As far as Soul Gems are concerned, you decide not to distract Kanoko with that knowledge while she's trying to help you out, mainly because you're not sure how she'll react.

However, you do point out the similarities in the souls of both her friend Emiri and another person inside the house to your own soul. You've taken it as a hint that she might be able to answer some questions about your origin, and are hopeful. You can feel apprehension emanating from Kanoko's half of her soul, however. She seems nervous about suddenly learning that one of her friends is not who she always though she was. You have no reassurances to offer her, unfortunately, so you fall silent.

Kanoko does her best not to let this knowledge affect how she treats her friend. She enters the house and you and Arachne enter with her. The interior is similar enough to Kanoko's that you pay no attention to the close details.

"How have you been, Kanoko? Like, OMG, there's been such wild rumors spreading about you. I was super worried that the Wings got you and you'd been turned into one of those Uwasa thingies! Good to see that you're…"

"…uhhhhh… like… what happened to your face?"

Looks like she finally noticed the mask, huh?

Kanoko makes up an excuse about having injured herself while fanatically working. It's not a lie from a certain point of view, you guess.

She is led to a room where the normal human, a man from the looks of him. is preparing meals for the family. This part isn't quite relevant to you, so you tune out and let her talk.

"Hehehehe," chuckled Arachne internally. "Now here's where the fun begins…"

"By fun, you mean tragedy for Kanoko, yes? Why do you wish so badly for her to suffer?" you ask.

The Witch scoffs at your questions. "This human blight upon my greatness still has doubts and hesitates about her art. But those things are useless and just hold us back. Our designs are beyond questioning from these ordinary humans with no sense or style! It would be better if she dedicated her whole body and soul to her work, suffered and bled for her creations to be born. Then her folly would become my wisdom as I blossom into her greatest and final work. And I would turn our suffering into even higher levels of fashion, so that I will captivate even the gods."

Arachne sighs. "Then again… this town is rotten. Witches cannot be born properly. I've felt it since I awoke in this strange way. If you stay here long enough, perhaps we will also discover that truth." It smiles crookedly. "The suffering I will inflict upon those who did this to me will also be beautiful art~!"

You glean from this that it also wants to be separate from Kanoko so it can pursue its own ends.

Hmmm… now that you think about it, splitting the three of you up would solve a lot of your problems. You could pursue knowledge while Kanoko and Arachne each pursue their own path of fashion. You don't really get why they want to, so you'd just wish them well as you chase down this 'Kyubey'.

But before you can think about how to bring this up to Kanoko, your thoughts are interrupted by the owner of the other strange soul walking into the room where Kanoko and Emiri are chatting while eating breakfast. (Kanoko had yet to get anything useful out of her friend, having been talking about clothing).

Kanoko is equally distracted by looking at the figure. But she seems to realize she's staring, and turns back to Emiri to ask who this person is.

Emiri giggles, not having noticed anything off just yet. "Oh, that's my mom, you silly goose!"

A normal person wouldn't have noticed anything odd. To Kanoko, she just looks like a normal human – long black hair, black eyes, wearing a business suit with heels. But in your sight, her skin is as blood red as her eyes, her hair is white, and she has one prominent horn pointing out the center of her forehead. Looks like Kanoko can see what you see just as easily as you see what she sees.

She smiles at you and introduces herself as Shinko Kisaki.

For a second, you think that she's smiling at you specifically and not Kanoko. Can she sense your presence? But you don't know if you can talk to her without giving yourself away to Emiri.

Kanoko introduces herself and Shinko asks what she's doing here. If you had to guess, she seems surprised and on guard. Yes, she's a good bet for getting answers.

"Ah, right! The mushroom you gave me the other day!" Kanoko is finally able to get to the point after surviving Emiri's onslaught of questions.

Shinko gives Emiri an odd look. "Mushrooms? Emiri, dear, I didn't know you were into mycology."

Emiri nervously laughs. "Hehehehe… like, I guess you inspired me, hahaha… ha… ha…" She then looks like she's on the verge of tears. "Please don't be mad…"

Shinko gives her daughter a strained smile. "Oh? But why would I be mad? After all, you must have warned Kanoko to only eat a small piece of it, yes? After all, I did tell you that it would have unpredictable side effects and wasn't actually meant for consumption. Emiri, remember that conversation, dear? I believe I also told you that it was irreplaceable."

You can practically feel Arachne's cavernous laughter as Kanoko's face turns bright red.

Well, looks like her mistake is your gain!

Kanoko and Emiri profusely apologize to Shinko, who can only sigh at the antics of the two. "Still, all is not lost. Rosa will still be disappointed but it looks like something good came out of it. Would you like to show us what's behind the mask, dear Kanoko?"

Kanoko's face contorts into a deep frown. "Ummm… I'd rather not… sorry…"

Shinko frowns as well, but doesn't press the issue. "Very well. But I'm sure you're curious about what exactly you ate, right?"

Kanoko nods. Finally, something useful.

Shinko nods back. "That was a sacred mushroom containing the rescued soul of a nature spirit. I don't know where it originated from; Rosa just left it in my care and said she needed to go into hiding for a bit." She looks off to the side. "I hope she's alright… Anyway, the plan was to let the mushroom grow and the spirit be grown from that, but it looks like that spirit has already awoken inside your body."

…oh, so she was smiling at you and not Kanoko.

Does this mean you can reveal yourself to them now?

Emiri looks confused and speaks up before you can. "Contained a spirit? I thought souls had to, like, be in bodies and stuff. Can they just be in anything? And growing back? Like… what? I'm super confused."

Shinko chuckles. "Good! Sorry dear, but we needed to keep this secret from you. Couldn't risk that pesky Kyubey finding out and ruining everything!"

…from Kanoko's and Emiri's reactions, you gather that it's not normal for those who aren't Magical Girls to know about Kyubey. Shinko laughs at their faces, calling the two of them 'super cute'. Emiri's father, whose name you didn't quite catch, also chuckles and points out that he had the same reactions as the girls are having now when he learned the truth about everything.

"I'd love to stump your mind more, but I do need to get to work… and you two need to get to school," Shinko says. "So, I'll answer any quick questions you have now as a show of good faith and we can get into the full details later. How about it? I think I only have time for three of them though…"

[X] After Shinko leaves…
-[X] Talk to Emiri alone and introduce yourself

--[X] Grouse about her feeding you to her friend.

Three questions pop into your mind pretty much immediately. When you speak through Kanoko's mouth, the voice that comes out sounds the same as hers. You wonder if this is because you have no identity of your own just yet… You'll have to fix that soon.

You ask about this Rosa person. Shinko answers: "Ah, Rosa? She's pretty incredible for just being an ordinary person, you know! We only met in person pretty recently but we have many friends in common… actually, explaining everything about us will take too long. I promise to give you the full story later though, maybe after I get off work! Hopefully, I can track her down too… I'm kinda worried now…"

You decide that you might also want to do some investigating on your own… by which you mean, attempt to convince Kanoko to do that instead of working on more of her fashion designs after school.

You ask about your missing memories. Shinko answers: "Oh, dear. That wasn't supposed to happen. Hmm, so your memories are barricaded behind a set of chained doors? You could try forcing them open, I suppose. Terribly sorry about that…"

You accept the apology. It's not like she was the one responsible for this mess…

You ask about sharing bodies with Kanoko. Shinko answers: "Since all of your subjective experience didn't come back, you should be stable for now. You'll need to find a space for yourself eventually, but I think you have some time. I'd be more worried about something or someone else, to be honest…"

You're pretty certain she means Arachne, and the Witch all but confirms it when it starts cackling maniacally in its half of their soul.

You sigh, and thank her for the answers.

"No problem! I really have to go now, so take care everyone!" With that, she dashes out of the door, runs back in five seconds later to grab a pair of keys, and then runs back out again.

Her husband laughs. "Ah, that's just like her… and you two should be off as well. Here, take this lunch, Emiri dear…" The man hands Emiri a small boxed lunch, then looks at Kanoko. "You have no lunch?"

"No, I normally work on things during lunch…"

The man frowns. "This will not do. Hold on…" He scrounges around the kitchen, and manages to quickly slap together a boxed lunch for her. "Take this. Emiri will bring it back with her. Off to school now~!"

With that, he escorts you to the nearby bus stop, where a bus is just arriving. He waves to you all as you depart.

Kanoko frowns at her lunch, much to your confusion. Thankfully, Emiri also notices and calls it out. "Like, don't worry! My Papa is a great cook!" She punctuates that with a smile, and keeps going.

"So, like, tell me about this nature spirit thing," she whispers conspiratorially in Kanoko's ear. "It sounds super weird, so I'm super into it. Oh my god, could I, like, talk to it? That'd be so cool."

(Roll result: 7 on a d20)

Kanoko isn't pleased with the idea of letting you take over her body, but is convinced to do it after you promise to assist her with her fashion at some point.

Emiri gasps in surprise. "Oh wow! Like, your eye just turned super dull! Hellooooo… Is anyone there?"

You speak: "Yes, I am the nature spirit your mother mentioned. While I must thank you for setting in motion my release, Emiri, I have to wonder if you could have chosen a more… appropriate… method of doing so."

"Eh? Like what do you mean?" she asks innocently.

"…What I'm saying is that I would have preferred having my own body and being resurrected properly!" you growl at her. Your voice comes out louder than you intended, drawing the attention of some of the other passengers and making Emiri flinch. "…Sorry, I'm just… rather upset about not being properly dead or alive, as strange as that might sound to you."

"Yeah, you're right. I don't really get it… but like, I'll help support you!" she exclaims cheerfully, hugging Kanoko's body. It's warm. You like it, and smile. Well, to be precise, Kanoko's half of the body smiles. Arachne only resists the urge to mock your sentimentality since Kanoko wouldn't be humiliated by it.

Soon, you reach Kanoko's school (Mizuna Girls' School). You cede control back over to her after you bid Emiri farewell and promise to meet again after school. Kanoko grimaces at the woman she mentally refers to as the truant officer, who is giving her a stern look. At the same moment, she realizes she left her belongings back home, and there's not enough time to go back and get them.

Despondent, she meanders her way to her classroom, where all the students stare at her appearance in shock. Then they remember it's just Kanoko, and stop caring and go back to what they were doing.

It occurs to you that you have no need to heed these lessons and can attend to other matters.

-[X] (Class 2) Investigate…

You start by investigating the conjoined soul of Kanoko and Arachne. Kanoko resides in the black positive end, and Arachne resides in the white positive end, as you recall.

You examine it closer. It appears to be made out of interwoven threads. Some of those same threads run into your soul as well, from both ends. Within their soul, the threads sharply transition into one another at a boundary zone.

Right now, the shape of their soul is spherical. You pull a bit, but the threads connecting the two do not allow them to be separated. It would take more force than you are capable of right now to do that.

You explore Kanoko's portion of the soul. She appears to have zoned out of her lessons (which are currently on 'Pre-Columbian History of the Americas'), and is fantasizing about being a successful fashion designer and finally having the warm approval of her parents regarding her life choices.

This reminds you that you should help her with her fashion designs. You suppose you could force her to eat during lunch instead of doing that, but it's what she wants so you'll go along with that. Besides, she can eat once the school day ends.

With that decided, you transition into Arachne's portion of the soul…

(Roll result: 17 on a d20)

…and easily avoid falling into a spider's web as you descend into… well, you're not sure where you are to be perfectly honest. You're inside what appears to be a single cavernous room. It's made out of a mix of rusted and grey metal, and metal bars, columns, and platforms are littered all across the area, but these metals are not ones that you are familiar with. Spider webs are everywhere, along with strange humming objects in motion that are taking the threads and turning them into sheets or threading them into spools. What little light there is comes in from broken windows or is generated by glowing balls dangling from the ceiling.

And in the center, you find a being that is half-spider, half-human, all-working.

Arachne does not pause in its tasks as you approach, its four arms humanoid arms manipulating threads into a form that resembles Kanoko's while standing on its four spider-like legs. Currently, it is working on the head, specifically the fine facial details. "Oh, it's you. Have you come to witness the great me work? It's bad luck to witness art in progress, but I guess you wouldn't know that, heheheheheh."

You ask what the Witch is doing.

"Oh this? It's a little project. I want to have it ready for when I inevitably seize full control of this failure of a girl's soul. After all, it'd be a nuisance if those other magical girls figured out what happened, so I'll need a human disguise. …This requires my full attention. You will need to leave me be. Besides, that foolish girl is calling for you now. Try not to let her die before I'm ready, okay?"

Confused, you depart Arachne's portion of the soul and tune back into your surroundings. It looks like class is over now and she's wandering in the halls. She breathes a sigh of relief when she can sense you again. Unbeknownst to you, the two of you have caught the eye of a purple-haired girl, stalking Kanoko from a distance.

"Glad you're back… you're going to help me now, right?"

You agree, and ask what you'll be doing. You are still just a soul without a body, after all.

"Just tell me what you think about some of the designs I came up with in that inspired state. I can just sneak into the Art Club and re-draw them… ah, here it is."

Sure enough, the door is unlocked. Art supplies are littered everywhere in the big room. Half the space is fully open; the other half is dominated by two long tables. Kanoko grabs an easel and several colored pencils and gets to drawing. She's totally focused, only stopping to ask you questions about what you think.

…You now nothing about art though.

(Roll result: 2 on a d20)

Despite your best efforts, you're essentially useless to her.

You apologize, but it doesn't help. The balance of power in their soul has shifted in favor of Arachne instead of being split evenly. You can hear the Witch laughing in ecstatic glee and muttering something about how 'soon her soul will be mine!' before it goes back to its work.

Luckily for you, another girl walks in and saves you.

"Kanoko? So, this is where you are! …Kanoko? …Hey, don't just ignore me, the beautiful Ria Ami!"

Kanoko finishes her drawing, rips it off the easel, and only then notices that Ria has entered the room. Ria is blonde like Emiri, but her eyes are blue instead of red. Instinctively, you search for her soul, and sure enough, it's not in her body. It's localized on her person in what looks like a ring.

Yet another magical girl.

"Eh, Ria? What are you doing here?" Kanoko asks.

Ria pouts, and wags her finger at Kanoko. "Looking for you! Honestly! You need to pay more attention to your surroundings! Rumors are spreading that you're hiding something hideous beneath that white mask. It would not do for you to become one of those dreadful Uwasa before you complete the beautiful Metal Clothing you were designing for the beautiful me. So, what's going on with you?"

"Well, the designs are almost done, and-"

Ria interjects. "No! Wrong! I'm asking about you, not your fashion!"

Kanoko stares at Ria in confusion for a moment. "I'm… fine?"

"Well, you don't look fine! Your entire face is pale and… eh? Did I say something wrong?"

You can feel Kanoko's panic. She runs to the nearest mirror and not only her face, but also her entire body is one or two shades closer to chitinous white than it was before. She manages to resist the urge to scream again, and takes a deep breath instead. She mutters to herself. "I won't give up on my dream… I won't give up on my dream… I won't give up on my dream…"

There's suddenly a hand on Kanoko's back. It's Ria's. "Ummm… I don't know what's going on, but I agree! You shouldn't give up! If the beautiful me will not surrender to anyone, not even my rival Yachiyo who I hope to find and defeat soon, then you shouldn't surrender to whatever curse has befallen you either!"

Between her own chants, Ria's encouragement, and some secret support from you, Kanoko recovers a bit. She doesn't give Ria the full details, but explains that it was caused by a Witch, not an Uwasa.

…which reminds you that you don't actually know what an Uwasa is, exactly. You'll have to ask later.

"I see!" Ria exclaims. "So it has disfigured your face and now your body. How unfortunate! You aren't as beautiful as me, of course, but you have your own charms. If I can assist you in any way, don't hesitate to reach out. You have my number, right?"

Kanoko does. She changes the subject by asking about this missing 'Yachiyo' person. According to Ria, the so-called 'Wings of Magius' are responsible for her vanishing, but do not admit guilt or divulge information. So her team of herself and a few other magical girls has been at an impasse for a while.

Kanoko offers to help, but Ria insists that Kanoko take care of herself first.

…Speaking of which, Kanoko's stomach choses that moment to growl.

A grumpy Ria forces Kanoko to spend the rest of lunch eating with her and three of her other friends. They bid Kanoko a supportive farewell as she returns to class alone.

You then return to your soul investigations, but this time you turn inwards and look into yourself.

…You find yourself in a place you don't recognize. You're in a foggy swamp. Mushrooms are plentiful and grow out of the ground and the trees. You can hear only your own breathing and heartbeat.

You look down at your hands.

They're not the same as Kanoko's. The skin tone is much darker and browner.

Excitement surges through you. You immediately rush to the nearest body of water and look into it. Is this your body? Is this your face? You peer into the swampy depths and see…

…deep black eyes and long unkempt black hair framing the face of the human sacrifice you saw in your visions. It's not your face and body; it's a copy of hers… whoever she was. Still, it's something.

You get up and wander around for some time. The swamp is dead yet peaceful in its stillness.

Eventually, you come across a large clearing and find yourself at the shore of a large lake. The fog is not so dense here. You can see an island in the center of the lake, and upon that island is a stone step pyramid. At the top-most platform is the chained and barricaded door. It leads nowhere yet something is behind it. Or rather, inside it. Emanating from it, you can feel connections to Kanoko… to Arachne…

…and one more!?

(Roll result: 15 on a d20)

You can't precisely tell where the person is, but you can pin them down to somewhere in Kamihama. By your estimate they're either close by in Mizuna ward or by its borders in a nearby ward. You also get a name: Xochitl. You wonder if this the same person as Rosa. Maybe one of the names is fake?

You immediately alert Kanoko of your finding. Arachne also pauses in her work, suddenly interested in this development. But the human girl in class and can't leave yet, even though she's not paying any attention to the English lesson.

The Witch chuckles menacingly. "Don't worry, I can fix that."

Before you can ask it to clarify what it meant by that, it sends a sudden jolt through Kanoko's soul, and she falls out of her seat, clutching her head in pain. The purple-haired girl frowns as you all depart.

She's excused from the rest of her classes, but you can't help but think there was a better method that could have been used. She shows the truant officer her note as she leaves the school grounds.

"Now what?" she asks, still holding one hand to her head. "Emiri is still in school."

"Now… sit back and watch!" exclaims the Witch.

You can feel magic churning in their conjoined soul. Kanoko ducks into a nearby alley so she can't be seen. She pulls out the Soul Gem and Grief Seed hybrid. Black and white threads spew forth from it, coalescing into the form of another Kanoko. You feel a tug, and you're pulled into that other body.

You blink in surprise.

"Not bad, right? It's not done yet, but it'll work for now…" speaks Arachne from the new body. Kanoko is staring at you in shock. She pulls her mask off, but her face hasn't changed from its altered state. She notes that you're wearing her magical girl outfit, but all the blacks are greys. Similarly, the eyes and hair are greyed out on the right side of the body. On the left side, the eye is red and the hair is white.

You speak. It sounds like Kanoko's voice, but flattened and in a monotone. "We will search for this girl who is entangled with my soul. Perhaps she is Rosa or perhaps not. Either way, I must make sure that she ends up under my protection. Kanoko, will you please go on to meet with Emiri as we planned?"

Still a bit stunned, she agrees and walks back into public view, mask back on.

In the hidden alleyways, you and Arachne move in search of the unknown girl.

Chapter 3: Triunity
Episode 1

You're not sure how long you've been searching and you're not sure where exactly you are.

You keep hidden and stay out of sight by running in the alleyways and upon rooftops. This is done not for yourself, but for Kanoko and Arachne, whose body your are sharing for now.

But not forever, you hope.

The girl who you are looking for, the soul you are tracking. It's in motion.

(Roll result: 20 on a d20)

She's stopped in a building not too far from you. This is your chance!

You hop down from your perch and dash through streets which are becoming emptier and emptier. You feel a sense of menace emanating from the same place you're heading towards. With no active force, it suggests to these ordinary people to stay away. Not to impede lest they suffer its wrath.

You ignore it and march on.

(Roll result: 3 on a d20)

In your eagerness to discover who the missing link is, you don't notice your assailant until she's almost right on top of you.

She shouts as she lunges at you from around the corner of a building you just passed. You're slashed at with a sword (cutlass) by a girl wearing a frilly blue shirt with a white X emblazoned on it and white cuffs and shoulder-pads, loose blue pants, and a cylindrical blue hat attached to her head by a white strap.

You can see the fierce determination in the girl's black eyes as she easily slashes open your front.

If you were a normal human, this would have killed you.

Fortunately, this body is only assembled threads. Yes, it's still painful – if anything it's more painful than your sudden and quick death long ago – but you'll live. Arachne reels the threads back in.

Instinctively, you summon a weapon – another sword (rapier). It must be Kanoko's.

The girl is standing directly in front of you and staring at you in horror. She starts backing away.

"What… what are you!?" she exclaims. "Ariel told us to keep a look out for other magical girls, not… whatever you are!"

You note that she's speaking English, not Japanese as Kanoko and Arachne do. Her soul is localized in a gem embedded into a patch in the center of her hat and…

…wait, did she say something about… 'us'?

(Roll result: 7 on a d20)

In your weakened state, you're only barely able to dodge an attack from behind, falling onto the ground as you do so. It's a red pulse of energy, a pressure wave. The other girl also dodges it, but much more gracefully. The wave crashes into a building and heavily damages it. As you stand, you hear a squeak coming from the same direction as the attack and turn and look that way.

You see another girl. She's wearing tight and sparkling red shirt with her midriff exposed. Her pants are loose, but just as shiny and red. She also has black eyes. She's holding something you don't recognize. Arachne tells you it's something called a microphone and stand, meant to make voices louder.

Now that you think about it, the two of them look quite similar – black eyes, black hair, fair skin, faces the resemble each other. The one in blue just happens to be quite a bit taller than the other one.

The blue girl approaches the red one. "I'm okay, Isabelle! It's alright. Let's fight together now."

The red girl nods but does not speak. Her soul is localized inside an earring on her right ear.

The blue girl speaks again, cutlass raised and on guard. "My name is Tatiana. Who and what are you!?"

Hm. You could answer and attempt to convince them to get out of your way. On the other hand, Arachne is eager for a fight and they did just try to kill you.

The girl you are tracking has started to move and the menacing presence is following it.

You just want them to get out of your way. Now.

(QM Note: Combat is narratively-driven. Rolls in combat are for surprise attacks only.)

[] Run.

[] Fight.
-[] Attack the red girl.
-[] Attack the blue girl.
-[] Let Arachne take charge.

[] Diplomacy.
-[] Say what? (write-in; up to three key points)

[X] Plan: Knight In Shining...Threads?
[X] Run.
-[X] dodge the girls' attacks (if they attack), and sprint to the girl you were tracking
-[X] get the girl you were tracking out of danger first, then deal with everyone else

Did I do it right?
idk if I could add write ins or not.

I'll accept it; it's in the spirit of where that vote would lead

Votes closed btw.

edit for clarity: The dice rolls are independent of each other. One girl will attack you and Arachne will attack the other one.
