In Service of my Mistress (A Butler Quest)

[X] A Wizard and a Devil. A mage summons forth a demon from the pits of Hell itself. What starts as an uneasy alliance, becomes a bond stronger than any other.

[X] A Maid, elegant and graceful

[X] Her attire is...flamboyant to say the least. It is red, orange, and purple all at the same time, with a wide skirt that covers up everything but her ankles. Her hair is a bright white and pink, tied up in a single ponytail that reaches her shoulders. Golden earrings dangle from her ears, accentuating the wide smile on her face. The smile is one of innocence and childlike wonderment that takes Lady White aback slightly. The Mistress's red eyes sparkle with barely suppressed energy.

[X] Catherine
[X] Foxrice

The eccentric Mistress Catherine Foxrice with a Revenant Butler wins.

Some possible inspiration :

Also, there's the Draugr , a type of revenant described as being unnaturally heavy and has the power to either turn into vapor in order to leave it's grave or grow itself to giant size to crush it's enemies or eat them alive.

Also, there are sea draugr who have their own traits.

Basically, with a Draugr Butler, the lady of the house will always have someone to open jars, move furniture, relocate large structures, or do anything a super strong gentleman can do.
Though we might weigh four to five times more than a person of our frame should weigh... so no sitting on delicate furniture or stepping on the toes of people we like.

Possible reference for a Draugr butler:
Max from Cat's don't dance. (appears around 1:25)

I was gonna get the next update in today, but I think I'll need to postpone it until Late Saturday or Early Sunday.

I'm having trouble coming up with different types of Revenants and making them sufficiently unique from each other.

One thing you could do is a spectrum of physical vs magical power. Like on one end you got a physical god without a drop of magic, and the other they are as stong as a feather but have a ton of spooky dead guy powers.

Some more ideas:
Ink Ghosts

A person who died in rage or misery may return as a restless spirit. Then, if their image is repeatedly drawn by an artist in ink, the spirit may possess the ink stone or the source of the ink to return as an ink demon.

This could be mixed up a bit to get something akin to The Picture of Dorian Grey. Perhaps we had died with unfinished business, but either our restless spirit possessed a painting to turn it into a phylactory of sorts (which would turn us into something like a Lich that looks just like our picture in the painting).

Alternately, perhaps later artists and painters repeatedly made paintings that featured our image. We were either famous, or might have been servants or around a famous person so we kept getting painted into those famous paintings. Thus, over time we were able to possess those images and use that to bring ourself back as some kind of creature made of ink and paint.

Either way, we are a revenant with deep ties to ink and paint and need to keep our paintings safe and pristine in order to anchor ourself to the mortal plane. If our paintings are destroyed, we get weaker. Perhaps we 'exploit' this by always appearing alongside our Master or Mistress when they have their family portraits made. Someone looking through the family history not only sees that their butler always looks the same, but if they finally figure out what we are they will realise they only way to kill us is to destroy every painting of us ever and keep people from making more.

Hopping Corpse

We died a long way from home and could not rest until we were properly buried. So, our corpse rose up and tried to make it's way back, hopping along. However, we got lost and couldn't find our way home... perhaps even forgetting where our home was or remembering that it was destroyed from disaster or attack. We wandered for a time, draining chi from the living to sustain ourselves... until one day we met a boy who could take us in or needed our help. We traveled with him, helped him out, and eventually he started a family.

We finally had a home to be buried in... but we refused the chance. We had something to live for.

So we stayed as a servant for his family for generations, we watched them grow old and watched them die. Their spirits at peace, they had no need to stay as we did. So long as the family line remains, we will stay to care for them. If the family dies out and the house goes empty, we might have another chance to finally move on. To attend to the family affairs, to dig our own grave, to bury ourselves, and meet them in the afterlife.

As for powers, we need to absorb life energy to sustain ourselves... but we get stronger the more we consume. We get by comfortably by draining life from animals like chickens or cows and such and and eventually butchering them for meat to cook up (we make alot of dishes with fresh meat, cheese and eggs). If we go for too long without feeding, we get weaker until we are little more than a hopping corpse stiff from rigor mortis. But if we consume enough chi then we get progressively stronger, our weaknesses vanish, and we get all kinds of weird spooky powers.

Classic Revenant

Someone wronged us in life and we came back as a lightning-fast undead seeking vengeance. Over the years of service, we might have lost some of the vengence and general hatred of humanity, but we are still crazy fast when we want to be.

So Vampires do count as Revenants.

That makes things easier.

Funny story, I was thinking doing the traditional, but I ended up making the choices too similar so I decided to start over.

Thanks for the ideas.

Glad to help!

Though personally I'd be totally fine with our character just being any sort of human type undead that you feel could fit the setting.

Other ideas:

Headless Horseman

An old soldier who was killed via decapitation. Our restless spirit arose to find itself lacking a head and either went out searching for it or was unable to reattach it and now have to carry it around.

Interestingly, we ocean draugr (from sailors who died at sea) are sometimes depicted lacking heads and replace it with lumps of seaweed to cover their neck. Sea Draugr also have a fondness for drink ... which is good since they don't have teeth to chew things.

I imagine being headless is just one of those things that can happen to most types of undead who form from people who die. Though vampires might have a hard time of it since they kind of need fangs to suck blood.

Wendigo

From Native American folklore, wendigos are described as greedy, hungry, skeletal beings that grow ever bigger the more they consume... which has the effect that they can never be filled or satisfied. A wendigo never gets fat, it just gets bigger.

They are associated with cannibalism, greed, and acts that disrupt the environment or society. They also exist as a metaphor for people or things that greedily disrupt or exploit others without limit, who will continue their exploitation and never be satisfied even as they get stronger.

Not sure how such a creature could end up as a Butler, though.

Prologue III
You stand at ease, watching as Mistress Catherine immediately sets her attention upon the visiting Lady White. Your Mistress was never one for formal introductions or traditions, spending many an hour talking about how she would one day come up with her own traditions to replace the originals. And right now was no different, as she grabs ahold of Lady White's hand and pulls her out of the chair.

The Mistress' voice is light and sweet as honey to your ears, "Come, I must show you the latest addition to my garden! Its beauty is something that must be seen to be believed!" Before Lady White can protest, the Mistress starts to drag her towards the western exit to the room. Before leaving, she stops in the door frame and turns to you with a smile on her face, "Oh...

[] Percival
[] Godfree
[] Claude
[] Write In…

...bring some drinks out for the both of us, please and thank you!" With that she disappears through the doorway, closing it behind her as she does.

You bow briefly, before turning and heading towards the kitchen. The silence of the estate is your only companion as you walk. Your own outfit stands out amongst the polished floors and walls of the building. You look up at the ceiling enjoying your handiwork at getting that particular section to sparkle and shine as if it was brand new. It didn't take you very long either. Two minutes at most you believe. The Mistress was very much impressed at that, and you remember swelling with pride at her praise.

As you turn another corner you come face to face with your own reflection. You stop walking and just look at yourself in quiet contemplation. You can't help but remember that you've been here…

[] As long as you can remember. Your spirit still hasn't found rest, and that's just the way you like it. You promised to serve this family, and you won't allow something as trivial as death stop you. (The Progenitor)

[] For a few years. You're a second generation spirit, created by renewing the old one from so long ago. You still have a strong desire to serve this family, but it is not as binding as it once was. (The Second)

[] Only very recently. You're one of the newest renewals of the original spirit and are still trying to find yourself around here. (The Newbie)

It is inevitable that reminiscing about your age causes you to focus on your past. Even as you continue heading towards the kitchen, your history is at the forefront of your mind. It wouldn't be the first time. You've learned that one of the parts of being undead is having a very long memory. This can be a good thing, as it lets you remember that Catherine enjoys a Roman Holiday Cocktail, light on the alcohol, with salt sprinkled around the glass.

However, it can also remind you of less...pleasant things.

Such as when you almost lost everything.

Your mind wanders back to that time.

The time when you died and what happened to you:

[] You remember dying. Whether it was in a battle at the hands of warriors or being pushed into the dirt by less scrupulous foes, you cannot say. What you do remember is that you felt no sweet embrace of death. No slow creeping darkness taking away the light. No, what you felt was Pride. This intense feeling...it carried you. It brought you to countless battles, all of which you won. And every time you did, you felt the emotion grow stronger and stronger. Until one day, it all but consumed you. (Traditional Revenant)

[] You remember dying...but not truly. Instead of being put into the cold earth, you rose as a Vampire. One of the Lords of the Night that many still tell stories of today. Yours was a reign that lasted for a long time. Soon enough, you had built your own Hold that housed many a supernatural, all loyal to you and only you. However, it did not last. Two others of your kin, both powerful in their own right, brought it all crashing down. Your armies were dashed, your servants slayed, your home destroyed. You were the only one to escape...but it did nothing to ease your pain. It only hastened your descent into despair. (Vampire Lord)

[] You remember dying. But, as your body decomposed, your Spirit survived. You aren't sure what it was kept you tied to this mortal coil. Regrets? A task left unfulfilled? Or maybe something more esoteric? Whatever it was, you were never able to find it. And wandering the world of the living when you are already dead is not something that should be done. Without a body, without a purpose, you began to lose your mind. (Displaced Ghost)

[] You remember drowning at sea. Somehow, you found yourself not dying on the cold hard earth, but falling into the deep blue of the ocean. The burning water filled your lungs as you struggled under the waves. All of your fighting ended up for naught. However, you did not die. You made it back to land, and couldn't help but feel this Hunger. It was insatiable, unstoppable. You couldn't hold it back, and many died before you were finally stopped. By then, your consciousness was almost completely gone. (Sea Draugr)

It was your darkest moment. One you thought you'd never escape. You were ready to call it quits, let the void take you and leave only a husk that would walk this earth forever.

But then...he came.

Lord Foxrice. He was the first human to give you something no others had. Every other had either ran from you out of fear or tried to kill you out of anger.

No, he was the first to give you…

[] Compassion. The kind only a simple, common man can give.
[] Respect. The kind that only a proud, honorable warrior can give.
[] Hope. The kind that only a true leader could give.
[] Humility. The kind only a wise, worldly soul could give.

It was then that you took the Oath that has kept you inexplicably linked to this family through the years:

[] That no matter what events transpired, through hard times, through all crisis, you would defend the Foxrice lineage until your Second Death.

  • First choice determines, what else, you're name.

  • Second choice determines how old you are. This will mostly how much knowledge you start out with, your experience with other supernaturals/humans, and a bit of your personality. If you're the Progenitor, that means you are the OG and have a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw from. While some of the newer mythics might surprise you every now and then, you're still good enough to show them what for. If your the Second Generation that means you have some knowledge and experience, but still have room to grow. The Newbie is completely new and needs practice.

  • Third choice determines what kind of undead you are and powers that are unique to you. All of them gain the same powers most undead do (i.e. enhanced strength and durability, low body temperature, etc.) however each also has a few specific to them:
    • The Traditional is a Master Warrior, can use every weapon no matter what it is, has a physical and incorporeal form, and can drag people to it using it's own power. You also have a sword that can destroy souls and kill other supernaturals, even ghost.
    • The Vampire Lord is...well a Vampire Lord. You're weak to the sun, have wings, fangs, need for blood, super strength, speed, durability, the works. You can also turn those you feed off of into familiars like Alucard from Hellsing Ultimate.
    • The Displaced Ghost is...a Ghost. Flight, ability to walk through walls, can't be hurt by physical objects, can manipulate objects in the physical world, can possess others, and you can use Spiritual Fire that can kill other undead for good.
    • Lastly, the Sea Draugr. This one will give you the ability to change your height and weight at will, you have immense strength, can eat others to regain your health if you're damaged, can breathe underwater, and sense treasure from a mile away. Your fist can also harm supernatural enemies.

  • Fourth Choice is what it is that the original Lord Foxrice showed you that brought you back. As you can see, every Revenant was basically right on the edge of falling into despair and losing their consciousness forever. This choice determines what it is that Foxrice did that caused you to take your Oath in the first place. This will determine what it is the Foxrice Lineage is known for, and how it has helped them reach where they are today.

  • The Final Choice is your Oath. This is the binding statement that you made to the Scion of the family all those years ago. The one that has kept you going throughout the years. That replaced your original feeling of despair, pride, and hunger and gave you a new purpose in life. I only put one, because that's the default. To be honest, I couldn't think of any others that would be appropriate. So, if you guys have a better idea for one, put it up. Just remember that it will say a lot about your character for the future.

Can't resist vampires, also lets us recruit dependable help for dirt cheap if we want to be unscrupulous about our abilities to create familiars.
Compassion also sounds like a nice start to the family, our original lord was just a common child, who wasn't really destined for, or born to achieve greatness, but with a bit of kindness he got the helper of a lifetime, and now his lineage is one the richest, and most prestigious in the world.
