Welcome to Megaman Legends Beta Quest
A long time ago, the world had big islands called continents were most people lived, but a great disaster happened and the world became a big sea with population scatted into several islands. However despite how scarce land is, most islands are unhabited and ruins with valuable treasure exist in some on them.
The people of the world mostly rely in ancient technology driven by Quantum Refractors, a powerful energy source. These refractors lie in ancient ruins underground and in the sea, and are sought out by explorers called Diggers.
The problem is that Quantum Refractors are Blackbox technology and no one has figured a way to reproduce them, so they are a limited resource. Plus even the most stupid Digger has figured out that eventually no more Quantum Refractors will be found.
Yet, not all is lost, other sources of energy, even if less efficient, are used. The most common being Eolic energy and Geothermal energy.
Eolic energy is the use of air flow through wind turbines to mechanically power generators for electricity. So is especially useful in islands that regularly have strong winds.
Geothermal energy is using the heat of active volcanoes to generate electricity. Since sea water is such an abundant resource, cold sea water is heated in an active volcano, turned to steam, and then use that steam to drive electric generators.
But not every island has an active volcano or can rely on the wind for power, and many machines simply don't work with mere electricity, hence why Quantum Refractors are so valued.
Those who hunt down Quantum Refractors are called Diggers. While at first many people were Diggers, that is no longer the case because the use of alternative energies and simple machines that can function with mere electricity has become more and more commonplace.
That means that nowadays Diggers are treasure hunters, mercenaries, and even Sky Pirates. Simply put the type of people who live for adventure and or money.
That has started to give Diggers a bad name, specially since a event called the "Kattelox accident."

You are a thief, while you could have worked as a mercenary or try to be a hero, life has not been kind with you, so why go for the harder options? Stealing is easier than playing hero and being a mercenary means obeying other people orders.
Yet people doesn't like thieves, but is not like anyone helped you, right? So you decided to help yourself.

I Legends quest. I mean... just wow. Nostalgia city. I have an entire backstory and EU for that I made even, although some details are long lost.
Anyway, let's skip out on Megaman for now, or maybe another Trigger series... I'm just gonna call them Reploids.
So we have Humans who are all extinct, Betas who are basically Humanity v2.0 (and probably somewhat cybertronic on a microscopic level), and the Androids/Reploids of Eden.
I wonder if we're playing Roll. That would be interesting. Got a start of a fanfic somewhere on her starring in the games instead of MM, through for want of a nail at the beginning of the 1st game.

Your name is Roll Caskett. Before... you had a family... and then the Kattelox accident happened. Since then you have been low on luck until the day you found an ancient armor in a place most Diggers had already give up on.
At first you thought luck was finally on your side. Specially when you tested the armor and found it strong and durable, with an in build Buster.
But then to your horror, you found that you could not take the armor off!
Thankfully the armor had some parts that could be moved and included a self cleaning system... and was waterproof.
Still is not easy or confortable to literally wear armor all the time, no matter how clean it made you be.
But you won't give up! Who cares if you are wanted thief who can't hide her identity thanks to the stupid red armor!
Now you got power, and you can self upgrade... well upgrade the armor... but whatever.
And thanks to your last dig you got some extra cash.
*What will you waste your Zenny on?*

The Shield
The shield was big, but not taller than you, and with your armor making you stronger and resistant you could carry it on your back. But the fact was, that the thing was too damn big, probably useful to just stay behind and let it take shots. And also rusty and dented.
So you stole the shield, since no one was using it anyway, and decided to work on it. You removed the rust, polished it and fixed the dents. You also made it smaller, it might not protect your whole body anymore but with your new strength, you can just move it in the right position to block the shots. Feeling a bit silly for it, you painted it red with a white C in the middle.
It felt wrong and good to have the first letter of your family name on it. It... it helped to remember them.
Now better equiped that you were before, you decide to take a job...

One possible upgrade to the shield would be to install some bright lights to it to make a high-tech lantern shield. Basically, a shield with a built-in lantern (though in this case we could use more efficient LEDs, flash bulbs, or car headlights) that could be used to blind or disorient the enemy.
Though, we could just as easily make ourselves some other form of flashlight or weaponized illumination. Maybe a gun-shaped spotlight that functions kind of like the Flash Stopper from the original Mega Man series.

While you could go on a dig or to bug Miss Bonne, the fact is that since you are not a wanted woman in this island... at least until they see you stealing something, you decide to go to the junkyard for recycling. Before the armor, sorting though piles of trash and moving said trash around while you found stuff that actually could be repaired took you all day. With the armor that time is reduced to just half a day.
Most of the stuff you fix will be sold cheap but while your pay is just the minimum wage, you are allowed to take some of the stuff you fix for yourself.
Overall is a dull and hardly rewarding but you are able to get some parts that will be useful for your small ship.
While you wish that you had a flying fortress, you are reduced to just a sea ship, and that's risky considering the kind of... things that lurk underwater. Granted most of the time they leave ships alone, but taking a ship near a dig city is risky if the ship isn't hundred metres over the sea level.
Underwater Reaverbots make the ruins ones look like a joke. There is a reason why no one does undersea exploration anymore.
*With that out the way, what will you do next?*
