Leo keeps his face pressed against the ground, silently praying that the machine gunners wouldn't close in on his crater (and that the smoke wouldn't dissipate so quickly) as he cursed the powers that be. Why the Hell they thought taking an enemy trench line simply by bombarding first before throwing men at it until it was taken would be a good idea was beyond him, but he'd have a few choice words for them if it didn't mean getting Court-Martial'ed.
He needed a stiff drink after this was all over. Hell, he would've given an arm or a leg just to be back at their side of No Man's Land digging trenches or laying barbed wire.
The Engineer wouldn't have more time to lament his situation as he heard something heavier than a bullet land in the crater, turning around to see that Ana had jumped in as well.
"Oh Hey, I can't see a thing in this smoke (Good work by the way!)" She prods her fellow soldier.
"That's the idea!" He yells back, keeping his gaze trained forwards. The occasional lines of tracer coming from the machine guns didn't seem to be getting any closer, which was good...
"I know you're real good at seeing the small things, what say we work together on this!"
Ana gestures towards the ground leading up to the enemy lines, "You and me, we'll find 'em and clear the way! No way they're stopping us!"
... Only, he hoped that Ana's chattering wouldn't lead the gunners through them. The only reason they weren't dead yet was because of the smoke, and that wouldn't last forever either.
He couldn't help but grin, though. At least the Medic made for good company.
"If the bleedin' MGs don't get us first, that is. Where's Vince-"
Vincent tumbled out of the smoke and into the crater where the Engineers sought refuge in. Gritting his teeth, he unslung his lancer and took aim at the defensive emplacement before him, firing with a grunt as the lance buckled under the sudden force.
Oh, hey, there he is-
Whatever greeting Leo had on his lips died when he saw the man heft his Lancaar M1, prompting the Engineer to clap his hands over his ears on reflex as he gets down on the muddy floor. All he needed was a dull thump and the earth quaking to know that Vincent had unleashed his payload.
The lance flies true and obliterates the south gun emplacement, chunks of concrete and metal exploding outward and dark smoke rising from the ruined facade.
Leo got up just in time to hear the sound of an explosion, followed by falling rock and masonry.
"Thanks!" He yells out to the Lancer over the noise, turning to their Medic to see how she was faring.
Ana prods at something in the mud with a knife, "So I says to Mable, I says: Mable I dunno about you, but I don't think we've gotten any beef in a month!" Ana grins, and looks up at Cohen, waving a sharp tool in the air absentmindedly, "So anyway, after that...", the engineer continues on cheerily despite the bullets and explosions.
...
She really doesn't stop talking, does she?
"Hey, hey! You can tell me about Mable later, we still got that minefield to take care of." Leo taps Ana on the shoulder, pointing towards the aforementioned field possibly teeming with them.
"You sweep left, I'll sweep right! The faster we do this, the sooner we can end this mess and get back to our dugout. On three." He continues, eyeing Vincent for a moment to see if the Lancer was still with them.
"One, two..."
