Memento Mori (Fire Emblem/Advance Wars)

"I am here on behalf of my country of Nohr," Camilla nodded politely, "I believe that we can be of use to each other."

"Well, your gift of food is a strong testament to that." Kanbei replied. "On the behalf of all of my people, you have my thanks. And on amore personal note, thank you for returning my daughter to me. I understand that she is a young woman who must grow into her own person, but a father still worries."

"She seems like she can handle herself," Camilla smiled fondly, "She could use a bit more muscle on her, though. She reminds me of my own little sister in that respect."

Camilla eyed the guns carried by the guards in the room, before looking back to Kanbei, "My brother has... taken an interest in your weapons called 'guns', I don't suppose you would be able to instruct us on their operation and construction?"

"I would need to...think on that." Nabei slowly replied. "We only have so many weapons and ammunition to use them with, as we have no way to resupply."

"Perhaps we could help with that?" Camilla suggested hopefully, "My brother is highly skilled with magic. Perhaps if he better understood your weapons, he could help you produce more?"

Kanbei raised an eyebrow at that. "Yes, my daughter mentioned something along the lines of your people having magic. Considering our situation I am inclined to believe you." He thought for a moment. "I will consider this."

Camilla nodded gratefully, "Thank you. As a token of goodwill, we have given you some of our extra food supplies, and provided your daughter with a Tome containing basic magic cantrips. I'm sure she'll find it enlightening."

"Knowing my daughter, she probably has already read it front to back." Kanbei laughed. "She is always one who never passes an opportunity to sharpen her already sharp mind. In fact, she is chief of our intelegence division. Without her, we surely would have been stuck down by Black Hole."

Sensei took the opportunity to take a closer look at thier guest. "So, you mentioned magic." the elder asked the youngster. "Never seen anything like it, and considering how old I am that's sayin something."

"Magic is a learned skill where I come from," Tome in one hand, Camilla conjured up a small lightning ball with the other, "Some have affinity for it, while others don't, but all are capable of using it... to varying degrees. While it primarily is used for combat by Nohr, it also has applications with summoning, curses, healing, and other useful purposes."

Fannie was most certainly surprised by the sudden appearance of a ball of lightning. "This is very interesting." He said with a smile. "This intrigues Kanbei. I wonder of its limits, and if there is magic that can find socks. I'm always losing them..."

"Unfortunately no," Camilla snuffed out the lightning, "There isn't a spell to find lost socks."

"Wait, you're the same person from two different yet similar worlds?" Tharja looked back and forth between the two of them... before smiling somewhat mischievously, "You don't say? Just out of curiosity, would you be willing to help me out with some experiments later?"

Oh, the things she could try with twins!

Kamui chuckled nervously, "Ah... Sorry but I must decline, Lady Tharja."

An innocent sounding request but Kamui couldn't help but feel a sorta sinister feeling behind it.

Cynthia nervously laughed and replied, "Queen Tharja is..."

Memories flashed back of all the curses and hexes that Tharja placed on the Shepherd in the past before she needed to go back to Plegia. Cynthia recalled all the times that Tharja cursed someone to have a runny nose for several days, or made it so that someone couldn't taste sugar for a few hours. There was even a time when Tharja placed a hex on Cynthia's mother where she couldn't even experience the taste of pie anymore. Boy, she remember her mother crying and Tharja creepily laughing very vividly in her memory. But, nobody had it as bad as Noire. If one person was hexed just once, then Tharja would use three test hexes on her own daughter.

Cynthia swallowed a swig of tea and then finished that thought, coughing nervously and her voice shaking a bit, "Queen Tharja is an interesting Dark Mage with a love for experimentation..."

That was probably the best way that Cynthia could put it. She couldn't exactly say her true thoughts to Azura, mostly out of fear of creeping her out. They were going to be heading to Plegia later tonight, so Cynthia wanted Azura to have the best possible opinion of Tharja before then. Hopefully, Cynthia was able to sneakily mislead Azura. She wasn't a good liar, but maybe...?

Azura blinked after listening to her new retainer's words, slowly lowering her cup of tea as she regarded Cynthia quizzically, "You don't sound very convincing... Is there something I should know about her?" She asked, tilting her head.

Perhaps this Tharja shared much in common with Nohrian dark mages that she might've expected...

Lissa reached her hands put to touch her blonde hair and muttered, after hearing what Niles and Saizou had to say, "Maybe I ought to change hairstyles... I don't know though. I kinda like what I have, but if it makes me look like Peri...?"

She sighed and then commented, leaning back on her heels, "I guess I better go to stylist before I go on vacation in Hoshido..."

Maribelle then turned to Odin and asked, "Disturbing tone? What kind of disturbing tone? Does she speak in a low voice and act all creepily?"

Thoughts of the rather unpleasant Tharja returned to Maribelle's mind. While Tharja was a skilled mage and definitely made all the men turn their heads, she had a rather horrid personality. The way that she was obsessed with Robin and the way that she treated others was certainly unacceptable.

When Kagerou started talking about Princess Sakura, Lissa beamed and asked, also making a confident pose, "Oh? Who's Princess Sakura? Is she an exquisite and mature lady like me?"

A small snicker escaped from Ricken unconsciously when Lissa started saying things like that. Lissa turned her head and glared at Ricken, who quickly turned his head away and lightly whistled like there wasn't anything wrong at all.

Kagerou chuckled softly at Lissa's innocent question and the pose she made, "Well, Princess Sakura is the youngest of Hoshido's royalty. A kind and gentle girl with a compassionate heart. You and her share many similarities except your much more...theatrical than her."

"And stronger as well," Saizo added.

"Hm, give her some time."

...Did Cordelia make a mistake? She could have sworn that Prince Kamui was the one from Hoshido and Princess Kamui was the one from Nohr. Or was it Princess Kamui that was from Hoshido and Prince Kamui was the one from Nohr like the maid said. Prince Kamui did introduce himself as a Hoshido Prince when meeting Chrom and Sumia. However, the maid in front of her was Prince Kamui's servant. She knows who her own master is. With two people named Kamui in the castle, it all was sort of a blur to the Ylissean Pegasus Knight. She was exhausted after long work days, so it was still a somewhat likely chance that she may have been tired and misremembered things, even if she didn't feel all that tired right now.

Cordelia turned to maid and replied, bowing her head slightly, "My apologies, it seemed that I made a mistake. We actually have two guests at our castle named Kamui, so-"

As soon as the soldiers started running amok, Cordelia asked, "What's going on!?"

As the soldier announced that Plegian soldiers were approaching, mounted cavalry alongside a Wyvern, a chill ran down Cordelia's spine. How was it possible that they could have breach the borders? In addition, they were dressed in full military gear. The last time they attack Regna Ferox, they were dressed up as Ylisseans. How could they have gotten so close in military attire!? In addition, they had Chon'sin hostages?

Cordelia tightly clenched her hand into a fist... It seemed that Chrom and the other nobles were right about Plegia wanting to start up another conflict. She was initially a bit hesitant on Chrom's increasing the military budget of Ylisse and placing all those restrictions on Robin's already crippled country, but it seemed that Chrom had the right idea. There were people in Plegia who wanted to wage war with Ylisse and their friends. Regna Ferox was a long-time ally of Ylisse, and Chon'sin had just become a good friend of the nation after the Valm Campaign.

Cordelia ran to her Pegasus, hopped on, and quickly grabbed her Steel Lance and told Raimi, "Commander Raimi, allow me to assist in this battle! Ylisse has a sacred oath to assist its friend Regna Ferox!"

Raimi glanced back at Cordelia and nodded, "We'd be more than happy to have your assistance, Captain Cordelia! Let's show these Plegian filth some real strength!"

"It would be rude of me as a guest not to offer my aid as well," Flora remarked, heading up to the wall herself with a couple of knives coming out of her sleeves. A Nohrian maid must always be prepared.

Just then, the female Wyvern Lord flew up above the wall, just barely out of arrow range, "Hey! I'm giving you all one chance to lay down your arms and talk with us properly! Otherwise, my men and I won't show you any mercy!" She yelled, pointing her killer axe directly at the Feroxi troops.

"As if Regna Ferox would ever surrender to the likes of dirty Plegians like you!" Raimi roared in response, prompting her warriors of Ferox to cheer in agreement.

"Plegians?" Scarlet repeated, seeming genuinely confused, "Never heard of that insult before..." She muttered to herself. As a Nohrian commander, she had been assaulted with insults from various types of people and languages.

He didn't plan to respond, but then she began to walk besides the guards. Hmm, more time for conversation wasn't bad, at least.

Before he asked the Plegian question, after only a few corridors of walking and thinking, he responded to Hana.

"Well, she probably shouldn't. I'm not sure what's going on, but the people here seem to think I'm the devil incarnate, a not unfamiliar notion. Except this time it's not even vaguely justified.

Ahem, what I mean to say is that she'd be backing someone who's public enemy number one right now, while she's in a very fragile situation considering she's cut off from resupply for a time period unknown. I mean, that's just not the sort of thing logical people do, ruining your political situation like that."

He sighs and lowers his head slightly.

"Yeah, that would be her being too kind for her own good. I just hope that doesn't backfire on the poor girl."

Hana sighed tiredly as well, "Yeah... I hope so too. I'll try and watch out for her before she does something she might regret. It's my duty as her retainer to prevent situations like that!"

Seeing the entrance to the prison sails come up, Hana gave the Black Hole operative a hard pat on the back, saying, "Hey, take care of yourself, alright? Without running through the entire castle preferably."

He paused for a moment in speech, although he had to keep walking. His mind raced with possibilities about what he could possibly say. Especially since that was more than a little unexpected.

Turning to walk backwards for a moment, he spoke while facing the retainer. "Thank you for your concern." Then he had turned back around and was gone, walking around the corner and closer to the prison celss of the castle.

Cynthia made a small swallow and tried to choose her words carefully. She didn't want to completely throw Queen Tharja under the carriage and just make her sound as bad as possible. However, she didn't want to lie to Lady Azura and completely make up everything about Tharja. For Cynthia, this was a bit difficult. She had to both make Tharja sound good and a bit bad at the same time...

The blue-haired pegasus knight slowly started explaining, "Queen Tharja... likes making and casting hexes... You should be careful around her, but... you shouldn't be too much on your guard or else you'll make her mad."

Was that good? That was the best that Cynthia could do without talking about all the things that Tharja did to her family and the Shepherds while working on brand-new hexes and curses or refining her already existing hexes and curses.

Cnythia looked up into the sky and noticed that it was starting to get late. The two of them had to get back to the castle as soon as possible and prepare for the trip to Plegia. There was only a specific time window where it would be easy for Cynthia and her group to escape the castle with minimum security. If they left any later, then trying to sneak out of Castle Ylisstol and crossing the border would be way harder. In addition Cynthia still owed a duel to Hana. She couldn't break that promise to the samurai!

Cynthia quickly finished her cup of tea and told Azura, while grabbed Azura's hand tightly, "Oh pegasus plop! We better get back to the castle soon!"

Cynthia quickly left the gold on the table and forcibly pulled her lady out of the cafe and into the streets while still holding Azura's hands.

"... Lady Peri has a soft voice, a bit scatchy," Odin supplied, "and is prone to acts of sudden violence."

Lissa looked away slightly and commented, "Sudden acts of violence, huh...? She seems scary, but... maybe... just maybe... We might be able to get along, believe it or not."

It sounded to Lissa like Peri was a more physically violent version of Tharja. Just like this Peri girl, Tharja also had a soft voice, but hers was a bit deeper rather than scratchy like Peri's. The biggest similiarity with Tharja would be the sudden acts of violence, since Tharja would frequently hex people for no reason at all. She just threw around hexes and curses at pretty much the slightest provocation back when she was an active Shepherd.

A stray thought of Peri and Tharja meeting made a chill run down Lissa's spine. She shivered slightly as she thought about what would happen if she had to deal with having a tea party with Tharja's hexes and Peri's blade ready to start flying when Lissa accidently served them the wrong kind of tea.

Lissa smirked and told Saizo and Kagerou, "If Princess Sakura need some physical training, then I'll gladly give her a hand."

She whipped out her axe and slung it over her shoulder and told the two ninjas, "Give me some time and I'll have her knocking down pegasi from the skies with a single throwing axe."

Ricken muttered to Kagerou, telling her quietly so that Lissa wouldn't hear him, "Lissa's not the greatest teacher if you ask me... She's strong, but she doesn't have any endurance. Also, she slacks off way too much. After a bit of training, she'll probably force Sakura to take a nap while watching clouds and then forget about training for the rest of the day."

It was true, Lissa, like her brother Chrom, had higher than average physical strength for a mage. That's why she trained as a War Cleric instead of becoming a Sage like everyone expected her to. Lissa's magic potential was high, but thanks to the Exalted blood running through her, it just so happened that her physical strength was just as high, if not a little bit more. However, that didn't mean that Lissa could easily fight off 6 enemies soldiers on her own without any repercussion whatsoever. In the end, she was still a spellcaster, even if her primary weapon of attack was an Axe rather than tomes. She still couldn't take as much punishment from blades and lances and other pointy and sharp weapons. However, she could still easily take abuse from any magic-based attacks thanks to her long-running magical training.

Maribelle sighed and said, "It's starting to get late. We all should head back to the base camp for food and rest. I could go for a bath myself..."

Lissa sighed happily and asked, "Phew! I'm starting to get hungry! What's on the menu for tonight, Frederick?"

Frederick smiled and replied back to the princess, sounding proud, "Bear. I hunted a few while you were moving up with the vanguard. It should be ready to eat by then time we come back."

Without missing a beat, Lissa replied, "Well, I guess I'm going hungry tonight. Either that or I'll eat some grass."

Ricken frowned and commented, "You still don't like eating bear, Lissa?"

Lissa yelled back, "I don't like eating things that taste like roasted leather boots!"

"They're fine," Tharja shrugged a bit, "But as Miriel will tell you, experiments work well when you have similar subjects."

Chrom could only smile nervously when Tharja gave him that somewhat expected response. If there's one thing that Miriel and Tharja both had was their love of experimentation, according to Chrom. While Miriel was mainly a number cruncher and looking towards the results, Tharja looked more at the actual process of the experimentation. If there ever was a Ylissean-Plegian magical collaberation research project with each other, then Chrom might have to use his executive power as the Exalt to prevent Miriel from working together with Tharja. There might be some serious troubles in the making if the two of them worked on anything large scale..

Chrom turned over to Prince Kamui and Princess Kamui and gave them a dry smile as well. If the two of them were ever going to Plegia, they should probably sleep with one eye open. Who knows what Tharja would do to them while they're sleeping. Then again, that wouldn't be an issue if they couldn't go to Plegia in the first place. The borders were basically completely locked down after all, even if there were some "violations" earlier.

"...I'll have to look into that," Tharja replied seriously, with a scarily considerate look on her face.

A small shiver went down Chrom's spine when she said that with such a straight face. Tharja already was very... interesting around the regular Robin. If someone threw in a female Robin into the mix, the entire foundation of Plegia might start to shake. Who knows what kind of experiments that Tharja would run with her husband and his female counterpart.

Hm...

A small thought went around in Chrom's mind about a female version of Robin. The regular Robin of this world was already Chrom's best friend, so what would life be like if there was a female Robin thrown into the mix?

Raimi glanced back at Cordelia and nodded, "We'd be more than happy to have your assistance, Captain Cordelia! Let's show these Plegian filth some real strength!"

As Cordelia took to the skies, she noticed that there definitely were two people being held captive by the Wyvern rider in very Chon'sin style clothing. However... one of the hostages looked very familiar. He may had been in Chon'sin style clothing, but he very obviously looked looked like a citizen of Ylisse. In fact, he looked like someone that Cordelia knew. She was looking straight at someone who was pretty much looked 99 percent like the Shephard Ricken!

With a nudge on her pegasus, she charged straight ahead with her Steel Lance at high speeds. She may be bringing a Lance to an Axe fight, but there was no time for her to dismount and grab a sword. She needed to rescue her friend now!

As she charged forward, she yelled at the wyvern rider, "You dare take one of my friends hostage!? Hang on, Ricken! I'm coming!"

Tharja chuckled darkly to herself, lost in fantasies of two Robins. Kamui gave her a nervous sideways look.

Old boats were boring, Tabitha decided. Too damn slow. way too damn slow, even if it was new grounds for its era. It was about two days, yet she couldn't help but feel like it lasted forever.

Maybe she could have spent tiem torturing the prisonner they took from that boarding for information... Or for fun, really, but she lacked tools for what she had in mind. And some others ideas risked hurting the picture she showed of herself so far.

When would they reach land?

With a few mighty beat of her wongs, Nowi landed on the deck and de-transformed, cheerfully declaring, "Land ho! We're almost there!"

Sure enough, the mountaintops of the coastal range could be seen cresting the horizon, slowly but surely.

Finally!

Stretching herself a bit, Tabitha sent the orders for her agents to start getting ready to unload. The most worrying part of this journey was done.

Penny would probably be happy too. She couldn't practice fire magic on the boat, for obvious reasons.

The ship slowly pulled into the harbor, escorted by two small skiffs. The port was a fairly major city, due to its economic importance. Many ships of different makes and sizes could be seen departing and arriving, and all were sail-driven.
Say'ri's yacht pulled into what appeared to be a private dock adorned with Chon'sin flags.

The Next Day

CO Tent, Yellow Comet Camp, Somewhere in Ylisse

Sonja's eyes gaze over the same page she had been reading for the last ten minutes, eager to absorb the knowledge held within. The tome was truly a marvel, the mysteries of magic now in her fingertips (so to speak).

As she read, she began to appreciate the situation she and her people were in.

Well, mostly. The whole "can't go home yet" part was a bit of a downer, but for the most part an ally had been found, so it was a step in the right direction at the least. Now, one day after meeting with the Nohrians, a liaison was to be sent alongside a gift of good will as a sign of thanks for the aid given to them. It wasn't much, but hopefully it was enough.

Just as she turned the page, the tent's flaps bristled slightly as Sensei walked though. "Ah, there you are." Sensei spoke with a gin on his face. "Reading that book again I see."

"It's very hard to put down." Sonja said, gently closing the book and placing it in small bag "The more I read it, the more excited I get about magic, and what Leo and Camila's people can teach us."

"Yes, though your father can say otherwise."

"I agree. It was a miracle he allowed me to be our liaison with our new allies." she said, thanking whoever was up there for getting her father to begrudgingly allow her to do just that. Sonja loved her father but sometimes his protective stubbornness was not easy to deal with. "Is everything in order?"

"Just finished. The boys sent me to get you." was Sensei's reply. "Stay safe out there."

"I will."

--

Later

With a heartfelt "Stay safe" and a hug from Kanbei wishing her to stay safe and keep in contact every hour, Sonja's APC drove through the strange new land they were in towards the camp of their new allies, with their gift in tow.

Literally, as the recon that the wyverns landed on was towed behind the tank that drove in front of the APC. It wasn't the best gift to give as it was broken, but Sonja figured that even in that state the Nohrians could still at least study it. And another Recon, driven by Ito and Yama, was being brought along as part of the convoy so there could be some comparison between it and a jeep that actually worked.

Sonja did nothing but wait with bated breath. Any moment now she would be at the Nohrian camp. Hopefully they were okay with her staying around as a liaison...

As with the loading, unloading the APCs, bikes and temporary construction materials was causing a scene. It had been fun before, showing off technology to primitives, but it was just annoying now. And sadly, she couldn't shoot them to make them go away.

So instead, she turned to more productive matters with Queen Say'ri and Anna.

"What will be our route?" Was her question. Given all she had were on wheels, she had to make sure there wouldn't be issues on the way.
