[] Investigate the weight

The whole problem here is the weight, so you decide to cut to the heart of things.

You take a deep breath, and you begin swimming down into the murky water, following the chain.

Very quickly it becomes too dark to see, but the chain quickly leads to your nearly fatal burden.

Feeling with your hands, it is a surprisingly small metal ball for it's weight, and braced against the silt you can shift it, much more easily than trying to swim with it.

You find where the chain attaches, a small loop of metal, and to your surprise find a gap.

It seems that it was there to slip the chain on, and relied on the buoyancy of whatever it was anchoring to keep the chain somewhat taunt.

Working as deftly as you can in the dark with your numb fingers, you start working the end of the chain through the gap, but it become stuck in short order. You work at it for a few moments when the burn in your lungs demands you resurface.

You swim upwards and resurface, your gasps drowned out by the continues sound of the waterfall.

A momentary tug on your chained leg, and then you realize that you have begun to drift downstream.

The chain must have popped free of the weight, you realize, as you begin to swim towards that beach you spotted earlier.

Your finally find your footing, and wade out of the water, the chill of the late evening air stealing away any warmth you might have had left.

After only a few steps onto the beach, chain still trailing behind you into the water, you find yourself falling to the ground in a shivering mess.

"Well, don't you look like a right mess," a smooth tenor breaks though the roar of the waterfall, startling you.

You look up, to see the vague figure of a man.

What do you say?

[] Who are you?

Filled with equal parts curiosity and suspicion, you eye this stranger warily.

"Who are you?" you croak, as if you haven't used your voice in a long time.

The figure pulls something from his coat, and for a long moment you think he hasn't heard you.

"Hmmmm," he finally responds as he strikes a match, before raising it to the cigar clenched between his teeth.

The small amount of light is enough for you to see him, albeit without much detail. His age is hard to place, as his voice sounded young, but he looks worn. He has dark, wavy hair, and friendly muttonchops with a bit of stubble on his chin.

He is wearing a tattered, navy blue greatcoat, resembling the type soldiers wear, but without rank or ornamentation. You note that he lacks a cap, but otherwise he doesn't stand out too much.

How you know what a soldier's greatcoat looks like, or that it's odd that he is bareheaded you don't know.

"I'm not all that important," he replies, idly tossing the match away, "Just an old soldier. You should worry more about yourself. You do know that you're freezing to death, dotcha?" he says with a chuckle, like he finds something amusing in your suffering.

He jabs his cigar towards the trees that sit some distance away from the beach.

"You should head thataways. Once you get outta this park, you should be able to find someone who can help you." he says, before he glances at the chain around your leg. "You might want to ditch the chain though. It'll cause talk...but if you freeze to death, you'll wish people be talkin' instead," he says with a shrug, before taking several puffs on his cigar.

You stare at him, unsure if you should say something in response, but he ignores you, instead going through his greatcoat's pockets.

"Here, you might want to take a look at yourself too. Some consider lookin' proper more important than life itself. You don't seem the type, but it might do you some good, I reckon." He says, offering you a mirror.

[X] Take the mirror

He's offering now and presumably will want his mirror back, so it's the only one which can't be done later.
