Hell to Reign

I think there's been a few 'field Commmission' too with just mid-Crisis boom she's a Ward.
Interesting. And very much working with my thought that joining the Wards is deliberately quite streamlined for the sake of getting as many in as possible. Especially in Brockton Bay. Though Piggot is most definitely going to be regretting having streamlined as much as she did...

Honestly I think I'm most looking forwards to watching the queen of escalation really learn to lean into the demon queen archetype and rebuild herself into whatever she wants to be. Along with Danny's reaction when he inevitably finds his daughter with her succubus best friend/girlfriend

Inferno (H5)

For Inferno factions in other games, see Inferno. The Inferno is a faction in Heroes of Might and Magic V. Imprisoned between worlds by the legendary wizard known as the Seventh Dragon, the Legions of Chaos want out in the worst way - using any destructive, spiteful, vicious and sadistic methods...

So she's got a whole lot of demons/devils and access to basically all the curses and pure blasting magic, but no buffs and basically no healing.
Granted she traded the undead horde effects from earlier games for demonic power, but I think that will work better in worm anyways, given the thematic effects of empowering the self with demonic energies instead of like… turning into a lich and losing her awesome hair. I suppose she could always become Sanguine after she's done conquering everything?

Does she have access to enchanting/artifact creation or only what can be picked up spell wise in game?

And does she actually get perks or does that need to be trained via demonic tutoring?

Honestly the whole 'Necropolis-Inferno fusion' thing in IV was weird and not particularly fun to play with. And the lore behind the V version of Inferno allows for an actual explanation for how Taylor got her power. And also there's not really anything special about Necropolis to make it worth doing, as it's pretty generic necromancy.

Taylor has smiths, artificers, and enchanters around, as would be needed to support a society outside of game mechanics. Everything and anything needed for the functioning of a society can be expected to be available.

She has to study and train, as this isn't a gamer-type fic.

Okay, good that she has to study, gamer type power ups are generally… not that fun to read unless the whole story deep dives into how the system interacts with reality tbh.

*cackles*
Oh she is going to blow the PRT's minds when she learns how to build stuff with magic and demonic power. Honestly this is like the reverse of that Doomgirl Taylor fic and I cannot wait for the build up to true queen of hell level badass <3

Earlier in the story Taylor stated that once Danny found out about Taylor Triggering he would think of himself as a failure of a father.

Guess what Danny, you're right. You did fail as a father.

Yes, you lost your wife and was torn up about it. That does not excuse neglecting your daughter who also lost her mother. And not notice for two years that her grades took a massive nosedive, her best friend suddenly dropped off the radar and her clothes and school materials were being vandalized. And you were working late nights in a port union that was slowly dying, and/or trying to bring back a ferry that the city govt was obviously not interested in.

I'm surprised Danny didn't drown himself in a bottle or worse, actually.

The only thing that was worse was when Canon Danny tried to pull parental authority (to make her join the Wards I think) and Taylor walked away.

So yeah, Danny's not getting the Father of the Year award.

Yeah, there really aren't a lot of ways for him to not be a fuck up of a dad tbh. Especially cause I think he's kinda religious in this one? I think that was mentioned earlier. So demon queen of a hell is probably gonna get her booted out of her childhood home.

Maybe there's something in her realm that will let her pull her mother's soul back if that happens? I mean, I doubt it would be easy or free, but it probably could be done.

Taylor isn't concerned with getting kicked out, but about Danny collapsing like after her mother died.
Before she could do more than open her mouth, I cut her off and continued, "It's not that Dad would have a problem with me being a cape, or joining the Wards. He'd probably be happy with my initiative. No, it's that he'd take my powers as a sign that he'd failed me. He might not have attended Mass since before he married Mom but… lapsed or not, I don't think his Catholic background would let him accept that he isn't responsible for me gaining a horde of demons."

Problem there is that Sheogh isn't an afterlife, or connected to one. While people can end up there after death, it's only if they made certain pacts or deals that result in things like becoming a succubus.

Its part of why "He is/was an alcoholic"is one of his more reoccurring fanon traits.

Think he had the big brain idea to lock her in her room till she talked, then was surprised that she ran away instead.

Danny suffers from untreated depression (and probably couldn't afford a good shrink even if he was able to admit to needing one) and Doylistly is a parent in a Teen Adventureish story, along with being a (limited/occasional) Authority Figure Written by Wildbow.

"Glenn Chambers' idea," I replied with a shrug. "He thought I would make a good anti-villain."

I then pulled off my helmet and reverted to my normal accent. "Anyway, I'm Taylor Hebert when I take the Demon Queen off. What about you guys?"

Shadow Stalker abruptly recorporealized and collapsed with a thud.
I think that's the funniest meeting of the two that I can recall offhand. Just dawning moment of "oh crap" straight into unconsciousness. Or perhaps fury. Stalker isn't known for good emotional discernment.
I came here to avoid this kind of knee-jerk judgementalism! So much for your chivalrous persona, Gallant.
Ouch, wonder what his issue is. He sounds like Brandish in miniature. Then again, I imagine he spends a lot of time there.
A burning heat rose in my chest and I snarled back "I could ask the same of you Hess. But I am here as the Wards' new chained monster because today's stunt with a biohazardous locker made me the new ruler of Hell."
Well. I'm hoping the next chapter is soon because that's not a good note to leave off on. Does she abruptly quit the team? Blow up the Rig? Complain to management? Inquiring minds need to know! :D
So Mister 'I bought my powers and don't consider people I can't read as real' just stepped in it again. Tell me again why Vicky is dating Dean again?
Really? How did they even end up together then? Of course Worm has larger plot holes, soooo...
Oh, and Glory Girl and Brandish are going to love Lilith. Brandish is going to be her usual prejudiced judgemental self and Glory Girl is going to become Lilith's self-appointed nemesis. Panacea might get a major case of the vapors once she sees Lilith in person. 😎
I kinda figured Gallant was an ass specifically because he moves in the same circles.

I hadn't even considered Panacea, that's kinda a funny thought.
As for why Vicky's dating him, one fic I've read suggested that Carol and his parents set them up. Given her home life and established issues with critical thinking, I can see her sticking with it because she doesn't realize what a good and healthy relationship looks like.
That would make a lot of sense...

I was kinda assuming that Dean was more than just not getting a read on Taylor, that subconsciously he was picking up... something, either related to her being Queen of a Hell Dimension and linked to the Dragon that is said Hell Dimension, or related to her potential long slow transformation into something demonic herself. Only, he's never picked up anything remotely like what he's getting from her, doesn't know how to parse it enough to even analyse it consciously, and the monkeybrain is doing what monkeybrain do, 'different == bad!'

"New girl with scary armor, approved and supported by the Image guys? Okay, jealous. And she's totally going to be my new bes- wait, Hebert?!" *Sophia.exe has stopped working and needs to close*

Oh, nothing dramatic.

Yeah it's definitely something that's being at least partially addressed in the next chapter. Suffice it to say, there's multiple things going on here, and only some of it is going to come out in the near future.

In part because I haven't figured it all out yet.

If it isn't fanon, she was dating him before she got her powers, and probably before she knew him all that well (I've seen claims that she started dating him because he was a cape, but I'm not clear on how she would know that, if it's true); also, they do break up a lot. Maybe he has enough qualities that she likes for her to ignore the bad qualities until he does something that reminds her of them and they have another big fight.

Wasn't there a fan theory about Dean being resistant to her aura, while Vicky is straightforward enough that Dean's emotion sense wasn't giving constant info or something like that?

I'm honestly torn on this one. On one hand, it is SoD straining how well Taylor and everyone else accept the whole hell and demons thing and deal with it. On the other hand, the whole disbelief song and dance tends to be tedious.

I'll say that beyond that, there's a pervasive sense of shallowness. Both in how smoothly everything falls into place and how all the characters act and feel. It feels like it wants to be crack but won't commit to it.

Still, it is entertaining enough to read and I know that sometimes an author just wants to get an idea out of their brain or have a silly side project. This is something you're doing for fun and sharing for free, so it isn't like you owe us anything.

There is an element of 'sure you are' going on in places Taylor can't see and people within the PRT bureaucracy thinking the whole thing is a mixture of power quirks and Taylor having issues while also really wanting to grab up the obviously powerful cape before she changes her mind and goes villain. So basically people are humoring her. Or think they are.

Oh trust me, this is simply the calm before the storm for the story. The tension with Gallant and Shadow Stalker are frankly the tip of, not an iceberg, but a massive shoal.

I shall wait with baited breath for Taylor to shatter such shoals under the heels of her demonic legions then!<3

Fair enough. I assume some degree of it, but given there wasn't a single line of narration mentioning so much as a dubious look or awkward pause, I thought it bore mentioning.

As an aside, I will say that specifically Taylor's reaction is technically believable. Because human brains will legit hit a certain threshold of overwhelmed where they hit the emergency valve and it's just calm curiosity. You see it with people who wake up after an explosive surprise with no idea where they are or how they got there.

Although she really should have an uh oh the moment she gets a breath and some time to think, like when she sits down on her Wards room. And the whole thing could be sold a lot better if she has a few moments of being spacey/aloof or remarks on being disturbingly calm about things peppered in.

Good to know, although I'd still like to point out that this bit here:

Before he could continue, or someone could reply though, the elevator chimed again and everyone hastily replaced their facial coverings. That done, I locked eyes the best I could with the older Ward. "So the fact that I unmasked to you guys, that you were brought in to meet a new Ward by your own superiors, that Triumph recognized me, all that means nothing to you? No, I'm clearly up to something nefarious because I'm dressed in spiky black armor. I came here to avoid this kind of knee-jerk judgementalism! So much for your chivalrous persona, Gallant."
You should really add some buildup. Reading it felt disconnected and gave me the impression (even if I intellectually knew it wasn't intended like that) it was a deliberate act from Taylor instead of her having a genuine outburst. It's the lack of internal monologue showing how she feels about that combined with the fact there's an explicit pause and distraction before she says that, which gives the impression it's premeditated.

Overall I'd suggest getting a beta, less in the "I edit out typos and shit" sense and more "I read what you wrote and give you a second opinion from someone who doesn't know what's going on in the background".

Rereading this again, are those little tells that her power is physically effecting her? That voice control bit and her laugh maybe?
