Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

I saw this during the Ubisoft Conference a few days ago and thought that it looks really interesting. And they just recently did a pretty long demo of it on Nintendo's livestream about even more details of the game (it'll probably another hour or two before Nintendo puts that video up on their youtube channel).

There are several different party members (the ones shown were Mario, Luigi, Rabbid Peach, and Rabbid Luigi) and each of them has their own unique abilities, weapons (Mario's more of a medium/close range character, with a medium range blaster and a very close range, high damage hammer secondary weapon, for example), and skill trees that you can progress along from completing battles in the game.

It's obviously inspired by Firaxis' XCOM games, but has a lot of their own mechanics added on. I'm really looking forward to it coming out on August 29th :)

Edit: And here's a pretty long demo that Gamespot did as well.

I legitimately feel like I'm hallucinating every time I watch material related to this, but honestly it looks surprisingly good. Not as good as some of the stuff in Ninty's showcase this year, but good.

ps luv those 20-40 demos that nintendo has gotten into

Bewildering crossover aside. I want to find the guy who decided it would be a good idea to make a Mario game a deliberate strategy game and just... I dunno. Just stare at him for awhile with a mix of confusion and pity on my face I guess.

I mean, it looks solid enough. But wouldn't an idea like this fit a party game better? I cannot understand what the target audience is supposed to be.

I grew quite sick of Rabbids but the use of them here is quite funny and the sheer insanity of Mario XCOM is too good to pass up.

If this does well, it might actually be a gateway for some people into tactical strategy games. I want to play XCOM, but the sheer scale of it terrifies me. I'm hoping this is simple enough to get me into the genre, as well as the stepping stone for me to get into XCOM.

Don't worry, the Firaxis XCOMs ease you into the mechanics of the games.

The original is the one that just dumped you into the game and explained nothing :D

So this is the game that actually cinches my decision to get a switch sometime in the near future. I love tbs games and It finally has enough exclusives in the works for me to feel comfortable with a purchase.

Okay.

Why the hell is it a turn based strategy game though?

Turn based strategy games are good and fun and we need more of them in the world :V

I'm still flabbergasted that this made it past the napkin stage.

And that it seems to work.

What else is Nintendo/Ubi hiding in its napkin horde?

Well, Derrick Bitner of Gamexplain has a review copy, and has helpfully uploaded the intro to YouTube. There's not much plot here, but it does explain some things. And honestly, since when have either the Mario games or the Rabbids games been plot heavy?

Also, a Season Pass has been announced. 8 steampunk weapons right off the bat, solo and co-op challenge maps later in the year, and story content next year.

Well. Nintendo has announced the rough release date for the DK expansion (Spring 2018), and Andre from Gamexplain got 2 hours with it recently, and was very impressed.

Most significant things mentioned, the expansion is estimated to be 10 hours long, with plenty of new assets. In other words, this is likely very much worth the price of the Season Pass alone.
