Lords of Silk and Stone (Exalted 3rd, DB)

Lords of Silk and Stone

The Grey River is the lifeblood of the South East, the great highway of trade upon which the fortunes of a hundred petty kingdoms rest. Convoys of stone and precious metals from the Summer Mountains, fleets filled with exotic woods and spices from the southern jungles and exotic treasures from the far east all ply their way up and down its immense length, and tariffs from their passage fill the coffers of a thousand coastal lords.

Until recently, the southern reaches of the Grey River was dominated by the Shah of Taira, whose expansionist empire united half a dozen patchwork cultures under a single banner and brought some measure of peace and prosperity to the region. But now the Shah's line is all but dead, and in the wake of their passing the land has collapsed into anarchy. Mercenary armies roam the lands, contesting with troops loyal to a multitude of petty fiefdoms, and with every passing year the dream of peace and unity grows ever-more distant. For most such a thing is a tragedy, but there are always exceptions to any rule, and in a disunited Taira some cannot help but see the rich gleam of opportunity...

The Cadet House of Jades is one such vulture. Built from half a dozen familial lines united by blood and common interest, the House has ruled over their Satrapy of the same name for many years now, bringing great wealth to their distant Imperial sponsors in exchange for the power and supplies to maintain their hold over the local tribes. They are a proud, fractious lot at the best of times, as oft divided as acting in unison, but between their mountain fortress-towns and the blood of the dragons that flows in their veins, their power is undeniable. They have long competed with Taira for a share of the river's wealth, and with their old rivals collapsing into civil war they sense opportunity for great wealth and prestige, if they can but find a way to seize it for themselves...

It is in such troubled times that our story begins, as a sworn brotherhood of young dragon-blooded come into possession of the keys to an ancient temple on the river's banks. Seizing such a treasure will make their names and secure a place of power and prestige for themselves within the ranks of House Jades, but it is far from a safe undertaking. The temple is reputed to be a dangerous place filled with many dark secrets, and even should they emerge victorious there are any number of covetous rivals who might seek to take it from them... but they are Exalted, and if they can find a way to work together then there is no challenge which they cannot eventually overcome.

Come, then, and let us share the tale of their deeds...

Introduction

Welcome, one and all, to my game of Exalted 3rd Edition. This is a Dragon-Blooded game using @Crumplepunch's excellent A Clutch of Dragons homebrew, and will be run primarily over Discord at times and days to be confirmed.

Article:
Timing wise, I was thinking of running the games on Saturday as a reliable schedule, spacing out side-scenes and character interactions as and when needed (I'm on Discord most days and generally free in any given afternoon). I live in the GMT timezone, so you might want to consider posting your availability in the thread to start with.

The mechanics of character creation can be found in the core Ex3 rulebook and in the Clutch of Dragons pdf, but I'm more interested in character concepts and group relationships at this stage. Therefore, along with the basic idea for your character I would like to see the following:

Who are your kin? – House Jades has numerous other Dragon-Blooded in its ranks, as well as more than a few mortals (and semi-mortals) that have obtained some measure of power and authority for themselves. I'd like three supporting characters from each of you to help me fill out the ranks of the wider house. These don't need to be very long – a name and a couple of lines of description will do for each – but I want something to build on. They might be friends, enemies, family members or anything else besides.

What does the House want? – House Jades invests in any number of resources and potential advantages, from mines filled with white jade to archeological expeditions to the ruined dominions of the Dragon Kings. From each of you I would like one resource that the House either has or is looking to secure right now, which can serve as a future plot hook or complication in the story to come. Something interesting and evocative is ideal, but again I don't need a huge library of stuff to work from.

And finally...

Why are you involved? – The basic premise of the game is that you all know each other, and have decided to band together in order to secure a valuable old ruin from the time of the Shogunate for the glory of your name and House. It is therefore important that your character has something useful to contribute to the expedition (even if it's just "I am really good at killing monsters") and is the sort of personality who could reasonably be brought in on this sort of thing. If you can successfully secure the site then the wider House is likely to let you keep it, and might even be willing to help you develop it, but the question remains – why do you want this?

@EarthScorpion's write-up of Taira can be found here, if you want to have an idea of the local geography and politics.

That should be everything, so without further ado... let's see some character concepts!

House-Rules

Craft requires only one ability, which can be applied to anything appropriate for your background in a similar fashion to Lore. Branching out is treated as buying a new speciality dot.

Damn, I know jack about Exalted..

Nonetheless, I might pop in from time to time to see what's going on. :V

Good luck!

Sounds good. I'll read The Clutch of Dragons and see if I can post.

Y'know, I might be interested. I'm not so sure I can play yet, but it could be fun.

I actually have a half finished sheet I can tweek for this, I think. I'll post it when I get the chance.

Saturday afternoon GMT will be tough for me, though, since I'm EST and occasionally work Saturday. I'll wait and see how things pan out with others.

V'neef Isra is a scion of the house of V'neef, sent to as a marriage prospect to any member of House Jades (I think a player would be most fun) that his House may have arranged. He is incredibly beautiful, sorcerously potent, a trained general and in all of those aspects he barely matches his incredible arrogance. Indeed, slanderous rumours may even have you believe that he came here only because his House could not tolerate his arrogance anymore, yet he is a well-bred Dynastic scion, and certainly not a bad-looking one at that...

Yeah, I've told @Maugan Ra of this concept before and it started as "Byakuya Kuchiki, except Exalted" and now it's grown to this hilarity. :V

I'm putting together a character now, and actually have a question about how, exactly, Exalted naming works (something I've always been kind of weak on). In particular, what kind of name would a Lost Egg DB who is pledged to marry into a Cadet House have before, during, and after the betrothal and marriage process?

I think the right answer is that before the DB would have a threshold-style name like Adjective Material, and after marriage would adopt the name Jades BagOfSyllables. Is that right?

edit: in light of @ManusDomine's character... what if the DB were adopted instead? He or she would be renamed immediately after adoption, right?

So, idea: he finds out that he's actually being pledged to an adopted Lost Egg (my character) and has to decide whether to reject this insult or go through with it. Meanwhile, she's not exactly thrilled to be stuck with this jerk, but she has approximately zero pull within her adopted House and in fact is completely dependent on them, so she'll have to find some way to live with it...

There is absolutely no way this could ever go wrong; we should do it and I will laugh through it the entire time.

Okay, at the least I want to watch this game now, even if I don't get the chance to play.

Willow, Immaculate Monk
Jades Willow, the Alleged Monk

Stories of Willow's adventures often preceed her; she is an untrustworthy character at best, but a good party companion at worst. That she was trained in the Immaculate Order is certain; that she is still an Immaculate Monk, as she claims, is doubtful. Those who like her would call her a hedonistic soul; those who do not, a drunkard, a gambler and a scoundrel. She is kind to the poor folk and brings charity where she goes, but that charity sometimes comes by wrenching the arms of the wealthy through words or deeds. Everywhere she goes she carries her "walking stick," and those so unwise as to raise their hand on her discover that it does not only help her walk. The many stories she tells of her life are oft contradictory, and the only guiding thread is that she seems blessed by fate and chance to always found a way out of her predicament.

Her Kin

Jades Sycamore
is Willow's older brother, a Wood Aspect made out of sterner stuff. He is her superior in the Immaculate Order, and his influence on her life varies from helping her get out of whatever new trouble she got herself into, exasperated scolding on her unmonk-like behavior, and subtle forms of punishment such as assigning her "orders" she cannot quite refuse.

Wind-in-the-Branches is Willow's aunt, although she seems as young as Willow herself. A flighty character, she is the daughter of a powerful Air Elemental, blessed with slow aging and the gift of the winds. She enjoys offering Willow her "guidance," which often manifests as terrible advice, mischievous plots, and generally showing off her niece. They are something of a pair of rivals, but Wind's extensive socializing and network of connection grants her influence that often leaves Willow groaning at the sudden realization that some recent happenstance in her life was remotely enacted by her insufferable aunt.

Jades Hickory is Willow's cousin, and a gifted Water Aspect. Calling himself a "dabbler" in the martial arts, he never joined the Immaculate Order but learned the basics of many other, lesser styles. There is little love lost between the two cousins; most of their encounters, while polite at first and sometimes helpful to one or the other, eventually ended in an unconclusive duel as both tried to show the other the superiority of their path.

Her House's Goals

The more faithful members of House Jades hope to use Willow as a means of bolstering the Order's influence in Taira, however ill-suited the girl herself is to the task. She must go into the wild places and preach, and it is their hope that in the ruins of bygone ages she may find texts which will strengthen their standing in the faith, as well as help their proselytizing mission. If she gets into ill-advised fights against local gods and weakens their influence... That's just a nice bonus.

Her Own Goals

Jades Willow is absolutely in no way a pirate. Sure, she may have traveled on a pirate's ship, but that ship sunk anyway. And also sure, she may still be hanging around that pirate (hello @Stormwhite ), but it is only so that her positive influence may bring them on a more righteous path. And it has nothing to do with the two of them always getting into trouble of the sort Willow loves. That she is a gifted martial artist with a stunningly hard-hitting staff is just another reason why any self-respecting brotherhood would invite her; really it's just because they want the worshipful company of a true monk.

Okay, so I threw something together while I was waiting for the thread to open up, but now that it has, it seems that that I'll need to adjust him a bit. :V

Though before I get to that, @Maugan Ra would you allow supernatural merits? The ones I want of Quills and Subtlety, specifically, to represent his heritage and Wood Aspect coming in so strong that he can just grow pine needles, though I have ways to have that part of him be just flavor if you don't want to allow it.

Kwi-Nam, Financier
Jades Kwi-Nam, Earth Aspect RGO Financier (Age 32)
Tall, with the beginnings of a paunch from his excessive (even by the standards of the Dragon-Blooded) consumption of wine, women and song, Kwi-Nam is otherwise the very model of a Child of Pasiap: Reliable, efficient, hard-working and enduring great hardship.
During his formative years in the pressure-cooker schools of the Dragonblooded, it became quickly apparent to him and his tutors that his greatest talents lay with extracting resources to shape them into wealth, although Kwi-Nam spent a further three years studying the arts of architecture at the behest of his father, Jades Seong, to round out his education in the arts most pleasing to Pasiap.
Ever since, Kwi-Nam has bent his talents to enriching House Jades (and throgh it, himself).

Who are your kin?:
Jades Seong the Younger, Kwi-Nam's elder brother and the only other of his siblings to Exalt so far (albeit by the grace of Mela). The brothers are on good terms, though Seong (t. Y.)'s duties have carried him from the family's ancestral home of late. Short where Kwi-Nam is tall, reserved where Kwi-Nam is gregarious and cheerful, often described as a taciturn block of ice, Seong the Younger and Kwi-Nam are studies in opposite. White-haired, almost painfully pale (he complains much about the daystar's searing rays) but astonishingly handsome compared to his comparatively plain brother.
Jades Octavia, Kwi-Nam's cousin's wife. An Earth-Aspected Lost Egg who came into House Jades through marriage to Jades Ha-Jun (who was mauled to death by a pack of Tyrant Lizards three years ago). Octavia and Kwi-Nam have been good friends for years over a shared interest in Shogunate architectural styles and the evolution of the Realm's dynastic art over the centuries since the Contagion. Her skin is the colour of a karst cliff, making her seem harshly foreboding, and her long hair is speckled with the colours of gemstones.
Jades Zheng, the Crusher. Perhaps the only member of Kwi-Nam's extended family that he can't stand - much less appreciate. To hear Kwi-Nam tell it, the Water Aspect is an uncultured brute, a detestable swine, possessing no manners, no education, with the bearing and character of pigs rutting in the mud at best. Nobody is quite sure whether or not their mutual loathing came about at the academy, or if it was the result of a single, polarizing moment, but it is clear the two men despise each other in the way only family can. If Kwi-Nam is to be trusted, the poncy bastard spends so mcuh time on his luxurious aquamarine mane that he doesn't get anything else done. (Kwi-Nam cannot be trusted to be entirely accurate about Zheng.)

What does the House want?
As befits his station as a financier and architect, Kwi-Nam's mission is to secure prospecting rights and land grants for the further extraction of White Jade. Should he come about incidental other natural wealth, he is, of course, invited to work on that as well, but the mission is clear: Further the wealth of the House.

Why are you involved?
Kwi-Nam wants to do this because he wants to get really, really stupidly rich. Rich enough to afford his children - which he wants a bushel of, and for them to Exalt - the finest tutoring in Creation, regardless of where they go, rich enough to build himself and his wife a pleasure-palace that would make even an elder Cynis applaud appreciatively.

Wow. I will think about character concept, but probably go with "Man with the plan and great ambitions, a.k.a future ruler of Taira" as a base concept and mix it with top notch Investigation and Social skills.

House Jades has a substantial number of divine bastards and others of supernatural heritage among its ranks, being far from picky when it comes to new recruits, and therefore supernatural merits that reflect part of your own bloodline are acceptable.

Sparrow, 'Privateer'
Jades Sparrow, Definitely Not A Pirate

Sparrow's adventures have been many and varied and she has developed a certain...reputation, so to speak. Until very recently she made her name as a privateer (not a pirate, thank you very much @Omicron), preying on those misfortunate enough to cross her path in her sails across the Grey River, returning a tithe of her winnings to her family so as to ensure their continued tolerance of her antics, the remainder of which fuels her irreverent lifestyle. While she has no qualms on preying on those who cross her, she has a certain regard for the poor and the wretched and will go out of her way to ensure she does not worsen their already poor lot in life. Despite her few redeeming qualities, she remains a liar, a thief and a scoundrel and it is frequently only her talent with a blade that prevents her from meeting an early end.

Her Kin

Jades Hyeon is Sparrow's uncle, an Earth Aspect and patriarch of her family, a stern man who strongly disapproves of Sparrow's irresponsible lifestyle, yet respects her ability to land on her feet and succeed despite the odds. He and Sparrow have an adversarial relationship, but there is respect on both sides, though both would deny it if questioned on the topic. He is a veteran bureaucrat, and is not slow to use his influence to impede Sparrow if she has gone too far over the line.

Jades Agnozi is someone that Sparrow would not hesitate to (and frequently does) call an 'unmitigated asshole'. A proud warrior of the Jades Family, he is Sparrow's cousin and the son of Jades Hyeon. Earth-Aspected like his father, he admires him greatly and frequently acts as his father's 'errand-boy' as Sparrow puts it. Humourless and dry, he has an incredible sense of duty and is a strong believer in the good that order can bring, which often brings him in conflict with Sparrow's own ideology, and the two have clashed before, although it's yet to come to blows.

Jades Fian is Sparrow's beloved younger sister, and perhaps the one person that she genuinely cares for above all else. At fifteen-years old, she has yet to exalt and still lives at their family holding. She has a talent for poetry and delights in reciting it to Sparrow on her rare visits. While Sparrow retains an...interesting relationship with her parents, she loves her sibling dearly and would not suffer harm to her, and frequently brings her expensive trinkets from Sparrow's travels.

Her House's Goals

House Jades may see Sparrow as one of their more reckless and unruly scions, but none can deny her talent in combat nor her inexplicable gift for surviving any situation. House Jades hopes to use her as a blunt instrument against their foes, sentient or otherwise, obtaining the riches that can be won in such a manner in their name, whether they be ancient riches, lost artifacts or priceless treasures. If she should perish in the endeavour...well, that's a shame but better that than one of their more obedient and reliable members.

Her Own Goals

Captain Jades Sparrow remains as such, even with her ship at the bottom of the Grey River, thank you very much. She's been a captain for years now, and she's not giving up the title just because of the mere technicality of no longer having a ship! That said, it'd be a pain if people kept making that assumption and she had to keep correcting them, so she needs to get enough money together to buy a new ship. One that won't sink this time.

@Maugan Ra, when you say on Saturday, are we talking morning or evening, and for how long?

I said Saturday because that is when I have a day off, basically. Morning or afternoon are both viable, evening can be a bit of a stretch since I need to wake up at 5am Sunday morning, and I find that ~4 hours tends to work best for a session. Specifics will be decided at a later point, once I have an idea of everyone's availability.

(I can do other days if needs be, but Saturday is the one where I don't have any other commitments at all, so it made for the best starting point)

I'm looking for 3-5 players.

Might be best if I pass on this for now, then, given how many people have already submitted concepts and the timeframe. Though I would like a link to the discord so I can read the logs.

(I'm still interested in playing, but... I'm EST.)
