[X] The Knight: Stalwart and firm, take the fight to your enemies while wielding offense and defence directly. - 23
[X] The Shadow: Silent and deadly, destroy your enemies without being seen and leave before they ever knew you were there. - 13

Winning vote is: [X] The Knight: Stalwart and firm, take the fight to your enemies while wielding offense and defence directly.
"Intrud-!" A fist connected with his jaw before he could finish.
Grabbing a hold of the now unconscious guard before he could fall, you held him in front of you and ran towards the remaining guard, using the other as a shield to block the barrage from the shiny laser pistol. Your armour was designed to walk off attacks a lot stronger than this, but better safe than sorry.
Concentrated beams of energy blew through the guard's chest as you moved closer. As soon as you heard the click, you let go and rushed the remaining distance. You didn't want to give him time to reload, or was it recharge? You'd have to give the gun a look over after. Blue shimmered into existence along your arm, but it didn't stick around for long. Prongs grew along your gauntlet, channelling a stream of power into a new shape. Fragile blue solidified into an orange bulwark. You swung your arm and the guard slammed into the wall with a sickening crack. He collapsed like the first, seemingly unconscious. You kicked him and he smashed into the other wall to make sure.
He didn't stir, so he was either unconscious or really committed to be the bit.
Hard light flattened and reshaped into an overlayed gauntlet. You swallowed and the knuckles grew spikes. If you left him behind there was a chance he would wake up and sound the alarm. This was the second group you had to go through because you couldn't go around, if he woke up there could be a hundred more. Those were odds you weren't comfortable betting against.
For Maya you couldn't take the risk.
**
You made sure to grab their phones and exotic weapons before moving on.
Tapping into the second guards' phone, you sighed in relief at the screen full of failed to send text messages. With your old range back, you could block the signals anyone tried to send out in the same corridor, but it didn't hurt to double check. You had been blindsided enough these past few days – you weren't going to get complacent now.
You threw the phone and the ground and stomped. No point in holding onto it now.
But as it was, your range wasn't enough to cover more than your immediate surroundings. When you were piggybacking off the network it was a lot better, but that still wasn't enough to cover the entire compound. Plus, it took a lot of concentration to make the connection, not something you could maintain while dodging lasers.
But it wasn't like your range was bad, you could cover a decent distance, that you couldn't cover the entire area said more about the size of this place then anything about your limits. If you had to guess, you'd say base ran through the entire mountain. And if you didn't want to be up to your eyeballs in very well armed security, then you needed to stay under the radar, for as long as you could.
Though you couldn't kid yourself, with this configuration you were a walking tank. There was nothing stealthy about you. Eventually someone would get away, or a random patrol would find one of the checkpoints you'd broken through and then the entire base would be on alert.
You needed to find Maya. Quickly.
Opening another door, you found yourself in a break room that wouldn't look out of place in some Eastern palace. The funny thing was the room you just left behind would've fit perfectly somewhere in Tony's tower. You thought melomaniac's liked having a consistent theme. One of their only good points really. Though if you were going to be spending all your time in an underground complex, if you ended up staring at the same walls everyday, you'd go insane. You know, once you got past the cool factor of living in a secret base.
Okay, enough admiring the jade statues. You put your hand on the wall and tapped into the network.
Hundreds of devices pinged across your consciousness. You ignored the one's you'd already gone through. Just because you could sense every device didn't mean you had the time to pick through each one.
Glimpses of rooms and bodies flashed across your vision. Most of the new signals were from random devices on guards out on patrol. Phones, headsets and whatever advanced weaponry they were packing. Not everyone was armed, but enough were that you really didn't want to set off the entire base.
But speaking of those weapons, they were different. Alien, like Jackson's ring, though to a far lesser extent. You could influence them for starters, though it was like pushing through fog. Maybe you could cut that down but it wasn't something you had time to experiment with. But with the sheer number of weapons, you could sense… if there wasn't a lab or recovered spaceship somewhere in this mountain then you'd eat your foot. But as nice as it was to know exactly how outgunned you were if you ever took a wrong turn, that wasn't what you were looking for.
Another room jumped by. A massive chamber, shrouded in shadow, but you could still make out a symbol of ten interlocking rings with swords crossed over. It sat at the centre of the mountain.
Ah cool, the boss room. You made a mental note of the location. You'd give it a wide berth for now, but when Maya was safe… Thoughts for later. More glimpses passed by.
Empty room. Armoury. Ro- oh, there was the lab. You made another mental note. First get Maya out then maybe you would come back to take everything not nailed down. Another room full of heavily armoured vehicles, great, maybe you'll be dealing with tanks soon too, the halls were big enough for them. Another empty room and then another lab, this one with a familiar brown-haired silhouette typing while someone pointed a gun at the back of her head.
Maya.
Finally.
She was okay. Well, not okay, but not dead. So, progress.
She wasn't close, around the edge of your boosted range. There were a couple of patrols you were going to have to break through if you didn't want to retrace your steps for an hour. Your shield reverted to its lower configuration and a second joined the first. Bumps pushed out from your shoulders. This should be enough. At least it would have to be. You had a feeling that if you tried pushing further without a power source to share the load with you were going to overload. And you never wanted to go through that again, it hurt enough the first time. So, while these nanites were a lot more forgiving than your old limits, you hadn't broken them entirely.
But that was an experiment for later. Time to see how well your new durability held up.
Some of them had cannons.
This was going to be so much fun.
**
One of the benefits of nanites is that they were self-cleaning. You didn't need to go through a suit sized carwash (thank you, Tony). Just inject a little bit of power and they buzz all the dirt and grime right off.
Why were you thinking about this? No reason. Though on a separate note, if you're going to keep going through secret bases maybe you should invest in some red paint.
Coming to a stop at the door outside the lab, you tapped into the network. This close you didn't need to touch the wall to see through the cameras. A view of the inside overlayed in your mind. Ohh, trippy. Maya was still inside, a gun still pointed at her head.
You unclipped the alien pistol from your belt. Now, how to do this without risking Maya? He might have orders to shoot if anyone opened that door.
But all that meant was you had to deal with him without opening the door.
You lifted your hand up and did some power assisted math. No, not quite right. Just a bit more, you adjusted a bit to the right, directly in line with the side of the guard's head. There we go. Now, if you overcharged the shit out of it…
The barrel glowed an angry red as you poured power into it. There was a good chance that this would ruin the pistol, but it wasn't like you were getting much from it anyway. If you wanted to really get a grip on this tech then you needed something a lot more complex than this. But at least this way you would get some use out of it.
The guns frame shuddered as the power built reached a crescendo. You pulled the trigger and barrel cracked, though not before a beam blazed through the door and then the guards head like a ripe tomato.
"What the fuck?" Maya jumped back, red now dusting her face. "Oh my god! What the fuck? Shit!"
Then again, maybe going all in without warning would be a tad distressing. What you were going to do next probably wouldn't help either. Locked door of course, and not automatic. The key was most likely in the pocket of the guard you'd just taken out.
Metal groaned and then shrieked as you tore the door away.
A shot rang out above you and a shield sprung into existence.
Smoke drifted off the end of the pistol in Maya's hand. In the time it had taken you to pull the door apart she had gotten herself together and rifled through the guard's pockets for everything of worth. "Who are you?"
You put your hands up. "Don't shoot Maya." The mask sunk underneath your skin, revealing your unburnt and not at all sweaty face.
"Traveller?" she whispered. "You're alive?" She put the gun down and laughed. And then laughed some more.
"Not yet. Though not for a lack of trying." You weren't keeping score but there had to be at least fifty different people that had tried to kill you over the past two days. Definitely a personal best. Assuming you only counted the Chitauri as one. "Sorry it took so long, but it's about time I- oof." A blur crashed into you before you could finish.
"I thought they killed you." Maya said, her arms wrapped around you. "He said that you're alive but I saw you. You were going critical." She let go and cradled your face with both hands, checking for imperfections. Huh, so that's the look you got when you saw a piece of new tech for the first time. That didn't say good things about the condition of your insides when this was over. "Your eyes…"
"I got better."
Maya snorted and pursed her lips. "How are you still alive? And where did you get this?" Her hand brushed against your armour, it folded away and reformed. "The nanites." She breathed. "You hacked them. And you… you don't have Extremis anymore."
She got all that from a brush of her hand?
"What did you do?" To Killian's serum. To his legacy.
"I improved it."
"The serum." Maya laughed. You both ignored the slightly hysterical edge it carried. "Once wasn't enough?"
"That one was for you. This one was for me." You tapped your chest and your armour shifted into your old suit. These nanites were amazing, they remembered everything about your old suit, down to the last tiny detail. "I didn't want to spend another minute as another one of Killian's projects. So, I made it into something mine."
"You're just like Stark. Always pushing forward."
You doubted that, at least in the way she was thinking. But saying that would start a discussion neither of you had time for. "Could you stop touching my face please?"
She pulled her hands back. "Ah, sorry."
"Its fine." You gave her a once over, they'd swapped her clothes out for a white prisoner outfit but she seemed fine. "How's your head?"
Maya rubbed the fresh bandage around her forehead. "It's okay. I'm still a little woozy but they had doctor checked me over. A little bed rest and I'll be fine."
You let out a breath. "Good. We should get going then-" Several presences entered your range. "Shit."
"What?"
"We've got incoming." Your armour shifted back. You focused and started to get details. The camera in the same hallway they were on also helped. "Three. Heavily armed. Probably a routine patrol." At least you hoped so. There hadn't been any noise about what you'd done to get this far. At least as far as you knew. "They'll be here in a couple of minutes."
"How could you know that?"
"Look, we don't have time to play twenty questions." You gestured to the room. "Just find some cover an I promise I'll fill you in later."
Maya nodded and took your advice, taking cover behind the computer desk. Poking her head out, she asked, "what should we do?"
"Good question." You could take them on and if it was just you then you would've, but you couldn't guard Maya and take them down at the same time. There's too big a chance one of them would get away. "We hide. Hopefully they'll walk on by." You'd already cleared a path, adding three more would just complicate things.
"I think they're going to notice the missing door."
Shit. She was right. You picked up the door – thankfully it was still mostly in one piece – and set it back on its frame. From this angle you could see the scratches, dents and a couple of holes that made up a significant chunk of its surface.
Okay, this needed some fine tuning.
Pressing your hands against the frame, a group of nanites spread from your hands. Under your direction, they smoothed over and sunk unto the metal, wiping away all the surface dents and imperfections.
It wouldn't hold up to scrutiny. You'd done the superpowered equivalent of masking tape and paint. But hopefully they wouldn't be paying much attention to a random door.
Though you were getting sick of how much you'd come to rely on human error for your plans to work recently. You should read a book on strategy sometime. Hell, SHIELD training was still on the table, if you couldn't trust Natasha – the one who offered it to you in the first place – who could you trust? The rest of SHIELD was a different story.
Pressing your ear to the door, you looked back and Maya and put a finger to your lips, and waited.
A couple of minutes later, you sighed in relief after the patrol passed by. You thought you were screwed there for a minute when they stopped. You were about five seconds away from redeploying your helmet and adding another three to your total, but it seemed your work on the door was just good enough to pass inspection.
You gave it another minute to be safe before you turned back to Maya. "Okay, we're good for now and I've already cleared a path, so as long as we're quick we should be fine." You glanced at the gun she still had clenched in a white-knuckled grip. "You know how to use that?"
"Not really." Maya admitted. "But I'm not walking out there without some way to protect myself."
A fair point. Though based on the way she was holding that laser, replacing 'protect myself' with 'shooting Jackson' would be more accurate. "Alright, I'm not going to stop you, just stay close and try not to shoot me."
**
A silver gap opened on a rocky outcrop and two figures slipped inside.
"There's a medical bed if you need it." You said, heading deeper into the aircraft. "Otherwise strap in, there's an autopilot that will take you somewhere safe."
"You're leaving?"
"Not for long." Configurations shifted under your suit. Jackson gave you plenty of trouble before, but you didn't have Extremises vulnerabilities anymore. His boss couldn't be that much stronger. "Jackson, his master – they came for me. They hurt you because of me. They're here right now. I can take them down now. But if I leave, I may never get a chance like this again. I can't have that hanging over me." You smiled. "Thank you for saving my life." Getting her out wasn't enough. But maybe removing her kidnappers from the equation would even the score.
You slipped past her and she grabbed your arm, stopping you in place.
You smiled. "It'll be alright, Maya." You tugged your arm.
Maya gripped you tighter. There was something in her eyes. "Don't."
"What?"
"Don't go back there."
That look in her eyes, it wasn't concern. It was fear. "You don't think I can win?" You had faced champions, destroyed armies, and Maya thought that some warlord hiding in a cave was a match for you?
"He knows things Traveller." Maya said urgently. "He knew you were coming even when I thought you were dead. He's been waiting for you. You don't get it. You haven't met him. The technology he has… its beyond anything I've ever seen before. Even from you." She wrapped her arms around herself. "And his presence, it was like staring into the face of god. I told him everything I knew, he asked and I couldn't stop myself." She shook her head. "Please, don't go back in there. If you fight him, you'll die."
You looked away. Damnit. Maya may be running off an incomplete picture, but she had a better idea of what you could do than most. And if was so certain going head-to-head with Jackson's master would end with you losing… "Fine, I'll avoid him." But you couldn't just leave now. Who knew if this base would still be here after? There was a gold mine of knowledge, technology and even good old-fashioned revenge waiting for you if you decided to go back.
Maya was safe, and maybe you could get more out of this if you played your cards right.
Though the path you had taken to get you here… you weren't going to have long before the base on alert. If you were caught in there, then a fight with Jackson's boss was inevitable.
And there was still an egomaniac with an army about to execute his master plan, you couldn't forget about that. You thought that you wouldn't have time to affect the outcome of Killian's plan, but you had made really good time getting here and getting Maya out.
If you leave now then you would get back in time. But only if you left now.
Maya let go of your arm and looked at you expectantly. So many options lied in front of you, each more tempting then the last.
So then, what do you do (choose 1)?
[] Leave and help Tony fight Killian: You've rescued Maya. Mission accomplished. You don't give a shit that some warlord is coming after you in the future. Aldrich Killian's plans are coming to a head today. If you want to have any impact on how that ends then you need to leave now. [Note if you don't choose this option then you lose any ability to affect the outcome of Aldrich Killian's war.]
[] Go after Jackson: He's meditating in a grove, ice still burrowed into his skin. He's weak, and isolated. Make him pay.
[] Head for the Lab: This base has its own private lab. The teleportation tech had to come from somewhere. If there's a working sample of that anywhere, it would be there. Go back and take everything not nailed down.
[] Raid the Mandarin's Library: The Mandarin knows things. About your powers, about you. Jackson called you the Shaper, and you can't deny that name has meant something since you took that serum. You don't know what, but the Mandarin clearly does. Go find out.
Damn this took way longer than I hoped but some rl changes have drastically affected my schedule and consequently the amount of time I have to write, so I'll be making some changes to how I post.
I normally posted first thing in the morning (in my time zone anyway) but that isn't possible for me anymore, not if I want to have time to give a chapter an edit before posting. So, chapters are likely from now on going to be posted 12 hours or so later then they normally are.
There's some other stuff that I may have to change around but I'll leave that alone until the arc is finished.
Speaking of this arc, you're in the final stages now. This choice determines how the remaining chapters of the arc are going to go, so think hard, if you got any questions feel free to ask.

Keep in mind people that Killian has at 5x as many Extremis users as he did in Canon. Even with the Iron legion, that is a lot for Tony to handle. We should go back and help him, the Mandarin can wait for another day.

The winning vote is Leaving and fighting another day, so the Mandarin plotline is over... for now.
Time to focus on what comes next.
Tony will be grateful for the help, he is going to need it.
The base was so close. Power, knowledge, purpose, it was all there, waiting for you. All you had to do was walk down that ramp.
And walk straight to your death. If Maya was right.
The technology he has… it's beyond anything I've ever seen before. Even from you.
What did she mean by that? If there was something as powerful as she claimed inside that base you would've sensed it, surely. It was in your power description, for crying out loud. Unless…
You remembered a ring. Its hidden presence, and the power, the intelligence it contained when Jackson let it loose.
"Maya…" You hesitated. You didn't want to bring this up again - you didn't want to even consider this - but you had to know. "How many rings did he have?"
Her face blanked. "Nine."
And Jackson's ring made ten. No. It was his all along. You should've known really. It wasn't like they were hiding it.
The Ten Rings.
One you could beat. Two you could match if you stopped caring about the little things like collateral damage and war crimes. Ten? Not a chance in hell, especially if their calibre was anything like the first.
So much waited for you back in that base. In three days, you had gotten so much stronger. What lied in that base could make you stronger still.
But it was only things. They'll keep. You had done enough. You had already done what mattered.
You'll be back someday, and next time you'll be ready.
The Mandarin knows about you, but now you know about him. He would come to regret that.
The ramp raised. "Strap yourself in Maya, we're getting out of here."
You'll be back someday Mandarin.
And the world will know what a coward you are.
At the same time, in the heart of a mountain, a man sitting comfortably back on a throne of metal and bone opened his eyes.
"So, he's chosen to leave…" Nine rings glittered, one stronger than the others until it slowly dimmed to match the rest. "Very well Shaper, our conflict shall not occur this day." He chuckled and the earth rumbled. "Take joy in the time you have left Destroyer. Some day soon, I will come for you again." The warning played in his head again, as it always did when he had time to reflect.
It always started with a green world, so much like this one. Populated by being's worthy of standing beside the humanity he would create. And now gone. Broken down and rebuilt for a twisted and broken purpose by the three playthings of a dead god.
But even dead gods dream.
HE stood from his throne and the world rejoiced.
"And on that day the world shall reject you."
**
An invisible ship touched down on the front porch of a Malibu point address. You had spent the entire journey towards the Mandarin's cave unconscious, so you didn't really get to appreciate just how fast your new ship was until now.
"You alright over there Maya?" You asked the rather green looking scientist. Fun fact, with your direct control of the ship you could minutely adjust the flight path to reduce turbulence (not that you needed it, you were long since used to it), though that probably didn't help much when you were going so fast that the scenery out the window was nothing but a rapidly changing blur. Not that your ship had windows, you weren't going to leave such an obvious structural weakness in no matter how cool it looked.
"I'm okay," she swallowed. "How close are we now?"
"We're here actually. Let's go."
"Oh that's good, lets." Maya lifted herself up and almost fell back into the chair. "Urggggh… maybe not."
You grabbed her arm and wrapped it over your shoulder. Maya, please don't puke in your new shiny ship. "You alright?" She'd survived several egomaniacs over the past few days, you'd hate for travel sickness to do her in.
"I'm okay, she repeated. "Maybe I should have stayed in that medical bed after all."
"Well, hindsight and all that. But just grin and bear it a bit longer, soon you'll have a real doctor to check you over." Or at least JARVIS, which was likely better.
The ramp lowered to the evening sun. After skipping between who knows how many time zones you had lost track of how long you'd been awake (that time trapped in a cocoon, didn't really count as restful). Extremis was a hell of sugar high but you were going to crash at some point. Maybe you'd have enough time to sneak in a nap before the rendezvous.
"Unidentified vessel," a synthetic voice blared across the courtyard. Maya shrieked and ducked behind you as several armoured robots dropped from the air and rose out from the ground. "Please stand down before we must engage in regretful hostilities."
Maya poked her head out. "For god sakes Traveller, where the hell did you take us now?"
"Tony Stark's house. And you should be safe here." Or not apparently. You put your hands up and your suit sunk underneath your skin. "Cool it JARVIS, we're friendly."
One of the robots stepped forward, close enough for you to tap into it but you held back. If there was anyone that could sense your powers in action it would be JARVIS.
Your heart pounded in your ears as the Iron Man suit (the Mark 28 you think?) held a facial scanner against your face while the rest pointed their palms at you. JARVIS wasn't screwing around. What the hell had happened here?
"Traveller…"
"It's cool." The scanner was running but the weapons weren't powering down. Maybe you shouldn't have recalled your armour? You resisted the urge to break out into action, starting with crushing the Iron Man suits face-plate. Why was this taking so long? Was JARVIS compromised? You didn't think it was possible but after the last few days you weren't going to rule anything out.
You were about two seconds from starting something before there was a comforting green light. "Facial profile recognised. Welcome back, Mr Dreyer."
You sighed in relief, but didn't relax until you saw the other suits lowering their hands. "Good to be back JARVIS, what's with the cold reception?"
"Wait, Dreyer?" Maya interjected. "Is that your name?"
You winced. Shit. Blowing your secret ID was another thing you didn't want to do today, but after everything that had happened, if anyone deserved to know… "Yes, it is. Jack Dreyer, nice to meet you."
Maya gave you a flat look. "Oh good, I was getting sick of calling you that ridiculous name."
"Hey!"
"You know," Maya gave you a once over. "You don't really look like a Jack."
"It's the hair." You ran a hand through your shorter locks, and by shorter you meant almost non-existent. One thing Extremis didn't regenerate was hair, who knew? "Trust me, pre-explosion it suited me perfectly, completed the look really."
"If I may cut in." Jarvis said over Maya's snort. "It is a pleasure to see you alive and well Mr Dreyer, but may you please continue this conversation inside so I may reactivate our defences?"
"I'll be out of your way in a minute JARVIS, but you mind explaining what the hell's going on here?" Seriously, now that you weren't occupied with the cannons aimed at your beautiful face you noticed the cracked pavements. There was also the faint but discernible smell of cooked flesh. And you really hated just how familiar you were becoming with that smell.
"Hostiles attempted to enter the property a few hours ago. They were… forcibly removed."
"Is Skye okay?" If after everyone you'd done to ensure she walked away from all this alive and well, and she died when you weren't even there, you'd-
"Skye is fine. We believe Miss Potts was the intended target."
Oh, thank god, Thor and every other pantheon out there. You let out a laugh and then startled when you played the sentence over in your head again. "You call her Skye?" JARVIS had never called anyone by their first name in the entire time you'd known him, not even Tony, unless you considered "sir" a first-name.
"She insisted quite… vigorously, Mr Dreyer." Wow, you didn't know JARVIS could sound sheepish until now.
You guffawed. "Yes, I suppose she would." After all, you knew her surname. "Is she okay?"
"She's currently asleep, I believe she called it a 'power blackout', would you like me to wake her?"
"No." Thanks to Tony you had a good idea of just how busy she'd been. "Just give her my best when she wakes up."
"You're not going to see your friend?" Maya asked from behind you.
You almost jumped out of your skin. Fuck, you put 'Skye' and 'In danger' together and all your awareness goes out right the window. "No. She needs the rest. And I need to get going anyway." Killian wasn't going to kill himself.
"So you're just going to leave?"
"You'll be safe here Maya." You hoped Maya would stick around but if she decided to leave and never come back you wouldn't blame her. She may not have realized it yet but you were partially responsible for getting her into this mess in the first place. "You saw it, JARVIS won't let anyone get close, right J?"
"Yes Miss Hansen. Mr Stark kindly put you on the friends and family plan before he left."
"See. And speaking of Tony, where is he now JARVIS?" You held up a hand. "Actually, don't tell me, just transfer it to my ship. You should be able to do that right about… now." You held up your hand and your ship connected to the house's network. You could try and memorize the very technical coordinates you were about to get but you didn't want to accidently input a wrong number somewhere and end up in the wrong state. Once was enough. You turned around.
And Maya blocked your path. "That's not what I'm talking about, Traveller-" She shook her head. "Or Jack – I don't know, whichever one you prefer – she's your friend, for gods' sake, you made Extremis for her! Doesn't she deserve to know you're okay? Or the other way around?"
"She knows that already." An image of a familiar lab flashed by. You saw Skye half-collapsed over a bench, Dum-E putting a blanket over her shoulders. You noticed her gaunt face and cracked lips. Your friend, reduced to this – because of you. "I know it too. And that's enough for now." She was safe. That's what mattered. That's all that mattered.
Maya opened her mouth, likely to tear you a new one, but you pushed past her before she could start. You had already had this conversation with Tony. Once was enough.
Her expressions slowly turned from annoyance into a weary resignation. "Good luck Traveller, you idiot."
You smiled back. "Thanks for everything Maya, look after Skye for me."
You left the ramp down long enough to see her nod before you let the ship rise. Frankly, you had serious doubts that she would stick around for much longer. Between Killian, the Mandarin and you, this was probably the worst week of her life. If you were her you would put as much distance between you and everything else as possible.
The console pinged as JARVIS passed the information on. Not only locations but you focused on that first. Not exactly close but with this ship you'd make good time. The rest of the information was just as interesting.
Almost every facility that JARVIS and Skye had found had been shut down. Either by Tony, Rhodey or even SHIELD picking up one here or there. Killian was down to his last main facility. And according to the data, the same place where he had shipped all his Extremis subjects. This was all going to come down to one final confrontation.
Good. Spreading this out would be way more harmful in the long term. If you were quick enough, maybe you could prevent Extremis from being released out into the wild. You'd already ensured your version would never see the light of day, but Maya's was almost as dangerous. Plus whatever modifications Killian's made since then.
No time to waste.
**
Kilometres away, there was a patch of red among the yellow dots of distant skylines. The gathering spot was far and too close to the action all at once. Good thing you packed heavy.
"Nice suit Jack," said a War Machine. The red, white and blue paint job had been mostly replaced with shiny new armour plates since you saw it last. "You trying to look like me?"
"What can I say Rhodey, it's a good look." You flexed your shoulders and your nanites shifted until two identical War Machines stood side to side. Cosmetic only unfortunately. If you wanted to do more than copy the paint job, you'd need a couple of uninterrupted hours and a lot of caffeinated liquid. Another shrug brought your armour back. "I wear it better though."
Rhodey snorted and gestured behind him. "Come on, looks like they've finished setting up."
"About time."
A moment later, three armoured suits, a tailored suit, and a lab coat settled around a table.
"Alright," Tony began, after you were all settled. "Now that the gang's all here, Secret Agent, give us the cliff notes."
Said agent adjusted his glasses. Mind and nondescript were not what you had in mind when picturing a high-ranking SHIELD agent, but Jasper Sitwell fit that to a 'T'. Though you suppose that was the point. There was a reason your armour was fully deployed, helmet and all. "Thank you, Mr Stark. We have groups of agents, waiting, here, here and here." Sitwell pointed to a bunch of points on the map spread across the wooden table. "On my signal, they will begin evacuation efforts. The army will set up a cordon soon afterwards."
You traced the projected safe zone. It was a lot smaller than you'd like. "We're not giving them much time, are we?"
"We don't have much choice." Tony answered. "Not if we want to do this before Killian has enough warning to pull off something even more deranged. Freaking maniac."
"Relax Traveller," Sitwell added. "These agents are professionals. They'll get everyone out."
You hoped so. And it wasn't like they were wrong unfortunately. You didn't want to see what a Killian with his back against the wall could do with a few hours warning.
"Even with the army's help that cordon is thin." Rhodey pointed out. "A concentrated push from a group of Extremis users will break right through it."
"Which is why we can't let a single one escape." Tony said. "I had JARVIS run some scans. There's around a hundred signatures that match Extremis heat profile down there. This is going to get messy if we don't contain it."
"No shit, we're in the middle of the city." There couldn't be a worse spot for Killian to make his final stand. Too close to bomb, too clustered to pick them off one at a time. "I hope those agents are equipped with rockets. Any Extremis user could shake off anything less. Trust me, I know."
The SHIELD agent winced. Guess that answered that question.
Good thing Tony had the Iron Legion ready to go. That would go a long way to evening the scales.
You also had a Hulk. Couldn't forget that.
Said Hulk rubbed at his temples. "Traveller please."
You shrugged. "Just making sure The Other Guy is prepared Doc." You gestured at the briefcase sitting at Banners feet. "You got something for us?" Perhaps the best piece of news that JARVIS passed on was Bruce's contribution to this. Besides big and green.
Bruce set the briefcase on the table. He opened it, revealing three blue vials. "Three Extremis neutralizers, ready to go." He explained as he passed them around.
"A cure?" Boy you wish you had this a day ago.
"No. Extremis fundamentally alters every cell in the body. You can't cure that with a simple injection, not if you want them to stay alive afterwards." Banner shook his head in amazement. "The sheer scale of Extremis changes… it's brilliant. The biochemistry behind this serum is amazing! I would love to meet its creator someday."
"Well, she's currently hunkered down at Tony's house" you assume praying for Killian to die screaming. "If this all goes well you can meet up with her for drinks after and compare notes. Though speaking of this thing…" You checked your wrist, shit, wrong time zone. Oh, who cares, the point was made. "Shall we get started?"
"Yes, we should. No point in dragging this out." Tony pointed at you. "I've got first crack at Killian. I'm the one he wants."
You held up your hands. "Sure, thing boss." You'll see about that.
Tony continued. "The Iron Legion will keep Killian's projects contained while we go after the man himself." He turned to Banner. "So, Bruce, what's your thoughts on high altitude drops?"
"Not much of a fan."
Tony put his arm over Bruce's shoulder. "Well, we're going to have to fix that."
You snorted as Tony led Bruce away. At least someone was having fun with this.
Rhodey turned to you. "That ship you came in with had guns, big guns. Are you going to use them?"
"Wasn't planning on it."
"Well, think about it. Guns that big could be useful in the air, and we're going to need everything we've got to keep this contained." He patted you on the shoulder hard enough to break something. "Good luck."
Sitwell was already gone to coordinate. The moment you left this park the evacuation efforts would begin.
You took another look at the map. Rhdoey wasn't wrong. Putting your ship in the air was a hell of a force multiplier. It wouldn't make as much of an impact as the Iron Legion. But any impact mattered here.
Though if making an impact was your best metric, you could use it more than they could. There were enough parts on that ship to arm yourself a dozen times over. You could create some equipment from your ship and not have it interfere with the nanites at all.
Of course, that would break the ship.
And you liked that ship; it still had a new ship smell.
But whatever you decided to do, you should make the choice now while you still have the chance. Because in about five minutes, you were going to be up to your eyeballs in fire and ash.
At least your armour was self-cleaning, though it wasn't going to keep the new armour smell.
