Basically, this is going to be the same scenario of the old animated Spin-off, where they're effectively making the thing Buzz Lightyear the toy was based off of.

Bit disappointed they recast Tim Allen, but the idea of a Pixar animated sci fi epic, maybe even taking inspiration from Interstellar, Gravity and the like is weird enough to be interesting to me.

Hasn't Tim gone full-on Trumpite? May have been worried he'd say or do something stupid....
tbh I had originally typed Patrick Warbleton there having forgotten he wasn't the one who voiced Buzz in the actual movies, so I tried to edit it so I didn't look like an idiot.

It seemed that backfired.

TBH I thought they'd already done 'what Buzz Lightyear was a toy of'. Wasn't there a "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" cartoon in like the early 2000s or did I hallucinate that?

Yep, there was.

I heard that Pixar wasn't the biggest fan of it for some reason, though.

So does this mean that when they were making the Toy version they couldn't afford Evans (or whoever played him in the in Universe 90s version) and got Tim Allen instead? You know like when the need someone to voice Woody on a tight budget and get Jim Hanks to do it.

Honestly, I'm kind of onboard to see this, just out of the curiosity that they seem to be making Pixar's Interstellar.

This looks good. Very different from the Star Command cartoon (which seems like it did a better job of actually being the saturday morning cartoon that would make a toy like Buzz) but very good.

Maybe it's supposed to be a modern reboot, with a more serious tone and a bigger special effects budget, like some of the comic adaptations or the Power Rangers movie?

So does this make the old cartoon the Buzz Lightyear Legends canon?

What I'm wondering is is this going to fully be a Buzz Lightyear origin story, with a smaller amount of alien and monsters action towards the end. Or is this teaser frontloading the hell out of the opening act.

It could be cool either way, but this is the difference between this being a really cool interesting direction for a Pixar movie and a more traditional feature.

Hmm, seems a bit too low-tech for Buzz Lightyear given what I remember from the Star Command cartoon and the bit of the video game we saw in Toy Story 2.

This is fucking tangential, but uh...

Can Hollywood please find another Bowie song to tie in to every single movie God fucking damnit.

It's always fucking Starman. It's become an even more hackneyed cliché choice than Space Oddity and that's fucking saying something. Fuck, overexposure of his spaceman stuff was something Bowie himself wrote a song against. We know Major Tom's a junkie, but it seems like nobody in the Hollywood trailer studios got that particular memo.

It was good in that one Torchwood episode, though.

Would you have preferred Elton John's Rocketman?

And personally while I am thrilled, can't help but think Pixar wanted to do a 'serious' space adventure movie, but made this a Buzz Lightyear feature so to get Disney onboard who under the new management and pandemic eating into their profits are extremely stingy with money.

If they really wanted to go full Meta, they should have named him something else (but similar), making it clear Buzz Lightyear is the dollar store knock off version.
