King Arthur’s No Good, Going to be Bad Weekends

[X] "Do you believe in your righteousness today, Sir GALEHAULT? I shall ask no more question if you do."

I like this one.
We know SOMETHING is up.

[X] "No, I don't think so. Who were you hoping to murder in cold blood this night? Sir LANCELOT would be disappointed in your conduct."
On the other hand, if We MUST die three, or is it two? Days hence, then we have nothing to fear from antagonizing Galehault right here right now.

[x] "No, I don't think so. Who were you hoping to murder in cold blood this night? Sir LANCELOT would be disappointed in your conduct."

Day 1: Turning Point
[X] "No, I don't think so. Who were you hoping to murder in cold blood this night? Sir LANCELOT would be disappointed in your conduct."

The enormous warrior stands still in complete silence under the moonlight, his back turned from you.

A second passes.

The world stands still.

Two seconds pass.

Sweat is tracing a line on your throat.

Three seconds pass.

If a fight breaks out between the two of you, you are not confident you can hold off Sir GALEHAULT long enough for the other knights to check the commotion.

Four seconds pass.

"…HMPH. YOU ARE THE KING, AND A MURDER WITHIN YOUR DEMESNE IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. VERY WELL."

You listen closely.

"I SOUGHT TO KILL AGRAVAIN OF THE HARD HAND. YOUR OWN NEPHEW AND MY FELLOW KNIGHT OF THE ROUND TABLE."

You wait for a moment if he's going to expand upon it.

"…Well?"

"DON'T PLAY COY WITH ME SIR ARTHUR, WE BOTH KNOW WHAT HE WILL ATTEMPT TO DO. IT IS ONLY YOUR SILLY ATTEMPT OF THAT JUDICIAL SYSTEM THAT HAS ALLOWED THAT CRAVEN FIEND TO STILL WALK AMONG US WITH HIS HEAD ATTACHED."

That is true. Certainly, there are many instances where only Sir AGRAVAIN could have done the crime, and yet your nephew walks free now because there were no proof that he had done so.

Had you been more of a tyrant, you could have beheaded him, not even for the suspicion of being a murderer of many fine knights. Your nephew's presence is an ill omen to all knights.

But you are not a tyrant. You have a dream. Of peace, of equality, of prosperity. Of happiness for all people without any exceptions. Call it the naiveté of eternal youth, but you wish to believe in that dream.

"And would you stoop so low as to become a craven murderer like him then? Would you kill those who inconvenience you like Sir AGRAVAIN the Proud?"

"I SOUGHT TO KILL HIM FOR JUSTICE. FOR HIS UNANSWERED SINS. FOR ALL THE MURDERED IN THE FUTURE THAT HE WILL BE A PART OF. WE ARE KNIGHTS. WE KILL FOR OUR CAUSE, AS WE ALWAYS HAVE BEEN."

"Then as your liege, I order you this; sheathe your blade. Cool your temper and remember your oath. CAMELOT stands for chivalry - justice for every people be they friends or enemies."

Sir GALEHAULT turns to stare into your eyes.

"FEH! FINE! I'LL LEAVE THIS FOR NOW. WELL, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THIS MURDER ATTEMPTER, YOUR MAJESTY?"

That is a valid question. You have just witnessed an attempt at murder, and the culprit has just confessed. What will you do?

[] "To the dungeons with you. Reflect your actions down there for a week."

[] "Return to your chamber. You have yet to murder anyone and I shall have no unnecessary suffering."

[] "I shall not allow you to harm much less murder your fellow knight, but if you wish to, I will not stop you from attempting to have Sir AGRAVAIN confess to whatever sins you believe he might have done."

[] "…Tomorrow morning, before the quest departs. I shall permit you to challenge Sir AGRAVAIN to a public duel to confront him for his perceived actions. Not to the death! That part's important."

[x] "…Tomorrow morning, before the quest departs. I shall permit you to challenge Sir AGRAVAIN to a public duel to confront him for his perceived actions. Not to the death! That part's important."

...that, or try to get a confession out of him. We can even promise not to look too closely how that confession came to be.

Day 1: Everything is going swell today
[X] "…Tomorrow morning, before the quest departs. I shall permit you to challenge Sir AGRAVAIN to a public duel to determine his guilt. Not to the death. That part's important."

"TRULY? THIS IS THE VAUNTED WISDOM OF MYRDDIN'S WARD? WHAT MADE YOU THINK I WON'T SIMPLY KILL YOUR MAD NEPHEW?"

"Your oath, Sir GALEHAULT. I shall hold you to your oath. I shall assign your conscience to be your oath keeper if you think you are in need of one."

In response to that, he flashes a wry smirk as he sheathes his sword and turn back from where he was going.

"YOU JUST SAW ME GOING ON MY WAY TO MURDER SOMEONE, AND YOU SAY COW DUNG LIKE THAT? YOU ALRIGHT IN THE HEAD THERE, SIR ARTHUR?"

"Remind me, which one of us surrendered because he was amazed at a random knight's skill?

"OKAY, FIRST OF ALL, THAT 'RANDOM KNIGHT' AS YOU PUT IT, IS SIR LANCELOT. SECOND OF ALL, THAT IS A COMPLETELY VALID REASON TO SURRENDER. THIRD OF ALL, BEAUTY HAS BEEN…"

"Well, I was unaware you are this passionate about it."

"…FIFTH OF ALL, OUR CONTEMPORARY ZEITGEIST HAS PLACED LOVE TO BE THE HIGHEST IDEAL ONE CAN REACH FOR, AND IT IS NOT INCONCEIVABLE THAT…"

The two of you walk together, yourself half-heartedly listening to whatever the rambling half-giant is spewing out before the two of you separate on a hallway.

Before you go far, Sir GALEHAULT stops whatever rant he's whipped up and ask you something.

"ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THIS? HE IS STILL ONE OF YOUR NEPHEWS AND IS SOMEWHAT ADMIRED AMONGST THE PEOPLE. ARE YOU CERTAIN THAT THIS IS HOW YOU WANT TO LET THINGS BE?"

You stop for a moment to ponder the question.

"Yes. Whatever happens, we are knights, and the truth shall be revealed in combat, as that is our lot, to fight for our ideals, our own personal truths."

"…HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO GET ANY FOLLOWER WITH THAT NAIVE IDEALS OF YOURS? WE FIGHT AND WE KILL. THERE IS NOTHING IDEAL IN THE PROCESS OF COMBAT."

"I suppose, that is my ideal. To say to everything that they can be beautiful, regardless of what they are. That in everything there is good that is worth championing for. Is that so strange?"

"HMPH. I SUPPOSE IT JUST SOUNDS MAD TO ME, TO EVEN CALL SOMETHING LIKE THAT GOOD OR BEAUTIFUL. BOTH OF US HAVE OUR SHARE OF KILLS. YOUR KNIGHTS HAVE THEIR SHARE OF KILLS. AND YET YOU WOULD STILL CALL ALL OF US GOOD?"

"Good is what we strive to be. I believe in you, and I believe in Sir AGRAVAIN. Good night, Sir GALEHAULT, and have a restful sleep."

You turn and walk away even as you hear the knight returning your goodbye.

You enter your chambers into an empty bed. It appears that your spouse is currently somewhere else, busy with her handmaidens, as she often is.

As usual, you decide to tuck in early when you have no other pressing matters. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day, and you're going to need all the sleep you can get.

Your mind drifts to consciousness, and the day ends.

Day 1 ends

This is simply because I'm contractually obligated to vote for Merlin wherever he appears, I'm absolutely fine with any other outcome.
