Naruto: Shinobi Rekindled

I would suggest that you are going significantly too far in trying to show the reader that he doesn't really remember anything about this world. Earlier examples, like not knowing the world had chakra, or not recognizing the word "hokage", seemed a bit unlikely to me, but ok, not worth making an issue of. Not knowing what having fewer carvings of village leaders in a stone mountain means, however … is silly. Any child could tell you, no knowledge about the world is needed.

And then, for him to panic because he he's earlier in the timeline … why? Youve gone to great lengths to let us know he doesn't remember anything useful anyway, why does it bother him that he's in an earlier time, where he … still doesn't rememer anything useful?
I can tell you if it wasn't for the fact that the coof coof lockdowns happened, I wouldn't be bored enough to start re-reading Naruto and random fanfics. For me personally, I completely forgot most of the story and characters of Naruto. I still have to go to wiki to make sure I'm not too way off on the lore. So it might seem to fans to be strange but regular people kind of forgot this stuff. And if you had little knowledge and you hear something that might help secure your future of course you're going to try to remember it. But, I get where you're coming from and I don't think I'll be adding more of it to the story.

Chapter 14: “The Last Hurrah”
The shrill cry of Kenji's alarm shattered the still, inky darkness that enveloped his cramped room. He groggily rubbed his eyes, squinting at the luminous digits on the clock - it was four o'clock in the morning. With a reluctant grunt, Kenji swung his legs over the edge of the bed and hastily pulled on his training attire. The brisk morning air greeted him as he opened the door, but he welcomed it with determination. This was the dawn of yet another day devoted to the relentless pursuit of his personal training regimen.

As the pallid moonlight yielded to the encroaching dawn, Kenji was already immersed in his practice within the walled courtyard. The once meticulously groomed space had given way to the signs of countless hours of relentless training, the earth worn and scarred in places, and wooden targets riddled with the evidence of Kenji's dedication. His unwavering focus was centered on perfecting his taijutsu, embodying the flowing leaf style that demanded an exquisite balance of elegance and strength.

With each fluid, seamless movement, he integrated the throwing of kunai and shuriken at an array of targets dispersed throughout the training grounds. "Focus, Kenji, focus," he muttered to himself as he landed a blow, his breath visible in the crisp morning air. 'You've got to do better than that,' as a shuriken landed on the target with a thud.

Kenji's motions were deliberate and exact, each blow and throw aimed with lethal precision. As he persevered, he sensed his taijutsu enhancing, his movements growing increasingly fluid and graceful with each passing moment. The incorporation of kunai and shuriken added an extra dimension of challenge, compelling him to maintain his focus and accuracy even as he performed intricate taijutsu maneuvers.

"Almost there, just a bit more," he whispered, steadying his breath and redoubling his efforts. Then, Kenji concentrated on channeling chakra to his legs, amplifying it to propel himself onto a nearby branch while continuing to hurl shuriken at various targets, simulating the chaos of battle. He leapt from branch to roof, roof to branch, and branch to branch, his agility and control on full display. The rustling of leaves and the rhythmic thud of his feet punctuated the otherwise silent morning.

As he perched on a branch, Kenji scanned the courtyard below, the intricate layout of his makeshift training grounds etched into his memory. He exhaled, steeling himself for the next challenge. Finally, he launched himself into a pond, aware that any mistake would plunge him into the frigid depths.

As he focused on maintaining his chakra control to repel the water and thrust himself away from the chilling embrace of the pond, the icy water splashed around him, its cold tendrils threatening to disrupt his concentration. As he began to submerge, he gritted his teeth and cursed under his breath, "Fuck, that's cold!" The biting chill clawed at his body, but he refused to succumb.

Kenji emerged from the water, gasping for breath, his eyes wide with determination. "God dammit, I screwed up again," he swore to the uncaring water, his voice echoing through the courtyard.

He continued his training, this time solely focused on his control with the water walking exercise, as he concentrated on staying dry while practicing his taijutsu and throwing techniques.

The first rays of sunlight stretched across the horizon, bathing the landscape in a warm glow. Kenji knew the time had come to conclude his morning training. He stood, drenched in sweat and exhaustion, but invigorated by a renewed sense of purpose. He had pushed himself beyond his limits, honing his abilities in preparation for the upcoming challenges.

"Not much more time left before it becomes a clusterfuck. God damn war is still ongoing, and doesn't look like it's going to stop. Guess I've got to enjoy these next few months of peace before things turn to shit," Kenji sighed and allowed his body to relax. With only little time left before graduation, Kenji retreated indoors to change, eager to face a new day and continue his training at the academy.

Kenji wiped the sweat from his brow and stretched as he stood outside the entrance to the Ninja Academy. With a deep breath, he stepped inside the bustling building, his eyes scanning the familiar halls for his friend, Akihiro. Spotting him near their usual meeting spot, Kenji grinned and made his way over.

"Hey, Akihiro! You ready for another exciting day of training?" Kenji teased, clapping his friend on the back.

Akihiro rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "You say that as if there's ever a dull day here. So, any bets on what they'll have us doing today?"

Kenji shrugged, a playful smile tugging at his lips. "The usual, I guess. We've been doing a lot of taijutsu and chakra control lately, so maybe we'll get a break from that?"

Akihiro snorted. "No chance, my friend. This is the Academy, after all."

As they bantered, their instructor entered the room. The chatter among the students quickly died down as he cleared his throat.

"Alright, class. Today we'll be doing something a bit different. We're heading outside for an obstacle course."

A mix of groans and excited murmurs filled the room, and the students filed outside after their instructor. Once on the training field, Their instructor explained the rules and asked the class to separate into groups of three. Kenji, Akihiro, and another student, Hina, quickly formed a team.

The obstacle course was an impressive array of challenges, testing the students' agility, strength, and reflexes. One by one, the teams took their turns, some faring better than others. As each team progressed, it became apparent that there were hidden traps designed to catch the unwary off-guard.

Finally, it was Kenji's team's turn. As they entered the course, Kenji's earlier training served him well. He moved with agility and grace, his eyes sharp and alert for any sign of danger. Akihiro and Hina followed his lead, managing to stay one step ahead of most of the traps.

As they neared the end of the course, one particularly clever trap caught Hina off-guard, sending her tumbling to the ground. Kenji and Akihiro exchanged concerned glances but pressed on, determined to finish the course for their fallen comrade.

Finally, they crossed the finish line, breathing heavily but triumphant. Sensei Hoshi nodded in approval as they returned to the group.

"Well done," he said, his eyes scanning the class. "This course was meant to test not only your physical abilities but also your ability to adapt and think on your feet. Remember, as ninjas, we must always be prepared for the unexpected."

As the days melded into weeks, Kenji's resolve to sharpen his skills remained steadfast. He was acutely aware that every moment brought him closer to his graduation, the point at which he would evolve into a full-fledged ninja. Soon, he would be dispatched to the frontlines of a war ignited by the ambitions and pride of those in power.

With the final exams looming, Kenji devoted himself to perfecting every facet of his training. He toiled tirelessly to enhance his taijutsu, refine his chakra control, and hone his mental agility. He comprehended that the challenges ahead would test not only his physical prowess but also his capacity to strategize and adapt under duress.

During daylight hours, Kenji concentrated on his Academy studies, striving for excellence in each subject. As night fell, he stretched his body to the brink, drilling his techniques and polishing his combat abilities. His commitment never wavered, steeled by the knowledge that his life and the lives of others would soon hinge on his expertise.

As the exams drew near, the atmosphere within the Academy grew taut with tension. Students grasped the gravity of their performance, which would dictate their future roles in the ongoing struggle. For some, this understanding weighed heavily, allowing anxiety and doubt to seep in. But for Kenji, it only served to fortify his determination.

In the final weeks preceding the exams, Kenji channeled every fiber of his being into preparing for the trials ahead. His days became a whirlwind of intensive study, spirited sparring matches, and grueling training exercises. He recognized this as his opportunity to prove his mettle, to demonstrate that he was prepared to face the challenges that lay in wait.

When the day of the exams at last dawned, Kenji stood tall before his instructors, his peers, and himself, ready to display the extent of his growth. He knew there could be no turning back. It was time to lay everything on the line and fight for his future – a future he had worked relentlessly to prepare for, one that he would confront head-on as a genuine ninja amidst the crucible of battle.

The atmosphere in the meeting room was thick with tension and a sense of urgency. The Hokage, council members, elders and representatives from various clans gathered around a large wooden table, their faces etched with concern. At one end of the table, the academy headmaster and his assistant were busy reviewing the top scorers of the graduating class.

The war had been unrelenting, and the village was feeling its impact. The Hokage was acutely aware that every able-bodied ninja was needed on the front lines, and he was determined to ensure that the graduating students were properly trained and prepared before being sent out to fight.

The Hokage's voice resonated through the room, heavy with the weight of responsibility. "As you all know, we are in the middle of a war, and every able-bodied ninja is needed on the front lines. The graduating students will be assigned to different battalions at various battlefronts. However, the top scorers will have the privilege of being assigned a jonin instructor."

A council member, brows furrowed, inquired, "How many jonin can we spare?"

"None, but one will be provided," the Hokage replied in a serious tone.

Murmurs and grunts of dissatisfaction filled the room as some elders expressed their displeasure about their clan members not receiving a jonin instructor. The air was thick with tension as the representatives and elders shifted in their seats, their minds racing with concerns for their own.

Danzo interjected, his voice stern as he reminded the elders of the grim reality they faced. "Kumogakure and Kirigakure are relentlessly pushing our borders. We cannot afford to stretch our resources any thinner."

The elders exchanged uneasy glances, the gravity of Danzo's words sinking in. The Hokage, sensing the unease in the room, steered the conversation back on track with a serious tone, "Names of the top scorers?"

The academy headmaster cleared his throat and began to read out the names of the top scorers. "Kenji Izumi, Nawaki Senju, and Tomoe Uchiha."

"What about their records?" a Hyuga elder asked.

"Let's start with the top scorer," the Hokage said, as the academy headmaster began to go over the records. "Kenji Izumi, a prodigy seven years old with top scores in taijutsu, theory, navigation, and the basic three. He has exceptional control, and from what the reports show, he has basic control over water, tree, some beginner medic exercises and some control over his element Earth."

"Izumi, there are no clans that go by that name," one of the council members interrupted. "How did he manage to excel without the support of a clan?"

"His parents, Taro and Chiyo Izumi, are both orphans, and have been exceptional in their roles: Chuunin Chiyo, a medic-nin, and Chuunin Taro, a front-liner. Chuunin Taro is even up for promotion," the Jōnin Commander lazily spoke. "Clearly they've dedicated resources and training on the boy."

"Interesting," the Hokage mused, taking a puff from his pipe. "Move on. Who's next?"

The headmaster continued to discuss the records of each top scorer. The council members and clan representatives murmured amongst themselves, impressed with the talents of these young graduates. The Hokage nodded in approval. "These three will be assigned to Team One."

The academy headmaster's assistant chimed in, "The rest of the graduating class will be assigned to different teams and battalions based on their individual skills and strengths."

Jounin Yūhi, the esteemed general commander of genin and chunin training, interjected with an air of authority that commanded the room's attention. "Rest assured, the new generation of ninja will receive the dedicated training and resources they rightfully deserve. However, they will be placed under the vigilant guidance of experienced chunin, who will act as their sensei. Myself and the commanders of operation will oversee their progress, ensuring that each of them meets the high standards we expect from our young warriors."

His voice resonated with unwavering confidence, providing reassurance that the upcoming ninjas would be well-prepared to face the challenges that awaited them. The atmosphere in the room shifted slightly, as those present began to understand the depth of commitment and expertise that Jounin Yūhi and his team would bring to the training of these young shinobi.

The council members and clan representatives nodded and then proceeded to discuss the assignments amongst themselves, making sure that their own clan members were placed in the best teams and positions for their survival and success. The conversation shifted to other topics, such as secret missions, economics, trading, assassinations, and espionage. They recognized that this war would not be won by brute force alone and that they would have to be prepared for more underhanded tactics.

The Hokage listened intently to the discussion, his face etched with concern. He knew that the war was not going well and that they were running out of options. He also knew that they needed to do whatever it took to protect their village and their people.

"We must do everything in our power to ensure the safety and success of our village and our people," he declared, his voice resolute. "These students are our future, and we must give them every opportunity to succeed. We need to be prepared for any situation, and we must not hesitate to use any means necessary to protect our village."

Kenji's eyes roved the room, searching the sea of faces that reflected a melange of anticipation and anxiety. The young ninjas-to-be perched on the edge of their seats, keenly aware that their futures hung in the balance. The war raged on, and each of these students knew that this moment would decide whether they would serve as proud warriors or expendable pawns for the Hidden Leaf Village.

As names echoed through the room, one by one, a somber feeling weighed on Kenji's heart.

"Yui Hyuuga, you will be joining Battalion One, Chuunin Haruto will be your lead," the instructor's voice cut through the thick air.

Yui rose, her posture exuding confidence, and strode to the front of the classroom where Chuunin Haruto awaited her. His steely gaze left no room for doubt as he welcomed her to the team, sternly informing her of their imminent deployment to the Suna front.

With unwavering resolve, Yui nodded firmly, "Hai!"

As the number of remaining students thinned, Kenji, Nawaki, and Tomoe exchanged uneasy glances, uncertain of their fate. Nawaki whispered to the other two, "Monkey, guess we're going to get a sensei."

Kenji's mind raced, sizing up his potential teammates. Tomoe was a formidable opponent, her mastery of genjutsu and taijutsu coupled with her deadly Sharingan making her a force to be reckoned with. Nawaki, self-proclaimed rival, was a powerhouse with immense chakra reserves that dwarfed even the most talented of their peers. His lineage traced back to the first Hokage and the fallen Uzumaki clan, hinting at the prodigious talent that would soon emerge.

Kenji's thoughts were interrupted as the headmaster entered, a warm smile adorning his face. He congratulated the students on their graduation and underscored their crucial roles in the ongoing war effort.

Confusion creased Nawaki's brow as he raised his hand. "But sir, we haven't been assigned to any battalions. What are we supposed to do?"

The headmaster and instructor exchanged knowing glances before addressing the trio's concern. "You three have been selected as Team One and will train under the guidance of a jonin."

A collective gasp reverberated through the room as the students absorbed the news. Relief washed over Kenji, grateful for the headmaster's confirmation. His fellow genin stared at each other, the weight of their new responsibility settling upon them. It was a rare privilege to be trained by a jonin, one of the village's most powerful and respected ninjas, as most were out fighting the war.

Before they could probe further, the classroom door burst open, unveiling a tall, athletic figure with an unmistakable scar gracing his forehead. Clad in the traditional jonin garb – a flak jacket, forehead protector, and a katana slung across his back – his mere presence commanded the room. The air thickened with tension as he stepped inside, his movements fluid and graceful like a predator stalking its prey.

The genin watched in awe as he approached, their eyes locked onto his.

"Kenji Izumi, Nawaki Senju, Tomoe Uchiha," he intoned emotionlessly, "I will be your instructor."

His eyes blazed with determination as he spoke, leaving no doubt about the severity of the challenges ahead. "You three will be under my command. Your training will be intense, and you will be pushed to your limits."

"Meet me at Training Ground forty-four at dawn tomorrow, five o'clock sharp. Be ready to work harder than you ever have before," he ordered before pivoting and departing the room as silently as he had entered.

Scratching the back of his head, Kenji mused aloud, "Haven't I heard of that place before?" Then, as realization struck, he cried out in frustration, "Wait, what the hell was his name?"

Thanks for reading. I didn't really want to write too many chapters about his studies at the academy as I usually find them boring to read and I was struggling to write this. So I'll be moving the story on. As always, feedback - good, bad or ugly - it's appreciated. Thanks for being part of this journey!

Nawaki, as in Tsunade's little brother? A cursory search didn't bring up anything on Tomoe Uchiha though. Or are both OCs as well?

Chapter 15: “Team One’s Test”
Kenji sat alone at the entrance of Training Ground forty-four, gazing at the inky pre-dawn sky. He grumbled under his breath as he consumed his breakfast, bothered by the conspicuous absence of his teammates. They were scheduled to convene at half past four in the morning for their first training session with their Jonin sensei, but Kenji couldn't shake off a nagging sense of unease about his whole situation.

Kenji's thoughts drifted back to the moment after the graduation ceremony when the headmaster had left the room. His curiosity piqued, he approached his instructor, eager to learn more about the enigmatic Jonin who would guide them on their journey.

"Sensei," Kenji began hesitantly, "I was wondering... What's the name of our Jonin sensei? You didn't mention it during the ceremony."

The instructor glanced at Kenji, a faint smile gracing his lips. "Ah, well, you see, that's a bit of a secret. I'm not at liberty to divulge his identity just yet. You'll find out soon enough, Kenji."

"But, sensei," Kenji persisted, "how can we trust someone if we don't even know their name? What if they're not suited to teach us?"

The instructor placed a reassuring hand on Kenji's shoulder. "I understand your concerns, but you must trust the wisdom of the village. They chose this Jonin for a reason. He's an exceptional ninja, and he'll be instrumental in your growth."

Kenji frowned, still unsatisfied with the cryptic response. "Sensei, we're about to entrust our lives to this person. I believe we have the right to know who they are."

The instructor's expression softened as he looked into Kenji's determined eyes. "You're a smart and vigilant young man, Kenji, and I admire that. But there are things even I don't know, and I must respect the decisions made by those higher up. All I can tell you is that your Jonin sensei is a formidable and experienced ninja. You'll know more about him soon, and then you can make your own judgments."

Kenji nodded reluctantly, understanding that his instructor would not provide the information he sought. The mystery surrounding their Jonin sensei only fueled his anticipation, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off about the man, the way he walked, talked, the air of authority. He walked away, he couldn't help but wonder who this enigmatic figure was and what lay in store for them under his tutelage.

Kenji let out a sigh, his thoughts drifted to his teammates, both hailing from esteemed and venerated clans within the village. Nawaki was a scion of the Senju clan, while Tomoe was born into the Uchiha clan; their families bore a long-standing animosity for one another. Adding to Kenji's frustration, both Nawaki and Tomoe perpetuated the same rivalry as their clans. "Just when I think things can't get worse, the damn brats are like stubborn mules following in their clan's footsteps," he murmured to himself. "I hope they don't screw things up."

The memories of the previous day washed over Kenji, transporting him back. After the formalities with his sensei had concluded, he decided to take the initiative to foster camaraderie among his new teammates. He approached Nawaki and Tomoe, his voice filled with enthusiasm.

"Hey, guys," Kenji began, "how about we celebrate our graduation with lunch together? It'll give us a chance to get to know each other better before our training starts."

Nawaki's eyes brightened at the suggestion. "Sounds great, Kenji! Let's go to Benihana. Their maki rolls are legendary."

Tomoe's expression soured, her arms crossed defensively. "No way, Nawaki. Everyone knows the Auntie Yoko Grill has the best food in the village. We're going there."

The tension between Nawaki and Tomoe intensified, as they locked eyes, neither willing to concede. Kenji, sensing the brewing storm, attempted to mediate the situation.

"Come on, guys," he interjected, "let's not make this about your clans. We're a team now, and we should be able to enjoy a meal together without arguing."

Nawaki shot back, his voice firm, "You don't understand, Monkey. The Senju clan has been providing the village with the best food for generations. It's a matter of pride."

Tomoe scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Please, Nawaki. The Uchiha clan has been contributing to the village just as much, if not more. I won't back down on this."

Kenji, realizing that the conversation was spiraling out of control, tried one last time to diffuse the tension. "Alright, how about this? We'll go to a neutral place, somewhere that's not affiliated with either clan. That way, we can focus on getting to know each other and leave the clan rivalry behind."

Both Nawaki and Tomoe reluctantly agreed, though their expressions conveyed lingering dissatisfaction. They settled on a small ramen shop, a neutral ground where they could momentarily forget the centuries-old animoity between their clans. Over steaming bowls of ramen, the trio engaged in guarded conversation, each member cautiously probing the depths of their newfound alliance.

As the lunch came to an end, Kenji hoped that the shared meal had laid the foundation for future cooperation. He knew it would take time to break down the barriers between Nawaki and Tomoe, but he was determined to do everything in his power to ensure the success of their team.

While lost in thought, Kenji noticed Nawaki and Tomoe approaching from a distance. He steeled himself, determined to do whatever it took to ensure the team's success. He refused to let his teammates' clan rivalry compromise their chances of becoming an effective unit. Drawing a deep breath, he strode towards them, prepared to confront any challenges that lay ahead.

"Morning, Kenji," Nawaki greeted him with a friendly nod. "Morning," Kenji responded, striving to maintain a neutral tone.

Tomoe merely acknowledged Kenji's presence with a curt nod, making no effort to extend a greeting. Kenji sighed inwardly, bracing himself for a long day.

"So, where's our sensei?" Nawaki inquired, scanning their surroundings. "Not here, but probably watching us," Kenji replied. "We need to work together and devise a strategy."

Tomoe interjected thoughtfully, "Very well, let's get this sorted out already."

Nawaki scoffed, "Hah, trust someone from the Uchiha, considering the shady tactics they're known for. I wouldn't want to trust you."

Tomoe narrowed her eyes, "As if the Senju are any better. Your clan's self-righteousness is insufferable."

Kenji quickly intervened, "Tome, Nawaki! Cut it off already, put aside your clan differences while we're working and work as a team. As much as you might not like each other, we're ninja of Kohana now." He stared down the two genin. "Act like it."

An uneasy silence settled over the trio as they stood, uncertain of what to expect. Abruptly, a voice emanated from behind them, "Genin" Kenji, Nawaki, and Tomoe whirled around to find a tall, imposing figure standing before them – their jonin sensei.

He appraised them with a dispassionate stare before continuing, "Within this forest lies a tower at its center. You have three days to reach it. If you fail to make it, you'll either be dead or consigned to one of the battalions. I'll be waiting," he intoned sternly.

The three genin exchanged anxious glances, unsure how to process their sensei's words. Nawaki, ever the most vocal and expressive of the group, blurted out, "Wait! What do you mean the tower in the middle?" Desperate for clarification, he sought the jonin's attention. But it was too late – their sensei had vanished as abruptly as he had appeared, leaving them in a state of confusion and apprehension.

The Hokage sat in his dimly lit office, the soft glow from a solitary lamp casting intricate shadows on the walls as he gazed at the Hokage Mountain. The faces of the village's previous leaders were carved into the rock face, a constant reminder of the formidable legacy he had inherited. He puffed on his pipe, the sweet aroma of tobacco permeating the air, while his thoughts were consumed with the precarious situation his village faced.

Engulfed in a brutal war on all fronts, the village barely held on. He knew he needed to find a way to strike a decisive blow to turn the tide in their favor, and he believed he had devised the perfect plan.

At the core of his strategy was a new team of genin, youthful shinobi with extraordinary potential and storied backgrounds. Members of the team hailed from a prestigious clan with a long history in the village, and he saw immense promise in them. However, raw talent and lineage alone wouldn't secure victory. The Hokage knew he had to train them to the highest standard, pushing them beyond their limits and forging them into formidable weapons for the village.

As he pondered his plan, the Hokage experienced a blend of concern and determination.

"Serrow!" he called, and in an instant, a nondescript ninja wearing a painted serrow mask materialized before him. The ninja knelt respectfully, awaiting instructions.

The Hokage approached his desk and perused several files scattered across it. "You'll be going light; your role will be sensei for Sekiryuu ranked team, Designation Team One." He discussed each genin, emphasizing their abilities.

"First and foremost, we have Nawaki Senju, an exceptional prodigy with remarkable chakra reserves and potent ninjutsu potential. He has talents in both water and earth and might be able to replicate the Shodai's abilities. It's crucial to protect him or ensure that no other village can exploit his talents," the Hokage said, indicating Nawaki's file.

Next, he pointed to Tomoe Uchiha's file. "Second priority. Her Sharingan and talents in genjutsu and taijutsu make her invaluable. As with Nawaki, prioritize her protection or prevent her from falling into enemy hands."

Finally, the Hokage gestured towards Kenji Izumi's file. "Expendable. He's gifted for his age, and his talents surpass the other two. From what he's shown, he has displayed potential to be another heavy hitter for the village. While he is expendable, he is to be secured if possible."

With a serious gaze, the Hokage addressed Serrow directly. "Train them rigorously and effectively. I'll deal with the clans, but these genin must develop their strength swiftly to survive. Push them to their limits, shape them into the formidable shinobi we require. We cannot afford to waste time."

The Hokage continued, "You'll be preparing for a Mantis Operation. I'll be sending your new team to the northern front at Rice Field as bait, where you'll likely encounter Iwa and Cloud-nin. There, you'll be under Hebi's command. Fox, along with Root, will act as hunters." He took a deep draw from his pipe, the smoke curling around him. "Understood?"

"Yes, Hokage-sama," Serrow responded, rising, determination evident in the ninja's posture.

"Good, you have one month. Train them well," the Hokage instructed, dismissing Serrow with a wave of his hand. As the masked ninja vanished from the office, the Hokage returned to his seat and resumed his paperwork, hoping that the bait would be effective.

"Spread the word about the Senju boy," he commanded, his voice resolute.

"Hai," a voice from the shadows acknowledged, and the room fell silent once more as the Hokage readied himself to set his plan in motion.

Nawaki's voice wavered as the gravity of their situation sank in. "But this is the Forest of Death. Only chuunin and jonin train here."

Unfazed, Tomoe strode toward the forest, determination etched on her face. "Let's go," she declared, ready to tackle the mission head-on. Kenji, the voice of reason, attempted to restrain her. "Hold on, Tomoe. We should plan first," he urged, but she brushed him off and continued her march into the forest.

Before they entered the forest, Kenji tried to assert his authority. "Hey, Uchiha, stop!" he called, but she didn't waver. Growing exasperated, he raised his voice, "Fine, have it your way. HEY, EVIL-EYES, STOP!" Tomoe stopped abruptly, whipping around with her red eyes glaring at him. "Never insult my clan again!" she warned, her voice seething with anger.

Aware that he'd pushed her too far, Kenji quickly tried to defuse the situation. "Alright, but we need to work together, or we'll fail," he reasoned diplomatically.

Nawaki dropped to the ground, laughing, which only escalated tensions further. "I can complete this mission on my own," Tomoe retorted haughtily.

Realizing he needed to regain control before things spiraled out of hand, Kenji interjected, "Stop! We agreed yesterday that we would work together. This is a team mission, and we'll fail unless we all complete it together. Besides, the sooner we finish this, the sooner we can move on. Understood?" He tried to assert his authority.

Tomoe stared at him, and Kenji decided to emphasize his strength. "Plus, I'm stronger than both of you. I've beaten you in nearly everything at the academy. After this mission, if you can beat me, I'll let you lead. Until then, I'm in charge."

Tomoe, still fuming, didn't respond but stood there, awaiting further instructions.

"Evil-eyes! That's so good! Hahaha!" Nawaki cackled, unable to contain his amusement.

"Shut up, twig!" Tomoe snapped, her anger still palpable.

Aware that he needed to redirect their focus, Kenji sought more information about the forest before proceeding. "What can you tell us about this forest?" he asked Nawaki, seeking as much knowledge as possible.

Finally sobering up, Nawaki shared what he knew. "Well, my sister trains here sometimes," he began excitedly. "It's really dangerous and has a big reputation. There are spiders, bears, tigers, snakes, various insects, and more. My sister said it gets more dangerous the further in you go."

Taking this information to heart, Kenji mulled it over before speaking. "Alright, let's form up in the eagle-eye formation. Tomoe, you'll be in the center as our scout. Nawaki, take the left wing, and I'll cover the right. Let's go!" He corralled the genin into action.

"Hey, who made you the leader!" Nawaki interrupted Kenji.

Kenji stared down at Nawaki, "I've kicked your ass for the entire year. And, like I proposed to Tomoe, after this mission if you beat me, you can lead. Fair?"

Nawaki grumbled for a moment, "Fine."

Finally, Kenji and his teammates vanished into the forest, heading toward their objective. He could only hope they were prepared for the challenges that lay ahead. From the information gathered, the Forest of Death was notorious for being a perilous place, home to fearsome beasts. He could only hope that his teammates would remain vigilant, prepare for the worst, and work together as a team if they hoped to complete their mission successfully.

"I hope this place isn't that bad."

I can't help but be furious on Kenji's behalf that's he marked as expendable. And yes I understand that this is a universe that fundamentally runs on rules that mean 'hard men making decisions while hard' will always be justified and that some individuals legitimately have more 'value' than others according to those rules, but that doesn't mean I can't be annoyed or angry at those rules.

Its just...bah!

The story itself is good. Don't have much to say yet, though it looks like Kenji is going to have his hands full with the rivalry (outright enmity?) between the two others.

Chapter 16: “The Test” Part 1
The air was filled with the sharp, metallic whistle of shuriken slicing through the air, their deadly flight aimed at the massive swarm of insects that resembled oversized hornets. Each impact produced a sickening thud, but for every creature struck down, it seemed that two more emerged to take its place.

Kenji's heart pounded in his chest as he and his teammates found themselves being pushed back, slowly but surely becoming overwhelmed by the relentless swarm. With each step, the tension and suspense grew as the insects grew closer, their buzzing wings filling the air like a sinister symphony.

"Tomoe, we need a firewall now!" Kenji yelled, desperately trying to buy them some time. "Nawaki, ready to move right!"

Nawaki grumbled, sweat beading on his brow as he fended off the insects. "We wouldn't be in this mess if you'd listened to me!"

Tomoe smirked as she formed hand signs, her eyes narrowed with determination. "A Senju shouldn't be so reckless, Nawaki. Just watch and learn."

With a surge of flames, Tomoe created a barrier of fire that scorched the swarm, momentarily halting their advance. But the reprieve was short-lived, as the insects quickly regrouped and resumed their assault.

"Now, move right!" Kenji commanded, launching three shuriken with tags attached in different directions. As they moved, the tags detonated, and a giant cloud of smoke engulfed the area, obscuring their escape.

The team weaved through the trees, adrenaline pumping as they evaded the relentless pursuit of the swarm. Their breaths came in ragged gasps, each of them acutely aware of the constant threat nipping at their heels. The concern grew over Kenji with every passing second, leaving them to wonder if they would ever find respite from the onslaught.

As they finally gained enough distance to catch their breath, Kenji let out a sigh of relief and asked, "Is everyone alright?"

"I'm fine," Nawaki snapped, still annoyed. "Just because Tomoe got lucky doesn't mean she's better."

Tomoe scoffed, "Luck? Please. That was pure skill."

Kenji stared at the two for a second, frustrated with their constant bickering, but he had no time to reprimand them as they team sensed an ominous presence. A powerful gust of wind hurtled towards them, and they immediately employed their respective techniques to evade the sudden attack.

However, their troubles were far from over. As they regained their footing, a pack of tigers emerged from the shadows, surrounding them.

Tomoe's eyes gleamed with excitement, "Finally, a real challenge!"

Nawaki cracked his knuckles, "Just don't slow us down, princess."

The leader of the pack, a large grey tiger with piercing yellow eyes, let out a deafening roar, signaling the attack. Kenji, Tomoe, and Nawaki were caught off guard, but they quickly sprang into action. "Dragon formation, now!" Kenji shouted, taking the lead as the Dragon's Head. Tomoe took the right side as the Dragon's Right Claw, and Nawaki took the left side as the Dragon's Left Claw. This way, they could cover all angles and protect each other.

The tigers charged at the young ninjas, snarling, clawing and snapping their jaws. Kenji, Tomoe, and Nawaki maintained their formation, ready for the assault. As the first wave of tigers lunged toward them, they leaped into action.

Kenji, focused and calm, shouted, "We've faced worse than this! Stay in formation and don't over extend." As he deftly struck at the pack leader's legs with his kunai, attempting to immobilize it.

Tomoe, spoke back with gleam in her eyes, "These mangy beasts won't stand a chance against us!" She unleashed her fire ninjutsu, creating a barrier of flames to injure any tiger that dared approach her.

Nawaki, boasted as he charged forward, "Watch this, you two!" He swiped his leg with immense force, knocking one of the tigers out cold with a single blow. He then used his ninjutsu to manipulate the earth, forming a barrier on the left flank of the formation.

The pack leader, however, was not to be underestimated. It let out a roar and countered with a powerful gust of wind, blowing away Tomoe's barrier of fire and catching her off guard. She was thrown back hard against a tree behind her, falling unconscious as she landed with her head taking most of the impact.

Kenji, with concern in his voice, called out, "Tomoe's down! Nawaki, cover her! I'll draw there attention, prepare for retreat."

Nawaki, gritting his teeth, replied, "Got it!" He quickly performed hand seals and another earthen wall rose from the ground covering Tomoe.

Kenji continued to strike at the pack leader, trying to immobilize it. The battle raged on, with the Nawaki defending off the relentless attacks of the tigers. They dodged, weaved, and struck back with every ounce of their strength.

In the chaos, Kenji prepared a trap for the beast. As the pack leader lunged to bite Kenji's head off, he replaced himself with a piece of wood with an explosive tag attached. The resulting explosion killing the pack leader and some of the tigers. Kenji then deployed a smoke bomb, disorienting the remaining pack, allowing the team to escape.

"Hurry, we have to get out of here!" Kenji urged, his voice strained.

Nawaki nodded, scooping up Tomoe's unconscious body. "Just lead the way, Kenji."

As they retreated from the battlefield, Kenji and Nawaki exchanged a quick glance, acknowledging their victory. They made their way deeper into the forest knew that they couldn't afford to be distracted – they had to find a safe place to tend to Tomoe's injuries.

Kenji led the way while Nawaki carefully carried Tomoe through the dense forest. Her body was limp on his back. Kenji searched around and finally found a small clearing that seemed safe enough to rest and tend to her injuries. He instructed Nawaki to lay her down on the ground and keep guard of their perimeter while he checked her over.

Placing his hand on her body, Kenji closed his eyes to focus on his chakra. He activated a medical jutsu that allowed him to scan the patients condition that he learned from Chiyo. As he performed the jutsu, he mumbled to himself, describing the extent of her injuries.

"She has a mild traumatic brain injury, likely resulting in her loss of consciousness. There's also a hairline fracture on one of her ribs, and signs of contusions and muscle strain in her shoulder and back. Hmm, she must of reinforced her body before she hit tree but not enough."

Kenji opened his pack and began to treat Tomoe with expert precision. He applied a topical analgesic to her shoulder and back, which he explained would help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. He then skillfully wrapped a compression bandage around her torso to provide support for her fractured rib, ensuring it was snug but not too tight to hinder breathing.

As Kenji worked, Nawaki couldn't help but ask questions. "How did you learn to heal like this, Kenji? Do you want to be a healer in the future?"

Kenji responded without looking up from his task, "It's just a skill I picked up along the way, I learned it from my mum. It's useful to know, especially for situation like this. Maybe when my control is better I'll start attempting harder techniques."

Nawaki curiosity piqued, "Your a weird one Kenji, how did you get so strong without being from a clan? And you act like the older members of my clan all the time, why is that?"

Kenji paused for a moment before answering, "Hmmm... I guess I train harder than most, I don't want to be a weakling, at the mercy of others. You know, I've had to grow up fast, especially from my accident when I was three. That really changed me, so I started learning as much as I could to get strong. And, I just want to be able to protect those I care about you know."

Clapping his together, "Alright, let's get Tomoe up." Kenji then grabbed some sniffing salts and waved it under Tomoe's nose, bringing her back to consciousness. Her eyes snapped open, and she grimaced in pain, frustration evident on her face.

"What happened?" Tomoe growled, clenching her fists and her body being tense.

Nawaki couldn't resist the opportunity to jab at her. "You got your ass handed to you, that's what," he retorted smugly.

Kenji shot Nawaki a stern glare. "Not now, Nawaki. Go cover our position. I'll take care of Tomoe."

Rolling his eyes, Nawaki leaped and moved to a different position covering them as Kenji tended to Tomoe. "You're fine, only minor injury to your chest, shoulder and back. I did what I could and you only need to see a med-nin to get it fixed up."

Tomoe's face contorted in anger and frustration. "I failed," she muttered. Kenji placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, "Nah, your still breathing, so your still good. Just remember Tomoe, we all make mistakes, the important thing is that we learn from them and come out stronger."

She stared at him for a moment and nodded thinking over what Kenji just said. He then looked up at where Nawaki was positioned, who had been standing guard. "Oi Nawaki, we're going to stay low and give Tomoe some time to recover."

"I don't need to rest. I can keep going." Tomoe spoke with frustration, and attempted to protest.

Nawaki chimed in, "Yeah, we can't just sit around here, Kenji. We have a mission to complete."

Kenji shook his head, his expression firm. "Listen, both of you. The medicine needs time to work, we risk running around the forest with an injured member. Let's stay low for a bit, we still have a few days before we're needed at the tower."

Nawaki rolled his eyes, "Alright, But only for a few hours."

Tomoe scowled, but eventually, she sighed. "Fine, Kenji. We'll rest."

The team then started two set up an alarm perimeter, Nawaki and Tomoe started to bicker, their rivalry started to flare up. "Stupid twig, the village wouldn't last without the Uchiha clam," Tomoe claimed.

Nawaki scoffed, "As if Princess! The Senju clan is far superior in every way! Even our sweets are better than the Uchiha's."

Tomoe raised an eyebrow, "Are you serious? Uchiha clan's dango's are legendary. Everyone in the village knows it."

"Oh, please!" Nawaki countered, "Senju clan's taiyaki is what everyone talks about. You can't beat that!"

Kenji was glad to see that they were starting to calm down, and he couldn't help but believe that his luck was changing even if the two idiots were bickering.

'Hopefully the rest of the journey to the tower is a non-event.'

Feedback - good, bad or ugly - it's appreciated. Thanks for being part of this journey!

P.S. Check out Neon Dystopia: A Cyberpunk Odyssey, it's a Cyberpunk 2077 inspired story that has gamer elements and it's SeIf Insert. I kind of got drawn to the game/some fictions and decided to write something, only just started but it seems like people like it so I'll probably write that as well.

I've started really enjoying the story a lot more during this genin test. Feel so bad for Kenji though he's forced to try and referee his peers who both think of themselves as better than him.

Chapter 17: “The Test” Part 2
The sun blazed overhead, casting its harsh light upon the dense Forest of Death. As a jounin hidden observed the genin intently, carefully monitoring their progress. Assigning them to reach the tower at the center of the forest would test their cohesion and skillset, but so far, their progress had been far from satisfactory. As he scrutinized their struggle, he couldn't help but feel a pang of disappointment. Their lack of teamwork and coordination was putting them in danger, and their numerous mistakes could have severe consequences in the upcoming war.

His gaze shifted to Nawaki Senju, a young prodigy endowed with a robust foundation, abundant chakra reserves, and a natural talent for earth and water techniques. With his potential to replicate the legendary First Hokage's Mokuton, Nawaki could prove to be an invaluable asset to the village. However, his impulsive and reckless nature posed a significant weakness that demanded attention. The fact that the Senju clan elders had not yet rectified this issue was a telling sign of the clan's current condition.

Next, his eyes fell upon Tomoe Uchiha, the talented Uchiha kunoichi possessing a natural affinity for fire techniques and advanced prowess in her clan's distinct genjutsu and taijutsu. Activating the first stage of the Sharingan was impressive, but her recklessness had put her safety at risk during the exercise. Her arrogance and bloodthirstiness, while typical traits among her clan, could lead to her downfall without the strength to support them. Given time and some adjustments to her temperament, Tomoe had the potential to become a crucial asset to the village.

Lastly, his focus shifted to Kenji Izumi, the youngest and most accomplished member of the group. He possessed a remarkable talent for taijutsu, mastering the Flowing Leaf style—an uncommon technique in the village. Moreover, he demonstrated a mastery of basic ninjutsu and genjutsu, skills typically seen in genin on the cusp of promotion. His substitution jutsu, however, was developed to an extraordinary degree that was previously thought unattainable. Despite his youth, limited chakra output, and the obstacles he faced, Kenji had risen to the top, distinguishing himself from the others. Unfortunately, time was not on his side, and he would need to utilize all his resources to endure the rigorous challenges their squad was about to encounter. Time would reveal whether young Izumi would become another formidable asset for the village.

Nakamura knew that for his squad to stand a chance of surviving the upcoming mission on the northern front, they needed to be stronger. Silently, he resolved to intensify their training, pushing them to their limits and beyond. He would not rest until they were prepared for the missions ahead. Without uttering a word, Nakamura vanished into the shadows, determined to get his squad ready for the challenges that lay before them.

Kenji sat their keeping watch, while a nagging sensation gnawed at him. Something felt amiss in the ominous forest. He had been tasked with watch duties while his two fellow team members rested—especially Tomoe, who was recuperating from an injury sustained during the skirmish. Their mission to reach the tower at the center of the forest was becoming more fraught with dangerous encounters with various beasts that tested their teams co-ordination and skills.

Deciding to follow his hunch, Kenji focused intently, as he attempted to use his rudimentary sensing technique to detect any potential threats. After some time he detected the presence of an insect-like creature. Swiftly, he signaled Nawaki and Tomoe to awaken and prepare for battle, sending chakra to a wire.

As the image of the creature solidified in Kenji's mind, he realized it was a massive spider. 'Damn it! Spiders, of all things,' he thought, shuddering. Opting to act as bait, he waited for the spider to approach before springing his trap.

A large amount of water fang-shaped stream suddenly flew behind him as it slammed into the spider, knocking it from its perch. Nawaki had launched the initial attack, which soon was followed with Tomoe, as she unleashed a continuous torrent of fire that engulfed the enormous arachnid.

"We need to move now!" Kenji shouted as he detected more spiders making their way, with his kunai out of his holster, ready for any unseen threats.

"Crap, I need to grab my pack." as Nawaki sprinted back towards his resting spot.

"No time to pack, just go!" Kenji added, hurling an explosive kunai towards the treetops where additional spiders were descending.

Nawaki gazed upward, a mixture of horror and awe etched across his face as he beheld the swarm of colossal spiders leaping towards them. Kenji's kunai embedded itself in one of the creatures, detonating upon impact.

"Move, Nawaki! Tomoe, lead the way!" Kenji barked, as they assumed formation—Tomoe in front, Kenji in the middle, and Nawaki bringing up the rear. They dashed as fast as they could, desperate to escape the spider-infested lands they had unwittingly stumbled upon without detecting their presence.

They hastened their retreat from the spider's looming above, as they escaped using every bit of their physical and mental capabilities, darting through the treacherous forest. Kenji's heart raced as his sharp eyes scanned the surrounding wilderness, his senses on high alert for any potential threats, aware that the slightest misstep could mean the end for all of them.

Tomoe, despite her injury, kept pace leading her comrades, using her strength with the sharingan, using genjutsu to distract and disorient any beasts that dared to cross their path. Her quick thinking and reflexes gave them the much-needed seconds to forge ahead.

As they were making their way through the dense forest, they suddenly heard a loud rustling sound behind them. They spun around and saw a massive centipede, as thick and wide as the tree's surrounding them, charging towards them.

"We have to move, now!" Kenji shouted, grabbing both Tomoe and Nawaki by the arm and pulling them along with him.

The trio darted through the undergrowth, dodging trees and leaping over fallen logs as the centipede continued to pursue them. Kenji's pulse pounded in his ears as he led the way, his eyes fixed on their escape route.

"Tomoe, use your genjutsu to distract it!" Kenji called out, glancing back over his shoulder.

Tomoe nodded and closed her eyes, focusing her chakra. When she opened her eyes again, she raised her hands and shouted, "Kai!" A shimmering light appeared in front of the centipede, blinding and disorienting it.

"Good work!" Kenji yelled, grabbing a kunai with a tag and hurling it at a nearby tree.

With timed precision, the tag detonated, causing a massive branches from the tree to crash down onto the centipede. It let out a high-pitched screech, thrashing around as it tried to free itself from the debris.

"Nawaki, clone, I need you to lead it away from us!" Kenji shouted, grabbing another kunai.

Nawaki nodded, concentrating his chakra as water emerged from the ground, taking on a human shape before transforming into a likeness of Nawaki—a water clone. The clone sprinted towards the centipede and then into the forest, effectively luring the creature away from the team.

"Keep moving," Kenji said, panting as he caught his breath. "We can't let it catch up to us."

The trio continued to run, pushing themselves to their limits as they fled from the centipede. But as they ran, they encountered other beasts and creatures along the way. They used their skills and teamwork to avoid or fight off each of these obstacles, but the journey was still grueling and exhausting.

"We need to rest," Tomoe panted, leaning against a tree as she tried to catch her breath. "We've been going non-stop."

"I know," Kenji said, glancing back the way they had come. "But we have to keep moving. We're getting closer to the tower, and we need to get away from these damn beasts."

However, Kenji looked at his team members, and seeing their exhaustion and tiredness, he couldn't help but reassess the situation. "We'll rest. Let's find somewhere safe, if there is such a thing in this forest."

The group found a hidden hollow within one of the trees around them, a place to recuperate.

"Alright, rest up. We'll rotate every two hours. I'll take the middle shift."

Time was up, and despite the scratches, bruises, and exhaustion, Kenji knew that reaching the tower was their only chance to succeed in their mission and find some semblance of safety. Glancing at the other two, who were in a similar condition to his, he knew that they could keep going; their chakra pulsed in a rushed but steady rhythm.

"Time to move. It shouldn't be much further. We'll do our best to avoid as much as we can, and the sooner we reach the tower, the sooner we get some real rest."

"Let's go!"

The two nodded and silently followed Kenji's lead.

As the team journeyed on, and for the last few hours, they encountered no obstacles.

'At last, a moment of peace,' Kenji thought to himself as they continued on their journey towards the tower after their encounter with the giant centipede. "This cursed world with its overgrown wildlife is a nightmare. I can't wait to get out of this death trap."

He leaped down from a branch onto the ground, following Tomoe as she chose their path.

Suddenly, they found themselves confronted by an enormous bear that emerged from the dense bushes, which had concealed its colossal body. The beast unleashed a thunderous roar, baring its razor-sharp teeth and menacing claws.

"Damn it! Flanking maneuver," Kenji warned, his hand reaching for his weapons pouch.

"Tomoe, distract it. Nawaki, barrage it with me."

As the bear let out another deafening roar and prepared a powerful swipe at the group, Tomoe quickly cast a genjutsu to distract the bear, making it temporarily disoriented. Kenji and Nawaki seized this opportunity, launching a barrage of shuriken and kunai at the beast.

Nawaki swiftly performed hand seals, and water spewed from his mouth. He launched a large sphere of water towards the bear. The sphere collided with the bear, dousing the massive creature in water and knocking it off balance.

As the bear roared in anger, trying to regain its footing, Tomoe was ready. She cast another genjutsu, making the bear see multiple copies of the genin. Confused and disoriented, the bear swung its massive paws wildly, hitting the illusions.

Kenji dodged the bear's strikes with his agility and speed. He had studied the movements of the beast and knew that the bear had a weakness in its midsection. He quickly closed in, striking the bear with a precise and powerful kunai strike.

"Nawaki, now!" Kenji shouted, and Nawaki unleashed his earth ninjutsu, creating spikes of rock that impaled the bear.

Despite being injured, the bear remained dangerous and powerful. It turned its rage towards Kenji, who was now within range of its deadly claws. Kenji jumped back, narrowly avoiding the bear's swipe.

"Tomoe, wall of fire!" Kenji yelled. He watched as Tomoe performed the hand seals for the jutsu. Determination shone in her eyes as she focused on the massive bear in front of them. The bear was intimidating and dangerous, but Tomoe refused to back down as it approached.

Inhaling deeply, she launched the jutsu, creating a wall of fire before them. The flames rose, illuminating the dark forest and blocking the bear's path. The bear roared in anger, but it quickly retreated from the wall of fire.

Kenji knew that the bear wasn't afraid of the flames but instinctively avoided the wall of fire. This gave him and Nawaki a moment to plan their next move.

With the bear temporarily distracted, Kenji and Nawaki launched a final attack, striking the bear with their shuriken and kunai. The bear roared in pain and anger, but the two genin persisted. They continued their assault, gradually weakening the bear until it finally collapsed, defeated.

"That was close," Nawaki said, panting heavily. "But, how did we miss a bear that big? It was huge!"

"Dammit, Nawaki." Kenji groaned. He was impressed and glad that their teamwork was improving, but they couldn't resist sniping at each other.

"As if you would've done any better with your poor eyesight, Twig!" Tomoe retorted.

Hoping to end the bickering, Kenji interjected, "Let's keep moving. We have a mission to complete."

Kenji and his team emerged from the dense foliage of the forest, and a majestic tower stood before them, its wooden structure and tile roof reaching skyward. The deep maroon walls contrasted sharply with the pastel white roof tiles that cascaded down each floor to the pinnacle. The imposing tower seemed to stretch up into the sky, dwarfing the surrounding forest. Kenji couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as he gazed upon the tower, its grandeur leaving him breathless.

"We made it," Nawaki exhaled, his voice a blend of exhaustion, relief and awe.

"Yeah, but we're not out of the woods yet," Kenji replied, scanning the clearing for any signs of danger. "We need to be careful. We don't know what's waiting for us at the tower."

Tomoe nodded, her face determined. "We'll be fine," she assured, her voice steady.

After an exhausting two-day journey through the perilous Forest of Death, they had finally arrived at the tower. Along the way, they had encountered and evaded a multitude of fearsome and lethal creatures. Kenji's heart raced in his chest, his thoughts consumed with anticipation of the challenges that still lay ahead.

'Is this it? Are there any traps? Will there be more damn overgrown animals that can kill superhuman kids?'

Aware of the forest perilous nature, teeming with powerful and deadly creatures, Kenji remained on high alert.

As they neared the tower, Kenji addressed his teammates, "Alright, let's head inside. But be cautious; we don't know what we'll find in there."

"Right," Nawaki agreed, scanning the surroundings.

Tomoe nodded in agreement as they headed towards the entrance of the tower.

Upon entering, they made their way to the main hall, where a giant scroll adorned the wall, inscribed with an ancient script. The meaning of the text eluded them, leaving them all perplexed.

Kenji addressed his teammates, suggesting, "Let's take a break here for a bit." Turning to Tomoe, he added, "I'll tend to your injury so we can explore further soon. Stay alert, everyone."

As they sat on the floor, their gaze fixed on the mysterious text, the trio engaged in a discussion about its meaning, while Kenji began patching up his teammates.

"What do you think it means?" Tomoe inquired.

Muttering the text, Nawaki replied, "If qualities of heaven are your desire, acquire wisdom and knowledge to take your mind higher. I'm not sure, but it seems like it's discussing the importance of training both the mind and the body."

Kenji looked up from his work. "Right, it suggests that wisdom and knowledge are as crucial as physical training."

Tomoe pondered for a moment. "So, it's emphasizing the need to be well-rounded."

Nawaki nodded. "Exactly. It also mentions a 'secret way' that will guide us."

Having finished tending to Tomoe's shoulder, Kenji stood up. "Let's take some time to reflect on this. We'll explore the tower shortly."

The three genin spent some time recuperating and attempting to decode the script on the scroll. They analyzed it repeatedly, striving to grasp its meaning. Eventually, they concluded that the script emphasized the importance of balance – the need to harmonize physical training with intellectual and spiritual growth.

Feeling enlightened and somewhat refreshed after a brief rest, the team set out to explore the tower. They ascended the winding stairs, examining the peculiar, mostly empty rooms they encountered, many of which were designed for training. As they continued their ascent, they searched for their sensei, who they believed was somewhere within the tower.

At last, they reached the top of the tower, stepping onto the balcony. Expecting to find their sensei or a stunning view of the forest and village, they were instead met with a sight they could not have anticipated: the village of Kohana, burning in the distance.

"What the...?" Kenji stammered, his voice trailing off as he stared in shock at the scene unfolding before him.

Nawaki and Tomoe appeared equally stunned. They knew this was a grave situation, that something terrible was happening in the village.

"Fuck!"

Oh! Part of the test? They've been in a genjutsu the entire time? No, probably they haven't been in the genjutsu long, there would definitely be small errors and inconsistencies in their reality. Maybe they just got put in one, or the team's luck is well and truly awful lol.

If it is a real attack, wonder what caused it. I had an insane idea, it's a time traveler here to do some absurd shit. There's probably a higher chance of me winning the lottery than that happening lol.

Chapter 18: "Sensei"
Amidst the swirling smoke and flickering embers, Kenji, Tomoe, and Nawaki stood on the balcony of the tower in training ground forty-four, their eyes filled with disbelief as they watched their beloved village, Kohana, engulfed in flames. Kenji glanced at Tomoe, who shared his sense of shock, while Nawaki was on the verge of exploding with anger.

"Take deep breaths, Nawaki," Kenji said calmly. "Tomoe, find your focus. Our sensei isn't here; it's up to us to take action. He's probably dealing with the situation right now."

Slowly regaining his composure, Nawaki spoke with urgency, "We can't just stand here and do nothing. We're ninjas now! We need to help!"

"Calm down, Nawaki," Kenji replied, trying to soothe his team. "We need to think of a plan first. If we go out there blind, we'll be blindsided." His voice was steady, but his heart thumped with urgency.

Tomoe nodded. "So, what's the plan?"

"First things first," Kenji said, thinking quickly. "We need to get a closer look, gather information. Maybe we'll find someone who can provide more guidance or orders."

"How about we just attack anyone who's not from the village!" Nawaki yelled.

"Calm down, Nawaki!" Kenji spoke authoritatively. "You'll just die accomplishing nothing by jumping into the fire."

"We need to do something," Tomoe said, her Sharingan activated. "I know of a hideout near the grounds. We can gather intel there."

"Alright, let's go," Nawaki urged the team.

As the trio prepared to leave the tower, Kenji paused, a nagging sensation gnawing at the back of his mind. 'Something's wrong.' Focusing his chakra into his core, he wondered if he might be trapped in a genjutsu. He slowly flooded his system, and suddenly he felt a foreign chakra intertwining with his own. 'Shit! How the hell didn't I feel that?' Realizing he had been under an illusion, Kenji tried to keep his composure and remain inconspicuous.

Suddenly, with the illusion fading away, he felt cold steel pressed against his neck, and with a flicker of his eyes, he saw Tomoe in a similar predicament, evidently having broken free of the genjutsu as well. But Nawaki was still under the trap, desperately searching for an escape. Kenji spotted a potted plant near the entrance. Silently, he cast the substitution jutsu, and with the last channel merged, he swiftly switched places with the plant.

Just as he was about to draw his shuriken to neutralize his attacker, a powerful force slammed him onto the balcony floor, knocking the wind out of him. Groaning in pain, Kenji saw Tomoe and Nawaki pinned down with kunai at their throats.

'Damn, I'm screwed!'

"You are now dead. Genin Izumi, Uchiha, Senju," a deep, authoritative voice spoke above him. Kenji recognized their sensei's voice and couldn't believe it. "You disappoint me, genin. You would have been dead the moment you entered this tower. In time, I will turn you into real shinobi."

Kenji couldn't fathom how he had been ensnared in the genjutsu for so long, unable to discern the illusion from reality. He felt vulnerable, humbled by the gap between his abilities and true mastery.

Nawaki, ever the bold one, demanded, "Did we pass, and who are you, sensei?"

"Unfortunately, you did. Jonin Kazuo Hagoromo," their sensei replied coolly.

Before the young ninjas could respond, two clones materialized in front of them. One approached Kenji, the other Tomoe. "Follow me," Kenji's clone instructed, leaping off the balcony toward the forest. Without hesitation, Kenji pursued, his heart still racing from the revelation of their sensei's power and his own inadequacy.

As they followed their respective clones, Kenji couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. They had passed their sensei's test, but it had also revealed the vast gap between their skills and what was expected of true shinobi.

The towering, fenced-off gates loomed before the genin as they neared the exit of the infamous Training Ground forty-four. Kenji cast a sidelong glance at his teammates, noticing the exhaustion in their eyes and the slight lag in their movements. The usual banter was absent as they trudged toward the gates.

Tomoe broke the silence, her voice tinged with relief and weariness, "I'm just glad to be out of that place."

Nawaki nodded in agreement, "Me too. I never want to set foot in there again."

The gate guard silently acknowledged their passage, and the three crossed the threshold, grateful to leave the treacherous training ground behind. As they stepped out, their tense muscles relaxed, and hushed conversation resumed.

"I knew our sensei would be strict, but I never expected training to be this brutal," Nawaki admitted.

Kenji winced while flexing his sore muscles, "Yeah, I've never experienced anything like this before. I thought I was prepared for tough training, but this was on another level."

"Precisely," Tomoe chimed in, her eyes distant as she recalled the grueling exercises. "Remember that drill where we had to balance on one hand while deflecting kunai thrown at us?"

Nawaki shuddered at the memory, "That was insane. And when we had to climb that steep cliff with those damn bees! And only using our chakra to cling to the rocks... I didn't think I'd make it."

Focusing on the prospect of rest, Kenji announced, "I'll head back to my place. See you guys in two at the main gates."

With that, Kenji concentrated his chakra and performed the necessary hand seals. As he executed the body flicker jutsu, a whirlwind of leaves swirled where he had stood, and he disappeared from sight. Propelled through the village at breakneck speed, he grinned to himself, "I love this jutsu."

"Serrow," Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi spoke in a hushed tone, however his voice reverberating through the dimly lit room.

In a blink of an eye, the ANBU operative materialized, kneeling respectfully before the him. "Hokage-sama," he acknowledged, his voice firm and resolute.

"Report on the status of your team," the Hokage demanded, his gaze fixed on Serrow.

"My team is green, Hokage-sama. As long as nothing out of the ordinary occurs, they will complete their mission," Serrow responded.

Danzo Shimura, a formidable figure concealed in the shadows, shifted in his seat. "We have assets in place," he declared, his voice icy and calculating. "Iwa and Kumo have taken the bait and are advancing toward Rice. The situation is favorable."

Hiruzen leaned back in his chair, his eyes narrowing. "Our teams are directing Iwa and Kumo into conflict," he explained tensely. "Anticipate capture squads to diverge – A-rank, perhaps even S-rank. Hunters will shadow and handle any A-rank and above threats, while your squad will deal with the rest. Hebi will rendezvous with you at section kakugyou on the front lines of Rice."

Danzo handed Serrow a scroll. "This is your route to Rice," he instructed, his voice ominous. "You'll be travelling in grey state."

"Understood," Serrow affirmed, clenching his hand into a fist.

"The fate of our village hinges on the outcome of this war," Danzo declared, his eyes alight with resolve. "We must brace ourselves for any eventuality. Serrow, your team will be crucial to the success of this battle. Do not let the village down."

Serrow drew in a deep breath, fortifying himself for the trials that awaited. As a Konoha shinobi, he stood ready to tackle any hurdles that arose. Unwavering in his determination, he would spare no effort to guarantee the triumph of his mission.

"Hai."

Kenji staggered to the couch and collapsed onto it, his body aching from the relentless training he'd endured. "Unbelievable," he muttered, shaking his head. "If I were still on Earth, I'd be long gone by now. No one in the military or athletics could have withstood this."

His thoughts turned to his teammates and sensei, Jonin Kazuo Hagoromo. The man was a master in the art of torment, and the training sessions under his guidance were an inferno of suffering. Kenji shuddered at the memories of the grueling drills, pushing their bodies and minds to the edge of breaking. "He's a sadist," he whispered, but despite the pain, Kenji knew the training had shaped him into the warrior he had become.

His mind wandered back to the time he had spent with his team and sensei, reliving the torturous training that Kazuo subjected them to and shuddering at the memories.

"Kenji," Kazuo's voice interrupted his thoughts, "We only have three weeks to bring you up to standard. You need to master chakra control and elevate your current abilities. Have you learned water walking?"

"Yes, sensei," Kenji replied, striving to maintain a steady voice.

Kazuo guided him to a nearby river, the sound of rushing water permeating the air. "Show me," he ordered.

Taking a deep breath, Kenji stepped onto the water, sensing his chakra flow through him as he strode across the river's surface. Kazuo observed, expressionless, but Kenji detected a glimmer of approval in his eyes.

"Good," Kazuo acknowledged, tossing two scrolls at Kenji. "The Body Flicker Technique and the Mystic Healing Palm technique. Study them diligently. You'll require both in the field."

"You have three days to grasp the basics of the Body Flicker technique before we proceed," he stated firmly.

Kenji stared at the two scrolls wondering what he got himself into, 'how in the hell am I going to learn these in three days.' As they headed back into the tower.

"Hell yeah, I've got it!" Kenji shouted, standing in an open space in his courtyard, surveying the pile of dirt he had skillfully molded into various shapes using mere hand movements. He was ecstatic; his sensei's rigorous training had ultimately paid off.

"Would you look at that!" Kenji marveled, gazing at the earthen block he manipulated using his chakra control. 'Haha, it's like divine power is coursing through me.' He laughed with exhilaration, feeling akin to a superhero.

Kenji was experiencing what it was like to be a bona fide ninja, similar to those he had admired in the anime. His sensei's teachings had finally clicked, and he was seamlessly controlling his element, bending the earth to his will. The adrenaline rush was intoxicating, and he was eager to discover what other skills he could master.

'And to think, I used to believe sensei was a sadistic bastard,' Kenji mused to himself, grinning with newfound respect for the old man's approach. 'Turns out he was merely pushing me to reach my full potential. Damn, I hated the training that man put me through.'

Kenji sat cross-legged in the training room of the tower, his body tense under the watchful eye of Jonin Kazuo. The Genin had been practicing for hours, striving to perfect his chakra control skills. Kazuo observed his movements critically, assessing his progress.

"You have a large yin reserve," Jonin Kazuo stated coldly, his piercing gaze scrutinizing Kenji. "This might simplify your training in some aspects, but it will complicate it in others. Learn to balance and control your chakra, or you'll be utterly ineffective."

A fleeting smirk crossed Kenji's face, although he knew better than to bask in even the slightest hint of praise from Kazuo, notorious for his severe training methods.

"Begin with chakra manipulation," Kazuo commanded. "Focus your chakra into your hands and attempt to control its flow."

Kenji obeyed, shutting his eyes and concentrating on the energy coursing through his body. He honed in on his hands, envisioning the chakra as a stream of water he could manipulate and guide.

Much to his astonishment, Kenji discovered that he could effortlessly control the chakra, directing its flow through his fingers to move objects.

"Acceptable," Jonin Kazuo acknowledged brusquely. "Now, let us proceed to chakra channeling. This technique is more advanced, but I expect you to master it swiftly."

Kenji listened attentively as his sensei explained chakra channeling with an icy demeanor, knowing that his sensei expected nothing less than perfection. As Kazuo spoke, Kenji felt a mixture of anticipation and anxiety, realizing the difficulty of the technique and the high expectations placed upon him.

"Begin by visualizing your body's chakra pathways, like a network of interconnected channels," Kazuo commanded coldly. "Focus your chakra at a central point, typically your dantian or hara, located just below your navel."

Closing his eyes, Kenji concentrated on his dantian, sensing the energy within him. He envisioned his chakra pathways, picturing the intricate network throughout his body. As he focused, he felt a mounting pressure to perform at his peak, fearing Kazuo's disapproval if he failed to master the technique.

From his central point, Kenji attempted to guide his chakra through the pathways, directing it towards his feet. The energy moved sluggishly, and his control wavered. Anxiety and frustration clouded his thoughts, disrupting his focus and intensifying his fear of disappointing Kazuo.

Kazuo's stern voice cut through Kenji's struggle. "Remember, Kenji, successful chakra channeling requires balance and control. Your progress is slow, and I expect you to improve rapidly. Do not waste my time with mediocrity."

Kenji inhaled deeply, steadying his nerves and refocusing his efforts. He knew that Kazuo's faith in his potential came with high expectations, and he couldn't afford to falter. He tried again, concentrating on his dantian and guiding his chakra through his body with increased precision. This time, the energy flowed more smoothly, and Kenji felt a small measure of relief.

As they practiced together, Kenji labored to channel his chakra to different parts of his body, striving to meet Kazuo's strict standards. With each attempt, his control improved incrementally, but the weight of Kazuo's expectations never lessened.

He trained for hours, channeling his chakra through various parts of his body and struggling to control its flow.

"Show me some basic manipulation of your earth chakra," Kazuo demanded, his tone unyielding.

Kenji nodded, his eyes shut as he concentrated on his chakra flow. He visualized the earth element as a deep, solid force within him. With a controlled, fluid motion, he directed the earth chakra to his hands, feeling the element's power surging within.

Kazuo observed critically as Kenji opened his eyes, his hands now alive with earth chakra. The Genin's control was noteworthy, given his age and talent.

"Acceptable, Kenji," Kazuo conceded, a faint hint of approval in his voice. "Continue practicing and ensure your progress remains unyielding. You have the potential to excel in both ninjutsu and medical ninjutsu."

"Damn it all," Kenji grumbled to himself as he fumbled through a sequence of chakra exercises in his courtyard training area. He had been practicing for hours, endeavoring to master the healing palm technique taught by his sensei, yet he still struggled to execute it properly.

"Control is key," Kenji muttered, scowling at his unsteady hands. He took a deep breath to calm himself and focused his energy inward. Closing his eyes, he pictured his chakra as a warm, flowing river and began to manipulate it with exact movements, just as Kazuo had demonstrated.

Abruptly, he felt a tingling sensation in his hands and opened his eyes to see them glowing with a soft, green light. He laughed in delight, experiencing a sense of satisfaction he had never felt before. He had accomplished it!

"Control is the essence," he whispered, smiling at his newfound confidence. "Channel your chakra, concentrate on the healing palm's movements, and utilize your yin reserves to power the technique. Above all, maintain control." He inhaled deeply and sighed. "I hope I won't have to use this on anyone else."

"Compose yourself," Kazuo ordered firmly as Kenji marveled at his sensei's healing palm technique on a wolf. The older ninja effortlessly healed even the gravest injuries, and Kenji was in awe of his mastery.

"Show me what you've learned," Kazuo challenged, injuring another wolf under a genjutsu. "Attempt to heal those wounds. Do not fail."

Fear and determination surged through Kenji as he placed his hand on the first injured animal. At first, controlling the chakra proved difficult, but under Kazuo's guidance, Kenji saw the wounds heal before his eyes. However, the wound suddenly morphed into a horrifying monstrosity, with twisted muscles, bones, and skin.

"This is the consequence of a botched jutsu," Kazuo declared coldly, beheading the wolf. Another animal immediately replaced it. "Again."

With each successful attempt, Kazuo raised the stakes, making Kenji heal himself, starting with aches and sores, then progressing to scratches and cuts, working on different parts of his body. Then, Kazuo abruptly thrust Kenji into a critical situation.

"Pay attention," Kazuo spoke calmly, slashing a deep gash into Kenji's arm. "I've nicked an artery, and time is against you. Heal yourself or bleed out." Kenji stared in shock at the wound, blood streaming down his arm. 'This bastard,' he thought, channeling his chakra and focusing all his energy on the healing jutsu.

This was the ultimate test, life or death, and Kenji refused to fail. He closed his eyes, sweat pouring down his face as he pushed his abilities to their limits.

Then, as suddenly as it began, the wound vanished, entirely healed. Kenji exhaled in relief, but Kazuo was already moving on, a faint smirk on his face. "Well done. You are one step closer to mastering the healing palm."

"Bloody clans, bloodlines, and politics," Kenji grumbled to himself as he tossed and turned in his bed, his backpack prepared for the journey to the frontline with his team. The stark reality of what lay ahead gnawed at him.

Taking a deep breath, he couldn't shake Jonin Kazuo's words from his mind: "When you're beyond the village walls, Kenji, you must prioritize Nawaki's life at all costs."

The burden of Kazuo's words weighed heavily on him, and as he tried to silence his thoughts and rest, he couldn't help but replay the conversation repeatedly in his head.

He recalled Kazuo's voice, steady yet unyielding, as he entrusted Kenji with the grave responsibility. The seriousness of the situation was not lost on him, and he felt a profound sense of anxiety and fear considering the dangers they would confront on the frontline.

"Am I prepared for this?" Kenji questioned, closing his eyes as the weight of the situation pressed down on him. He knew he was in for the battle of his life, and the thought made him swear again to himself.

Despite his doubts, he eventually drifted off to sleep, his mind consumed by worry.

"Damn it!"
