Necromancy Quest!

Uncle's taking the lead, as well as The Dreamer.

I feel like you guys are gonna be disappointed when you find out who it is, but nyan. :p

O.4- The Dreamer
The Dreamer

Who watches the Watchmen, Who controls the Masters, Who hunts the Hunters?

Necromancers. They are the Apex predator and the ultimate prey. They command creatures far beyond other humans, but without their power they are worthless. It is this power as well as this weakness that drives so many magical men to madness.

Inferior men.

You are Calvin Witherwood. With you stand your allies, the survivor John Jameson and your fellow necromancer Hanzo Shinigaruma. You have a dream, that one day Necromancers and the Sheep- no, Uninitiated- will live together in harmony. The other Necromancers laugh at you, and John shoots them. The Survivors saw you as easy prey, till Hanzo's attacks brought them to the flock., one way or the other...

You look over the Hermitage that you have built, Hermitage being the common parlance for a settlement of Necromancers. The assortment of like-minded Necromancers and Open-Minded cattle- Unititated- you collected have just secured a great source of Lumber. With the soil that they've all procured, you are almost able to have a sustainable community.

There are challenges on the horizon.

Necromancers, particularly the Lords, will be offended at your thought-experiment if it gains any traction. Survivors will just bomb any Hermitage that seems like it's going along strong.

But you have a dream. You will change the world.

What's the worst that could happen? Adam himself sends someone down? Pssh.

-.1- Character...Creation?
You feel like you're almost in some sort of dream, as you practically float up the grand stairs. You only vaguely notice Daniel leaving out of the front door.

"Uncle, what's going on?" You ask lightly, whisping over to his side. He smiles softly to you as you hug his leg, glad to be back from that awful place.

"First, you're going to tell me how your day out was. Next, we're going to get you into the family business." Uncle smiles in the way that shows off all of his sharp teeth. Pretty...

"C'mon little Arhi-chan, let's get you some chocolate." Uncle says, picking you up and carrying you off.

Ahhh~

--
Uncle listened quietly as you began to detail your adventure. He was very supportive when you expressed disgust over getting ambushed, but he stopped you a little ways into your story.

"Aria, that wasn't very smart to call Daniel by his name in front of strangers." Uncle chastises you.

"Why? That's his name!" You pout.

Uncle gives you a soft smile as he tussled your hair. "Aria, we're made famous by our names and deeds. All of us are famous, so when you use our names, people listen. Names have power."

Names have power...? Hmm...

"Okay...Tell Daniel that I'm sowwy..." You look away, embarrassed. Uncle laughs, and bids for you to continue.

After you finish, Uncle tuts in annoyance. "You did good getting out of that situation little Ari, but you could've used your position to get information. Do you know who those guys were? Why they were there?"

You look away from Uncle's piercing black-eyed stare. Ummm....

Uncle sighs, "It's okay, I can get it from Daniel this time. But these are the kinds of things you need to remember, as you get older." You nod as you walk down a second-floor hallway you're not familiar with.

Just as you turn the corner...

"Ariaaaaaa! I'm so happy you're baaaack!"

Ah, Madame Red! You run up to the tall red-head and hug her waist tightly. She wraps her arms around you as well, saying, "I got a present for you! Here, here!"

She pulls out a necklace, fashioned from the vertebrae and a bit of rope. You're a little confused as to why she made this as she ties it around your neck, but you're happy nonetheless!

You hear Uncle's shoes on the stone floor as he walks up to you both, pressing a hand against your back. "Come along now, we can talk as a family over dinner tonight."

You nod, and wave goodbye to Madame Red as she kisses Uncle on the cheek before skipping off.

Family...?
--

You ascended another flight of stairs, up to a very...wet, enclosed hallway. You thought you were at the destination, when Uncle took another flight of stairs up to a belltower! You didn't have much time to admire the view of the countryside, as Uncle had erected gates and some sort of spiked wire around every ledge.

Under the bell, there was a trap door. Opening it, Uncle revealed a ladder leading down into pitch blackness. It was dangerous, especially when the ladder stopped being a ladder and became carved hand-holds, but you eventually reached...

...Uncle's Workshop.

It was massive, easily taking up an entire floor of the regular Cathedral. Different workstations were set up here, some with corpses sitting on slabs without anything in their chest, and some wholly intact bodies sitting beside...open books?

Uncle led you to the back of the Workshop. It looked like three of the slabs were pushed together to made a table, and there were three different bodies on it.

"It's time you learn to be a Necromancer."
--

So you learned. He had you choose one of the bodies on the table to be your first, and you picked...

[x] The Child, a boy no bigger than you.
[x] The Woman, a woman that seems like the perfect definition of 'average'.
[x] The Man, a...man of size.

After that, Uncle cleared the rest of the bodies away and directed you to a nearby wall.

The Undead are quantified by five characteristics.

Control: The ability to enforce your will upon The Undead in question. A higher number means that The Undead will harder to control, but will be able to perform complex commands.

Grace: The ability of the Undead to navigate the world. Higher numbers mean higher Dexterity.

Force: The raw killing potential of the Undead. Higher numbers mean higher Lethality.

Awareness: The sensory ability of the Undead. A higher number means that the Undead is able to comprehend more of its surroundings.

Potency: The Infectious Potential of the Undead. A higher number means the living will find it hard to overcome The Infection, and also be harder to steal away by higher-willed Necromancers.

"Which characteristic seems the most important to you?"

[x] Control
[x] Grace
[x] Awareness
[x] Force
[x] Potency

As you answer him, you feel your necklace begin to glow. As the pale red light washes over you, you feel...

[x] Strings of red running up and down your arms, making you feel...better.
[x] A lightness in your head, like there's something out there that you just...want.
[x] A jittering sensation in your legs, like you could run...away.
[x] A bursting sensation behind your eyes, almost like you could see...more.
[x] A warm sensation in your chest, making you feel...whole.
[x] A heavy sensation in all of your limbs, very...heavy.

Uncle smiles as the light begins to fade. He asks if you decided on a name for your new pet yet. You replied with...

[x] Shaking your head.
[x] Write-In

Man, that was a thing.

-.2- A Family is Joined, a Family is Born.
This is fun. I'm having fun. Are you having fun?
--x--

Uncle smiles as you grow increasingly enamored with the child on the slab, after you feel that full thickness in your limbs reside. As you take in his cold, stiff features you vaguely hear Uncle say something like f'raghn fhesoo grawfnhae hejeuuw

"Well Aleister, Maya, it has truly been fun. Aleister, you were always one of my favorite sycophants . Maya...you were pretty, I suppose. Not really my type. Too...Sane. Hehehehehe!"

The other two bodies on the slab shakily rose to their feet. Only now do you realize that those bodies were the mangled corpses of your Mother and Father.

And yet...you can't find it in you to care. Hehehehehe.

[-5 Alignment]
[+1 Instability]

Uncle sends them away, and you find yourself presiding over the body of this boy. You wonder how he died, how Uncle got ahold of his corpse. Did Uncle kill him himself, or was he just another casualty?

"Now, for the Raising. All Necromancers use their life force, or in other words their Soul, to power the Zombie Infection. However, you need to have a special...kind of Soul to make it Infectious. That's what is referred to as The Aptitude. You, Ms. Crowley..." He ruffles your blonde hair affectionately, "...have just the right kind to join your family's art."

He directs you to make a cut on the palm of your hand with one of the many sharp implements around the workshop. You are a little timid at first, but something calls you...like your blood wants to leave your body.

You oblige it.

Your blood runs down your hand, and Uncle directs you to drip it in one of the boy's many cuts.

You feel...
stirring. There's a wriggling feeling in your tummy that's spreading all around you. It's almost powerful enough to make you start shaking, but you don't feel any kind of pain...

"And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low? Only a cat of a different coat, that's all the truth I know..."

Uncle was saying things that don't make sense agaiiinnnnn...

"...ahhhgh." The dead boy on the table gasps. You shrink back in surprise, as Uncle smiles and continues.

"And so he spoke, and so he spoke, that Lord of Castamere. And now the rains weep o'er his halls, with no one there to hear."

Skill Test- Necromancy (d2-2): 1-2 = -1 = Failure.

The boy struggles for a moment, before slumping against the stone. Uncle looks...disappointed?

"Ah, you're not quite a prodigy it seems. That's a shame, and I set such an eerie mood too."

You look at him quizzically as he wraps some cloth around the cut on your hand.

"This boy is rather long-dead, I'm afraid. Most of his soul is gone, so you didn't have much to infect. However, my preserving saved some small amount of life-force, so that's always good."

Uncle walked around the slab to better survey the corpse.

"It seems that what you lack in finesse you make up for in talent. Perhaps it's her meddling or your own qualities, but this boy has a very potent Infection inside him. You won't be wanting for other zombies for long."

[Brother gained Trait: Pure- Add +2 to Infection/Conversion Resistance Rolls]

The boy stirred again, and when he was able to sit up you practically tackled him back down in an overjoyed hug. "Brother!" You called out in glee.

Uncle smirked,
"Brother, eh? Ironic. Well then, let's put your Brother through his paces, yes?"
--
Despite what Uncle said, it was actually your education that was done first. You learned about the fine points of how to control a zombie, what a zombie could and could not do, and a warning that while getting bitten by a feral zombie should be okay, getting bit by a Necromancer's Zombie will likely still Infect you.

[Gained Skill: Knowledge (Necromancy)]
[Gained Skill: Necromancy]
--
After that, Uncle regretted to inform you that Brother was severely hampered by his lack of life-force.

[Brother gained Trait: Corpse- The zombie is desiccated, and is poorer for it. Starting traits are 1.]

You pout, but there's really nothing you could do about it, in the end of things.
--
That was your life for the next month. Learning how to control Brother, and how to fight with him at your side. Uncle noted that you have a particular proficiency in noticing things, and that has extended to your...siblings.

[Aria's favored Trait is Awareness, so it is easier to upgrade that Trait and Aria's skill, Notice.]

In addition, after everything that's happened to you, you feel like you've made a major Advancement in life, and feel stronger for it.

[Level Up! See End of Update]

Once that month passes, you reflect in your room alone one night about things. You were looking forward to the next months being more of the same, until...

[x] Your 10th Birthday!
[x] Madame Red invited you to a...masked ball?
[x] You were woken up by one for the last glass windows shattering.
