Moid and Zerb Watch Berserk 2016-17

It's been years since I've read Berserk with the last chapter was when they got off the fucking boat (I think it was last year????) but I do wonder, even during my early reading why on earth did Miura put Schierke and Ishidoro at all in the manga.

Like a lot of the issues with those two could be fixed by either not putting them in the first place or just aging them up. Scirpio and Farnese are fine buy the kids aren't developed much other than Ishidoro has a fire dagger +3.

Schierke and Ishidoro
Schierke's done stuff, at least. Has Ishidoro done anything other than find the fishgirl?

Speaking of Schierke, I just realised one way in which Miura is an unusual managaka. Despite being willing to throw around a level of nudity above the norm for even fanservice-y manga, iirc he hasn't had Schierke be part of any of it. Imagine that, a mangaka not sexualising a child.

He is the hero we need right now.

I don't know how to break the news to you.

I did say IIRC because I read most of Berserk years ago in highschool. Now I only check every few months in the hope there's been an update. But I don't remember Schierke being overly sexualised; isn't her most common attire a pretty much full-cover robe? And Miura doesn't have people get naked when they astral project. Then again, I could just be blanking out some of the details from the scenes where various female characters bathe Caska.

So I have never read or watched anything about Berserk but this looks awful. The most I have heard about it was it being compared to another series I did watch and read called Claymore. It was stated to be better but from the rants I am getting in this thread I feel I have to take those opinions with a grain of salt.

There's an older anime from the 90s that is a vastly better representation of how good the series truly is.

You're better off just forgetting this anime even exists when it comes to judging Berserk.

And you need to read the manga to see some of Murata's (the author) absolutely amazing art.

Claymore's decent, but it's not nearly as good as Berserk imo.

Oh what the christ.

I'm actually. Blocking out 3d animations whilst waiting for Unity to finish importing them procrastinating reading the forums and like, I'm a shit animator. I know I'm a shit animator, I know what shitty animations look like. They still somehow look better than this what the fuck. This looks like an early previs hashed out over a drunken weekend and handed over as a 'finished product'.

I actually wanted to look into Berserk one day. I heard it had a big influence on Dark Souls and was worth the time.

This... what the fuck is this?

And you two why are you doing this to yourselves

For reference, here's what the OTHER Berserk anime looked like:

And the other, other anime. The movie series that came out a few years back:

I said it in the OP; Berserk is straight-up one of my favorite Manga. The writing, at least in the earlier parts of it, is genuinely fantastic. The characters are layered and interesting. The setting is grim, the tone is dark, but it's never so hopeless as to just turn you off.

And yeah there are a lot of problems with how it updates, because holy shit Miura is slow as fuck and good god the quality has dipped, but I still want to see what happens to these characters.

And the art?

The art looks like fucking ink etchings. It doesn't look like a manga.

It's why I have such a massive fucking bone to pick with the 2016 anime. It cuts out two incredibly strong arcs, it cuts out a lot of important characterization, and it fucking ruins the look and visual storytelling of a manga so well-rendered that most of its pages belong in art museums.

EDIT: ...also I've read Claymore. I wish Claymore had more than just cool monster designs, because you'd think "sword ladies fight big monsters while being kinda mercenary-ish" would be a huge hook for me. Except the whole thing was like aggressively mediocre and deeply frustrating.

Fuck everything about Claymore's finale, fuck that seven-year timeskip, and FUUUUUUCK the whole "There's a whole big world outside of this where there's a MASSIVE INTERESTING WAR, except you can't see it because fuck you".

I find this one more interesting because its also clearly doing the 2D-3D hybrid but while it looks weird it doesn't make my eyes bleed. Probably because it looks like it fields the 3D elements only for depth and motion during fast-moving fight actions where you can't really see the detail anyways, rather than looking like they decided to use 3D models for everything then coated them with some kind of bastardized cel shading.

Returning to Berserk 2016, it kind of reminds me of modern rotoscope practices:

Except that while rotoscoping is weird in its own way (the textures and shades don't follow the kind of coherent patterns you'd expect of an actual cartoon) the actual underlying it are lifelike because of the actual actors under it. Furthermore the only two instances I've seen rotoscoping pulled are in a movie based on a Phillip K Dick novel about people doing funky drugs, and a docufiction movie that is an excuse plot for rambling existential philosophy. In either case the 'surreal drifting dreamscape' weirdness of the aesthetic was an asset not a liability.

To each their own opinion. I personally feel that showing that war would have done more harm than help. Even as a fan of that series, I felt the end dragged on too long. Adding that would have made it unbearable to me. It probably would be better used in a different story set in the same universe with characters who would actually have a stake in that cluster fuck. Also looking forward to your reactions.

Holy shit. The fucking Berserk Musou game had better quality than this tripe.

As for the whole Schierke opinion thing? I guess I enjoy her more than Isidro. Farnese is my favorite character who isn't Guts, afterwards is Casca and then Schierke and Serpico.

Isidro? Man I dislike that kid, I have no clue what the fuck he's even doing in the story half the time other than to give Guts some cheap mentorish moments with him or for him to get bailed out of trouble because he's a walking hotheaded kid cliche.
