"Ahh, Naruto-kun. It is nice to see you again." The wizened voice of the Third Hokage washed over the room, as the smell of the man's pipe filled the air.
From where he stood, Naruto could feel the familiar, smoky aroma tingle pleasantly in his nose, and he felt himself relax as he always did. Fond memories of time spent with the Third when he was a young boy briefly passed through his head, but he shook it off. As much as he saw the Third as a kindly grandfather, that wasn't what he was here for today.
After the weird half ceremony half celebration party Sasuke had thrown, the blonde had been left in a thoughtful wonder. Several questions had been raised at the event, and they had circled in his mind until he had worked up the courage to confront the old man. He could feel the paper fan burn against his leg as it sat in his kunai pouch, pressing him onward, for example.
"Ne, Jiji...when I was younger I asked you about my parents, right?" In fact, he knew that he had. Several times, in fact. Those memories stood out harshly in his otherwise happy memories of the man before him.
In front of him, he saw The Third's face slowly go from jovial expression to a more neutral, reserved one. For moment, Naruto could swear he saw the him sag, his shoulders drooping ever so slightly. But the second he looked again, Sarutobi had steeled himself, and Naruto thought he must have been imagining it.
"So you have." Much like his face, his voice gave nothing away. From the way the oddly shaped hokage hat titled over the old man's eyes giving him a darker appearance, the blond could easily see how many could find the usually kindly man intimidating.
That wouldn't stop him, however. Not this time.
Scowling, Naruto pushed forwards. "Every time I asked, you told me my parents were dead and that you had no idea who they were." His words rang throughout the office, accusingly.
Sarutobi sighed in response, shifting as he pulled the tip of the Hokage Hat down over his eyes as he leaned backwards. The man said nothing, so the boy did.
"That's not true though, is it? When i was younger I bought it, and even just stopped asking eventually. But I know you, Old Man, and you know the name of every single ninja in this village, and even the name of every civilian. Even without you pulling things as if out of thin air with my clan, that should have tipped me off, but I'd just gotten so used to your answer I thought nothing of it."
It was perhaps a tad ironic, that Hiruzen's own jovial nature and integrity when it came to those under his protection had been the thing that finally clinched it for Naruto. As a kid, he'd spent time with the Old man as he walked about the village and watched him greet random strangers on the street. The Third Hokage made it a point to know everything about the villagers, their names, their age, their health, even their personal goings on in the day. And he did it all by interacting with them personally, talking with them and getting to know them.
Sometimes, Naruto wondered how the Old Man kept track of everyone in his head. How he didn't forget someone, or slip up on learning the name of a new born babe. On one level, it was inspiring and a part of him sought to be able to do the same thing one day. On another, he found it to be quite the daunting task.
A sigh brought the genin out of his reverie.
"I had hoped to not have this conversation for another couple year yet." The Third still had his eyes covered by the hat, but his hands were moving, tapping out the burnt ashes from his pipe as he began to refill it. "You must understand, Naruto, that there was a very good reason I did not tell you who your parents were."
His scowl deepening, Naruto bitterly ground out, "That doesn't mean I have to like it."
"No, I suppose it doesn't..." Hiruzen said contemplatively as he finally looked back up, eyes meeting Naruto's. "Unfortunately, even now I cannot tell you who your father was. The knowledge is simply to dangerous for you to have as you are now."
Angrily, Naruto was about to express how that was bullshit, before the other man held up a hand, forestalling his outburst.
"I will tell you one day, Naruto, when you are ready. And only when you are ready." Voice stern, The Third's expression brooked no room for argument.
"And my mother?" Naruto bit out, still bristling.
For a moment, Sarutobi was silent.
"Her name was Kushina. Uzumaki Kushina. And she was your predecessor as the Kyyubi Jinchuuriki."
"W-what?!" Those words shook the blonde to the core, leaving him dumbfounded. "You mean I'm not the first?"
Chuckling despite himself, amusement was written plain on the Hokage's face. "Of course not. Did you not learn of this in the academy? According to my sensei, it was quite the endeavor for him and the others to gather all nine of the Tailed Beasts. Though they've since been distributed to other villages, at one time Konoha held all nine of them within its walls. A feat your own clan was indispensable for."
"Wait, the Uzumaki actually had a presence in Konoha? The books I went through said they were near all gone, by the time Uzushio fell." Naruto couldn't help but ask.
"Mmm, the Uzumaki Clan were fairly prominent within the Village, their members coming and going. They had several properties in their name, which I suppose are now yours, though i believe they have not been well maintained. Sadly, before the walls of Uzushio fell, those not tied directly to Konoha itself had returned to their village, a we were in the middle of war."
Brow furrowed, Naruto couldn't help but pick up on a few key words. "'Those not tied directly to Konoha?'"
"Those who were there permanently in the Village. Including my Sensei's -The First's- Wife, Mito."
"Wait, if Mito married the First, does that mean i have family in the village?" A small spark of hope was present in his voice, but it was a fragile, half-hearted thing. And his low expectations were proven right when Sarutobi's face grew pained.
"Sadly, that line has all but died out. Only Tsunade remains, and she has not set foot inside the village for decades, now. One of Mito's daughters had married into the Uchiha Clan, to a friend of mine, by the name of Kagami. Their own daughter was friends with your mother, and was the one who introduced her to Uchiha Mikoto, I believe."
For a single, horrifying moment, a thought crossed Naruto's mind. "I'm not related to Sasuke, am I?!" Eyes wide, and voice frantic, desperation was clear in his voice.
Once more, the Third chuckled. "No, no, Mikoto was young Sasuke's mother. She babysat for you, when you were younger in fact, when I was busy. Unfortunately, your only other relative living at the time died shortly before the...incident. Shisui looked to be a very promising ninja, sadly cut down before his time."
Blinking, it was if the Hokage had suddenly remembered something. "Ah, I believe I actually still have several baby pictures from when she babysat you. You and the Young Sasuke were fairly 'cute,' as she constantly went on about. Would you like to see them?"
"Uh, No, no thanks! I'm good old man, definitely don't need to see those, I'll just be going now, see ya later, have a nice day, please don't let those pictures see the light of day!" And then Naruto was gone, frantically backing out of the Hokage's office.
Left alone, smoking his pipe, said Old Man couldn't help letting out a sly smirk as he chuckled.
"Get's them every time." Surreptitiously, he patted his side where he kept a wallet packed with several embarrassing baby photos, of not just Naruto, but Asuma and Konohamaru as well.
There'll probably be a follow up to this, where Naruto is directed to the Uzumaki Mask Shrine, as it's fairly important, but this was getting long. For now, we have an interrupt to the usual schedule!
