My Youth Romantic Comedy Turned Into a Quest For the Worlds (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU/Muti)

Studying Kills Socialization Opprotunties, It Seems 3
Gripes About a Teacher, and a Secret Request

This was a good opportunity for Hachiman to learn about one of the girls of the Service Club without any interference. And what better way to break the ice than to complain about their mutual meddler?

"So she's even busier than Hiratsuka-Sensei?" he inquired.

"Watanabe has work daily, near-weekly family obligations, Service Club attendance when her family hasn't called her for personal business, general studies, and a focus on Japanese to catch up on our level," Yukinoshita explained. "Of course, with yours and Watanabe's personalities, I believe that Hiratsuka is a close contender."

"She'd be waiting for me out the front gate if I tried to skip Service Club," Hachiman admitted. "And her choice of anime and manga… she's a teenager in an adult's body."

"She shows her age with her references," Yukinoshita agreed. "Even an exchange student 'living in the past', as they put it, don't know half of the media that she mentions."

"Well, why did she rope you into the Service Club?" Hachiman inquired.

"I wanted to be in a club where no one was jealous of me," the girl admitted. "Combined with one of my status, it was only natural to revive the club that is meant to help others once Hiratsuka-Sensei showed me the clubroom."

"So you simply went along with she said?" the boy asked.

"Hiratsuka-Sensei may be a meddler," Yukinoshita explained, "but she has good intentions. Neither myself or Watanabe felt a need to go against her in that regard."

"So you just bow to authority?" Hachiman asked. "Sounds like you just go along with whatever those in charge want you to do."

The girl glared at him. "That's the way of the world, isn't it?" she countered. "If you don't 'bow to authority', as you put it, you will not be able to get along in society."

With that, she decided to end the conversation by turning her attention to her book again.

She wanted the conversation to end, apparently, so Hachiman decided just to drop it for the time being. There was a quick glance at the cover of her book (Great Expectations by Charles Dickens), and then he returned to his own book, actually paying attention to what the page said instead of just using it to disguise his own thoughts.

Minutes ticked by, the two club members engrossed in their thoughts, until the door to the clubroom slid open.

"Checking in how you are doing," Hiratsuka-Sensei growled, walking into the room.

"A knock…" Yukinoshita reminded, turning towards the teacher.

Hachiman, on the other hand, turned his gaze towards Hiratsuka's clothes. "Are those fish scales and ice bits?"

"You're clearly imagining things," came her reply, brushing a hand over her outfit, sending loose scales and bits of ice to the floor. "Is he behaving himself, Yukino?"

"He is behaving better than a few of my classmates," came the icy girl's reply. "But with their personalities, it isn't too much of a high bar to clear."

"I prefer to think of it as self-preservation," Hachiman admitted. Really, doing anything to Yukinoshita would be begging for a disaster at that point.

"I told you," Hiratsuka-Sensei reminded the two, "you can trust in his low-level creepiness."

"Did you just come to run salt on our wounds?" the lone male inquired.

"I actually came with a request," the teacher admitted. "The other request that Yukino didn't fulfill last year."

"I suspect Watanabe's family and job are preventing me from completing it," Yukinoshita countered.

"If you received a request," Hachiman asked, "why didn't you ask Watanabe-san for help with it?"

"Because it involves Watanabe Morika," Hiratsuka-Sensei explained. "If she found out, she would likely make it more difficult to complete it. Her personality is twisted, and I want you to correct that character so that she can function in society in either Japan or America."

[o] Request: Untwist Wata-

"I'm not taking no for an answer," the teacher stated. "Between your own twisted personality, Hikigaya, and your self-preservation, you should be able to force a change without risking your life."

"You make it sound like she's dangerous," Hachiman replied.

Hiratsuka scoffed. "Don't get hurt," she warned, before walking out the door.

"That was unfortunately ominous," Hikigaya Hachiman stated.

"Watanabe doesn't like people prying into her family or work," Yukinoshita explained. "I doubt you'll have better results than myself in fixing her."

"She's your friend, isn't she?" Hachiman inquired. "Aren't you concerned about her?"

"I am," the girl admitted. "But I can only do so much with Morika refusing to let anyone near the issues that I believe are causes for her mindset. As long as people aren't trying to kill her, she doesn't care about her reputation."

The school bell rang, and Yukinoshita put her book in her bag. "I hope you can succeed where I haven't," the girl stated. "I doubt you will."

With that, she walked out of the room.

Hiratsuka Shizuka will remember this.
Yukinoshita Yukino will remember this.

Dawn: Influence Reset
The days passed, and homework had picked up. It wasn't just a one night light workload and done, but he had to ration it over the course of several days. Still, there was some time for him to himself at night and a smidgen at school…

Actions:

  • (Activity) with (Person or Group)
    • Explanation: Attempt to use a time slot to perform an activity with the designated person. The other person might not always be available, in which case Hachiman will likely try to do the activity themselves.
  • Explore Chiba
    • Explanation: Has Hachiman discover new locations to visit in Chiba, on top of visiting one of those locations; thread discussion makes the likelihood of discovering relevant locations more likely.
  • Read Apocalypse Tome (Section)
    • Explanation: Has Hachiman read the next (readable) part of the designated section of the Apocalypse Tome. You can read multiple parts of the same section during a time skip, up to the maximum number of times to complete said section.

    • Known Choices: Unification of the Warlord, Rebellion of the Archer, Scheme of the Merchant, Fall of the Farmer, Legacy of the Ruler
  • Sleep
    • Explanation: Have Hachiman spend the designated slot sleeping, either sleeping in the Service Club or going to bed early. Grants a +1 bonus to the next d20 Hachiman makes in the next section due to rest (multiple slots spent sleeping don't increase the bonus, but merely extends it to another roll). Can't be taken if the MAXX Coffee action is used for anything other than (None).
  • Socialize with (Person or Group) about (Subject)
    • Explanation: Has Hachiman talk with the designated person or group about the designated subject. Remember people react to different subjects differently, and might respond differently based on which time slot the interaction falls under (if they can't speak face to face, Hachiman will call them).

    • Known People: Hikigaya Komachi (Anytime), Hiratsuka Shizuka (School Only), Watanabe Morika (School Only), Yukinoshita Yukino (School Only), the Hikigaya Parents (Personal Only)
  • Study (Subject)
    • Explanation: Has Hachiman study a subject. In addition to improving the odds of success in the Academic Bargain, it might have other benefits elsewhere…

    • Known Choices: Arithmetic, English Foreign Language, History, Home Economics, Japanese, Physical Education, Physics
  • Visit Chiba Location: (Location)
    • Explanation: Visit the designated location. As more of Chiba is learned about, the more locations open up.

    • Known Choices: Angel's Landing (Sketchy Store), Chiba Library, Chiba Konbini (Convenience Store), Chiba Mall, Chiba Train Station, Soubou High School (Personal Only)
  • (Write-In)
    • Explanation: Want to try something else that's not listed here? Feel free to write it in, and Hachiman will likely give it an attempt. Note that blatantly stupid actions (like telling Hachiman to kill himself) will most likely be ignored and wasted.

OOC: Took longer than I expected, but here we are at last. Now, you get a full slate of actions for Hachiman before Yui shows up. I've also altered which Ability one of Hachiman's challenge rolls will be based off of, which will likely help you. Let us slowly move towards the plot...

We should go to the library to study if we're going to study multiple subjects anyway.

I'm not certain that we should ignore that plot hook.

I want to at least try to break the ice a bit with Morika. Just studying alone makes for a rather dry story and SNAFU thrives on interpersonal relations/issues.

[x] Balanced objectives

I think in canon Hachiman helps Komachi with her HW, plus she might get lonely if we keep 'ditching her' to go to the library so maybe we could invite her to come to the library with us? If she says yes, she could do some HW, and if she says no, we won't have to feel potentially guilty about 'abandoning' her to the house by herself.

Studying Kills Socialization Opprotunties, It Seems 4
Truly Accepting the Challenge Proves to Be Hard Work

"You like to study?" Watanabe inquired.

It was the following school day when she had noticed Hachiman reviewing his Arithmetic during Service Club. Yukinoshita herself was pouring over both a Japanese workbook, Watanabe's worksheet, and her own Japanese assignment. And Watanabe was writing something down in one of her notebooks between Japanese assignments, in a script that he didn't recognize.

"I like things you can do alone," Hachiman replied. "Reading, watching TV, sleeping, stuff like that. If you're a loner, you don't need the company of others to find entertainment."

"Why not take out a book and read for fun, then?" the exchange student asked. "I'd think that you don't need to focus on school every waking hour."

"Hey," the lone male of the room reminded her, "I am trying to defeat Yukinoshita-san in a battle of smarts. I need to keep studying to make sure she doesn't get too far ahead."

"I hardly think you can match me," Yukinoshita replied, not even glancing up from Watanabe's paper.

"Fair enough," Watanabe relented. "Don't let it consume you, though. And good luck."

The girl then let out a laugh, quiet at first, before raising her tone in volume and cruelty… and was suddenly cut off by a textbook to the top of her head.

"Morika..." Yukinoshita warned, withdrawing the textbook she had used to whack Watanabe with. "Restrain yourself so that you don't scare the entire building."

"Stupid me..." Watanabe muttered, rubbing the spot where her friend had hit her with the textbook.

"You let Yukinoshita-san hit you, but not Hiratsuka-Sensei?" Hachiman inquired.

"The two of us have an understanding," Watanabe replied, continuing to rub her sore spot with a gloved hand. "She helps me avoid mistakes, or minimize the damage, and I return the favor."

"Your first day, you wore outdoor shoes inside the building," Yukinoshita stated. "I couldn't just let a foreigner like yourself keep making a simple mistake."

"And for your assistance, I was grateful," Watanabe replied. "And I continue to be grateful for your friendship and assistance."

With that, Yukinoshita passed Watanabe's red-marked paper back to her. "Your previous teacher must have turned you into a masochist for you to keep coming back to me," the icy student stated.

"Even at your worst," the exchange student explained, "you're tame compared to my previous teacher. I'm glad to have ditched them."

Between about a short conversation with one or both of the girls a day, Hachiman was able to complete a chunk of studying of Arithmetic while waiting for requests to come to the Service Club.

Reasoning that forms a conclusion based on the examination of specific examples is called 'inductive reasoning'. By observing patterns, one can use reasoning to reasonably assume the next piece of the pattern. For example, 1, 2, 3, 4, ?, one can use inductive reasoning to turn the '?' into a 5. Of course, such a method isn't always fool-proof; sometimes, the prediction is off of the actual result, like six dots on a circle all connected to each other producing 31 different regions compared to the expected 32. Just because a pattern holds true for a time does not mean it will continue.

Deciding to avoid a run-in with the girl who caused a nightmare, Hachiman decided to study at home for the next few days after school. There weren't as many resources at home he could use to aid him, but on the other hand, distractions were minimal as well.

English was more of the same as before, just without a classmate shooting dreamy perverted looks at him this time. Just searching for certain English words likely to come up on the exam, and work to memorize them in time.

English Foreign Language: +2 Exp, +3 (Int), (0/3)

Japanese was one of Hachiman's great loves of the school. In addition to learning more Kanji, it required reading, which people defaulted to do on their own.

The Japanese script possesses three kinds of characters: Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. There are also romaji, or Roman letters, but with enough training in one of the Latin-based languages (such as English), there is not much reason to turn towards Japanese to learn those.

Regardless, Hiragana and Katakana, like the alphabet, represent sounds. Hiragana have a roundish shape, and are usually used for conjugation endings, function words, and native Japanese words not covered by kanji. Katakana uses straight lines compared to Hiragana, and is normally used for writing loanwords and foreign names. Kanji, or Chinese characters, represent sounds and meanings (instead of just sounds), and are used for nouns and the stems of verbs and adjectives.

In regards to Kanji, Japanese Students are expected to know over 2,100 Kanji by the time they graduate High School. As expected, Hikigaya Hachiman is ahead of the curve in regards to that number, but it is doubtful that he excels too far beyond Yukinoshita. Watanabe… doesn't even know a hundred.

Japanese: +2 Exp, +3 (Int) (0/3)

Home economics. Considering Hachiman's main goal, this was the class he felt he needed to excel in. Contrary to most of the in-class activities, one was supposed to do most of the projects alone in real life, where everyone in class was all too happy to use each other as crutches to get through.

But those that were the most successful were most likely to be prime marriage material for students looking to go far. Hachiman wanted to become prime marriage material for girls looking to go far, so he had an incentive to be among the best.

So how was it that he had to write that essay on curry?

Home Economics: +2 Exp, +3 (Wis) (1/2)

"Komachi," Hachiman stated. "Do you want to continue reading the Apocalypse Tome with me?"

It was a couple days later when he had gotten his homework back to a lower level, when he was able to catch his sister as she was looking at (but not reading, for some reason; with his 108 skills, he was able to tell when someone was trying to use one of them on their own without practice) the pages of a Heaventeen magazine.

The younger girl fidgeted as she looked up. "I… I read the Warlord's battle," she admitted. "That's got to have cost me some Komachi points… but, I didn't know what was going on in it. The Warlord died so many times, but… they kept coming back. What was going on, big brother?"

"I don't know," Hachiman replied. "I'm going to see if I can find out."

With Komachi sitting next to him, and the Tome on their laps, Hachiman read aloud the last Japanese section of the Unification of the Warlord. It provided no answers to the confusion behind the Warlord's constant revival against the Raider. Instead, it talked about the Warlord's return to the King's palace. The author of the book had made the journey as dull as possible; nothing of note happened on the trip back, and despite that, the writer had dragged on for over three pages.

Yet, despite everything, Hachiman knew something was up. Hairs pricked the back of his head, his hands gripped the book more tightly, and a dozen other smaller signs told him that something was wrong.

At the King, though, the climax suddenly approached.

"We are victorious," the King stated. "Our enemies have been defeated, and our lands are ours again."

"It is done," the Warlord replied, a dozen men behind them. "We were disappointed that the Raider refused to submit, but there are others out there that will join us."

"There will always be another battle," a warrior stated.

"Another conflict to cross swords in," stated another.

"A fight to partake in," stated a third.

"We will seek out more enemies!" the King cried out.

"We will bring them to heel!" the Warlord called in response.

"We will have them join us!" a half-dozen warriors continued, before their last word echoed out of the throne room.

"Who are we?" the Warlord asked. "Who are we, who carries the Sword?"

"We will tell you!" the King and the warriors replied in unison. "We will tell you our name!"

Hachiman drew a breath. All through the chapter, none of the characters actually had names; they had always been referred to by their titles, be it King, Warlord, Merchant, Raider, Archer, or even Farmer (though that last one had come out of nowhere and disappeared within a page). At least, there had been no names written in Japanese. But now, the author was going to break that rule, and actually give a name to the Warlord.

And maybe, and maybe, with the name, there would be an explanation to answer one or two of the questions that had appeared.

With baited breath, Hachiman turned the page…

And ran into a wall of text belonging to a non-Japanese language.

"Damn it…" he muttered, repressing the urge to toss the traitorous book towards a wall. He had gotten his hopes up, and for what? A barrier that he still was unable to overcome at the moment.

There had to be a way to translate the pages in the book. Though he wouldn't have put it past the woman at Angel's Landing to have sold him a book no one could read entirely. Really, people were going to new lows for money all the time. Perhaps there was a dictionary of some sort at that shady store?

Hikigaya Komachi will remember this.

[Tip: Consider which class you want Hachiman to go into once he steps out of the Commoner class before you assign Ability Scores. It is unlikely you will have the ability to shift Ability Scores at the same time when Hachiman shifts from the Commoner class. Most classes will be available, but a handful will be locked for Hachiman. These are: Antipaladin, Aristocrat, Summoner (Base and Unchained), Vampire Hunter.]

[Tip: When thinking of classes, those with Animal Companions or Mounts may cause significant problems considering Hachiman's default location.]

OOC: For the classes… well Antipaladin proves too destructive for everyone, and would likely force Hachiman alone for the quest. The Vampire Hunter is near useless, specializing in hunting down enemies that are extinct (or, endangered enough that they are stuck in myths and legends now). For the Aristocrat and Summoner, Hachiman can get those classes unlocked for him; get a lot of wealth for our 'hero', and improve his standing in society to that of a modern-day noble, and he can become an Aristocrat, while the Summoner is locked behind a certain wall… that he might not like getting access to.

I also hope that my 'educational' parts of the quest are legitimate enough that experts in the related subjects are willing to accept them without beating my head in.

Finally, when I started this quest, I set a hidden condition for Hachiman to clear in order to increase his tier. You cleared it, but I didn't expect you to drag Komachi over that condition as well. Congratulations. Now she'll be dragged alongside Hachiman on trips to… the Sea. The intro and tutorial quests in relation to the Sea just got more interesting. I just hope that you won't break her too badly.

Alright, so this plan has us go up to Int 20. It's mainly to make the challenge between Hachiman and Yukinoshita a breeze, but it's also in preparation for the Psychic class if we can gain it, or the Wizard class if we can't.

Right now Hachiman's in a modern world campaign, which means that we should be giving precedence to boosting mental attributes over physical ones. (That is, we're most likely going to be using Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma more than Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution.)

I'm unsure if I should try to kick any other attributes up, but I figured that having a balanced character was more important than kicking a secondary attribute up, thus I left everything except Str and Int at 10.

Here's the Psychic class: Psychic (5e Class) - D&D Wiki

Here's the Wizard class: Wizard

I'm personally gunning for Psychic for that at-will telekinesis.

Edit: Whoops Psychic is a homebrew class so it might not be allowed.

Plus I was accidentally looking at DnD5e classes instead of pathfinder stuff, so uh... just give me a bit.

Alright, here's some Pathfinder classes! They're all different flavors of Int dependent classes, so, uh, yeah. I found them using this, so hopefully they're okay.

Classes - Pathfinder_OGC

Psychic – d20PFSRD

The Pathfinder Psychic, an Int spellcaster. Can function as a normal caster just fine, but also gains Phrenic Points equal to 10 + Charisma or Wis modifier per day hat they can use to enhance their spells. Doesn't need to prepare spells, can cast any spell they know as long as they have the spell slot for it.

The Pathfinder Archivist is another Int based spellcaster. They cast slightly differently then most, as they don't have a rigid spell list or spell slot system.

How that works is thus: While most classes have a system where you can know a specific amount of spells per level, the Archivist only has a limit on the maximum number of spells/runes that you know.

Similarly, instead of having shared spell slots, each rune that the Archivist knows has it's own limit on how many times it could be cast per day.

Like, the Archivist might be able to cast each of their second level scripts twice a day, but heir first level scripts get three uses a day each. That kinda stuff.

Also, the Capstone for the Manipulation Discipline is immortality of the not aging variety. The Manipulation Discipline also allows teleports. So, uh, I'm kinda interested in it.

"Practicing My Kanji Has Given Me Phenomenal Cosmic Power, Just As My Teachers Foretold"

Arcanist - Pathfinder_OGC

Arcanist, another Int based spellcaster. Pretty much just a Wizard who uses spell slots instead of using spells individually. Also kinda uses Charisma.

"My Search For The Truth About Magic Has Given Me A Unique Advantage"

Eldritch Godling - Pathfinder_OGC

The Eldritch Godling, who gets full casting from any spell list and who can choose to use any attribute to do so. Has a fixed spell list and also doesn't need to prepare spells ahead of time, only requiring a spell slot of the appropriate level.

Also about as BS as you'd expect from a Demigod class, given that there's a perk line in there that removes the need to eat or sleep while also preventing aging

Some of the fluff on there states that Eldritch Godlings often have sickly/strange appearances even when hale and hearty like rings around their eyes and stuff, so Hachiman's dead-fish stare will fit right in!

"My Dead Eyes Have Given Me Magic, Now If Only People Could Stop Commenting On Them"

Clockwork Adept - Pathfinder_OGC

The Clockwork Adept is an Int based class who has to prepare their spells ahead of time, like the Wizard. Unlike the Wizard, they can heal or damage machines and/or constructs as well, pretty much making them a cleric/paladin for machines as well. Also at max level, they can inhabit robot/construct bodies. So the healing constructs power + the inhabiting a contsruct's body has some pretty sweet synergy.

"How My Quest To Fix My PS Vita Led Me To Becoming A Ghost In The Machine."

Deductionist - Pathfinder_OGC

The Deductionist isn't a caster class, but it is still Int based. It specializes in boosting up knowledge checks and using a pool of points called "reason" to boost efforts pretty much anywhere. There's a way to use reason to boost combat, you can use it to boost social checks, you can use it for knowledge checks, etc.

It loses casting in exchange for the ability to boost pretty much everything with Reason and/or Intelligence Modifier and/or Character level. Along with some extra feats/talents.

"My Search For Something Genuine Has Begun To Bare Fruit, As Expected"

Scholar - Pathfinder_OGC

And then there's the Scholar class. Another non-casting class, Scholar's make up for that by knowing pretty much everything, ever, along with a healthy magic resist boost. Also, the Capstone for the class gives you enlightenment in the form of a +2 boost to Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma, so that's nice.

"Studying For Exams Has Granted Me The Secrets Of The Universe, How Unexpected"

Alright, so those are some Int based classes that we could get. Right now there's some classes that are pure Int while others require a secondary stat, but my plan only has us going for a pure Int build. If enough people are interested in a class that has a secondary stat, I can try to do some creative book keeping to boost the secondary stat too.

Okay, keeping in mind that very lopsided stats(barring Str and Wis dumps) don't work, either in the game or in his civilian life.
I'm going with Cha biased all rounder stats here, mostly to slot into a spontaneous caster.
Prepared casters are a MESS on quest format.

I dunno, a good way that I've seen them work is to have a standard spell list like a spontaneous caster that they're presumed to prepare every morning, and then having a voting option for if people want to swap out spells.

Something like this:

[] Change your spell list
-[] Lose [1st level spell]
--[] Gain [Other 1st level spell]

Alternatively, just treat all prepared casters like spontaneous casters. I was just going Int because it seems like a way for Hachiman to excel in school and beat Yukinoshita's challenge while also getting access to magic.

Like I said. A mess.
I just saw one recently.

Prepared casters require good planning for what each spell is used for which a quest means casting all the wrong spells at the wrong times.
Spontaneous is safer

Yes, I know, I was in that Worm quest too.

But there are some Int based classes that don't require all that book-keeping for prepared casters.

The Psychic, Archivist, and Eldritch Godling in my post above are Int based caster that do not prepare spells and only have a static list to draw from.

The Deductionist and Scholar are Int-based classes that don't cast at all.

Prepared casters require good planning for what each spell is used for which a quest means casting all the wrong spells at the wrong times.
Spontaneous is safer

And I'm just gonna reiterate, even if we did wind up a prepared caster class, all of those problems go away if you just treat it as a spontaneous one.
