I fear the Scorpion will make for poor guards, especially in comparison to the Seppun who have guarded your family for centuries. Our techniques rely on secrecy and misdirection, the wards of the Yogo depend on a stationary location; unless you are willing to see me seal the Empress away in some hidden citadel and send a body-double in her place to official functions, the protection I can offer is strictly inferior to that which she already enjoys.
The dog which fails to bark at intruders makes for a poor guard, but so too would one's horse. If you would have me protect the Empress, then give me the name of those who might threaten her and I shall see them vanish in the night, but long-term protection of a living person is as far from my Clan's forte as can be imagined.

Long before, the Empress was protected from danger by the Seppun and those guards around her will stay. I would ask your Scorpion do what they do best, be hidden and seek out the threats that the Seppun are not trained to, ensuring that all threats to her are ended before they attempt to strike like they did once before.
I do not ask for you to replace fully the protection of the Imperial Guard but instead use the Scorpion's Sting to ensure that none may plot her demise or kidnap ever again.
Is that sort of covert work not your Clans forte that you might employ it slightly differently for me?

The Scorpion are basically offering to help feed the sixty thousand additional guests that the Emperor is bringing to (or at least near) Winter Court, no strings attached. I doubt even our trade surplus can provide quite that much food on short notice, but it should alleviate the burden somewhat.

I see. Thank you for trusting me with this information, my lord. Certainly I can see why you might be concerned at such talk, and while I cannot comment on the reliability of the source (not knowing the man in question), I can most assuredly share your frustration with the vague nature of the wording. If we are to assume that the terms refer to the symbols held dear by your own Clans, that narrows it down considerably, but even then... well, a horse and a lion both have manes, and wings are possessed by a great many creatures, cranes and phoenix among them.
I hesitate to offer any substantial guidance based on such flimsy grounds, my lord, but if you would accept your servant's initial impression, I would advise you to turn your gaze towards the Left Hand and the Children of the Wind. The Crane and the Unicorn are known to have recently signed a defensive pact, and I believe there was talk of an economic alliance as well. The only other combination that suggests itself freely to the mind is that of the Lion and Phoenix, but aside from a betrothal arranged twenty years ago or more I can think of few points of connection to be made there; Akodo Toturi was not even the Lion Champion at that point, nor expected to ever become so.
I look forwards to this court, my lord; I am sure it will be most illuminating.

The highest-ranking diplomat is to bring two caligraphic copies of the original Sparrow, the Grashopper and the Locust to the court of the Doji as a present.
