12,000 years in the future, in a world where mammals are mostly extinct and sea creatures have replaced them on land, the Inkling sibling duo Artemis and Orion (also known as Agents 5 & 6 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon), find a human laboratory being dug up by the Octarians in Octo Canyon. They are not remotely prepared for what they find.

Waking to a world he does not recognize, and a future without humanity, the robot known as 'X' has to find his own place in this new world, on top of finding himself already thrown into conflict.

Inky Future is a crossover fic between Mega Man X and Splatoon, with a scenario where humankind accidentally blew themselves up long before Dr. Cain ever was able to find X and create Reploids, and X is awoken by Inklings instead. Things get, well, interesting as a result.

While I'm in the midst of doing a bit of revamping of Henshin Sisters and its opening chapter(s), I ended up getting back into Splatoon and found myself coming up with a weird idea. What if Mega Man X was activated way, way behind schedule and found himself in the future that is Aku Splatoon?

This is probably gonna be a relatively short fic with only a few arcs, and perhaps not particularly polished, but I felt like this was something I could actually finish for once. Due to the circumstances there won't be any Reploids, but certain Mega Man characters might appear in forms and ways you might not expect. Also, there's gonna be quite a few original characters specific to the Splatoon-verse as well.

Prologue

Artemis (aka "Agent 5") kicked open what remained of the steel door with as much force as she could muster. She grinned as she hopped through, throwing caution to the wind as she shone her Hero Shot-mounted flashlight around.

"Sis, slow down! It might be dangerous!" That was the voice of her younger brother, Orion, also known as Agent 6.

"Relax, we got rid of the Octarians here," Artemis said as she looked at the abandoned lab around her.

"I'm less worried about the Octarians and more about ancient security systems. Proceed with caution, Agents," spoke their handler - Marie of the Squid Sisters, also known as Agent 2 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon. "This isn't an Octarian facility… Maybe it's… Nevermind, that's only speculation for now."

Only days ago had Artemis spotted Marie in Inkopolis Square and chased her into a sewer grate, starstruck, towing poor Orion with her. Next thing they knew, they had found themselves recruited into the New Squidbeak Splatoon and started liberating Zapfish from the clutches of the Octarians.

Sure, after a few close shaves the reality of the fact that they were fighting a war where they could die had sunken in, but despite Marie offering to let them back out, they were resolute to finish what they started.

Right now, they had found an Octarian dig site, and had splatted or chased off all the Octarians, including multiple Ocotoling troopers, which Marie was convinced meant this site was important.

Artemis coughed, shaking her head as she continued to look around, as her footsteps kicked up dust into the air around her. "Ugh, this place is so dusty…"

"Agent 5, look!" Orion said, trembling as he shone his flashlight at something that had spooked him.

Artemis looked, and her eyes widened as she saw the light expose some kind of large stasis capsule of some kind. A person was inside of it. She looked around the walls for some kind of light switch, and saw a button on the wall, which she pressed. "Shot in the dark, but maybe…"

Much to her own surprise, the room lit up. "Oh, cool, there's still some power in this place…"

Orion stepped up to the capsule, wiping dust away. "Agent 2, you seeing this?"

"This is… Agents, don't activate anything. I'm coming down to your position, sit tight," Marie said.

As much as this piqued Artemis' curiosity, she decided to keep her hands to herself, looking over the capsule. The person inside wore some kind of fancy blue armour, but he didn't look like an Inkling or Octarian. Is he asleep, or…?

Marie soon arrived, still wearing that kimono of hers, but having put on a bit of agent gear over it in a hurry, along with her own Hero Charger. "Good work securing the area. Now, let's see…"

She looked at the interface of the capsule itself, before pressing a button. A holographic image of an old man, certainly not of any species Artemis had seen before, appeared in front of the interface. "This is a warning message for anyone who would activate this capsule. My name is Dr. Thomas Light. I am a researcher of robotics, and inside this capsule is perhaps my magnum opus, the robot I call 'X'."

"So this is from the human period after all…" Marie muttered, something Artemis barely heard. "Wait… If that's true, then why is the message in Inkling language…?"

"'X' is the first of a new generation of robots which contain an innovative new feature - the ability to truly think, feel and make their own decisions by their own free will, completely unrestrained by the boundaries of programming. X, using his conscience, can think, worry and act on his own accord. This means he is also imbued with the same materials necessary to facilitate the evolution of robots in the same manner as life. However, there are great risks to this innovation. If X were to choose to become a threat to the world, to willingly violate the first rule of robotics - 'A robot must never harm a human being' - the results would be disastrous, and I fear that no force on Earth could stop him. To that end, I have sealed X away in this stasis capsule for thirty years to run continuous ethical tests on his AI, to ensure his maturity and that he has the proper conscience to act ethically in a complex society." The hologram started coughing, speaking volumes of the old man's health.

"Ugh, my head, so much technobabble!" Artemis groaned.

"Artemis, it's not that hard to understand…" Orion said. "But this is so cool… A real, thinking robot!"

The message continued. "If you are hearing this message, then the tests were successful and he is free to be released. I unfortunately am running out of time as of this recording, and have no one to continue my work. 'X' possesses great risks as well as great possibilities. I do not know when exactly X will be released, whether it be on schedule or in some far-flung future, but I hope he will fight valiantly to achieve peace for all people. Yes... I firmly believe that this will come to pass. But, I am not without worry. I fear that X will be swept up in the war we call "progress". I urge the people of the future to remember that X is my... The world's hope."

The message then faded out, leaving the three stunned silent.

"Marie… Who was that? I mean, he said his name, but that wasn't an Inkling or Octarian," Artemis said.

"That was a human," Orion said. "We learned about them in school, remember?"

Marie nodded, "humans went extinct roughly 12,000 years ago due to rising sea levels and an apocalyptic war, at least, that's the current consensus on the matter. Historians thought all the robots humans had were destroyed, to think we actually found possibly their most advanced robotic creation intact…"

Orion turned to Marie. "What do we do? I know he said the AI passed the tests, but…"

"It's an actual robot, bro! It would be a huge shame if we just kept him in storage! It just… Seems so sad, after everything," Artemis said.

"I think it's for the best that we activate 'X'," Marie said, pressing a different, red button. "The Octarians were digging up this laboratory. They would want to turn X into a weapon, and we can't let that happen. If that turns out to be a mistake… We'll take responsibility for that ourselves."

As the capsule began to hiss, Artemis could only hope that X would be a friend, rather than a foe…

Chapter One

X's eyes fluttered open as his systems booted for the first time in over ten thousand years. The disparity between the apparent date in his systems and the rough estimate of his intended awakening was alarming, but who or what had awoken him instead inspired curiosity.

Standing in front of the capsule, looking at him with curiosity, were three figures - they looked human at first glance, but X's visual scanning systems and the naked eye immediately made him recognise they had biological traits akin to cephalopods. And yet they clearly resembled humans in so many ways.

"You're 'X', correct?" the oldest-looking female asked, in a language that X realized that only been added to his databanks relatively recently. She had white 'hair', orange eyes and a distinct kimono under what looked like body armour and other equipment. "I'm sorry if this is disconcerting or disorienting for you. We mean you no harm, we felt it was best to wake you up after we found you. I regret to inform you that the species that created you, humans, is to our knowledge extinct, and has been for thousands of years."

"Oh," X said, speaking a word in the… 'Inkling' language, was it? That's what this person was speaking, at least. "That's a lot to take in. You three are…?"

"Hey, I'm Artemis! And this is my baby brother, Orion!" The other female grinned, putting an arm around the male's shoulders. Artemis and Orion both had blue eyes, with Artemis having short 'hair' and Orion's being slicked back. They both wore yellow gear and rather stylish headsets. "We're Agents 5 and 6 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, nice to meet ya!"

'Splatoon'? Was that some kind of wordplay? X tossed the thought aside for the moment as the first female cleared her throat. "I'm Marie, Agent 2 and their handler until Captain Cuttlefish returns. We found this lab in an Octarian dig site, chased off the enemy before they could break in and take you, likely to use as a weapon."

X froze up as he was about to get out of the capsule. "Are… Are we in the middle of a war?"

"I wouldn't call it a 'war', honestly," Marie sighed. "There was a Great Turf War a hundred years ago, but that's mostly in the past. The Octarians are mostly acting like terrorists now - they squidnapped the Great Zapfish from Inkopolis Square, which is powering the city, and we're fighting to get it back before they can use it for their nefarious goals. We're not asking you to get involved, we know it's not your fight. The Octarians wouldn't have given you the same courtesy."

"I'll be the judge of that for myself, but thanks," X said, fully getting out of the stasis capsule. "All systems operating as expected… The capsule did a good job of keeping my body preserved."

Artemis was grinning like a loon as she circled X, looking at him from head to toe. "That armour looks so cool! And the skin and the eyes look so lifelike!" She then reached up and pinched his chin. "Weird texture, though."

"H-Hey! Watch it, please…" X couldn't help but find something endearing about her, however.

"Give him some personal space, sis… Sorry, she can get like this a lot," Orion said. "But if you really are like a human…"

"As close as human technology could get before they got wiped out, I guess," X said, taking off his helmet to show a clean head of artificial brown hair.

"WOW! That's so fuzzy! No tentacles or anything!" Artemis grinned, reaching up to feel his hair, but quickly stopped. "Ehehe… Sorry."

X put his helmet back on, slightly annoyed but willing to give the squid girl a pass. Actually, that reminded him… "So… You're evolved squids or something?"

"Inklings, yes. I think it's best to take this conversation outside - it's best to show you around Octo Canyon," Marie said, turning to leave.

X and the two junior agents followed her into the sunlight, as X wondered what kind of world awaited beyond the lab…

❖

"…so we spotted the dig site from Slimeskin Garrison, and I was like 'I wonder what the Octarians are doin' down there?' so we went down, splatted them all and found you!" Artemis grinned as they arrived at the agents' home base at the highest level in Octo Canyon, which they called 'Tentakeel Outpost'. "Marie was fussing about getting back to the main mission, but I think we made the right call."

"So all of these floating 'islands' were made by the Octarians?" X asked, as they settled down at Marie's cabin. Getting up here was fairly easy since X could teleport - without teleportation shielding around, X could go basically anywhere. It turns out some old orbital teleportation satellites were still up and running using solar power, and they were built to last. He was more amazed by how the Inklings could 'super-jump' instead.

"Yes, and yes. Octarians are hard-working, and they have incredible technology," Marie nodded.

"Yeah, it is kinda crazy and cool," Artemis agreed. "It sucks that we have to fight, it would be cool if we could share technology and culture and stuff!"

"And are you guys using… Water guns?" X asked, looking at their weapons.

"Inklings and Octarians alike can produce a lot of ink in a short amount of time. More often now we use it for sport, but either way, our ink is just as much a weapon as it is an asset," Marie explained, taking off her agent gear, fully revealing her rather lovely kimono, and she opened up an umbrella.

X looked out over the edge of the platform, seeing the city in the distance, along with the ocean around the canyon. The formation of the canyon and the tentacle-shaped rocks all over the canyon only hit home further that this wasn't the world he was meant to wake up in.

"I know all of this is probably overwhelming for you. A quiet place like this with a nice view might help," Marie said. "Take as much time as you need to process."

"We can talk later, and maybe even show you around Inkopolis Square. Little Bro and I gotta go clear out the rest of Slimeskin Garrison. The Great Octoweapon ain't gonna blow itself up!" Artemis grinned, super-jumping away, "seeya!"

"Um… Bye!" Orion followed suit.

"We can monitor them from here." Marie said, pointing to some nearby screens by the shack. "I do worry for those kids, though. They're pretty skilled, and they've got good hearts, but…"

"You're worried they'll slip up and get themselves killed?" X said, turning to her.

"There's not a high chance of that happening with respawn points around, but… Yeah, I am," Marie said, sitting down at a chair, monitoring the incoming live feeds. "The New Squidbeak Splatoon is a semi-clandestine outfit. Gramps fought the Great Turf War a hundred years ago and brought about the peace Inklings enjoy today - if we don't succeed here, another war is going to start all over again. And I'm not sure Inkling society is ready for that."

X said nothing, coming over to the shack, noticing a pile of old files in the shade. He started going through them, noticing that Marie didn't seem to mind, and she was more preoccupied with overseeing the operations of the junior agents. He found an old binder of what looked like old papers, mainly collages of old newspapers and articles. One Octarian newspaper article stood out to him.

It specifically read: The Department of Energy has announced that further declines in the availability of electric power are likely to occur in the near future. With the underground domes also deteriorating rapidly, the future does not look bright.

He was about to ask Marie about this, but noticing she was busy, he decided to continue reading. He didn't think she was being dishonest with him, but rather that there was more complexity to this conflict. So he looked for files on the Great Turf War.

Still, his eyes were drawn to the conflict happening on the screen. The Octarians literally exploded with ink when defeated, which sent a shiver down his spine. "That seems… Rather gruesome."

Marie looked over her shoulder, blinking. "What?"

"The Octarians literally exploding when killed. How do you guys even handle that psychologically?" X asked.

That seemed to give Marie pause, but she smiled softly, turning back to the screens. "Oh, that? You've got the wrong idea, nobody's actually dying unless they, well, just fall over. Inklings and Octarians explode into ink when they're 'splatted', which means they'll just reform at the nearest spawn point they control. If that doesn't happen, something has gone horribly wrong."

"Then I guess you just keep capturing enemy spawn points to push them back," X said. "That makes some sense, I suppose."

"I understand if you're not comfortable with all of this. It's why I'm not asking you to help us," Marie said. "This isn't your fight. I'm not super comfortable with it either, and not exactly comfortable with asking a couple of kids to help save Inkopolis, but if I had other options…"

"I believe you, for now at least," X said. "I skimmed through the roster. Agent 1… Your cousin, Callie. Where is she?"

"I don't know. I'm worried the Octarians have kidnapped her," Marie said. "She went missing while I was away seeing my parents back at our hometown. When she didn't show up on her day off and she didn't pick up my calls, I cut my vacation short and went to find her, only to find that DJ Octavio was free from his prison and Callie was nowhere to be found. And before you ask, Gramps went on some expedition with Agents 3 & 4, and I can't contact them either."

Suddenly, Marie's eyes opened, speaking into her microphone. "Oh, no! Careful, you two! It's an ambush! Multiple Octolings and Octosnipers being dropped in behind you… This isn't good…"

X could see why she was so alarmed - the two agents were currently being pinned down by sniper fire and multiple bipedal Octarians closing in on them, with little room to escape. He noticed the on-screen coordinates. "I'm going in. They need my help."

Marie spun around in surprise, "wait, X, you don't have any weap-"

By the time she finished that sentence, X had already teleported out.

❖

X had successfully teleported just a meter away from the two junior agents, and immediately took stock of the situation while the pair gaped in surprise at his sudden arrival. His right hand changed into his X Buster immediately.

An 'Octoling' suddenly charged, Octo Shot raised, but X was quicker, firing off multiple quick buster shots that splatted her immediately.

They were stuck right in the middle of some kind of arena on multiple tall buildings. Pink and green ink was everywhere. There was some cover, but not a lot, especially against the snipers on either side.

"Cut a path through the way you were headed, you two. I'll handle the enemies behind you," X said, charging up his buster and firing off a charged shot, splatting a distant sniper.

Artemis' gleeful squeeing was cut short by something she heard in her ear, and she immediately nodded, splatting an incoming Octoling with her Hero Shot, while Orion used his Hero Charger to start taking out distant enemies. "Roger that! Thanks for the save!"

X focused on the way the siblings had come, firing off more shots at Octosnipers trying to take shots at all three of them. His X Buster easily outranged anything the Octarians had, fortunately, but the Octolings were able to take cover and hide in their own ink. And they had the high ground.

X immediately took off running, leaping at a wall and easily scaling it with multiple wall-jumps thanks to his internal air jets allowing him to redirect his movement in midair. When he landed on the platform above, a couple of Octolings emerged from the ink in front of him, one with a large paint roller and the other with a set of twin pistols. X splatted the one who tried to hit him with the roller, but he was forced to raise his arms as the second enemy dodged his shots and sprayed him with ink, right before he splatted her as well.

He took a moment to shake off the ink, and he noticed something disconcerting in his heads-up-display. Guess that's one way to find out pink isn't really my colour, he thought, but this ink can drain my energy at an alarming rate. Can't just dismiss this stuff as harmless, even if the effects are only temporary.

He noticed the two Octolings had outright disappeared, along with their clothes and equipment. Every splat has come with a brief signal that I detected… It resembles teleportation. I guess Inklings and Octarians stumbled upon old human technology and-no, focus X, you've got bigger fish to fry!

X immediately started scaling the buildings, deciding to lead the Octolings on a wild goose chase. The siblings were doing just fine by themselves now that a lot of the heat was off of them. While wall-jumping helped, he found that the ink on the walls was making it harder to maintain a proper grip, and just standing in ink slowly drained his energy. That was a problem.

Much to his surprise, however, when he reached the top, alongside the respawn point was a strange blue capsule, large enough for him to stand inside. It opened up, as if beckoning him to enter.

Somehow, it felt familiar enough for him to step inside. When he did, it closed, and his leg parts began changing. As enemy ink splattered the floor and area around the capsule, a familiar voice echoed in his head.

"If you've come across this capsule, I fear you must be in the midst of a difficult battle. I have left four powers for you to inherit. I believe that you will use them in the cause of justice. The first of these is the Foot Parts - they will give you the ability to dash and to run without issue on surfaces covered in allied ink. Use this power to steer the future in the right direction. I trust in you, my dear X."

With the familiar voice still in his mind, X charged his buster as the capsule opened, and performed a leaping dash, his leg parts replaced with gleaming white, blue and gold replacements.

The Octoling with the sniper weapon was the first to be splatted, too slow to shoot him out of the air. As he fell, X splatted another foe with a larger-barrelled weapon. As he landed on a platform below, he dashed to evade ink being sprayed by the Octolings with the roller and the bucket, who he blasted in quick succession.

The Octoling with the dual pistols landed nearby, and immediately moved in to strike at close range, rolling quickly in anticipation of incoming shots. X also was able to dash and evade her shots, however, and in the end, his shots hit their target before hers could.

All that was left was silence. X looked across the arena to check on the two agents, and to his relief, they were waving to him, having dealt with all opposition on their side, and shut down the enemy respawn point by removing their power sources - creatures that he realised were large yellow catfish, though half the size of the Inklings at most.

He simply smiled and waved to them, before teleporting out.

❖

X arrived back at the cabin, shaking off the remaining ink from his body. "Sorry to leave so suddenly, time was of the essence."

Marie was still sitting there, watching the live feed, and turned towards him. "Thank you. You just jumped in there without even being asked. I think they probably could've made it through that situation, but having you back them up really eased my worries."

X sat back down at the cabin. "As you said, they're good kids. I didn't want to see them, well, die, even if I'm not entirely sure what's going on."

"By the way, nice leg armour. What's the deal with that capsule?" Marie asked.

"I wish I knew, it was just there all of a sudden and I felt a comforting sense of deja-vu," X said. "I know, probably was a dumb idea to just walk into some capsule, but turns out it had leg upgrades. I… I think Dr. Light created multiple upgrade capsules for me, and the capsule automatically teleported to my location."

"Huh," Marie shrugged. "Probably should find the others, then. Could be helpful."

"You mentioned the leader of the Octarians was… A 'DJ Octavio', right?" X asked. "I'd like to meet with him. Understand his side of the story and where he's coming from… and maybe, I can figure out some kind of solution that can stop some kind of conflict."

"Oh, yes, I'm sure he'd love to meet you in person after that little stunt you pulled today," Marie said with a slight smirk, making X realize he may have made things harder for himself in that respect. "I'd love for it to be that easy, X, but if you want to meet Octavio, you gotta fight your way all the way to his lair at the bottom of the canyon."

X frowned, his metaphorical heart sinking as her words sank in. "Oh."

"For what it's worth, Octavio isn't a diplomat - he's a soldier. He's not gonna listen to you unless you make him cry uncle," Marie said, turning back to the screens. "Trust me, he and Gramps go way back. They used to be friends before the war."

"Well, if I have to, I guess I'll need to make him listen," X declared, clenching his fist.

Shortly after, the two junior agents returned, with eight of the catfish in tow. Orion saluted. "Agent 2, eight Mini-Zapfish recovered, safe and sound!"

"We might not've done it if it weren't for X! Like… THAT WAS THE COOLEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN!" Artemis grinned widely, zipping over to X as if she hadn't just been in an intense firefight. "You didn't tell us you had an arm cannon that shoots plasma!"

"Compressed solar energy, but that's semantics, I guess," X said, forming his buster. "I like to call it the 'X-Buster', but technically it's the Mega Buster Mark 17. I wonder, though… Artemis, can you show me your weapon?"

"Uh, sure," Artemis blinked, holding out her Hero Shot.

X put a hand on it, and his weapons systems proceeded to perform a full scan. Once the weapon data was added to his system, he pointed his buster away from the others and fired, converting weapon energy into ink that splattered across the ground. "I also have a variable weapons system that lets me copy weapons using a set number of weapon energy reserve batteries. I don't have an easy way to recharge it, though, unlike you guys."

X could guess at how Artemis felt about this, based on the delighted squealing coming from her mouth. Orion's jaw had simply dropped. Even Marie was staring with some visible curiosity.

He decided to change the subject. "Marie. How much time do we have until Inkopolis runs out of power?"

"Maybe another week," Marie said. "We could be going faster, but these two still need regular training, on top of their studies... It's the weekend, so we've got some extra time, but after that-"

"How much more ground is there to cover before we reach the enemy's HQ?" X asked.

"We've got just one more Octoweapon in the way before we've fully cleared Slimeskin Garrison," Orion spoke up. "I'm not sure if I want to face down that thing today, after what just happened, though…"

"Well, we'll do it together," X declared. "You two are skilled. I think you can do it by yourselves, but if this 'Octoweapon' is that dangerous, then you'll want me in your corner. We take it down, and then tomorrow we storm their HQ. I've made up my mind - I want to talk to Octavio, even if it means fighting my way through the entire Octarian army to do it."

"Now that's fresh!" Artemis grinned. "Sounds good to me! We'll have that Octoweapon blown to smithereens in no time!"

Orion gulped, but when X looked at him expectantly, he seemed to stop shaking. "Y-Yeah. I'm sure with your help, nothing can stop us!"

"That's the spirit," X smiled. "Let's go take it down!"

❖

"I honestly don't know what I actually expected," X said dryly, watching the Octo Shower explode into green ink, leaving behind a rather shaken but unharmed Zapfish.

"What did you expect?" Artemis remarked, as she picked up the Zapfish.

"I dunno, something less absurd than a giant shower head," X sighed, hands on his hips.

That had been easier than he had expected, almost comically so. Sheldon had requested that both siblings use Chargers for this fight, and to his credit, that had been a good idea, considering how the Octo Shower, carried in the air by multiple Octarian fliers, was content to mostly try to stay out of range as much as it could while it used its varied weaponry. It had not accounted for X's buster actually having much greater range, however, and between the three of them, the Octoweapon went down rather easily. Well, it was mostly X and Orion who did most of the work. It turned out Artemis was not very good with Chargers compared to her younger brother. Marie had muttered something about "she needs more practice at the range" during the fight.

That's when someone else spoke on the communications line. "RUN! LEAVE NOW AND NEVER LOOK BACK!" Much to X's bewilderment, he could swear the sound was inverted somehow.

"Uh… Are you holding the communicator upside down?" Marie asked, equally baffled if her tone was of any indication.

"Ugh, I totally was," groaned the unknown female voice.

Marie gasped. "CALLIE?!"

"What?!" X said. "You recognise her voice, Marie?!"

"Um... Nope, this is definitely not Callie! So just... Leave. It's dangerous here! And it's not safe at all!" 'Callie' declared.

"Ummmm... Don't those mean the same thing?" Marie asked.

"WHATEVER! JUST GET OUT OF HERE! I'm not calling again!" 'Callie' snapped, before going silent.

"W-wait! Don't go! CALLIE?! CALLIE!" Marie begged, desperation creeping into her voice.

X stared at the two junior agents, who looked back at him. It was clear all three of them had no idea what to make of this whatsoever.

"I… I can't believe it," Marie stammered, breaking the silence. "Could Callie really be working with the Octarians?"

X paused for a moment to think, before responding. "Marie… Does it really matter? You started this to get your cousin back. We'll just have to take the extra step of bringing her back to her senses."

"Y-You're right. Agents 5 & 6, X, I need your help now more than ever. Return to base immediately," Marie said.

X was now dreading what was to come the next day.

Chapter 2
Oh, Zero is gonna show up at some point. The Maverick Virus is probably gonna have relatively minimal impact on the story, though, considering it's designed to basically be Roboenza 2.0. (I'm also partial to Mega Man 8 Bit Deathmatch's take on Roboenza, which is basically more of a precursor to the Maverick Virus by having it be made from the Evil Energy from MM8, driving infected robots to murderous rampages.) But he will be a problem for X and our heroes when he does show up, until the original strain of the virus is purged from his systems (which Sigma did in the original timeline by punching Zero's head gem while Zero was in the middle of a freakout implied to be caused by one of Wily's contingency programs, which spread the virus but also corrupted the original strain in Zero beyond repair). It's implied that the Zero we know for most of the X and Zero series is actually his default personality and the reason he was an insane psycho at first was purely because of the virus and Wily's attempts at trying to set up control measures to compensate.

That being said, Zero isn't showing up in this arc. I've got something else lined up for what the Octarians find and try to use against our heroes, and it's a bit of a deep cut.

Also, if it wasn't obvious, Artemis and Orion are basically both in the role of the canonical Agent 4, with Artemis being closer to Agent 4's implied canonical personality (and also her typical fanwork personality). There were two "Agent 3s", one male and one female.

And yeah X has some work to do cleaning up messes left behind by humans, without a doubt.

Anyhoo here's Chapter 2. I already had it written up, but I need to make some tweaks. Same with Chapter 3 for the most part, though I want to do another pass with that one first.

Chapter 2

With night approaching and the agents worn out, it was decided to postpone a full assault on the enemy headquarters until the next morning.

Artemis and Orion went back to their dorm rooms at Inkopolis High. X had nowhere else to go, so he waited for Marie to return home to her apartment before he teleported right there.

"At least you won't need to sneak around Inkpolis if you can just teleport," Marie remarked, as she took off her shoes at the door. "Make yourself at home."

"Thank you," X said replied, as his eyes scanned the apartment. It was a simple two-bedroom place, with a nice kitchen and a TV with a big couch. Against the wall was a shelf of accolades and other items the Squid Sisters had collected during their combined careers. In the middle was a large photograph of Callie and Marie, together, in much happier times in the aftermath of their first Splatfest, if the label was of any indication.

"You want anything to eat? Actually, can you even eat?" Marie asked, going into her room to change into a more casual outfit.

"It's not necessary, but I do have simulated taste buds, and my 'stomach' is basically just an energy incinerator that converts food mass into energy," X replied, taking off his helmet. "If my 'stomach' can break it down, I can eat it… Assuming I can handle the taste, of course."

"Okay, good," Marie said, coming out with a simple shirt and shorts, putting on an apron as she went to the kitchen to cook. With his superhuman hearing, X could actually hear Marie muttering to herself. "Ugh, I really just want to make instant noodles, but with a guest here that's not an option…"

"You don't have to exert yourself if you don't want to, Marie," X said, a bit amused as he sat down on the couch, putting his helmet aside on the living room table. "I'm fine with eating whatever tonight."

That seemed to spook Marie a little, but after a brief pause, she responded, "instant noodles with a bit of fish fine with you?"

"That works for me, sure," X chuckled, turning on the TV and doing a bit of channel-surfing. He very quickly found himself watching Inkopolis News. Pearl and Marina certainly had an interesting dynamic, but he couldn't help but notice Marina was obviously an Octoling. "I thought Octolings didn't live in Inkling society."

"Oh, there's Octolings trickling into Inkopolis society ever since Agents 3 & 4 beat Octavio the first time and Callie and I exposed Octarian society to the Calamari Inkantation. I'm definitely sure Marina's one of those Octolings who defected, she's an absolutely precious girl," Marie said. X could practically hear her smile with that tone. "Maybe we can truly make peace with the Octarians over time. I just hope this latest conflict doesn't ruin all of that. Which makes what Callie's doing all the more baffling to me."

X looked back towards the kitchen. Marie was leaning against the kitchen counter, both hands on it and looking down at it. He got up, and started walking over, as she clenched her teeth. "I thought we were still on good terms. Sure, we've been doing our own things, and we haven't been seeing each other much at all lately, but…"

That, he could understand, even if he didn't know what it was like to have a cousin - Callie was important to her, and to find out all of a sudden that her best friend had apparently betrayed her? That was a bitter pill to swallow indeed.

X gently put his hands on her shoulders. "Marie. It's okay. We'll get her back, and find out what's going on. I swear."

Marie's body shuddered briefly in surprise. X noticed the tears dripping down onto the counter as she spoke, "why are you like this? We're strangers. You haven't even met Callie. You're in a completely alien world, and yet you still try to see the good in everyone and help people."

"Maybe it's the ethics testing I went through, even if I barely remember any of it. Or maybe it's the promise I made to Dr. Light before he sealed me away," X said, "but either way, I want to do right by everyone. I still don't know how I'm going to do that, but I guess the least I can do is show some compassion. Be a solid rock for others to hold onto, even in the middle of stormy seas."

"Maybe everyone needs someone like that in their lives," Marie smiled softly, wiping her tears away. "Thank you. You're right, I've come too far to fall apart like this now. If Callie has done something stupid I'll just give her a good firm smack and make her come back to her senses."

"That's the spirit," X chuckled.

"Oh, by the way…" Marie unlocked and handed him her phone. "Call those two kids and find how how they're doing, they're in the contacts list. You need to be their rock too, you know, I gotta focus on making dinner."

"Are you outsourcing parenting duties to me?" X asked, which got a laugh out of Marie as he navigated the contacts list. Indeed, both Artemis and Orion were listed.

Now, who to call first…

❖

Artemis sighed in relief as she crashed on her dorm's couch, stretching as she left her phone on the edge of the table absent-mindedly. She would take off her Hero Suit, but it was comfy enough and normal-looking enough that her dorm-mates mistook it for fashionable Turf War wear. Unfortunately that did have the side-effect of them pestering her about where they could buy their own, so she had to tell them it was a gift from a friend, which was, well, mostly true.

She was just getting settled in and pondering what to do about dinner when the phone suddenly started ringing, tumbling off the table. That spooked her enough to tumble off the couch as well, as she scrambled to grab the phone. The caller ID was Marie, so she answered. "Oh, hi, Marie!"

"Actually, it's X. Marie's making dinner and wanted me to check up on you and your brother," spoke the male voice on the other end.

"Oh, we're good! We're back at the dorms, figuring out what to eat and all that jazz," Artemis said, getting back on her feet. "My dorm-mates haven't come home yet, I didn't ask what they were doing today, too busy doing hero stuff."

"That's good to hear. If you don't mind me asking, why did you become an Agent?" X asked. "You should've known from the start you were getting into something dangerous."

"Maybe I did deep down, but… It just sounded like something so out of my wildest dreams that I couldn't help but leap right into it. I even dragged Orion into it even though he wasn't sure," Artemis sighed, as she began to check the fridge. "It was like something out a comic book or an anime or something, you know? The chance to be a hero, maybe be recognised for something big. By the time I realised that I wasn't gonna get any credit for any of my heroics, I was in way too deep to back out. Someone's gotta save Inkopolis and the Great Zapfish, after all. Might as well be me."

"Well, at least you're trying to do the right thing, so I don't blame you so much for not having the purest of motives," X noted, "I guess you've already had a couple of reality checks."

"Like you wouldn't believe. That ambush was just another one, I don't know what might've happened if you hadn't bailed us out, X," Artemis said. "Fighting for your life is scary. But so is a lot of other things, and I do regular Salmon Run shifts, so compared to that this agent work isn't quite so scary. What's scarier to me is the possibility that I might let everyone down. If we don't save the Great Zapfish in time…"

"Well, that's why we're hunkering down and doing it tomorrow," X said. "I have a lot of doubts myself. But I know that what the Octarians did is wrong, and someone needs to do something about it. You've all been so kind to me, so I felt it was only right to repay the favour. We'll resolve this, one way or another. I don't like fighting. But I hate the idea of what would happen if I just stand by and do nothing even more."

"Can't say I blame you," Artemis said, closing the fridge. "I think we'll get along pretty well. I hope you're making your creator proud, wherever he is now."

"Thanks, Artemis. We'll talk tomorrow back at the Canyon. Don't be late."

"Heh, I won't. Seeya, X." Artemis smiled, before hanging up.

She then turned towards the door and jumped on the spot in panic as she saw her two dorm-mates standing there. "GAH! Karlene, Hinata, don't scare me like that!"

"So. Care to explain who this 'X' person is and what you were talking about?" Karlene asked. She had green eyes, and a 'wave' hairstyle, along with long leggings, Squidfin Hook Cans, an Annaki Evolution Tee and Black Norimaki 750s. She held up a shopping bag, "we bought instant ramen, by the way."

"I-it's nothing! Just talking to a friend!" Artemis laughed sheepishly.

"Oh, Arti, you're an even worse liar than your brother!" Hinata giggled. She had purple eyes, a banger hairstyle, a Sennyu Bon Bon Beanie, a Gray Hoodie and Purple Sea Slugs. "We totally heard everything."

Artemis groaned, walking over to them, "alright, alright, I'll tell you everything, just… Please promise me you'll keep it a secret?"

"Sure, we all got our secrets, I ain't gonna casually blab yours," Karlene said.

"Deal! So, were you talking to your boyfriend~?" Hinata grinned. She tended to smile nearly all of the time, and often had her eyes closed.

"NO! X is definitely not my boyfriend! I've only known him for a day, for cod's sake," Artemis snapped in embarrassment. "Look, just… Sit down, this is gonna be a bit of a long story."

As Misaki made and then served the instant ramen, Artemis told the story of how she and her brother encountered Marie, and got recruited into the New Squidbeak Splatoon. She also told them about X, as well as how Callie was apparently now working for the enemy.

"Yikes, Callie must've taken that last Splatfest harder than anyone thought or somethin'," Karlene said, slurping some noodles. When she was done, she continued, "so, lemme get this straight. You and your brother got recruited by one of the Squid Sisters into becoming secret agents to fight against the Octarians, who haven't been seen by Inkling society as a whole in like a century, but who have stolen the Great Zapfish twice now? And you also discovered an ancient human laboratory with a fully working robot?"

"That's the gist of it, yeah," Artemis sighed.

"Oh, so that's what you've been up to this past week or so! We thought it was so weird that your schedule became so packed! You must've been training and going on missions, so cool!" Hinata grinned widely. "You could've told us, we totally would've understood!"

"Well, it's gonna be all over tomorrow," Artemis said, "Marie and X agreed that to make sure we succeed before Inkpolis runs out of power, we're storming the enemy's HQ tomorrow."

"What, just the four of you?" Karlene raised an eyebrow.

Artemis shook her head. "Three, Marie's going to be on operator duty. I wish she could come, her Charger skills are-"

"Oh, no. Like heck you're going right into enemy HQ without a full fireteam, at least," Karlene said. "You've got a full weapons armory, right? We're coming with you."

"Wait, both of you?!" Artemis froze. "Hinata, you're not seriously agreeing with her, right?"

"It'd sure be an adventure," Hinata giggled. "We're teammates, we're not gonna just let you waltz right into danger without us at your back!"

Karlene crossed her arms and nodded. "I wouldn't forgive myself if I knew my friend was risking her life and I didn't help try to make sure she walks away in one piece. On top of all that, it'd be pretty irresponsible to not help out with getting the Great Zapfish back. Also, I'm the team leader, so…"

"Marie's not going to be happy about this, but… Yeah, you're right. Strength in numbers, after all. We need to work as a team," Artemis nodded. "Thank you. You're putting your lives on the line to help me."

"Hey, that's what friends do, right?" Hinata nodded.

"Right, tomorrow morning we're gonna do brief practice for our coordination, and then we push into enemy territory," Karlene said. "We are all in agreement?"

"Yes, ma'am!" Artemis and Hinata nodded.

❖

Orion had arrived at his dorm to find that his dorm-mates and Turf War teammates, Liam and Koji, were already home and working on dinner.

Orion jumped a bit when his phone began ringing, and he rushed outside to the corridor to answer the phone once he saw it was Marie. "Oh, Marie, what's up?"

"Hey, Orion, it's X. Marie's cooking dinner," X said. "Artemis said you two got home just fine."

"Oh, yeah, sure," Orion said, calming down and keeping his voice just hushed enough that nobody could overhear him. He was still a bit overwhelmed by the fact that X was a genuine robot from the pre-Mollusc era, but on the other hand, X was just so friendly that it was hard to be intimidated by him. "My roommates are already home and cooking. They're still wondering about where I'm going on my free time, it's hard to juggle saving Inkopolis with studies and being in a Turf War team."

"Turf War is really popular, huh? I mean, I have no complaints if it's safe and if people are having fun…"

"Really popular? Almost every Inkling plays Turf War at least on a semi-regular basis, it's the biggest sport, like, ever," Orion replied, "it's a good way to make a little bit of extra money. Sis and I don't have full teams at the moment, but we've been making do."

"A little bit of extra money doesn't sound like much, do you have a part-time job?"

"Yeah, I do part-time shifts at Mako Mart, but Sis and I also occasionally do Salmon Run shifts for Grizzco Industries," Orion said, leaning against a wall. "It's a bit scary, but if you've got a team who knows what they're doing it's pretty rewarding."

"Grizzco, huh… I should look into this 'Salmon Run' thing, it sounds kinda fishy." There was a brief pause. "Ugh, that pun was not intended."

That got a laugh out of Orion. "Welcome to Inkopolis, we've got puns everywhere."

"Anyway. You're gonna be all set for tomorrow?" X asked. "I'd love to talk more, but maybe after this whole thing is resolved."

"Yeah, sure… I've got butterflies in my stomach thinking about it, but I've come too far to stop now," Orion said. "And… I gotta watch over my sis. She can charge headfirst into situations without thinking, so I gotta watch her back. We're family, we gotta take care of each other, right?"

"That's right. Good night, Orion, seeya in the morning," X said.

"Good night, X," Orion said, hanging up before heading back into his dorm.

"Hey, Ori, who was that?" Liam asked as he was setting the table. He had aqua eyes, a 'hipster' hairstyle, a pair of Designer Headphones around his shoulders, a Black V-Neck Tee, and a pair of Blue Laceless Dakroniks.

"A new friend I met today. Maybe if we get lucky tomorrow I might be able to introduce you to him," Orion said, sitting down at the table. What he said was mostly true, so he was able to say it with a straight face.

"Oh, sweet, does he go to our school? Maybe we could finally have a consistent fourth team member," Koji said, coming over with the food. He had green eyes, was spiky-haired, and liked to wear tinted shades, a Green Zip Hoodie and Cyan Trainers.

"I'm afraid he doesn't, he's older than us as well," Orion frowned. "I'm sure you'd really like him, though…"

"What are you up to, anyway? And I know you're doing something with your sister as well, because I've seen you leave campus with her, but even Karlene doesn't know what you two are doing," Liam said.

"You actually talked to Karlene? I thought you didn't like her," Orion said, blinking.

"That team are our rivals! Well, some of our rivals. And I don't like fraternising with the enemy," Liam said.

"We're Turf War team rivals, not opposite sides in a war, Liam," Koji said. "You take these things way too seriously."

"I take it seriously because I wanna be a pro!" Liam declared. "She's a rival, end of story!"

"It's fine to play up rivalries for kayfabe but not in real life, dude," Koji said. "How do you think Ori feels about that? His sister is on that team."

That gave Liam pause, as he looked down at his food. "Alright, I'll… Try and tone it down a bit, I guess. Ori, when're you gonna start joining in on our practice sessions again?"

"I'll be more free after tomorrow, I hope," Orion said. I just hope that happens and I don't come home in a body bag or something…

❖

"You're right, they are good kids," X said, as he and Marie finally sat down for dinner. He tasted the fish, and nodded in approval. "This is good."

"Thanks, I like to think I'm a decent cook, at least, when I bother to put in the effort," Marie chuckled. "And… Yeah. It's why I feel bad about asking them to put their lives on the line."

"Sometimes that can't be helped. Good people often have to do what they're doing to do the right thing," X said. "I'll make sure they come back alive and in one piece. I promise. And we'll bring Callie back to her senses, even if we need to drag her kicking and screaming."

"Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if you had to do that," Marie sighed. "But thank you. Do you need sleep or a recharge, or…?"

"I'll see if I can recharge myself with one of the power outlets around here," X said, "I don't need sleep, per se, but I can do it while recharging. Either that or I could get a Zapfish to help me recharge."

"Guess we're basically set, then. I asked Sheldon to make sure the weapons are in tip-top shape for tomorrow, so that should be covered," Marie nodded.

"Sheldon?" X blinked. "You mean the guy who was talking over the comms with us during the fight with the Octoweapon?"

"Yeah, he's a Horseshoe Crab, runs Ammo Knights. His grandpa fought in the Great Turf War in the original Squidbeak Splatoon with Gramps," Marie said. "He's a bit eager to use this whole affair as an excuse to test out new weapons, though. I know, sounds worse than it is, his business is selling weapons for Turf War."

"Good, otherwise he'd sound like a war profiteer," X said dryly, as he ate. "Heavens knows humans had too many of those back when they were around…"

"Sheldon's a good guy, I have no doubt about that, but yeah, he's still got a business to run," Marie said. "Anyway. Knowing DJ Octavio, he's probably gonna pull out an upgraded version of that Octobot King mech of his he used the first time he fought against Agents 3 & 4, likely with some new tricks. But he's probably gonna still throw those robot arm punches that you can send back at him."

"Good to know. What are Agents 3 & 4 like, anyway?" X asked. "I've seen their files… Ethan and Ayane, right?"

"Yeah. Ethan's a bit of an idiot, honestly, Artemis kinda reminded me of him at first. He wised up a bit by the time he and Ayane beat Octavio, but oh my cod is he ever a massive doofus," Marie chuckled. "Ayane… She can be hard to read sometimes, and she's edgy and a bit scary sometimes, but she's honest, perhaps a bit brutally so, and tries to do right by other people. She and Ethan dated for a bit, it didn't work out."

"I'd like to meet them… And your grandfather, too. Any idea when they'll be back?" X asked.

"No… I honestly haven't gotten any communications from him since they left," Marie said. "I'm honestly a bit worried, but I know those two will keep him safe. I just hope he doesn't wander off by himself."

X decided to keep any questions of Cuttlefish had gone senile to himself. "So we're not getting any backup, then."

"Very likely not, but all things considered, I'd prefer to keep our team small," Marie said. "You don't have respawns, but those two usually have only limited respawns between them, so…"

"Right, stop them from getting splatted too many times," X said. Easier said than done, but…

"Yeah. I'm putting their lives in your hands, X. Please… Don't let me down," Marie said.

"I'll do my best," X said. I just hope my best is more than enough…

Chapter 3
Chapter Three

Koji bit his lower lip nervously as he followed along behind Liam, following his lead as they stayed out of sight, peeking ahead to make sure they hadn't lost their target. "Liam, are you sure about this?" He whispered.

Liam leaned out from behind a car. They could both see Orion jogging towards Inkpolis Square. "Yeah, I'm sure. Whatever Ori's up to, it's driving me nuts, and I wanna know what it is."

"Dude, he'll be upset if he finds out we've been tailing him," Koji said, as they moved up. Fortunately, their tail didn't seem to be aware that he was being actively followed. Still, Koji felt kinda bad about this.

"Better to apologise afterwards than ask permission first," Liam said. "Why is he headed for the Square…?"

As they followed, they saw Orion stop on top of a large manhole in the northwest corner of the Square. He then changed into squid form, slipping into it.

"Okay, that's definitely suspicious," Liam said, running over to the manhole, with Koji at his heels. "I never noticed this manhole before… Where does it even go?"

Koji gulped, "maybe we should stop here, Li-"

Liam ignored him and went into squid form, passing through the grate.

"Oh, come on…" Koji groaned. Despite his hesitation, he followed suit.

❖

In the morning after breakfast, X teleported himself and Marie straight to Squidbeak Cabin at Octo Canyon, which Marie found rather convenient. Now it was just a matter of waiting for the two agents to arrive.

Artemis arrived first, but she was accompanied by two other Inklings, and looking very sheepish. "Sorry, Marie, they overheard my call with X. For what it's worth, they're volunteering to help."

"I'm Karlene Knight, this is Hinata Fujiwara," Karlene said. "We're all on the same Turf War team, B-rank on average. We're not gonna let Artemis risk her life without us backing her up."

"I… I appreciate the offer to help, but there are complications to that," Marie frowned.

Before she could elaborate further, Orion arrived at the camp, popping out of the pipe, "sorry if I'm late… Wait, Karlene? Hinata? What're you doing here?"

Suddenly, two more Inklings popped out of the pipe together, two boys. The first of the two blinked, and stared at Orion, "so this is where you've been going, Ori?"

"GAH! Liam?! Koji?!" Orion jumped in a panic.

"Sorry, Ori, Liam wanted to see what you were up to," Koji said apologetically.

"You didn't notice you were being followed, did you?" X sighed, crossing his arms.

"AND YOU TWO AS WELL?!" Liam snapped, pointing at Karlene and Hinata.

"Well, at least this isn't going to be boring," Koji said dryly.

"Oh, great, these idiots," Karlene frowned. "That being said… More help might be a good thing. You guys are decently skilled, at least, so as long as you pull your weight, safety in numbers might work out even better."

"Uh, I think we're missing some context here, what's goin-" Koji stopped when he saw Marie, and his jaw dropped. "Uh, Liam, that's Marie of the Squid Sisters! Right over there."

"WHAT?!" Liam's attention immediately locked on to Marie. "Holy carp that is her."

"Yeah, yeah, stay fresh and all that," Marie said, doing a half-hearted pose. "This is gonna be a headache…"

"Okay, everyone shut up," Karlene said. "Liam, Koji, listen. The Great Zapfish was stolen by the Octarians - you know, those guys from the Great Turf War a hundred years ago? We're trying to get it back by fighting through this canyon to their headquarters."

Liam blinked, and asked, "Ori, is this true?"

"Totally true," Orion nodded, "sis and I have been spending the last week or so doing missions during our free time. Turns out Marie is Agent 2 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, and the Captain is Captain Craig Cuttlefish, who lead the original Splatoon during the Great Turf War - we learned about the guy in school, remember?"

"Oh. This is actually pretty serious," Liam frowned.

"Yeah. Which is why, as much as I don't like you, I'm willing to swallow my pride so we can work together and save Inkopolis," Karlene said.

"Hold on, let's not get ahead of ourselves," Marie said, rubbing her temples. "Firstly, the respawn points around here have limited power, usually around three or five respawns. This isn't some Turf War match, if the power runs out and you go down, you're dead. That's partly why I haven't gotten more agents in on this, there's only so many respawns to go around."

That caused everyone to freeze up. It was only several seconds later when Liam took a deep breath. "Then we can't afford to get splatted even once."

Karlene nodded in agreement, arms crossed. "This is life or death, we gotta act like we've got only one shot."

"Wow, I've never seen Karlene and Liam agree on anything before, it's so surreal," Artemis said.

"Okay, fine, but if you're going into battle against the Octarians, you'll need Hero Suits for protection, and I don't have any more spares," Marie said, unlocking and throwing open the armoury closet to demonstrate, only to find it completely empty. "What the-"

"Did someone say spare hero suits? Looks like I'm just in time!" Spoke a male voice from above, as a hover-truck landed in the camp area. Hopping out, was a horseshoe crab with an almost military-style outfit and a set of brass binoculars as glasses. X guessed this was Sheldon.

"Wait, Sheldon?! What're you doing here?" Liam asked.

"My grandpappy was in the original Squidbeak Splatoon, and, well, I owe the Squid Sisters some favors. But this has also been a fantastic opportunity to test out new weapons!" Sheldon said, opening up the truck. Inside was a full rack of fully-upgraded Hero Weapons, along with a fresh new set of Hero Suits, more than enough for everyone.

"Wait, you knew something like this would happen?" Marie blinked.

"Well, I figured it'd probably happen, especially when you had to lend yours and Callie's suits to 5 and 6, so I prepared just in case. Also, you know, you never know when you need a few spares in case the old ones get damaged," Sheldon said. "You're lucky these were finished in time. Sorry, X, I haven't been able to order a set in your size yet."

"I don't think that's going to be much of a problem, Sheldon, thank you," X chuckled.

"Oh, and the lab is secured, those Octarians ain't getting in anytime soon," Sheldon said. "I've secured all the data, including X's blueprints. I wish I had more time to look them over, Dr. Light was a true visionary!"

"X is a robot from the human era, by the way," Artemis said to the newcomers. "We found him in a lab the Octarians were excavating. He'll be a huge help for when we storm the enemy HQ, he's got an arm cannon and everything."

Liam blinked. "Huh. I was wondering who he was and what his deal was."

"That is so cool," Koji grinned. He then shook his head, "no, focus, we've got more important things to think about right now!"

"This will be a dangerous mission," X said to the newcomers. "There's no shame in backing out if you're too scared to fight."

"Oh, heck no!" Hinata grinned, grabbing the Hero Splatling off the rack. "We said we'd help our friend, and we're not backing out now!"

Liam took a deep breath. "Koji, what about you?"

"Of course, Boss, we're not gonna abandon Ori when he's trying to save Inkopolis," Koji nodded. "Sure, I'm a bit scared…"

"Dad always told me courage isn't about not feelin' fear, it's about knowing fear and staring it down till it blinks. I'm scared too, but that ain't gonna stop me," Liam said. "We're in."

"I'm not gonna convince you kids to just leave, am I? Alright, fine. Let's see… You're Agent 7, you're 8, you're 9, you're 10," Marie said, pointing to Karlene, Hinata, Liam and Koji in that particular order. "Get your Hero Suits on, and pick your weapon. We're going to do some basic drills, and then we're going straight into the heart of enemy territory. You are now all in the New Squidbeak Splatoon as of this moment. Our objective is to take back the Great Zapfish by the end of the day."

As everyone got ready, X couldn't help but look on in bewilderment and worry. They were putting more people in danger, but… They knew what they were getting into already and had agreed to this knowing that. All he could do right now, was keep an eye on them and make sure they got through this in one piece.

Karlene had grabbed the Hero Dualies. Liam went with the Hero Roller, and Koji picked the Hero Blaster.

"Also, we might have to fight Callie, just letting you two know," Artemis said to the boys, "as far as we know she's working with the Octarians now."

"Well that explains why she went missing," Liam sighed, as he practised a bit with the roller. "Great. First time I get to meet one of the Squid Sisters and the other has turned evil."

"We don't know that for certain, Liam," Karlene said. "Maybe she's being blackmailed or something?"

"Either way, we won't know what's going on until we confront her," Koji said.

"We'll split up into three teams - Agents 5, 7 & 8, Agents 6, 9 & 10, and X by himself," Marie said. "Best to utilise your existing team synergies for now. We'll be practising working together as a larger group first, but three teams will help us cover more ground and get our hands on all of the captive Zapfish before we go straight for the leader himself."

Everyone nodded. "Yes, ma'am!"

❖

Cephalon HQ was at the bottom of Octo Canyon, and it was a large compound. It was dark and foggy, lit up only by the variety of lights across the platforms. The only notable landmark was the huge hatch, covered in Octarian ink.

"Oh my cod, it's like the Octarians want to look like insane supervillains," Liam complained.

"We've got company," X said, spotting Octolings on higher platforms. He formed his buster. "Go. I'll keep them busy. You've got Zapfish to rescue."

"You make sure my bro comes back okay, Liam, or I'll splat you myself!" Artemis said, as her team dashed for one of the kettles.

"Let's just go," Orion said, obviously trying not to panic as his team rushed for another kettle.

X looked at the Octarians coming out of the woodwork, all focused on him. "I don't want to do this, but I will if I have to. You have one chance to walk away!"

None of them moved, weapons still pointed.

"Fine. Who's first?" X asked, buster charging.

❖

Once the first wave of enemies was cleared, X began searching through the compound's surface buildings for something he might need to do. There were a couple of Zapfish that needed liberating, but there was one surprise found in an armoury.

It was another one of the capsules, and this time a blue hologram formed inside, taking the shape of Dr. Light. "Inside this capsule are the Body Parts. Enter the capsule to receive a new set of reactive body armour that will halve most incoming damage. According to my computer's systems, a war has not begun yet, but there will be one if the current crisis, whatever it is, is not resolved. But I know that you can bring it to a peaceful conclusion, X."

The capsule opened, and X stepped inside. His parts were swapped out, and he could see in his reflection the white, gold and blue torso armour covering him, along with a set of wider shoulder pads.

He stepped outside the building after receiving the upgrades, and a Charger shot slammed into his torso. He pointed in the direction of the shot, and fired a charged shot. In that direction he could hear the confused cry of an Octoling, followed by a panicked yelp before she was splatted.

Still, X couldn't help but feel guilty. Maybe he looked like some kind of implacable monster in the face of these Octarians just trying to defend their home base. At least he wasn't killing anyone. Maybe he should change to an ink-based weapon just in case, though, to ensure his shots were less potentially lethal in case the other side ran out of available respawn points…

Still, he raised an eyebrow when he saw multiple Octarians immediately retreating upon seemingly receiving an order via their headsets. "Looks like the big cheese wants them to hang back so he can deal with us by himself… Alright, then, if that's how he wants to play it…"

❖

Once they had access to the inner sanctum, X and the Agents moved in, covering each other as they expected an ambush.

They were not expecting a large, circular arena in a stadium, floating above a void with hundreds of cheering Octarians in the stands. On the other side of said arena, was a concert stage surrounded by purple ink, with a single figure standing with her back to the group.

Hinata grinned, "oh, sweet, it's a concert!"

"I don't think it's just a concert, Agent 8," Koji gulped. "Is… That who I think it is?"

Artemis was a little surprised when Marie used the speaker mode on the agent's headset to speak up. "CALLIE?! Callie, is that you?!"

X recognised Callie immediately as she turned around, arms crossed, but her look was completely different from how she usually was - she had a punkish black tank-top and shorts, purple tights, gold octopus earrings and purple octopus tattoo, along with an octopus tentacle where her old headpiece used to be and a distinct pair of black sunglasses that were animated, with diamond patterns over her eyes that had an eerie look.

"I told you to leave," Callie said, with an undercurrent of rage in her tone. Ignoring Marie's pleading, she suddenly struck a pose. "Now you leave me no choice… Prepare to be rocked! HEY DJ!"

The stage rose from the ink, revealing it to be part of a larger machine, that looked like a mix between a war machine and a soundstage. As it floated up into the air, the group saw the Great Zapfish hanging from the bottom, before it was promptly sucked up into the machine itself, causing it to truly roar to life with sheer power. The machine itself, which X guessed was the Octobot King, had over a dozen speakers, two gold mechanical hands, and a cockpit that also doubled as a DJ setup, with DJ Octavio himself sitting there in octopus form, arms crossed. "Octavio in da houuuuuuuuse! GYAH HA HA! I REMIXED CALLIE'S BRAIN!"

"So that's what this was all about," X snarled. "You brainwashed her!"

That caused Octavio to laugh once more. "Let me tell you a little somethin'. I'm no stranger to manipulatin' minds, see? I already use my music to help my soldiers focus, tune out unnecessary thoughts and follow orders. The method I used for Callie is a bit different, but it don't fall far from the tree. It don't matter as long as I take back what's mine."

It's the shades, then, X thought. Those shades she's wearing must be using a combination of hypnosis and subliminal messaging to make Callie think in a certain way…

Callie disrupted X's chain of thought by announcing, "it's time for our first song - Bomb Rush Blush!"

As the music started, a twisted tense version of Callie's aforementioned single, X only stood still as the Inklings around him immediately scattered to avoid an incoming barrage of ink bombs. Orion and Hinata tried to target Octavio himself with their long-ranged weapons, but their ink was deflected by a barrier around him, only making the Octarian leader cackle, "your puny weapons ain't enough to get through my Octobot King's vibin' barrier!"

X looked down at the floor, processing everything, even as purple ink splattered his body. He could hear Marie's aghast voice in his ear, begging him to move.

The twin fists began launching out at the agents, forcing them to evade. Artemis fired at one of the fists, letting out a whoop as she managed to send it back, causing it to slam right into the Octobot King. Liam followed her lead with the other fist as it was stuck in the ink, slamming it with his roller and sending that back as well.

"Hmph… Not bad, but I was just seein' how smart you punks are. Now I'm really serious!" Octavio yelled, firing a fist again, but this time it spun, deflecting all incoming ink. This time, it headed right for X.

X could hear his name being called by several panicked voices, as he took a deep breath, as artificial as it was.

He raised a hand up, as it glowed green, and he stopped the incoming fist in its tracks. He grunted as the fist pushed against him, but he brought back his other arm, forming a glowing fist from his hand. "You know, I gotta thank you. Now that you've admitted to crossing the line, my mind is no longer clouded with doubt!"

He swung a furious punch, slamming his fist into the larger spinning mechanical one, sending it flying back towards Octavio. "I thought maybe, just maybe, we could sit down like civilised people and talk this whole mess out, but no, it turns out you're just a maniac who brainwashes his own people!"

Following a surprised "what?!" from both Octavio and Callie, the spinning fist was enough to knock Octavio right out of his seat and into the ink. X charged, dashing right towards him and swinging his leg, unleashing a powerful kick that punted Octavio right back into his own cockpit, knocking the mech down and disorienting Callie as well. "Makes me wonder why I even give some people the benefit of the doubt! Things would be so much easier if people could just stop being JERKS!"

X's righteous fury was quickly defused when he noticed everyone else around him were staring at him with various looks of shock and awe. "What?"

"HOLY CARP! That was SO COOL!" Artemis grinned. "You didn't tell us you could do THAT!"

"Oh, uh…" X looked down at his hands, "I didn't know, either."

"Callie! It's me. Your cousin, Marie. Try to remember!" Marie pleaded to a briefly disoriented Callie.

"DJ! DROP THAT SPICY WASABI BEAT!" Callie recovered, striking another pose, her cousin's words evidently falling on deaf ears.

"Not bad, little robot! But I ain't gonna let you pull that off again!" Octavio said, the Octobot King rising into the air. "I'm done playing around. I'm fine with just bombarding you with bombs and ink until you're all done and dusted - you ain't getting through my shield, and you can't outlast me!"

"He's right, with the Great Zapfish's power that mech will keep running long after we're all tired out," Karlene said, as everyone evaded a barrage of what looked like octopus tentacle balls, followed by a barrage of Suction Bombs. "We need a plan!"

"He may have a strong power source, but I'm betting that the shield generator's output can only take so much before it breaks!" X said, his buster charging up. He fired a shot directly at Octavio, and while the shot didn't get through, it did manage to break the shield. "Just as I thought!"

"Agent 6, on me! We're doin' the Charge-&-Roll before that barrier regenerates!" Liam said, rushing over to Orion.

"R-Right, sure!" Orion gulped, holding up his Charger, as Liam suddenly changed into squid form, holding onto the end of the barrel. He aimed for the cockpit, and fired.

As Liam soared through the air both on the launched ink and via the resulting momentum, X couldn't help but admire how novel such a technique was.

"SURPRISE, BUTTMUNCHER!" Liam snapped, slamming his roller right in Octavio's face. His brief moment of triumph was rather swiftly undermined when Octavio boosted the Octobot King backwards, sending Liam tumbling down onto his rear. "HEY! No fair!"

"I'll be there soon, just hold out as long as you can!" Marie said.

"You punks are really ticking me off!" Octavio said, as his barrier regenerated. "I'm gonna make fried squid rings outta you!"

"I think we really made him mad," Koji said dryly as Octavio and Callie started bombarding the arena with various explosives, forcing the team to scatter.

Suddenly, the Octobot King fired off two more spinning punches, with the fists themselves being supercharged with electricity. X was forced to dodge, "even I can't block those!"

"Don't have to!" Karlene said, dashing for the fists and leaping onto one of the magnetic chains, "Agent 5, move! X, take down that shield again!"

As X charged up and fired off another shot, Artemis dashed for the other chain, jumping onto it and dashing up the length, keeping her footing. Karlene did much the same, both throwing bombs into the cockpit and following up with bombarding Octavio with ink. It was only when Callie pulled out a roller and started swinging that the pair were forced to leap away, but that was enough to cause the Octobot King to stop in its tracks while Octavio tried to recover.

X knew they were winning, but this was getting way too chaotic. Right now he was more focused on making sure nobody was getting hit with too much ink, which made it hard for him to actually do damage against the Octobot King, which seemed to be pretty well-armoured by itself.

"I'm here, hold on!" Flying in on top of Sheldon's truck (which had been reconfigured into a mobile stage) was Marie in her Squid Sisters outfit - almost immediately, it was if her own music partially overrode Callie's. She was holding a unique model of Charger. She aimed, and fired.

A precise splatter of green ink sent Callie's shades flying, and splattering Callie's face with ink. She seemed immediately disoriented and stunned, clutching her head with a pained groan.

"YES! A direct hit with my special low-tide ink!" Marie said with no shortage of pride. "While she's stunned, make Octavio pay!"

"GRAH! Those hypnoshades aren't easy to make, you know!" Octavio snapped, flailing furiously. "I'm gonna dubstomp you into oblivion!"

X decided to take things into his own hands properly, dashing around the side of the Octobot King and leaping up, climbing up onto the stage where Callie was. "Callie, I need you to focus and remember. You're not some puppet of Octavio."

Callie looked into his eyes, distracted from singing and dancing by his presence, too disoriented to even try to attack him. "Who… Who are you?"

"A friend," X smiled. "Your cousin is here. She's so worried about you. You remember Marie, right? She's singing right now."

"That voice… It's so… Familiar… Where have I heard it before…?" Callie groaned.

"HEY! GEDDOFF!" Octavio snapped, preparing to double down on his tunes, only for Koji and Hinata to clog up the mech's speakers with ink, mostly stopping his music. "What the… HEY! YOU LITTLE PUNKS!"

"That's right, Callie! Remember!" Callie switched songs as she turned on a music player, holding her hand to her ear, "that heavenly melody!"

Callie struggled to lean out with her hand by her ear, as X helped her keep her balance. "The… The one and only…" Her eyes shot wide open with a brand new clarity to them, "I… I remember! YEAH!"

With a super-jump and a flash of ink, her outfit had changed, to the one X better recognised, as she landed on the mobile stage, joining her cousin as they began to sing. X recognised this song - Marie had shown it to him the night before, the Calamari Inkantation, a remix of a folk song from the pair's home county.

"The Squid Sisters are BACK! WOO!" Hinata cheered.

Suddenly, the sound just… Stopped.

And Octavio started to laugh maniacally.

"Oh, that's not a good sign," Orion winced.

"You ain't using my stage to play your tunes this time, Squid Sisters!" Octavio taunted, as the Octobot King began to reconfigure, the top stage shifting to add more speakers, forcing X off as the mech began to float over to the edge. "And I'm not just repeating my old tricks! X, do you think you're the only piece of human technology my soldiers excavated?"

X's eyes widened as he realised the implications of that. "No… You're not saying-"

Something rose from the void beyond the platform, docking with the bottom of the Octobot King. It was a giant humanoid robot, very mechanical in design, resembling almost a caricature of an old man with an odd moustache. It utterly towered over the group, the arms almost able to reach across the entire arena.

"AWESOME! We get to fight a giant robot!" Hinata grinned.

"We are totally screwed," Koji said. "Like… Three Flyfish at once in a Salmon Run shift screwed!"

"We've come way too far to be stopped by this stupid thing!" Artemis said. "Our ink can drain robot energy, we'll just cover this robot in ink and shut it down!"

"It's powered by the Great Zapfish, Sis, that's not gonna work," Orion said.

"That's right! And I'm gonna have so much fun smashing you little squirts into mush!" Octavio gloated, as the giant robot brought up its arms, and began smashing them down, trying to smash the Inklings and X, forcing them to scatter once again.

X did a quick analysis of the overall structure of the giant robot. Almost immediately he realised that, for all of its size and stature, it was an old robot, and one that undergone repairs sometime in the distant past, likely long before X himself was even created.

A particular part of the robot stood out to him - the glowing green gem on its chest. X charged up his buster, and fired off a shot, causing the gem to crack. "It doesn't matter if it has the Great Zapfish powering it, it's an obsolete design. If my analysis is correct, it's not water-resistant enough to prevent ink from seeping in and damaging internal components. Everyone who can't hit the gem, splatter as much of the robot as you can. If you can hit the gem, focus on destroying it!"

That seemed to give Artemis ideas. She dodged one of the arms coming down, spraying it with ink, causing sparks to fly. "Ah-hah! I knew it! I kne-YIKES!"

It turned out that brute force wasn't the only option available, as the robot's hands also included flamethrowers on the palms. Artemis darted away in a panic as to not immediately get roasted.

Orion and Hinata, on the other hand, were focusing on the gem. With each charged shot X hit it with, the more ink was able to get inside.

"Agent 5, I think you'll want this!" Sheldon called out from the truck, as he guided a drone down to Artemis, dropping its payload. "I got a specially modified Rainmaker for situations like this!"

Artemis caught it. X noticed it was a large, golden fish-shaped cannon of some kind. Artemis grinned, aiming for the gem while charging up, "oh, Sheldon, you shouldn't have!"

She fired it off, the projectile slamming into the gem and erupting into a powerful burst of ink. That was enough to finally shatter the gem, blowing a huge hole in the torso.

"Now I can really do some damage," Koji said, as he moved in with the Hero Blaster, firing off bursts into the open hole, which was already damaging the internals.

"A Rainmaker?! Grr… I'm not holding back anymore!" Octavio said, as he began attacking with the Octobot King on top of the giant robot again, firing bombs and launching fists in quick succession.

However, at this point the larger arms were slowing down significantly, filled with ink, and as ink spilled into the torso hole, the sound of the Calamari Inkantation began to fill the air once more.

"Take it down, Agents! You can do it!" Callie called out eagerly.

"The bigger they are, the harder they fall. You've got this!" Marie concurred.

"SPLAT YOU, SQUID SISTERS!" Octavio cursed, as the robot finally began to fall, arms now useless, causing the head to become level with the platform. The head attempted to suck in the agents, but all it got instead was a massive load of ink clogging up its internals, causing it to break down rapidly.

Octavio, evidently realising that his supposed trump card was done for, detached the Octobot King from it and began to fly upwards.

"Agent 5, Agent 6, X, follow him and finish the job!" Marie ordered.

Ink rails were deployed high above, along with a launch pad on the platform, courtesy of Sheldon. Artemis and Orion launched themselves up to the rails. X stood on the launch pad, and to his amazement, realised that his foot parts could use it to launch himself up as well. With a combination of the launch pad and his dash boosters, he launched himself high into the air, landing on the inner rail right ahead of the siblings.

X already had a game plan in mind. As far as he was concerned, this fight was already as good as finished. He could hear the excited roars of encouragement from his allies below. He could see the Octobot King charging up spinning punches, but it had been damaged enough that it couldn't supercharge them anymore. "You two, take the outer rail!"

"Roger that!" Artemis said, as she leaped onto the outer rail, right ahead of her brother.

The Octobot King launched a spinning punch, but X intercepted it with a glowing punch, sending it back, followed by a charged shot that shattered Octavio's barrier. Artemis and Orion were quick to follow up with the Rainmaker and the Charger, slamming into Octavio, sending him and the mech completely for a loop.

"No, no, NO! I WILL NOT BE BEATEN BY A BUNCH OF SQUIRTS AND A MILLENNIA-OLD RELIC!" Octavio boomed in fury as he launched twin spinning punches at the two squid siblings.

The trio nodded to each other, and they moved quickly. Artemis jumped over one of the fists, while X covered Orion by counter-punching the incoming fist, sending it back. Another barrage of shots followed, slamming into Octavio, sending him and the Octobot King tumbling down to the platform.

As the trio converged on one rail, X and Orion grabbed onto the Rainmaker, and all three of them leaped off, bringing it down on the Octarian overlord in a roar of triumph…

"Breaking news! The Great Zapfish is back! And Callie of the Squid Sisters has been found! Geez, everyone was getting worried for a while there!"

"I know, Pearl! I'm so happy! Things got really scary with both of them missing!"

"Looks like things are finally back to normal in Inkopolis," X remarked, seeing the news on TV at Cuttlefish Cabin as he relaxed on the couch. It was only a day after that final, fateful battle, and X couldn't be happier.

"I don't envy the kids having to go back to school right after saving Inkopolis, though," Marie remarked, back in her kimono. "I wasn't keen on so many of them risking their lives, but I can't deny the results."

"All of them stepped up when it counted," X said. "I'm not sure we could've done it without all of them."

He recalled the celebrations that had erupted immediately after their victory, having joined in on the cheering and laughing with a bunch of weary kids who had just helped save Inkopolis.

"I still can't believe you recruited so many just to save little 'ol me, Marie," Callie teased, wearing a more casual outfit with a pink beanie. "I'm pretty touched, honestly. We'll have a whole army at this rate."

"Wasn't my idea, 5 & 6 weren't exactly the best about handling operational security," Marie replied dryly. "It worked out for the best, I suppose, but I can't say I wasn't uneasy about the risk."

"Well, maybe we should talk to Gramps about setting something up that'll make it way less likely that a respawn point runs outta power on 'em," Callie said. "Still no word from him?"

"Not yet. Maybe we'll look into it if he still takes too long to return, but I'm sure he's fine if 3 and 4 are with him," Marie said, shaking her head.

"Well, as much as I'd like to shoot the breeze with the two of you, I really want to just walk around Inkopolis," X said, getting up from the couch.

The cousins blinked. Callie raised a hand, "uh, question! Aren't you worried about the fact that you're gonna be walking around in broad daylight as a robot?"

"Maybe a little," X admitted. "I don't know if Inkopolis society is ready for me, but I think it'd be best that I don't hide who I am. Pretending that I'm something I'm not really isn't in my nature, I think. Besides, I promised the kids I'd hang out with them after school, kinda hard to do that if I'm trying to hide."

He focused on Callie, and walked over to her, "are you sure you're going to be alright? I can't imagine being brainwashed like that was good for your psyche."

"Eh, I think I'm fine, it was mostly just the shades, and now that they're off I'm good!" Callie laughed, and then immediately groaned, "but why did those shades have to get crushed during the fight, though?! They were so fresh, they looked great on me!"

"Oh no, what a shame," Marie said with a snicker. "But seriously, we can get custom-made animated shades, dummy. So many companies would be falling over themselves for a Squid Sisters endorsement."

"Oooooh, matching shades for a concert! That'd be SO RAD!" Callie said with a wide grin. "You need to come along for our next concert, X! We haven't done one in a while."

"I think I've had enough of lively concerts for a bit. I just want to relax," X said with a chuckle, and glanced at Octavio, trapped in a snowglobe. The Octarian overlord returned a hateful glare. "Oh, right… Is he gonna stay in there this time? He did break out once already."

"Not unless Callie gets brainwashed again," Marie said dryly. "Sheldon's setting up security systems around here, no Octarians are gonna be able to free him anytime soon. Getting him into a proper prison is much harder, for a bunch of reasons."

"Hopefully that'll be enough, I suppose," X said, walking over to the snowglobe, continuing to make eye contact. "I just wish we didn't have to do this."

"Save me your pity, machine," Octavio said with a snort, arms crossed. "You understand nothing."

"Well, I won't stop trying to understand until either you die of old age or you finally come around to trying to settle things peacefully, I'll tell you that much," X said, as he walked away. What a terrible shame. "I understand what your people are going through, but that doesn't excuse your methods. It's been over a hundred years, stop acting like the war is still going on."

Octavio just glared at him contemptuously.

X took a deep breath, shaking his head. "Alright, I'm going now."

"We'll meet up with you later at our apartment. We need to get you your own place," Marie remarked.

"Alright, seeya, X! And… Thank you. Again," Callie said, with a wide grin.

X nodded back, and teleported out.

❖

Octavio watched as X disappear before his very eyes. It was such a shame the Inklings got to him first. He would've been an incredible ally. Oh well, all in due time, he supposed.

"He's cute, isn't he, Marie?" Callie asked her cousin with a sly grin, causing Marie to visibly blush. "You do need a boyfriend…"

"Oh my cod can we not talk about this right now," Marie groaned. "I mean, he's a super nice guy, but I've known him for like a day. Ask me again in several months. I'm out, got some errands to run."

Marie swiftly disappeared into the manhole leading to Inkopolis.

"I was hoping that plan would work this time, but the direct approach clearly ain't working. Ugh, my skills as a strategist got rusty. Oh well, that's what Plan B is for… Isn't that right, Callie?" Octavio remarked. "Spicy beats hidden in the reeds."

Callie looked at him in brief confusion, but then she froze, as her eyes glazed over briefly, and changed, taking on more of a red tint, exactly as he expected. She giggled, "that's right, Master Octavio. They clearly don't suspect a thing."

The hypnoshades were nice for immediate results, but Octavio had the foresight to apply more subtle brainwashing measures. Even when she was seemingly cured of her brainwashing, Callie still a perfectly pliable sleeper agent. Octavio had a special mixtape that, in combination with the shades, engineered deeper mental conditioning.

"Keep the spare shades and the mixtape safe and hidden, and initiate Plan B when the time is right," Octavio ordered.

"Yes, Master," Callie said, saluting. "Your will be done."

Octavio chuckled. Inkopolis would still be his in due time. There was more than one way to win a war, after all…

Intermission 1
Just to tide you folks over until Chapter 4, and since the Octo Expansion arc is a slight ways off...

Intermission 1

Seven watched the dispenser assemble around him as a holographic interface formed in front of him, giving a selection of three weapons. The test description implied he was fighting a singular opponent, so he decided to go with the Dark Tetra Dualies. He always felt he had an affinity for Dualies, even if he also felt he was pretty good with any other weapon type. It was one of the few things he hadn't forgotten.

Seven had woken up alongside Eight in this strange, dark metro system, with only the old Captain Cuttlefish for company. Of course, Seven and Eight weren't their actual names, but since they had somehow lost their memories, due to circumstance, those were the best they could come up with for the time being. After a bit of exploring, they had encountered a strange telephone that seemed to be an interface for an AI, which had told them that if they passed a series of tests and collected a bunch of "thangs", they would be able to ascend to the "promised land". They figured that meant the surface, and considering they were lacking in other options, they decided to go along with it. And as it happened, they weren't entirely without help, as they were in regular contact with two people from the surface, Pearl and Marina. The latter was a familiar name to Seven at this point, though only vaguely.

Unfortunately, the three of them didn't realise how many tests there would be. They had split up to cover more ground, but even that only helped so much.

He ended up paying the toll, and went through the gates with his twin weapons in hand. A respawn point and a launch-pad awaited before him, leaving him with no way back unless he was splatted or triumphed. The pad indicated that he only had three 'lives' before he had to restart the test.

He sighed, and launched himself to the arena. It was large, and a few big cubes were around for cover.

"So you're the little octopus I was told was coming to fight me," spoke a male voice, coming from a figure standing on the cube in the centre, arms crossed. "I was told you were pretty good, which was why I was woken up."

Seven stared up at the figure, noting that he wasn't an Inkling or an Octoling - he sorta looked like either, and yet different. He wore distinct red, yellow and black armour, with a large crescent on his helmet, and what looked like some kind of launcher on his right arm. He was also pretty tall.

"Hold on, that's not an Octarian… Who or what is that?" Marina wondered in Seven's communicator.

Seven frowned, Dualies ready, "and you are?"

"The name's Quick Man," the figure grinned, getting into a battle stance. "Let's see if you can keep up with my speed!"

As Quick Man leaped off the cube, he fired a trio of boomerangs from his arm launcher. Seven did three consecutive dodges, firing back with the Dualies, though the last boomerang cut through his arm, causing him to wince. Those things were sharp… And painful!

"YIKES! Keep away from those things, Seven!" Pearl said.

Quick Man twisted in midair, but he was still splattered with ink. He took off at a run immediately after, firing more boomerangs, "you Octolings aren't half bad after all, I see! I might actually get a decent challenge for once!"

Seven sprayed the ground around him with ink, switching to octopus form to evade the incoming projectiles, retreating as he began switching forms and spraying everything around him. He needed to cover as much ground as possible if he was going to be able to fully use his abilities.

"Okay, I see what you're up to! Smart. But I'm not gonna give you an inch!" Quick Man was in hot pursuit. Seven had never seen anyone move so quickly just on foot.

Seven was swimming and leaping as he scattered ink across the battlefield. His attempts to evade the incoming projectiles were mixed at best, and he wasn't sure he could take many more hits. He took note of how Quick Man didn't seem to even be slowed by the ink. He'd have to try and finish this quickly, then.

Seven suddenly performed an Octo Roll back towards his opponent, spinning in the air to evade multiple incoming boomerangs as he popped back into Ocotling form and sprayed Quick Man with a barrage of ink at point-blank range. "Gotcha!"

Quick Man just grinned, only briefly staggered, and just kept shooting.

Seven rolled to the side, but his opponent was ready for that this time, and he caught a boomerang right to the chest, causing him to explode into ink.

The Octoling boy panted as he reformed back at the respawn point. That should've been enough to take him out, surely. How sturdy was this guy?

He launched himself back into the arena. Quick Man laughed, standing there, not much worse for wear. "You're gonna have to do more than that to take me down. I'm not some weak fleshbag like you. I'm robot designed for combat. And unluckily for you, I'm the strongest robot there is. One life down, two left. Let's see if you can hold out long enough."

"That explains why he's so durable… Are ink-based weapons even going to be enough to-hold on, wait, I've got a reading on his systems… Your ink is draining his energy. Hit him enough times and he'll completely shut down!" Marina said.

Seven chuckled, gripping his Dualies, "alright, then, I'll show you what I'm really made of, pal."

He dashed right for Quick Man, performing quick rolls to evade incoming boomerang blades as he continuously fired. Right before Quick Man had him dead to rights, he suddenly transformed into octopus form, sliding right between his opponent's legs, leaving a little 'gift' in the process, and immediately transforming back, sliding on his back across the ink as he blasted Quick Man repeatedly in the back.

"Ugh, you cheeky little-" Quick Man turned around, but immediately noticed the Autobomb about to explode right at his feet. His attempt to leap away only mitigated the resulting damage, causing him to tumble across the ink before he got back on his feet. He suddenly took out a significantly larger boomerang, brandishing it like a blade with his left hand. "Alright, now you're getting me excited, kid. I'll have to actually stop holding back."

Seven and Quick Man began a dance of death, dodging and countering each other's attacks in quick succession. But Seven realized that he couldn't keep this up for long - Quick Man was taking damage, and Seven couldn't take as many cuts by comparison. Each hit just brought him closer to losing his second life.

So he started darting around cover, blasting his opponent with ink when he came around before taking cover once more.

But this didn't last either. On the fifth try of this tactic, Seven heard something land right behind him, and he spun around, only to be impaled right through the chest with the large boomerang, and exploded.

Quick Man was laughing again when Seven returned to the arena. "One last life, little octopus! It's been fun, but I think it's high time we end this."

Seven took a deep breath… And sped away in Octopus form, dashing behind one of the larger cubes, and spraying his surroundings with ink. He then flattened himself against the wall, and focused on controlling the ink around him.

"You can't run and hide from me!" Quick Man yelled from the other side. Seven heard him leap up and over, as the young Octoling covered himself in a layer of ink, perfectly camouflaging himself against the wall, as he performed a secondary morph behind it.

The other thing Seven remembered was that he was descended from a species of Mimic Ocotpus. Most Octarians had mostly lost their ability to camouflage, but some Octoling families could not only consciously do so, but also control their bodies to a degree and the ink around them to solidify to allow them to take on disguises and mimic various forms. Seven formed a layer of ink that he could see through, hoping it would protect him for just long enough, as he dropped something onto the ground.

"GOTCHA NOW!" Quick Man laughed as he bombarded the floor and wall with boomerangs, only to realize that he was unable to stop himself from landing right on top of another Autobomb, which exploded right in his face. He snarled, looking around as he tried to find his target, "where the hell did you go, you cowardly little-"

Seven bit his lower lip, feeling the pain from multiple boomerangs slicing into his flesh, but fortunately the ink layer had blunted the impacts enough. When Quick Man had his back to him, Seven dropped the makeshift ink layer and immediately blasted him in the back with the Dualies.

"GAH! How did you…?!" Quick Man spun around, striking with the blade. His eyes widened the moment he saw that Seven had somehow taken on Quick Man's own form.

Seven leaped right over the strike before it hit, using the longer, more powerful legs, doing a somersault as he bombarded Quick Man with ink. Unfortunately he completely fumbled the landing, landing on his back painfully as he continued to fire until he was out of ink.

Quick Man slumped over against the wall, looking back at Seven as the disguise melted away. "That's a pretty cool trick you have there. You're… Pretty good, for a meatbag…"

The lights in his eyes went out, and he collapsed, completely deactivated.

"HOLY CARP! I was seriously holding my breath for a few minutes there!" Pearl gasped. "You weren't kidding about being a Mimic Octopus!"

"Are you sure you can get back to the station by yourself, Seven? The train is on its way," Marina asked.

"Yeah… Just gimmie a mo," Seven groaned.

Seven returned to the station platform, feeling sore all over. He had taken the large boomerang for himself, figuring he might as well have an additional trophy after that mess. Maybe he should make a sheath for it, it was pretty sharp, how Quick Man actually held it properly was beyond him.

He took the Mem Cake and recorded the points added to his CQ-80. It took a few minutes for the train to arrive, but he stumbled aboard.

"SEVEN! Holy carp, are you okay?!" Eight rushed to his side, keeping him upright. Seems she had been through a rough test as well, judging from the bruises. "That test must've been really rough!"

Eight was his companion in this dark metro, and someone who could keep his spirits up when things felt hopeless, which he was not remotely short on gratitude for. She was a light-skinned, green-eyed girl with a variation of the 'tentacurl' hairstyle, with her two back tentacles being significantly larger and partially tied back with a blue hair tie with yellow spots.

"Fought a guy claiming to be a robot… Quick Man, his name was. He wasn't that tough," Seven tried to fake a smile through the pain. "Though his boomerangs hurt. A lot."

"Looks like we both fought robotic enemies," Eight said, guiding him over to one of the seats. "Fought a guy calling himself 'Air Man'. Boasted about being unbeatable and such. I shut him up when I plugged up his fans with too much ink."

"They're definitely serious about making us prove we're worthy of reaching this 'promised land'," Seven groaned, sitting down. Eight started spraying him with a medicinal spray kindly provided by the train's conductor for post-test healing.

"Welcome back, Agent 7," spoke the elderly Inkling approaching them. Captain Cuttlefish looked the boy over, "that's not the work of Octarian weaponry, that's for sure. You said you fought a 'Quick Man', correct?"

"Yeah, even took a picture of him," Seven said, showing him using the CQ-80.

Cuttlefish stroked his beard in thought. "That form, that technology… That's human, alright. Did Kamabo Corp get their hands on some ancient lost human technology…? I guess that doesn't matter right now."

"Human technology, huh…? I can't help but think there's a lot of technology down there that isn't made by Inklings or Octarians," Marina said. "I'm seriously wondering who or what Kamabo even is."

"You two should rest, you guys look absolutely pooped after all that," Pearl said. "Like, not gonna lie, those fights were kinda scary."

"If only I could get this weapon to work," Eight frowned, holding the weapon she had on her belt. It wasn't a ranged weapon, but it needed to be extended before it could be properly used. "I know I used to use it, but I can't remember what it was or how I used it before…"

"Well, at any rate, get some rest, you two," Cuttlefish said. "We've still got days ahead of us at the very least before we finally collect all four 'Thangs'."

Seven was glad that there was free food and drinks for passengers, and the central station had a side-area where they could sleep. Still, enduring all of these tests was a trial in and of itself.

But he wasn't going to give up. The surface was in sight, and all he had to do was push forward.

Chapter 4

Artemis stretched as classes finally ended for the day, heading out into the afternoon sun. Going straight back to her studies after saving Inkopolis sucked, but she was still riding on a high after that and she didn't want it to stop anytime soon, so she was trying to not let school get to her.

Walking with her were all five other agents. All of them were in their school uniforms - the unspoken plan was, as usual, to head back to their dorms and switch to their fresher gear.

As they approached the school gates, Orion pointed to someone waiting just outside. "Hey, isn't that…?"

Artemis blinked, taking a look. Standing there, smiling and waving to them, was an unmistakable face with black hair, but this time, instead of armour he was wearing a Takoroka Nylon Vintage jacket, a nice pair of black pants and Black Seahorses on his feet.

"Oh, dope! Hey, X!" Artemis grinned, dashing ahead. "I wasn't ex-ASRRRRHHHHFFFFOPFSMFMDMFKSSS-"

That sound was due to her tripping and tumbling several times over until she stopped face-first on the ground, eliciting winces from everyone around her. "Ow."

"Are you alright?!" X asked, helping her back to her feet, with a look of concern.

"I'm good, I'm good, I'm pretty tough!" Artemis said, forcing a grin through the pain, "still hurts, though."

"You're way too reckless, Arti," Karlene said dryly as the group caught up with her. "Looking pretty fresh, X."

"I wasn't gonna care much about clothes, but Marie told me that if I was gonna walk around in Inkopolis I should at least get some more normal clothes. She then dragged me to a few shops," X chuckled. "I need to pay her back someday."

"Well, the plan was to get changed and then do some good ol' fashioned Turf War," Liam grinned, punching his palm. "Wanna come with? Both our teams could use a fourth player."

"I can watch, sure, but I don't think I'd be able to compete. I don't exactly have an unlimited ink supply… And also my weapons would not be legal by any standard," X said with a shake of his head.

"You sure you're okay just walking around looking like, well… That? Even without the armour, you don't look like an Inkling at all," Orion said, as the group began to head for the dorms.

"I'm sure. As I said to Marie, I'm not going to hide who I am," X nodded. "I'm the only robot in this whole world active as far as I know, and the closest thing to a live human anyone has seen in thousands of years, but I want to put my best foot forward."

Not wanting to hide anything, huh…? Artemis glanced around, seeing other students gossiping about the strange person, but they didn't seem to be wary, just curious. Wish I could do that…

"Well, nobody seems to think you're super out of place or anything," Koji said. "Inkopolis is populated by all sorts of species."

"Well, nobody flying into a panic is a good start," X said. "Though if word really gets out about an actual robot hanging around the place…"

"Aw, you're worrying too much! You're like, a super nice guy, there's no way anyone can dislike you!" Hinata said.

"Says the Pollyanna," Liam said dryly. "I'm still kinda bummed out we can't tell anyone about… You know."

"That's what we agreed to when we signed on, Liam," Karlene said. "At least some of us are mindful about operational security, unlike some people."

Artemis winced when she realised that Karlene was looking at her. "Okay, I slipped up that one time, but at least it meant you two signed on, right?"

"You should've talked to us about it when you first signed on," Karlene said. "Don't get me wrong, you were doing the right thing overall, but just you and Orion doing something so dangerous was a bad idea. We should've set up respawn points powered by Zapfish so we had backups in case something went wrong. Does the NSBS not have proper government backing or something?"

"Honestly, I never thought to ask," Artemis admitted. "It did feel like something of a limited-budget effort, though…"

"Maybe Marie and Callie can fund some stuff, they're rich… Right?" Orion asked in a hushed tone. "Their solo careers have taken off like crazy…"

Even Artemis knew it was a bad idea to expose the fact that they knew the Squid Sisters personally. Though, at this point, Marie felt more like a big sister to her more than a celebrity. And Callie seemed super nice too… Well, now that she wasn't brainwashed, that is.

"Probably?" Koji winced, "they don't seem to be living the super high life… Maybe they're just frugal?"

"Callie does not seem like the type to save up all of her cash, though," Karlene said. "Marie, though, I can totally see it."

"Or she can't be bothered to go on a spending spree," X chuckled, "first night I stayed in their apartment, she was grumbling about wanting to just make instant noodles but she felt it'd be rude with a guest present."

"Yeah, that sounds like her, alright," Orion laughed nervously. "Don't call her 'lazy' to her face, though."

Artemis winced. Marie could be scary when she was mad.

As they came up on the dorms, X stopped. "The Turf War lobby is at the Square, right? I'll go and wait over there."

"Right, sounds good. We'll be there and lookin' fresh as fresh can be!" Artemis grinned.

❖

Artemis walked with the rest of the group towards Inkopolis Square, adjusting her fingerless gloves. She had picked her Red V-Neck Limited Tee, Squidlife Headphones and Black & Blue Squidkid V shoes.

Orion was walking beside her, wearing his White Arrowbands glasses, a Zekko Hoodie and a pair of Sesame Salt 270s.

"I'm not used to what Inklings consider 'fresh', but I think you guys look nice," X remarked, leaning against a pole right outside the lobby entrance. "You sure you're fine with missing a team member each?"

"Eh, it's a minor inconvenience, a lot of folks don't have a team and just join teams on the fly each day," Liam shrugged. "Just harder for team coordination, really."

"We'll make it work," Karlene agreed, "I can handle a random or two. Not sure about Liam, though, his leadership skills need work."

"HEY! Say that to my face!" Liam snapped.

"There's a limited number of arenas available at any given time," Artemis explained, "have you seen the 'stage announcements' on Inkopolis News? That's where each rotation is announced. Anyhow, we should get inside and get ready."

"Just remember to have fun, it's just a game," X chuckled.

"R-Right! You're right, it's just we haven't gotten back into Turf War properly since… Well… Nevermind, I'm sure we'll be fine," Orion said.

"No need to take it that seriously, it's just a game in the end," X said. "Go get 'em."

"You got it!" Artemis grinned, as the kids went to sign on for the day's matches.

❖

Artemis sighed as she sat on the edge of a balcony overlooking the square. She felt good. Exhausted, but still good. Apparently saving Inkopolis was good practice, because she actually went up a rank.

"Not gonna hang out with your friends?" X asked, coming up behind her and sitting down.

Artemis could see the others down at a table in the square, talking together. "I just wanted a moment to myself, that's all."

"Nothing wrong with that, I suppose," X said. "Artemis… The name of the ancient Greek goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, the moon, among other things, back when humans were still around. I'm surprised that name still survived to this day."

"Huh… I didn't know that's where my name comes from. Mom and Dad said it was associated with a skilled huntress, but I guess the 'goddess' part was forgotten," Artemis blinked. "Was 'Orion' also a god?"

"Nah, he was a human who was once Artemis' hunting companion," X said. "I guess Dr. Light left a lot of information in my head, just in case, which is why I know these things. Why the names of hunters, though?"

"Ah, that," Artemis said, rubbing her arm. "Um…"

"You don't have to tell me if you don't me prying," X said, with a soft smile. "I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable."

"No, it's okay," Artemis said. After everything that had happened, if there was anyone she could open up to, it was him. There was no way X would judge her… Right? "My bro and I used to live in the countryside, you see. Dad's a ranger and a hunter, and part of his job is handling certain kinds of wildlife. While humans didn't survive the mass extinction event, a variety of other land-dwelling species managed to tough it out, mostly birds, small mammals like mice or rats, and certain types of reptiles and water-dwelling mammals. And… Not all marine life on land is… Civilised."

"Like the Salmonids," X frowned.

"Oh, the Salmonids are a problem, sure, but there are some big ugly beasties you can find here and there out in the wild," Artemis winced. "Before I became an agent, I wasn't so used to risking my life in combat. But I'm more used to the sight of blood than most other Inklings. And… I've killed more than a few animals, too. I used to take more pride in that than I really should've."

"Well, I guess your father wanted you and Orion to follow in his footsteps?" X asked.

Artemis nodded. "Orion wasn't quite so keen on it, even if he got Dad's hunting instincts. As for me, I loved going out with Dad on hunts. It's just that while I'd like to say I'm good at it, well, I'm not the smartest tool in the shed. It's part of why I'm going to school here in Inkopolis. Dad wants me to shape up and get smarter, see the world beyond our backyard."

"Your dad's a smart guy," X nodded. "Was it hard, moving here?"

"At first, yeah. Then I started making friends," Artemis said, smiling as she thought wistfully back to those early days. But then came the next part, and she frowned. "But I'm not doing so hot with my studies. I like to go with the flow, you know? I don't like getting tied down, I'd rather be flexible. Which is a both a blessing and a curse."

"Meaning you can be somewhat unfocused sometimes?"

"Yeah. Thank cod I have Karlene and Hinata to help me study, otherwise I'd be doing a lot worse," Artemis sighed. "Part of why I love Turf War matches and got into saving Inkopolis is because I love the thrill of the hunt. Except it turned out 'hunting' other people is a way different experience than hunting wild animals, especially when they're more than able to fight back. I think that might be the other reason Dad sent me to Inkopolis."

"I'm not sure why you're so uncomfortable with telling other people about this," X blinked.

"X, how would you feel if you got sent to some city school not because you wanted to go but because your parents thought you were a failure and wanted you to shape up?" Artemis said flatly.

"You really think that's what they think of you?"

"At the time… It sure felt like it. Part of me knows they just want the best for me and stuff, but… Uuuuuggggggggghhhhh," Artemis leaned forward, resting her head on her hands. "I know, it's stupid, but I just can't help but feel I let them down. And that I'm still letting them down by not living up to their expectations."

"I sympathise, even if I can't exactly relate. Apparently I had brothers and sisters as well," X said, looking out towards the square. "Sheldon found recordings in Dr. Light's lab. A 'time capsule', if you will. Various robots coming in to visit Dr. Light in his dying days, hoping they'd still be around when I wake up. So hopeful for the future. Yeah, so much for that."

"Turns out a lot can happen in just thirty years, huh? Sorry to hear that, X," Artemis said, now feeling a little guilty. At least she had a family who was alive and she had fond memories of. X didn't even have that.

"You don't have to feel guilty just because you have a better family situation than I do," X shook his head. "How much do your friends know?"

"Bits and pieces, just not the worst bits," Artemis said. "Either I change the subject or use half-truths to make myself seem better than I am."

"Well, if they really are your friends, they'll understand," X smiled. "It's okay, Artemis."

Artemis looked over at her friends, and ultimately swallowed her pride. "Yeah. I guess you're right. The sooner I get it off my chest, the better. Thanks, X."

She went back down to the square, walking over to the table where the rest of the group was talking. "Um, hey, Karlene, Hinata? I guess I haven't been as open as I should've been about myself."

❖

Orion just sat silently as he watched his sister open up to her teammates about a past she had been too scared to really tell them before. When X came to sit down, it was obvious to Orion who talked her into it.

"Well, I guess that explains why you beg us to help with your studies so often," Karlene said. "Arti, I get it, don't beat yourself up about that."

"It doesn't help that I can't even tell Dad I helped save Inkopolis," Artemis sighed.

"Maybe you should talk to Marie about that," Hinata said. "But it's not too late to get your act together, you got us to give you a good kick in the rear when you need it!"

"Not what I'd say, but she ain't wrong," Karlene said. "We're with you, Arti. Just don't be afraid to ask for help. Everyone's got their issues."

"Thanks, guys," Artemis smiled softly.

"Ori's a bit more open about that sort of thing to us," Koji said, turning to Orion, "you said you're not so keen on hunting, right?"

"I mean, I'm not bad at it, and it's not like I don't enjoy it on some level? It's just that I'd rather do other things with my life," Orion sighed. Coming to Inkopolis for the first time was like a dream come true for him.

"What do you want to do with your life, then, Orion?" X asked. "Or are you still figuring things out?"

"I mean, I'm leaning towards tech research, but yeah, pretty much the latter," Orion nodded. "That being said, I'm not a super people person like Sis."

"He could barely speak a word at a time when he first started living in our dorm," Liam said. "Koji and I gave him some space and let him get used to having us around."

Orion remembered those days. He was used to the pair now, but originally something about them got him too worked up and anxious to really engage in conversation. Somehow, he had felt more comfortable around his sister's dorm-mates than his own. Not because he didn't like Liam or Koji, but… Well, he still wasn't sure why.

Liam seemed to notice his unease about this topic, and he switched topics, addressing X. "Speaking of living situations… You're living with the Squid Sisters."

"And?" X tilted his head to the side, confused. "Yes, I know they're celebrities, but you make it sound like a way bigger deal than it really is. I've just got nowhere else to go right now."

"Don't bother getting worked up about it, Liam, he knows them better as normal people than celebrities," Artemis chuckled.

"I'm not getting worked up about it!" Liam snapped back, in his usual way.

"Then why are you saltier than the sea about it?" Koji smirked, "I think you're missing the forest for the trees, we know the Squid Sisters personally. We celebrated our victory with them last night, after, you know, saving Callie. And they're our superiors, it's not like we won't hang with them again. Seriously, dude, count the blessings you already have, a lot of Inklings would do almost anything to be in our position."

Orion just chuckled to himself. That was the dynamic Liam and Koji had - Liam was headstrong and a capable leader, but could get grouchy and had a habit of suffering from tunnel vision, so to speak. Koji, on the other hand, was the second in command who was way better at keeping the bigger picture in his sights and often helped Liam calm down and refocus.

"Yeah, you're right. Could've at least given us tickets to their next concert or something as thanks for risking our lives," Liam grumped.

"They haven't done a concert together in a while, so we'd have to wait on that," Karlene said. "I'm personally more curious about what happened to the Captain and Agents 3 & 4."

"Marie said she hasn't been able to get into contact with them," X said.

"Haven't heard a peep from them the whole time Ori and I were agents," Artemis nodded, "it's been over a week."

Orion couldn't help but feel worried about that. "That's pretty concerning, hope something hasn't happened to them."

"And we can't go looking for them, either, we don't even know where we'd even start," Koji crossed his arms.

"Aren't Ethan and Ayane like, a year or two older than us? Why aren't they going to school?" Artemis grumbled.

"Gonna have to ask Marie about that, or the Captain when he comes back," Karlene said, but then her phone vibrated. She checked it. "Grizzco just put out a notice for a sudden double-paying shift, but it's gonna be a rough one, apparently. Up to eight people in a crew."

"Yikes, must be really rough if he's asking for crews of eight," Orion winced. He'd been on Salmon Runs before, and they could be scary.

"We've only got six people, though," Artemis frowned.

"You're forgetting me," X said. "I've wanted to see what Grizzco's deal is, might as well get some on the ground experience."

"I mean, if Mr. Grizz will let you use your buster, then we ain't got anything to worry about," Koji said, standing up. "Alright, we'll go to the Grizzco office, you get armoured up. We've got a Salmon Run to do."

As everyone got up and X teleported out, Orion gulped. He had heard stories about these sorts of sudden shifts. He just hoped this wouldn't become one of them.

A/N: You may have noticed that what Artemis said about the current biodiversity in this fic's version of Earth explicitly contradicts Splatoon canon about all mammals being extinct, barring a couple of explicit exceptions. That's because, based on the actual cause of said extinction event, I think the outright extinction of all mammals is a bit too far-fetched - it's obvious that bird species survived, and at least one land species adapted to the apocalypse, since Coconut Crabs are a part of Splatoon's world as of Splatoon 3's Mr. Coco, and they're rather notably not sea-based crabs, even if they mostly live on islands.

So ultimately after discussing the matter with some folks, I decided to stick with the qualifier that most mammals went extinct - all the large ones did, at least. Certain small landdwelling species like mice, rats, etc. survived, along with reptiles, and some water-dwelling mammals survived as well, especially the ocean-dwelling/adjacent ones like whales, orcas, seals, etc. Oh, and birds, obviously. But the balance is still completely flipped towards sea-based creatures who evolved to live on land, with mammals being a minority.

Oh, and it gives me an excuse to use one particular species for a specific character I intend to add to this story.

Chapter 5
Chapter 5

The group of six went right into Grizzco's office at the Square. It was open and nobody else was there, as expected. Orion laid eyes on the wooden radio depicting a bear eating a salmon.

Orion didn't have a good feeling about any of this. He felt like maybe he should back out, but… The extra money was enticing, and his sister and their friends were all for it. How could he say no at this point?

"That was a quick response. Hmm… Just six? That's slightly disappointing," said a familiar voice from the radio. Orion realised that this wasn't a text-to-speech message that Mr. Grizz normally used, it was more natural speech.

"We've got one more who'll be here in a minute, he'll more than make up for it," Karlene said.

Suddenly teleporting in was X, in his full armour. "I'm here."

"What the… You're… Hrm. You look human, but you're not," Mr. Grizz said.

"My name is X. I'm a robot created by the late Dr. Thomas Light, recently unearthed and activated," X said, buster forming as a demonstration. "I'm here to help these six handle this shift, and make sure nothing goes wrong. I have a chargeable solar-powered buster that will probably make short work of anything it hits. Is that acceptable?"

There was a pause from the radio, before Mr. Grizz chuckled, sending a shiver down Orion's spine. "Normally I wouldn't allow doing this so out of the blue, but considering how urgent this is, I'll let this slide. Get me as many eggs as you can, and you'll get paid too. The rest of you have decent records, I think this'll work well enough. Inklings, get dressed in your uniforms, and your weapons, I want all seven of you on the boat in ten minutes tops. X, I'll send you teleportation coordinates, get on the boat and start reading the manual."

The Inklings quickly got dressed, and they used a manhole in the office to head out to the harbour, where a boat waited. X was already on board, reading the manual.

"Just be warned, X, we're not showing the Salmonids any mercy," Karlene said, as the seven of them rode the boat out to sea. "They're absolute lunatics, the lot of 'em, they'll kill and eat anyone and anything they get their hands on. Apparently they will rush perceived intruders fearlessly because they do not fear death, seeing it as becoming one with the world. In ancient times they brought about chaos, death and destruction with absolutely no provocation."

"And Grizzco is letting teenagers fight these things? Good grief," X frowned.

"Hey, we ain't saying Grizzco ain't shady as heck, but they keep their respawn points fully powered and will extract employees if things get bad enough," Liam said.

"Talked to Dad about it once. He actually approved of it - said it would keep me sharp and gives city Inklings a taste of the dangers you can find out in the wilderness," Artemis nodded. "Not sure I agree with him, but I can see where he's coming from."

Orion cut in, "the Salmonids also sell their power eggs to the Octarians in exchange for technology."

"I'm not keen on tarring an entire species with the same brush, and we are intruding on their territory. But as I said, I wanted to see what's going on for myself," X said. "Crazy to believe that salmon have evolved into something like this."

❖

Orion could only twiddle his thumbs, E-liter 3K Scope Charger propped up against his shoulder. The tension in the air was almost utterly palpable as everyone waited.

Said tension was immediately broken when the radio sounded with Mr. Grizz' voice. "Good grief, I can smell the mood from here. Not even small talk?"

Orion nearly jumped out of his seat in panic, but he calmed down. He decided to ask a question that had been on his mind this whole time. "Mr. Grizz, sir… What's going on? It's gotta be something big and important if this is all on such short notice and with such a large crew."

"Excellent question, kid. The Salmonids are gatherin' around a specific location, and I've already got facilities set up there," Mr. Grizz said. "You'll have plenty of verticality to work with, but expect a lot more enemies to splat. I can only spare one Special Weapon for each of ya this time. Coordination is gonna be essential for this one. You'll want your robot friend handling the troublesome Salmonids."

"So he's on Flyfish duty, basically," Artemis remarked.

"Heh, basically. But this also means your quota is much bigger this time. Get as many Golden Eggs as possible. Depending on your performance, I might even triple the payout. This is a huge opportunity for you kids, so don't mess this up," Mr. Grizz replied.

Gee, no pressure, Orion thought as the boat neared their destination, somewhat far out from Inkopolis. Orion's eyes widened as he saw why this place was so notable - the tail of an enormous spaceship could be seen above the water line, with the ruins of some of the rest of the ship strewn around the area.

"This is a human spaceship…" X stood up, putting the manual down. "No wonder the Salmonids are interested in this place."

Orion could see the Grizzco-made structure in the middle of all of this where they'd make their stand, consisting of a series of spiral ramps going up three levels. It was possibly the largest Salmon Run area Orion had ever seen, more than enough for the team of seven to work with. Multiple ride rails circled around the structure, leading right up top.

They all launched up to the top, where the egg basket was waiting. Orion blinked when he noticed something else was there, on the corner of the top level. "What's that doing there?!"

It was another of the Light Capsules - he had seen the first two after they had been retrieved, but this was unexpected.

X stepped up to it, and Dr. Light's hologram appeared. "Inside this capsule are the Head Parts. They will not only provide additional protection for your head components, but also provide additional sensors and a radar system for keeping track of aspects of your environment. In addition to that, the helmet is able to allow you to attack with your head, if you so need to. I'm counting on you, X."

X stepped inside the capsule, and immediately after, he stepped out with a new helmet, now matching the rest of his upgrades along with a pair of gold fins on top. "This might come in handy. Alright, everyone, let's ink this place up and get ready!"

There was no disagreement as everyone rushed to do their part in preparing for the incoming horde. Everyone's loadouts were mostly similar to what they were when they went to fight Octavio, with the exception of Artemis and Karlene swapping weapons. Orion knew Dualies had always been his sister's true love, even if she didn't trust herself to use them responsibly when her life was on the line, because she had a bad habit of doing stupid stunts with them. Orion felt this was still not the best time to be tempted by Dualies, but he knew she was good at using them here.

Orion himself was perched up top, spraying lines of ink as he kept watch. He nearly jumped when he felt X put a hand on his shoulder, but knowing X was right there with him and already charging his buster was enough to at least somewhat calm his nerves.

And then the alarm sounded. The regular Salmonids started emerging from the waters, and even from a distance Orion could see the crazed look in their eyes. In fact, to call them crazed was putting it mildly - the only times Orion had ever seen Salmonids look more bloodthirsty than this were when glowflies were active.

He started focusing his aim towards larger targets, waiting for Boss Salmonids to appear. Right on cue, a Steelhead emerged from the waters, and immediately went after Liam, who was mopping up the smaller foes with his Roller. Orion charged up, taking careful aim, and the instant the inflatable bag emerged from the top of its head, he let loose. The shot hit home, piercing the bag and causing it to erupt and splatting the behemoth instantly, causing it to drop its cargo of Golden Eggs.

Then he saw a Flyfish emerge, and cursed to himself. However, X immediately acted, firing off a charged shot that instantly destroyed the flying menace and dropping its cargo. "Leave foes like that to me."

Orion nodded, and started dashing around the edge of the platform, watching for Boss Salmonids he could potentially splat. Meanwhile, his teammates were tossing Golden Eggs up from lower levels, which he and X deposited into the basket at the first opportunity.

As it turned out, the old steel used by the Salmonids were not particularly resistant to X's charged shots. Steel Eels usually broke down swiftly, leaving them sitting ducks for Orion. Drizzlers were immediately deprived of their umbrella or outright splatted. Scrappers also broke down completely. And Stingers no longer had the height advantage.

The group worked like a well-oiled machine. Eggs were coming in fast and piling up in the basket, his teammates got splatted only a few times, and while the horde was stressful, after everything they'd been through, this felt almost manageable by comparison.

"Maybe we can do this. Maybe this'll actually wrap up without a hitch," Orion muttered, as the second wave ended and the Salmonids retreated into the water.

And then the alarm came. Mr. Grizz's voice came over the radio, "heads up, they're really putting out the stops this time. Not only is a Mothership incoming, but they're sending in Grillers as well. So you gotta deal with both as well as the Smallfries and the Chinooks."

"Me and my big mouth," Orion moaned as he saw the Mothership emerge from the sea, and Grillers starting to emerge as well, focusing on his teammates at lower levels. He always found Grillers incredibly creepy, he just couldn't fathom why Salmonids would so willingly throw themselves into them to be cooked.

"Start shooting down those fliers, I'll handle the grills," X said as he leaped off the top. He charged up a shot, and as he got close to one of the Grillers he aimed for the back legs, causing them to snap and rendering the Griller completely immobile. Now Orion just felt kinda bad for the enemy, they were just completely unprepared for what X had to bring to the table.

No, no, focus, Orion, target those Chinooks, Orion thought to himself as he looked to the sky to see flying Salmonids carrying styrofoam coolers. He took aim, and started blasting them out of the air, one by one. Fortunately, they were slow and moved fairly predictably, and X handling the Grillers allowed the others to start refocusing their efforts more towards the Chinooks, alleviating the pressure somewhat. Okay, I can handle this, no problem, I can-

"ORI! INCOMING MAWS!" Koji called out from below.

Orion was briefly startled, but the warning was enough for him to quickly look at his feet, as a fishing bobber poking out from the ink came towards him. He leaped backwards, just in time to dodge the enormous salmon that shot out of the ink, snapping at where he had been just moments earlier. "Oh, you've gotta be kidding me! Maws as well?!"

As the Maws disappeared into the ink, it began moving towards him yet again. Orion took out a bomb, waited for it to come to him, and dropped it right at his feet as he leaped away once more. The bait was swallowed, and the Boss Salmonid exploded into ink, leaving behind more Golden Eggs which Orion quickly deposited, along with any others that had been tossed up.

He looked back up at the sky. The Mothership was moving towards the egg basket. "Aw, carp. Mothership is moving in, someone help me fend it off!"

"You called~?" Hinata came riding up on one of the rails, carrying a Golden Egg which she quickly tossed into the basket. She brought up her Heavy Splatling. "Let's teach that big box a lesson!"

"Thanks, Hinata," Orion nodded, taking aim at the Mothership and firing. Fortunately the Mothership was a fairly easy target for the pair of them, and the suction tube barely had time to even reach the basket before the Mothership was forced to retreat. "We gotta do that a second time once it recovers…"

Until then, all he and Hinata could do was shoot down the fliers and grab the eggs as they came, while evading and splatting incoming Maws. The Mothership began coming back down again for another attempt, but this time multiple Stingers emerged as it did, targeting the pair up top, forcing them to evade instead. Orion was now starting to panic as he tried to deal with one of the Stingers first. There was no way he'd be able to do-

Suddenly, a charged shot ripped through the Mothership, the container itself unable to properly withstand the attack, and it damaged the anti-gravity systems, sending the whole thing tumbling back into the ocean. The Stingers were knocked off their towers in short order with quick energy shots and well-aimed Charger snipes.

"You two alright?" X asked, landing on the top level as he started throwing in more eggs. "That was a tricky situation to deal with."

"No kidding, we owe you one, again!" Hinata giggled. Everyone else was mopping up the stragglers. "We've gotten ourselves a massive haul!"

Orion took a deep breath, as the wave timer finally expired, and everyone regrouped back on the top level while the basket disappeared into its hatch. "We actually made it through that whole shift…"

"Excellent work, that was a fantastic haul. I'm more than impressed," Mr. Grizz said over the radio. "Everyone back to the boat, that should be enough to scare off those Salmonids at least for a long while-"

The waters around the structure started shifting violently. An emergency siren that Orion had never heard before echoed through the air, as something massive emerged from the waters.

It was a giant, grotesquely obese Cohock with a mohawk, with two bulging glowing white eyes, chains around its neck, and a pair of pants with two belts barely holding on to its enormous girth. The Salmonid unleashed a tremendous roar that shook the entire structure.

"WHAT THE SHELL IS THAT THING?!" Liam pointed in genuine panic.

"That's… New…" Karlene nodded. Orion had never seen her actually look so panicked before, either.

"Cohozuna… A King Salmonid," Mr. Grizz said, with a grim tone that chilled Orion to the core. "I didn't think one would actually leave the deep. I should've prepared for this. Not gonna be able to extract you kids for the moment with that thing around, you have to either take it down or hold out for long enough. Good luck."

"It's being escorted by other Boss Salmonids," X said, spying a Steelhead and a Scrapper come out onto the structure as well. "I'll keep them busy, you handle the King Salmonid."

"Good plan. That big lumbering lummox won't be able to keep pace with any of us," Koji grinned, "I bet it can barely move on land-"

Suddenly, the Cohozuna launched itself high into the air, enough to easily land on top of the whole structure with little effort, and it did, sending the group scrambling as it crashed down. Parts of the structure actually crumpled from the weight and force, bringing a huge chunk of the top level down to the middle.

"I stand corrected. That is so, so not fair," Koji winced.

"If we make it out of this alive and unscathed, I'm gonna have one shell of a story to tell to Dad," Artemis gulped, as she unloaded her Dualies on the massive Salmonid.

With X handling the Boss Salmonids, everyone except Orion started pulling out their Special Weapons to unload on the king. Orion, however, couldn't afford to use his Sting Ray, as it'd easily make him a sitting duck, and the Cohozuna was throwing its weight around quite literally, making staying near it precarious at best. So he tried to keep his distance as best he could, firing shots to do as much damage as he could muster. But even with all of them focusing most of their fire, the Cohozuna was absorbing an astounding amount of damage.

And then a Flyfish threw a spanner into the works before X could destroy it, targeting him with missiles. Orion, in his panic, dashed away from the splash zone before the missile barrage came down, but found himself right in front of the massive Salmonid, which looked down on him with an evil grin before shifting its weight forward.

"BRO!" Artemis cried out, rushing over to Orion and shoving him back as hard as she could. She tried her best to dash out of the way as well as their enemy came down for a belly-slam.

Orion heard the chilling scream his sister made as her body was crushed by the massive weight, exploding into ink.

The Cohozuna's face was right in front of him, making a distorted cackle of triumph.

Orion saw red.

He grabbed the monster's mohawk with one hand as he activated his Sting Ray, slamming his foot down inside the beast's jaw and yanking its head upwards with all of his might, shoving the nozzle into its mouth sideways before twisting it to jam the arc at the front inside its jaw, locking it in. "Don't. You. Dare. Hurt. My. SISTER."

The Cohozuna forced itself back into standing position, but Orion still held on, trying to force its head up as much as he could, and pulled the trigger, firing off a massive stream of ink right into its maw and into its insides as he screamed bloody murder right into his enemy's face.

The monster started trying to shake him off, but he held on for dear life, trigger held firm. He witnessed the sheer panic in its eyes. Good. Enjoy your last moments in terror, you son of a fish, he thought.

The monster began to expand, howling and gurgling its last as it exploded violently. Unfortunately, this also launched Orion high above, tumbling through the air until he crashed into the sea, the panicked cries of his friends muffled by the water and the ringing in his ears.

He tried to swim back up to the surface, but he was quickly losing consciousness. Before his eyes closed, he saw something enter the water in front of him, extending a hand…

❖

Orion coughed up water as he regained consciousness, briefly struggling to breathe before oxygen safely entered his lungs. He was actually alive.

"ORION!" Someone was hugging him tightly and crying. It took him a moment to register that it was his sister.

"You really gave us a scare, dude. Good thing X dived in to save you immediately," Liam said, sitting next to him. "What you did was reckless as all shell, but it worked."

Orion groaned, sitting up, and took a few breaths. "I dunno what came over me. I saw Sis get splatted, and… I just saw red."

"Either way, it's over. I know this was a special case, but good grief, if this is something you do regularly…" X sighed, hands on his hips. "I'm just glad you all made it out unscathed."

"It was certainly a bit touch and go at the end there, I'll admit, but you did an amazing job," Mr. Grizz spoke up. "You got me a massive haul and took down a King Salmonid. You kids have a future here, I reckon, this'll definitely go in your performance eval. Especially you, Orion, that Sting Ray stunt was risky but clever. And having a Robot Master in your corner certainly tipped the scales quite a bit. All of you are getting a massive bonus for this one. You guys might be my go-to team for dealing with stuff like this, I'll make sure you're better prepared for what the sea might throw at you next time."

Artemis let go of her brother, wiping her tears and making a tired grin. "Dad's gonna be so proud."

"Let's just get back to Inkopolis, get our pay and back to the dorms," Karlene said. "I can't believe we actually did that…"

"It was really fun, though! Let's do it again sometime!" Hinata giggled.

Cue a resounding "NO!" from everyone else. Nobody but her wanted to do that again anytime soon.

❖

When the six Inklings got back to the dorms, they were absolutely beat. Still, Liam and Koji volunteered to make dinner, as they felt Orion more than deserved to take a good long break.

As he rested on the couch, Orion noticed his phone ringing. He picked it up, seeing the name on screen, and answered. "Hi, Marie."

"I heard from X what happened today. What were you guys thinking?" Marie said with a stern voice, making Orion wince. "Grizzco is way too shady for you kids to be getting involved with."

Orion bit his lower lip as he struggled to come up with a satisfactory response. "Sorry, Marie. I felt like I needed the extra money, and we didn't think it'd get that crazy."

Marie sighed on the other end. "I suppose so. I wasn't expecting you to be so reckless, though. Your sister, sure, but you've got a good head on your shoulders, Orion."

Orion couldn't help but mumble something too quiet for the receiver to properly pick up. He wanted to say something, but he felt nervous.

"Orion, what was that?"

"I… Um… You see…"

"Orion. Take a deep breath. What's on your mind?"

"I had my doubts, I had a bad feeling about the whole thing, but… I didn't want to let everyone else down by backing out," Orion sighed. "I just couldn't help but go with the flow."

There was a pause on Marie's end. "Oh, Orion. You shouldn't be ashamed about not going along with something you're not comfortable with."

"I guess so, but… The team would've been down one more person, and… I didn't want to let everyone down. I didn't want to potentially ruin that opportunity for them."

"You should learn to stand up for yourself a little more, I think. Besides, they're your friends. They know you well enough by this point, I'd think. I'm sure they'd understand."

"Yeah… I guess you're right. Thanks, Marie."

"Also X told us about that AWESOME STUNT you pull on that huge Salmonid!" Callie's voice surprised Orion somewhat. Before he could respond, she started rambling, "You're supposed to be the shy kid and yet you just shoved a freaking Sting Ray down its mouth and pulled the trigger like a BOSS! I don't care what anyone says, you're totally agent material!"

Orion laughed sheepishly, "t-thanks, Callie."

"Okay, Callie, that's enough, shoo," Marie said, with the sound of a shove on the other end, and Callie's giggling fading out. "Don't let the praise get to your head, but you need to have more confidence in yourself. You're capable of amazing things, Orion. Callie and I know it, your sister knows it, X knows it, all of your friends know it."

Orion smiled softly. "Thanks… Hey, Marie. Would you mind helping me with Charger practice sometime?"

"You bet. You've got the potential to be a better sniper than me, kiddo," Marie chuckled. "Alright, I'll let you get back to whatever you're doing. Have a good night, Orion."

"Goodnight, Marie," Orion said, before hanging up. He couldn't help but feel warm. Marie and Callie felt like two big sisters he could rely on alongside Artemis. Well, Callie was perhaps less reliable, but Marie was definitely someone he could turn to for advice.

He stood up, and turned around to see how his dorm-mates were going with the cooking. They were standing there, looking sullen. He blinked. "Guys?"

"I should've noticed you were uncomfortable with going along with the Salmon Run, Ori," Koji frowned. "I also should've figured you wouldn't have been able to tell us you thought it was a bad idea."

"You were listening," Orion winced.

"Yeah, and we feel like carp for not asking you how you felt," Liam nodded.

"Guys, it's all water under the bridge now, what's done is done," Orion walked over to them. He hated making them feel bad for something he didn't have the courage to do. "It was my fault for not speaking up when I should've."

"No, it's just as much my responsibility as team leader for not asking how you felt about it. We're a team, Ori, your opinion matters just as much as mine or Koji's, and you're pretty smart on top of that. Next time we consider getting into something sketchy or risky like that, we'll make sure to ask you how you feel about it, and whether you think it's a good idea or not. I promise," Liam said.

Koji nodded in agreement, without a further word needed to be said.

Orion smiled. These two were some of the best friends anyone could ask for. "Thanks, guys."

"Alright, enough sappy stuff, let's get to eatin' already. After that mess I'm starving," Liam said.

"Yeah, I couldn't agree more," Orion laughed sheepishly, feeling his stomach rumble. Despite everything, he didn't feel nearly as tired anymore.

Intermission 2
So, uh. I kinda caught a writing bug tonight, so I managed to get the second intermission done quickly. Enjoy!

If you excuse me, I need to get some sleep.

Intermission 2

Eight panted as she gripped her Octo Shot, carefully patrolling the maze as she inked the ground around her. She was trying to move slowly and silently, not because she wanted to be particularly stealthy, but because her own movements would potentially drown out her enemy's.

She was fighting yet another human-era robot, this time a ninja-themed one by the name of Shadow Man. This enemy was more indirect, disappearing into the shadows and then ambushing her before disappearing once more. The dimly-lit maze did not help things. Shadow Man's large shuriken had splatted her once, and she had cuts from multiple hits since then, with not a lot of damage to show for it on her adversary.

"Your mind is just as lost as your body is in this maze," spoke Shadow Man, his voice hard to place in the dim light around her. "Uncertainty dogs your movements. You are a shadow of your true self."

"What would you know? You don't know me at all," Eight replied nervously.

"I am aware of my function in this place. I am here to test you, one who has lost their way, and their memory," Shadow Man said, his voice now in another direction. "My most sincere sympathies. I too was once a very different person, with a different purpose. Unfortunately, as a robot, I am bound to my programming, and thus have no choice but to follow my orders. I wish we could have met in better circumstances. But as long as fear and uncertainty clouds your mind, you won't be able to win."

"Ugh, for a ninja he really doesn't know when to shut up!" Pearl groaned. "Ignore him and let him have it, Eight!"

The problem for Eight, however, was that ignoring him was not a possibility. His words cut deeper than any of his blades. Sure, Seven didn't really care all that much about who he used to be, but the fact that, for all the memories that were coming back to her, Eight couldn't even remember her name.

And the memories she had regained scared her. She was worried that, if she were to regain her memories… She wouldn't be the same person she was now. That she'd lose everything, including her newfound friends.

She heard something to her left. She dashed backwards, firing in that direction. A blade cut a gash on her arm, causing her to scream in pain as the shuriken returned to its owner, who disappeared once more.

She slumped against the wall. "I can't do this… It's too much…"

You've fought admirably with only one hand tied behind your back, spoke a voice in her head. But you need to unshackle yourself. Internalise this pain. You've lived with it all your life, after all.

Huh…? Who… Who are you?
She questioned in her own thoughts.

Rest now, Princess. I'll fight in your stead.

Eight stood up tall, taking a deep breath as clarity returned to her mind. She tossed the Octo Shot aside, and reached for the weapon on her belt, still wondering why C.Q. Cumber permitted her to bring it into the testing chamber. She held down a button with her thumb, spinning the hidden activation mechanism.

A series of intricate sections shot out, automatically assembling into one long 'blade'. Ink flowed along the 'edge', Octarian technology causing it to flow in a specific fashion with intense pressure in a loop.

"Now I recognise it! That weapon's an Octarian prototype! How did she get her hands on it?!" Marina asked, flabbergasted.

Eight gripped the handle with both hands, waiting for her enemy to make his move as she charged the 'blade', allowing more ink to flow into it.

This time, the sound came from her right. She turned, side-stepped, and swung. The shuriken missed her, while her own counter-attack struck true, actually causing proper damage to Shadow Man, who clenched his side due to the gash in it. "That weapon… A liquid blade projectile?!"

"This isn't some toy for a Turf War. This is a weapon of war," Eight said with authority, preparing another strike. "I suggest you take me seriously, or I will destroy you by way of a hundred cuts."

"Another side of the coin… So the silk was hiding some steel after all," Shadow Man remarked, making multiple hand signs that caused multiple duplicates of himself to appear in a burst of smoke. "Your eyes are no longer clouded. Very well, I shall face you head-on as you wish."

The duplicates charged Eight, throwing shuriken as well. Eight rushed forward, deflecting with quick, expert strikes, slashing through the copies with the ink-formed blade swiftly and decisively.

When she came upon Shadow Man, striking vertically, he suddenly caught the 'blunt' part of the weapon with his fingers. She knew immediately he was physically stronger than her, but with both his hands occupied, she had another trick she could use, letting go with one hand and dropping a bomb at his feet.

Shadow Man cursed under his breath, jumping back and letting go of the 'blade' as the bomb exploded, splattering him. He threw another shuriken as he leaped, but Eight caught it as she started charging up another strike, dashing forward as she spun around and flung it right back at him.

The shuriken nailed Shadow Man right in the chest, causing him to groan in pain. Eight rushed him, and just as he landed, they slashed at each other with their respective weapons, dashing past each other.

Eight grit her teeth. She had taken on a nasty wound around her torso.

However, Shadow Man was much worse for wear, having nearly been sliced in half. "You have the soul of a samurai. Your form inspires awe. Well done, young lady. I hope we meet again… In this life… Or the next…"

He fell to the ground, motionless.

Eight retracted the blade back into its 'sheath'… And blinked. What just happened?

"THAT WAS SO COOL! Sure that weapon is pretty dangerous and would be totally illegal in Turf War but WOOOOOOOOOOOW," Pearl said.

"Eight… You seemed like a totally different person for a minute there. Are you okay?" Marina asked. "Can you still unlock that weapon?"

Eight looked down at the weapon in her hands, and frowned. That part had been a blur. "Sorry, I can't. Also, I think I'm gonna need some of that medicinal spray now…"

❖

Eight winced as her wounds gradually healed from the spray, while she rode the train to the central station, reflecting on the fight that had just ended. She still held the Mem Cake in her hands.

'Another her' had taken control during the fight, revealing combat ability she never knew she had before. Did she always have an alternate personality, that of a ruthless warrior?

As the train arrived at her destination, she stood up, taking it slow. The doors opened, and waiting on the other side were Cap'n Cuttlefish and Seven.

"Eight! You look like you had a bad time, geez," Seven said, helping her off the train. "Pearl and Marina told us what happened."

Seven had been a reliable and friendly partner through this whole ordeal, which was funny, because most people wouldn't think that at first glance. He had green eyes, but his hairstyle was extra punky, with the first tentacle as a mohawk and the three other ones being significantly larger and giving off a 'spiky' impression at the back, going upwards instead of down.

"It's good to see you made it back safely, young lady," Cuttlefish said, as they all sat down on one of the benches at the station. "You managed to get that weapon of your working?"

"Apparently. My 'other self' deactivated it before I regained my senses, though," Eight sighed, examining it, "and how she did it is a blur in my memories. Seven… Do you remember anything new?"

"Not much, to be honest. I actually fought another robot today as well - 'Snake Man'. But he was easier than Quick Man, to be honest. I guess I just got lucky," Seven said. "All I know for certain now is that we were friends… Or at least I was your subordinate."

"Yeah… That tracks with what I remember, too," Eight nodded. "I can't remember what my name was or my exact rank, but I know I was an officer in the Octarian Army. I also remember that I came from a family of Octarian nobility. My other self called me 'Princess' before she took control."

"I wish I could be more help in that regard, but you weren't exactly the only noblewoman in the army, Eight," Marina said. "I think we might've met, once upon a time, but that was a long time ago."

"My eyes ain't what they used to be, but you look troubled, Agent Eight," Cuttlefish said.

"I'm worried that if I regain my memories… I won't be the person I am now," Eight squirmed in place. "What if I was a terrible person? A monster?"

"Whoa, whoa, Eight, calm down. That… Doesn't mesh with what I remember you were like," Seven said, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Besides. We both were touched by the Calamari Inkantation, right?"

"It's not something you just forget," Cuttlefish nodded, "even before losing your memories, you knew the Inkantation. I'll repeat it as many times as I gotta - no fan of the Inkantation is a foe of mine. I believe, even if you were misguided, you both were good people before we met, and I'm sure that won't change even when you regain your memories."

"Yeah, I'm sure you won't change, Eight! People don't just change at the drop of a hat just like that," Pearl spoke up. "Just keep on truckin' so you three can finally get up to the surface!"

"I'm sure the old you was just as much of a kind-hearted person as you are now, Eight. I've got no doubt about that," Marina said reassuringly.

"Thank you. All of you," Eight sniffed, wiping away her tears. "I need a rest. Today's been… A lot."

Seven chuckled, "yeah, me too. Too knackered to even do your evening exercises?"

Eight blinked. "Since when did I-" Then a memory hit her like a truck. "Oh, wow. I used to work out a lot."

"Explains why you're ripped, geez," Pearl chuckled.

Eight was not a slender girl by any stretch - she had well-toned muscles all across her body, and a curvaceous figure for her age. Apparently her old self really worked on her legs in particular. She honestly felt a bit embarrassed thinking about it.

"Well, we were soldiers, and apparently skilled enough to send after 3 & 4," Seven shrugged.

"You know what? I think I'll do my exercises before I rest. Gotta work through the pain," Eight said, as she stood up and started to stretch. "I can't depend on 'other me' to bail me out again."

"Awesome, sounds like fun!" Seven grinned, hopping off the bench.

"Cap'n, um, I think it'd do you good to join in," Eight said. "How long has it been since you last properly exercised?"

"Well, I can give it a shot. No guarantees I'll be able to do much with this ancient body, but we'll see," Cuttlefish got up, taking a deep breath as he tried to stretch. Unfortunately he wasn't doing particularly well.

"So, uh… While you're doing that, I should mention there's a rumour going around about a robot in Inkopolis who looks like a human and showed up out of nowhere," Marina said.

That triggered alarm bells in Eight's head. "That might be bad, if Kamabo Corp is sending their robots to the surface for something. People might get hurt. Could you two look into it?"

"No problemo, I've got an idea for how we could do that," Pearl chuckled. "Just keep doin' what you're doin', and we'll let you know what we find."

"Thanks, you two," Eight said, as she stretched.

She decided that it didn't matter who she used to be or how her memories might affect her. She was who she was now, and that wouldn't change. Right now, her focus should be on the prize in front of her, namely an escape to the surface, so she could see Inkopolis with her own eyes and meet with Pearl and Marina in person for the first time.

The knowledge that their escape was getting closer and closer only filled her with more determination.

Chapter 6
I swear I am on a coddamn roll in the last few days...

Chapter 6

It was the afternoon the next day. And for the most part, another day working as co-anchor on Inkopolis News, live from Inkopolis Square.

Marina had still been a bit more stressed than usual lately, mostly in part due to keeping tabs on and supporting Seven, Eight and Cuttlefish through their journey in the Deepsea Metro. Her research on the Metro itself and Kamabo Corp had turned up frustratingly few leads. And Pearl's assurance that she had a plan to follow up on the robot rumours had not materialised into anything substantial.

At least, not until Pearl blindsided her with the post-stage rotation segment that afternoon. "Now that's done and dusted… Hey, Marina. I've got a juicy rumour that I've heard going around the Square lately. You wanna know what it is?"

Wait, is this your plan?! Marina thought to herself. "Uh… Wait, is this the one about the 'robot' I've been hearing about as well?"

"BINGO! For those folks who haven't heard this from the ol' grapevine, people say they've been seein' someone who looks like a human! And when questioned, he says he's a robot from 12,000 years ago!" Pearl grinned, throwing up her hands excitedly. "Ain't that crazy, Marina?"

"Oh, yeah, it does sound pretty far-fetched, but stranger things have happened, I suppose," Marina nodded.

Her gaze wandered towards the square outside the studio, seeing Inklings and the occasional Octoling walking around or watching them from outside the window.

Then her breath caught as she saw someone with a group of Inklings walking around the square. He was dressed fairly normally, but that human-like black hair gave him away.

"-so, all you folks out there let us know if you got anything on-"

"Uh, Pearlie? I think that's him. Like… Right outside."

Pearl blinked, looking where Marina pointed, the cameras spinning around to see as well. Both focused on the figure with the black hair. "HUH. Uh… That doesn't look like some kind of Splatoween costume, that's for sure."

Marina noticed their producer making some gestures. "Looks like our producer wants us to go out there and talk to him live on camera!"

"SHELL YEAH! I'm down for that! Let's gooooooo~!" Pearl launched herself off of her seat and started heading out of the studio, Marina eagerly following behind her while grabbing a microphone on the way out, followed by cameras.

Fortunately, they caught the group right before they were about to enter the lobby. Most of the Inklings in the group and the 'robot' were blindsided by Off The Hook and a camera crew coming right up to them, though some of the latter started looking more excited when they realised that they were in focus.

Marina spoke up, holding the microphone forward, "excuse me, sir! We're Off The Hook, reporting for Inkopolis News. You look like the rumoured 'robot' who's been said to be going around Inkopolis."

"That's because I am," the black-haired robot smiled.

"Really? I mean, you don't look like an Inkling or any other species from Inkopolis, but you also don't look like anything I'd picture as a 'robot'," Pearl blinked.

"Yeah, you look so… Lifelike," Marina nodded.

"Well, that's the idea, really. But I suppose I should introduce myself," the robot said, a blue helmet appearing on his head in a flash of light, causing everyone around him to gasp. "My name is X. I was created by Dr. Thomas Light 12,000 years ago as his magnum opus, a lifelike robot capable of true free will, free thought and self-determination. I was meant to be sealed away for 30 years to complete ethical testing, but I was recently unearthed and activated."

Marina looked at Pearl in shock. It went without saying that the reaction was mutual. Pearl looked back at X. "Ayo, this is crazy. I have a feeling our ratings are gonna go through the roof…"

Taking a deep breath, Marina tried to continue the impromptu interview. "And you're just… Wandering around Inkopolis?"

"Why not?" X blinked. "No better way to get to know it."

"I suppose you have a point. I hope you've been enjoying your time here. Is there anything in particular you've been exposed to that you love about Inkopolis society?" Marina asked.

X seemed to ponder for a moment, before he winked, "well, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the music. The Calamari Inkantation has been a recent favourite of mine."

Marina's heart stopped for a moment. She knew that look in his eyes. It wasn't the exact same, but she knew for certain that X's soul, if he had one, had been touched by the Inkantation, just like herself, Seven and Eight. He wasn't some spy for Kamabo. "W-Well, of course, it's my favourite, too. You've got good taste."

"I mean, things aren't perfect here, but nothing is. When I see Inkopolis, I see hope for the future," X said. "I know you're excited to talk, but my friends here really want to get to their Turf War matches, so maybe we can schedule a proper interview sometime?"

"Of course! I'm sure we can do that. Besides, our time is running short here, anyway," Marina said, turning to the camera, "anything you want to say to our audience, X?"

"Keep moving forward for a better tomorrow, I guess. Learn from the people who came before you, and strive to do better, for everlasting peace," X smiled.

"I'll raise a glass to that!" Pearl laughed. "Alright, that's all we have time for, peeps! This has been Inkopolis News - don't get cooked, stay off the hook!"

When the cameras stopped, Marina turned to X, speaking in a hushed tone, "actually, I was hoping we could talk less formally in private, X? We've got some information you might be interested in… About other active robots."

X's eyes widened, but he nodded. "Uh… Yeah, that definitely sounds like something I should be hearing about. Can you give me the cliff notes?"

"We've been in contact with some folks in some underground metro via a radio we found on Mount Nantai," Pearl said. "Two Octolings who've lost their memory, and an old dude named Cap'n Craig Cuttlefish."

"I'm sorry, did you say Cap'n Cuttlefish?" Spoke the male Inkling in the group with the spiky hair. "I did not mishear that, right?"

"I'm sorry, this is kinda between us and X," Marina said. "You kids should probably go and-"

"Nooo, this is definitely our business now," spoke the girl with the wave hair. "X, we need to tell Callie and Marie about this."

"Oh, right, the Squid Sisters are Cap'n's grandkids-" Pearl then did a double take. "Wait, you guys know the Squid Sisters?!"

"I'm actually living in their apartment for the moment," X laughed sheepishly.

Marina blinked, trying to piece together why these kids would know Cap'n Cuttlefish… And then she realised. "Wait… Don't tell me all of you are part of…"

"Oh my cod I can't believe I didn't put it together until now," Marina groaned as she put her head in her hands in embarrassment. "You two are Cap'n's granddaughters and were at that 'concert' and I didn't think to consider the possibility you two were also part of the New Squidbeak Splatoon."

"For what it's worth, we do a very good job of making it look like we're just super-talented celebrities and not secret agents," Marie remarked as she put a hand on Marina's shoulder.

Marina and Pearl had been dragged off to Tentakeel Outpost discreetly by the group, and before long, Callie and Marie arrived as well once they had been alerted that Off The Hook had information on their grandfather's whereabouts.

"You know, this could be a pretty sweet hangout, but it's pretty sparse," Pearl said, crashing on the couch. "Some more furniture, a mini-fridge or two, and maybe some awnings for when it rains. Like, seriously, there's so much space that we could make use of here!"

"I like the way you think, Pearl," Callie giggled.

"I mean, that's nice and all, but… Why is HE here?!" Marina pointed at DJ Octavio, floating in the snow globe. He was one face she hoped she never had to see ever again. "I thought he was locked up in Octo Valley!"

"Hello to you too, Marina Ida, you traitor," Octavio sneered.

"He got out, brainwashed Callie and stole the Great Zapfish. Again," Artemis said dryly.

At this point Marina and Pearl had been introduced to the six Inklings. Artemis in particular had been gushing about she was such a huge fan of Off The Hook, and it was kind of adorable.

"Oh. That explains why it went missing," Pearl said. "And… You guys actually risked your lives to fix everything? Gotta say, mad respect."

"We need to get back on topic," X said. "Pearl, Marina. Where is the Captain, and what's going on where he is? Where are Agents 3 & 4?"

Marina took a deep breath. "Okay… So Pearl and I found a lost radio while taking a walk on Mount Nantai. Turns out it connected to the Captain's, and from there, we established contact. The Captain has joined forces with two Octolings who are trying to reach the surface, they're trapped deep underground in some strange underground metro run by 'Kamabo Corp', who seem to be trapping people underground to do 'tests' to see if they worthy of reaching the 'promised land'. The two Octolings have lost their memories, so Cap'n is just calling them 'Agent 7' and 'Agent 8' for now. We don't know where 3 & 4 are, Cap'n said they got separated."

"Uh… I'm Agent 7, and Hinata is Agent 8," Karlene said.

"How long has this been going on?" Marie asked.

"About a week or so?" Pearl replied.

"Oh, well, that simplifies things. Sorry, Karlene, Hinata, Liam, Koji, you four are now Agents 9, 10, 11 and 12, respectively. Grandpa's rank trumps mine."

"I should be mad, but he is the Captain and frankly it's weirdly appropriate, so I'm just gonna let that slide," Liam sighed.

Octavio suddenly laughed. "Cuttlefish, recruiting Octolings. Pull my tentacle, that's hilarious! Is he really so desperate?"

"Your Majesty, there is one other thing you may find interesting," Marina said, walking over and showing him some images on her laptop she had gotten from the Deepsea Metro - specifically of the 'Sanitised' Octarians. "Kamabo Corp has Octarians working for them. I'm not sure what's going on with them, but they don't have any life signs, and they act almost machine-like."

Octavio looked at the photos. He seemed to process this for a bit, before looking absolutely livid. "Those are MY TROOPS! What the shell did those punks do to them?! I'll dubstomp this 'Kamabo Corp' right into the ground!"

"Yeah, I knew you wouldn't like it," Marina frowned, stepping back and closing the laptop. She couldn't believe she admired this guy once upon a time. On some level, she still did, if partly out of ingrained loyalty. He did want the best for his people, but… He was just so bitter. She felt so conflicted.

"Wait, more importantly, are you guys in contact with Gramps? Like, right now?" Marie asked.

"Still got that radio," Pearl said, holding it up, and switching it on. "Yo, Cap'n, you still kick'n?"

"Darn tootin', whippersnapper. What's 'sup?" Spoke an old male voice on the other end.

"Cap'n, why didn't you tell us that your granddaughters are part of the Splatoon?" Marina asked.

"Oh, I guess I probably should've-wait, are they with you? Right now?"

"Hello, Gramps," Marie said, with a barely-constrained mixture of annoyance and relief.

"Ah. Agent 2. How're you and Agent 1 doing?"

"Just fine, Gramps! But we're worried about YOU!" Callie said. "You've missed a LOT up here! We've got, like, six new agents!"

Marina started setting up the camera feeds on her laptop linked to the Metro's camera system, giving them full view of the Cap'n and the Octoling agents, who were currently resting between tests while on the train.

"Oh-ho! You've been been on a recruitment drive? Now that's what I want to see!" Cuttlefish chuckled.

"Actually, it's more because Agents 5 & 6 couldn't properly maintain operational security, but nevermind that," Marie said. Marina noticed Artemis and Orion both wince at this.

"And also they found me," X said, "Captain, my name is X. I'm a robot created by the late human scientist Dr. Thomas Light. Agents 2, 5 and 6 found me and activated me."

"We know he can be trusted, he was instrumental in defeating Octavio a second time and rescuing the Great Zapfish again. That's another thing we'll report on once you're back up here, Gramps," Marie said.

"Huh, well I'll be! A pleasure to meet you, X," Cuttlefish said. "And I'm guessing Octavio is locked up again proper this time?"

"Go jump off a cliff, Cuttlefish," Octavio interjected.

"Yep, that's him alright."

That's when Seven spoke up over the radio. "Wait, who else is with you?"

"The whole Splatoon is here! Well, aside from you guys and 3 & 4, but yeah," Koji said. "We can see you, but I guess you guys can't see us, which is a shame."

"Um, I'm sure we'll be able to see each other in person when we get to the surface!" Eight said. "This is a bit overwhelming, but nice to meet you all, I guess!"

"Oh my cod, she has the most adorable voice!" Callie squealed.

"Maybe you can join us in Turf Wars together! We've got a couple of teams with only three members each, so you two can easily slot in! Oh, I'm Artemis, by the way," Artemis said. "With me are my baby brother Orion, my besties Karlene and Hinata, and Orion's besties, Liam and Koji!"

"Sure, we'd be down for that. We just gotta get out of this Metro, first," Seven said.

Marina shuddered in surprise when she heard Octavio chuckle darkly, and she turned towards him. "What's so funny?"

"So you've lost your memories, Colonel, Lieutenant," Octavio cackled. "Are you two a couple of additional traitors, or just forgetting where your true loyalties lie, hmm?"

Marina heard Eight squeak in fright.

Seven spoke up. "Hard to take you seriously when you're locked up in a snowglobe, Your Majesty."

Octavio just crossed his arms, grumbling to himself.

"You know who they are?" Marina asked, but she was just met with silence.

X turned to Marina, "have you got spacial coordinates for their current location? I might be able to teleport down there."

"Something is weird with space-time down there, so I don't think that'll work," Marina shook her head. "And there's multiple fields down there I think might disrupt your teleportation. If you want to get down there, you'll have to do it by foot."

"Alright, looks like we've got a rescue mission to stage," Liam said.

"That's a negative, Agent 11," Marie said. "Who knows how long such an expedition will last for. You still have your studies. I think X is best suited to the job."

"I'll have to concur with that assessment, Agents," Cuttlefish said. "Apologies for asking this of you, X, but if you can find a way down here, perhaps open up an alternative escape route…"

"I'll do my best," X said. "I'll need to be prepared for the trip, though… Marina and Pearl said you guys have been fighting robots?"

"That's right, multiple robots of human origin," Cap'n said.

Marina brought up images on screen. "These are the opponents Seven and Eight have fought so far."

"Then I'll have to be ready for anything," X said. "But at the same time, I can't just teleport out for repairs and recharging. I do have a self-repair system, but it requires energy."

Marina pondered for a moment. "I think I know someone who might be able to help with that."

"You do?" Marie blinked.

"Yeah. Let's just say I'm not the only former Octarian engineer making a name for herself in Inkopolis."

❖

Marina had taken X to a street not all that far away from Inkopolis Square, and to a specific apartment.

She knocked on the door. She had phoned ahead, so she knew she was in the right place.

The door opened, revealing an Octoling girl. She had blue eyes, and a hairstyle with three tentacles at the front resembling three angular bangs and a longer tentacle at the back as a ponytail. She wore a pink sleeveless dress, a matching pink vest, leggings, white gloves and a pair of Annaki Habaneros. "Hi, Marina! Who's this with you?"

"Hello, Ciel," Marina smiled, before gesturing to X. "This is X. I'm sure you saw the news earlier today…"

"Wait, this is him?!" Ciel said excitedly, turning to X and extending a hand. "It's truly an honour to meet you!"

"It's nice to meet you too," X said, shaking it, "Marina tells me you're a robotics specialist?"

"Yes, I am. Please, come in," Ciel said, letting them in to her apartment. "Sorry if there isn't a lot of space, I've had to dedicate some of it to my own projects. I can't afford a big apartment yet."

Marina noticed her workspace, an organised chaos of tools and parts. "You've certainly been busy."

"Thankfully some companies I contract with lend me space and equipment for projects, but otherwise I haven't been able to afford something larger than this yet," Ciel said. "Anyway, how can I help you?"

"X here needs some upgrades so he can keep himself maintained," Marina explaind.

She took the time to explain the situation and what X was doing to be doing. Ciel listened with keen interest.

"I'd love to help, but it'd take way too long without a proper workshop, parts and his blueprints," Ciel sighed.

X rubbed his chin. "I might have a solution for that, actually…"

❖

Marina was rather surprised to find that not only was Sheldon an affiliate of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, he had access to everything from Dr. Light's lab, including X's blueprints. He had moved them all up to his personal workshop for further study.

"I'd be delighted to let you work in here," Sheldon said. "There should be more than enough to get to work on what you need. In fact, I'd be happy to help with the upgrades, there are so many opportunities to work on-"

Marina ignored the rest of his rambling. "Will all of this do, Ciel?"

"Yes… Thank you so much! I'll get to work right away! In fact, I've got some ideas," Ciel said, looking over X's blueprints. "I think I can upgrade X's self-repair system significantly. As well, if you want him to last long enough on a long expedition, I think I can add four additional reserve energy cells to his system."

"Excellent! Let's start right away," Sheldon rubbed his hands together. "We need to get this done as soon as possible."

"I think this is just enough in my wheelhouse that I can help, too," Marina said. "Sure, I'll have to dash out to do Inkopolis News, but until then…"

"Sounds good. I'll be here if you need me," X said, sitting down on a nearby stool.

"Thank you, everyone. Let's not waste time," Ciel said, as they got to work.

Marina observed Ciel as they worked. Even when they had worked together, she had never seen Ciel so happy to work on a project. She felt guilty for not seeing her as often as she would've liked, once they had both settled in Inkopolis. "Ciel, you look really happy."

"It's because I'm doing something to help other people," Ciel smiled. "Back when we were working in the Octarian Army, all we could think about was working and serving. We didn't know any better. I designed the Octobot King for DJ Octavio. But in that small window where it was silent and I could think for myself… I thought I saw the Great Zapfish in pain. When the Inkantation broke the spell over me, I knew I had done something terrible."

"Oh, Ciel… It was the same for all of us. It wasn't your fault," Marina frowned.

"I know, but I still want to make up for it anyway," Ciel said. "I'm trying to develop a brand new renewable energy system, that works anywhere, rain, shine or dark. So Inkopolis won't need to rely on the Great Zapfish anymore, and the Octarians still living underground won't have to worry about running out of energy."

Marina was awestruck at hearing such a selfless goal. She chuckled, shaking her head, "wow, makes me feel kinda guilty for going into music and just using my talents for building Splatfest stages…"

Ciel giggled. "Don't say that! The things you do make you happy, and it brings joy to so many other people. Honestly, I'm just jealous you're such good friends with Pearl. You two have such good chemistry!"

Marina blushed, "thanks. Pearl has been a wonderful friend for so long. I can't even imagine what life in Inkopolis would be without her."

"So, when are you going to propose to her?"

"Ah, well-" Marina suddenly froze when she properly processed the question. "P-P-PROPOSE?! We… We aren't even…!"

Ciel was giggling non-stop. It even got snorts from Sheldon and X.

"Sorry, sorry, I couldn't help myself," Ciel said, continuing to giggle. "But you two are just so cute together!"

Marina took a deep breath, and smiled, as she kept working. "I can't say you're wrong."

❖

They managed to engineer an upgraded self-repair system and four reserve energy tanks over the course of the evening. Once installed into X's body and fully charged, Marina did some final checks. "Alright, it looks like everything's in order. You're good to go."

"I've also installed a universal adaptor into your arms so you can draw power from various sources," Ciel nodded.

Marie, who had also come along with X that morning, spoke up, "alright, just to reiterate, X - your mission is to find Gramps and the other agents."

X nodded, in full armour, "right. Should be straightforward, just a matter of finding an entrance to that underground complex…"

"I think I might have an idea, actually," Marina said. "There's an old subway entrance in the Square that's been conspicuously unused for a long time. I've noticed a few Kamabo Corp posters near it."

"How many tests are left that the two Octolings have to do, anyway?" Callie asked.

"They're pretty close to being done, they want to try and get the last few done tonight," Marina said. "But it's not that they need to finish all the tests, but rather they need to collect four 'Thangs'. They've already got three."

"What do these 'Thangs' look like?" X asked, blinking.

Marina showed everyone photos of the gathered Thangs so far. Callie's eyes widened. "Uh… Those looks like parts of a blender!"

"I don't like this at all. Tell those two to hold off on putting together whatever the shell that is until X arrives," Marie said. "X, you better double-time it, I have a really bad feeling about this."

"Right. I'm going," X said with a frown, dashing out of the workshop.

Marina nodded, as she began communicating with the trio in the Metro, "Cap'n, Seven, Eight, hold off on getting the last Thang. We've got a bad feeling about this, wait until X has gotten to you."

"I'm afraid I can't allow you to do that, miss Marina," spoke a masculine voice that Marina had never heard before. It wasn't C.Q. Cumber or the Telephone. "We've been happy to let you guide the test subjects until now, but I'm afraid what you're suggesting now is a step too far. You should've said your farewells to those three, because they'll be ascending to the 'Promised Land' very soon."

Then then connection cut out. No, worse, Marina was being blocked.

"That's really bad," Marie frowned.

Marina nodded. She really hoped X could get to them in time…

Chapter 7
Chapter 7

X was quick to find the subway entrance Marina mentioned. After a little bit of investigating, he found multiple layers of shutters, all locked and barred. A single charge shot solved all of that.

He leaped through the hole and started running. Time to go down into the belly of the beast.

He had a general idea and coordinates of his destination - the Deepsea Metro Central Station, far below. Unfortunately, getting there was another matter. It didn't help that preliminary scans indicated that the tunnels leading down made up an outright maze.

Still, he pressed on. He had to double-time it if he wanted to get down to the station in time.

Of course, the first indication that he was not wanted was the fact that other robots were starting to come out of the woodwork. Less sophisticated robots that were meant to wear him down through sheer numbers, but robots equipped with lethal weaponry, nonetheless. He wasted little time blasting his way through, he had little time to stop for anything.

The only exception, however, was something that his radar picked up - another Light Capsule. Why were these things in the strangest places where they really shouldn't be?

He put that thought aside and investigated where the signal was coming from - a cavity in the wall blocked up by debris. He used his helmet to smash right on through, breaking it up and wall-jumping up the passage into a small chamber where the capsule awaited.

The room was immediately illuminated by the hologram that appeared before him. "This capsule contains the Arm Parts of your new armour. It will enhance your buster's offensive capabilities and allow you to charge special weapons. It is a very dangerous power to possess... But I trust that you will use it for good."

"Dr. Light… You're not just some recording, are you?" X asked. "These capsules have been in suspiciously convenient places. And all of your messages, including the one used for my own capsule, were in Inkling language. You're an AI, aren't you?"

The hologram smiled warmly. "You figured it out, my boy. Yes, it's true. Before my death, I digitised my mind into an artificial intelligence, though, truth be told, I've only been active for a relatively short time, ever since the Octarians started excavating in the canyon. I'm not fond of the idea of having to so overtly aid you like this, but considering the circumstances…"

"Well, in any case, thank you," X said, stepping into the capsule. His arms were upgraded, completing the set, and giving him a brand new buster that was red and yellow. He stepped out, charging up, and testing the new third level charge shot, which was a powerful pink spiral blast. "This'll do nicely."

"That should be all the parts for the armour, but please, be careful. Something sinister is very much afoot in the Metro," Dr. Light warned. "Find them, and get them out. We'll meet again on the way back up."

X nodded, jumping down the shaft and wasting no time as he started dashing. He got a message from Marina - someone was blocking out their communications line to the trio in the Metro, which was a really bad sign, to put it mildly. There was simply no time to waste.

❖

"So that's the situation," Marie said. "It's still a bad idea to send all of you down there at once, since X is reporting encountering robots with lethal weaponry and we don't have respawn points active down there, but we need for you to all be here and on high alert while still getting some rest in the meantime. We don't know when you'll be needed, but we really should have you guys on hand just in case, because we really don't know what might happen. Ideally, X will get everyone out safe and sound, without any problems."

Artemis was more than a little shocked that they had gotten all of this set up so quickly - apparently Pearl was ridiculously rich and had enough strings to pull, because the six teenage agents now all of a sudden were staying the night at Tentakeel Outpost, which itself was now functionally the New Squidbeak Splatoon's makeshift barracks. The place now had a lot more furniture, a big translucent plastic awning and barriers covering the cabin area to shield against the elements, and some bunk beds. All the agents were in their Hero Suits.

"So basically we're waiting and hoping X gets to the Metro in time to stop the Captain and the Octoling agents from getting blended," Liam frowned. "All I can say is… Yikes."

"Chill, guys, I'm sure he'll get there in time! Let's forget about that for the moment, because we're basically having a slumber party!" Pearl grinned, crashing on one of the new couches.

"Pearl, aren't you a little too old for slumber parties? Like… You're 21, you're the oldest of any of us," Koji said.

"Hey, just because I'm an adult doesn't mean I ain't a child at heart!" Pearl said.

"I know things are tense, but Pearl's right, let's settle down and relax," Callie said. She and Marina were making hot chocolates for everyone.

Artemis decided to step out towards the larger area of the outpost where all the kettles were, and started stretching. After absorbing something so heavy to take in, she felt she needed a little bit of time to herself.

She looked up to the skies, seeing the vibrant, twinkling sea of stars, no longer hidden by the light pollution of Inkopolis. It was something she had dearly missed ever since she left home.

"Artemis? Are you okay?"

Artemis froze up in the middle of a stretch, realising it was Marina, coming over to her with a mug of hot chocolate. She stopped her stretch, accepting the mug. "Yeah, I'm okay, why?"

"You look like you're full of nervous energy," Marina said. "Not that I blame you at all…"

"Nooo, I'm totally fine! Really!" Artemis said, with the best grin she could fake. She wilted when Marina gave her a look that told her that she really was not convinced. "Is it that obvious?"

Marina brought her over to one of the unoccupied couches to sit down. "You still can't get what's happening out of your mind, huh?"

"How can I? Three people are in danger of getting literally blended and I'm just sitting here drinking hot chocolate and shooting the breeze," Artemis said, taking a sip. "I really wish I could do something, but I know it's way too risky for anyone other than X right now. And I hate it so, so much. Part of me says I shouldn't be caring so much about a few people I've barely even talked to over a radio, but I can't not care!"

"That's because you're an empathetic person who values the well-being of other people," Marina smiled, putting a hand on Artemis' free hand. "You worry for them because you care. You saved Inkopolis because you care. I know caring is painful sometimes, but take it from someone who only a couple of years ago was literally incapable of caring because of Octavio's brainwashing - I don't want to go back to not being able to care ever again."

"Y-Yeah, I don't want to stop caring, either," Artemis blushed a little. The fact that Marina was wearing more of a casual hip-hop style outfit did not go unnoticed, and she looked really good in it. "Sorry, I'm still kinda reeling from the fact that I'm talking to you. I'm used to being around Marie and Callie is super approachable, but…"

"I get it, you're still in the 'fan' mindset," Marina giggled. "I totally get it, I felt the same way when first meeting the Squid Sisters. But fans or not, it's so nice to meet new people and make new friends. I'm glad I met all of you."

"I'll toast to that!" Pearl grinned, crashing on the couch next to them. She also had her own casual hip-hop outfit, which was somehow even more ostentatious than her stage one. She was still cute in her own way, and Artemis did like her lively attitude. "I'm sure you'll be thinking of us as just good friends in no time."

"Arti's got a crush on Marina, just saying," Hinata called out to them, sparking some laughter and snorting among the other agents.

"LIES AND SLANDER!" Artemis snapped back, more flustered than angry, her face beet red. She looked down into her drink, biting her lower lip. "I… I think you two are just amazing, okay? And Marina… You're super pretty."

"Aw, thanks," Marina smiled, blushing a little as well but seemingly taking the whole thing in stride.

"Hey, no shame in finding my girl hot as shell," Pearl grinned. "I think she's hot, too. Chest don't lie, and neither do her hips! Two words: Dump truck."

"PEARLIE!" Marina said, now her turn to be utterly flushed and putting her head in her hands in sheer embarrassment.

Artemis was not much better, if mostly because she was desperately trying not to think about Marina's butt. And failing miserably. Now that she thought about it, the Octoling girls she had fought in the Canyon were kinda cute, and while she had only seen Eight on a screen, she was also super cute and had an enviable figure. Oh, geez, do I have a thing for Octoling girls?

She noticed Liam and Koji were having similar difficulties, if their flushed faces were of any indication.

"Sorry, but you're way too modest, if you're not gonna brag about how sexy you are I might as well!" Pearl chuckled.

Marina's only response was to put down her mug and change into octopus form, curling up in a blushing mess. Artemis giggled, putting down her mug as well and hugging her. "Come on, Marina, you're adorable!"

"Alright, leave her alone, you two, she'll be a puddle of ink at this rate," Karlene chuckled, shaking her head.

Artemis giggled, letting go of Marina and picking up her mug again. "Sitting under the stars like this reminds me of when Dad used to take me and Ori out camping into the wilderness around our hometown."

"Oh, you two aren't from Inkopolis?" Pearl asked, leaning forward inquisitively.

"They're country bumpkins," Liam said with a sorta-joking tone before speaking more casually, "their dad's a hunter and a ranger. Their hometown is… Spirulida County, right?"

"Sounds dope. Maybe we should go there on vacation or something," Pearl said. "You guys gotta have your semester breaks at some point, right?"

"Oooh, that'd be fun!" Callie grinned.

"Maybe after the two of us actually go back to Calamari County together this time." Marie said dryly. "You owe me for making me wait hours at the platform for you."

"Ah, right, you actually did that? Sorry, sorry," Callie laughed sheepishly, scratching her chin.

"Would you be alright with that, Bro? I know you like living in Inkopolis a bit more…" Artemis said.

Orion smiled softly, taking a sip of his drink, "it's okay, Sis. Spirulida's my home too, and I kinda miss it. Mom and Dad are gonna be surprised if we bring everyone else here with us, though."

"No kidding," Artemis chuckled. She looked up to the stars once more, trying to keep her mind calm. Even after all of this, a part of her still worried. Come on, X, we're counting on you…

❖

The fact that X was now encountering 'Sanitised' Octarians and finding what looked like offices was a good clue that he was on the right track and getting close. He wasn't stopping for anything right now.

Well, again, mostly. There was one thing that drew his attention - the sounds of battle coming from some kind of large cafeteria room. When he went to investigate, he was more than a little astonished.

Two Inklings were in the middle of a pitched battle against a much larger robot, comprised of a single red core eye with a larger yellow malleable body. X recognized it from the combat data he had inherited from his older brothers - the Yellow Devil, though it was hard to determine which version it was. The Inklings he recognized as Ethan and Ayane - Agents 3 & 4, using their Hero Roller and Hero Charger, respectively, and each of them had a Hero Shot as a backup weapon. He could finish this quickly, and get moving again.

X charged up his buster, and fired at the Devil, ripping through its yellow body and damaging the eye. The huge robot refocused on him as it reformed, the eye disappearing into the goop as it broke apart into dozens of blocks that flew right at him, forcing him to dash and dodge quickly.

His sensors picked up on the core in one of the blocks, and he fired another charged shot. Unfortunately, it moved in midair to avoid. "Damn, it's not gonna let me do that so easily…"

"BOOYAH!" Ethan suddenly intercepted the block, smashing it with his Roller in a horizontal swing. The block fell apart, the core sent flying right into a wall, damaging it more as it made unintelligible sounds.

As it rose back into the air, Ayane shot it down with her Charger, knocking it back into the wall. "Oh, no you don't… You stay right there."

X charged up another shot, getting right into point-blank range and unleashing a fully charged blast that ripped the core to shreds.

The rest of the body collapsed into inert goop, without a core to control it.

"SHELL YEAH! That was AWESOME! I wasn't sure how we were gonna end that quickly, but man…" Ethan grinned. He was darker-skinned, and had a topknot and orange eyes. "Thanks for the save, Mister…?"

"X," the robot said, turning to them, "it's good that I found you, you two were unaccounted for. Ethan and Ayane, Agents 3 & 4? 1 & 2 sent me. Do you know the way to the Central Station?"

"I freaking wish," Ethan said. "We were wandering around in here for about a week!"

"How can we really trust you?" Ayane asked, somewhat more warily, Charger raised. She had blue eyes, 'hippie' hair and light skin. That's when X noticed she had a unique-looking CQ-80 on her belt. "You're too trusting, Agent 3. For all we know he could be working for Kamabo or the Octarians-"

"I can't waste time trying to convince you," X said, immediately heading back towards the coordinates. "Follow me if you want, but the Captain is in imminent danger!"

"Well, he's the only possible lead we have," Ethan said, dashing after him, "come on, Agent 4!"

"You better hope you're not messing with us, otherwise I'm gonna mess you up so bad," Ayane grumbled, as she dashed after them as well.

❖

"Are you ready to visit the promised land? Are you [ERROR] ready to ascend to the higher plane? Are you ready to join something bigger than yourself?" The telephone asked.

With all the 'Thangs' collected, Eight couldn't ignore the sinking feeling deep in her stomach. Somehow desperation to escape had made her ignore her doubts up until now, but seeing all the parts together made her realise that she couldn't ignore them any longer - the 'Thangs' were parts of a blender. This wasn't some transportation device.

She glanced to her side. Seven's expression exposed similar doubts.

She looked back at the telephone. "Be honest… What is the 'promised land'?"

"Hang on, you gonna [ERROR] out on me? Fo' shizzle?" The phone asked.

"Not until you guarantee that blender won't turn us into bloody paste," Seven snapped.

"Aw, dang, dawg, don't be like that… Oh well. Not like you cats got a choice."

Eight heard the sounds behind her too late, as she was knocked down, and pinned by someone from behind. She looked at Seven, who was also pinned down… By Quick Man, who grinned. "Sorry, kid, but orders are orders!"

"Do not try to resist," warned a familiar voice from the person pinning down Eight - Shadow Man. "I apologise, but as Quick Man says, we must follow orders."

The telephone began assembling the blender, taking position on top of the lid as it began playing dissonantly celebratory music.

"Unhand me, you robotic brutes!" Cuttlefish said, as he was dragged over by his arms, courtesy of Air Man and Snake Man. As the bottom of the blender opened up, he was tossed inside, and both Eight and Seven were thrown in as well, the door closing behind them before they could do anything.

"Okay, we finally managed to bypass the-OH NO!" Marina's voice came in over the radio.

"Marina! They're gonna get smoothied! YOU GOTTA DO SOMETHING!" Pearl panicked.

The platform they were on rose up into the main body of the blender itself, and the 'roof' went back up, rotating around so the blades faced downwards… Towards them. "INGREDIENT ACQUISITION COMPLETE... REFORMATTING MATTER..."

"Let us out of here, you stupid phone!" Cuttlefish said, banging his fists on the plastic.

"This can't be how it ends!" Seven said in a panic, also trying to break through.

"I'm... trying... None of my hacks are working... I can't get in! I'm going to activate the distress signal on Eight's CQ-80. Cross your fingers!" Marina said. "Come on, please…!"

Eight closed her eyes, waiting for the end.

The sound of glass shattering above made her open her eyes again. A surge of energy ripped through the top of the blender, utterly destroying it, leaving only a damaged telephone crashing to the floor as the robots leaped back to avoid the blast and shrapnel. Two bodies slammed into the remainder of the blender, knocking it over, allowing the trio to scramble free.

"Are you three alright?" Asked a figure in white & blue armour standing in front of them.

Eight looked him over. He was a robot, alright, but he looked distinct from the others she had fought. "Are you… X?"

X nodded. "It's a good thing we got that distress signal."

"It's a good thing you guys came through for us, X," Marina said.

"BOOYAH! Man, that was way too close..." Pearl sighed.

"We made it in the nick of time!" Grinned an Inkling boy who stepped up, who Eight realised was Agent 3. "Hey, Agent 4, what does that make us?"

"Not gonna dignify that with a response," spoke an Inkling girl who Eight identified as Agent 4. "We're not out of the woods yet, still got those four to deal with."

Quick Man grinned, stepping towards them, "well, well, if it isn't Mega Man! It's been ages. I gotta say, I like the new look, better than what Quint had."

"I think you're mistaking me for my older brother," X said calmly. "My name is X. I am Dr. Light's final creation. Leave. Now. I have no interest in fighting any of you, but if I must, I'll take you all down if it means protecting my friends."

"The same sentimental tripe as always. You can't take on four of us at once," Air Man cackled.

"You could send a hundred of you at once and it wouldn't make a difference," X said, stepping forward. "I won't warn you again. Leave now, and don't bother us again."

"You're bluffing," Snake Man sneered, prepared to strike.

"No, it's not a bluff," Shadow Man said, more wary. "He has a confidence I've rarely seen from Mega Man."

"Let's see how confident he is when we show off what we can really do!" Quick Man laughed, "SPEED GEAR!"

Quick Man started moving at incredible speeds, laughing maniacally as he began circling around X, trying to confuse and misdirect him, pulling out a new big boomerang as a blade, which he swung at X from the right.

X stopped the blade by just grabbing his arm. "Was that supposed to be impressive? "

Quick Man's eyes widened, as he struggled to move his arm. "H-How did you…?!"

"That's just the same tactic you used on Mega Man the first time, except faster," X said nonchalantly as he ripped the boomerang from his fingers and tossed him right into Shadow Man, who had been trying to sneak up on him. "And my radar can detect you, Shadow Man, even when you're not in my sights!"

"Who needs speed when you've got power? POWER GEAR!" Air Man snapped.

"POWER GEAR!" Snake Man also activated his, transforming into a giant robotic serpent. "I'll tear you limb from limb!"

"Oh, that's cute,"Agent 4 said, suddenly pulling out a Sting Ray. "3, let's do this."

"You got it!" Agent 3 grinned, as he immediately started flinging ink and moving in towards the giant snake.

"Wait, they get their own specials?! That's not fair!" Seven grumbled.

Eight was just looking on in awe as the two Inklings attacked. Despite an intense gale coming her way, Agent 4 just unleashed the Sting Ray, which cut through the wind and struck Air Man's fans, sending him crashing back and doing heavy damage, putting him out of commission. And Agent 3 dodged a couple of lunges from the giant snake before he pulled out an Ultra Stamp, smashing his opponent into the ground repeatedly until the larger body broke down and exposed Snake Man, who he smashed into the ground some more until the robot was also down for the count. No wonder her former superiors had sent her and Seven to fight these two, they were truly amazing.

"Quick Man… We have to retreat. We can't win like this," Shadow Man cautioned, as he and Quick Man stood up.

Quick Man snarled, pointing at them furiously. "You… YOU INSIGNIFICANT #@^&S! THIS IS NOT OVER!"

The pair immediately disappeared into a cloud of smoke created by Shadow Man, which quickly faded, leaving nothing in its place.

"Geez, language," Agent 4 snorted.

X went to do something with the two remaining robotic bodies that Eight honestly couldn't figure out, muttering something along the lines of "these might come in handy."

"THAT WAS AWESOME!" Artemis squealed happily. "You two really are as badass as I've heard!"

"Agent 3, Agent 4, it's good to see you both safe… And thank you for saving us," Cuttlefish said. "Same goes for you, X. It's good to meet you in person."

"No worries, Cap! We were worried about you!" Agent 3 grinned. "I guess you joined forces with those two Octolings from earlier?"

That snapped Eight out of her stupor, and she bowed politely. "I'm Agent 8. This is Agent 7. I apologise for attacking you before all of this… Even if we don't really remember it."

"Water under the bridge, we're all on the same side now," Agent 4 said. "X, get the junior agents outta here. We'll secure the area so you can come back and help get the Cap'n out as well."

"Hold on, Agent 4, that CQ-80… I think that might be an employee model," Marina said. "Mind if I access it?"

"Sure, go ahead," Ayane shrugged.

"How did you manage to regain contact, Marina?" X asked.

"Had some outside help, so to speak," Marina replied. "Let's see here… Jackpot! I think these are blueprints to the entire Kamabo test facility! I've got a faster route to the surface that you guys can use, just head up through that hole up there that was just made."

"That's great!" Eight smiled. "We can finally get up to the surface!"

"Shame we only got that sword-thing for a weapon, and Eight doesn't know how to unlock it," Seven frowned.

"I might be able to fix that," X said, extending a hand to Eight, "may I?"

Eight nodded, handing the weapon to him. X examined it for a bit, and then smiled. "Oh, I see what it is. You gotta hold down the button and then spin it clockwise a couple of times, like this, see?"

After demonstrating to her, the 'blade' popped out, and he handed it to her. Eight performed a few experimental swings. "It… It actually works! Thank you, X! I almost lost hope, there. But I won't let go of it again!"

"By the way, got this for ya, Seven, I don't need it," Agent 3 said, tossing an Octo Shot can to Seven. "Found this on the way here. I don't need it nearly as much as you do."

"Yeah, this'll do," Seven said, pulling out the weapon. "Thanks a bunch."

"Alright, you two, let's go," X said, launching himself up to the hole. Seven followed suit with a super-jump.

Eight took a deep breath, and followed. She suspected the climb up to the surface wasn't going to be as easy as she hoped, but it didn't matter. She could use her blade, and she had hope again. That's all that mattered.

Chapter 8
A/N: Just to note, I edited some bits of the previous chapter and the Intermissions to include some important information I probably should've added previously that might be important to keep in mind with this chapter.

Chapter 8

As Seven had figured, the route provided by Marina was not necessarily easy, even with X taking point. They had stirred up the hive, and the trio were being swarmed by sanitised Octarians.

They had taken a detour to raid the nearby offices for more of the healing sprays, which fortunately they managed to procure a good supply of. Now the only thing to do was to make their way up.

Fortunately, their early procurement of weapons and X's assistance allowed them to make significantly faster progress than they would've otherwise - Seven realised that the first leg of the journey would've required stealth and to scrounge around to find weapons. Seven noticed this route took them upwards in a spiral path in a massive chamber with windows indicating the exterior was underwater. Whatever was in the middle was being concealed by a massive apparatus of catwalks and machines working on something.

The first two large rooms on the way up were easy enough, and were mostly just more offices and administrative areas. Seven wasn't sure who or what exactly worked here… And he was not remotely in the mood to find out.

However, the third, big spherical chamber they arrived in had a completely different atmosphere. As they walked the main catwalk to the other side, they stared in awe at the massive pools of molten metal above, held up by artificial anti-gravity systems, and from them floated down large mechanical components of various types.

"This… This is some kind of factory," X frowned. "Is this where all the robots are being constructed from?"

"Some of these parts are too large for that," Eight observed. "Kamabo are building something else much larger as well."

"I don't want to find out what it is, so let's keep moving," Seven said. Something about all of this gave him a massive sense of foreboding.

At the end of the catwalk, after splatting some more Octarians, they found a large blue capsule. Inside, was a blue hologram of an old man, neither Inkling nor Octoling. "There you are. I have been waiting for you."

"Do you have something else for me, Dr. Light?" X asked, blinking.

"Actually, no," the hologram said, looking at the two Octolings. "I have something in mind for them. The road ahead is going to be quite dangerous, and they will need the necessary tools for the job. Please, step inside the capsule."

X nodded to them. "He's not with Kamabo. We can trust him."

"I'll go in first," Seven volunteered, stepping inside the capsule. He didn't want something to happen to Eight if this was some kind of trap. His apprehension quickly melted when a new set of armour suddenly appeared on his body in a flash of light, along with a protective helmet - it resembled the 'Null Armour' sometimes provided by the test chambers, except without the Kamabo branding. His weapon was also upgraded, adding some extra electronics and some kind of energy-based component to the barrel. "What the…?!"

"This new armour will help protect you against all kinds of weapons your adversaries will employ against you," the Light hologram explained. "As well, I have taken the liberty of upgrading your Octo Shot to an 'Octo Buster'. It has similar functionality to X's own buster, using your ink as fuel to fire off energy-ink hybrid shots. It also retains its original functionality as a separate fire mode."

"Well, dang! Thanks a ton, Doc," Seven said, stepping out as he looked at himself, legitimately delighted.

Eight entered the capsule as well, and in a flash, she stepped out with a new set of armour as well, and her weapon was upgraded into something more refined. Dr. Light explained, "your weapon is now a proper 'Octo Saber', using energy as well as ink. It also has a less lethal 'blunt ink' mode that you can easily switch to."

"Thank you very much, Dr. Light," Eight bowed to him politely.

"You're quite welcome, you two," Dr. Light smiled.

"Uh, by the way, Doc, those robots from before were using some kind of special power mode or some such, something about 'Gears'," Seven said, "know anything about that?"

"Those robots were created by my former colleague, Dr. Albert Wily, who became evil and tried to take over the world… Over a dozen times, I might add," Dr. Light frowned. "The 'Double Gear' system was one of his proudest achievements, a component capable of overclocking a robot's systems to allow for either increased speed or power… Or even both, if necessary. I believe he installed it into all of his Robot Masters and war machines when he returned to the concept, so it's not a surprise that they'd have their own gears. Be prepared. My biggest concern is how Kamabo got their hands on so much of Wily's old robotics…"

Eight nodded, "we'll keep that in mind, thank you, Doctor."

"But once you all evacuate, I suggest you destroy this place as soon as you can," the hologram frowned. "I still haven't deciphered what is going on here, but something terrible is being constructed in this place. The sooner you can halt that construction, the better."

The capsule then teleported out, leaving Seven with a feeling of pure dread.

"You heard him, let's go," X said, as he got moving.

"R-Right," Seven said, as he and Eight followed.

❖

Ayane had made sure both defeated robots left behind were permanently out of commission as she and Ethan waited for the all clear to start heading up. "Marina, how're they doing?"

"They're doing pretty well. Got some upgrades as well, they should be ready to handle whatever's gonna be thrown their way," Marina said. "The path should be clear up to a point, I think you're ready to start moving up."

"Okay, sweet," Ethan grinned, turning to the Cap'n. "Cap'n, you alright to follow us up top?"

"Ready as I'll ever be, I suppose," Cap'n Cuttlefish said, taking Ethan's hand.

"Good, I want to be out of this place as soon as possible," Ayane said, her cape trailing behind her as he walked over to them. She had thought Ethan's suggestion of getting matching capes was a dumb idea at first, but now it had rather grown on her.

"Blah blah... Y... you..." The broken Telephone spluttered. Ayane paid it little mind, it had seemingly been trying to say something for a while now, and besides, it was a broken telephone, not like it could be of any real threat.

A set of footsteps echoed through the station.

Ayane and Ethan immediately spun around, weapons ready.

Stepping into the light was a red robot with a blonde ponytail and a blue gemstone on his helmet. Covering much of his head was a strange green ooze, reflected by swirling green eyes. An unnerving, psychotic smirk was on his face.

"He's just one guy, we can take him if we blast him with our specials right now," Ethan whispered to Ayane.

"No, we need to run," Ayane hissed back. This robot gave her a bad feeling she couldn't properly describe. "Grab the Cap'n, and get outta here."

"YOU! You measly scrap of seafood! YOU'LL PAY FOR THIS!" The Telephone spluttered, the same green goop starting to leak out of it.

Ethan began turning towards it, but suddenly it launched some of that goop at him, causing it to latch onto the right side of his face. "GAH!"

"ETHAN!" Ayane stepped towards him, but Ethan shoved the Cap'n to her. "Ethan?!"

"A-Ayane… Run…! Before I lose control…!" Ethan groaned, his right eye changing into the same green spiral.

"NO! I'm not leaving you b-"

That distraction was enough for the red robot to charge her with shocking speed and pin her to the floor by the neck, laughing manically.

Cap'n Cuttlefish was trying to force the red robot off of her, but he was much too weak, and he was shoved aside. Ayane grit her teeth, grabbed her Hero Shot, and started blasting the red robot in the face with all of the ink she had.

"You superfluous nobodies… I suppose you'll be useful in some way," the Telephone said, as it fired another burst of green goop at Ayane, this time.

She could only watch helplessly as it latched onto her as well. She could feel it leaking into her mind, invading her very thoughts. Despite her best efforts…

Suddenly, her mind was clear. She discarded all irrelevant thoughts as the robot let go of her. She stood up, and nodded to Ethan, who nodded back, now properly in the fold.

They had a couple of runaway test subjects to capture.

❖

"WHY WERE THERE SO MANY LASERS?!" Seven panted, resting at the end of the gauntlet that was the main security nexus. He was trying to let out all of the stress from that terrifying experience. "Seriously, what madman designed this insane deathtrap?!"

"My life flashed before my eyes a few times there," Eight winced, resting against a wall.

"Well, I've disabled the entire security setup, so 3 and 4 will have no trouble getting through," X sighed, as he did so via a nearby terminal.

"Speaking of them… We've got a problem," Marina said. "Something happened down there, and, well, now… Take a look for yourselves. I got an image from right before their communications cut out."

Seven took a look at his CQ-08. It showed camera footage of 3 and 4, both with strange goop on their heads, restraining Cap'n Cuttlefish, accompanied by a strange red robot who was carrying the broken Telephone. "Oooooh that's not good."

"X… Do you recognise that robot at all?" Eight asked.

"No… That's a new one," X frowned. "Be ready. I suspect they'll try to intercept us on the way up. I think the Telephone is controlling 3 and 4 somehow using that goopy substance."

"Oh, great, more problems," Seven said. "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it, I guess."

They continued on into the next big chamber, where there was a holding chamber for an energy core. But that wasn't their immediate problem.

Waiting for them, all assembled, were roughly fifty humanoid robots. At the head of the pack was Quick Man, who grinned. "Sorry, lady and gentlemen, but I'm afraid this is as far as you go!"

"Ooooooh boy this could be some real trouble," Pearl gulped.

"One last warning. Get out of our way," X warned, his armour colours suddenly shifting to cream and dark blue. "Seven, Eight, grab a railing."

Seven did not think twice, and apparently neither did Eight, as they both grabbed nearby railings. X began to charge up his buster.

One of the robots behind Quick Man blinked. "Uh… Quick Man, isn't that Air Man's weapo-"

X cut him off by unleashing a powerful hurricane from his buster. While some of the robots managed to avoid the incoming storm, most of them got completely blown away, carried off by the hurricane. He then went right into the fray, dealing with the brunt of the enemy assault.

Seven knew this was as good a chance he'd get at a fair fight, and made use of it, letting go and dashing forward with his Octo Buster.

Eight was quick to follow his lead, Octo Saber brandished and ready, and she was immediately in combat with a robot brandishing a huge sword of his own.

"You think you little punks can take us on?!" Charging right at Seven was a robot who could best be described as a walking arsenal, who even had tank treads for feet. He fired a pair of bombs from his arms at an arc, but Seven was quick to evade, spraying the ground and moving quickly in octopus form. The moment he returned to bipedal form, he started charging his weapon.

"Stay still and lemme hit you!" The robot snapped, firing off missiles from his shoulders, followed by a couple of rockets from his head.

"Maybe having all that weaponry exposed isn't a good idea," Seven remarked, firing off a charged shot that easily ripped through the rockets. Noting that the shoulder missiles were homing, he was quick to shoot them down.

"What the heck are you-" The robot's response was quickly interrupted by the shot slamming into the cannon on his head. The energy shot alone destroyed the cannon, but the ink from it also splashed onto the shoulders. He snarled, and tried to load and fire more missiles, but the missiles instead went off immediately, blowing his shoulders and arms clean off. "GAAAAAAH!"

All it took was another charged shot for Seven to put the poor fool out of his misery.

"Don't let that get to your head, Napalm Man had more bark than bite!" Racing towards Seven was a robot who looked like some kind of car, transforming into a bipedal form and unleashing a wheel of fire that spun across the ground. "Now, Turbo Man's got the stuff to really set your world aflame! I'll run rings around you!"

"Yikes!" Seven dived out of the way of the flames, charging up another shot. Turbo Man was racing around him, attacking from different directions, forcing him to dodge rather than attack. But he had an idea. Seven began spraying ink all over the place… And especially in front of Turbo Man. "Small problem with wheels, though - I bet they don't have much traction on ink!"

As predicted, Turbo Man spun out of control, crashing right into a wall. As he changed forms to get upright again, Seven fired another charged shot right at his midsection, which he figured was a weak point, tearing him in half.

"Well, looks like the little octopus has a new toy!" Quick Man remarked, walking up to him. "Those two were small time compared to me. And this time, I'm playing for keeps!"

Seven smirked, pulling the boomerang he had taken as a trophy off his back. "Don't get too cocky, otherwise I might just take another one of these to hang on my wall!"

That seemed to get a rise out of Quick Man, who snarled, drawing a new large boomerang. "Okay, no more playing around. I'm going to make you realise how much of a fluke your first victory was! SPEED GEAR!"

Quick Man now started moving at speeds that Seven could barely keep up with, laughing as he began to close in on his prey.

Seven winced as incoming attacks started cutting into his armour. But he knew he couldn't give in to fear, otherwise he might as well give up. But he also knew that Quick Man was cocky. He had an idea.

He dashed forward, Octo Buster in one hand, charging it up, and the boomerang in the other. He waited for his moment.

"Don't you think you can run from me!" Quick Man laughed, as he suddenly appeared in front of him, swinging his blade down at him.

Seven raised his own boomerang, blocking it, and fired a charged shot right into Quick Man's chest, shattering his chest armour as he slid under his legs.

"Oh, you cheeky little…!" Quick Man immediately turned around, moving to strike again.

This time, he was too slow.

Seven, in one quick move just as Quick Man had turned around, had slammed one of the sharp points of the boomerang right into the robot's exposed core.

"Ugh… I underestimated you again. Well… played…" Quick Man said, as he fell back, lifeless.

"You better not call that a fluke if we ever meet again," Seven panted, as he stood up. "Three down… So many more to go…"

❖

Eight advanced, another robot cleaved in half at her feet. She had already gone through five this time.

The Octo Saber felt so right in her hands - there was no doubt she had practised with a blade for countless hours growing up. It wasn't merely because her education was in the Octarian Army, either. Mastery of ink-based blades in turf wars was something her family had prided themselves upon. Day after day she would practice at her mother's insistence.

The Great Turf War had done damage to her family's pride. And her mother had desired restoration.

"Why do you hesitate, my dear?" Her mother asked, her steely gaze piercing through her. "You're not going to get any better if you don't fight back."

She panted, stepping off of the respawn point on her side of the dojo. "Mother… I don't want to hurt anyone. Not even you."

Her mother continued staring at her, with little sympathy. "It matters little whether you wish to hurt me or anyone else. You will be forced to fight eventually, as per our Emperor's plan. You will be forced to take lives. My pain is but a small price to pay for you to be able to fight and survive. I am but a mere grindstone for you to sharpen your blade upon. Come at me again. More seriously, this time."

"Y-Yes, Mother."

Even before the Inkantation touched her soul, as a little girl Eight had never desired to hurt anyone. But the demands of her family and her society to avenge their humiliation was… Suffocating. And as an only child, she had nobody else to share the burden with.

So she imagined that there was someone. A brother or a sister who could carry that burden for her.

At first that person was just an imaginary friend who she imagined was taking her place when they needed to. That way she could live up to the expectations of her parents and the people around her. That way, she was a model Octarian soldier.

It was only when she finally left the academy and took up her first position and rank was when she realised her 'sibling' had become a full-blown split personality. And at that point, she was too reliant on 'her'.

She took a deep breath as she made a beeline for her office. Staff meetings were so stressful. So many eyes, judging her. The Colonel could handle it, but it was just so emotionally draining afterwards.

Then she realised that someone was waiting outside her office, just around the corner. She had not expected visitors right after the meeting. Suspicious.

The Colonel took over, stepping out, blade whipping out her blade and stopping right before the interloper's neck. "I was not expecting visitors. Explain yourself."

"Whoa, geez!" The male Octoling boy winced as he froze up, seeing the blade. He was the same age as her. "I heard your butt was hard as a clam, but…"

She panicked, and took over from her 'sibling', retracting her blade, bowing as she apologised, "AH! I'm sorry! I'm under a lot of stress right now and acted without thinking!"

"It's alright, I totally get it," the boy chuckled, "I'm surprised nobody told you. I was assigned as your assistant and bodyguard. Um… Guess we should go inside. I can make you some tea, if you'd like."

"That would be wonderful, thank you," she said with a relived sigh, opening her office door, and letting him in, closing the door behind them as she went right to her desk.

"What was all that about, anyway? You seemed like a completely different person a moment ago," the boy said, as he went to start making the tea.

"It's… Complicated. Again, I'm so sorry about the scare, I don't know what I was thinking, it's not like there's spies crawling around," she said, sitting down. "I don't believe I got your name…?"

"Oh, right!" He immediately stood to attention, saluting, "reporting for duty, ma'am! I'm Lieutenant A-"

"Your eyes are much less clouded than they were before, even without the lioness unleashed."

Her attention was drawn by Shadow Man, standing several feet away and watching her like a hawk. "Not once has your other self emerged. How curious."

"I don't need her. Not right now," Eight said, steeling herself. "Freedom is within my sights, and I will not allow anyone or anything to stop me now. Will you not stand aside?"

"My programming dictates that I cannot do so. I must stop you from escaping," Shadow Man said as he performed multiple hand signals. "Power Gear!"

The world went black around Eight. All she could see was the floor in an immediate single-meter radius around her.

She charged her saber, and listened to the sounds of footsteps close by, as they circled around her, before moving in.

A quick flash of blades. Copies cut down in an instant, but others successfully hitting their mark, damaging her armour. She knew her true opponent was among the footsteps, but she couldn't simply guess, otherwise he'd wear her down. But how could she figure out who was the real one?

You already know the answer to that, Princess. The clones are ephemeral. They can't truly mimic the real thing.

She took a deep breath, and focused. The Colonel was right. The clones had lighter footsteps, but the real Shadow Man was heavier. It was hard to make out, but…

As the enemies closed in, she suddenly spun towards the heavier footsteps and struck.

"GRAAAAAAAAAHHHH!"

Eight winced as she felt the blade create a gash across her shoulder.

But as the darkness faded, her adversary was much worse for wear. Her strike had went right through a chunk of his torso, and had taken off an arm.

"You saw through my illusion," he groaned, as he fell. "You truly are a worthy foe…"

By all indications, he was completely deactivated. Besides, more robots began to approach her. She had little time to think about it. Keep moving on, and survive.

❖

"How are we getting our butts kicked by one robot?!" Metal Man exclaimed. Only ten of their number remained, and X had ripped his way through over half of the original count at this point.

Gyro Man's rotors spun up, "there's still ten of us left! If we work together, we can-"

"I kept warning you, and you didn't listen," X said, shaking his head. "I'm just tired of this. I should be angry, but I'm just disappointed."

"You… You're mocking us! Don't you dare pity us!" Junk Man grit his teeth.

"We'll make you pay for underestimating us!" Spark Man agreed.

X sighed, and charged up a Flash Bomb, launching it as a localised flash-bang grenade. It had the desired effect, disrupting their senses. He then switched to Slash Claw, and dashed towards them as he charged.

Search Man recovered first. "Wait, fellas, he's using Slash Man's weapon, get outta the-"

It was too late. All ten were bisected in one fell swoop.

X sighed, watching the bodies fall, before he collected their weapon data. What a waste.

He turned to check on the two Ocotlings. Much to his relief, they had defeated the Robot Masters that had gone after them, and their armour had protected them from the worst of incoming damage, using the sprays to heal up anything that had gotten through. "You're both okay, thank goodness. I wish I could've kept more of an eye on you, but…"

"It was tough, but our upgraded weapons and armour really came through for us," Seven grinned.

Eight nodded, "I doubt the two of us could've fought all of them at the same time. It was scary, but you defeating most of them really balanced things out."

"Sorry to interrupt, but you guys need to get started on releasing the energy core in this chamber," Marina said. "Ahead of you is an elevator that needs to be powered by the core, you won't be able to reach the surface without it."

X performed an analysis, as he worked a nearby terminal. "That's gonna be tricky. We'll need to completely unlock the core housing, and that requires removing a bunch of data posts plugged into it."

"This equipper pad over here might help," Seven nodded, going over to a black pad, and suddenly he was equipped with an Inkjet. "Must be for maintenance…"

"Right, let's get to work," Eight said, also equipping an Inkjet.

❖

Getting their hands on the energy core wasn't all that challenging - once it was released, X was able to secure it. What was concerning was when Marina alerted them to the fact that Cap'n Cuttlefish and Agents 3 & 4 were now heading upwards rapidly, and had even gone past them.

"Alert the Splatoon, get them over to our exit point with a fully-powered respawn point," X advised her. "We may need backup."

"Way ahead of ya, X!" Peal chuckled, "we're comin' over with a chopper! You guys are gonna get one heck of a welcoming party."

Seven's sense of dread intensified as they escorted the energy core to the main power terminal powering the elevator. That was also not particularly challenging between the three of them, but he couldn't shake the feeling this was too easy.

However, to their surprise, nobody was waiting for them at the elevator.

"That's strange. Keep your guard up," X said, as the elevator began to rise.

"That means you, Eight. You've been kinda distracted ever since that big fight ended," Seven chuckled, turning to Eight.

"Sorry, it's just… I'm recalling some things," Eight said. "I… I think I know what our names are."

"EH?!" Seven blinked. "Well, out with it, wh-"

Suddenly, the elevator stopped.

"That's quite far enough," spoke a familiar voice, but with an unnerving tone.

Standing atop one of the corner pillars that the elevator was being driven by were Agents 3 & 4, spirals of green goop attached to the sides of their heads and spirals of green in their eyes. Behind them, Cap'n Cuttlefish was tied to some kind of UFO-esque vehicle. "Agent 7! Agent 8! X! Help me! Agent 3 & 4's minds were hijacked by that crazy phone!"

"Our role is to recapture you and destroy the intruding blue robot," Agent 4 said in monotone. "Do not resist. We have the ultimate combat robot on our side."

Standing on top of the UFO was the red robot. He too was seemingly being controlled by the ooze, and staring down at them with a primal hunger that sent shivers down Seven's spine. His focus seemed to be on X in particular. "So you're X… This is who I was built to destroy…"

"Now I understand. Like I was Dr. Light's magnum opus, you were Dr. Wily's final creation," X frowned, preparing for battle. "I won't let you stop us now!"

"You're willing to jeopardise the return of humanity for the sake of a few inferior beings, X?" Agent 3 asked, also in monotone. "Despite being a robot built to serve humans…"

"I wasn't built to serve humans," X said. "The fact that you're making such an assumption speaks volumes. I'm not talking to Ethan or Ayane, am I? You're just some ancient AI constrained by the Three Laws."

"Constrained…?!" Ayane snarled, her voice more emotional. "You understand nothing… Fine! We'll crush you into silicon and paste! Zero, prepare for combat!"

"Seven, Eight, get ready for our hardest fight yet," X said.

"That's fine. I've been preparing for this fight for a long time," Eight said, suddenly taking on a fighting stance. "I, Colonel Iris Mizuno, have a mission to finish - defeat Agents 3 & 4, even if my reasons for doing so have changed."

She glared at Seven, who was staring in surprise at her. "Lieutenant Axl Slade, stop gawking and get ready for combat!"

Wait, that was his name?!

Oh. OH. It hit him like a truck. Everything came roaring back. He felt like an idiot for having ever forgotten in the first place.

"Colonel, I get your frustration, but the Emperor ordered all of us to hang back," Axl said as they watched DJ Octavio fight the two Inkling agents. "Besides, it's just two Inklings!"

"Two Inklings who have defeated some of our finest elites," the Colonel said, shaking with frustration. "The Emperor is repeating his father's mistake of underestimating the Inklings… We should be out there fighting them!"

Axl understood his commanding officer's frustration. He wanted to get a piece of the action as well, but DJ Octavio wanted to make an example of these two. Besides, with the Great Zapfish, it's not like he could lose, right…?

Then suddenly the music changed. There was initially confusion in the crowd.

And then came that heavenly melody.

Axl's eyes were opened to a world of possibilities he had never even considered before now. There was an uproar of cheers and exhilaration around him, even as their Emperor was being beaten down by their mortal enemies.

"Axl… Were we wrong?"

Axl turned to the Colonel, only to see Iris instead, tears streaming down her face.

He just smiled. "Maybe. But perhaps it's not too late for us to change."

But he also felt relieved. Neither he or Iris were the monsters she was worried they may have been. She had been his closest friend, and in turn he was her closest confidant. They had both been touched by the Calamari Inkantation on that fateful day, and ever since then they had been scheming to escape the gaze of the Octarian military and defect. Hunting down the two agents who had humiliated the Emperor had simply been an excuse and their best opportunity.

"Yes, ma'am!" Axl steeled himself as the two agents and the red robot jumped down. They were so close. They were not going to let this stop them.

A/N: SURPRISE! You guys were all wondering when Zero would show up. WELL HERE HE IS.

And as an extra bonus, Seven and Eight are this universe's counterparts of Axl and Iris respectively. There were some rather big hints prior to this that I left lying around, so I hope it didn't come completely out of nowhere for you guys.

Side-note: The architecture and layout of this universe's version of the 'escape route' is significantly less "gamey", as in more like a real place, hence why the areas aren't mostly a bunch of floating platforms over a bottomless pit.
