going to have a bitch of a time surviving the Video Game Crash of 83.
That depends on whether or not we go arcade or computers, as those two sections of video gaming were less effected by the crash by comparison to the home market. Heck if I thought it would be reasonable I'd have selected home computer for the venue and try to make something like Ultima, Zork, or maybe even Dragon Quest.

The video game crash may not happen because random events and such...
Or it could be worse :ogles:

Well this seems nice and tied up.
Or rather, the exact opposite

New Game Inc. (yay I dont have to change the title)
the Startup company
with their first release on it's own Arcade system
in the Action genre.

Company finances:
50,000 Money

None

Monthly expenses:
5,000 Employee

Your goal is to create the best Action game ever seen on the Arcade.
Good luck.

Do note that Coders is a group, all non-named characters (Boss is a name, he'll fire you if you say otherwise) are groups for macromanagement purposes.

But what are you doing this week?

[ ] Do nothing (really?)
[X] Start an Arcade Game

Your coders are working below you, tapping away furiously trying to work out every bug and input every enemy. All to your grand design MWAHA-cough anyway.
Now what was your grand design again?

Games require at least a Graphic, AI and Controller Input at level 1, anything more is optional but enhances the game.

Games!
[ x ] A shooting game, only instead of Space invaders style shooter it's a dungeon crawl of an evil castle of some sort-fantasy or scifi- where the player has to maneuver around enemies and a maze(basically Gauntlet 1, Akalabeth or Wolfenstien 3D style.)
Names:
Star Knave

Castle Runner
Maze Gladiator

Needs more details to be worth bonuses.
Sci fi or fantasy?
main enemy type? (green aliens, lizard aliens, demons, undead)

Since at this time the market should be relatively flooded with scifi games that would be safer, but a fantasy game might pick up a bigger following since there should be very few arcade games like that, hmmm...I know a compromise fantasy setting with lizard aliens, and possibly a small arsenal that can be gained through game play. Like start with a sword with short range then gain a gun and possibly some bombs with maybe a few power ups(spread shot, speed up, 5 second invulnerability, and whatever the programmers feel they can reasonably put in with the time given.)

Fantasy with Scifi aliens?

Aliens invade a sword&sorcery world, and it's up to LinkThe Hero to defend Middle EarthHyruleThe Kingdom

I can work with that. Well get some bonuses if it goes through (what is masked unless it is voted for)

I thought a bit of originality might help get some of the preexisting market and grab people who want something different.

[X] A sci-fi/fantasy hybrid shooter. A swords & sorcery fantasy world is invaded by sci-fi lizard-men and it's up to you to stop them! You start off with two weapons: a basic sword and a wand of fireballs (which you recharge by finding potions). As you progress you find better magic wands and enchanted weapons, and you can pick up and use the lizardmen's own high-tech weapons against them.

Suggested Names:
Star Knight
Knave of Space

[X] AI I (500 Money, 0 Employee)
[X] Graphics II (1,000 Money, 1 Employee) + The Boss
If you're going to bank on a unique setting, you need to make sure the players can actually tell what the f*ck it is.
[X] Controller Input II (1,000 Money, 1 Employee)
Nothing cripples an action game quite like bad controls.
[X] High Score (500 Money, 1 Employee)
Remember, this is an arcade game: one of the biggest appeals of an arcade game is getting the high score so you can rub it in everyone's faces.

So the boss doesn't count as an Employee for the purpose of working on the game itself, right?
EDIT: If the game does well enough, we could maybe resell it to home computers and consoles with more features like sounds and better AI as a special edition or something.

The Boss is essentially a '1/turn +20 on any roll'
He doesnt take a slot because as you Upgrade your staff from the basic Coder they give bonuses on their actions.

The Advertiser for example gives a +5 when put in any Marketing job but can't program any more. the Marketing Director (the maxxed level Market line of Employees) gives a +50 bonus.

A HD edition is totally valid, its actually an option if you Research it first, letting you grab the previous Story score and devote more time to Graphics and such

Plot summary:

You wake up in a cell, called to action by a mysterious voice, who gives you your weapons, and commands you to free the magical being in the lizards light tower. Proceeding upwards, you learn the tower is actually a beacon, drawing the lizards in. Along the way, you collect holotapes explaining that the lizards are named the Vethaki, and they have some form of hive mind. Eventually, you reach the top and free the being, a powerful angel by the name of Gaghiel, who looks like a 'old testament' style angel, eldritch abominationally and all. Gaghiel proceeds to explain that the Vethaki are attempting to destroy the world pillars, which will cause the sun to go supernova. He then teleports you into a Vethaki slave camp, in order to liberate it and free a fighting force to attack the Vethaki homeship. After freeing them, you are treated to a boss battle where you are barely saved, by a Vethaki of all things. Leopold, his name is, gives some cryptic warnings, and hands you a upgraded weapon.

You proceed to teleport onto the homeship, where you fight your way through to the middle, and kill the Vethaki kingadent, causing a psychic backlash, killing many Vethaki. Then, Gahgiel reappears, and, gloating, reveals that the Vethaki were actually the GOOD GUYS, and that the world pillars allow him and his ilk to psychically control all the mortal races. A boss battle occurs, and, after you beat Gaghiel, he chuckles, and gives the PC one last warning, that the other angels, properly spelled 'Angles', as in, 'The Many Angled Ones', will crush the remains of the Vethaki, and proceeds to, with his final breath, destroy whats left of the Homeship, and, seemingly, the PC with him.

Yeah, that's why I didn't put High Score in my vote, unless of course it would be a small secondary objective to be finished if there's enough time and space left, which I doubt.

Also from the description we have going already this game feels like it's going to be a scifi arcade version of Akalabeth...only most likely more forgiving.
