You can hear a voice resonating through your body as you groggily awaken from a long slumber.

"Ughhhh… I don't remember falling asleep. How long was I out?"

You can see nothing, not even your own body, but you can hear going on everything around you clearly.

You move along with the voice as it walks around in a space. The voice comments on the time – apparently this person slept for an entire day. The voice comments on its surroundings – it's within its bedroom, surrounded by clothing designs made in a state of mystical mushroom-induced inspiration. The designs include mushrooms, noted with dismay, but also with many other motifs that had not been used before such as butterflies, cats, coyotes, crocodiles, dogs, flowers, herons, hummingbirds, jaguars, snakes, and the sun. The clothing is varied and includes plain attire, warrior's armor, and sacred robes.

You focus, and sense another source of life energy entangled with yours. In your focused state, you note that the second source has a black positive end and a white negative end, while yours is uniform. Strangely, that source of life has remained totally stationary while you've been moving around it.

So then, you're sharing this body with someone and…

Wait.

That doesn't sound quite right. You distinctly feel like you're supposed to have your own body.

Confusion wells up within you.

You struggle to remember. It looks like whatever happened to your body also took out large portions of your memory. You can't even remember your name. But… you can remember… that you died…

(Choose only one.)
[] after prolonged combat.
[] after being ambushed.
[] after a ritual went awry.
[] after a fire broke out.

…which means you should've been sent to the afterlife like normal, so you could be reborn normally. But… you can't remember actually ending up there. In fact, you can't remember anything that happened after you died, or who exactly you were fighting. And your memories of your life are just vague and indistinct impressions that you can barely conjure up. It's like…

…like they're sealed away…

You have the vivid impression of barricaded and chained doors that your old identity is kept behind.

You are supposed to lose your old identity when you suffer true death so you can attain a new one. You can remember this. But right now, you have nothing. You are no one – just a bundle of thoughts.

Confusion turns into panic. Something has gone terribly wrong.

"Hm?"

The voice seems to have noticed that something is off.

"Is someone there?"

You attempt to speak to her… but another voice interjects before you can say anything.

"It's about time you noticed my great presence, you fool!" exclaims another voice coming from around the same location. In fact, you focus again, and you can feel that it came from the negative end. The other voice came from the positive one. "Astounding! We worked together to make such wonderful art over the past few days, and yet you forget that I exist so easily? You scoundrel! You worm! You are truly beneath me! I should have seized full control of our body when I had the chance!"

…Whoever this person is, they seem quite upset.

"…! What the…!? Who are you and how are you speaking from my mouth?"

"Ughh… why did I have to share a body with you of all people!? I am you! Another you! And frankly, a much better you, if I do say so myself… or rather, you're an inferior me…"

One of the voice scoffs. "As if! There's only room for one me and… Ah!! My Soul Gem!!" She suddenly sounds panicked, like how you feel. "Why is it…!? Half of it is a Grief Seed!? Or rather, it looks like its fused together with one… so then, you're a Witch! But why…"

The other voice groans. "Great! Now I'm stuck with you! Grrr… I should have let you fall into despair while you were so in touch with your emotions." They then sighed. "Oh well… maybe I'll get another chance. By the way, I hope you don't mind being stuck with this poor sap and her antics."

…It takes you a moment to realize that said voice was referring to you. Before you can speak up though, the first voice starts thinking aloud.

"Wait… you're a Witch… you're born from despair… and your seed is merged with my soul gem… Ah-ha! That means that Witches are born from Magical Girls!" She sounds proud of herself for the realization, until she realizes something else. "OH NO!!! This is terrible! What am I gonna do!? Alright Kanoko, calm down and think… how am I gonna get out of this one…? There has to be something I can do…"

"There's no 'getting out of this'; it's fate! Now hurry up and go mad from the revelation so I can take over already!" demanded the second voice. "My creative genius yearns to get back to my fashion…"

"…No. I don't think I will. And it's my fashion, since you're just a part of me." Kanoko plainly stated. "But seriously, I need to get ready for school, so go kindly go back to sleep, thanks."

"…What. You can't simply choose not to fall into despair! That's not how this works!"

"Well, looks like I did, so there! Looks like you're the fool after all!" Kanoko then laughs at her Witch.

You wonder if this means she's laughing at herself or not.

"…Your disrespect is intolerable. Rest assured, this body will be mine one day. And considering that you still haven't noticed our guest yet, you're in no position to call my great self a fool."

"Huh? What are you talking about? Someone else…?"

Hello everyone! I've been active in a few quests here and over at SB, and I've decided to try out running one of my own.

In this quest, you will be piloting an entity currently trapped in the body of a Magical Girl from Magia Record (a spin-off game in the Madoka Magica universe).
Your first set of goals will be to discover who you used to be, to get your own body, and to decide who you will become.
You may decide to pursue more goals as the quest goes on and you acquire more knowledge and skills (detailed in the next post).

As far as voting mechanics goes, a mix of single-choice and plan votes will be used and they will be clearly indicated as such.

[X] Speak
-[X] Hello?
-[X] I don't know why I'm here, but I'm pleased to meet you.
-[X] Most of my memories are gone, but thanks for letting me be here!

You attempt to greet them with a simple hello, but it comes out as a whisper.

(Roll result: 4 on a d20)

"Hello?"

Annoyed, you try again.

(Roll result: 1 on a d20)

"Hello? Can you hear me?"

It came out even softer that time!?

"…You're hearing things. There's no one else here," Kanoko concludes, much to your frustration.

"Hmph! Believe what you wish, but I'm telling the truth. …I can only pity our guest even more now…" the Witch adds. "Not only does it also have to deal with your foolishness, it can't even voice any of its myriad complaints! This is why you should just-"

(Roll result: 19 on a d20)

Frustrated, you put all your effort into it and try to speak again, cutting the Witch off.

"HELLO THERE! I DON'T KNOW WHY I'M HERE BUT I'M PLEASED TO MEET YOU!" you bellow at near maximum volume inside Kanoko's head. You feel yourself, falling over, then landing on something. She must have fallen over in surprise, you conclude. You apologize for shouting at her, now able to speak at a more reasonable volume.

"No problem… owww…" she says. "…but wait, who are you? You're not another Witch, are you?"

Both you and the Witch answer in the negative.

"This soul doesn't feel like a Witch… or like a human at all for that matter," it points out.

"Yes… I was not a human… I remember…" You vividly recall how you died due to that failed ritual. Bits and pieces of thoughts come to you as visions. A human sacrifice, prepared over days. Your essence channeled through prayers and magic. Your soul and their flesh merging; two becoming one. And then…

Red eyes.

White body.

An unflinching stare, an indomitable will.

Someone shouts. You can't tell who.

Your host was suddenly impaled by an arrow from an unknown assailant, and then you knew no more.

It's strange. Dying in such a manner would make you a prime suspect for rebirth as your soul slowly regenerated in the afterlife, yet here you are, trapped in between lives. This girl has freed you somehow, but not in the proper way, so you're stuck inside her body for now.

You sigh. "Most of my old memories are gone… along with the host I was supposed to have. I thank you for allowing me to reside in your body, but this is highly improper. Either you need to prepare yourself like a proper human sacrifice or I need to be freed from your body as soon as you can manage."

The Witch laughs out loud. "HAHAHAHA! Yes! Do it! You'd be doing me such a favor!"

Kanoko frowns, ignoring her Witch. "Human sacrifice? Are you sure you're not a Witch? And what was that vision with all those people and a Kyubey look-a-like in it? I saw all the same things you were describing. …Hm. Can you see what I see?"

You confirm that you cannot.

(Roll result: 20 on a d20)

With ease, you focus and grant yourself the ability to see what Kanoko sees, sense what she senses, and so on. You stop short of fully taking control over her body, although you suspect you'd have no issues doing it in a pinch. It would be inappropriate since you were never properly invited in. You confirm to her that you can see things quite clearly, and feel her smiling.

Well, half of her smiling. The other half of her mouth doesn't move, twisted into a scowl. You point this out to her.

"Oh, don't ruin the surprise... I wanted one of her so-called 'friends' to point it out. And maybe get confused and attack her, driving her to despair," the Witch says, adding on a cackle at the end.

"…"

You can feel Kanoko's apprehension. She stands up and looks over at the nearest mirror.

"AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!"

"HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"

To be fair, you're not sure what the issue is until you realize you also can only see out of one eye – Kanoko's pale blue one, on the right side of her face. On the let side of her face, the one eye you'd expect to see on a normal human has been replaced by 4 red ones, glowing with ill intent. Instead of the pale skin on Kanoko's half of the face, her Witch has a chitinous exterior in the shade of…

(Choose only one)
[] black.
[] white.
[] gray.
[] brown.

You witness as Kanoko screams at her Witch to fix this, and the Witch refuses to. You're not sure why the Witch is being so antagonistic to someone who is technically herself, but you're pretty sure this has nothing to do with you. At least, you hope so. You interrupt them, now that you can.

"You called that odd creature I saw, a… 'Kyubey'"? you ask.

Kanoko, who was now searching for a mask with which to cover herself, responds. "Yeah, Kyubey. He's the one who grants out wishes and turns us into Magical Girls! That white cat you saw looked kinda like him, like if he was better at imitating real animals. …Now where is it…?"

You wait for the Witch to comment, but it seems content to simply watch Kanoko suffer for now.

Kanoko pulls out a plain white mask that covers the left half of her face. It fits her head comfortably.

She continues. "No one has seen Kyubey in months though. Hmm… maybe the Coordinator might have an idea where the real Kyubey is now… we only have the little Kyubey here, and we'd have to search for it. Last I heard, it was in the company of Iroha's friends since she up and vanished not too long ago."

She pauses in thought for a moment, then goes on. "Then again, Emiri was the one who gave me that strange mushroom. I think my eating that is why you're awake again… and why I'm part Witch now… She has some explaining to do!" She adds a growl and a frown at the end in an attempt to appear menacing. It doesn't work on you or her Witch (who is laughing to herself).

Looks like you have options for starting your investigation.

(Choose only one.)
[] Maybe this Coordinator person can give you a lead?
[] Maybe seeing the little Kyubey will jog some more memories?
[] Maybe Kanoko can get her friend to reveal something important?

Chapter 2: The Demon (?) Next Door
Episode 1

QM Note: Honorifics generally will not be used in this quest.

You want to talk to Kanoko's friend, the one called Emiri. You're not sure how much she can tell you – nothing about this place resembles the place where you died as far as you can remember – but maybe she can at least point you towards someone who knows more. According to Kanoko, she gave Kanoko the strange mushroom upon hearing that Kanoko was in a creative slump and needed inspiration.

Judging by the state of Kanoko's bedroom, as she called it, littered not only with a legion of hand-drawn designs but also with actual pieces of hand-woven clothing, the attempt was a success beyond her wildest dreams. Only, it came with side effects she wished she had been warned about...

As she leaves her house with you and her Soul Gem in tow, you thank her again for hosting your soul. She's grateful to you as she locks up behind her.

She's wearing her school uniform, a pink dress, and has the half of her face controlled by her Witch concealed by a white mask that's the same color as the Witch's chitinous body. Luckily for Kanoko, it perfectly covers up her partial transformation. There's no eye-hole in the mask, blinding the being. It grumbles a bit, but ultimately leaves the matter alone for now. The being, who knows itself as 'Arachne, the Witch of Woven Threads', also wants an explanation for how Kanoko had survived its awakening. It is willing to be patient, especially if there's a chance for Kanoko to die or for it to gain its own body.

The sun is just starting to rise as you approach a nearby bus station.

Kanoko surmises the three of you will have plenty of time before she has to head to her own school. Despite not being an early morning person, she doesn't feel tired. Perhaps this is another effect from the mushroom?

On the way to Emiri's place by bus, she explains a bit of the layout of Kamihama City. The city is split into several 'wards' – right now, they're leaving Kosho ward in the eastern part of the city. For various reasons, Kanoko attends school in Mizuna ward in the west. Emiri also goes to school in the west, but in the Shinsei ward. However, they can try to catch her in Sakae ward where she lives before she departs. This ward is directly west of where she lives, so its not too much of a detour.

The more you observe your surroundings, the more certain you are that where you died and where you are now are quite different places. The architecture and people look unfamiliar to you, especially when you compare what you see to what you remember. Everyone in your vision had much darker skin than the people who see on the bus. The buildings only have a vague resemblance to what little you recall. There was more stone and wood before.

You point this out to Kanoko, but she can offer you no definite answers.

She also explains a bit about Magical Girls. Apparently, she, Emiri, and the other girls she mentioned were all given magical powers by this being in exchange for serving them by hunting and killing the deadly creatures such as Witches. Transforming and using your powers darkens the Soul Gem, and she used to believe that if it went fully black, she would run out of magic. But know she knows the truth… too much impurity leads to turning into a Witch. This can be prevented by killing Witches and using their Grief Seeds to store the impurity. Fully spent Grief Seeds then needed to be destroyed, as Kyubey was not around to come and pick them up. Currently, another magical girl, the Coordinator mentioned before, was providing this service.

But now her Soul Gem is also a Grief Seed, so she's not sure what that means. You can sense that the conjoined soul of Kanoko and Arachne is located within the stone, but she seems to think her soul is still in her body. You wonder if you should correct this error in her thought.

(Choose one of these in conjunction with the vote below.)
[] while conversing with Emiri if it comes up
[] sometime after that, when appropriate
[] never, it's not terribly relevant to you

Eventually, Kanoko steps off the bus, and the curious glances in her direction end. It's only a short walk from where you end up to Emiri's house. Her house resembles Kanoko's enough that you don't focus on any of the fine details. Kanoko knocks on the door and the three of you wait patiently.

"Like, who is it~?" rings out a voice from inside. Kanoko recognizes it.

"Good morning, Emiri! It's me, Kanoko!" she responds. Focusing on you and Arachne, she mutters under her breath. "Alright, hopefully we can get some help here… she's normally pretty good at helping people solve their problems. I'll handle this, so both of you keep quiet for now."

"Sure, I'll sit back and watch you fail at this basic task. I'll amuse me further," says the Witch. "Maybe if I'm lucky, this is all it'll take, hahahaha…" The taunting complete, it falls silent.

You simply agree and decide to keep silent for now. While waiting, you're curious to see how Emiri's soul compares to Kanoko's. Since they're both Magical Girls and all. You focus your senses and locating another specific source of life energy comes easily to you now that you know what to look for.

Sure enough, as Emiri opens the door, looks out at Kanoko, and greets her, you can sense her that soul is localized on a separate location on her person, not delocalized within her body like you are within Kanoko. You can also sense two other sources of life inside the house. You guess those should be her parents. You note that Emiri's soul is uniformly positive. However, it doesn't feel quite like Kanoko's soul, and not in the same way that all the humans you've come across so far are slightly different from each other.

No, her soul, and one of the souls inside the house, somewhat resemble yours.

[] Point this out to Kanoko.
-[] Emiri only
-[] The other soul
-[] Both

[] Let Kanoko speak without your input.
-[] Total silence unless summoned

As far as Soul Gems are concerned, you decide not to distract Kanoko with that knowledge while she's trying to help you out, mainly because you're not sure how she'll react.

However, you do point out the similarities in the souls of both her friend Emiri and another person inside the house to your own soul. You've taken it as a hint that she might be able to answer some questions about your origin, and are hopeful. You can feel apprehension emanating from Kanoko's half of her soul, however. She seems nervous about suddenly learning that one of her friends is not who she always though she was. You have no reassurances to offer her, unfortunately, so you fall silent.

Kanoko does her best not to let this knowledge affect how she treats her friend. She enters the house and you and Arachne enter with her. The interior is similar enough to Kanoko's that you pay no attention to the close details.

"How have you been, Kanoko? Like, OMG, there's been such wild rumors spreading about you. I was super worried that the Wings got you and you'd been turned into one of those Uwasa thingies! Good to see that you're…"

"…uhhhhh… like… what happened to your face?"

Looks like she finally noticed the mask, huh?

Kanoko makes up an excuse about having injured herself while fanatically working. It's not a lie from a certain point of view, you guess.

She is led to a room where the normal human, a man from the looks of him. is preparing meals for the family. This part isn't quite relevant to you, so you tune out and let her talk.

"Hehehehe," chuckled Arachne internally. "Now here's where the fun begins…"

"By fun, you mean tragedy for Kanoko, yes? Why do you wish so badly for her to suffer?" you ask.

The Witch scoffs at your questions. "This human blight upon my greatness still has doubts and hesitates about her art. But those things are useless and just hold us back. Our designs are beyond questioning from these ordinary humans with no sense or style! It would be better if she dedicated her whole body and soul to her work, suffered and bled for her creations to be born. Then her folly would become my wisdom as I blossom into her greatest and final work. And I would turn our suffering into even higher levels of fashion, so that I will captivate even the gods."

Arachne sighs. "Then again… this town is rotten. Witches cannot be born properly. I've felt it since I awoke in this strange way. If you stay here long enough, perhaps we will also discover that truth." It smiles crookedly. "The suffering I will inflict upon those who did this to me will also be beautiful art~!"

You glean from this that it also wants to be separate from Kanoko so it can pursue its own ends.

Hmmm… now that you think about it, splitting the three of you up would solve a lot of your problems. You could pursue knowledge while Kanoko and Arachne each pursue their own path of fashion. You don't really get why they want to, so you'd just wish them well as you chase down this 'Kyubey'.

But before you can think about how to bring this up to Kanoko, your thoughts are interrupted by the owner of the other strange soul walking into the room where Kanoko and Emiri are chatting while eating breakfast. (Kanoko had yet to get anything useful out of her friend, having been talking about clothing).

Kanoko is equally distracted by looking at the figure. But she seems to realize she's staring, and turns back to Emiri to ask who this person is.

Emiri giggles, not having noticed anything off just yet. "Oh, that's my mom, you silly goose!"

A normal person wouldn't have noticed anything odd. To Kanoko, she just looks like a normal human – long black hair, black eyes, wearing a business suit with heels. But in your sight, her skin is as blood red as her eyes, her hair is white, and she has one prominent horn pointing out the center of her forehead. Looks like Kanoko can see what you see just as easily as you see what she sees.

She smiles at you and introduces herself as Shinko Kisaki.

For a second, you think that she's smiling at you specifically and not Kanoko. Can she sense your presence? But you don't know if you can talk to her without giving yourself away to Emiri.

Kanoko introduces herself and Shinko asks what she's doing here. If you had to guess, she seems surprised and on guard. Yes, she's a good bet for getting answers.

"Ah, right! The mushroom you gave me the other day!" Kanoko is finally able to get to the point after surviving Emiri's onslaught of questions.

Shinko gives Emiri an odd look. "Mushrooms? Emiri, dear, I didn't know you were into mycology."

Emiri nervously laughs. "Hehehehe… like, I guess you inspired me, hahaha… ha… ha…" She then looks like she's on the verge of tears. "Please don't be mad…"

Shinko gives her daughter a strained smile. "Oh? But why would I be mad? After all, you must have warned Kanoko to only eat a small piece of it, yes? After all, I did tell you that it would have unpredictable side effects and wasn't actually meant for consumption. Emiri, remember that conversation, dear? I believe I also told you that it was irreplaceable."

You can practically feel Arachne's cavernous laughter as Kanoko's face turns bright red.

Well, looks like her mistake is your gain!

Kanoko and Emiri profusely apologize to Shinko, who can only sigh at the antics of the two. "Still, all is not lost. Rosa will still be disappointed but it looks like something good came out of it. Would you like to show us what's behind the mask, dear Kanoko?"

Kanoko's face contorts into a deep frown. "Ummm… I'd rather not… sorry…"

Shinko frowns as well, but doesn't press the issue. "Very well. But I'm sure you're curious about what exactly you ate, right?"

Kanoko nods. Finally, something useful.

Shinko nods back. "That was a sacred mushroom containing the rescued soul of a nature spirit. I don't know where it originated from; Rosa just left it in my care and said she needed to go into hiding for a bit." She looks off to the side. "I hope she's alright… Anyway, the plan was to let the mushroom grow and the spirit be grown from that, but it looks like that spirit has already awoken inside your body."

…oh, so she was smiling at you and not Kanoko.

Does this mean you can reveal yourself to them now?

Emiri looks confused and speaks up before you can. "Contained a spirit? I thought souls had to, like, be in bodies and stuff. Can they just be in anything? And growing back? Like… what? I'm super confused."

Shinko chuckles. "Good! Sorry dear, but we needed to keep this secret from you. Couldn't risk that pesky Kyubey finding out and ruining everything!"

…from Kanoko's and Emiri's reactions, you gather that it's not normal for those who aren't Magical Girls to know about Kyubey. Shinko laughs at their faces, calling the two of them 'super cute'. Emiri's father, whose name you didn't quite catch, also chuckles and points out that he had the same reactions as the girls are having now when he learned the truth about everything.

"I'd love to stump your mind more, but I do need to get to work… and you two need to get to school," Shinko says. "So, I'll answer any quick questions you have now as a show of good faith and we can get into the full details later. How about it? I think I only have time for three of them though…"

Chapter 2, Episode 3
Winning vote:
[X] Sure, thanks!
-[X] Who is this Rosa she mentioned?
-[X] Do you know a way to get my memories back?
-[X] Is it safe for me to be sharing Kanoko's body like this?

[X] After Shinko leaves…
-[X] Talk to Emiri alone and introduce yourself

--[X] Grouse about her feeding you to her friend.

Three questions pop into your mind pretty much immediately. When you speak through Kanoko's mouth, the voice that comes out sounds the same as hers. You wonder if this is because you have no identity of your own just yet… You'll have to fix that soon.

You ask about this Rosa person. Shinko answers: "Ah, Rosa? She's pretty incredible for just being an ordinary person, you know! We only met in person pretty recently but we have many friends in common… actually, explaining everything about us will take too long. I promise to give you the full story later though, maybe after I get off work! Hopefully, I can track her down too… I'm kinda worried now…"

You decide that you might also want to do some investigating on your own… by which you mean, attempt to convince Kanoko to do that instead of working on more of her fashion designs after school.

You ask about your missing memories. Shinko answers: "Oh, dear. That wasn't supposed to happen. Hmm, so your memories are barricaded behind a set of chained doors? You could try forcing them open, I suppose. Terribly sorry about that…"

You accept the apology. It's not like she was the one responsible for this mess…

You ask about sharing bodies with Kanoko. Shinko answers: "Since all of your subjective experience didn't come back, you should be stable for now. You'll need to find a space for yourself eventually, but I think you have some time. I'd be more worried about something or someone else, to be honest…"

You're pretty certain she means Arachne, and the Witch all but confirms it when it starts cackling maniacally in its half of their soul.

You sigh, and thank her for the answers.

"No problem! I really have to go now, so take care everyone!" With that, she dashes out of the door, runs back in five seconds later to grab a pair of keys, and then runs back out again.

Her husband laughs. "Ah, that's just like her… and you two should be off as well. Here, take this lunch, Emiri dear…" The man hands Emiri a small boxed lunch, then looks at Kanoko. "You have no lunch?"

"No, I normally work on things during lunch…"

The man frowns. "This will not do. Hold on…" He scrounges around the kitchen, and manages to quickly slap together a boxed lunch for her. "Take this. Emiri will bring it back with her. Off to school now~!"

With that, he escorts you to the nearby bus stop, where a bus is just arriving. He waves to you all as you depart.

Kanoko frowns at her lunch, much to your confusion. Thankfully, Emiri also notices and calls it out. "Like, don't worry! My Papa is a great cook!" She punctuates that with a smile, and keeps going.

"So, like, tell me about this nature spirit thing," she whispers conspiratorially in Kanoko's ear. "It sounds super weird, so I'm super into it. Oh my god, could I, like, talk to it? That'd be so cool."

(Roll result: 7 on a d20)

Kanoko isn't pleased with the idea of letting you take over her body, but is convinced to do it after you promise to assist her with her fashion at some point.

Emiri gasps in surprise. "Oh wow! Like, your eye just turned super dull! Hellooooo… Is anyone there?"

You speak: "Yes, I am the nature spirit your mother mentioned. While I must thank you for setting in motion my release, Emiri, I have to wonder if you could have chosen a more… appropriate… method of doing so."

"Eh? Like what do you mean?" she asks innocently.

"…What I'm saying is that I would have preferred having my own body and being resurrected properly!" you growl at her. Your voice comes out louder than you intended, drawing the attention of some of the other passengers and making Emiri flinch. "…Sorry, I'm just… rather upset about not being properly dead or alive, as strange as that might sound to you."

"Yeah, you're right. I don't really get it… but like, I'll help support you!" she exclaims cheerfully, hugging Kanoko's body. It's warm. You like it, and smile. Well, to be precise, Kanoko's half of the body smiles. Arachne only resists the urge to mock your sentimentality since Kanoko wouldn't be humiliated by it.

Soon, you reach Kanoko's school (Mizuna Girls' School). You cede control back over to her after you bid Emiri farewell and promise to meet again after school. Kanoko grimaces at the woman she mentally refers to as the truant officer, who is giving her a stern look. At the same moment, she realizes she left her belongings back home, and there's not enough time to go back and get them.

Despondent, she meanders her way to her classroom, where all the students stare at her appearance in shock. Then they remember it's just Kanoko, and stop caring and go back to what they were doing.

It occurs to you that you have no need to heed these lessons and can attend to other matters.

[X] Plan Souls and Promises
-[X] (Class 1) Investigate…
--[X] …Kanoko's and Arachne's soul
-[X] (Lunch) Help Kanoko with fashion
-[X] (Class 2) Investigate…
--[X] …your own soul

You start by investigating the conjoined soul of Kanoko and Arachne. Kanoko resides in the black positive end, and Arachne resides in the white positive end, as you recall.

You examine it closer. It appears to be made out of interwoven threads. Some of those same threads run into your soul as well, from both ends. Within their soul, the threads sharply transition into one another at a boundary zone.

Right now, the shape of their soul is spherical. You pull a bit, but the threads connecting the two do not allow them to be separated. It would take more force than you are capable of right now to do that.

You explore Kanoko's portion of the soul. She appears to have zoned out of her lessons (which are currently on 'Pre-Columbian History of the Americas'), and is fantasizing about being a successful fashion designer and finally having the warm approval of her parents regarding her life choices.

This reminds you that you should help her with her fashion designs. You suppose you could force her to eat during lunch instead of doing that, but it's what she wants so you'll go along with that. Besides, she can eat once the school day ends.

With that decided, you transition into Arachne's portion of the soul…

(Roll result: 17 on a d20)

…and easily avoid falling into a spider's web as you descend into… well, you're not sure where you are to be perfectly honest. You're inside what appears to be a single cavernous room. It's made out of a mix of rusted and grey metal, and metal bars, columns, and platforms are littered all across the area, but these metals are not ones that you are familiar with. Spider webs are everywhere, along with strange humming objects in motion that are taking the threads and turning them into sheets or threading them into spools. What little light there is comes in from broken windows or is generated by glowing balls dangling from the ceiling.

And in the center, you find a being that is half-spider, half-human, all-working.

Arachne does not pause in its tasks as you approach, its four arms humanoid arms manipulating threads into a form that resembles Kanoko's while standing on its four spider-like legs. Currently, it is working on the head, specifically the fine facial details. "Oh, it's you. Have you come to witness the great me work? It's bad luck to witness art in progress, but I guess you wouldn't know that, heheheheheh."

You ask what the Witch is doing.

"Oh this? It's a little project. I want to have it ready for when I inevitably seize full control of this failure of a girl's soul. After all, it'd be a nuisance if those other magical girls figured out what happened, so I'll need a human disguise. …This requires my full attention. You will need to leave me be. Besides, that foolish girl is calling for you now. Try not to let her die before I'm ready, okay?"

Confused, you depart Arachne's portion of the soul and tune back into your surroundings. It looks like class is over now and she's wandering in the halls. She breathes a sigh of relief when she can sense you again. Unbeknownst to you, the two of you have caught the eye of a purple-haired girl, stalking Kanoko from a distance.

"Glad you're back… you're going to help me now, right?"

You agree, and ask what you'll be doing. You are still just a soul without a body, after all.

"Just tell me what you think about some of the designs I came up with in that inspired state. I can just sneak into the Art Club and re-draw them… ah, here it is."

Sure enough, the door is unlocked. Art supplies are littered everywhere in the big room. Half the space is fully open; the other half is dominated by two long tables. Kanoko grabs an easel and several colored pencils and gets to drawing. She's totally focused, only stopping to ask you questions about what you think.

…You now nothing about art though.

(Roll result: 2 on a d20)

Despite your best efforts, you're essentially useless to her.

You apologize, but it doesn't help. The balance of power in their soul has shifted in favor of Arachne instead of being split evenly. You can hear the Witch laughing in ecstatic glee and muttering something about how 'soon her soul will be mine!' before it goes back to its work.

Luckily for you, another girl walks in and saves you.

"Kanoko? So, this is where you are! …Kanoko? …Hey, don't just ignore me, the beautiful Ria Ami!"

Kanoko finishes her drawing, rips it off the easel, and only then notices that Ria has entered the room. Ria is blonde like Emiri, but her eyes are blue instead of red. Instinctively, you search for her soul, and sure enough, it's not in her body. It's localized on her person in what looks like a ring.

Yet another magical girl.

"Eh, Ria? What are you doing here?" Kanoko asks.

Ria pouts, and wags her finger at Kanoko. "Looking for you! Honestly! You need to pay more attention to your surroundings! Rumors are spreading that you're hiding something hideous beneath that white mask. It would not do for you to become one of those dreadful Uwasa before you complete the beautiful Metal Clothing you were designing for the beautiful me. So, what's going on with you?"

"Well, the designs are almost done, and-"

Ria interjects. "No! Wrong! I'm asking about you, not your fashion!"

Kanoko stares at Ria in confusion for a moment. "I'm… fine?"

"Well, you don't look fine! Your entire face is pale and… eh? Did I say something wrong?"

You can feel Kanoko's panic. She runs to the nearest mirror and not only her face, but also her entire body is one or two shades closer to chitinous white than it was before. She manages to resist the urge to scream again, and takes a deep breath instead. She mutters to herself. "I won't give up on my dream… I won't give up on my dream… I won't give up on my dream…"

There's suddenly a hand on Kanoko's back. It's Ria's. "Ummm… I don't know what's going on, but I agree! You shouldn't give up! If the beautiful me will not surrender to anyone, not even my rival Yachiyo who I hope to find and defeat soon, then you shouldn't surrender to whatever curse has befallen you either!"

Between her own chants, Ria's encouragement, and some secret support from you, Kanoko recovers a bit. She doesn't give Ria the full details, but explains that it was caused by a Witch, not an Uwasa.

…which reminds you that you don't actually know what an Uwasa is, exactly. You'll have to ask later.

"I see!" Ria exclaims. "So it has disfigured your face and now your body. How unfortunate! You aren't as beautiful as me, of course, but you have your own charms. If I can assist you in any way, don't hesitate to reach out. You have my number, right?"

Kanoko does. She changes the subject by asking about this missing 'Yachiyo' person. According to Ria, the so-called 'Wings of Magius' are responsible for her vanishing, but do not admit guilt or divulge information. So her team of herself and a few other magical girls has been at an impasse for a while.

Kanoko offers to help, but Ria insists that Kanoko take care of herself first.

…Speaking of which, Kanoko's stomach choses that moment to growl.

A grumpy Ria forces Kanoko to spend the rest of lunch eating with her and three of her other friends. They bid Kanoko a supportive farewell as she returns to class alone.

You then return to your soul investigations, but this time you turn inwards and look into yourself.

…You find yourself in a place you don't recognize. You're in a foggy swamp. Mushrooms are plentiful and grow out of the ground and the trees. You can hear only your own breathing and heartbeat.

You look down at your hands.

They're not the same as Kanoko's. The skin tone is much darker and browner.

Excitement surges through you. You immediately rush to the nearest body of water and look into it. Is this your body? Is this your face? You peer into the swampy depths and see…

…deep black eyes and long unkempt black hair framing the face of the human sacrifice you saw in your visions. It's not your face and body; it's a copy of hers… whoever she was. Still, it's something.

You get up and wander around for some time. The swamp is dead yet peaceful in its stillness.

Eventually, you come across a large clearing and find yourself at the shore of a large lake. The fog is not so dense here. You can see an island in the center of the lake, and upon that island is a stone step pyramid. At the top-most platform is the chained and barricaded door. It leads nowhere yet something is behind it. Or rather, inside it. Emanating from it, you can feel connections to Kanoko… to Arachne…

…and one more!?

(Roll result: 15 on a d20)

You can't precisely tell where the person is, but you can pin them down to somewhere in Kamihama. By your estimate they're either close by in Mizuna ward or by its borders in a nearby ward. You also get a name: Xochitl. You wonder if this the same person as Rosa. Maybe one of the names is fake?

You immediately alert Kanoko of your finding. Arachne also pauses in her work, suddenly interested in this development. But the human girl in class and can't leave yet, even though she's not paying any attention to the English lesson.

The Witch chuckles menacingly. "Don't worry, I can fix that."

Before you can ask it to clarify what it meant by that, it sends a sudden jolt through Kanoko's soul, and she falls out of her seat, clutching her head in pain. The purple-haired girl frowns as you all depart.

She's excused from the rest of her classes, but you can't help but think there was a better method that could have been used. She shows the truant officer her note as she leaves the school grounds.

"Now what?" she asks, still holding one hand to her head. "Emiri is still in school."

"Now… sit back and watch!" exclaims the Witch.

You can feel magic churning in their conjoined soul. Kanoko ducks into a nearby alley so she can't be seen. She pulls out the Soul Gem and Grief Seed hybrid. Black and white threads spew forth from it, coalescing into the form of another Kanoko. You feel a tug, and you're pulled into that other body.

You blink in surprise.

"Not bad, right? It's not done yet, but it'll work for now…" speaks Arachne from the new body. Kanoko is staring at you in shock. She pulls her mask off, but her face hasn't changed from its altered state. She notes that you're wearing her magical girl outfit, but all the blacks are greys. Similarly, the eyes and hair are greyed out on the right side of the body. On the left side, the eye is red and the hair is white.

You speak. It sounds like Kanoko's voice, but flattened and in a monotone. "We will search for this girl who is entangled with my soul. Perhaps she is Rosa or perhaps not. Either way, I must make sure that she ends up under my protection. Kanoko, will you please go on to meet with Emiri as we planned?"

Still a bit stunned, she agrees and walks back into public view, mask back on.

In the hidden alleyways, you and Arachne move in search of the unknown girl.

Chapter 3: Triunity
Episode 1

You're not sure how long you've been searching and you're not sure where exactly you are.

You keep hidden and stay out of sight by running in the alleyways and upon rooftops. This is done not for yourself, but for Kanoko and Arachne, whose body your are sharing for now.

But not forever, you hope.

The girl who you are looking for, the soul you are tracking. It's in motion.

(Roll result: 20 on a d20)

She's stopped in a building not too far from you. This is your chance!

You hop down from your perch and dash through streets which are becoming emptier and emptier. You feel a sense of menace emanating from the same place you're heading towards. With no active force, it suggests to these ordinary people to stay away. Not to impede lest they suffer its wrath.

You ignore it and march on.

(Roll result: 3 on a d20)

In your eagerness to discover who the missing link is, you don't notice your assailant until she's almost right on top of you.

She shouts as she lunges at you from around the corner of a building you just passed. You're slashed at with a sword (cutlass) by a girl wearing a frilly blue shirt with a white X emblazoned on it and white cuffs and shoulder-pads, loose blue pants, and a cylindrical blue hat attached to her head by a white strap.

You can see the fierce determination in the girl's black eyes as she easily slashes open your front.

If you were a normal human, this would have killed you.

Fortunately, this body is only assembled threads. Yes, it's still painful – if anything it's more painful than your sudden and quick death long ago – but you'll live. Arachne reels the threads back in.

Instinctively, you summon a weapon – another sword (rapier). It must be Kanoko's.

The girl is standing directly in front of you and staring at you in horror. She starts backing away.

"What… what are you!?" she exclaims. "Ariel told us to keep a look out for other magical girls, not… whatever you are!"

You note that she's speaking English, not Japanese as Kanoko and Arachne do. Her soul is localized in a gem embedded into a patch in the center of her hat and…

…wait, did she say something about… 'us'?

(Roll result: 7 on a d20)

In your weakened state, you're only barely able to dodge an attack from behind, falling onto the ground as you do so. It's a red pulse of energy, a pressure wave. The other girl also dodges it, but much more gracefully. The wave crashes into a building and heavily damages it. As you stand, you hear a squeak coming from the same direction as the attack and turn and look that way.

You see another girl. She's wearing tight and sparkling red shirt with her midriff exposed. Her pants are loose, but just as shiny and red. She also has black eyes. She's holding something you don't recognize. Arachne tells you it's something called a microphone and stand, meant to make voices louder.

Now that you think about it, the two of them look quite similar – black eyes, black hair, fair skin, faces the resemble each other. The one in blue just happens to be quite a bit taller than the other one.

The blue girl approaches the red one. "I'm okay, Isabelle! It's alright. Let's fight together now."

The red girl nods but does not speak. Her soul is localized inside an earring on her right ear.

The blue girl speaks again, cutlass raised and on guard. "My name is Tatiana. Who and what are you!?"

Hm. You could answer and attempt to convince them to get out of your way. On the other hand, Arachne is eager for a fight and they did just try to kill you.

The girl you are tracking has started to move and the menacing presence is following it.

You just want them to get out of your way. Now.

[X] Run.
-[X] dodge the girls' attacks (if they attack), and sprint to the girl you were tracking
-[X] get the girl you were tracking out of danger first, then deal with everyone else

The way out is through. Time for a tactical retreat.

Without saying a single word, you turn to your left and bolt in the direction of the presence you're tracking. Arachne grumbles a bit about not getting to fight…

…but changes its tune once it notices the blue girl pursuing you, demanding that you stop and explain yourself. The red girl looks surprised, but doesn't move.

You don't have time for this!

"Hehehehe… I'll handle this. Stay focused and pay no attention to me!" Arachne exclaims.

You can feel your body shifting, the magic churning. Arachne cedes control of her eye to you, and you can see… no. You follow her advice and tune out her doings. You're aware of two pairs of eyes… four arms… a torso and head… all protruding from your back, made from threads dominated by Arachne's malevolent will. You pass the rapier over to one of Arachne's arms…

...and she easily blocks the blue girl's attack. With her other arms, she…

"Hey! Put me down! Grrrr… take this!"

… tries to pick up the girl, but she cuts herself free, and also cuts off two of Arachne's arms.

You wince, but don't stop moving.

Arachne laughs, regrows her arms, and compels her lost arms to explode into fine threads. She also spits up a large ball of what resembles spider silk. Tatiana easily dodges the ranged attacks…

…leaving Arachne's true target, Isabelle, completely exposed.

They're out of your line of sight before you see what happens next. But the blue girl has stopped pursuing you, so you'll take it and leave. Arachne dispels the extra mass, but returns not to her usual place. She instead creates three sets of red eyes surrounding yours.

"Ah, what was that red girl's name? Isabelle? She's a bit tied up right now, and it looks like Tatiana won't abandon her. The way forward is clear… you owe the great me for this assistance, by the way. I need something to eat…" Arachne notes. You're not so sure about that 'great' part, but you're grateful.

The two of you continue on.

You swiftly reach the building where you sense 'Xochitl' is residing, where you can see a crowd of people surrounding the outside of it and hear alarms going off inside. Both her and the one you assume to be 'Ariel' are wandering around inside the building.

You avoid the crowd, find a side entrance, and sneak in.

By your reckoning, she's not that far from where you are. Ariel is closer to the top of the building. You run up a flight of stairs and open the first door you see…

...and a girl who looks just like the one you saw in your soul bowls into you, knocking you both back down the stairs. She lands on top of you, uninjured. You, however, are in a lot of pain again. You can feel magic shifting, threads repairing themselves. The back of your head and your legs are fixing themselves.

You immediately cover her mouth to prevent her from screaming.

You whisper: "Are you the one called Xochitl?"

She looks at you in shock. You take your hand off her mouth.

"How did you-!?" She adjusts her volume down. "Who are you? How did you know my real name?"

You frown. "I was hoping you could tell me who I am… Our souls are connected."

She gasps. "So then you're the one we were going to summon! It really does work! But wait…" Her excited expression dissipates. "You don't look like how you're supposed to… that's strange…"

She falls silent, as if listening for something.

When she hears nothing, she continues: "Call me Rosa. I can explain more, but we need to get away from here. Can you walk yet?"

Arachne then chooses that moment to speak up. "So, you're the one I properly owe my awakening to? As a thanks, I'll speed this up." You instantly feel restored, and stand up. "Now let's get going!"

You and Rosa dash out the nearest exit into an alleyway. No one's near. The two magical girls who attacked you are nearby, but are going the wrong way. The one above hasn't noticed you yet either.

You can move much faster than a normal human. As such, you offer Rosa your back, and dash away with her in tow. You're pretty sure you can escape without drawing notice… but where to go now?

(Choose only one.)
[] There's safety in numbers. Return to the school and gather your allies.
[] Kanoko should have located Emiri by now. Head to the Shinsei ward.

Winning vote:
[X] There's safety in numbers. Return to the school and gather your allies.

Mizuna Girl's School. Home to multiple magical girls. Kanoko won't be there right now, but you think her friends should be. They talked quite a bit about how they defend people from threats like Witches over lunch. Well, these new Magical Girls are a threat to you and Rosa, so maybe they'll help you with this.

As you dash away, explaining your plan to Rosa, you notice the hostile presence move in your direction. She must have noticed you! You move even faster and depart before she can get out of the building.

"And you're sure these girls will help you?" Rosa asks.

"The friends of my current host should be willing to come to our aid," you claim.

"And if they don't want to, we'll make them!" exclaims Arachne.

Your half of the body frowns while Arachne continues to laugh. Rosa looks down at you in confusion. "How long have you been like this, spirit? And how did you awaken? We thought you could only be awakened by doing the ritual and fusing your soul with that of a willing human sacrifice."

You explain what happened with Kanoko eating the mushroom you were contained in and you waking up in her body several days later.

Rosa looks surprised. "Eh?"

Then comprehension dawns on her face. "Oh!"

You ask her what she's realized.

"Oh, nothing that helps you, sorry. I think I figured out why some of the prior attempts failed, that's all. Did Kanoko happen to have intense visions after eating that mushroom?"

Arachne speaks up. "Yes! She and I were seeing things that we've never seen before. It was quite helpful for both for her and her art. Even I can admit it that it enhanced my already great ability."

"I see! But how are you related to Kanoko, Miss…?"

"Arachne, the Witch of Woven Threads."

You can feel Rosa's panic through her body. "A Witch!?"

Arachne laughs. "Relax, I have no desire to eat you. I'm too curious to see where this mystery leads and grateful for your actions leading to my birth. Besides, your nameless friend here owes me one."

Rosa doesn't feel reassured. You confirm to her that Arachne has been relatively cooperative, and she relaxes just a bit. Now you're wondering what Witches are normally like… but that can wait for later.

You tell Rosa about the vision you had in your soul and your flashbacks of the moment of your death.

She adds commentary.

The person you saw in your vision was her ancestor, who she is named after. 'Rosa' is a name she often goes by. She's not sure what the swamp means (maybe it's a location you were familiar with?) but the top of the pyramid is where the sacrifice would have been done. The Incubators (or Kyubey, as they are called individually) now roam freely around her home country of Mexico in the more urbanized areas.

They did not arrive until the Spanish did. There are legends about old spirits like yourself preventing them from arriving in the far distant past, as they foresaw that a great calamity would be brought about by their entry into their territory. Once they did, spirits like yourself were killed when discovered by them. Only a few managed to be saved, and you were among them – in your case with a seal.

It's the same case for nature spirits all over the world, which is how Shinko, a spirit herself, connected with Rosa's family, your caretakers. Shinko offered to help in whatever way she could. So, when hostile Magical Girls under Kyubey's command found out about Rosa, she fled to Japan to be in Shinko's care.

By the time she's done with this commentary, you've almost arrived at the school. There are tears freely flowing down your eyes when you hear about the deaths of the other spirits. Even though you don't remember them, you still feel like you've lost something. There's also rage churning in your soul, along with a slight bit of curiosity at the idea of other spirits surviving.

(Choose one to orient yourself.)
[] [Mood] You want revenge on the Incubators.

Your introspection is interrupted by your sudden detection of a hostile presence.

You let Rosa down. The two of you are standing in an open field within the school grounds. Arachne is on guard as well. What could it be…?

(Roll result: 3 on a d20)

Your body is suddenly perforated in various places as if arrows have pierced through you. You're too stunned to react, and you fall over in great pain. Rosa stumbles away from you in shock and screams.

"Fear not, young girl!" a familiar voice exclaims. "I, the beautiful Ria Ami, will save you!"

Your eyes were not destroyed. You can see Ria in what must be her magical girl attire, flickering into visibility. Mayu and Manaka, two of her friends, peer out from behind some trees and rush to the side of their friend. They transform as well. Do they believe you are suddenly an enemy of theirs?

Meanwhile, Rosa ignores Ria and goes over to check on you. Arachne is already weaving your shared body back together. Perhaps they believe their friend has been possessed by one of those Witches they dread so much. Your combined aura must reek more of Witch than Nature Spirit by their reckoning!

In fact, you can sense…

…!

You pull something out of your hair. It's a red feather, made out of magic. Ria's magic.

She gasps. "I thought I made that invisible! You must have some sort of sensory magic, then." She grits her teeth and points her bow at you, an arrow readied. "Even so, I'll rid the Earth of you!"

Seeing Ria like this jolts your memory. The archer. Your murderer. His eyes were dull, the opposite of Ria's. By his side, in unfamiliar dress, was a girl with a staff in hand, declaring orders. At her feet, Kyubey. The girl shouts and an arrow was fired. Your old host, the former Xochitl, was slain. Your vision cuts off.

Ria shouts and fires an arrow. Instinctively, you summon a weapon and block the attack.

But in your hand is not Kanoko's rapier.
