Killing with Silence (L5R/Exalted)

[X] The Speaker

Liminal occultist-figures and wandering mystics are fun, all the more so when we have to go cloaked in lies and misdirection to not get fucking murdered. Also, more opportunity to interact with the Dead side of life.

[X] The Speaker

While going full-smashy has its own appeal, I like to see a story that features an active, operational afterlife and one that interacts with the living in interesting fashion.

Shapeshifter Robin Hood Constantine? Sounds fun to me.

There is probably some sort of folklore hero like this, but I cannot quite recall one at the moment. Maybe similar to one of Odin's faces, mysterious sage stranger or whatever.
Actually, shapeshifter exorcist Gandalf might be more appropriate description.

I'm torn between the Ronin and the Speaker. On the one hand, the Kurosawa-esque feel of L5R is one of the things I love about it and while ronin have never been mechanically represented well until 5th edition, the story of the wandering ronin who walks into town and upends the established order by helping knock down a corrupt official fits this feeling completely.

On the other hand, the Speaker gives all sorts of possibilities to deal with ancestors upset at their descendants, hungry ghosts warped by their own actions in life, animals spirits enraged at humans showing disrespect to their lands, and even the demons of Jigoku. In many ways the Speaker is in just as good a position to upend Rokugani society in such a way as to protect those within it who are decent to other people and punish those who are not.

So, with that in mind, I think I'm going to go with...

[X] The Speaker

Because I think it opens up a lot of fun ghost stories, though it was a hard choice for me because I love Ronin. EarthScorpion's reasoning has convinced me, however, and I think it would be neat to explore a Shugenja who has avoided being snatched up by one of the Clans. Much like with Ronin it makes people suspicious, and also like Ronin I think there's enough connection to Rokugani society with the Speaker that the character will become an agent of change wherever they go.

Which is, ultimately, what I'm looking for.

[X] The Ronin

The idea of being this nigh unstoppable juggernaut of a shapeshifter really appeals to me. Plus iaijutsu with supernatural physical abilities would be devastating.

yes and? being a face eating murderous monster doesn't mean killing the opposition is always a great option when your power comes from people letting down their barriers around you.
Our power also comes from eating people and becoming them. Who needs to influence some samurai when you can be the samurai you just ate?

Technically there are ways to get a shape without having to murder someone and eat their heart.

...not that Onnotangu would actually explain that, granted. Real fan of the classics is Lord Moon.

well, if YOU want to try taking over the life of someone you know literally nothing about... ... ... I suppose that's technically an option that you COULD try...

Oh wait, GHOSTS are a thing... hmmmmm.

Unless stealing someone's form also prevents a ghost from happening I'm pretty sure any attempt like that would get caught reasonably soon.

Admittedly, I'm working entirely off "what's in the OP" given that my understanding of Legends of the Five Rings amounts to a handful of short and dead quests/FF that were crossing over with something I knew a bit more about or were from someone, that like Maugan Ra, I see their name attached and go "Imma read this".
