Mystery Solving Quest!

Ah Word Games, where would we be without thee?

@Higure Witch! did you miss the update? i tought you would be all over this.

I would be, but my life decided to be a thing today. I've read over the post a couple of times, but I haven't had a chance to sit down and work through it thoroughly yet.

So then, it's alright for us to discuss theories I'd assume. No requests, but let's talk about the clues here. @Krein seemed to be operating on a suspicion that the thief who got away before never actually got away, and was in fact an employee. I have already stated my suspicion of the maid; I believe that she may have been angered at being left nothing in the will, since she was not among the parties mentioned. It is also possible that she was in fact the thief, as she was the only one to spot the mysterious figure. Krein also seemed to follow my thinking; the valuables may have been stashed in the wine barrels, and retrieved, though the Red Truths seem to be against that idea. It bears further thought, though. The cleaning rag spotted in the room with the will was what made me think of the maid, but it could possibly have been one of the other suspect's.

Hm, yes i was suspecting that the maid was the thief(or at least had a connection with the thief), tough i do not really think she was the murderer, at least, not directly, one of the more suspicious is the Grounds-keeper i think, he has not appeared and the request of his prescence on the estate at the estimated time of murder was refused.

Knox's Decalogue prevents him from being a suspect if he has not shown up in the early parts of the story, and LightMage has not said that the Decalogue is not being upheld in this case.

Request: The bootprint belongs to an individual with a large foot size.

Request: None of the staff are knowingly blood-related to the murder victim or his family.

Request: The victim's body was not moved to the crime scene by the murderer.

Are we allowed to do a closer examination of the evidence?

-Slaps forehead- yeah damn it, forgot about it for a bit, sorry sorry, disregard what i said.

The bootprint belongs to a large boot.

I refuse x2

Are we allowed to do a closer examination of the evidence?
This isn't an RP so I'm afraid not. Requests are the closest you can get to it.

Request: The boot on the desk matches the size as the one used on the day of the break-in.

Request: The murder and the previous break-in are completely unrelated.

Request: None of the papers are missing from the crime scene.

Request: The bootprint was unintentionally left there by the murderer.

I'm guessing that some requests are rejected because they would make the mystery too easy?

The murder and the previous break-in are related.

No documents mentioned are missing.

There's a lot of reasons why some requests might be rejected. Making the mystery too easy is merely one of them. Another one is because It's amusing.
I really only have to reply to blue truths with red, but weaving elaborate red webs that need blue's to be mapped through will come later.

Request: Mr. Royce is strong enough to carry Mr. Hishel from his study to the cellar.
Request: Ms.Trice is not strong enough to carry Mr. Hishel from his study to the cellar.
Request: Mr. Royce was not working yet when the break-in happened.

Mr. Royce and Ms. Trice are strong enough to carry Mr. Hishel around.

Of course Mr. Royce wasn't employed yet by Mr. Hishel when the break-in happened. He's only been working for year or so. The break-in happened a few years ago, that's 1-3~ years before Mr. Royce started working.
Where's the desk, with respect to the high window?

The desk is positioned so that someone coming in from the window or leaving via the window could use it without moving the desk.

Request: The barrels only contain wine!

Request: The barrels marked for the servants are all present and intact!

Request: During the theft years ago, footprints were searched for heading away from the building!

Request: The barrels only contain wine!
Nothing out of the ordinary has been added to the barrels in the day before or the day of the murder.
Request: The barrels marked for the servants are all present and intact!
The barrels currently marked for the servants are all intact.
Request: During the theft years ago, footprints were searched for heading away from the building!
Request: During the theft years ago, footprints were found heading away from the building!
They did search for footprints to try and find clues to where the loot was hidden. Footprints that pointed away from the building were found.
Request: There is only one culprit!

[Joke]Everyone is the culprit. This is now Murder on the Orient Express instead of Cellars And Wine. [/joke]
I refuse.

Request: The barrels that were marked for the servants three days ago are intact.

Request: During the theft years ago, footprints were also found returning to the house.

Request: During the theft years ago, the footprints found pointing away from the building extended a substantial distance from the building.

Request: The Manservant, Maid, and Butler are all considered to have been introduced in the early part of the story.

Request: The bootprints found years ago and in the present case are of the same approximate size.

Request: The tunnel has been inspected since the murder, by someone other than the culprit.

Request: In the theft years ago, there was enough time between "the end of the fight between the thief and Mr. Hishel" and "the maid spotting the thief fleeing" for a human sprinting at full speed to traverse the distance between the house and the hill she claims to have spotted him at.

During the theft years ago, the footprints found pointing away from the building extended a substantial distance from the building. They found footprints at least as far as the hill.

The tunnel has NOT been inspected since the murder, by someone other than the culprit.
One could say the tunnel is shrouded in darkness.

Request: The Maid is not included in the will.

Request: The Manservant is not included in the will.

This was not an accident, or a suicide. There is a culprit.
Request: The cause of death was strangulation.
The cause of death was due to a lack of oxygen to the brain.

I'm not entirely familiar with the system, so allow me to think out loud for a moment. Everyone is welcome to add, argue and discuss of course, but I have some thoughts regarding the motive.

Pertinent Details:

The theft occurred a 'few years' ago.

Items stolen include Gold Coins, a Diamond Necklace and a Gold Bar.

Ms. Trice has worked long enough to have a wine barrel designated for retirement.

A broken wine barrel was found at the alleged point where the thief escaped.

Ms. Trice was the only one to see the thief escape.

Given this, I believe that:

Ms. Trice set up the scene in advance, planting footprints along the grounds in order to draw suspicion away from the staff. She also, during the theft, allowed herself to be seen, in order to further push suspicion away from her.

The loot was promptly stashed inside of the wine barrel marked for her, and a separate wine barrel was broken in order to mask the fact that hers was opened (Or that it overflowed as a result of adding the gold bar). It was her intention to use the barrel as cover to escape with the money at a later date.

With her mother growing sick, that 'later date' came rather suddenly. But what I can't figure out is why she killed Mr. Hishel when she simply could have quit and taken the wine. Perhaps she attempted to resign, and he refused? Or, perhaps, she simply thought that suddenly quitting when she desperately needed the money would look suspicious...
