Let's Play RPGs I Missed! [Now Playing: The Legend of Dragoon]

I called Lorence Charphiroth when I first encountered him in this game.

I wasn't wrong.

Also I have no idea how far ahead you've played at this point, but while I think this was the last section with stealth mechanics (maybe second last), it's definitely not the end of Metal Orbment Solid when it comes to convoluted plot twists.

Whew, finally caught up!

Some of the games I've considered include Star Ocean (probably the First Departure R version), a game in the Tales series, Live a Live, Legend of Dragoon, Bravely Default, Lufia 2, Lunar, or Skies of Arcadia... I may have played some of those before, ages ago, but obviously I don't remember much of them. I've also through about really obscure games, just because nobody really knows them - Shadow Madness for the PS1 for example, which I dimly recall borrowing at some point.

Skies of Arcadia is also excellent, honestly 10/10 game, but it's a chonker, length-wise.

I was gonna second Skies of Arcadia as one of my all-time favorites but yeah, it's a big game (even if nowhere near as much dialogue as the Sky trilogy) so if the goal is a smaller palette cleanser something else probably fits better. The Tales games are generally pretty good but share Arcadia's 'problem' of being full-length JRPGs and are thus not the snackable bite of gaming you're after.

Trails in the Sky (Part 77) - Royal City Exploration - Championship Morning

Royal City Exploration - Championship Morning

South Block

Finel tells us that these soldiers started showing up everywhere last evening. He wasn't even doing anything, and yet they made him feel guilty! It's like we're under martial law… or at least it feels that way! Nonna personally recommends her strawberry crepe… Berden says that a lot of people are out early today to get good seats for the championship. Gaspard expects trouble, but he sure hopes there isn't any today. Latanya says it all ends today. She wonders what the final bout's going to be like… Maybe she'll go to the arena in person and watch it in person! Tran remarks that every day he takes a long walk for his health. He feels good today, probably on account of the weather!

At Wingard Orbal Factory, Zacharias recognizes us as the bracers who made it to the finals, right? He'd be ecstatic if we used Wingard-branded quartz to win it all in the Martial Arts Competition! And of course, if that were to happen, an endorsement would be appreciated as well! Upstairs, Tom says that today is the final match in the Martial Arts Competition, but he'll be finishing up repairs here while his customers are enjoying themselves at the match. At the Fisherman's Guild, Fisher tells us that yesterday he met a truly passionate neophyte angler. He was moved by her love of the sport, and asked Percy to extend her an invitation to join their ranks. Lloyd mentions that Percy is out at the fishing class, he supposes? That class serves an important function for them: to boost their membership and spread angling awareness!

At Weis Arms & Guards, Chaeli is happy to see us again. So, today's the final match, no? She's just about to close shop, and then she'll be heading out to cheer for us - louder than anyone! Shepard sighs, and wishes he was a bit better with words… When he's around people, he just doesn't know what to say.

At the Bracer Guild, Elnan wishes us a good morning. Today is the big day! Did we get a chance to go into the sewers yesterday? …Egads, what a question! It sounds strange, he knows, but it really is a fine place for us to brush up on our technique! At the house next to the guild, Bill tells his wife that she needs to hurry it up, or they'll be stuck in the nosebleed section! Ilene calls him a devil! Just hold on a moment…

At Sunnybell Inn, Cready wishes she could go to the arena and watch the matches… In this line of work, though, she's at her busiest when other people are out and about, having the time of their lives. It's not fair! Spencer says there were so many soldiers in the streets last night that he got stopped at least four times! Does he look that suspicious? It makes him feel a bit self-conscious…

There's a few soldiers around again - one near the inn says that he wants to go see the championship match, man! Another near the orbment factory wonders what we want? Move! We're in his way! A soldier patrolling the streets mentions there's nothing to report here, while a second hopes that the Competition finishes quietly and without incident.

East Block

In the streets, Builna says she saw this nun she'd never seen before at the cathedral recently. Wonder when she started? Laone tells us that he doesn't care that those Special Ops guys are Colonel Richard's troops - he doesn't trust them! That we would even have stormtroopers like that, serving in Liberl…

Near the arena, Miele says that we should look at all these people! He got up early specifically to avoid the crowds. Lot of good that did! These are the final match-ups, though, so he shouldn't be too surprised by the turnout. Godfrey wonders who he shall cheer for? It seems that whoever he ends up cheering for always loses. Maybe he should cheer for the team that he doesn't want to win! Good old reverse psychology hasn't failed him yet! Er, he means, it has! It totally has!

Robyn cheers at the final round - who will win, who will lose? She doesn't even really care, just YAAAAY! Violence is cool! Lifa says it's almost time for the match to start. Are we nervous? When we're ready, we should heat for the entrance… Phoebe says she keeps thinking about all the different teams, and she's decided that in the end, she's just going to cheer for Joshua! Her one and only! Nana incredulously wonders why Phoebe is going to cheer for just one person?

Private Bergan concludes that Olivier is 'stepping out' again, huh? He knows that no one is covering for him and all these little 'walks' of his, right? Bergan's been ordered to report him in the event of him doing anything particularly asinine. Private Tact says that it's the final round today, at long last. He believes in us, and tells us to knock 'em dead out there!

Sorbet welcomes us - step right up! Today, after the final match, she'll be selling her special championships sundae! Come buy one later!

Carla remarks that the ice cream they sell here is really good! She bets it's probably one of the most famous stores here in the capital. Clarice says Sorbet's ice cream is pretty popular throughout the city. There was a big rumor that Princess Klaudia snuck here and ate some, and then her attendants came to get her and made a whole scene out of it... Nemo says that ice cream is really good - Lucia has some? Lucky! Lucia mentions that her mom bought her some…

As she wanders around, Marsha mentions that all these soldiers showed up in town yesterday. Wonder if they've found those Royal Guardsmen yet? Nearby, Anton mentions that there's this beautiful girl who walks by here all the time. Some days, counting how many times he sees her is the only way he can keep himself sane. If you can call that sane! Ha…haha…ha. If that girl walks by here three times today, he's going to go up to her and say hi! Now he just needs that book, so he can pretend to be reading it while he waits for her… because girls like smart, bookish men, right? Right? RIIIGHT? Nearby, Ricky mentions Anton gets some weird ideas in his head sometimes, man…

If you wait around next to Anton, Marsha will eventually wander by, and he gets a little heart floating above his head. Heh heh, that girl just walked by here again! Two more times… If that girl walks by here two more times, it means she's the one! …But what if she doesn't walk by again? Oh man, will she? Won't she? Will she, won't she? After Marsha passes by again, Anton swears that if she comes by one more time, he'll say hello to her. She's like a goddess to him… celestial and untenable, but captivating in her beauty! Marsha mentions that guy standing in front of the market has been staring at her for a while now, and it's very uncomfortable!

Marsha pauses on her third round, and if we go speak to her on the corner, she mentions that the guy over there has been staring at her again. She can feel his eyes on her, all the time! It's just so creepy… She doesn't want to get anywhere near him! Oh, are we bracers? What a relief! She feels a lot safer with us around. She shudders, and figures maybe she'll find another route to take for running her errands… Standing around all day, ogling people… that's just rude, you know?

When Marsha passes him by a third time, Anton cheers - yes! That makes three! He's seen her three times now, so he feels like he needs to thank someone upstairs. Thank you Goddess! Thanks to us, too, incidentally - and here, take this, as a token of his appreciation! He then gives up our final Carnelia book - the Finale. (That was actually surprisingly elaborate…) All right, Anton decides, it's time to man up and say something to her! He's so going to talk to that lady today! Ricky thinks Anton is a pretty happy guy, sort of, but he can't figure out what's got him so stoked…

[Carnelia - Finale] - A Legacy Never to be Forgotten
I was swallowed by the light only to be spewed moments later onto a patch of hardened ground. The air was filled with the scent of sun-baked earth. Yet, for being the floor of some grandiose, heavenly estate inherited by those in the afterlife, it felt quite like the flagstones I had grown accustomed to in my past life.

Upon feeling around in my immediate surroundings, my searching hand found soft locks of disheveled hair. It seemed as though Sister Carnelia had come as well as I to meet our creator firsthand.

Gradually, as I lay there, I felt something warm swell within the pit of my stomach. Weary and spent I just let the feeling spread over me. It was at about this time that the sound of murmurous voices started to fill the air around us. Warm breath tickled across my nose and brow, letting me know that I was being stared at directly in the face.

As my eyes adjusted to the intensity of the light, I realized that I was looking into the face of a young girl who beamed back at me brightly with the widest of smiles. However, she seemed a bit young to hold the esteemed position of the Goddess.

The knell of a bell overhead rang out loud and clear. Strangely, it had sounded exactly like the cathedral's distinctive toll. Taking in this series of events to be rather odd, I picked myself up, and at last, awakened from the dream which had temporarily invaded my senses.

There it was, the familiar cityscape, the sounds, and even the scent of the breeze. I knew the place by heart. It was the public square of the Imperial city which unfolded before the great cathedral of the Septian Church.

I opened the fingers of my right hand and stared down at the metallic lump in its palm, entrusted to me by Micht. Golden filaments of light swirled across the surface of the artifact. I instantly recalled Sister Carnelia's words. 'It's alive,' she had said. And as I watched the ancient light gradually fade away before closing my hand around its surface once more, I believed it.

Supporting each other by wrapping our arms around one another's shoulders, Sister Carnelia and I hobbled and limped our way toward the magnificent cathedral as the awe-inspiring figure of the Goddess, Aidios, stood silently with unfurled wings, watching over us from the deep-hued stained-glass window above. And as for the events which followed, they were all settled in an orderly fashion.

The metallic lump which Sister Carnelia had so daringly risked her life for was turned over to His Eminence, the cardinal, who presided over the cathedral. He disappeared with it through the thick open door of a sacred vault.

The level of corruption which had spread like a plague among members of the Imperial court, influential aristocrats and even commissioned officers in the Imperial Army astonished even those mediators acting on behalf of the Bracer Guild.

I stayed close by Sister Carnelia as she was laid out on a pew within the chapel of the cathedral. The real sisters of the church delicately pulled off her coat and cut open her vest, now stuck to her body with dried blood. Upon doing so, they found an ornate shirt of chain mail just beneath the layer of her clothing, which for some strange reason seemed to bewilder them all.

The next day a certain aristocrat, who had hired the Jaeger Corps to carry out his selfish bidding, agreed to relinquish the artifacts in his possession in return for keeping his estate. Hence, his collection of forbidden antiques were brought under the safekeeping of the Septian Church.

Sworn to secrecy, I made immediate arrangements to take leave for the Calvard Republic. My destination: a high-class resort, which turned out to be an excellent way to recover physically and mentally, as well as forget about the series of events which had occurred over the past few days. Naturally, the bracers assigned to provide my escort were none other than Clayton and Pavel, who before we left, guided me without a word to where Sister Carnelia was resting.

I talked with Sister Carnelia, who had awoken for a short interval, but as I got up to leave she reached out her dainty hand and said to me, 'Before you go, I want to tell you my real name. It's Ein. Ein Selnate.' I took her unblemished hand in mine and gripped it firmly as I expressed my appreciation for what she had done.

And today, now three years later -- I stood staring at her name once again, but this time, printed on a page of the Imperial Chronicle.

'Ein Selnate.'

Below those printed characters ran the few lines of an unembellished article.

'Yesterday, a corpse was discovered in an urban area of the capital just before dawn. The body was found to be covered with multiple stab wounds. -- The departed, in life, had been involved in charitable work and brought salvation to many afflicted souls in various regions throughout the land.'

As I read the last line, I envisioned the deceased figure of Sister Carnelia lying motionless upon a darkened street. Yet, despite the blood-stained face I envisioned in my mind, I saw her as she rested in peace, a gentle smile crossing her face, and vindicated of any transgressions in life.

As I rolled up the copy of the magazine in hand, I brushed my hand lightly across the shining bracer emblem pinned on my chest. Almost two years had passed since I converted to my new line of work, which Sister Carnelia had so graciously recommended to me. And finally, I had even become used to using my real name.

'Toby,' came the whisper of Sister Carnelia as it resurrected in my ears.

Now only known as Toby, I pressed my forehead up against the cold, clouded window of the passenger car, the refulgent eyes of Sister Carnelia shining brightly like a carnelian stone, forever ingrained in my memory. In my mind's eye I watched as her coat sleeves trailed out behind her and she dashed away into the darkness of my memories.

Opening my eyes, I gazed out through the window glass. And there, I saw the bleeding rouge-colored illumination of the Imperial City, as it faded away beneath the heavy white fog.

(THE END)

A soldier patrolling outside the arena says that today's the championship, is it? He's looking forward to a quiet shift. Another mentions he was up late last night on patrol, so he didn't get a lot of sleep.

At Edel Department Store, Edel herself mentions that the Bose Market is a very crowded, extremely high-energy place to work. You have to constantly revise, maximize and improve your business and sales sense, or you're toast!

Danton says that with all these crazy things happening around Bose, Ruan, and Zeiss, the only places free of craziness right now are Rolent and… well, here! Hope he didn't just jinx us… Terell mentions that at first he thought he'll just get her a plate or something, but she deserves a little better than that! Lily observes that the weather is nice today, so that should sell her some drinks.

Midee says her sister has low blood pressure and has trouble getting up in the morning! That means she has to suck at selling tea, right? Right? Kitty delivers her fifth rule in the Guide to Savoring Delicious Tea: Steep the leaves! Tea leaves release all their bitterness before the real flavor starts a-flowin', so patience is key! If you wait too long, though, it'll get bitter again. You need to find the 'butter zone', so to speak. For long leaves, you'll want to wait just over three minutes, and for short leaves just under. Steep the leaves! It's very important we don't forget that when making our cup of delicious tea. Sienna says that maybe she should just stop shopping and go eat something! Everywhere she goes, though, it's just crowds, crowds, crowds! Sophina says she's going to the cathedral in the West Block sometime this afternoon. It should be fun!

At the History Museum, Licia heard that the final bout is today, right? She really wishes she could go watch the fight… Santos tells us that Professor Alba got a ticket from the director for the final match of the competition. He wishes he were so lucky! Guess it doesn't matter, as it's not like he has any time for that, with his workload as it is! The Museum Director says he was so looking forward to the final match, too… He's going to Bose, see, since he has a meeting with a scholar who's a specialist in ancient studies. He's got to catch an afternoon flight, so regrettably he won't be able to go to the tournament today. He didn't particularly want to part with it, but he gave his ticket to Professor Alba.

At the Landing Port, Finella says that whenever the airships are late now, she thinks back to the sky bandit incident in Bose… She doesn't think her heart could take another incident like that. Tiffany mentions that the next ship in should be the Cecilia. They need to be ready for it! Carnero says they were finally able to get an airship out of port today…

Mechanic Payton whispers that just between him and us, he heard from his friends in the factory that Professor Russell's been kidnapped, and Tita along with him… He has a feeling that won't last long. You can't keep a man from his post, so he'll escape and make his way back… He knows he will. The Royal Army Soldier at the Arseille says he's so tired… Isn't his shift over yet?! If things keep up like this, he won't have gotten to see any of the Martial Arts Competition this year!

At the Orbalship Corporation, Filder says that thanks to the army and those sky bandits in Bose, airship business is in the red. All news is bad news these days, and he's sick of it! Sasha heard today's the last day of the competition. It's all astoundingly lively around here, especially considering they just had themselves a terrorist incident!

North Block

Becker mentions that soldiers keep stopping him for questions, and honestly it's making his delivery job take three times longer than it has to! Noel muses that today is already the last day of the tournament - time sure does fly, doesn't it? Guess that means she should head to the arena, as today's match seems like it's not to be missed!

Palmer says that it's rumored the Arseille has been seized by the army. He knows the Royal Guardsmen used it for official business on occasion, but it's actually the royal family's ship, isn't it? Also, by the way, Colonel Richard doesn't strike him as a particularly cheery person, and he doubts he's alone in thinking that!

At Hotel Roenbaum, Fritz notes that today is the day of the tournament championship, is it not? Do please take care out there… We may be assured that he will be cheering for us. At the large house next to the cathedral, Helmuth says that there's bad tidings - bad tidings! His wife hasn't been home since yesterday afternoon! What if… the terrorists kidnapped her? What then?!

At the southern house, Marian wonders if her husband doesn't realize that getting all worked up about it won't actually help anything? Would it kill him to calm down a little and just see which way the wind blows? Helena mentions that actually, she's been fiddling with the arms of Dad's alarm clock orbment. Figure he could use some more sleep… for his own sake, and theirs! …Crap, he's up! Upstairs, Martin declares that it's: 'Un. Freaking. Believable!' How could he oversleep on the day of the championship?! And oversleep so spectacularly, no less! …Why the hell is the sun so high in the sky? Why didn't anyone wake him earlier?! Is he that undesirable to be around?

At Grancel Castle, Private Dan wonders what Lieutenant Schwarz is doing right now…? He's always enjoyed seeing her each day, even if they did speak little more than pleasantries to one another. Private Aluts says the kitchen supplies were just unloaded, and it looks like it's going to be one hell of a banquet!

A soldier outside the hotel muses that the final match is today… He doesn't much care for those Special Ops guys, so personally he's rooting for the bracers. Though if we tell anyone he said that, he'll have us drawn and quartered! Another mutters that if he finds one of the Royal Guardsmen and they put up any kind of fight at all… he's done for! Those guys pretty much wrote the book on badassery! A third soldier patrolling the road declares that Colonel Richard is an incredible man. Seriously, don't we agree? A final soldier apologizes, but he's busy at the moment…

West Block

Sharnelle says that usually on the last day of the tournament, the city is just buzzing with excitement. Wonder how it'll be this year? Peter mentions that last night it seemed like they'd increased the numbers of soldiers on patrol. It sucks to have all the stores closing down so early during the Martial Arts Competition… Private Datten saw that the border garrison had come to participate in the tournament, but they seemed troubled that they couldn't get in contact with General Morgan. Hopefully nothing is amiss at the Imperial border…

At Grancel Cathedral, Archbishop Currant tells us that the princess typically comes for a visit around this time of year, to say a prayer for Her Majesty's birthday, as we might imagine. This year, though, he's yet to see her. He imagines Her Majesty's illness must be keeping her busy… Cisna tells us her prayers today have been with Her Majesty - that she may recover quickly from her ailment.

Sister Ellen asks if we got home all right yesterday? Estelle stutters as she confirms we did, then softly asks Joshua how she is supposed to talk to her, knowing she's really Lieutenant Schwarz? Joshua suggests trying 'like you always have.' Ellen wishes us good luck at the tournament! Sister Noah has been thinking of hosting a bazaar at the cathedral after the Queen's Birthday Celebration. If it is to happen, however, they'll need to begin the preparations now. Bishop Reval mentions that like the Bracer Guild, the Septian Church has smaller branches all across this land. Naturally, this cathedral is only one of those branches.

At Baral Coffee House, Baral welcomes us and asks if we would like to try a cup of their famous espresso? It'll wake us right up! Connor sighs in relief, and says a cafe ole (presumably café au lait?) does wonders for morning drowsiness…

At the Liberl News Service, Sariah wishes us a good morning. So, today's the big day, no? The day of the championship match! Dorothy's already gone - she snatched up her camera and ran off to the arena. She seemed unusually focused! The Editor-in-Chief wishes us good luck with our final match today. Dorothy should already be at the arena getting photos. Faults says that Dorothy only just started, but she's got a ton of initiative… She's a real shutterbug, snapping photos of everything from tournament to restaurant cuisine - and all of them look great! He thinks the real hero here, though, is the editor brave enough to hire a girl like her… Noticia mentions that the Intelligence Division is always breathing down their necks, which doesn't help them one bit, that's for sure! They're almost like the MP of the Erebonian Empire…

At the house next to the cathedral, Dalia mentions that the master of the house has not even contacted them, which seems exceptionally strange. She hopes there are no… complications. Katrina admits that she seems to have lost all contact with her husband - which is no surprise, she supposes, what with Her Majesty having fallen ill. She just can't shake the feeling that something terrible is happening… Rianne is standing outside her house, and says her Grandpa didn't come home this year, and he isn't even in the tournament! Why does he gotta be so boring? She's gonna play outside!

Lakeisha has thought about it, and they haven't been on a date for… who knows how long! Phelio says today he's going to watch the Martial Arts Championship with his wife. Hopefully it will inspire him to get motivated, or motivate him to get inspired… Seagaro tells us that today he's headed to the cathedral for his prayers. He must finish all this cleaning before the morning is through! Duncan complains that it's not just the port, but also the Erbe Royal Villa that's closed to the public. It's been such a long time since they've been allowed to go into the castle, too… The only real bright spot amidst all of this has been the Martial Arts Competition. He just wants everything to go back to normal.

There's also a pair of soldiers around. One near the cathedral says that one of the purdy nuns said 'hello' to him! He feels all funny inside! All right, time to keep peace in the royal city… A second one near the Liberl News building says some girl took his picture as she was leaving just now. She said he was cute!

Grancel Area

At Sanktheim Gate, Private Wolpe mentions that the Royal Guard and the Special Ops Unit are supposed to be equally tough. He'd hate to be under attack by either one of them! Private Olnis says that lately it seems like the chief's been worrying about something. Guess there's plenty to worry about when you're in the Royal Army… CWO Dale heard that Intelligence's Special Ops Unit is looking for only the best soldiers to recruit. Of course, it begs the question of whether such elite troops are necessary. It's not his place to inquire, but lately he's noticed…

Tammy is arguing with her mom, and says that you can't live life by being all smiley and friendly. She thinks she needs a man who's willing to take charge of her! She'd know at least he'd care what she was doing. She kind of wishes sometimes there was a man here who would you know, push her around a bit. Talia wishes her daughter would stop gossiping about boys and just pick herself a nice boyfriend. She's positively scandalous!

Private Wayne heard the tournament finalists are a team of bracers versus a Special Ops team. Those guys in Special Ops are pretty tough though, so his money is on them to win it. Warrant Officer Talbot says that the lack of a statement from the queen regarding her illness has also been troubling. What's going to happen with the birthday celebration? Sanders is betting that Tammy is goofing off somewhere again. Oh well, it doesn't matter. There ain't anyone around anyway. Private Chesley says the finals should be starting. Since he's in the military, he's kind of cheering for the Special Ops team to win it.

At Gurune Gate, Private Stoll notes the Martial Arts Competition ends today, but until the terrorists are found, they won't be able to relax. Private Barranco says they've been seeing a lot of the Intelligence Division's Special Ops Unit in the area over the past several days. If they don't find the terrorists by the queen's birthday, he's going to be really worried!

CWO Robin mentions that according to the rumors, the terrorist that claims to be a bracer is quite skilled! Since they wouldn't stand a chance in a one-on-one battle, they've got to think of a security measure so that the soldiers can coordinate together.

Private Anden mentions that the Intelligence Division has begun to patrol this area. They're different from the Royal Guard, though, since they use strong-arm tactics and are arrogant to the core. Makes him wonder who the real terrorists are here… Warrant Officer Graves heard the Competition ends today, huh? He's sure they'll get some new orders from the royal castle any time now. Sam figures that with the queen's birthday celebration approaching, he's sure customers will start to filter in. Emily tried to cook a new recipe, but it didn't turn out that well. She figured if things went well, she could add it to the menu. Eh, she'll try some other recipes when she gets some more free time.

On the wall, Private Selbourne notes that today is the finals for the Martial Arts Competition. He should have guessed that the Special Ops Unit would make it to the final round… Though he doesn't want to admit it, they're a tough bunch. On the roof, Private Thomas says it's pretty tranquil around here. Gazing out on this peaceful scenery makes it hard to believe that any terrorist incidents are happening within these borders…

I don't drink tea at all, so I've been wondering: Is this little subthread actual good tea advice?

Trails in the Sky (Part 78) - Championship Showdown

Championship Showdown

Before setting out for the next match in the tournament, we have another sidequest to complete by quickly grabbing it off the quest board - and unsurprisingly it's to head into the eastern sewers to slay another Grancel Sewer Monster down there. Riveting. We have to find some 'Bone Fish' and slay them to complete this task. And loot the place bare, naturally. We can use the key we got from Elnan at the guild to enter the eastern entrance of the sewers, much like we did in the west. This area is more than a little convoluted compared to the western side, granted, but still doable…

Side Job: Sewer Monster (East)
A few levels down (and through somewhat dizzying sets of nondescript rooms) we find our extermination target - the Bone Fish are pretty ominous-looking.
[Boss: Bone Fish*4]
These guys are really easy, actually - they're very weak to fire, and generally pretty flimsy, which makes them rather a pushover. They can freeze people, I guess, but when I ran across them they died to a combination of AOE moves long before they got any sort of rhythm going.
Turning this in at the guild grants us 3000 mira and 8 BP.

There are a couple of nice loot-chests down here, some of which have enemies in them - one of these contains the Cestus, and another the Hawkeye - good weapons for Zin and Olivier respectively. We can also loot another Gladiator Headband to charge up our CP reserves even quicker. In my wandering I also come across an obvious switch - hitting this opens up a secret wall which connects the western and eastern sewers together, which mostly just serves to give us a quicker exit from this place. There is still at least one chest that cannot be reached, so I assume we will be coming here again in due time…

We head over to the Grand Arena once more, and for a third time in a row we're relegated to the blue room to the south. It's rigged! Estelle sighs as she concludes it'll just be us in here - this waiting room feels awfully big right now! Estelle admits it is pretty large - team sports events and circuses alike used to be held here. That was back in a time when gladiators fighting monsters was a man's only source of entertainment. Estelle thinks that's interesting, and guesses that would explain the size, if there were circus animals in here. Olivier remarks that it certainly doesn't measure up to an Imperial opera house, but even so, it's about the size of an outdoor concert venue. That's… certainly acceptable! Estelle says that he'll have to excuse us for being less gaudy than Imperialists…

Zin comments that we have gotten here a bit early, so we've still got a sizable chunk of time left before the match actually starts. Estelle complains that waiting around for the match to begin really does get kind of boring. Joshua suggests taking a walk around the grounds for a little while to fill the time? That works for Estelle, and she quickly tells our other teammates we'll be out for a bit. Zin just tells us to be here in time for the match.

After we leave, the camera lingers. Olivier looks after us, and Zin admits that this is a new turn of events… He thought for sure that Olivier would go with us! Olivier remarks that he just gets the feeling that something's changed between the two of us. A step forward. Zin calls Olivier Mr. Observant, and agrees that we've definitely been feeling some pressure from the matches, but we seem more relaxed today. Oh, to be that young again, eh? Olivier wonders if we are ready for the feelings that well up from within us? Even if we're not… the feelings are surely ready for us! Ha ha… Such delightful awkwardness! He looks forward to what comes of it. Zin admits he just really doesn't get Olivier…

Outside the room, Estelle shudders as she scowls. Joshua wonders if something's wrong? Estelle confirms that she's okay, but she just got the chills all of a sudden. Like someone was talking about us or plotting something… Joshua can guess who that was…

If we step back into the waiting room, Zin asks how we propose we go after those Special Ops guys? They're not going to give us any openings… The only chance we have, he believes, is to target their commanding officer. If we take him down, openings are sure to follow. Olivier says there's still time before the match begins, you know, so we should go. Make the most of the next few hours. Explore. Discover. Experience… together. Estelle shudders and muses that she needs to go wash up now… At the front desk, Clark says there are a lot of people watching us out there. No pressure! We should just do what we're gonna do, and do it well. Good things will come of it. Sunia declares that the time has finally come. Break a leg, guys!

In the first box in the stands, a spectator mentions that Joshua looks about as old as his son, so he thinks he'll cheer him on. A second muses on the face-off between Royal Army and Bracer… Both of them fight to protect people as part of their jobs. Now, he guess we'll see who's better at it!

A third says that she was so excited for today's events that she couldn't sleep one wink. A fourth spectator declares that he's gonna shout himself hoarse! A fifth says he'll cheer for the bracers, since they're always there to help when people are in need. A sixth is just generally cheering for the Martial Arts Competition - it's always so much fun! Every year he gets so into it. A final spectator really thinks the Special Ops team is a thoe-in this year. Just their name alone has such an awesome ring to it!

In the second box, a spectator thinks that if teamwork is the deciding factor, then Special Ops have the championship in the bag for sure. A second would never have predicted the match-ups to go in the direction they did! A third just asks for them to get on with the show, ya whippersnappers! A fourth recalls that there's a girl on the bracer team, right? Good for her! A fifth mentions that she and her husband love watching the tournament every year. A sixth says it's time to start cheering! A seventh wonders if maybe she should have packed a lunch today? She was in line from such an ungoddessly hour, she's already hungry again… A final one says that two first-year teams made it to the finals, both poised to win it all. Which will it be?

In the third box, a spectator wonders who will win? It's going to be amazing! A second yells cheerfully that it's the championships today! WOOO! Another says she likes that blond boy on the bracer team. He looks laid back, but he's got such a quick draw! A fourth says he wants to see the masked guy and the big guy go at it head-to-head. That'd be something! A fifth says everybody came super-early because it's the finals. Guess they figured the seats would fill up fast, and they did!

Speckled among the stands are a few named characters, too. Troy asks us who we think will win? Dick hopes the match starts soon. Patty mentions her husband went through a lot to get them some good seats yesterday. She can't believe he did that all just for her! Anelace says our opponents are tough, but we should be able to take 'em, no sweat. Break a leg out there! They'll be cheering for us like we wouldn't believe! Grant says they're all here to root for us today. We're representing the Bracer Guild out there, so we should be sure to make them proud! Carna tells us to just relax and do what we've always done. There's no pressure.

Besides the random spectators, we can find a few familiar faces in the stands who we need to talk to to progress the story. First, we can find Professor Alba here, and we wonder if he came to watch us? Alba confirms that of course he did! We've always been such a big help to him. He owes us at least that much! Estelle thanks him, but wonders how he scraped together the mira for a ticket? Alba admits that was actually a lucky break on his part. See, the museum director had some sudden business to attend to, so he couldn't make it today, so he's here in his stead. Estelle says she should have guessed he'd never be able to get in here out of his own pocket! Alba points out that doesn't mean he wouldn't try, of course. He's sure he could find a way, if he put his mind to it. At any rate, he's here. He'll be shouting our names for sure! Knock 'em dead!

In the far corner we can speak to Kurt, who grits his teeth in pain. Estelle wonders if something is wrong? He notices it's us, and guesses it's time for the final match? We should give it all we've got, okay? Estelle promises we will, but then comments that Kurt really doesn't look so good there. Everything okay? Joshua agrees that he does seem pale. Kurt assures us he's just a little light-headed, that's all. Though it is kind of odd… He doesn't feel sick, so why is he lightheaded? He thinks he's having a… flashback… Estelle wonders if it's about yesterday? Kurt explains that no, no, it's from an accident he had about three months ago. Seems he screwed up on a job and messed himself up pretty bad…

Estelle questions what he means by 'seems'? Joshua concludes that he means amnesia, doesn't he? Kurt confirms that. It's kind of embarrassing, and perhaps even a bit cliched, but he actually doesn't remember a thing about it. Or didn't, anyway. He still can't even remember what job he was doing that got him hurt in the first place!

The doctor said it wasn't shock or anything, but offered no other explanations as to what it could be… Joshua stares at him, while Estelle says that's quite a story… Was he still okay to participate in the match, even in that condition? Kurt points out that there isn't anything physically wrong with him. In fact, he's feeling a lot better just talking it over with us. In time these flashbacks will take shape, and he'll remember what happened. We shouldn't worry about him, okay? Estelle guesses that, okay, if he says so… Joshua admits that Kurt is indeed starting to look a little better than he did minutes ago. He should be careful, okay? Kurt assures us he's fine, and wishes us luck. We've got to fight hard enough for him, too, got it?

...Okay.

So, it's big-brain theory time again. From what we've learned so far in this game, I can only conclude that Kurt got mind-controlled into doing stuff, which is why he doesn't remember what happened. Don Capua and the Ravens have the exact same symptoms, after all, so that's no big leap. Also this mysterious mission happened three months ago, huh? Which would be roughly the start of the game, going off some comments people made, so maybe he's related to why Cassius vanished? Hold on, I think I just made another connection there - recall that note that sent us on our wild goose chase with the Black Orbment? That was sent to Cassius by someone with the initial 'K.' I thought it might have been Kloe (for some reason) but it being Kurt would make way more sense… If Kurt was mind-controlled into sending that message, though, that implies the heist in Zeiss was a setup from the start, doesn't it? The orbment was supposed to get delivered to Professor Russell by Cassius, but we ended up doing that job for him instead. Curious.

Anyway, let's leave that to cook while we talk to Dorothy. She's in her usual press seat, and breathlessly remarks that we made it! The final fight, it's so exciting! Estelle tells her to take deep breaths… Come on now, do it with her! Joshua says that if she doesn't relax and keep herself still and focused, she won't be able to get any good shots. Dorothy says we shouldn't worry about that! She takes her best pictures when she's all hyped up like this! They're more natural, you see. Joshua guesses they would be…? Estelle concludes Dorothy is some kind of savant or something. Dorothy asks us to stop flattering her. Now come on, we should show her what we got!

When we're done in the stands - by which I mean after we've talked to Alba, Kurt, and Dorothy - we can return to the lobby to spot someone who just entered - it's Mayor Klaus from back in Rolent! We wonder what brings him here, and he laughs and says it's good to see the two of us again! Scherazard told him that we'd gone traveling all over the kingdom, and we've certainly grown up nicely in the time since we last met! Joshua thanks him, while Estelle admits she can't speak for herself, really… Anyway, he seems chipper as always, which is kind of refreshing to see!

Klaus laughs and says he won't let us young folk beat him just yet! He hears we made it all the way to the championship in this big Martial Arts Competition, huh? He may be a little old for such things, but he came to watch. Estelle wonders if he really came all the way from Rolent just for that?! Klaus admits that, actually, he got an invitation out of the blue to a dinner party at Grancel Castle. He only arrived in Grancel this morning, by way of an airliner.

Estelle is surprised, but Joshua gets it - that invitation came from Duke Dunan, right? Klaus confirms that, and says he was originally planning to attend a birth ceremony for this married couple and then journey here, but this lady officer approached him out of nowhere and told him that he was invited to this dinner party. Estelle can guess who that was, and Joshua agrees it had to be Captain Amalthea.

Klaus remarks that his wife, sadly, isn't much of the traveling sort, so he didn't have much choice except to come alone. Estelle is disappointed that she's not here… Joshua comments that, actually, there's a chance that we may also be attending that dinner party! He quickly explains that the duke has stated the winner of the competition would receive a formal invitation. Klaus thanks us for the explanation, then admits hardly seems appropriate to call for a dinner party when Her Majesty has taken ill. Still, if we two will be there, he might not feel quite so awkward. That just means we'll have to try that much harder to win! We promise to do the best to meet his expectations, and Klaus says he'll go find himself a seat, then… Best of luck!

After Mayor Klaus departs, Estelle says she can't believe he's going to be at the dinner party, too… Will Mayor Maybelle be there too? Joshua agrees that it seems likely. There will probably be a lot of influential people in attendance. Estelle isn't too pleased, but figures we just need to focus on winning our match for now, and we'll see everyone there, later. Joshua agrees that sounds good, and he also mentions that it's almost time for the match to start, so we should return to the waiting room now. If we swing by the stands real quick, we can see Klaus found a seat. He tells us that he hasn't watched the Martial Arts Competition since he was a young man. Good luck out there!

We make our way back to the waiting room, right as the finals are getting started - Duke Dunan walks out to his usual perch, but this time he's joined by not just Phillip, his long-suffering butler, but also both Colonel Richard and Captain Amalthea. Estelle points this out, and Joshua guesses that maybe he's here to watch his subordinates compete…? Zin hasn't seen Richard before, and concludes that's the Royal Army's darling of the public, eh? He's handsome enough, and well-groomed. Looks like the capable sort. Estelle guesses that's true… Olivier muses that doesn't seem to bear much resemblance to when he saw him in Bose, at least in terms of character. What, indeed, can one do? He supposes that he is worthy of being considered a rival to the great Olivier Lenheim… Estelle doubts Richard is worried about that, while Joshua just tells us to focus - it's starting!

The chairman apologizes to everyone for the long wait, as usual. This arena has been abuzz with preparations and fighting for the better part of a week now… and it all culminates right here, right now. Which team will seize ultimate victory this day? Without further ado, he presents the fight card for this, the championship match! South side, blue team: From the Calvard Republic. Captain is Zin! North side, red team: From the Royal Army Intelligence Division Special Forces. Captain is 2nd Lieutenant Lorence!

Estelle declares that all right, we're up! Finally… Olivier trusts everyone is ready to put everything into this? Zin declares that for tears or for laughter, this is it… Game faces, guys! We dramatically walk out onto the field to meet the Special Ops team, already present. One of the Spec Ops guys mutters that everyone they've fought so far has been about as tough as tapioca… Another mutters back that half of our team is a pair of rookies. He doubts we'll be able to stand up to them… 2nd Lieutenant Lorence chuckles, and whispers that they shouldn't be so sure. Both of those rookies are part of the Bracer Guild. The others admit that, right, they've been readying up on them… Lorence says that's good, and tells them to stay focused, and not to underestimate us.

Estelle wonders what these guys are grousing about over there? Olivier tells her to just let them be. If they're covering their faces like that, he can't imagine they have much in the way of self-confidence. Since they lack his dazzling good looks, there's probably a lot of sniping and backbiting in their ranks. One of the Spec Ops guys overheard that, and wonders loudly what the hell that's supposed to mean?! Another announces that he'd have us know that he's considered very attractive to women! (...Riiight.) Joshua addresses Lorence, much to Estelle's surprise, and mentions his sword technique… No, never mind - best of luck. Lorence huffs and says the same back. Estelle is confused, but Zin tells her not to let their talk get her all depressed. We're about to start!

The referee announces that we will now begin the final match of the Martial Arts Competition. Both teams, to your starting places! Ready…! May Aidios be with us. Begin! Final Match time…

[Boss: 2nd Lieutenant Lorence, Special Ops Soldier*3]

These guys are no joke… unless you know what you're doing, in which case they are hilarious. See, while these guys are very strong, tough, and are immune to a lot of things, they're not actually immune to confusion. Lorence is a beast who hits with huge attacks, but if you confuse him and he fights on our side, he basically starts massacring his own boys. These guys also like to bunch up (particularly after Zin taunts them) which makes them easy targets for AOE attacks like White Gehenna. At this point I also have enough CP-regenerating items that I can pull out several S-Crafts without much trouble, particularly given that we had a dungeon to build it up in before this fight. Chaos Brand OP! There's a few other quirks to this fight, incidentally - Lorence can create a body double, for example - but I mostly steamrolled this.

After the last enemy goes down - a regular soldier, in my case - the battle is declared our victory. One of the soldiers says it can't be… They're the best of the best that the Special Ops have to offer, so how could they lose…? Lorence curses - bah, they're beaten…?

Estelle yells in wild excitement - YAHOOO!!! - while Joshua stares in disbelief at the downed opponents. We won, we really won… Olivier huffs and gasps and says he's exhausted. Zin, though, seems displeased at the situation, but says nothing. Wonder what that's about…? The chairman announces that the winning team will be blessed with a few words from Duke Dunan.

Soon the duke and his retinue join us on the grass, and the chairman announces that Zin Vathek will be representing the winning team. Could he please come forward? Zin steps up, and Duke Dunan admits he looks even bigger up-close! Are all Easterners so huge? Zin admits he's a little outside the ordinary. He just ate well, slept well, and trained diligently ever since he was young. He is the way he is because he tends to think about everything very carefully and deeply. Dunan laughs and says he sees now! He likes Zin, so he'd present him with the prize of one hundred thousand mira, and the invitation to the dinner party!

Zin thanks him very much as he takes possession of the prize. Dunan then declares that Aidios shine her light and glory upon Zin and his friends! As for his beloved citizens - let's hear a big round of applause for the victors!

In the red team's waiting room, Colonel Richard chuckles and remarks that this was an interesting conclusion, he'd say! Captain Amalthea huffs and says that Lieutenant Lorence truly has no shame! His Excellency must surely be ashamed to see his men beaten by such rabble. Was all his posturing just for show? Lorence says he is, indeed, shamed…

Richard tells Amalthea to come on now - she needn't criticize him so. Truth be told, he himself asked Lorence to hold back. Amalthea is shocked, so Richard explains that it would behoove any member of the Intelligence Division not to put all of his strengths on display. In this instance, it works to their benefit that the others win the championship.

After a moment, Captain Amalthea remarks that she sees what he's getting at. His Grace, too, seems taken with the Easterner… He'll serve as an ample distraction. Colonel Richard muses that it's a pity… If Lieutenant Schwarz or General Morgan had participated, the show would have been far more dynamic. Amalthea chuckles and says that surely he jests? If he truly wanted the tournament to be more dynamic, perhaps he should have participated himself? The likes of Julia are no match for his strength, after all!

Richard argues that she shouldn't think quite that highly of his skill with a sword. He doubts he would be able to defeat Lorence here if he fought as he could, either. Lorence says that's hardly true - he believes he somewhat overestimates his strength. He's nothing but an unrefined former jaeger in a soldier's uniform. Richard begs to differ, as he has confidence in his ability to judge the strength of others. Just about the only person he could see being able to fight him on equal terms would be 'him'... Lorence doesn't respond to that.

Captain Amalthea muses that speaking of that guy… His children will shortly be entering Grancel Castle. Shouldn't they be taking some sort of steps to deal with them? Richard tells her to leave them be, though - they'll honor their arrangement with the duke. Besides, it's far too late for the Bracer Guild to cause them any real trouble. Amalthea isn't so sure, but Richard just turns to Lorence and asks how far along he'd gauge the plan's progress? Lorence says 'just over 90%, sir' He's certain he will be able to guide him to their destination within the next few days. Richard says that's excellent! He dramatically steps towards the light, and declares that a new dawn fast approaches for this kingdom, and even if he must endure the stigma of treason, he shall pave the way for the glorious morrow!

We return to our party outside the arena, where Estelle says that now that was one hell of a fight! Phew… She had no clue that Lieutenant Lorence was so freaking strong… Joshua thinks we got lucky, and even now he finds it hard to believe we won. Zin says he doesn't like it. When Estelle asks him about that statement, Zin says it's nothing… More importantly, he argues, that fancy shindig is supposed to be happening tonight. From what he understands, it's going to run late into the night, so they're setting up rooms for us.

Olivier thinks that's most generous of them! Rubbing shoulders with all of those stuffed shirts is sure to chafe in the worst way, in uncomfortable places… but dining? Liberl royal dining? The very prospect of such decadence… Look at him! His mouth can barely contain itself. Where is his handkerchief…? Estelle that it's, um, it's getting on his… Aww, gross! Joshua says it's good to see that Olivier hasn't lost his sense of perspective. Olivier agrees, ha ha! Let's be off, then! Off to gorge our souls upon the seven courses of courtly affection!

'Oh, that's the plan, is it?' a voice speaks from off-screen. As Mayor Vander (from the interlude of this chapter) shows up, Olivier remarks that it's surprising to meet him here! Vander calls Olivier a son of a bitch! He wanders all over the place, every damn day, and leaves him wondering what the hell he's up to… Has he gone completely mad? What possessed him to participate in a martial arts competition?

Olivier says that come now, dear Mueller, there's no need to crease his lovely face with such an ill-tempered expression. After all, is it not true that good fortune comes to those who favor those around them with a smile? Vander snarls that HE IS SMILING! Estelle thinks she actually recognizes Vander's uniform, and Joshua agrees that it looks Imperial military to him. Zin thinks he looks like he could be a tough one to take on in a fight, too…

Major Vander turns to us, and remarks that he doesn't believe we've met. He introduces himself as Mueller, just recently appointed as the resident military officer at the Erebonian embassy. He's known this whack-job over here for a very long time. Olivier declares that one might even call them schoolyard chums! Ha ha… We shouldn't fret over Vander's dark demeanor. Without it, his presence wouldn't light up the room the way it does! Vander snarls that he really needs to shut up now! Ah, now where was he…? From the looks of things, this… fellow… has caused us some trouble. As a representative of the Erebonian embassy, he sincerely apologizes!

Estelle assures Vander that it's okay, though - he hasn't really been a bother. Actually, he was a big help to us in the tournament… Joshua asks Olivier if he deliberately tried to keep his participation in the tournament a secret from the embassy?

Olivier says that no, perish the thought, he didn't! He just simply never told them. Vander demands to know how that's any different from hiding it?! Okay, fine. What's done is done. Now, though, they're going back to the embassy - and yes, Olivier is coming with him. Olivier tells him to hold on a moment…! He explains that we've all been invited to a delightful, indeed, wondrous dinner party! Vander thinks that sounds nice. Too bad he won't be attending. He's going to be confined to the embassy for a little while. Olivier wonders if he's serious? Vander wonders when he ever jokes?

When he realizes this is happening, Olivier declares that oh cruel fate… Truly it drives a knife into his very heart! The promise of this dinner party has been all that's helped him maintain his will to live… Estelle admits that she actually feels kind of bad for him, now… Zin wonders if it's really such a big deal if he lets Olivier go to the party? Joshua also asks for the reasoning here. Olivier is thankful for us backing him up - he knew he could count on us! Ahh, but how lovely a thing is true friendship… Such warmth and affection, as opposed to the cruel frigidity of his schoolyard chum… Vander remarks that we don't really understand just how serious this is. Try to picture this: a dinner party, populated by royalty and its influential guests from across the country… and also in attendance, an arrogant fool who never shuts his mouth because his foot is lodged so far into it. If they found out that this uncouth imbecile was an Erebonian citizen…

We all stay quiet as the horror of that scenario presents itself, and Olivier wonders why his beautiful and gracious comrades have suddenly fallen so silent? Estelle apologizes, but says Vander does kind of have a point. Joshua agrees that his usual behavior might not be appreciated in the royal castle. Zin thinks we wouldn't want to start an international incident, would we? Olivier asks if we'd really turn on him so easily?! Vander points out that the war only ended ten years ago, and relations between the two countries can still be strained at times, so he'll just have to grin and bear it. Olivier asks Vander to please hear him out, and he apologizes that he didn't say anything before, you know, when he… Vander says this isn't a debate, then drags Olivier away while he cries, 'My dinner party! My royal cuisine!'

After our remaining party members all sweatdrop at the scene, Estelle wonders if that's really okay? Joshua can't say he really likes it, but the facts are the facts. Zin that there's nothing much we can do about it now. We'll just have to enjoy ourselves twice as much in order to make up for Olivier not being able to join us. Estelle guesses he's right… Let's get our stuff together, and then go to Grancel Castle, then!

Next: We have an evening stroll through the city before heading to the castle for a rather tense dinner...

I think the hardest line a game has to walk is dealing with an opponent who is supposed to be stronger then the party. Non-multiplayer video games don't really handle players losing well, but using "I've gotten stronger since last time" can make a foe laughable if it happens enough.

Lorence being told to take a dive is helped by having several cutscenes under his belt that steelman the sensation that he wasn't operating at peak performance, as does placing it at a tournament. This is about as a good as "I was holding back last time" gets in a JRPG.

And here I was just thinking I should ask after this. Congrats on winning the tournament, and also thinking way harder about the background conspiracy then I did when I was playing.

What really makes it work is

The fact that you fight him again later and

1. It's 1v3
2. It's the hardest fight in the game by an order of magnitude
3. The story progresses even if you lose, so it's not something where you "have" to be stronger than him for the plot to work - its just whether you're a real perfectionist.

Trails really got into a habit of selling these absurd overpowered opponents and then making you fight them but I think Lorence is definitely the one where they really put in the work of selling the player on it.

Got a bit distracted with other stuff, sorry. I had part of this already written up like a month ago... :D

Yeah, no kidding. One of the few fights in this where I was just kinda throwing shit at the walls to see if I could actually win because I did wipe more than I'd like to admit.

Still writing up & editing the rest of the game, but we're approaching the endgame at least, even if the final arc seems rather longer than the others.

Trails in the Sky, where the Prologue is a regular chapter length and the Final Chapter is as long as two others put together.

Zero did the same thing, although Cold Steel 1 didn't preferring to just sneak in another chapter's worth of cutscenes and plot twists after the nominal final boss. First game syndrome I guess?

Trails in the Sky (Part 79) - Royal City Exploration - Championship Evening

Royal City Exploration - Championship Evening

South Block

Finel says this looks like another fine day. He wonders if the weather's this good in Bose, too? Nonna wishes she could have seen the tournament finals, but she's got to work if she's going to support herself! Raleigh says that was almost literally a show-stopper! What a fight! Dick really thought that guy in the red helmet was going to win it all. Troy muses that he didn't even see that red guy break a sweat… Berden heard the winners of the tournament get a banquet at the castle, huh? He doesn't like Duke Dunan very much, but that's still a really nice gesture on his part…

Armand mentions that Grancel City and its castle, standing in the deepening red of the fading twilight, they're all reflected within the liquid depths of Ellie's gorgeous eyes. Ahhh, is there anything more beautiful in all the world? A thousand times no! Ellie exclaims that her sweetie is such a romantic! Gaspard tells us he's had no problems today, which makes him nervous. Seems like trouble's an old friend of his, always greeting him at the door… Latanya says the entire city is abuzz with news of the tournament. No one could have guessed the outcome this year - no one! Tran says that's another tournament done. How's the Birthday Celebration going to go, though…?

At the Fisherman's Guild, Fisher remarks that the weather and water today are absolutely perfect for fishing. After work, he intends to meet his compatriots at the lake. They're sure to catch more than their fair share of fish! Lloyd says that if they don't hurry and catch those terrorists, they'll never go fishing again… this season! For Goddess' sake, Colonel, do something! Percy says he ran across this girl at practice today who might be a great fit for their group. After practice, though, she said she was going to stay behind at the lake and catch some fish.

At Wingard Orbal Factory, Zacharias says it's about closing time, so he looks forward to tallying the day's sales when he closes up the register. Tom says they'll be closing soon, but he's still got to hurry up and try to get these rush-jobs finished. He owes it to their customers! At Weis Arms & Guards, Chaeli says we did wonderful out there, and congratulates us on our victory. That was an incredible match! It was the fiercest fight she's seen in many years, and she was extremely impressed. We can count her among our fans! Shepard notes that the shop has calmed down a bit since the tournament ended. Seems like he can finally relax…

At the Bracer Guild, Elnan has already heard the news - congratulations on our victory! Kurt tells him it was quite a sight to behold! Estelle agrees that it sure was, she guesses… She doesn't think we'd be able to take them in another fight, though. Not easily, at any rate. Elnan remarks that some say victory is equal parts effort and luck, but it seems that the two of us have discovered some secret third influence! With each passing day, one's skills are further honed. As time passes, we'll grow into that victory, and realize we truly did earn it. Estelle wonders if he really thinks so? Yay! He really likes his pep talks! Elnan says we did well in the arena, and wishes us good luck tonight at the victory banquet. Estelle figures we'll need it…

Upstairs, Carna says a big match like that is going to be burned into her brain for a long time to come! Hopefully she can work alongside us one day… Kurt congratulates us on our impressive match as well, and says that seeing us young bracers in action is a pretty big motivator for the rest of them. He can't just let himself get left behind, you know?

In the house next door, Bill remarks that it was a nice match, wow! He doesn't know martial arts very well, but he knows a spectacle of epic proportions when he sees one! Ilene admits she got so caught up in the match that she doesn't even remember getting up on her feet. Oh, dear… In the northwestern house, Patty says that, wow, that finally was a real back-and-forth battle! They had such great seats! And… she found out just how much her husband really loves her. This is the best day ever! Ralph mentions that his wife is doing all the housework today, heh. The trick to winning the game is to subtly nudge your spouse into doing something on her own as if it were her idea, rather than directly asking. Marriage is… a game. A strategy role-playing game with both sides in constant struggle!

At Sunnybell Inn, Cready says that it seems Olivier won't be coming today. She wanted to congratulate him on winning the Martial Arts Competition… Spencer muses that the tournament may be over and one with, but here are still just as many soldiers on patrol… They make him nervous, what with all these rumors about Her Highness being sick. Godfrey congratulates Zin, and says he knew he was a shoe-in from the very beginning. He rules, man!

Miele says he met Godfrey when they were both cheering for the same team at the tournament. After the match, they went out for some drinks. They're going for an all-nighter tonight, whoo hoo hoo! Grant is also having a drink here, and notes that it looks like the band's back together again! Let's see that dance that won us the tournament! Of course, he would have preferred to win it himself… but he's not bitter! He was beaten, fair and square! He suddenly notices we're a man short, and wonders where blondie went? He was quite the sharpshooter!

A soldier on the streets demands to know where those terrorists are hiding?! Another says he's glad the Martial Arts Competition is finished. They can't let their guards down yet, though! A third mentions that guard duty after dark is always nerve-wracking… If we see anyone suspicious, we should let him know! We can't go out of the city, naturally, because Zin thinks we've got more important things to be doing...

East Block

Builna says that was some match, wasn't it? Had her all aflutter! Well, time to go home and get dinner ready… Laone assumed Colonel Richard and Lt. Schwarz working together meant that they'd be safe, pretty much forevermore. Never thought they'd be working together like this. Marsha recognizes us as the ones who won the championship, and congratulates us on an absolutely incredible watch! She's so glad we won it instead of that Special Ops team…

Anton says he just tried talking to that pretty girl who kept walking by here. Know what she said? She told him that a 'leering scumbag like him would never stand a chance with her.' He was like, wow. She could have just said no! He wants to go curl up somewhere and die… Ricky says that watching Anton over there never gets old. Hm, what to do now…?

At the embassies, Private Bergan mentions that Mueller is the most recent Imperial officer in residence at the Erebonian embassy. He's young, but he's a senior officer with quite a bit of rank and decorum. Olivier is, hopefully, behaving himself at the embassy right now. If he knows what's good for him. Private Tact congratulates Zin on his victory. He was rooting for him, but even he couldn't have predicted that he'd end up winning it all! He's made them all very proud at the embassy! Zin thanks Tact and says he actually has some news for the ambassador. See, tonight he's been invited to stay at the castle, so he won't be back until tomorrow. Tact promises to pass along the message, and tells Zin to enjoy himself!

Sorbet wonders if we'd like to try her special sundae? It's one scoop each of chocolate, strawberry, mint, and lemon ice cream! Each scoop represents one of the champions - Zin is chocolate, Estelle is strawberry, Joshua is mint… and Olivier's a lemon! Carla mentions that this woman next to her is an attendant for one of the airships. They're both working mothers, so they hit it off pretty quickly by comparing 'war stories' and such.

Clarice says then when your kids become friends, you wind up becoming friends with their parents. The woman next to her works at an inn with her husband, she explains, and it sounds like harder work than you might expect… Lucia wants to go see the castle! They said it wasn't allowed, though…

At the Arena, Lifa congratulates us on our stunning victory! Gooo team! She wasn't able to see our match, but she heard it was a heck of a thing to watch. She hopes we enjoy our dinner party - it promises some serious deliciousness! Nemo says that he's actually been inside the castle before! Really! Robyn says she cheered so much that her throat is all sore and bloody! Gross, but awesome! …Ow. The tournament is just so exciting! She can't wait for next year's, now!

At Edel Department Store, Anelace is browsing items, and wonders which one to choose…? Ahh, when they're this cute, she just can't make up her mind! She came all this way to the capital, so she might as well enjoy her time here, you know? Danton concludes the finals are over, then? A royal banquet in the castle for the winners… Surprised the duke came up with that one. Terell says he's got to find something nice to give his wife…Lily wonders why they're so busy? Geez… She hasn't even been able to keep up with news from the tournament!

Kitty has her sixth and final rule in her Guide to Savoring Delicious Tea: Drink every last drop when you can, because you never know how long the tea will keep flowing! They call the last mouthful of tea 'the teardrop,' because you'll be crying when you realize there's no more in your cup! Another important tip is to keep stirring your tea while it brews in your cup. This concludes her guide! What do we think? Bestseller material, or what? We should never forget this when we're brewing a good cup! If it's not delicious from top to bottom, it's GARBAGE!

Sienna says that with all the hubbub, there are bound to be some great limited time sales… and she's gonna find them! Hope the price on this one drops soon! Sophina says that tomorrow she's taking an airship back home to Bose. She's looking for a souvenir to take back for her brother… Wonder what would be good?

At the History Museum, Licia says that the tournament is done, and nobody has lost any limbs. She'd call that a win overall! She's a little jealous of Professor Alba, who actually got to see the final match. Santos mentions that the Museum Director has been called out on another project, and he thinks he's in Bose now… Upstairs Professor Alba greets us, and compliments us on our incredible match. Congratulations on our victory!

Estelle goes full 'awww, shucks' and says it was nothing. She wonders how Alba has been? Found the meaning of life yet? Alba says he hasn't done that, though that old text the museum asked him to decipher is coming along rather nicely. He also stumbled upon quite a few books he's been meaning to reference in his research. Overall, it's been a successful day! Still, he has more work than he has time to do it, but isn't that always the way?

Estelle admits she's impressed, but guesses that's the kind of dedication it takes to be a professor… She sure couldn't do it, that's for sure! Joshua chuckles, and mentions that Estelle never could stay in her seat for more than a minute at a time - never mind actually doing research! Estelle says that sitting still always makes her sleep, so she has to move to stay awake! She's like those fish, you know, the ones who die if they don't keep swimming? She has to keep swimming, forever and always, right through this aquarium called life! You know? Joshua gives her a skeptical look, and Estelle tells him to keep looking at her like that! That was poetic, man! Anyway, she's glad Abla's research is going well! Alba says he owes it all to us. He may even be able to publish some results soon!

At the Landing Port, Finella sighs, and remarks that hopefully they can return to their regular flight schedule tomorrow. Tiffany tells us you can really tell that Payton used to work in the central factory in Zeiss. If only he'd become their consulting engineer! Mechanic Payton comments that young people have such drive and ambition! Carnero says they were finally able to get an airship out of port today, and he sure hopes it keeps up!

Near the Arseille, a Royal Army Soldier says they've heard rumors that the remaining Royal Guardsmen have gone underground… Even with their increased efforts, they haven't been able to apprehend a single one of them. All he can imagine is that somebody, somewhere, is sheltering them. At the Orbalship corporation, Sasha is so glad the Martial Arts Competition went smoothly… Filder muses that the duke has assembled a group of very powerful statesmen to serve as honored guests during tonight's banquet. Hope they'll be safe from terrorists!

A soldier tells us he'll be patrolling inside the department store later - that's his favorite beat! A second soldier says he was up late last night on patrols, so he needs to get some proper rest tonight. With the tournament over, he hopes he'll get some leave! A third near the arena muses that the bracers won, he hears. He kind of thought the Special Ops Team would have an edge… Oh well. The bracers won fair and square, there's no getting around that!

North Block

Becker tells us the next issue of the Liberl News is a tournament special, and he can't wait to read it! Noel is surprised it's evening already - guess he'd better start heading home… Palmer says those guys at the Intelligence Division act so smarmy when they start with the questions. You'd think they'd show some modicum of compassion, since they're loyal citizens and all! Especially Captain Amalthea… She's the worst of them all!

At Hotel Roenbaum, Fritz wonders if he may be of service to Madam Estelle? Estelle explains that, actually, we were planning to stay somewhere else tonight. Fritz confirms he was already informed about that by Monsieur Elnan. Congratulations on our championship victory! We should enjoy our excursion, and put all our worries behind us! Joshua figures you have to leave it to Elnan… Everything seems really nicely set-up. At his home, Helmuth tells us he put in a request with the Bracer Guild to find his missing wife, but they just told him not to worry… They said he should wait for her to come home on her own. He wonders if they even bothered writing down his request, or if they basically just dismissed it outright…

At their home, Helena mentions that the team that her Dad was rooting for lost in the finals, so they're going to have a 'good hustle' dinner in their honor tonight… It's to console him, pretty much. Keep him from drifting into a total slump. They always have to walk on eggshells around that man, and it's really, really annoying! Marian says that whenever her husband gets like this, they have to fill him up with food or he basically… explodes. Mentally. Martin is barely coherent, laughing madly at the beautiful sunset…

A soldier patrolling outside the hotel wonders who won the competition…? A second still can't believe it - the Royal Guardsmen, terrorists? Really?! Personally, he doesn't buy a word of it! He doesn't want to. A third soldier heard that apparently the Special Ops team lost the match. Didn't think the bracers would be able to take them, but how wrong he was! A fourth and final soldier says there's nothing to report. His replacement should be there any moment now, though. Thank Aidios!

West Block

Sharnelle mentions that with soldiers everywhere this year, no one seems willing to really 'cut loose', so to speak. Makes the festivities a lot less… festive, if you ask her. Peter says that usually there are people up partying all night this time of year, but he guesses that's pretty well out of the question this year. Private Datten concludes that the tournament went off without incident. Thank goodness there wasn't a terrorist attack or anything!

At Grancel Cathedral, Archbishop Currant muses that the tournament is over. He doesn't know what will happen with the Birthday Celebration, but they'd best prepare for an influx of people, if only as a precaution…

Cisna is surprised when she realizes it's this late already? Time passes quickly when she's lost in prayer. Sister Noah prays to Aidios for being blessed with another day under her divine protection… Seagaro says the archbishop's sermons always ring true, and he wishes more people would come listen to them. Bishop Reval mentions that this year they celebrate the 1120th year of the Grancel Cathedral's history. This place of worship was founded alongside the royal bloodline of the Liberl Kingdom.

At a fairly busy Baral Coffee House, Baral concludes the competition is done, is it? A victory banquet in the castle… lucky winners! Connor mentions that there haven't been any details about the queen's illness, and she hasn't said anything herself, so maybe this is all just an out-of-control rumor? Nana can't believe Lorence lost! So lame! Phoebe says they need to go back to one-on-one fights for next year's Martial Arts Competition. That way there can be an actual Team Joshua for them to cheer on! Dorothy cheerfully greets us as 'Estelle and company' and congratulates us - that was simply an amazing match! She got so many great shots, and she can't wait to show us! The editor told her to go look for Nial, but she's got no idea where he could possibly be! She doesn't even know where to begin…

At the Liberl News Service, Sariah remarks that Dorothy seems to know the team that won the Martial Arts Competition this year. She was practically dancing on air when she came home! The Editor-in-Chief had a question for Nial, but he can't seem to find him. Any idea where he might be? Now that he thinks about it, he hasn't seen him in several days… Not too uncommon in this line of work, though, he supposes.

Faults mentions that his newest article is a showcase piece for all of the most popular restaurants here. Only the culture reporter gets to go to different restaurants and comment on the cuisine. He can't wait to see the look on Nial's face when he tells him what he's getting paid to do! Noticia admires Colonel Richard, but he still doesn't approve of his Intelligence Division or those Special Ops. Especially that captain with the squinty eyes… she can never go two seconds without making some sort of snarky comment!

At the large house next to the cathedral, Dalia wonders where Rianne is? Rianne!? Katrina wonders, oh dear, where has Rianne gotten herself off to…?

In the homes further south, Lakeisha says that her husband claimed he would look for work instead of going to watch the tournament, but she knew he would never keep that promise. So… she broke it for him, and told him they'd go. She's a good wife, damn it! Phelio says that final match was pretty amazing, wasn't it? Yeah! Tomorrow he's rolling up his sleeves and making something new out of his life! In her house, Edel is surprised that her husband Seagaro isn't home yet… Next door, Duncan heard that the duke is inviting the winners of the tournament to the castle for a banquet. If the queen is so sick, how is that anything but a bad idea?! Once again the duke does an exemplary job of making them fear for the country's future…

A soldier marching on the street mentions that he had… a lunch break today! Aidios must surely be smiling upon him! He really needed it too, but why was he the only one to be given a break…? He feels kind of guilty relaxing while everyone else busts their butts.

A second soldier near the cathedral says that even if they should find any Royal Guardsmen, he'd really prefer they not have to fight them. Aside from the obvious conflict of interests of a soldier for the crown fighting another soldier for the crown… they're much better trained! He sighs, and wonders why they won't do us all a favor and surrender already?! A third soldier outside the Liberl News building tells us that normally it'd be time to change shifts, but he's working a double shift tonight…

Next: Let's get ourselves acquainted with Grancel's castle, and see who else has been invited to the party!

Trails really got into a habit of selling these absurd overpowered opponents and then making you fight them but I think Lorence is definitely the one where they really put in the work of selling the player on it.

I think Cassius also lived up to the hype, but I've only played the Sky trilogy so far, and the thread's not there for a while, yet.

Trails in the Sky (Part 80) - Grancel Castle 1 - Tense Introductions

Grancel Castle 1 - Tense Introductions

When we're finally finished with wandering around and stocking up on stuff, it's time to head over to the castle for dinner. As we approach, Zin asks us if we're going there already? Just to remind us, since we're going to be staying there after the party, we won't be able to leave until morning! With the point of no return well-established, we nevertheless elect to go on in. Zin says in that case we should show the gatekeeper our invitations, then! Estelle is not sure why she's so nervous about this, but Joshua thinks it's probably because we don't get invitations to big events like this very often…

We walk up to Privates Dan and Aluts at the castle gate, and Dan warns us that this is Her Majesty's castle, so unless we have official business here we'll need to leave! Aluts recognizes us, and we greet him - sorry about the other day. Dan catches on too at this point, and asks if we're still staying in town, then? Estelle confirms we still have some business to take care of. Joshua explains that we have a formal invitation, so may we pass? The guards are confused, and Zin explains that the invitation was received directly from His Grace Duke Dunan. The two guards are astounded by Zin's huge size - he's a giant! Zin points at his invitations and just asks them to look. See? Written invitation.

The guards take the invitation and read it: 'To Zin and his team: In appreciation for your performance in the competition, you are cordially invited to a dinner party.' Okay, so we were in the Martial Arts Competition. Dan did hear that the winning team was led by a huge Eastern guy… That's us, then? Estelle confirms that he got it, while Joshua says he'd greatly appreciate their help. Aluts figures this makes sense - the head maid did tell them we'd be coming. We're missing someone, though, so what happened? Zin admits it's kind of impolite, he knows, but it doesn't look like our fourth member is going to be able to make it. We're the only ones coming. Dan thinks that's a pity, but no matter. We can go in.

Aluts heads over to the huge doors and announces us - now entering: Zin and company, victors of the Martial Arts Competition! Open the gate! As two thick gates open up, Estelle admires the spectacle - it's like the Haken Gate, but there's something more impressive about it being part of a castle! Joshua bets these gates are more solid, too, since this is the royal castle.

Dan confirms that's part of why it's impregnable. Ever since the nation was established, no enemy has ever broken through the Ahnenburg Wall. The capital has been ravaged by war numerous times as a result of mutinies and insurrections amongst the nobles, but even then the castle held the rebel army at bay, and protected the royal family and the refugees, or so the stories say. Estelle thinks that's pretty neat, and Zin believes it's very much the sort of tale one would expect from a nation with such history. Dan says that we're welcome inside - we should go right on in, where we'll be met by a welcoming party. Enjoy!

We enter, arriving in an enormous entrance hall covered in pinkish white and purple, with decorative plants and even red carpets. Estelle is amazed, and even Joshua agrees that he's never seen anything that compares to this place! Zin says it's not just pretty… It's got history. He can really feel the traditions and rules of the old kingdom here. An off-screen voice welcomes us to Grancel Castle - we are Zin and his team, correct? The speaker enters the frame, and Estelle immediately cringes. Erk - it's Captain Amalthea! Joshua muses that it's not unexpected, but even so… Zin speaks up and confirms that we come at the invitation of the good duke. And uh, she is…?

Captain Amalthea chuckles and apologizes for not introducing herself - she is Captain Kanone Amalthea of the Intelligence Division, head of Grancel Castle's defense. She'd like to extend her heartfelt congratulations for our championship victory. Watching that match was truly a spectacular experience. Zin says she is too kind, really. And if he may say so, he didn't know they made women as young and pretty as her into captains! She must do fine work! Amalthea muses that he is a flatterer… but she's not as young as Zin's bracer friends. As she narrows her eyes, our party members look back warily…

Amalthea recalls that we are Estelle and Joshua Bright, correct? It's been some time since the incident in Zeiss, hasn't it? Estelle and Joshua agree - quite some time… Amalthea admits that unfortunately the matter concerning Professor Russell is yet to be resolved, as it appears that he and his granddaughter were abducted by a group of nefarious individuals. We wouldn't happen to know anything about that, would we?

Estelle hastily says that she's afraid we don't, while Joshua calmly explains that we left that case up to the full-fledged bracers and came to Grancel. We've never even heard a follow-up report about it. Amalthea chuckles and says that's truly a shame… Well, with the resources of the Intelligence Division, it's only a matter of time before the culprits are arrested. We should have no fear on that score… Estelle wonders to herself what the hell is with her…? Joshua just says we understand, and trust her to take care of the professor. Amalthea says she'll absolutely handle that…

Anyway, for the moment she should show us to our rooms. She turns to the maid that accompanied her and asks Shea if she would please do the honors? She should see to our needs… but shouldn't bore us with any idle chatter. Does she make herself clear? Shea hesitantly confirms that she understands, ma'am… Amalthea chuckles again - good, very good. She tells all of us to have a pleasant evening. For her part, she must bid us farewell!

As she walks off, Zin remarks that wow, now that is one fine woman! Estelle, annoyed, hates to say this - but Zin's taste in women is crap! There's nothing 'fine' about that fox-faced harpy. Joshua suspects that might just be his favorite type of woman… Zin laughs and says he just ends to find that women like her turn out to be pretty good people, once you peel back a few layers. So to speak. Estelle just tells him he's hopeless… Not that it matters, but he really does sound like a dirty old man sometimes! Zin cries out, 'Oh, my honor!' in horror.

Shea hesitantly speaks up, and Estelle quickly apologizes for… that. She was supposed to show us to our room, right? Shea confirms that, and apologizes for not saying this before, but her name is Shea, and she's a maid here at the castle. She'll be at our service this evening, from the dinner party until the morning. If anything is not to our satisfaction, we should not hesitate to let her know! Zin thanks her, and Joshua wonders if she could lead us to our room, then? She confirms - it's on the second floor. We then frogmarch up the stairs towards the upper level, where Estelle is amazed - oh, wow… Get a load of that chandelier! Talk about classy… Joshua tells her to hush, and wonders what's up that way? Shea explains it's the Throne Room, where the queen receives personal guests. It hasn't seen much use in recent days, though…

Zin asks if the queen's condition is really that bad? Isn't the Birthday Celebration coming up soon? Shea stutters that n-no, it's not that - it's just that it's the head maid who tends to her in the Royal Keep of late. She shouldn't speak on subjects about which she's unfamiliar… Shea then leads us to the west wing of the palace, where we pass a few doors before stopping at a pretty arbitrary one in the northwest of the hall. This is the room where we'll be staying - we should please go on in. We head inside, and Estelle proclaims 'Holy Stregas!' Joshua says he never imagined we'd ever stay in a place like this… Zin thinks this place is niiice. It will make a good story for later!

Shea remarks that there is still some time before the party. We're free to explore the castle, but the security areas are off limits, and she'd ask us to refrain from entering those. Estelle wonders if she could be a little more specific? Shea says that most significantly, the Royal Keep where the queen resides is forbidden. It's a small palace of sorts built on the Garden Terrace on the roof. Estelle thinks that place sounds nice… Shea explains the terrace is where Her Majesty greets the people of Grancel from during the birthday festivities. Anyway, we can't go into the keep itself, but we can still visit the terrace if we like. Other restricted areas include the Royal Guard Room and also the Treasury.

Zin thinks the Royal Guard Room is off limits because they're still wanted for questioning about all that terrorist stuff. Shea confirms that, and says the Intelligence Division is currently occupying it. Entrance is restricted, so we should please abide by the rules. Joshua asks what the others who were invited are doing, by the way? Shea says they've already arrived, and she imagines they're relaxing in their respective rooms. Estelle recalls that Mayor Klaus is here, too! Shea agrees that he arrived a while ago. Anyway, if we'll excuse her, she'll be off… If we need anything else, we should please contact the first floor waiting room.

After Shea leaves, Estelle and Joshua exchange a look that goes unnoticed by Zin. Estelle tells him that we want to go and walk around the castle for a little bit, but we'll be back before the party. Zin thinks it must be nice to be so young, as he's worn out after the tournament… No problem, we should have fun! Him? He's going to kick back and relax in this oh-so-luxurious room.

We set off, and just outside the door Estelle muses we need to get as much done as we can before the party starts. First, Julia told us that we have to talk to the head maid, Hilda. Joshua remarks that he'd like to say hello to the other invitees, too. We likely know most of them…

In the room across from us are a few familiar faces - Mayor Klaus of Rolent greets us and is glad we made it! Dean Collins is also present, and says it's been quite a while! Estelle is surprised he's here too. Was he invited to the banquet as well, then? Collins confirms he arrived today via airship from Ruan. A little mayoral birdie told him that the two of us won the tournament. Jill and everyone else will be so happy to hear it!

Estelle thanks him, and Joshua admits he had no idea we'd be seeing him here. Klaus explains that Collins is a member of the Royal Assembly, and a man of great respect in Liberl. It's only fitting he be given a seat at the table. Dean Collins remarks that the mayor flatters him with such praise!

Estelle asks what the Royal Assembly is, exactly? Joshua informs her that it's a meeting held once per year to address matters affecting the kingdom. The queen, mayors of every city, and other representatives all come together to try and solve various problems of state. Estelle thinks that sounds big… So, all of those guys have been invited here tonight, too? Collins would say only about half are present, actually. Her Majesty is still ill, and General Morgan is away on official military business. Also, Mayor Dalmore of Ruan was arrested in that nasty affair, and then there's Professor Russell… Klaus agrees that he's a bit too entrenched in too many unknowns right now. They don't know how true all this talk is about the Royal Guardsmen being involved in some underground terrorist organization…

While Estelle and Joshua exchange knowing looks, Dean Dollins muses that they can at least use this chance to see where Duke Dunan stands on all of these issues. They need his permission to have an audience with Her Majesty, regardless. Klaus confirms that's the biggest issue here, without a doubt. Barring them from seeing the queen is the height of idiocy and mismanagement! He would like to pay his respects to Princess Klaudia as well, but it's the same story!

Estelle recalls that's the queen's granddaughter, right? Joshua asks if she lives here in the castle? Klaus says that actually her residence is elsewhere, in his understanding, but he's told that she's come to the capital as of a few days ago. Estelle concludes she's here, then? She'd love to meet her! Collins is sure she'll have a chance.

In the room next to our own, we find another old acquaintance - Mayor Maybelle of Bose and her maid Lila! They are quite pleased to see us, and Maybelle says we're here at last. She kept wondering when we'd get here, and was practically counting the seconds… Estelle is a little confused - wait, they were waiting for us? How did they know we'd be coming?!

Maybelle explains that she heard from Mayor Klaus. He told her about a pair of children who entered the tournament, won its championship, and were invited to a grand royal banquet in the castle. If she'd known, she would have canceled her appointments and come to cheer us on! Lila says that, begging her pardon, that would have been quite impossible given the circumstances… Maybelle snaps back that yes, she's aware. She was trying to be polite!

Estelle chuckles and tells her not to worry - she knows how busy the mayor must be. Maybelle remarks that she's sure the queen has no time to waste at a banquet, what with everything else going on, so what is Duke Dunan thinking?! That captain was so stubborn about inviting her, too… she had no real choice but to accept! Joshua guesses she means Captain Amalthea, and Maybelle confirms that's her. Her words were polite enough, but she gave her the evil eye while she spoke them, and Maybelle dared not refuse her request!

Mayor Maybelle then mentions that she hasn't heard from General Morgan in a while… Joshua asks if she hasn't gotten any word from Haken Gate, then? Maybelle explains that 'the general is unavailable' is the longest message she's been able to wring from them. It would seem he's busy with these 'anti-terrorist counter-measures', or what-have-you. She had hoped he'd be in attendance at this banquet tonight, but she guesses he couldn't pull himself away… Estelle just looks sad at this…

Joshua asks what the mayor thinks about all of this? Putting mayors from every city in the same place, at a time like this… Maybelle muses that if the queen were to be in attendance, she'd expect some announcement of no small importance. As it is, this feels like the duke has too much time on his greasy, chubby hands… He's letting his position of royal proxy go to his head. Estelle dryly agrees that sounds about right. Joshua figures there might still be some kind of official announcement, right? Maybelle muses that whatever may come of the night, the grand chef here is the best in the kingdom, so she plans to enjoy dinner, pay her respects to the queen, and return to Bose post-haste.

In the east wing we can find yet another familiar face - Factory Chief Murdock! Estelle remarks that she thought he might be here. Joshua agrees that with mayoral-class individuals on the guest list, we had a feeling he might also be in attendance. Murdock admits he never expected the two of us to win a tournament championship and end up hobnobbing in Grancel! Cassius' kids to the bone, we are! Estelle says that it took more than our upbringing to get here. Lots of people helped along the way. Joshua notes that it's been a few days, so have there been any developments?

Murdock tells us that, well, right after we left for the capital, Captain Amalthea from the Intelligence Division came knocking. She forced him to come to this banquet, but he kept his mouth shut about Leiston Fortress. Professor Russel and company are still on the run, too. The Army hasn't found them yet. The longer they keep this up, though, the less chance they have. It's really only a matter of time… Anyway, he asked Amalthea if he could see Her Majesty and wish her well, but no luck. He was flat-out refused. In other words, we definitely aren't going to be able to do this the easy way. Estelle agrees, but he shouldn't worry… We've totally got that covered! Joshua promises that we will get the professor's message to Her Majesty, one way or another…

In our room, Zin says he's so hungry! Usually by this time he's already in some bar, stuffing his face… Isn't our food ready yet? He's literally salivating thinking about this full-course dinner! It still bugs him, by the way, Olivier's absence… Not that there's anything he could have done for him… If we head just west of our room we can find a library. Libra is in charge there, and wonders what those people at the Intelligence Division are up to, taking important documents without official permission…

Mayor Klaus is honestly confused why they'd be holding a banquet now, under these circumstances? He can't fathom why the duke would allow this. It's in poor taste, at the least! Dean Collins wonders whether we were able to meet with Kloe? He'd heard we made some kind of promise to meet at the capital, but he wasn't sure if we'd actually done so… Estelle admits that no, even the guild has yet to hear from her. Joshua concludes she should be at the capital by now, no? Collins agrees that she should be. Still, though… it bothers him. She probably just dropped by the check on the orphanage before setting off for the capital, but even so…

Mayor Maybelle complains that Duke Dunan is such a nuisance. When the duke came to Bose before, he acted like a spoiled child. She received so many complaints from the citizens he angered! Lila informs us that her mistress has been looking forward to seeing us again. We should please come visit her in Bose again sometime soon.

Down the stairs and to the west of the entrance we can find the administrative room. Tooker tells us as much, and explains it's the place where most of the 'ruling' of Liberal actually happens. With Her Majesty ill, they're taking orders from… the duke. Dayan mentions that with so few people, they can't possibly finish all this work! All the other officials were sent away 'on vacation' by the duke, and forcibly removed from the castle.

If we try to leave the castle, one of the Special Ops Soldiers on guard tells us that the gate is currently sealed to help ensure security. We should feel free to walk around the castle for the time being, and they're sorry for the inconvenience, but nothing can be done. To the east we can find another soldier who explains that we've arrived at the Intelligence Division's office, and only authorized personnel are let inside. We should keep our distance unless we're keen on getting arrested.

If we head downstairs we can reach the cellar, which has a peculiar large door in the back which is firmly sealed. Curious… We can also find another Special Ops Soldier guarding a small staircase. He explains that this is a restricted area - the treasury, presumably - and suspicious individuals can and will be arrested on the spot. We should watch ourselves…

In the dining room, we can speak to a few maids working on preparing the meal. Ekle tells us why all these guests are really here… It's because the duke got bored, that's why! That man makes so much work for her, she swears… Nage wonders if she can help us? Sorry to be rude, but she's very busy right now preparing for the banquet! Sorella says that, just between her and us, the duke keeps trying to convince Mistress Hilda to hire more servants, even though he has enough. To no good end, she's sure! Primrose just passed Duke Dunan in the hall a moment ago, and she hates how he just stares at people menacingly. It's so rude!

In the kitchens, Folk mentions that the head chef is a real pro, specializing in imperial cuisine… Over one thousand dishes of it, in fact. He's simply amazing! Regis complains that the rat problem around here is starting to get out of control. He can't stand rats, either, so this really sucks for him! (And we're eating here?!)

Head Cook Gervais apologizes, but they're not ready for us yet. He's afraid they're still preparing dinner at the moment. Once it's done, though, they'll make sure everyone knows. Until then, our patience is greatly appreciated! In the nearby maid quarters we can find Shea again, who wonders if everything is all right? Estelle says everything is fine, she just wanted to look around the castle a bit. Shea says she understands, and tells us it'll be a bit longer before dinner is served. In the meantime, we should look around to our heart's content!

In the east wing, Factory Chief Murdock mentions that the Intelligence Division has eyes everywhere. We'll have to be more subtle in our movements… In the eastern bar area, Revol tells us this is a place to talk, so we should please come right in! For drinks they have anything we can think of, be it alcoholic or non-alcoholic…

In the eastern wing we can find a staircase heading up, which leads us to the Garden Terrace - and as the name suggests, it's essentially the roof of the castle which has been converted into a terraced park of sorts with various sections of higher or lower elevation, several trees growing on top (somehow) and a large red carpet descending down from the keep to the point where, presumably, the queen greets her people.

As we arrive, Estelle is amazed - check that out! Joshua remarks that we can see the whole lake from here, and it overlooks the town, too. Must be great for reconnaissance! Estelle sighs, and says that as nice as this is, we really don't have time to stop and enjoy it. We've got a job to do.

Walking along the red carpet towards the keep, we're stopped by a pair of Special Ops Soldiers who ask who we are? We explain we're here as guests of the duke, and wonder if this is where the queen lives? One of the soldiers says that of course it is. For the last few days she hasn't been feeling so well, though, so she's not seeing anyone right now.

Estelle argues they've got it all wrong. We weren't even thinking of that! She just thought it would be amazing if she were to even take notice of us… Joshua asks if Princess Klaudia sleeps here as well? One of the soldiers answers that, it's just… The other stops him from saying whatever he was going to, and he quickly changes his answer. The princess is focused on looking after Her Majesty. (Yeah, convincing…) Anyway, neither of them have time to deal with the likes of us.

A woman's voice from inside the keep inquires what's going on here? As an older lady steps out, the two soldiers are surprised - they didn't know she was back already! The middle-aged woman tells them the dinner party will be starting soon, so she will be returning to the maid quarters. Who are these guests? The Special Ops guy informs her that we're from the team that won the Martial Arts Competition. It's only because of that victory that someone of a bracer's social standing would ever be invited here!

Estelle wonders what that means, but the woman's reaction is rather more explosive: 'Such discourtesy!' she bellows.

He would insult those who were personally invited to the royal castle? The soldier tries to backtrack, but the woman insists that those invited by the duke should be treated with all the respect due to those invited by the queen! She sincerely hopes he hasn't forgotten that. The Spec Ops guy meekly agrees that he understands… Estelle muses that this lady really is intense! Joshua wonders who she is…?

The Special Ops soldier argues that they can't just allow these people to pass! Surely she understands the reasons that the colonel laid out? The woman agrees, and she's quite tired of hearing them repeated to her. She turns to us, and apologizes terribly for all of that. Security has been heightened, and as such the Royal Keep and its surroundings are off limits. If she may ask, would we mind waiting in our room until the dinner party begins? We hesitantly agree to do as she asks, and apologize - we weren't trying to make any trouble. The soldier huffs. Fine then - don't let it happen again! The middle-aged woman stares daggers at him, and he quickly wishes us a safe return…

We follow the woman down the steps, where she apologizes to us for being subjected to such dreadful behavior. She explains that she's the head maid of Grancel Castle, Hilda, and she oversees all of the housekeeping duties. We had a feeling that was the case, and Hilda is a little confused. Hmm? Forgive her rudeness, but are we previously acquainted?

Estelle hesitantly says that, uh, someone told us about her. We hand over Julia's letter, and wonder if she sees now? Hilda recognizes the handwriting… Joshua adds that we also have our bracer emblems and identification with us. Hilda nods, then tells us to please come with her to the maids' sitting room. We can discuss the matter further once we're there.

We travel over to the maids' room, where we share a drink as Hilda confirms that she understands. We need to deliver Professor Russell's message to Her Majesty, correct? Estelle confirms that's true. If now is not a good time, we can try later, but… Hilda says it's not an issue, but those Special Ops men have had the Royal Keep under constant surveillance for some time now. Only the duke, the colonel, and hired attendants like herself are allowed inside. Estelle concludes that a private audience is probably a no-go, then. Joshua wonders what Estelle thinks of asking Hilda to relay the professor's message to the queen? Estelle admits she'd really rather speak to her face-to-face. There are just too many particulars we don't know that we'd really need to discuss directly… such as what Duke Dunan and Colonel Richard are after.

Hilda muses that she's had a bit of an idea… Could she get us to return here once the dinner party is over? Estelle wonders why…? Joshua guesses she's thought of a way for us to see Her Majesty? Hilda believes she has, yes. It may be difficult, but she thinks it's worth a try. She's going to need some time to get ready, so can we return after the dinner party? Estelle thinks this is pretty awesome, and Joshua promises we'll be back then. Hilda says she'll be waiting. Food prep is done, so she thinks they'll begin serving shortly. For now, it's probably best to wait in our room.

Hilda mentions that the pre-cooking is done, so they will be starting the banquet shortly. We should wait in our room, and they'll call us when the time comes. Shea is in the back of the room and says they'll be ready for dinner very, very soon. She's very sorry for the wait! In the kitchens, Head Cook Gervais announces that the main course is… complete!

Next: Time to air some national secrets over dinner, in front of those couple guys who beat up people real good! Villain speech time?

Colonel Richard, fortunately for everyone, went to the James Bond Villain school of antagonism.

Founds a secret unknown Intelligence Division which does shady stuff everywhere, but then also dresses them in the most eyecatching gear imaginable and keeps sending them on errands where they need to be bailed out by his outside contractor Lorence. Gives his goons an incredibly recognizable airship and advanced weapons, then spends the majority of the game trying to retrieve an item that the people who have it don't even know is being looked for. Then kidnaps the princess right in front of the entrance to the city, and literally just takes over the castle with his goons while bulshitting together an excuse about sickness while simultaneously planning out a weird marriage-plot for some reason? This guy...

You are gonna be in AWE of the subtlety of the main bad guy of Trails in the Sky SC.

And I will say that the "marriage-plot for some reason" does make some degree of sense given the split decision on Liberl's succession. Princess Klaudia is young and female and the Erebonian Empire has a surfeit of imperial princes and ducal heirs of an appropriate age they could potentially use to swoop in and take over Habsburg-style, through marriage. And even if she was passed over in favor of Dunan, the claim would still be there and could be used by foreign actors.

If your whole motivation is being a paranoid nationalist, but you still want to maintain the institution of the monarchy under your control, that does need to be addressed.

Trails in the Sky (Part 81) - Grancel Castle 2 - The Duke's Dinner

Grancel Castle 2 - The Duke's Dinner

After we're done wandering around the place, it's time to check in with Zin in our assigned room. He mentions we're late! The party is about to start, you know… Estelle apologizes, and claims we just got so caught up in sightseeing that we lost track of time. Plus, we also talked to all the mayors! Zin remarks that we sure seem to be well-connected, huh? Joshua explains that we're close friends with the mayor of Rolent, and we've met the others in the course of our travels. Zin acknowledges that our work as bracers has caused us to meet quite a few big shots, then. We sure get around for junior bracers! Estelle agrees that's the case all right… Has he done any bracer assignments since we came to Grancel? She guesses it's not all that different in other countries, right?

Zin confirms that for a full-fledged bracer, nationality isn't an issue when it comes to our work. The prelim fights and the legal procedures at the embassy kept him too busy to get any actual work done, though. There are four other bracers on duty, though, which isn't too bad… Joshua agrees that would normally be enough to handle most cases, he imagines, but with all of them concentrated in Grancel, that must make it tough to handle any cases in other regions. Zin agrees that might be the case, and Estelle complains that ugh, it feels like a goose just walked over her grave… Wonder what's going on with Schera, back in Rolent? Zin recognizes the name - she wouldn't happen to be talking about Scherazard, would she?

Estelle is surprised Zin knows her, and Joshua clarifies that she's actually our mentor, and has been a close friend for ages. Zin laughs and says that makes sense, then! He met her a long time ago when a case brought her to Calvard. She was fortunate to have a good master working with her from such a young age. Estelle wonders about this 'master', and Joshua whispers that yeah, that's probably dad…

It's at this point that Shea enters the room and announces that the table for the dinner party has been set. May she show us the way? Zin figures that sure, it was getting boring just waiting around anyhow. All right, wanna go eat fancy? Estelle confirms that the championship left her starving, so let's go dig in! Joshua tells the other two that it would be nice if they didn't completely forget their table manners for once…

We move to the dining room, where the three of us are on one side of the table, with the three mayors of Rolent, Bose and Zeiss on the other side alongside Dean Collins. Estelle confirms this is a dinner party, right? What's with all the empty plates, then? Plenty of knives and forks, though… Joshua explains this is a formal dinner, so everything comes out in a specific order, starting with hors d'oeuvres. You use the knives and forks from the outside in. Estelle irritably wonders if that's really all part of having good table manners? Agh, and here comes the anxiety attack… Mayor Maybelle remarks that it's really not so bad. It does mean that we get to have some of the finest food available! Manners and etiquette are secondary. Mayor Klaus agrees, indeed, indeed!

He mentions that he was told we're acquainted with everyone who will be attending, so there's no need to get stressed out! Estelle admits that's true! Joshua asks Klaus not to encourage her… On that note, Maybelle wonders if the gentleman accompanying us is going to be okay with a knife and fork? She's told that folks from the East usually eat with chopsticks.

Zin compliments her for doing her research, but he's a firm believer in the 'When in Liberl, do as the Liberlians do' policy. He's not especially skilled with them, but he will use a knife and fork. Maybelle says that was elegantly handled. She's impressed! He's as much a gentleman as he is a martial arts champion. Zin says she flatters him, while Estelle concludes Zin is still a complete sucker for a pretty face. Joshua figures he's more being polite than a lech, though…

Factory Chief Murdock remarks that, anyway, it seems His Grace is really late. Wonder what he's up to? Klaus agrees with that point. So, if the seat at the head of the table is for the duke, then who might the other one be for? Dean Collins questions if perhaps it is intended for Princess Klaudia? It's at this point that Butler Phillip enters and calls everyone's attention, before apologizing humbly for the long delay. He presents His Grace, the Duke. Duke Dunan excuses himself, explaining that he was in a meeting from which he simply could not break away.

He then introduces the people he brought along - Colonel Richard, commanding officer of the Intelligence Division, and his subordinate Captain Amalthea. He invited Richard here to thank him for his tireless efforts in helping to deal with the terrorist situation. Colonel Richard says it's a pleasure to meet us all, and claims he was quite gratified to be invited to the occasion by our honorable duke. He asks us to pardon his uncouth soldier's uniform and allow him to sith with us. As the duke and Colonel Richard take their seats, Estelle whispers that you've gotta be kidding - we're having dinner with him? Joshua suspected something like this might happen, but it's still unnerving…

We skip ahead in time as the meals are served - when everyone's already a ways into the meal, Duke Dunan cries out that it's excellent, excellent! He asks what Mayor Maybelle thinks of Grancel Castle's master chef? Is his cooking not on par with that found in Bose's Anterose Restaurant? Maybelle agrees it's quite remarkable. The wine selection also perfectly complements the meal, so she almost wants to try hiring him away… Dunan laughs and admits she's not the first to say such things. And what about… Zin, was it? Is the food to his liking? Zin confirms it's excellent. He doesn't have the words to describe the sense of refinement and depth… He certainly believes he could develop a real taste for Liberlian cuisine, though. Dunan is glad to hear it!

Duke Dunan next turns to us - what do we young bracers think? He imagines we've never experienced such fine food in our lives before. Estelle agrees it's extremely delicious. Far more worthy of being associated with the royal family than the person who invited us! Duke Dunan chuckles and agrees that it's a genuine treat, before pausing as he belatedly seems to catch the veiled insult. Joshua, embarrassed, announces that it's certainly delicious food, and says we couldn't miss a chance to attend such a prestigious event as this! He thanks Dunan for the invitation, and the duke laughs and says that's very kind to say! He's clearly already forgotten the faux-pas.

Dunan mentions that he does finally remember what his butler has been telling him about… We met before, during the Ruan incident, so perhaps our fates are linked in some bizarre fashion? Estelle guesses that's true, and concludes to herself that the duke had apparently forgotten about that mess until his butler reminded him… Duke Dunan declares that we should put social classes and ranks aside for the evening! Food is abundant and the wine flows freely, so enjoy to our heart's content! Colonel Richards cuts in and mentions that he'd like to do as they discussed first, if they could…

Dunan agrees that's a fine idea, and announces that he has something important to say to us fine folk who represent the kingdom… He'll use this celebration as the place to make an important announcement. He'll allow Colonel Richard to explain in detail. Richard thanks him, then explains that as we're no doubt already aware, Her Majesty has been in poor health of late. However, she has been recovering and may grace us with a public appearance soon! Mayor Klaus thinks that's excellent news, and Maybelle wonders if we could possibly go and check in on her?

Richard answers that unfortunately she doesn't consider that to be a wise decision at the moment. Within a few days, though, it seems likely that the terrorists plaguing the kingdom will be swept away. In light of that, the queen's birthday celebrations will be held as originally planned. Dean Collins muses that the citizens will surely be happy to hear this news, as they've been looking forward to it. Surely, though, that's not all he wishes to say? Murdock agrees that if that's all, he could have just sent along a message.

The colonel chuckles and confirms that they're indeed correct. Her Majesty is continuing to recover, as was previously stated, but given the gravity of her condition, she has also issued a proclamation. Due to her tenuous health, she has stated that she wishes to abdicate the throne, and turn over royal authority to her nephew, Duke Dunan!

Everyone is shocked and surprised by this pronouncement. Is this true?! Estelle and Joshua conclude that the conspiracy finally makes its appearance. Dunan preens and says he was surprised when Her Majesty broached the subject as well, but her illness has left her quite frail. It is only natural, though… She has ruled the kingdom for forty years, leading it through times of strife and war… all without a husband, he might add. Given that, he wishes to relieve her of the stress of her duties following the festival's successful conclusion. As the heir to the throne, the decisions are his to make…

Mayor Klaus thinks it's all terrible. Is Her Majesty's condition truly that severe? He's ashamed that he never noticed any signs in any of his annual visits! Mayor Maybelle wonders if this isn't something far too serious to discuss at what is supposed to be a casual dinner? Pardon her rudeness, but this all seems to stretch credulity. Dunan huffs, while Richard wonders if Maybelle is saying that she cannot take His Grace at his word? The mayor quickly backtracks, and says she simply means that as an elected official, she doesn't understand why the successor to the throne can't be elected in the same fashion! Factory Chief Murdock agrees that he'd prefer to hear this directly from Her Majesty, if possible.

While Dunan is upset at the lack of trust, Colonel Richard says their unease is quite understandable. Still, he would ask that they try to maintain their composure and allow the pronouncement to continue. As mentioned, he believes Her Majesty will give a formal announcement herself during the festival. Could the mayor be persuaded to shelve their doubts until then? The issue is basically this: once this becomes common knowledge, they cannot know how the citizens will react. That's why he's telling the leaders first… to help stave off any chaos or public disorder before it happens. This was also the decision of His Grace. Dunan quickly agrees that yes, this is true!

Richard points out that the queen's abdication will also have international repercussions. The other nations on the continent will have their eyes on Liberl, and they must be watchful for any action on the part of the Erebonians. Surely, everyone can see why it is necessary to show unified support for the new king? This is the world in which we are all going to be living. Estelle quietly complains that he makes it all sound so rational, and Joshua agrees he's quite the master manipulator…

Murdock summarizes that the official decree will be given during the birthday celebrations, but Colonel Richard thought it would be best to inform the leaders of the country first so they can be prepared for any issues that may arise, correct? The colonel chuckles and is glad to see they've got an understanding. Klaus muses that if all this comes to pass, they're going to find themselves quite busy. Maybelle agrees, and they'll have to announce it to the citizens, too. Dean Collins admits that the duke has a fair claim to the throne - but is there not another who also has the same right of succession?

Colonel Richard concludes that no doubt he is referring to Her Majesty's granddaughter, Princess Klaudia. It is true that she and His Grace have an equal claim to the throne, but it would appear that Her Majesty did not choose her due to her tender age. He must say he agrees with her wisdom in this matter, and he should hardly like to impose such responsibilities upon a girl so young! Duke Dunan enthusiastically agrees, and says that for the time being he believes it would be best for Klaudia to find a fine marriage prospect. Though it's strictly informal, there is already interest from the royal families of a number of other nations. Perhaps a royal wedding could take place as soon as this year! Dean Collins muses that he understands, and if that happens they'll have two major events to celebrate. Klaus thinks Klaudia is honestly a bit young for marriage…

Zin suddenly cuts in, wondering if he may ask a question? Sorry to seem rude, but this doesn't like the sort of conversation they'd want outsiders hearing. Particularly a foreigner. How come they're making this announcement now? Colonel Richard explains that's solely because of the serendipitous turn of events which allowed bracers to win the championship. They'd wanted to inform the guild of this in advance, as well. He's already discussed that idea with Her Majesty as well. Zin nods, and guesses that Liberl's military and bracers are on just as good of terms as the stories say… Richard chuckles and says that's because they lack the military strength of the Empire or the Republic. The harsh reality is that keeping close relations with each other is a must…

Colonel Richards declares that with that the discussion is concluded - do we now understand their intentions? Zin confirms he got it, and that he'll pass on what he's learned here to the guild, then.

We find ourselves back in our palatial room, where Zin admits he's heard some pretty unbelievable conversations in his time, but that was something else! He's a foreigner, so it's not that big a deal for him, but he bets it was huge news for us! Estelle agrees that of course it was! She can't believe things have gone this far already… When Zin raises an eyebrow, Estelle quickly simmers down. Still, what a shame… That food was so amazing, and practically melted in her mouth, though she couldn't tell what that last flavor was… Joshua says that's understandable enough. Anyway, he hints at Estelle that we should go for a walk to work off some of that rich food. She takes a moment to recognize what he means, then quickly agrees that sure, she could go for a little bit of fresh air.

Zin sighs and points out that we played tourist just a little while ago, and now we want to take an after-dinner walk…? He sure doesn't get it. Must be a local thing.

Estelle chuckles and says he is exaggerating a little bit. Joshua wonders if Zin has gone out to take in the sights yet? There is a lot of historic architecture around here, you know… Zin says that if the moods hit him, he may still give it a shot. On the other hand, the kitchen may still have some food left over… Estelle says he's got to be kidding. He's still hungry?! Zin chuckles and says that if she had a blade to his throat, his dying wish would be for some liquor and a snack! He might go and hunt up a bar or something in a little bit.

We walk out of the room, and Estelle lets out a deep sigh. Things have gotten serious! We really have to find a way to get in to see Her Majesty. Joshua says that first thing first, we'll go talk to the head maid, Hilda, like we promised. She probably knows a way for us to speak directly to the queen. As we move out of the left wing, though, a voice calls out to us - it's Colonel Richard and Captain Amalthea, who quickly walk over to us. Richard addresses us by name, then says this is our first opportunity to truly speak face-to face, he believes…?

Estelle is struck dumb, while Joshua smoothly recalls that the last time we saw one another was right after Mayor Dalmore was arrested, wasn't it? He's honestly surprised that he remembers us. Richard realizes that we exchanged only a few words then, but we made quite an impression on him! His curiosity was piqued, so he did a bit of checking up on us. He was quite surprised to learn that we were the children of Colonel Cassius!

Estelle, surprised, wonders how he figured that out? Richard chuckles and tells her she must understand he's not trying to show off the Intelligence Division's capabilities. No, he's greatly indebted to Cassius from their time together in the army. Indeed, more than words can properly express. Estelle stares at him blankly, while Richard wonders if he could persuade us to stay a while and talk? He's been hoping to speak with the two of us for quite some time now. Joshua looks at him suspiciously, while Captain Amalthea seems caught off guard and asks the colonel if he doesn't have a meeting with His Grace planned? Richard waves her off, saying he doesn't mind being a bit late. Anyway, if we are going to talk, why don't we use the lounge…? He'll mix us up a couple of virgin cocktails.

Captain Amalthea immediately offers to make the drinks, but Richard tells her that won't be necessary. He wants her to go to His Grace and inform him that he'll be delayed. Amalthea hesitantly agrees, squinting furiously as he looks between us and the colonel, while Estelle gulps fearfully. She quickly calms down and makes her excuses before walking off, while we make our way over towards the lounge for a chat with our archnemesis. Estelle whispers to Joshua what we should do…? Joshua figures we don't have much of a choice but to follow him for now. We'll be a little late ourselves, but we can talk to the head maid later.

As we shift over to the garish pastel lounge, occupying a couple of purple sofas, Colonel Richard explains that he met Cassisus shortly after he graduated from the military academy. He was assigned to a mobile unit that was under his command. Ever since that time, he's found himself in Cassius' debt again and again, both personally and professionally.

Estelle nervously goes along with story-time, and asks what he thought of her father at the time? Richards answers that, to put it simply, he was a hero. And a master swordsman, to boot. No matter the scenario, he could find a way to handle any number of battlefronts in every direction… It wasn't just a matter of sheer tactics… No, he understood and could direct high-level strategy as well. Quite simply, he was a man without peer. Estelle dryly remarks that if she didn't know better, she'd say they were talking about two entirely different people…

Joshua muses that Richard and Cassius were working together during the Hundred Days war? Richard confirms that Cassius was his commanding officer during that time. Even now, he can still vividly remember the excitement that filled him as they executed his plan that turned the war's tide. Any time he gets to talking about those days, time just runs away with him… This much he can tell us, though: If Cassius Bright had not been part of the Royal Army, Liberl would now be part of the Erebonian Empire. Estelle admits that's kinda hard to believe, no way! Colonel Richard chuckles, and says that as a hero, he had a knack for doing unbelievable things. He left the army immediately after the war, declining even a medal from the queen, so few know of his achievements…

Estelle grumbles that he never said one word about any of this to her! Joshua thinks it's not really the kind of thing you tell your daughter about, so it's not fair to criticize him for that. Estelle wonders whose side he is on, anyway? Besides, why doesn't any of this shock him like it shocks her? Did he already know about all of this or something? Joshua admits he didn't know that Cassius was Richard's superior officer, but he knew the rest… vaguely. Estelle incredulously asks about this 'vaguely'?! Is he an accomplice?! Joshua begs her to calm down, please… It's not like Cassius told him any of it, he just… figured a lot of it out. He told him he didn't feel like it was something worth going out of his way to tell others about. Estelle just doesn't get it. When he gets back, he's in so much trouble!

Colonel Richard chuckles again, and Estelle blushes when she realizes they had an audience to that whole spat. Joshua apologizes for interrupting his story, but Richard admits that seeing us like this is actually a bit of a relief. When he found out that our father was intending to leave the military, he desperately tried to stop him… but it seems that by leaving, he did what was best for himself after all. After losing his dear wife, maybe being with us was all that could help him recover? Estelle and Joshua aren't sure what to say to that. Richard stands up from his couch and thanks us for taking the time to come here. He really can't keep the duke waiting any longer, though, so we'll have to excuse him…

We apologize for making him late, but Richard says we've both told him the one thing he wanted most to know. And thus, he has no regrets… Estelle is puzzled, and Joshua asks what he means by that? The man just laughs and says he's sure wéll have a chance to speak again soon. Cassius might even be with us then, to share in the stories. As he walks off, Estelle wonders who that man was, and what has he done with Colonel Richard?

Joshua wonders what she's babbling about now? Estelle admits it's just weird to hear him talking about Dad that way. She wasn't expecting him to be so… nice. Joshua admits he doesn't seem all that villainous. Even so, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that he's got something up his sleeve. For now, we should probably put the issue of Dad aside. He hates to say it, but he thinks that Richard might have been playing nice because he could get something out of it. He's an intelligence officer, so he probably thinks that fooling a couple of kids is as easy as could be.

Estelle wonders if he isn't going a bit far? Joshua says she might be right… Anyway, she should let him be the one who's mistrustful of others, while Estelle continues following her instincts to believe whatever she thinks is right. Estelle is a little confused at that sentiment, but Joshua just tells her to make sure to be prepared for anything, and not to let her guard down. He'd say a bracer's job is pretty much that, in fact… Estelle promises she'll keep it in mind, and Joshua thanks her for that. Estelle isn't sure what exactly he's thanking her for, still. Anyway, let's get going to Hilda, we're late! She's probably sick of waiting for us…

Starting in the foyer, we can't go into the Throne Room, since there's currently an important meeting being held there - presumably Richard and Duke Dunan. If we were hoping to look around, a soldier tells us we'll have to try again later. In the Administrative Room, Dayan complains about another long workday. Tooker says that even though the duke was Her Majesty's representative, the Intelligence Division was pretty much calling all the shots. If Colonel Richard wasn't around, he shudders to think what might have been…

In the Dining Room, a bunch of maids are cleaning up - Nage says that she's got to get her cleaning supplies cleaned up before she can go home. Home is where the lack of cleaning is! Finished, at last! Sorella says this is just between her and us, but cleaning up after the duke's meals is revolting! It's hard to believe that he, the queen and the princess are all related. Primrose remarks that Colonel Richard is such an amazing man! Pearls before the swine that is Duke Dunan… Ekle wonders where Shea and Mistress Hilda get off to…?

In the kitchen, Regis says he's got to be careful how he stores the food, so those damned rats don't get in it. Which reminds him, do rats really like cheese, or is that just a myth…? Folk sighs, and says he just wants to clean up here and get back home. Head Cook Gervais greets us, and wonders if we enjoyed his cuisine?

In the castle's wings, Mayor Maybelle says this banquet has been quite a shock! Duke Dunan as official successor to the throne… If anything could bring on a migraine, it's that! Lila says it seems it was a banquet to remember… Now her mistress has yet another worry to wrinkle her brow.

Zin says that the food was amazing, but the conversation and flow of wine much less so. If we'll excuse him, he has some lost drinking time to make up for… Mayor Klaus can't believe the queen's so worried she's considering abdication… And then there's Princess Klaudia choosing a husband at her age?! Events are unfolding so quickly he hardly has time to react!

Dean Collins says the colonel's points are all very logical and rational, but he believes it would be best to get the particulars from Her Majesty and Her Highness the Princess directly. In the library, Libra mentions that it seems the castle blueprints are missing too… What do they need with those?! Factory Chief Murdock wonders if we've met with Her Majesty yet? In the lounge, Revol asks if we'd like an after-dinner drink? He can make anything we'd like, on or off the menu.

Next: Time to have that royal audience, at last! Let's hear the other side of the story...

The Brights are sweating bullets the entire time they're talking to their arch-enemy while the Colonel's just looking to shoot the breeze about a old friend of his without anything more on his mind. A pretty amusing contrast, got to say.

Richard's also trying to justify his own actions against his hero-worship of Cassius. He's not really listening to anything Estelle and Joshua have to say, he's using them as a mirror for his own self-pep-talk, or at least that's how I read the scene. It's easy to dismiss kids as people and just project your own expectations on them, especially when you've reached the part of your evil scheme where you think you've got your opposition dead to rights and no one in the kingdom can do a damn thing about your obvious power play, least of all the Bracer Guild.

We set off, and just outside the door Estelle muses we need to get as much done as we can before the party starts. First, Julia told us that we have to talk to the head maid, Hilda. Joshua remarks that he'd like to say hell to the other invitees, too. We likely know most of them…

He forgot to do it the first time, so this is why they needed that second walk.

Trails in the Sky (Part 82) - Grancel Castle 3 - The Queen's Maids

Grancel Castle 3 - The Queen's Maids

Once we've made our rounds, we hit up the maid quarters to find an impatient Head Maid Hilda waiting for us. We're awfully late, aren't we? Estelle says we're sorry about that, but we kinda got caught by Colonel Richard…

Joshua explains that he had some things to tell us about our dad, and he doesn't think he has any idea what we're up to. Hilda recalls that the letter of introduction did mention that we're Mister Cassius' children, she can understand at least some of how Colonel Richard feels. Estelle guess she knows our dad too? Hilda confirms that he used to come here when he worked as General Morgan's aide-de-camp. She'd told that the was a school friend of the late Prince's… of Her Majesty's son.

Estelle doesn't quite recognize who that is, so Joshua explains that this is referring to Princess Klaudia's father. Hilda lays out that he was killed fifteen years ago in a tragic shipwreck. Would that he were still alive today, none of this would be happening… Still, lamenting what might have been is a fool's errand. Evening is fast approaching, so we must make preparations at once. She calls out to Shea, who emerges from the back room, and we recognize her from earlier. Shea thanks us for doing so, and says we look well. She's been told of our current predicament, and Hilda assures us we won't find a more dependable child… She's a great help to them whenever the princess is in the castle. Joshua thinks working with her shouldn't pose a problem.

Shea says that if we're ready, we should change into our uniforms… The ribbons and the headpiece are tricky, so she'll adjust them for us. Estelle and Joshua are a bit confused, so Hilda explains that Estelle will need to dress as one of the maids in order to get into the Royal Keep. A little playing with the hair and she'll blend right in! Estelle gets it, and Joshua admits uniforms don't allow for much in the way of personalization, so it's ideal for sneaking in. Estelle blushes at the thought of herself in a maid outfit. She's been wanting to try one on since we first met Lila! Cute, breezy, and easy to move in… She laughs and says if the uniforms weren't easy to move in, they'd make the cleaning much more difficult! Estelle says they should get that sucker on her already!

Joshua wonders why she's getting so excited? He's glad she's in high spirits, but she needs to remember her manners in front of the queen since she won't have him to lean on this time… Estelle wonders why not? He's changing too, isn't he? Joshua pauses for a long moment, then lets out a baffled 'Err?!' Hilda is puzzled too, but Estelle reminds us that Joshua did play the princess during the play at the campus festival. Is there really that much of a difference between that fancy dress and a maid outfit? Joshua argues that's different - that was a play. He can't appear before Her Majesty in women's clothes... Estelle says he'll be fine! It's not at all shameful or anything. Besides, he made such a gorgeous princess! Joshua begs her not to get into this again. Cut the jokes, please!

If I had a nickel for every time this game managed to shoehorn in an excuse to make Joshua cross-dress I'd have two nickels... which isn't a lot, but it's still weird that it happened twice, right?

Joshua turns to Hilda and Shea to help him out here and say something, but they just look back at him. Anyone…? Hilda clears her throat, then agrees that this shouldn't pose a problem. She asks Shea if she still has that extra hairpiece designed for the princess? Shea confirms she does, though it's never been used. Still, Joshua has that full, dark hair, so it would probably look good on him. Joshua begs them to hold on a second, but Estelle declares that it looks like there's a three-to-one vote, and majority rules! She directs us to the changing room, while Joshua resists - wait a minute, he doesn't remember ever agreeing to changing…! Estelle drags him inside by force, and Joshua grouches that all right, all right, if he has to change he can do it himself… Uh, Shea is not planning on using makeup too, is she…? Hilda sighs to herself. Kids these days…

A few moments later Estelle presents herself in full maid outfit, 'Ta-dah!' - and Hilda is surprised how good it looks. Shea thinks the ensemble suits her very well, and Hilda agrees that such a bright, active maid-in-training she seems, and after only just coming to the castle, too. She certainly has her convinced! With her hair down like that, no one will be any the wiser. Perhaps she'd like to work at Grancel Castle for real when this is all settled? Estelle points out she's already got a job as braces, so, uh… Anyway, time for Joshua to come out here, too! Estelle calls out to him, and he lets out a long sigh… He wonders if there's no chance he can talk her out of this?

Nope, none at all. Anyway, he's just making this take longer. Joshua grumbles that she's impossible sometimes, then reveals himself. For the second time in this game Joshua is going in full drag, and he sparkles as he enters the room. Hilda hesitantly admits that it's almost frightening how good that looks! Estelle thinks it's awesome - the maid outfit looks better on him than it does on her, and she's an actual girl! Shea chuckles and says a bit of makeup can make all the difference in the world. Joshua just hopes she's done…

Hilda figures this'll work, and she'll show us the way to the Royal Keep. We need to make certain to watch her and learn how a maid handles herself. Estelle quickly agrees, then gulps - we're finally going to meet the queen in person! Joshua agrees this is the do-or-die moment. We just have to stay focused and get to the Royal Keep. Estelle snickers and admits it's hard to take him seriously in that outfit, but Joshua just snaps that it was her idea! He can't believe she's got the nerve to pick on…

Estelle apologizes and asks him not to get all mad. She'll treat him to some ice cream later, okay? Joshua huffs that unlike her, he's not obsessed with food. Estelle protests against that, and Shea chuckles. They get along so well, don't they…? Hilda just says we should get going already…

The Special Ops Soldiers in the foyer wonder what brings Hilda out here at this hour? As instructed, the castle gate is currently sealed, to help ensure security, so nobody is allowed in or out without permission. Another wonders what Hilda needs from them? In the Maid Quarters, Shea remarks that Joshua's skin is almost as soft as a woman's! It's absolutely perfect for make-up, and she's actually kind of jealous!

In the kitchen, Head Cook Gervais wanted to talk to Hilda about Her Majesty's diet. Hilda apologizes but admits she can't get into it right now, since she's in the middle of doing several things at once. Later, though, they must sit down and talk, if he'd be so kind. Gervais insists that right now, Her Majesty needs her nutrients - so the pressure is surely on!

In the wings, Mayor Maybelle says it's been a long time since she saw Madame Hilda. Hilda responds that Maybelle looks simply exhausted! The mayor admits there's no hiding anything for her, huh? Ho ho… She had some pressing business to finish before she left Bose, so she hasn't slept yet. Hilda promises she'll have some incense sent to her right away. It's good stuff that should have her out in no time! She believes they just got some in from the East only a short while ago. Maybelle thanks her for her kindness, and asks about the two of us - are we students of hers? Reminds her of when Lila first came to her house… Lila doesn't say anything, but she seems to intuit the situation, and smiles knowingly as she beholds us in maid outfits.

Beholding three maids in his room, Zin wonders what this is…? What magnificent architecture! What fantastic design! And the castle is not bad either. Ah, he shall have to request a room cleaning post-haste! (I'd tell him to get a room, but he's already got one…) Mayor Klaus just asks what brings Madame Hilda here at this hour? Dean Collins is delighted by a private visit from Mistress Hilda herself! A trainee maid inspection, is it? All right, then…

Factory Chief Murdock tells Madame Hilda she looks well. Hilda remarks that he looks fine as well, though busy as ever, it seems! Murdock argues that it's hardly work at all, when the central factory is so full of bright minds! He's glad to hear that Her Majesty is on the mend. Hilda agrees, and she's sure we'll all be able to see her again soon. If there's anything he needs in his room, please feel free to let her know, and she'll bring it right away. Murdock says the good news made the trip here worthwhile, at least…

We make our way up towards the Royal Keep by passing across the terrace and taking the red carpet again. The Spec Ops soldiers standing guard wonder what business Hilda has with Her Majesty at this hour? Hilda declares she's bringing some tea and spoons at her request. The current situation means that Her Majesty is denied the right to even go about her daily life as she wishes, after all. One of the soldiers wonders about the maids with her - he doesn't recognize them. Hilda claims His Grace ordered her to hire on some additional staff to help, and they've only arrived at the castle today. Really, now…?

The first soldier comments that Estelle is pretty cute, and she nervously thanks him for the compliment, while Joshua meekly bows. The first gets the weird feeling that he's met us before, and Estelle worries that we've been made already, but Hilda just cuts in and asks if he always stares so hard at every young lady he sees? She does hope he's not thinking any untoward thoughts! She'd rather think that His Grace and the colonel would disapprove. The soldier insists it's not like that! They're the elite of the Royal Army, they wouldn't do that. Hilda figures that all is well, then - now, will they please allow us to pass? The two quickly step aside - go right ahead, ladies!

Inside, Estelle sighs in relief - whew, that was intense! She thanks HIlda for stepping in there - she's a real lifesaver. Joshua agrees that was well done, and Hilda chuckles and says she's just glad she could help. Now, then, are we planning to change our clothes before going to see Her Majesty? If we'd prefer, she can just show us the way now. Estelle says she thinks she's okay as is, but Joshua loudly cuts in with: 'Boy clothes. Now.'

A few moments later we catch up with our protagonists in another room, and back in their usual gear, and Estelle wonders why Joshua is always so self-conscious, for the love of…? What was wrong with what he had on? Joshua insists it's not an issue of self-consciousness. Changing the subject, he asks Hilda if this room is what he thinks it is? Hilda confirms this is Princess Klaudia's bedroom, though she rarely sleeps in the castle, so it's all but unused. Estelle is surprised, as she heard the princess was tending to the queen. Hilda looks concerned, and Joshua concludes that it was just gossip, then? Hilda looks stresses, and says we should ask Her Majesty for the full details. Her room is on the second floor of the Royal Keep. She'll take us there!

We ascend the stairs to the second level, where Hilda knocks on a set of double doors and asks Her Majesty for a moment. She announces that she's brought the two she spoke of before, Joshua and Estelle. An elderly woman's voice replies to thank her kindly, and says that we may by all means enter. Hilda is pleased, and tells us that she'll wait for us here while our audience is ongoing...

Stepping into the next room, Estelle is surprised to see the elderly Queen Alicia staring out of a window at the far side of the room, wearing a pink-and-purple dress and with lavender hair. I admit, I suspected she wouldn't be here for the longest time, and instead we'd find her locked up or even dead to allow for the nation's takeover, with reports of her survival just to keep the people calm… I suppose the Spec Ops soldiers are keeping her in here anyway, and presumably that amounts to much the same thing, but it's a matter of degree. My back-up option was that they captured Kloe for leverage, which is still entirely likely.

The queen turns to greet us, bidding us welcome with a smile. She introduces herself as Alicia von Auslese, the twenty-sixth monarch of the nation of Liberl.

Estelle answers the introduction with her own, explaining that she's a junior bracer of the Bracer Guild, and Joshua does much the same, before saying it's a great honor to meet her. The queen says she's truly been looking forward to meeting us both. Regretfully she cannot offer us proper hospitality, but she's prepared some tea. Please, we should take a seat and relax!

As we gather around a table with the queen to have our tea, we lay out what's been happening, and relay Professor Russell's message. So, there's a pitch-black orbment capable of negating all other orbal energies, huh? And we're telling her that the colonel has acquired it…? Joshua confirms that the professor told us that she might have some idea of what he intends to do with it. Can she tell us anything? The queen is silent for a moment, then admits she has but a vague idea - but she did not think that the colonel even knew of it. Perhaps she's worrying about nothing, but even so… Estelle asks what this vague idea is, and the queen concludes there is no harm in telling us.

Roughly ten years ago, she explains, a massive orbal reaction was detected beneath Grancel. Professor Russell was the individual who came to investigate it. Estelle is intrigued, while Joshua wonders if this happened in the vicinity of the sewers? Alicia says that no, it happened far deeper underground than that, in fact. Professor Russell was under the impression that it might be coming from a relic of the ancients that still functioned. Estelle is amazed, and Joshua guesses it's a bona fide artifact, then. Most artifacts he knows of have lost their function, like the mechanisms on top of the towers. Every now and again, though, you'll find one that still works - like Mayor Dalmore's family heirloom, the time-stop device. And something like that is beneath Grancel…

Okay, uh, as someone who's played Final Fantasy VIII a bunch and who's caught a couple of semi-spoilery references in this thread... Can the castle freaking fly? There's been plenty of hints that the Ahnenburg Wall and castle and such are ancient structures that were coopted for their modern function, and if there's a giant artifact deep below that's stirring to life, I'm just reminded of that entire NORG segment where the Garden lifts off from the earth and starts gallivanting around the world. The last war in this country was won with airships, so maybe Richard is trying to compound on that by waking up the largest airship ever, some leftover giant equivalent from the ancient people that left ruins all over the place? they did mention finding evidence of a mysterious ruin on the lake floor, and Grancel Castle is built right next to (or on top of) it...?

Anyway, Estelle wonders what that tells us about the Gospel? Joshua concludes that it could be used to halt the artifact's functions. Right? The queen warily agrees. They were unable to establish the nature of this artifact, or indeed why it was buried beneath the city, but it is beyond her imaginings how the colonel could know of its existence. Professor Russell's research on it was kept strictly confidential and off-the-record.

Joshua acknowledges that mystery, but figures that in any event, it seems likely that trouble is on the way. Estelle adds that honestly, just as she starts to think the colonel might be a slightly nicer guy than we were given him credit for, this happens… When someone's trying to stir up some trouble, that's when us bracers come in! We won't let him get away with whatever evil scheme he's trying to pull!

The queen chuckles and says she'd expect nothing less from Cassius' daughter. Estelle is shocked that yet another person knows her dad, so the queen explains that Cassius was a friend of her late son's, and a great savior to the nation. Even after he retired from the army, he would sometimes undertake requests for her. Estelle is surprised, and Joshua didn't know that either… The queen imagines there are a great many things about him that we do not know, including the precise role he played in the way, ten years ago. She assumes we have not been told? Nothing super-detailed, Estelle admits. The queen figures that perhaps this is the role she is meant to play, then… Would we indulge her in listening to an old story? Estelle is on-board, naturally, and Joshua says it's no indulgence…

We flash back to the spring of ten years ago. A tragedy occurred in the southern reaches of the Erebonian Empire… Its cause is yet unknown, so that is something I must omit. The Empire used that event as a pretext for their invasion of Liberl. So began the sad times that would become known as the Hundred Days War. Just as the Empire made its declaration of war, a massive military force breached the Haken Gate. In what seemed like scant moments, all of Liberl became occupied territory, save for Grancel. It is said that the invasion force was three times the size of the entire Royal Army. The reinforcements from Calvard were too late to stop their advance… It was but a matter of time before Grancel, too, would fall.

But two months after the outbreak of hostilities, the war changed in a way none could have imagined. Patrol airships had just been developed and were used to recapture Liberl's checkpoints, severing the Imperial Army's communications. The Royal Army then set about recapturing the major regions one by one using ships launched from Leiston Fortress. Zeiss, Ruan, Bose, Rolent… With their supply lines severed, the Erebonian forces occupying each region were swiftly crushed. And the one behind this plan for a counteroffensive was none other than one Colonel Cassius Bright. It was our father, who was General Morgan's right hand man at the time, as well as Colonel Richard's superior officer.

Afterward, with the intercession of the Bracer Guild and the Septian Church, the war was brought to an end. But it was at this time that Cassius lost what he treasured most in all the world. Lena… Estelle's mother. That clock tower was destroyed in the Imperial Army's vain attempts to hold back the counteroffensive, and what followed she's sure we know… Cassius was not even able to be by his wife's side in her final moments…

Estelle, tearing up, admits she had no idea… Queen Alicia mentions that Cassius believed the military operation that he himself had planned effectively caused her death. Blaming himself, he left the military and took up the path of the bracer. All to stay with the one he had left - Estelle. This time, he swore he would be able to protect those he loved… Estelle sadly calls her Dad an idiot. It wasn't his fault that Mom died. How could he even think that…? Joshua sympathizes, and the queen agrees as well.

Given that all he lost was in service to this country, the queen notes, the responsibility falls on her. As such, she is sorry for failing to protect Estelle's mother. She's wished to apologize for a very long time. Estelle insists she doesn't have to do that either! She's protected the peace of this country ever since the war ended. The peace that Dad and all the other soldiers who defended Liberl in the war fought so hard to protect. The peace that Mom gave her life for so Estelle could live in it. She has nothing to feel sorry for. The queen admits that Estelle has a kind heart, and she is grateful for that. It gladdens her heart to have finally met her in person… Now, more than ever.

However, the queen says, that is also why she does not wish Estelle to put herself in danger. She'd like for her to remove herself from any dealings with this matter. Estelle, outraged, protests - but Julia, uh… Lieutenant Schwarz asked us to help her! The queen thanks us for our willingness to do so, but if some tragedy were to befall us in Cassius' absence, she knows no apology would ever suffice. She asks only that we go back to our home in Rolent and wait for our father to return there.

Estelle is still upset when Joshua coolly cuts in and notes that the peace that Dad restored and that she protects, though it has held firm, now trembles like a leaf in the breeze. If the colonel is able to use the Gospel for whatever purpose he intends, and if he succeeds in making the duke the new king of Liberl, then what will become of that peace? He asks her to consider that. The queen is silent.

Estelle nervously explains that right when we became junior bracers, we inherited a whole lot of work from Dad. After the sky incident, we got that letter and the package, and we've been running all around creation ever since… It feels to us like our Dad's been nudging us in the back this whole time. That's why she wants to defend peace - so that everyone we've met, and everyone we care about, can go on living secure and happy lives. Just like Queen Alicia, and like Mom and Dad, she's doing this because it's what she believes is right. And she really wants to see it through.

The queen is silent again for a moment, then concludes that it seems she was right about Estelle. Estelle isn't sure what that refers to, but the queen just declares that she, too, is ready. She'd like for the two of us to carry her request to the Bracer Guild. We promise to do whatever she asks, of course. The queen explains that her request is for the Bracer Guild to rescue those being held captive by the Intelligence Division. Amongst them is her granddaughter - Klaudia. Estelle concludes that she was right - the princess is being held captive, somewhere!

The queen confirms that this coup d'etat started when she backed Klaudia as the successor to the throne, putting Duke Dunan out of the running. Though he is her nephew, Dunan is possessed of a considerable number of character flaws. In brief, where he is lacking, her granddaughter shines. For the sake of this nation's future, she would have her granddaughter succeed her. Estelle says that she doesn't actually know this girl, but she personally leans towards the idea that her judgment should really be trusted here.

The queen remarks that no matter the era, there will always be those who object strongly to a woman wielding political power. Not to mention, the memory of the invasion by a larger power is still relatively fresh… Some of them will perceive a succession of two consecutive queens to be a sign of weakness. It's hardly surprising that such a notion has taken root in the minds of some…

Joshua concludes that this includes Colonel Richard, then. The queen says that's quite right. Klaudia's pending succession to the throne caught him quite unawares. That, along with his passing of this information to the duke, is what led to this coup. This was all staged so that Liberl would become a strong military power, with the colonel ruling from the shadows… Joshua concludes that finally lets us see the whole picture, then.

Estelle wonders what would happen if Liberl became a militarized country? Joshua says a great many things would happen. Taxes would be levied to fill the war chest, orbal weaponry would be developed with the express intent on causing havoc on a massive scale, and a wide-ranging policy of conscription would be adopted… No doubt contracting jaeger corps would be made legal, which is not the case at present. Estelle is horrified at the prospect…

The queen confirms that the colonel has made very adamant requests that she enact such policies. She thought that such proposals were born out of genuine love for his country, but she never agreed that they were the right course of action to take. The Royal Army is not all that protects this land. We have worked hard to maintain treaties with other countries. Defending a nation goes hand in hand with free cultural exchange and trade with all other nations, to the benefit of all. That sure makes sense to Estelle… The colonel, however, finds such notions to be womanly and foolishly idealistic. So he demanded the queen's abdication of the throne in exchange for Klaudia's safe return.

Estelle is outraged, and the queen explains that many people have actually had their family members taken to ensure they would not dare to oppose the colonel. She is the queen, however, and she will not allow all that she loves about her country to be destroyed simply because of blood ties.

Still, Klaudia is her only granddaughter, and she cannot simply allow her to die… Estelle asks the queen to relax, and Joshua picks up on it, and announces we've heard her request, and will carry it out. We'll see to it that the princess is rescued from those who have imprisoned her. The queen smiles and thanks the both of us. With that reassurance, she will do all she can to oppose the colonel's demands. Estelle wonders if the queen has any other requests? The Gospel still has to be dealt with, and she doesn't think we should just leave her here either! The queen appreciates the sentiment, but the present state of affairs is not contingent on her freedom or imprisonment. The Gospel shall continue to weigh heavily on her mind, for a great many reasons, and for her part she'll attempt to ascertain the colonel's true intentions with it…

A little later, back in Klaudia's room, our party members dress up as maids again to make their way out. Estelle sighs and admits that the queen is a totally awesome person… Super-nice, but with a seriously strong will! She hopes she'll be even one-tenth that cool when she gets old! Joshua can't quite believe Estelle just called the queen 'cool.' Still, she's definitely got what it takes to govern a whole country. Estelle really wants to stop this coup thingy and help her, but Joshua points out that's definitely outside of bracer jurisdiction. First things first, though - we do whatever we can.

Estelle agrees, then admits she's still freaking out about what the queen told us about Dad. She wonders if she's got any more tidbits she'd be willing to share…? This is when Head Maid Hilda asks if we've finished changing yet? Then we should return to the waiting room at once. It's already after eleven o'clock - actually, it's almost midnight. Estelle is amazed it's already that late, and Joshua concludes the queen spoke with us for a long time. If we stay any longer, though, it's apt to make the guards suspicious.

If we head back up before leaving, we can find Queen Alicia on the balcony. Well, now… She takes in our outfits, and admits that she had wondered how Hilda managed to get the two of us in here… Now she sees! Those outfits were a marvelous idea, and we both look quite convincing! Estelle, Joshua… She hasn't had such a wonderful day in a very long time. We must come again for tea. She'd like it if Klaudia and Cassius could join us next time, and we could all have a nice chat together...

Next: It's time to extricate ourselves from the castle, then see about doing our royal duties...
