I was honestly mostly joking. It's an amusing thought, but the only way that Karin could learn any sort of real tactics that's applicable to her new role is if like... Urahara was the one gming a game that's specifically designed to emulate soul reaper abilities.

I've got an inordinate number of military in my former RPG groups (and we mostly played shadowrun) and they pretty much laughed at me when I asked shadowrun stuff was actually applicable to real life. Basically, stuff you learn in real life might help you come up with some interesting ideas in game, but it very rarely goes the other direction.
Real life doesn't have superpowers or literal monsters or spellcasting. The kind of tactics used to combat conventional military threats with armies of similarly capable soldiers and mechanical vehicles and missles, and the tactics needed to combat lone individual entities with superpowers (and some low-level mooks that pale in offensive and defensive comparison to you OR the primary threat opponent), are going to be very different.

STOP GIVING ME OMAKE PLOT BUNNIES

Omake = xp. So.... no. Have all the bunnies

I mean, basically my point was that even in systems with sort of mimic real life - shadowrun if you rip the magic out or are playing a mundane firefight is about as decent an approximation as I've found - you don't really get any real 'practice' from playing the game that you can carry into real life.

It follows then it's even harder get any skill out of a fantasy game and then apply to Shinigami tactics. To do so, you would require a game designed specifically to emulate Shinigami abilities - because frankly your run of the mill D&D or warhammer or whatnot is way too far off both ability and mechanics wise to help. And on top of that, you'd need an experienced shinigami to be running the game to correctly simulate how a real supernatural enemy would react in a given situation. A bunch of mundane teenagers running a fantasy campaign is.... none of those things.

Isshin has been hosting game night for the past few years Ichigo invited his friends once but dropped after the first session.

That would actually be pretty hilarious.

Honestly, the thought of any number of Shinigami playing a RPG is pretty funny.

Zaraki: I charge the Tarrasque.
Kyoraku - *pretends to be drinking throughout the game - is secretly taking notes in his head*
Aizen: Oh look, I got another natural twenty. *mutters something about keikaku under his breath*
Unohana - is playing a fighter/cleric multiclass. Nobody ever figures out she has fighter levels because she never fights.
Rangiku: Tries to get away with fudging rolls while distracting DM with boobs.

Random note: Wow there's a lot of Karin as a soul reaper fan-art out tehre.

Wow. Okay, so, first of all this is really nice. Second of all, this is eerily close to the outline I had in my notes of a flashback that would have happened if you guys had chosen to focus on something different for Urahara. It's pretty short, but take 50 XP for the sheer quality of the writing here.

So close, so very close, it could've happened...

I was there too. My goal was to get Karin Legendary Soccer Skills, then Storm shot me down when I suggested it. :(

RIP our young dreams:cry:. Tiny soccer ninja route is probably closed... ah well. Tiny Tactical Mahou Shoujo can still be very cool even if I'd have rather seen that go to Yuzu while Karin is chibi Soifon.

On the Urahara/Isshin DMs angle , there is at least one D20 Modern conversion out there for ideas . Unfortunately its forum is a wretched hive of cheese and munchkinry and only the first book actually covers character-types seen in Canon (the rest is homebrew other-spirit-types).

Man wouldn't that be a weird campaign if they traded off the DM role? One is probably a Killer DM who's detailed setting and plots require a corkboard with red string, and the other is likely Leeroy Jenkins The Dungeon where everyone is Mythic Gestalt Epic.

And of course for humor it isn't the one you'd expect.

Random note:

Now I'm Imagining Isshin crying to Masaki because Ichigo decided to play a Bard the first game and that's why Ichigo refuses to play now.

Darn - missed the vote.

Considering I was looking forward to 'rank-and-file Shinigami' in 'We Stand In Awe' before Omake's happened, I'm looking forward to more of this.

Note... join Rukia's squad if we get to be an actual soul reaper.

DON'T Hang out with Makoto. :p
