[] Plan Rest and Rider Training
-[][Morning] Sleep in
-[][Day] Dexterity Class
-[][Afternoon] Go talk with John
There's no real alternative. Yesterday was exhausting, and you just know that it's going to be a long day today. You're sleeping in, as long as you possibly can.
When your alarm finally rings, you rise up and wipe the sleep from your eyes with a yawn. You're a little stiff, but the stretching class today should get that sorted out with some ease. And to be perfectly honest, with all of the sudden exercise that you've been getting you're glad that it's only some stiffness in your limbs.
The class is taking place in an open lecture room in the library, so it's close enough that you have time to make a quick breakfast and leisurely walk there.
The room is big, as expected, and any tables and chairs that might normally take up space have been removed, with mats laid out on the ground.
Looking around, there's about 20 of you there, and most of them are in the twenties to thirties age range.
Training Roll: 2d30 = 17, 26. 26 Dex EXP gained!
The class starts off slowly, with the basic stretches. Hip rotations, splits, touching your toes, etc. Then the teacher begins moving you all towards dynamic stretches. As the class progresses, you find yourself limbering up, the stiffness fleeing from your muscles.
In all honesty it's not as strenuous as you thought, and yet by the time the class is winding down you've noticed a very clear improvement in how far you can wring your body.
When you walk back to your place after the class, it's with a spring in your step and a tune whistling through the air.
The cool down shower easily wipes off all the sweat from your body, and you feel rejuvenated. Which is good, because now you have to track down John. One of the many night shift cops all over the town.
Yeah. Fun times.
So now you have to ask yourself a question. If you were a night shift cop, where would you be? The answer to that is simple. Wherever your patrol route is. And just like that, you find yourself right where you began.
Clearly, then, you really don't have an option here. It's time to go out and do what hopefully is not becoming a habit-- walking around town after the sun's set.
You get the faint feeling that you may not be so willing to do this if you didn't have a belt that gives you literal superpowers, but you quickly shrug it off. If you didn't have the belt, you wouldn't need to be walking around at night either.
So you find yourself locking the doors to your house and shrugging on a cardigan to fight off the light fall chill that's been settling into town recently. The walk into downtown proper isn't long, but even though you set off just as the sun had set it's pitch black by the time you arrive.
Spaced evenly along the curb streetlights send out circles of pale light, but you find yourself not impressed by their effectiveness. You could probably see better if they weren't there at all and you let your eyes adjust. Now you have to strain your ears to get a better grasp of your surroundings, jumping at every little sound.
No matter how large of a town Allerswell is, nobody was fooled into thinking that it was like a city. This late at night, families were arriving home from dinner or work, cars parking and streets emptying.
You are the only person on the sidewalk, and the only thing that your ears can pick up is the brief scuttling of the wind blowing some trash along.
Suddenly something covers your mouth, and you scream as a roar washes across your ears, completely dominating your hearing. It lasts for a pregnant moment, in which one hand slaps ineffectively against the person holding you while the other gropes at your side for your driver.
Then the arm drops and the roar is replaced by laughter.
Your now free arm drops to grab at your heart, and you waste no time in stomping over to the source of laughter and slapping it.
"Gah! Okay, okay, sorry about that. Didn't think you'd scare so easily." The voice reveals the person to be John.
You click your tongue, feeling a frown form on your face. "'Didn't think I'd scare so easily'? More like didn't think at all! What was I supposed to think when some random guy just covers my mouth and shouts right into my ear! Aren't you supposed to be a cop?"
John's silhouette twitches in a way that you hope is a wince, recoiling at your spite. "Er- yeah, sorry. I just thought, ya know since you were doing so well earlier with the, uh, Inkling, that you'd… You know, I'm just- I'm just gonna stop talking now."
Part of you preens a little bit at his reasoning, but as a whole it's overwhelmed by your pure and unadulterated rage.
Judging by the way John is taking several steps back, you think that he might understand his current position.
He clears his throat and speaks up. "Sorry, I am really, really sorry about that. But you wanted to find me for a reason right?"
His words are like a knife cutting through your rage. You swallow thickly and nod. "Yes, of course. I want to compare notes on the situation. So far all I know about these Inklings are that they disperse into that ink when defeated, and that we can either dissipate that if our genres aren't compatible, or we can turn them into power ups if they are." You pull out your own trope cartridge and wiggle it at him.
He nods. Slowly. Hesitantly. Then he opens his mouth. You're not going to like this. "The thing is, although this was only my second Inkling fight, the last time I defeated one there was a guy in that puddle of ink. Like it was some sort of-- I don't know, a shell around him."
You freeze. "You're saying Inklings are people."
"More than just that," He pauses. "When I asked the guy some questions later on, he had no idea what had happened. No, that's not very accurate. He um… the last thing he remembered was having a mental breakdown, centered around a very personal issue, and then he just whited out."
"So… what happened to the guy in the Inkling we just defeated?" He shrugs. "Maybe we should ask that Felicity girl. She may be a little hard to handle, but she clearly knew how to turn the Ink into a Cartridge, so…"
A sour look comes over your face at the memory of her. Still, you haven't actually met her yet. You won't let yourself make any judgements before then. You especially would know better than to do that.
"I see. Well, I guess I'll try and get on that. Seems like it'd be harder for you to do considering you're nocturnal."
John laughs and pulls out a pad of sticky notes, jotting something down on the top sheet before ripping it off and handing it to you. "My phone number. Let me know if you get more info, or need to meet up. I have to go now though, I'm on the clock right now."
