Kay Yorktown had been having a good day. There was an exhibition match against St Gloriana's tonight, the team was pumped and ready to go, Faye Faith had said there would be chicken fried steak at the 445 for dinner today, and both El and Lulu had sent her texts wishing her luck against the British-themed team. Even classes had been fun today instead of boring or frustrating!

Naturally, that all changed when the blonde was released early from math class to get the team ready for the match. Tally had requested that Kay give her a ride over to the garage when they got released early, and yet, when the blonde made it to their meeting point in her Willys MB, her girlfriend was nowhere to be found.

"Come on, Tally! You're never late!" Kay grumbled, looking around the parking lot. When the braided redhead failed to appear out of thin air, Kay pulled her phone out and sent Tally a text.

Kay: I'm waiting for you in the parking lot! Where are you?
Tally: new phone who dis
K: It's Kay!
T: o shit
T: ill be there soon

Kay stared at the exchange. That… that was not Tally. The redhead never cursed, and she always capitalized and punctuated her texts. Well, whoever they were, at least they'd either be there soon, or were somewhere else entirely. Maybe then, Kay could get into solving the puzzle of what happened to her girlfriend.

She'd give the mystery person three minutes, then she'd leave. There was still lots of last minute prep work to be done, and if Tally was MIA, that meant more work for the rest of the command team. The first two minutes were spent browsing her phone, trying to figure out if something weird had happened while she wasn't paying attention, and the third was watching the school building in front of her.

A familiar face came jogging out of the school building. She was tall, with sandy blonde hair, excited hazel eyes, and wearing a uniform that Kay had literally never seen her wear before. Why would she, when Rachel Knight was supposed to be a Matilda commander at St Gloriana's?

"What the hell? You're actually waiting for me?" Rach asked, staring at Kay and her jeep in shock. She only paused a moment before continuing over to the vehicle. "I appreciate the thought, Cap, but I thought call time was after classes got out!"

Kay gaped. "I… what? Rach? What are you doing here? Where's Tally?"

"Where's Tally?" Rach echoed, raising an eyebrow. "Last I heard, back in the States. She didn't have the grades to make it here or to St Glo like she wanted."

The shorter blonde blinked. "She's in the US? But she's Turkey's commander!"

"You okay, Cap? Turkey's been inactive all year!"

Kay hummed noncommittally. "Just get in the car. May as well get you to the garage."

Rach acquiesced, and climbed into shotgun. "Well, thanks for the ride. Warden's a pain in the ass to get running, so the extra time is much appreciated!"

"Happy to help!" the team captain said, giving the taller girl a thumbs up. As soon as Rach was seated, Kay stepped on it, leaving skid marks on the ground as she careened towards the sensha-do garage. It was a thankfully short drive, and the blonde didn't give Rach much more than a nod as she climbed out of the jeep and made her way over to the command room.

Naomi, Alisa, and Hannah were all waiting like Kay expected, but once again, Tally was missing. So was Lou. "What are we looking at?"

"Well, we've got St Gloriana's predicted lineup, just going by what they used during the regular season," Alisa began, pulling out a file folder. "Darjeeling will probably have her Churchill be the flag tank, escorted by a force that primarily consists of Matildas. However, they also have a force of Crusaders that we'll need to worry about. We'll have to rely on Eagle as a flank guard to cover us."

"Should be three or four Crusaders," Hannah piped up. While Alisa continued sorting through her file folder, the redhead (and wasn't that a thought, with the expected redhead being completely MIA) started pulling Alisa's miniature tanks out from the cabinet. A green Churchill, five brown Matildas, and four gray Crusaders were placed at one end of the big map spanning the central table, while Saunders' own forces were laid out on the other end. Wiz, Alisa's M4A1, Pluck, Naomi's Firefly, Warden, the M6 that apparently Rach was commanding, and seven basic M4s, including the blonde's own beloved Spunky.

The battlefield itself was fairly open. Not completely open, and there were certain chokepoints that Kay would really rather not push without Warden or Axe, knowing the propensity of St Glo to utilize their heavier armored tanks, but also not so wide that Rosehip's Crusaders or Tally in Izumi would be able to rampage like nobody's business.

Tally…

Something about the redhead's continued absence bothered Kay, but she just couldn't put her finger on it.

"Good work. Can I trust you three to come up with the details of the plan we hashed out yesterday? I need to go check on something real quick…"

"You okay?" Naomi asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Damned if I know… something feels fucky today," Kay paused and looked around the room. Naomi seemed impassive, Hannah was visibly confused, but Alisa… Alisa squirmed slightly under Kay's gaze. "Alisa, come with me."

"Y-yes, Ma'am!"

As soon as the two of them were outside the command room, Kay gently rounded on her second in command. "Do you have any idea where the fuck Tally went?"

"...who?"

"My girlfriend. Red hair that she always wears with a braid, about five foot five, loves light tanks and going fast? Super cheerful?"

Again, Alisa hesitated. "You have a girlfriend?"

Kay just stared for a moment before walking up to the nearest wall and smashing her forehead into it. It hurt. A lot. But almost more importantly, she left a small dent in the metal wall. Alisa's eyes went wide, and she quickly rushed back inside the command room.

"Shit…" Kay groaned. "What the ever loving fuck is going on here?"

Naturally, nothing answered her. Kay glared at the dent in the wall, as if willing it to magically fix itself. When that didn't happen, the blonde let out another sigh and set off for a very specific part of the garage. Tally had always called it the Oddball Corner, where Turkey Company's light tanks, Ironside Platoon's non-Jumbo heavies, the two Lees, and the lone, unused Hellcat usually waited.

Warden and Toast weren't there, which made a certain amount of sense if Rach was involved with the Ironsides, but Izumi and Bolt both were. The two M5A1 Stuarts looked to be in pretty bad shape, like they had before Tally came and fixed Izumi up.

"Hey Izumi…" Kay said softly, walking up to the light tank in question. She reached out and patted "I know you can't really respond to me, but… today has just been a really weird day for me. Tally's missing, Rach is commanding Warden when she should be at St Glo, you're not fixed up at all, and I just… What's going on? Why has the world gone all topsy-turvy?"

Kay imagined that the spirit of the M5A1, if she was even there, was just as confused as she was. It felt absurd to think about, but if Alisa didn't know about Tally, if Rach had just always gone to Saunders instead of St Gloriana's, and all the other minor points of confusion going around, then Izumi almost certainly didn't know about her redheaded TC.

Maybe Faye Faith or Henley would know, since they were rather close with Tally. Or had been. Yeah. Maybe they knew something that Kay didn't. She'd have to ask them during setup and before they got their food truck up.

++++++++++

Nobody knew anything. Jane and April weren't on the sensha-do team, Turkey Company was completely defunct, Rachel Knight was one of two TCs in Ironside Platoon (the other being Kay herself, when she needed the extra armor that the Sherman Jumbo provided), and while Ace seemed to be around, her TC was also nowhere to be found.

Tally Evans and Louise Tuckerman were both missing, but Kay Yorktown was the only person who seemed to realize that.

"You found her, and then immediately lost her?" Jade Henley demanded. "You knew where my twin was?"

"Look, Henley, I don't know anymore," Kay replied, cupping her face in her hands. "Because for whatever fucking reason, I'm the only person who remembers Tally Evans attending Saunders!"

"Easy there," the redhead replied, gently patting Kay's shoulder. "I know what that's like, knowing something that nobody else seems to know… but you may want to look behind you…"

"What?" the blonde team captain intoned. She pivoted and immediately zeroed in on an approaching pack of St Gloriana's girls, led by Darjeeling herself. But behind the Font of Other People's Wisdom was a rather surprising person. Blue eyes, pinkish-red hair in a braid, and a bright, confident smile on her face.

Tally Evans… was wearing the St Gloriana's uniform.

"...what?" Kay repeated.

"Hello, Kay," Darjeeling led off, ever so elegantly. "It's a pleasure to see you after that slight kerfuffle in April."

"Hey Darj!" Kay replied on instinct, her mind still stuck on the fact that Tally Evans was wearing the St Gloriana's uniform. "What's up?"

"I was just coming over to visit your camp to introduce you to the newest members of the Tea Garden," Darj explained, taking a sip of her ever-present tea. "May I introduce you to Orange Pekoe, Rosehip, and Rose Petal?"

Three girls stepped forward, using Darjeeling's introduction of them as a cue. The first, Orange Pekoe, was a shorter ginger who looked like she was copying Darjeeling's hairstyle. She gave a polite curtsey, which Kay returned with a nod. The second girl was a very enthusiastic with hair that was even closer to pink than Tally's. Rosehip gave Kay an energetic but very sloppy salute, somehow spilling her tea everywhere except on the people around her.

And finally, Tally "Rose Petal" Evans stepped forward and gave Kay a crisp salute and confident smile. "It's nice to meet you, ma'am."

Kay blinked. "...Tally?"

Rose Petal dropped her salute and peered at Kay, an inquisitive look on her face. "Ma'am? You know my name?"

"What the fuck is going on here?" a very confused Henley asked. She was rapidly looking between the two blonde team leaders and her identical twin dressed in the wrong uniform, trying to figure out if there was an answer to her question.

"Language!" Tally snapped. She blinked and immediately gave a slight bow. "My apologies. I am working on my instinct to snap at someone whenever they say something uncouth."

"It's fine," Henley replied, waving off her twin's worries. "I'm just confused as to why I have an evil twin running around at St Gloriana's of all places."

"And what is that supposed to mean?"

"You and me are fucking identical!"

"Language!"

"Shove it up your ass!"

"How rude!"

Kay just rubbed her temple as the twins began to bicker like the siblings they weren't. "Say, Darj, want to step away from the insanity for a bit? I have something I'd like to discuss with you in private."

"Of course," Darjeeling nodded. She turned to her subordinates. "Assam, please make sure everyone makes it safely back to our encampment. And should any Kuromorimine students come by, please make sure they are well cared for. It is the least we can do, since they were gracious enough to lend us their field for our exhibition match."

Assam nodded and began coordinating as Kay grabbed Darjeeling by the shoulder and steered her over towards where the Saunders command tent had been set up. Naomi had been working on something, but she saw Kay bring in the other team's captain and immediately vacated the area, leaving the two old friends alone.

"Darj… Lizzie… please tell me I'm not crazy," Kay began.

"You aren't crazy, Kay."

"I seem to be the only person here who remembers your 'Rose Petal' as Tally Evans, who was a Stuart commander here at Saunders… as well as my girlfriend," Kay explained.

"I retract my previous statement."

"Fuck off," Kay immediately snapped. Elizabeth took the quip in stride, merely inclining her head towards the blatantly American girl. "In fact, it looks to me like she swapped places with Rach Knight. In my weird, I dunno, fantasy, Rach was a Matilda commander, and had the tea name Arizona."

"...ah," Darjeeling intoned simply, taking a sip of her tea. "I was wondering where Arizona had gotten to."

"Wait, you know?!"

"Of course I do. But it is nice to learn that my insanity is shared with you."

Kay flashed her old friend the traditional rude gesture of her people. Elizabeth gave her a cheeky grin and shot one right back before recomposing herself. "Damn, Darj. Didn't know you still had it in you!"

"Kay, surely you must know by now that St Gloriana's has not reshaped me, merely refined me. I thought you would have learned that by now."

"Yeah, yeah, I getcha. Just-" Kay cut herself off as a commotion began outside. She stood up and quickly made her way to the tent's door, where… "Why the fuck is there a King Tiger in the middle of our camp?"

"Hmm?" Darjeeling asked, stepping out a moment later. "Oh my…"

Maho Nishizumi had a peculiar look on her face. She was halfway out the hatch of the driver's position on the Konigstiger when she spied Kay and Darj. "Kay! Get over here right now!"

She didn't need to say it twice, because Kay was already jogging over. No reason not to, what with Louise Tuckerman sitting in the heavy tank's commander's cupola.

Author's Note: Well, it's about a week late and not quite what I wanted, but the idea is there! Happy April Fools everyone! For those of you who don't know her, Louise "Lou" Tuckerman belongs to the amazing @Salocin. If you don't recognize her, go and check out her story, Ace, as well as the collab that we're (very slowly) working on, Yet Still We Sail! And in case you somehow missed it, here's the art that I got to go along with this chapter!

That was… certainly suitable for april fools, true enough. Glad to see the muse somewhat cooperating

Rewriting Update!
Hey all! I know it's been a while, but I am happy to report that Parts 10, 11, and 12 have now all been rewritten! I really hope that the next chunk won't take all that long, since we're getting to Tally's first proper tanks match, but we shall see!

I've also started crossposting the rewritten stuff over to Spacebattles! Go check it out!

Yet another rewrite announcement!
Hey all! I am very happy to announce that Parts 14 through 19 have been rewritten!

Also, in a slightly different announcement, I'll be going back and removing any mentions of Eagle, Turkey, and Ironsides Platoons/Companies from the rewritten stuff. They're a concept I borrowed from @Salocin's Ace, which I no longer feel fits HoT's Saunders.

Haha, rewrites!
Heya! This chunk of rewrites took a lot shorter than normal! Parts 23-26 have been rewritten, including the Kay interlude. Part 25 and the Interlude have also had their positions in the story swapped, so the interlude will be coming first in the threadmarks.

Also, I would like to give a huge shout-out and thank you to @Old Iron and @Sheo Darren for the help that they gave me in writing this chunk! It would not have turned out nearly as well as it did without them!

OVA 1: It's the Yogurt Battle!

++++++++++

(AN: This OVA occurs between Part 60 and Part 61)

"Come on, Tally, wake up!" Kay shouted, shaking my shoulder violently. I groaned and opened my eyes, jarred out of my brief nap. It took a moment for wakefulness to come to me, and I blearily looked around the interior of the command tent. Arisa, Naomi, Kay, and Hannah were all here, as was a new face, who I didn't quite recognize.

"What's the rush?" I asked tiredly. "Is it time for the match?"

Kay stepped back as I sat up, rubbing my eyes and letting out a quiet yawn. I hadn't been sleeping well since we left Australia. The hammering rain outside the tent wasn't helping matters in the slightest, and that darned storm had been following us since Saunders passed the Philippines. I hadn't the foggiest idea how, but I had this gut feeling that the storm was part of the problem.

"Not yet," came Kay's answer. "We've still got half an hour. But I've also been trying to wake you for the past five minutes."

"Oh," I oh'd softly. Another yawn escaped my mouth. "Who's the new face?"

Arisa facepalmed.

"Tally, this is my girlfriend, Maho," Naomi said, gesturing towards the brunette, who was wearing a Kuromorimine uniform.

"Hello," I smiled and waved. Maho just nodded.

"Maho stopped by to say hello and wish us luck," Kay explained. "Arisa has been trying to grill her on any hints she might have for the field, since it's their home field, but…"

Arisa winced. "But Maho is somehow scarier than Kay can be."

I echoed her wince. "Ouch."

"Everything you need to know is available on the field briefing, and if you've done your own reconnaissance," Maho stated firmly.

And hadn't that been a fun experience. Many of the buildings on the field were taller than the ones I was used to on sensha-do fields, and with the hammering rain, the whole thing had just felt too confining. This was one match that I wasn't looking forward to.

"Eh, don't mind Miss Every Advantage Possible," I joked, finally feeling some measure of liveliness. "She just wants to win harder."

"Hey!" Arisa protested, but my comment got a smile out of Maho.

"I noticed a Jumbo in your lineup," Maho commented, this time looking over at Kay. "I'm impressed. You're finally using something with actual armor."

Naturally, Kay just smiled brightly. "Well, you know how I am. Gotta break Axe out at least once a season. It keeps her happy!"

"Please don't tell me Jane got to you too…" I muttered, receiving a poke from Hannah for my trouble.

"Okay, I won't tell you!"

Hand, meet face.

"Well, it sucks that we won't be able to face each other this season," Naomi said, clearly rolling back to a previous topic.

"It is unfortunate, but a worthwhile effort," Maho agreed. "I look forward to seeing Miho find her own sensha-do."

"She's certainly creative enough," the sniper agreed.

"That's assuming she can beat Katyusha," Arisa interjected. "She lost to her last year, and Ooarai is nowhere as good as Kuro."

"Katyusha's strengths revolve around her ability to out-think her enemies and exploiting known weaknesses. That's why she managed to defeat us last year. That and taking advantage of Miho's love of her friends. She may know Miho, but I doubt that she has cared enough to watch Ooarai's matches live. She'll be surprised."

I blinked at Maho. Suddenly, things came together in my mind and I blinked, stunned.

How the heck was Naomi dating Maho Nishizumi?

Conversation circled around a bit. I mainly ended up chatting with Kay while I nibbled on a cheap burger to get some food in my body. With all the hammering rain, concessions were shut down, and Trips was once again nowhere to be seen while Saunders was docked at Nagasaki.

I did get into a brief discussion with Maho about the usefulness of light tanks versus heavy tanks. I had to defend Izumi's honor, even if I wasn't Jane levels of crazy. We ended up agreeing that the other had good points, but that our personal stances weren't going to change, which was frankly a lot better than the arguments I've been having with Louise.

And then we all had to go meet with Yogurt's leadership and mount up for the match. In the pouring rain, and in the middle of a faked bombed out city.

This was going to be fun.

++++++++++

"I can't see anything…" I grumbled under my breath. Izumi was moving slowly through the ruined city, so that April could take advantage of the stabilizer, and so that I might be able to hear hostile engines over our own twin V8s and the hammering rain.

Which unfortunately meant that I was completely exposed to the rain, with my head outside the hatch. My hair was soaked, and the rain was slowly trying to work its way through my poncho.

"At least you can see more than we can!" Jane replied, somehow still cheerful. Of course, it could just be her being her usual strange self, coupled with not needing to be rained on.

"Are you gonna try the driver's hood and the windshield wiper?" April asked curiously.

"Nah," came the flippant reply. "I'd rather not get hurt if we get shot at. It's still just periscopes for me."

"If only Tally would be that concerned for her safety…"

"I'll be fine!" I interjected. "I'm just out here while I'm trying to spot things. You know full well that I button up when we're being shot at!"

"Except when you don't."

"Are we really having this discussion in the middle of a match where I can't see or hear anything from inside the tank?"

"Yes, yes we are."

I sighed and looked down at the gunner for a moment. I was about to say something when the sounds of the city around me shifted. It was subtle, dampened by the city and the rain, but I could definitely hear an engine.

"Crescent, this is Zephyr," I spoke into my radio. "I've got at least one unknown engine near Milwaukee. Sounds pretty big."

"Copy that, Zephyr," Arisa replied. Her voice was staticky, but at least I could still understand her despite the interference. "Pullman Platoon, head over to Milwaukee. Keep an eye out."

"Underst-" Naomi, however, was cut off by a crackle of static. She was all but impossible to actually understand.

"Zephyr, keep scouting, but be careful. If you know they're nearby, go silent. Don't get yourself knocked out," Arisa continued.

"Will do," I replied. I switched off the radio and flipped on my intercom. "Driver, keep us moving towards Reading, nice and slowly."

"Gotcha!" Jane replied.

It felt strange to be going slowly in Izumi. Normally, unless we had a specific reason to be slow, Jane was flooring it, trying to get us to our location ASAP. But today, we were going much more sedately, a casual 25 kph.

And unless we needed to be anywhere in a hurry, we weren't going faster than that.

Very slowly, we made our way around the city. Some of the roads were cramped, or filled with rubble, or otherwise a pain to traverse. It made me wonder just how Kuromorimine used this field for practice or matches. They were all about formations and assaults, not independent action.

Or maybe that's why they had it as a field. They probably had a couple wider practice fields out on their school ship that let them practice the sweeping maneuvers they so loved, but this one let them practice something else, learn how to compensate for their weaknesses, or operate in less than ideal environments.

The crackle of static on my radio let me know someone was trying to reach out, but beyond the voice vaguely being Kay's, I couldn't make out a word of it. She must have been engaged. But that wasn't my problem. I'd keep an open ear, but until Arisa said something or Kay's voice cleared up, there was nothing I could do.

"Tally," Jane said, snapping me away from the radio. I looked up, and immediately realized what she wanted me for. I could hear something, but it was rather quiet. Where was… there!

"Gunner, I think there's an L3 around here, somewhere to our right. Driver, take us forward slowly, and call out if something appears in front of us," I ordered quietly. Izumi crept forward, and I strained my ears for any further sign of the rattling tracks.

For a moment, all was silent. There was some rubble ahead of us, but nothing that was threatening…

The chatter of 8mm machine guns immediately proved me wrong, and I dropped down into my hatch, barely avoiding some of the ricochets off Izumi's front. "Where the heck are they?"

"I have eyes on," April reported calmly. "They're camouflaged as the rubble."

"Clever girl… nail her."

"On the way."

The recoil of the 37mm M6 was something we were all comfortable with at this point, and I barely even noticed it as I shoved a new round into the breech. I was too focused on my periscope, where April had nailed the L3/33 maybe a hundred yards in front of us. The camouflage net had been partly thrown away by the impact of the 37, and the dark gray tankette had a white flag waving in the wind.

"Crescent, Zephyr. Got ambushed by an L3 camouflaged with a pile of rubble. Let the others know, okay?" I said into my radio, before unbuttoning and giving the tankette's crew a cheerful wave.

"Understood," came Arisa's curt response, before she relayed my information. "Heads up, Zephyr, Budd Platoon is down a tank, but they caught an H39."

That… wasn't a good trade, but at least Kay was intact. No way that an H39 was gonna take down Axe. The Jumbo was too well armored and had too good a crew for something like that. Judging by what Yogurt had brought against St. Glo last week, they probably had one other H39 and L3, plus their flag 38(t) and their heavier tanks.

"Driver, turn right here," I ordered gently, musing over the general situation. If Naomi was moving to Milwaukee to engage whatever those heavies were, probably the Panther or Panzer IV G if I had to guess, Kay had just gotten ambushed by an H39 over in Nickleplate, and Izumi had just gotten jumped en route to Reading, then…

I pulled out my map and looked it over. There was a potential encirclement in the works. Even with their heavies, Yogurt was still a fairly defensively oriented team, and I was slipping around their flank. Even if we discounted Wiz as not being part of the fighting since Arisa was parked atop a parking garage and acting as a radio tower, our numbers were even, and Shermans were better than a good chunk of Yogurt's remaining tanks, especially in this environment.

"Zephyr and Budd Platoon, updated reports," Arisa cut in. "Pullman knocked out the Hetzer, but lost another M4 in the process."

"Copy," was my simple reply as I mused over the situation. I almost wanted to be up with Arisa so I could share the plan with her and hash it out, but for now… "Crescent, have Budd Platoon split up, and have the more mobile group circle around to Rio Grande."

"That'll leave Kay on her own," Arisa replied warily.

"What?" This time, Kay's response came through loudly, and staticky, but understandable.

"Let me explain the plan first!" I shouted hastily. I didn't care if she could understand me or not, I had an idea to give to command and control. "Yogurt's forces are concentrated around Cotton Belt, up in the northern part of the city. The open sightlines favor their tanks a bit more. But at the same time, that leaves them open to being flanked. If we send a flanking force around through Rio Grande, and I circle around through Reading, that's an encirclement. With Pullman and Budd holding the front and keeping them busy, it'll be a clear shot for us to hammer the flanks."

Everything was quiet for a long minute as Arisa considered it. "It's a good plan. Pullman, are you engaged?"

Static, this time from Naomi.

"Have one of your tanks move to Budd's position in Nickleplate. Budd, have your two remaining Shermans split off and circle around to Rio Grande. We'll encircle Yogurt at Cotton Belt." Three groups of two, plus me. It was certainly better than leaving Kay on her own, but it definitely ran the risk of spreading our forces too thin. It would have to do. "Zephyr, keep doing what you're doing. It's your plan."

"Copy that!" "You got it!" and a wave of static all answered Arisa.

Here's hoping it works…

++++++++++

"Driver, halt," I called out quickly. Jane was somehow a half-beat ahead of me, and Izumi came to a sudden stop right before we would have emerged into the intersection ahead of us. As is, we were stuck in a very narrow alleyway, and I could hear something big and mean headed our way.

That was almost certainly the Panther. None of Yogurt's other tanks had engines that big.

But I had to be sure. If I wasn't, then we'd either stopped for nothing, or we were dead anyways. I carefully climbed out of the Stuart and gave the turret a gentle pat as I did. Jane was rubbing off on me, too. "Stay here. I'm gonna scout on foot."

"Are you crazy?" Jane asked.

"Pot calling the kettle black," I retorted before taking off my intercom mic. With that taken care of, I dropped down to the road, stumbling slightly on the slick cobblestones. At least the sensha-do boots were waterproof, else the numerous puddles would have been much more annoying to tromp through.

I didn't fully step out onto the road. That would have been a clear giveaway. Instead, I clambered through the rubble and into the building next to us. It wasn't in the best condition, and all the glass in the windows had long since disappeared, if it even existed in the first place. But it had windows, and I could look either way.

Rolling down the road towards me were three very heavy tanks. It was three of Yogurt's remaining tank killers, in the Panzer IV L/70, Panther D, and Panzer IV ausf. G. This was going to be an excellent ambush if it worked… They were coming from the opposite side of the alleyway from my building, and the Panther's turret was aimed out to cover the far flank. If we did this right, the knocked out Panther would block any attempt to chase or otherwise retaliate. If we didn't, well…

Trading a Stuart for a Panther was what I could call a pretty good trade.

I didn't have time to linger or radio this harebrained plan to anyone, though. I dashed out of the building and scrambled up Izumi's front to drop down into the turret. "April, there's a convoy of three tanks that's gonna roll past us in less than a minute. I want you to nail the Panther when you have eyes on."

The brunette nodded, and adjusted her hair to get her bangs out of her eyes. "I'll hit them hard."

I returned the nod, and stuck my head out of the hatch to better listen. The engines were getting louder. Pretty soon… The gun barrel of the L/70 appeared crossing the alleyway. The tank destroyer followed soon after. Nobody was unbuttoned, and nobody was looking our way. They didn't see or hear us. Then came the Panther…

The 37mm fired. April's first shot slammed into the medium tank's flank and failed to knock it out. A curse slipped out of my lips in Russian as I hastily shoved the next round into the gun. They were reacting, trying to accelerate away, but the convoy meant that it had to turn.

"Hit 'em again!" I shouted.

"On the way!"

The 37mm fired again, this time slamming into the Panther's engine. Smoke immediately began billowing out of the damaged tank, and it rolled forward a little further.

"Driver, full reverse!" The Panther wasn't going to block the alleyway! I heard the quiet 'thwip!' of a white flag popping out, but as the Stuart tried to pull away, the Panzer IV fired on us. I ducked down and closed the hatch over my head.

We didn't get knocked out. The Panzer IV had missed! We just needed to…

My frantic thoughts and planning were cut off by a loud rumble and the clatter of stone and brick falling. Then the bricks started hammering Izumi as well. I had to cover my ears to even slightly escape the cacophony.

The reverse acceleration came to a sudden stop, and I nearly slammed my head into the turret wall behind me.

The interior of the tank was dark, I couldn't hear anything, and we weren't moving.

Someone was screaming.

It took me a moment to realize that it was me.

Finally, the chaos stopped. We stopped getting rocked around by impacts, my hearing was slowly returning to me, and I could see a little bit thanks to the emergency lights. I looked around, and saw April similarly hunkered down, only just recovering from the crash. "Jane? You okay?"

No response.

"Jane?" When she didn't respond a second time, I wormed my way out of the turret and into the assistant driver's seat. Jane was unconscious, but I gave her a once over as best I could, and she looked okay. She'd just bumped her head. Hopefully.

"April, help me move her into the assistant driver's seat, then check the radio," I requested. My gunner was a little slow to react, and moving Jane around was awkward, but we successfully got her moved, and I took her place in the driver's seat. Going backwards didn't get us anywhere, and when I tried going forwards, Izumi jerked forward but couldn't make any further progress.

I swore in Russian again, and turned off the engine. If we were buried, then I didn't want to damage the engine, or potentially get us hurt via exhaust fumes.

"Radio seems functional," April reported.

"Gotcha," was my simple response as I now had to crawl through the tank to get back to my seat. The radio, at least the internal radio, was still functional. I just had to hope that the antenna hadn't been damaged.

I was a fool for hoping as such, but it was our only chance of getting out of here. I wasn't even going to try the hatches. Instead, I just set the radio to transmit on an open frequency.

"This is Saunders M5A1 light tank Izumi calling for assistance. Our tank has been buried and we need help extracting ourselves."

"Sorry about that, Izumi," someone I didn't recognize replied. "We didn't mean to bury you. But we can't get to you until the ARVs pull Aiko's Panther out of the way."

"Well, that was part of the plan…" I said sadly, shaking my head.

"Part of your bow is still exposed, so you aren't completely buried. Nowhere we can attach a tow hook to."

"Copy."

Well, that was a relief.

"We can't help you, so we'll continue on with the match. Good luck with getting yourselves unstuck!" the Yogurt girl said. That was the last I heard of her.

That, on the other hand, wasn't a relief. I swapped to a Saunders channel. "Does anyone read me?"

"I hear you, Zephyr," Naomi replied. "But your signal is terrible."

"That tends to happen when someone drops a building on you," I deadpanned. "Any chance you can help get me unstuck?"

"Repeat last? I heard you say that they dropped a building on you?"

"You heard correctly."

Naomi swore. "Pullman One and Two are en route."

"Thanks."

I slumped into my seat. At least they were close enough to help, assuming they didn't run into the Jagdpanzer and Panzer IV. I just had to hurry up and wait.

++++++++++

Someone knocked on Izumi's hull. I responded with a knock of my own, and then they pulled open the hatch above Jane. For the first time in ten minutes, we had light and fresh air flowing through the tank. Naomi reached down and helped Jane climb out. I followed my driver, and April was right behind me.

All four of us climbed down off the pile of rubble, and I turned to look at Izumi. Her armor was dented all over, and her front right corner was about the only part of the tank that wasn't completely buried. The 37mm was probably damaged, too, but by some miracle, the white flag hadn't popped.

I let out a low whistle. At least the rain had kept the dust down. "If we can get her out of there, it'll be a darned miracle."

"I hope we can," Jane said softly. "She was hurting pretty badly."

"We all were, really."

"Did anyone get hurt?" Naomi asked, turning her attention to my crew.

"I got knocked out in the initial burial, but it doesn't seem to have caused any actual damage," Jane replied.

"Just a nasty scare," was my reply.

"No injuries here," said April.

"Good. We'll have Ranger try to blast away some of the rubble, and then I'd have Pluck try to tow you out," Naomi suggested. From atop her loyal M4, Haruna nodded and gave us a thumbs up. "You may want to take cover behind one of the Shermans."

"You may be right," I nodded at Naomi, and my crew followed me over to Ranger. We all took cover behind the tank, and waited for Haruna's shout.

"Firing in three, two, one!" The blast of an M48 high explosive shell was deafening, but once all the debris settled down, there was less rubble resting atop Izumi, and her front was completely exposed.

It was enough that we could hitch her up to Pluck and let the M4A4 try to pull Izumi out. I supervised the tow from atop Pluck's engine deck, but Izumi was well and truly stuck. There was no way we could get her out without proper digging equipment. Pluck just jerked to a halt as soon as the tow cable went taut.

Naomi, Haru, and I reconvened as soon as we had Izumi unhooked. "I'm gonna call it here. That's enough time spent trying to dig me out instead of getting on with the match. Good luck with the rest of the match. The Panzer IV and Jagdpanzer were traveling with the Panther that we managed to nail."

"I know," Naomi replied with a nod. "We ran into them earlier and lost Pullman Three."

"Hopefully it doesn't take too long for the ARVs to get you free," Haruna said sympathetically.

"Hopefully," I agreed. I waved at my friends and jogged over to Izumi. I was only inside her long enough to hit the emergency shutdown and call for ARV extraction. As soon as that was done, the adrenaline of the match began slowly but surely filtering out of my body, replaced by a bone-deep weariness. A week's worth of poor sleep caught up with me all at once, and Jane caught me as I staggered to one side. She set me down against Izumi's dented bow, and I was out like a light before anyone could get a word in edgewise.

++++++++++

"Shit!" Kay swore as she got Naomi's report from Arisa. She wanted nothing more than to help Tally out and keep her in the match, but Tally had made the right call. They needed Pluck and Ranger in this fight if they wanted this plan to work.

This rain and the tight corridors of the city was making radio all sorts of unreliable, and Kay hated that. At least with Arisa acting as a relay, she could coordinate with Naomi and Chelsea's pairs, but it was a lot slower than she would have liked.

"Come on, Four," Kay said over her radio. "Pullman and Eagle are gonna start pushing soon. We should join them."

"Right!" came Nita's reply.

Axe rumbled to life and started pushing forward once again. Kay gently patted the Sherman Jumbo's turret ring and despite everything going poorly at the moment, she smiled. She was in a tank, one of her tanks, and she was doing sensha-do as it was meant to be played, with all the chaos that included. Tally would be okay.

Right now, Kay had a match to win.

"This is Eagle! We've been engaged by light tanks!" Chelsea called out. That was the other two light tanks on Yogurt's team. Which meant that she knew roughly where the Panzer IV and Jagdpanzer were, she knew roughly where the H39 and CV/33 were, and four tanks had already been knocked out including the Panther. That just left the StuG and Panzer 38(t).

Chelsea and Lou were more than capable of handling a couple light tanks, and while Kay trusted Naomi and Haruna to be able to take out the Panzer and the Jag, they were dangerous enough that help would probably be appreciated. And then it was time to hunt the flag tank.

"Pullman, this is Budd One, we're headed your way," Kay called over the radio.

"Copy-" Naomi replied, though she was garbled by static and interference.

"Driver, get us over to Reading, fast as you can!" Kay ordered.

"Don't you mean Reading?" Becca asked, turning away from her gun sights to face the blonde.

"Reading is the proper pronunciation. Half-American, remember?" Kay grinned at her gunner.

"Right, right…" Becca shrugged and went back to the gun.

Unlike Tally, Kay refused to let the rain ruin her sleep and her cheer. Sure, this storm had been pretty weird, but that meant nothing in the face of a sunny disposition. Axe seemed to agree, because her driver was pushing her hard to rush over to Naomi's location, and the M4A3E2 was more than keeping up with it.

She'd have to thank Holly and Brooke for keeping the Jumbo in good shape while she was busy with Spunky.

"Pullman has been engaged!" Naomi called urgently over the radio. "We're pinned in cover by the Jag and the Panzer!"

"Copy that, Pullman! Don't get yourselves knocked out!" Kay replied. "We're almost there!"

They were close enough that Kay could hear the gunfire echoing through the city streets. Especially the boom of the 17-pdr. Naomi was certainly giving as good as she got.

"One just got knocked out!" Pullman Two, Haruna, reported over the radio. "Panzer IV got her!"

"Understood! Keep fighting, and try to not get knocked out!" Kay ordered. The relatively inexperienced TC acknowledged, and went back to her fighting.

"Contact front!" Becca shouted suddenly. Kay looked up and immediately saw what the gunner was shouting about. The StuG III G was right there, with its gun pointed directly at Axe.

The first shot bounced off of the Jumbo's frontal armor.

"Hit 'em!" Kay ordered. They weren't even going to slow down for this.

The stabilized 75mm gun roared, and the shot went low, ricocheting off the ground.

"Loader, give me HVAP, and keep it coming!" Kay ordered. She ducked low and closed the hatch over herself, just in case. She could still clearly see the StuG through her vision blocks.

"Got it!"

The StuG got a second shot off. It slammed into the heavily armored turret front and failed to penetrate. They wouldn't get a third.

"HVAP up!"

"On the way!"

Becca's shot was right on the money, and the StuG rolled to a stop, the white flag waving merrily in the wind as Axe and Blue Jay rushed past. Kay gave them a cheerful wave, but they had a firefight to get to and no time to stop to smell the roses.

"Got the Panzer, but the Jag got us!" Haruna reported over the radio.

"Dammit! Can't we go any faster?" Kay asked her driver.

"I'm givin' her all she's got, Cap'n!"

Kay just nodded and turned off her intercom. She gently patted the edge of the hatch, and in a whisper, spoke. "Come on, Axe. Just that little bit faster. We need to get there ASAP."

Whether it had any effect or not, Kay couldn't tell. But when they rounded the next corner, the ass of a Panzer IV L/70 was right in front of them. It was a perfect shot.

"On the way!" Becca announced, and the HVAP round slammed straight into the tank destroyer's engine. The white flag went flying.

The mad dash of the Jumbo and her escort brought Kay past where Pluck had been knocked out, and Kay gave her lieutenant a big grin and an even bigger thumbs up. "Keep up the good work!"

"Eagle, do you read?" Kay called over her radio once she dipped back into her seat once again. Going up and down like that was good exercise!

"Loud and staticky, Budd!" Chelsea replied.

"Good enough! We're gonna catch their flag in a crossfire. She's gotta be somewhere near Chessie."

"Copy that. Eagle moving to engage!"

It wasn't much of a hunt, really. With Eagle closing in on one side, and Budd closing in on the other, the 38(t) didn't have anywhere to run. It got all of one shot off against the very angry Sherman Jumbo before Axe and Blue Jay hit it nearly simultaneously. And that was game!

Another victory for Saunders! Time to celebrate and invite absolutely everyone to said celebration of a well played match!
What's this? Darkhound coming out with actually new content for Hell on Tracks? In the middle of the rewrite?

Yes. Yes it is. If you all remember back a year and a half or so, when I originally wrote Part 61, I was completely stuck on this match, and ended up skipping it, jumping from the day before the match to the post-match review with the leadership. Well, here it finally is! As you may have been able to guess, this chapter is technically part of the rewritten continuity instead of the pre-rewrite continuity, but it fills the spot regardless of whether or not I named the various tanks or side characters. As always, I hope you lot enjoyed the chapter! I've been on a writing roll, and I can't wait to get to work on the next chunk of the rewrites!

Eventually, when I reach that part of the rewrite, this match will just become the new Part 61, and 61 through the current end of the story will all be pushed back. But for now, it's a fun little something!

Even more rewrites!
Hey all! Parts 27 through 31 have been rewritten! Go check them out!

Also, a quick status update on the plans for the rewrite. As is, most of the content after the Ooarai match is up to my standards, with a couple exceptions. I've been completely rewriting chapters so far, but once I finish up with that match, things should go a lot faster, because I'll just be editing things to fit the rewritten continuity. Stuff like certain friends having been changed or added, and the M5 Stuart being named Izumi. We'll see how long it takes for me to get to that point, but I have high hopes for making progress in the coming months!

School Uniform Tally!
Hey all! Apparently, the last couple chapters of rewrite have inspired a friend to make some art of Tally in her school uniform! These images are made by the ever amazing Sharky!

And here we have Tally and Sarah "English Breakfast" Alexander of St. Gloriana commiserating over foot-related injuries. Also made by Sharky.

Small Rewrite Announcement Time
Hey everyone! This chunk only took one month to write instead of three! Parts 41 and 42 have been rewritten, and with that, we are rapidly approaching the point where things don't need to be fully rewritten, just given edits to account for certain new or changed characters, and the names of the tanks. I'm really looking forward to reaching that point, because this rewrite has taken slightly longer than I would have liked, even if the result is worth it imo.

You have been killing it with the rewrites, many fics I have read kinda died out when they had to be rewritten.

Rewrite Announcement 43-46
Hey all! It... may have taken me three months to get this batch of rewrites done, but this was a big one for me. The original version of Parts 43-46 were some of my least favorite parts of Hell on Tracks, and they fought me on the rewrite. But through some Christmas miracle, I got them done. I'm quite pleased with the results, all things considered, and I hope you lot similarly enjoy them.

I have been reading through hell on track in my spare time over the last month, and I can absolutely say I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it so much since I work on Sherman, Stuarts, and Tank destroyers it set my tism off. I have not enjoyed a gup series like this since I read Ribbon Warrior. So much so that I took notes! I usually only do that when reading memoirs or stories from the war. little technical tidbits here and there really make me happy. I can't wait to see more when the next chapter and rewrites come out.

Rewrite Announcement Parts 48-51
Hey everyone! This one has been a long time coming. Parts 48 through 51, the Saunders-Ooarai match. This was one of the primary reasons why I wanted to do this rewrite in the first place. In the original, I feel like I screwed this arc up massively. I couldn't find a satisfactory resolution to the cellphone subplot, I handled the events of the match itself poorly, and the final resolution to the whole Bandits main story arc had very little buildup, on either side. I got feedback from friends that this was where they stopped reading. I was sharing Hell on Tracks with some new friends, and found myself cringing at how this section had ended up playing out. These past two months, I have been incredibly stressed out about this bit of the rewrite, and as my various editors can probably affirm, I was hounding them to give me feedback and make sure that I got this relatively perfect. I didn't believe them when they told me things were good, because I couldn't believe that I somehow managed to get it right on my first try for the rewrite.

I think I've got it done right this time. I've looked at a lot of the feedback I've gotten and I hope I've addressed all of the various concerns, though admittedly two of the Discord servers I used no longer exist for various reasons. If anyone has any sort of feedback on the story, the rewrite, and especially this part of the rewrite, I would love to hear about it.

Thank you all for sticking with me through this process. From here, I've generally been satisfied with how things go for the rest of the story. I'm still going to go through and rewrite things, but that will mostly just be to update characterizations, throw in a few new scenes here and there with characters who weren't really around in the original, and make sure that all of the tanks and teammates have names.

Rewrite Update 52 and 53
Hey everyone, I'm happy to announce that Parts 52 and 53 have been rewritten. This batch of two took me a while, and I've been struggling to find inspiration to write recently. But I'm not gonna let a little writer's block get in the way of me finishing this rewrite and then finishing the story. I don't care if it takes me another 3-4 years to get to that point, I am going to finish Hell on Tracks. And I hope that everyone who has stuck around this long will be there to see this through with me.

Rewrite Update 54 and 44 New
Hey all! Sorry for the delay in updating this! Writer's block is a bitch, but 54 and 55 have been rewritten! I've also started on a new project, Ironsides, which is a very different beast compared to HoT:R. It follows the perspective of one of the tank spirits that Jane can supposedly see, and while it references this story, it is set in a different universe. As such, don't necessarily expect stuff from Ironsides to apply to HoT.
