Chapter 6;
No Guts, Just Gory

Vahlen entered the lab with a few of her people who specialised more in biological sciences. There were a selection of corpses, from Germany, the UFO in the Phillipines, and a number more from Darwin, including the remains of the cybernetic discs the aliens had used. It was a wealth of opportunity and the first and most critical element so far was that, except for the damage done to them they were almost all functionally identical to one another. In the end, she simply selected the freshest looking corpse and had it brought up into the environementally sealed autopsy chamber.

"It is March 21st 2015 at... 1101. We have one specimen colloquially called 'Sectoid' by the men on the ground. Initial tests and scans indicate that there are components of non-biological matter embedded within their internal structure. In a supine position the Sectoids are marginally smaller than human average in height and considerably reduced in mass, between 120 to 152 centimetres, and 36 to 50 kilograms. At first appearance they appear to be emaciated with elongated limbs, the feet and hands both sport four digits, withe the hands having three extremely long digits and opposing thumb, feet and hands both show evidence of some webbing. Colouring is a predominantly mottled gray though there is an internal bioluminescent organ within the chest." The Doctor wheeled over the autopsy tools and studied them before taking the long handled scalpel and beginning the traditional Y incisions to grant her access, the other scientists at the table diligently peeling back the flesh and operating the bone cutters to open up the chest cavity.

"This is... perturbing. There is a significant variation in the organs from the human template, the digestive organs are vestigial and non-functional and there appear to be no reproductive organs whatsoever. There are a fair number of cybernetic modifications present within the cavity that may take over some of the other functions. Delittle, have you examined the initial gene typing?"

"I have Doctor Vahlen, of the sixteen samples taken there is little ot no genetic variance." One of the other scientists answered.

Vahlen nodded, "Thank you Doctor," she moved up to peeling the eyelids off, "The eye structure is much more highly evolved to our own. These aliens most certainly have superior vision to us, which may account for their increased accuracy, before further testing I would go so far as to suggest that if we engage them at night they will almost certainly see our forces before they see the enemy. They possess a nictitating membrane that would allow them to filter excess light that might blind the sectoids. The size and dimensions of the skull," she reached for another tool, "indicates that they likely have a significantly larger brain. Which may be a source of the alleged psionics demonstrated in Darwin."

It took some minutes to open the head without damaging the contents, confirming their suspicions. "It is probable these creatures were genetically manipulated from some other baseline and the cybernetics are used to augment atrophied bodily functions and maintain control over them. The uniformity in the genetic testing suggest that these beings are cloned, and likely not a significant part of the enemy leadership structure, further testing, including live captures, may be necessary to learn more. Until then I am going to ship a number of these corpses to the facilities in America and Japan to commence studying the aliens biology for the potential applications of biological or chemical weapons that may effect them, whilst not effecting our own troops on the ground."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Raymond Shen stood in another similar chamber, safe from contaminations, and keeping the rest of the facility safe from contamination, he had been brought in specifically to help with studying debris from the cybernetic discs the enemy was utilising. Several other scientists and engineers were in the room with him, various elements indicated there were some biomechanical components.

"This is very interesting, the biological matter isn't carbon based? Silicon based perhaps?" One of the scientists said as they took samples, there were very few viable samples, the tendency of the discs to explode like small bombs preventing any major sized samples from surviving.

Shen was examining the cannon itself however. "Strange, the weapon isn't consistent with that used by the sectoids, they use some form of plasma weapons these appear to be magnetic accelerators."

A technician studied another piece from the wreckage, "Pity the power source didn't survive, maybe the mechanisms for its guns are what powers its anti-gravity technology?"

Shen nodded, "Speaking with Vahlen, as frustrating as it can be at times, she theorises the material powering the aliens craft provides antigravity lift and propulsion, if so maybe it aided in the weapons function." But he put down the pieces on a separate tray, "It is possible we might still be able to work out some key developments ourselves, but it might be best to let Dr Vahlen's teams take a look first."

"Doctor Shen, is it wise to get Mrs Frankenstein to look at these first?" The remark made Raymon spin and snap at the man.

"It is Doctor Vahlen, not Mrs Frankenstein. And if it WAS Frankenstein and she wasn't a Doctor it would be MS Frankenstein. So show some respect."

Good chapter.

Wonder how different this scene would have been if Shen and Vahlen were married.

Chapter 7; Battle for Britain
Chapter 7;
Battle for Britain

"Sixteen contacts they entered atmosphere over Greenland and are making a beeline for London." The words poured from the mouth of the woman keeping the Geoscape up to date with a cold, clipped professionalism that was difficult to create, but when someone had the talent, you wanted nobody better to bring you bad news in bite sized pieces.

"Sixteen craft? What the fuck." Bradford said in surprise.

I stood there and studied the Geoscape for moment, mentally calculating the time they would take to reach and what we could respond with. "What scale do we have?"

"Thirteen craft of the same configuration we originally shot down over the Phillipines, three of the same configuration we encountered in Darwin." She answered with all the information she had to call on.

I moved up to the Geoscape and studied the screens below it's holographic interface more closely. The enemy craft were operating in formation, and....

And the fact was, at best I could get four Interceptors in play to shoot them down with.. I picked up the black receiver and typed in what I was after. The phone rang for exactly four seconds before being picked up. "First Sea Lord Admiral George Zambellas, this is Commander Richard Irwin, XCOM." Bradford turned to study my expression and I saw him draw in a breath. "It is an honour to speak with you too sir, but it is my distinct displeasure to inform you that I have a tasking request under XCOM authority."

The room was almost silent as they waited on me, I hadn't launched Interceptors. "Unfortunately, we have detected sixteen vessels belonging to the X-ray threat headed directly for London after breaching atmosphere over Greenland. At best, we are able to muster four Interceptors with Avalanche Missiles to engage. They will fail if they attempt it." The tension in the room grew.

"What is your... tasking order." The words were uttered with a degree of fear.

I sighed, and hesitated for a moment before concentrating. "Tasking Order X-Ray Ultima. I want one Trident II missile at maximum yield for all warheads tasked for airburst detonation at 57.770651, -21.202406 in seven minutes."

There was a long long wait as I listened. "Yes. Tasking request will be filed with all relevant nations to prevent undesirable reactions to launch. Thank you First Sea Lord." I listened, "Any X-rays that escape the event will be intercepted by our Interceptors, and our ground teams WILL respond to any X-ray presence should it reach the surface. Yes Admiral, I am sorry I had to make the request. May god have mercy on our souls."

I hung up the phone. "I didn't know you were religious?" Bradford said surprised.

"I'm not, but if it makes the Admiral feel better, more power to him."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The HMS Vanguard received the orders from the highest authority, with the newest, and highest security clearance. The words on it reaching into their soul. Vigilo Confido. With a deep feeling of terror and that something was horribly wrong they proceeded to follow the instructions given, broadcasting a coded transmission in the clear as they surfaced to fire. The programming they had been sent was unusual, the trajectory of the missile not designed to take it on a typical course. In fact the target was, in such terms, relatively close. A patch of ocean with no islands anywhere nearby.

"Fire." Three of the men in the CIC of the Vanguard crossed their chests in prayer as the button was pressed and they wondered silently if they had just made the first move to start a nuclear war. They couldn't know that they hadn't fired the first nuclear war shot in a war they weren't even authorised to know was being fought.

They couldn't know that as their nuclear missile raced across the intervening distance to its rendevous with destiny just under seven minutes away, that they would be meeting thirteen small UFO's performing escort duty for three Terror ships aimed at London's heart, they could not and did not know that one of them was due to touch down in Downing Street, with the other two major craft landing in nearby streets.

And they didn't need to know. They only knew that they were counting down the minutes until they unleashed mankinds home-made artificial sunlight against a patch of the great blue territory owned by Poseidon that had apparently pissed off the Queen enough to decide to nuke it. They certainly didn't know that hot on the missiles trail were four Interceptors bearing the markings of XCOM with Avalanche missiles hot in their launchers.

Two kilometres from the initiation point the wing of alien craft realised the incoming object. It was far far too late for that to matter however as the missile spat out its submunitions. Fourteen Mk-4a RV/W-76-1 warheads were spat from the missile, initiating moments later. Each warhead had a yield of ninety kilotons.

"Congratulations people. Well done. Emperor Caligula would be proud of the statement we made today. I'm sure the fish and whales are very frightened of British might." The XO said to try and ease the tension in the chamber, there was some rough laughter, but turning his gaze on the Captain his own tensions were not eased. The Captain knew more than he did...

What was Vigilo Confido?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Only two contacts remaining, unknown if others are splashdowns or just annihilated in the blasts." The report came in. "One contact is breaking for space. Signature is erratic and may be damaged. Second contact heading for Aughernagalliagh, Aghernagallagh, Co. Mayo, Ireland. Satellites confirm it is trailing smoke, it may not make the mainland." There were cheers at that.

"Dispatch the Skyrangers from Greece and the Arctic, after what happened in Darwin I want two teams on this objective." I held my breath for a moment. "Why such a massive assault, why London... and why now?"

There is little hope of covering up that nuclular detnation, but they could cover it up by saying it was a misfire (given it target) or it was a nuclear weapon test

Chapter 8; Paddy's Paddlin
Chapter 8;
Paddy's Paddlin

The UFO screamed in low, erupting with smoke and debris as it arrowed in on the shores of Ireland, unable to maneuver it could not even bring its weapons to bear on the craft screaming after it. Nor could it react to the one coming from the opposing direction, the damage to it continuing to get worse as it struggled to remain airborne. And then it collided with the Eagle Island Lighthouse, what little control was lost, what little altitude it had was shedded.

It slammed into Eagle Island and slid for several dozen metres before coming to rest. Less than forty seconds later two Skyrangers slammed into the Island on opposite sides, the ramps slamming down and allowing XCOM troops to emerge into the open. And it was here that the aliens would learn the cost of challenging XCOM, for both craft were equipped with something new. From the Skyranger coming from the Arctic Circle a tank emerged, small and remotely operated its cannon turned in an almost ball turret. From the Greek Skyranger a pair of new S.H.I.V's emerged their M134 Miniguns tracking towards the UFO as they screamed forwards. But the aliens were not the only one in for a shock.

Chaya knelt down next to a low wall and lowered her rifle over the lip of it facing the alien craft. It was horrifically damaged and she found herself surprised that it had been able to land at all, nearly a quarter of it was little more than ruin, melted and shattered. But it was from there that the shock emerged. A dozen or more humanoids, tall very very human enemies wearing what looked like knock off of FBI suits and bearing aviator glasses. And they opened fire first. Wickedly accurate plasma fire as they dived into cover with strange unnaturally sinuous motion. But the HWP and SHIVs were able to take a few hits and they did not hesitate any longer.

The cannon on the HWP fired and the eighty millimetre cannon shell punched through some of the damaged metal of the UFO and the thin alien behind it, causing it to not only die, but erupt into a green bloody mist. The two SHIVs opening fire filled the air with noise and metal and moments later Chaya found a target and sent a round down range. The aliens head erupted and it burst into a green cloud.

"This is Chaya, xrays erupt into a nasty looking green cloud when killed. Recommend we don't huff that shit." She said sighting in on another alien. And then one she had not been able to aim for rose from cover, its jaw clicked open unnaturally wide and a gobbet of the shit flew her way, missing her and striking Grayson one of the SAS boys. He started coughing and vomiting as he quickly dived out of cover. "Recommend Grayson is quarantined."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bradford frowned at the screen as he stood next to me, the displays changing from one unit to another. "What the hell are those things?" He asked. Something had emerged from the wreckage behind the thin aliens, they were moving quickly, dark flesh and bioluminscence as they skittered forwards on four legs.

"I don't know. But I don't like it." I clicked my own microphone. "This is the Commander, concentrate SHIV and HWP fire on the bugs."

The tempo of battle changed as three, then four and five of the bugs emerged and began to gallop down towards the team from Greece. One of the aliens was cut down by the scything fire from the miniguns, then a second and third. And the things were in the lines.

One of the new men, a replacement for the losses in Dresden fell back from a wall firing as the creature caught him and with talons ripped him up into the air. And then it did something, something that the cameras being work couldn't catch despite the fact Chaya was firing as quickly as she could into the body of the creature. It collapsed, and so did... I checked the name, Michael Cohen.

The last of the creatures sliced open Chaya, the wounding grievous, but then another woman was there, Ute Heinemann, and she unloaded with her Shotgun in the aliens face, the FRAG-12 rounds of her automatic shotgun hammering it back as Chaya screamed in pain. The alien collapsed, ruined as...

"What in the fuck.." Bradford said. "Ute. What's happening with Michael?"

Ute spun and I saw him coming back into the screens view, a bolt of plasma hissed past and blinded us for a moment before we saw Michael... he was oozing with something, his skin pallid, warped and green and moving wrong, like he no longer fit his shape. "This is Command. Kill it... kill it now." Ute's voice came back, heavily accented.

"He is..."

"He is suborned. Kill it." I ordered and I saw her turn her weapon on the man and fire on full auto. The destruction was enormous, a human body was not designed to do what those shells were doing where they penetrated past gaps in the protection. And when his corpse finally hit the ground, it was clear to all that what they could see was not human any longer. The skin had split revealing bone white new flesh beneath. Not human flesh.

Ute's voice broke over the entire command network.

"Kill them all."

But the HWP and SHIVs
It's probably a good idea to explain what the acronyms mean when they are first used, I remember the SHIV (Super Heavy Infantry Vehicle) from the game and guessed the HWP (heavy weapons platform?) from context clues.

Thanks for the chapter!

Chapter 9; A Strange Outlook
Chapter 9;
A Strange Outlook

The screen was dark, light reflected from behind obscuring the speakers face. "It has been an unusual month Commander, several UFO interdictions, as well as several high profile assaults. Would you care to produce your results for the council." This was, unfortunately, the monthly briefing and justification for our continued existence and funding.

Bradford stood with me. "As you are aware, we have dispatched our budget expenses this month, and while they are above initial projections, they are below worst case projections. In addition to the terror missions in Dresden and Darwin we believe we intercepted one headed for the heart of London itself. Following that there have been several other UFOs intercepted on more lonely duties that were successfully prosecuted by XCOM." A note was passed to the Speaker.

"Yes, we feel you have done well, but XCOM casualties are astronomically high even on lighter interceptions, between thirty and fifty percent per mission. XCOM has been furnished with a pool of the most talented soldiers in the world and has already begun tapping into those who did not make the official cut, is there an explanation for this?" The Speaker pressed.

"There is." I answered plainly, "The aliens have more advanced technology than we do, better weapons than we do, better craft than we do, they have been genetically and cybernetically engineered for improved combat performance. The fact our men and women are performing to the level they are is already a demonstration of their skill." I picked up an iPad with several of my reports and flicked through to the Darwin Report. "In Darwin, where we managed to deploy in good order, it was the ADF forces that took the brunt of the violence, with one hundred and thirty two men and women lost, not counting the eighty three crewmembers from the Sydney which were lost when the Terror ships sunk it with their main weapons."

"And what is being done to address the disparity between our forces?"

"Dr Vahlen has recently had a breakthrough in man portable laser weapons and they are set to enter production within the week, in addition our facility in Japan has made its own developments in the aliens production material, the so-called 'alien alloys' that our boys have taken to dubbing Cydonium. With those alloys, if we can replicate it, we can begin development of personal armour made from the material which should greatly enhance survivability against the alien weapons. Both the development of laser technology and alien alloys would allow us to better arm and protect our craft, and once we begin working on the aliens power generation and flight systems we might even turn those technologies against them."

The Speaker nodded. "Very good Commander. I am pleased to hear of your developments. What of the aliens themselves?"

"The gray bastards dubbed Sectoids appear to be cloned and mass produced troops, at this stage it is my professional opinion that they are of little direct significance themselves as anything more than disposable fodder, that is likely why they are supported by the Cyberdiscs for greater combat capacity in any given engagement. Of much greater concern to me is the so-called Thin-Men. They are dangerously humanoid, and only close examination would reveal them for what they are. I suspect they are intended to infiltrate and influence us."

There was a long pause, a dangerously long pause. "We have seen an increase in the distance between us and several nations that were... problematic. North Korea, Iran and Venezuela have all increased their level of hostility towards the Council of Nations, and more problematically... have stepped up their threats. We have reason to believe these nations, among others, may prove to be problems in the near future."

That made my soul run cold.

"If I may ask. What does the council of nations expect from us in regards to these rogue states?" I simply stared at the monitor, there was animation behind the speaker, but I could hear nothing, indicating that they had deliberately silenced the pickups. It went on long enough I thought they might actually cut the feed altogether. But suddenly the sound returned. The Speaker.

"At this stage, it is our agreement that such nations will be observed and monitored by traditional intelligence agencies, and that you should offer no immediate protection to these states, but monitor for potential unusual traffic." The words were unsurprising, but short-sighted. Failing to protect even them might pose a more significant issue in future.

Bradford was shocked enough to actually voice the same concern. "Speaker, if I may sir... won't failing to help them prove more problematic in future?"

"Central Officer Bradford, you aren't alone in your opinion. But it is the councils opinion that with the attrition rates currently being suffered by XCOM we cannot afford to expend the lives of our best and brightest in aid of those who have rejected the compact of civilised nations in favour of tinpot dictatorships and power worship." The answer was almost certainly delivered from whoever represented the United States.

I held up a hand as Bradford looked like he was going to speak again. "Then there is one simpler question sir. If I discover evidence of xray involvement in those nations?"

This time there was no consultation.

"Commander. XCOM's Charter is the prosecution of the alien threat. In whatever form it takes."

The chrysalids have eggs? Maybe that the commander could always just put into livestock in a containment chamber to see if they work. If it works the commander gets an expendable number of chrysalids to test all kinds of weapons on since if they enter a populated area they're numbers will quickly rise if left unchecked.

It's notable that Chryssalids are considered uncontainable and can't be studied live. Which makes sense. They could shuck the crew out of a tank like it was an oyster.

Question is there a max tonnage limit known for the Skyranger? Wondering if it would be possible to deploy current gen 90mm/100mm/105mm light tanks/Self-propelled AA/Self-propelled Artillery. Guess it depends on how many Skyrangers they can build and deploy. HWP is mobile 50 cal. while SHIV is 40mm or 60mm autocannon?

HWP are self propelled tanks. Like actual tanks, they're not mobile .50's.

Chapter 10;
Its a Rave

"Uhm.. why is it red?" The proud engineer's face fell at the first word uttered by a Navy Seal 'David Ironside'. Only the fact he was a Seal prevented the engineer taking so much offence that he would punch the man in the face. The Seal didn't even seem to notice that he had given offence at all.

The problem was, he didn't have an answer for the leader of the US based XCOM team. It was red because... his counterpart, Liza, was quicker on the take than he was. A Texan woman she was fascinated with guns to an unhealthy degree and people argued that she had probably flicked the bean at least once over their new laser weapons. An ammosexual to the core. He wasn't sure he agreed with those folks however, she was an ammosexual true, but most ammosexuals seemed to have a hard-on for things that used combustion, surely a laser was too left-leaning 'Librul' for her with its battery tech. "Captain Ironside, the MX-01 Laser Rifle is a laser weapon capable of single, burst or fully automatic pulse laser fire, it's accuracy is dependent entirely on the operator but is one hundred percent accurate in restricted conditions. It is capable of burning through light structures, and hits significantly harder than the standard 5.56mm munitions you have been using, with an internal battery rated for a minimum of three hundred shots before requiring recharging. The only flaws with the design are that it is unusually heavy at eight kilograms... and the heat-resistant polymers we developed to produce the damned things comes in a caustically bright red. Don't like its colour, I'm sure our Science team could recommend some paints, I hear Berkley and Michaels collect Warhammer 40'000 and are probably familiar with one that would stick."

The Xcommie squad looked at each other before one piped up, "Yeah I don't think GW's paints are gonna stick to this, we might need something more industrial strength..." He mentally sighed... why was he surprised that the gung-ho warriors who killed aliens for a living were involved in that wargame. The group of soldiers picked up their allocated weapons and marched out sullenly.

"Thanks Liza." He said as he pinched his nose.

She punched him on the shoulder in a friendly manner. "Don't thank me Lemar, I'm not sure either of us are going to survive the Karens and Kens when they see the bright titanium blue personal armour the eggs are cooking up." She chuckled, "As it is, apparently we're going to be making the batteries for a while, with or without the gun."

"What? Why?" He said surprised, and annoyed he hadn't gotten the memo.

She chuckled, "Because, thanks to the eggheads figuring out these lasers, we kind of accidentally made a better battery than anything on the market, and the Commander, and bean counters, have zeroed in on it as a revenue stream."

"Selling to Tesla?" He asked.

This time she sighed. "Unfortunately no, I wouldn't have minded blowing a couple months salary on a new one, as it is I'm going to just quietly gut mine and replace the battery pack with some of these. No, they're marketing them to other automotive manufacturers, apparently the boss met with Musk and thought he was a complete dickhead."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Sir... I love and hate these weapons." The words echoed across the firing range, recoilless, with no bullet drop, and they were significantly quieter than normal weaponry.

And the ex-Delta operator's opinion was shared entirely by the rest of the occupants of the firing range. As the first prototypes, there had been little if any consideration for the comfort of the weapons operators, the design was heavy which was unavoidable, but spared the need to carry more ammunition, it was boxy as a motherfucker, it's ergonomics was fucking awful... and the material they were made out of felt like they were shooting a nerf gun, with even less recoil. And that was purely vaporised coolant being ejected from the weapon.

But they were pinpoint accurate, once they got over the idea of compensating for gravity... or wind... or most other atmospherics... they could hit the target every single time. And they could fire for a long time. And then... then some asshole turned on an ipod hooked up to speakers. A whole lot of targets were erected with Xrays printed on it.

And the techno music began to blaze. Unable to resist the fun...

They all began to fire on full auto.

Ergonomics could probably be improved without significant effort if at the cost of a few 100 grams of weight in light weight plastics.
there are already existing paints for guns as far as im aware.
an idea on something that could be improved with better lasers is LIDAR systems.
also another place to sell the batteries is the Solar System manufacturers it's potentially big money just in Australia before even accounting for the rest of the world.
