How to do an ISOT story properly?

...Shit. The more I think about it, the more I realize that with the Earth / Tatooine ISOT idea, it would severely affect Luke Skywalker's upbringing. He would be about 10 years old at the time of the transition, and suddenly being thrust into a world where he's a famous hero...God, I can't imagine that having good effects on him, even with Obi-Wan still being around to help guide him.

Eugghh. I really don't want to derail him like that. Maybe it would be better to introduce Earth in some other fashion...I'll mull on it some more.

Now I am imagining an international cabal of Star Wars fans taking Luke in and making sure he gets a well grounded upbringing - they'd be able to protect him because in the modern world Star Wars fans are _everywhere_ now, including in the halls of power of governments and corporation headquarters...

It's hardly the only way things could go, but the idea of a "Star Wars fan illuminati" taking a firm grip on things on Earth and making sure things don't get too messed up rather tickles me.

And if you are a member of www.alternatehistory.com, there's a great ISOT story there called "Arose from out the Azure Main" which is the closest I've ever seen to a convincing portrayal of how people might react to being ISOTed.

I think I remember reading a fic called rift where portals and isots happen all over the world, and it ended up with earth going through another dark ages or something, just can't remember where I read it though

I suddenly get an idea of a sort of multiple ISOT where bits from an alternate modern Earth either switch places with our Earth or is put in a different setting.

A Norse pagan Scandinavian Empire, a rational Islamic Caliphate of Cordoba, a Zoroastrian Persia, a fourth Buddhist branch Nusantaran Federation, and a Algonquin-Iroquois Great Lakes Republic, all ala Golden Island to the West in a way.

I say it'll be interesting if the nations all came from alternate Earths themselves.

I always found the old Clancyverse Earth ISOT in BTverse from over at SB a pretty well done example of ISOT.

For something smaller whats your opinion on the Grantville book series?

I second that call for a link.

As for Grantville. It is a fun series. It's very American cheese, but in the good way. Grantville gets unrealistically lucky I feel and the people of 1632 DEFINITELY adopt modern day modes of thinking too quickly (it took real societies some considerable time to transition from Agrarian culture and attitudes to cultures and attitudes that worked well with industrial technology most all of which are anything but obviously advantageous if you don't already take them for granted), but the characters are engaging and the writing is generally of good quality.

Hmm its been a while but lets see....

BT/Clancyverse Round Robin Story Thread.

Here you go.

Which reminds me.

Take note of our frivolity. I just found my cousin sniffing scented pens.

In a world where parchment is valuable, where paper is made of animal skin, where books are near non existent and chained to shelves, and where they don't even have ballpoints... We have scented pens. For children.

Oh yeah. Please note about the individual capabilities of the country in question. Their solidarity, their education, and industry. And their food storage. All very important.

I'm interested in writing a an ISOT of fictional characters and/or their associated settings being brought to our world. Take Fawlty Towers - how would a hotel full of guests from the late 1970s react to our 2019? How does Basil react to John Cleese etc?
