Chapter 3
Malcom tossed the unfinished model plane back in to it's box, a flash of irritation flickering through him as one of the landing wheels snapped off. Something else about the damned thing he would have to fix later.
He couldn't bring himself to care too terribly much about it at the moment though. After the trip to the spirit world with Bart and his friends, he had been left with more questions than answers.
No source he had been able to find had any information on the names he remembered from his (Vision? Dream? Memory?) Leaving him once more with no clear answers to his origin and no idea of how to proceed.
Well, other than journeying to the center of the earth, but he had no clue on how he was going to go about doing that.
In the absence of anything immediately pressing he had begun tutoring Maggie in preparation for when she went back to school. He wasn't certain if she was emotionally ready for the social hellscape that was freshman high school, but he would at least be sure she was intellectually equipped for whatever challenges it threw at her.
The process had been slow at first, both because Maggie was more behind than he had expected and because he had needed to relearn material he hadn't thought about in years, much of which he had forgotten. While the hard disciplines like mathematics and physics were easy for him to relearn and pass on to Maggie, the softer subjects like history and english had given him some trouble. Thankfully a few hours of searching on the internet had landed him several websites that were intended for homeschooling, and he had manage to relearn just enough to bluff his way through the lessons.
They had also been spending more time together just doing things as a family. Park visits and movie nights were a regular occurrence, as well as finding events around the city that caught her interest. He hadn't yet been able to help her make new friends like he intended, but he had hope still.
The other project he had been working on was studying the copied notes on the Angel that he and Naomi had secured from the old Seer outpost in the abandoned shopping mall. As he had suspected, he was certain that he could make use of it, but he wasn't quite certain on how to go about doing so. Some initial attempts at reverse engineering the Infrastructure built in to the Angel using his own tools and a bit of his golden fire had yielded minor results. Nothing of true substance, but enough novel magic that he knew he wasn't pursuing a dead end.
What he really needed were more examples of magical systems that were distinct enough from how the God Machine did things as a point of contrast. The problem with that was there were very few sources that he could draw upon to get that kind of information.
Valkyrie certainly had whole warehouses full of magical notebooks, but he needed authorization in order to access them, and then permission to have them shipped to him. The only reason he had been able to get a copy of the notes on the Angel so easily was because they were already in Boston and his superiors had been willing to bend the rules a bit to let him keep any duplicates they had made.
There was the option of the Goblin Markets. If he recalled correctly, Abigail had said it was something of bazaar for all forms of magical goods and services. The downside was that because it was a free for all, he was just as likely to bump in to someone who took offense to his existence and try and rub him out as he was to find something critical to his work efforts.
His last project was simply finding a new place to live. His apartment had been good to him, but he had never intended to live with another person, let alone his sister, so he had rented it on the assumption that he would be living alone. While his old workroom made a serviceable bedroom for Maggie at the moment, she was a growing teenager and the space she had now was unlikely to be enough for her in a few years.
There were a few houses near the city that had caught his eye in his search, one of which came from a list of potentially haunted houses that Valkyrie was aware of but was considered a low priority. They had slapped a "Condemned" sign on the front and let local law enforcement take care of the legwork in keeping people away.
In theory so long as he managed to rid the house of whatever spirit was haunting the house he could buy it from the city on the cheap. It might need a bit of renovation to counteract half a decade of neglect, but he was confidant he could afford it.
As Maggie was in the living room studying, and was likely to be occupied for the time being, Malcom decided now would be a good time to do a grocery run and try to make progress on his other projects. Closing the box on the model plane and shelving it for later, Malcom walked over to Maggie and tapped her on the shoulder to get her attention.
"I'm heading out to do some errands and get some food. You hungry for anything?"
She shook her head. "No, not really." She hadn't looked at him when she answered, too absorbed in her studies. He was willing to bet that she hadn't really understood what he was asking and thought he was talking about her immediate hunger.
Since education was more important right now, Malcom decided not to break her focus to clarify. "Alright, I'll be gone for a bit. Call me if you need anything."
With a distracted "Okay" as his answer, he gave her an encouraging pat on the shoulder, before grabbed his keys and exiting the apartment.
