Honestly, what impresses me most about this chapter is how fast it makes you want Soya dead in a ditch. Yes Kyora's objectively a horrible person, but we all know that Chihiro and co. are going to at least try and break into the human trafficking alternate dimension Storehouse/Vault (translation is inconsistent) to free all the prisoners. Soya? Soya's a fucking abuser and literally made Hakuri want to take his chances with a five-story fall over dealing with him. Screw Soya, nobody likes Soya. I apologize for making this comparison if you're not familiar with what I'm referencing, but he's like the White Hawk of Kagurabachi. But without any aura, just craziness.
And don't worry, Shiba will get his needed ass-kicking time (as in, time to kick ass) next chapter. That man does not know what's bad about spamming teleports, to him spamming is just optimal play.
Okay so, I mentioned earlier that Holazono grew Hakuri in a lab to sell doujins. Soya is another part of that. The incestuous subtext never becomes explicit, but it's very much there. Furthermore, while it's exaggerated, that sort of possessive, smothering affection that turns to violence at the drop of a hat is very much a pattern of behavior in real life abusers. While Kyora is a cartoon supervillain, Soya's cruelty is more realistic, which makes him way easier to hate.
The Shiba dripfeed continues. He's an interesting case of someone who is strong because he knows how to exploit the fuck out of his ability in all the most broken ways possible. I mean, think about it: his teleportation is instant, efficient, accurate, has a short cooldown and a massive range(enough to cross all of Tokyo, judging by his and Hinao's phone plan), bypasses barriers, can bring along people he's touching… it's fucking cracked. He's also just straight up strong in a head to head fight.
So now you may find yourself thinking 'wait, how strong is Shiba again? What's his upper limit?' Well, the manga plays its cards close to its chest there, but do remember: him letting Chihiro duel Sojo seemed to be for purely sentimental reasons, rather than lack of confidence on his part.
As Hinao comforts Hakuri, asking him if he can stand, Shiba begins his fight with Soya.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE - DEAL
Shiba hangs in the air, gravity beginning to make him fall. But before he hits the floor, Soya's already locked onto him.
"Isou". The same sorcery Hakuri tried before during the first time he met Chihiro. Soya puts his arms behind, and begins to focus spirit energy into his arms. A shock wave's pulse comes out, rocketing him forward— but Shiba dodges in midair, touching Soya with two fingers and teleporting both of them, making Soya rocket past Shiba upward instead of forward. And when I say rocket, I mean rocket. They're going at minimum as fast as Hiyuki was in her fight rn.
Shiba reads Soya's Isou shots, mentally considering the movements simple and telegraphed. But in exchange for those simple movements, Soya's reactions are fast. As Shiba attempts to teleport behind him, Soya immediately reaches a hand out to shoot out another Isou.
Which does a bit of damage, as you can see.
But you see that body in the lighter shirt, the higher one? That's Shiba. He dodged that. As both Shiba and Soya hang in the air, Shiba realizes that while Soya's probably the strongest Tou, Chihiro's still probably having trouble with the other 3+Kyora. He decides to teleport both Soya and himself back to the Sazanami Estate, to work together with Chihiro.
Anyways, speaking of Chihiro, Chihiro's getting jumped. He's got Nishiki activated, flying around the battlefield as all 3 other Tou surround him. Kyora's just sitting back and watching, as Chihiro's moving so fast that he breaks one of the Tou's swords.
But as that black-eyed Tou staggers back from his katana being broken, he turns to Kyora (who's still just standing there), and asks for "two blades". And as that Tou rushes back in, this happens:
Chihiro blinks in surprise. According to him, this isn't the first bullshit weapon that the Tou have pulled out of nowhere. He still doesn't know everything about the Storehouse.
As Chihiro and the Tou fight for their lives, Kyora Sazanami calmly sits down on a bench nearby. He's pondering why only Shiba ran away, while leaving Chihiro at the Estate. After all, if Shiba could teleport both him and Chihiro into the Estate, what's stopping Shiba from doing the dual teleport out?
Anyways, back to the fight. Chihiro continues using Nishiki, but once again it still has a weakness: if its momentum is stopped, then Chihiro's kinda cooked. Also hey what's Short Hair doing with that Isou?
Ah, shit. As Short Hair channels his Isou through his sword, another Tou with braids comes up from behind Chihiro, charging up his own Isou shock wave. If that connects, Chihiro's gonna be squished against Short Hair's Isou like a pancake.
But just as Braids fires off his attack, somebody interrupts!
It's Shiba, teleporting in Soya mid-attack! Soya's Isou counteracts Braids', causing them to ricochet off of each other and get Chihiro and Shiba both some space.
Also, check out this panel just afterward that looks cool. I just think it's neat!
As Chihiro and Shiba hit those poses like bosses, Soya and Braids both blink in confusion. Soya shouldn't be here— he was just searching for Hakuri after all.
From his bench, Kyora connects the dots. The phone call from before led Shiba away. The phone call led Shiba to find Soya. Soya was looking for Hakuri and Hakuri only. So therefore, the reason why Shiba was able to find Soya was probably…
Out of the same black bubbles that summoned the Tou's weapons comes Hakuri. On the other end of Tokyo, Hinao blinks in surprise as Hakuri just vanishes.
Shiba and Chihiro tense up from Hakuri's sudden appearance. The fight drags to a crawl, as all the Tou suddenly become silent. Kyora stands up and explains just what he did, while threatening Hakuri.
While most sorcerers would easily sense this happening, Hakuri was a baby and was never informed of this. He's essentially stuck underneath Kyora's thumb as long as he exists with that invisible registration on him. To Kyora, his own children are literally both weapons and property. Shit.
Kyora puts his foot down— literally, he steps on Hakuri's back, and asks Shiba if he wants their informant back. Shiba realizes that this is likely just a bluff, and that Kyora's just going to threaten Hakuri so he can get ahold of Enten.
So he responds to Kyora's bluff with one of his own, saying that they barely know Hakuri (not really, they already care about him too much) and that Kyora can do what he wants with his family members (not really, but he'll have to up the ante for an Enchanted Blade). Kyora looks at Shiba for a few seconds, and easily responds.
Kyora intensifies the pressure on Hakuri's back, and basically just verbally shrugs. While yes, Hakuri was born into the Sazanamis, he also couldn't use sorcery from birth, making him essentially trash. To Kyora, Hakuri's life has no value. Even if Kyora banished instead of killing Hakuri out of some sentimental value, he now has no qualms about killing off his hostage. Killing Hakuri now is as easy as taking out the garbage for Kyora.
But there's still another person that cares about Hakuri here. Chihiro puts a hand on his Enchanted Blade, cautiously assessing the situation.
But he doesn't draw it.
Instead, he considers what'll happen if Hakuri dies. Yes, the Enchanted Blades are valuable as all hell to him, Shiba, and his father… but to Chihiro, there's one thing at stake that's also quite valuable.
ARE THOSE PUPPY DOG EYES?!
Sorry, sorry, got taken aback there. Also, callback and reflection of Hakuri calling Chihiro his samurai, which gave Chihiro a different reason to fight! And yes, Chihiro's really considering trading away a weapon of mass destruction for somebody he's only known for a few days. I don't approve but… I see why ngl. Kyora squints a bit, and then we cut to another scene.
Hinao walks in on Char, Chihiro, Shiba, and Hakuri. They're all back. But one thing isn't.
Elsewhere, the Kamunabi head from earlier (the one with the big beard) receives some news.
The seventh blade of Kunishige Rokuhira, the Enten, is now up for auction at the Rakuzaichi. We see that it's stuck in a glass box inside the Storehouse, like some sort of museum piece. From the estate, Kyora ruminates, saying that bringing him the Enten has been the most useful thing that Hakuri's ever done. With two enchanted blades up for grabs, this next Rakuzaichi will be unparalleled.
Back at their Tokyo hotel, Hakuri tearfully apologizes for causing Chihiro to lose Enten. Shiba apologizes for brining Soya over. But Chihiro silences the conversation. It's him who's at fault for trying to solo the Tou to find out more about the Storehouse. And according to Chihiro, nobody needs to apologize.
As he reveals that his real plan was to give the Sazanamis the Enten.
Even far away and inside the Storehouse, the Enten still bubbles with power. It still only answers to one master, after all.
Chihiro: I know that the Enchanted Blade is valuable and that I need to take it. Kyora: I know that you know that, so I'm putting it in the Storehouse. Chihiro: I know that you put it there, so I'm going to fight you and your children to figure out the Storehouse's secrets. Kyora: I know that you tried to do that, so I'll keep summoning Hakuri and the Tou and use them as bargaining chips. Chihiro: I know that you're going to do that now, so in order to get rid of that consistent threat to my new best friend Hakuri I'll offer up my Enchanted Blade. However giving you Enten was my plan all along! This will be explained next chapter.
Anyways, we're now done with the first half of the Rakuzaichi, the Hiyuki intro/Estate assault. Now for the fun part— the gambit pileup.

Second off, I just wanted to say a few things for the people that are all caught up with the manga, since the new chapter just came out today. Don't read if you're experiencing Kagurabachi through this thread, tho tbf all these spoilers are out of context anyways and I can't tell you what to do. Just make sure to discuss any events past chapter 25 under spoiler warnings, alright?
Kermie's Summarized Thoughts on KB Ch 65:
I love Toto. I've known her for 4 chapters now and feel like I'll like her as much as Hiruhiko. She hits that same sweet spot as Kyora: affably and casually evil but still cool. Just replaced PROCEEDING with snark and vampiress thingies.
I wonder if we're going to see a flashback of Samura and later Uruha learning Iai: White Purity. It seems like something that should happen, especially with Chihiro's intent to learn that art in 24 HOURS.
I like Iori's dynamic with Chihiro. This is like, what, the third mirror of himself that Chihiro's met in the story? Hokazono doesn't stop with the hits.
The bloodlust hotel is clearly inspired by the Continental from John Wick. Hokazono wears his inspirations on his sleeve.
I'm glad that they didn't make the secret to Kunishige's blade forging some special sorcery or bloodline. Just skill and attention, both of which Chihiro naturally picked up from being around him from years. If this keeps up tho Chihiro's never beating the Kakashi allegations. (First Flame Bone, now this!)
God that fishbowl panel still hits me right in the gut.
Apologies; because of extenuating circumstances (family BS) I'm going to be taking a hiatus from doing this thread and lowering my activity on this site in general. You probably won't see me as much for two-three months. Sorry! I was meaning to give you guys a surprise update for my birthday yesterday but lots of things got in the way. I'll continue working on my personal stories in the background— a nice detective/urban fantasy mix, you won't wanna miss it.
As a last gift to you guys, remember to read Kagurabachi here if you wanna binge it and here for the weekly uploads. And also, check out what I got for my birthday.
